YORKSHIRE BY RAIL Yorkshire’s cities and market towns are easy to get to from other parts of the country. Travel to Yorkshire with highspeed trains from either London North Eastern Railway and Grand Central services. You can also get to Yorkshire by train from the North West with First TransPennine Express, who offer direct services into the county from Liverpool and Manchester. Northern Rail also offer direct services to Yorkshire from the North West. 16 FARMER COPLEY’S, NEAR PONTEFRACT Farmer Copley’s near Pontefract, is one of the top
spots for pumpkin picking as it’s home to the UK’s largest patch! Each year, the famous farm shop hosts a Pumpkin Festival, a fantastic event which gives visitors the chance to pick and carve their own fruit, sample spooky Halloween-themed food and even take a barrel ride.
YORKSHIRE BY ROAD Britain’s biggest and fastest highways cross Yorkshire from north to south and east to west, making getting to Yorkshire by car or by coach very simple. Thanks to our magnificent county’s rich and varied heritage, there are plenty of treats in store for visitors of all ages to enjoy this Halloween. This trail has been created to point brave souls in the direction of Yorkshire’s best places to visit, including some of English Heritage’s most ‘spooktacular’ ancient castles and monasteries. Showcasing the multitude of mysterious events taking place throughout Yorkshire, this trail is sure to inspire visitors to discover sites they hadn’t ever dared to venture before.
Halloween is a popular time for friends and family to spend time together. In common with other attractions, English Heritage properties have busy programmes of spooky trails, tours and film shows to enjoy. The magnificent ruins of Whitby Abbey, an inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula, are a special place to visit at Halloween and are a fitting place for our annual celebration of bright lights and dark tales; Illuminated Abbey. In the shadows of the Priory ruins by the banks of the River Wharfe, Bolton Abbey’s annual bonfire and firework display returns alongside fire eaters and traditional fairground rides.
In Leeds they celebrate bonfire night on a grand scale, with huge bonfires and awe-inspiring firework displays in parks across the city including Roundhay Park, East End Park, Woodhouse Moor, Springhead Park, Middleton Park and Bramley Park.

Pirates V Zombies! Join the fun at Castle Howard this October half term for a Halloween experience like no other. The House and Grounds have been taken over by a gang of ghostly pirates and ghoulish zombies and they’re on the lookout for new recruits! Hidden deep within Castle Howard’s burnt out wing lies the ancient cure to zombification. Whilst somewhere amongst the twisting woodland paths is a hoard of lost Pirate treasure waiting to be unearthed. And there’s about
to be an epic clash between the two camps of the living dead. But which team will you join? #TeamPirate or #TeamZombie? Families of all ages can enjoy a day of indoor and outdoor trails, solving clues along the way, taking part in craft activities and joining fun workshops to learn the ways of the zombies and the pirates, before a daily battle commences. Why not dress the part (think Captain Jack Sparrow, Swashbuckle right through to Dawn of the Dead).
Find some fangtastic family fun this October half term. As you wander through the haunting ruins and enjoy the dramatic views from the headland it’s easy to imagine how Bram Stoker got his inspiration for Dracula. The famous Victorian novel has made the seaside town the Goth Capital of Britain and there is always a special spooky feel to Whitby and the Abbey around Halloween.

The little ones will be entertained, and maybe a little scared, with bone-chilling tales from the creepy story teller and make sure to follow their spooky trail around the site. During Halloween week at The Forbidden Corner, there are lots of spooky goings on throughout the gardens, with witches, giant spiders, ghosts and ghouls. Look out for the haunted pumpkin garden and if you dare, brave the Mausoleum lost for centuries and only recently unearthed. There are prizes for finding the lost bones in the gardens and a Halloween quiz too. On the 31 October there is the very popular fancy-dress competition, with some great prizes on offer.
Visit Frightwater Valley for their annual Halloween spooktacular from 27 to 31 October as all manner of ghastly ghosts and gruesome ghouls lurk within the shadows of the theme park. During the day friendly frights are suitable for the whole family but BE WARNED as dusk falls you will need to tread very carefully as… the darker the night the scarier the fright! In the park there is plenty of thrill seeking fun to be had including Eagles Claw, The Ultimate (Europe’s longest roller coaster)
the underground world of Raptor Attack, Apollo and aboard the Black Pearl. While there are plenty of rides for junior thrill seekers too, including Splash Falls, the Wild River Rapids, Skull Rock, the Flying Cutlass and Jumpin’ Jacks! bouncy pillow. Younger guests will love the outdoor and indoor play, Adventure Playground, Mini Sand Diggers, Lightwater Express train ride, Eagles Creek Farm tractor ride, plus a selection of young fun fairground rides too.
