Winter Celebration Just Around The Corner

ear Neighbors, As the weather starts to cool and the leaves turn in for the season, we turn our attention to the holidays that bring our community together. Hopefully no one had any issues with setting their clocks back, which we all know is the real marking of the holiday season! With that in mind, I am excited to announce that the Holiday Toy Drive officially kicked off on November 1st! The season of giving is upon us and we have a fantastic line of local schools and business working with Welcome Home Newspaper and Living Through Giving. By collecting toys for the kids in need within San Anotnio, local schools will be competing all this month for a trophy and the chance to win $500.00, courtesy of RBFCU, donated to their school organization. May the school that collects the most toys win! Visit livingthroughgivingsa.org for updated information about vendors, toys drop off locations and more. Just click on the Winter Celebration icon. Our Annual Event, Winter Celebration, will also be collecting toys to hand out at the end of the year. Winter Celebration has become one of the largest events in San Antonio! On The Cover By Jose Garza hurch Unlimited isn’t your ordinary church. Founded in 1998 as “Bay Area Fellowship” in Corpus Christi, Texas, the church started out as a small core group meeting of fifteen people. Since then, its congregation has grown to over 10,000 attendees in a 17-year span. In this timeframe, a total of eleven satellite locations have been opened across South Texas and beyond. Pastor Bil Cornelius is excited about Church Unlimited’s newest location. The church leadership planted in the growing Stone Oak community so that more people may experience the same culturally relevant atmosphere observed on a weekly basis at every Church Unlimited location. Bil also knows that there are many other established and successful churches in the area and plans on working with those ministries to help change the lives of those in San Antonio. “There are so many amazing churches in San Antonio, and that’s great! If our church isn’t for you, we really want you to find one that is. We want to provide another super culturally relevant option for people in Stone Oak to come hear about Jesus and change their lives.” Church Unlimited currently meets at the Jose M. Family Life Still Thankful By Debby Seguin

T

hanksgiving is just around the corner and I have to admit, sometimes being thankful isn’t all that easy. After all, life can be difficult, things don’t always go my way, but I have learned that thankfulness is a matter of perspective. For instance, I am thankful for my children. Even though my 4 year old chooses to pour sand down that “really cool pipe” (designed for phone wire) and I get to spend my Saturday helping him dig up said pipe so we can cut it, empty it, splice it and rebury it, I’m still thankful. And even though my daughter “promises” to turn the dryer on, the next morning I know I’m out of luck unless it happens to be “Wear Wet Clothes To School Day,” I’m still thankful. And even though

my son is told he must share 5 chips with his little brother and promptly crushes one chip into 5 pieces, thereby, reaching his “sharing quota” but certainly missing the point, I’m still thankful. Because one of my best friends can’t have any children… I’m thankful for my husband. Even though, when I am in the shower, he feels the need to let me know that “½ a peach has gone bad in the fridge” and “that’s at least 13 cents down the drain” and “do you know how long I have to work for that 13 cents?” And knowing he’s not a “rhetorical question” kind of guy, I begin analyzing the figures while pumicing my heels, but before I can even answer, “37 seconds?” he’s already gone, I’m still thankful. Because of that young woman on the news, 2 children, newly widowed... I’m thankful for my home. Even though it’s so small that Barbie and Ken opted for the “Dreamhouse” instead, and even though I can vacuum it from one outlet, don’t have a dishwasher (unless you count me) and can actually: fix dinner, help with homework, do laundry, answer the phone and start the shower without getting out of my chair, I’m still thankful. Because of that homeless guy I saw near the bowling alley… So remember this Thanksgiving when your great aunt talks about her toe fungus and your niece is sporting a nose ring (to complement the purple hair?) and that strange odor is not coming from refuse but from the general direction of Uncle Joe, be thankful. It truly is a matter of perspective. Debby Seguin can be reached at writewell62@yahoo.com.

Menopause Equals Hormone Decline NOT Mental Illness!!!

By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 ecently I received an official looking letter from Medicare. Unfortunately, I tore it into pieces after reading it. I wish I had framed it for all to see. The Medicare people sent me a letter stating that estradiol - inexpensive, natural, found in every young woman’s body - was now deemed dangerous! The letter said they had received notice from several prescription companies that I was prescribing dangerous estradiol for women over 65. The government does not approve estradiol for menopausal symptoms in the

R

“elderly”. Instead, their recommendations for treatment of symptomatic menopause is - you won’t believe it - to prescribe one of 4 different powerful antidepressants. I don’t argue or doubt there can be side effects to estradiol. Even a young woman can get breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer, or blood clots. Other problems associated with estradiol can be problems with the liver. Side effects and risks that may be associated with anti-depressants actually includes suicide, weight gain, and lack of libido.

I believe the Medicare officials discount the side effects of lack of hormones: vaginal shrinkage and dryness, the loss of collagen from the skin all over the body, the memory decline, crumbling bones, mood swings, insomnia, tooth loss, and even an increase of macular degeneration. How can antidepressants address any of these terrible problems? However please note, not every woman experiences all or even some, of these degenerative effects. Depression is a terrible illness and thank goodness, skilled physicians who specialize in disorders of the mind, psychiatrists, have medications that may alleviate suffering of this type. Depression = treatable mental

or the past 6 years I have used the November column to take some time and share a few things that I am thankful for in my practice, so now it has become tradition. First and foremost I am again thankful for all of the families that trust their eye care to our team. We have been the owners in our location for over 10 years

now and it is remarkable the growth we have experienced and the relationships we have built in caring for the eyes of Stone Oak. Because I live in the Stone Oak area as well, I get to see my patients and their families all throughout the community. It is wonderful to be able to see how the children are growing up right before my eyes. To show our appreciation to our patients, we are planning a Holiday Open House, Tuesday, December 1. We will have refreshments, raffle drawings, and great

specials for all to enjoy. We have some new frame lines that we are highlighting and it will be a great opportunity to use your yearend benefits! Those HSA dollars can be used on eyewear and this would be a great time to use them. Also, it’s always a good idea to think about a cool pair of sunglasses for Christmas for that hard to shop for person! I am thankful for my staff and I appreciate them as they are an invaluable part of my practice. We are blessed to have a great team of staff and doctors. Dr. Denison has

illness, Menopause = treatable hormone decline. I prescribe the dose of estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone very precisely, based on the woman’s life style, blood levels, and chief complaints. I base this treatment as summation of many lectures and my own research, drawing blood on hundreds of patients and monitoring their responses. Hormone replacement is not right for everyone, and neither is an antidepressant. I treat hormone decline and I will discuss your options. Not everyone requires hormone replacement. Menopausal symptomatic sufferers-see me for help. Donna Becker, D.O., Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Enhancement of Life is located at 14603 Huebner Rd., Suite 2601, San Antonio, TX 78231. For more information, call (210) 545-5224 or visit www.antiagingsa.com. been with us for just over 3 years now and lives in the Stone Oak area. Dr. Ip joined our practice 2 years ago and was a graduate from O’Connor HS, and she also lives in the Stone Oak area, so we are all locals now. It is nice to all be so close to the office and we get to see our patients and their families all around the community. Stop by and meet and greet the team at our open house. If you have any eye questions at all or are looking for a family eye doctor, please visit us online at www.visionsource-stoneoak. com or give us a call 210-495-9020 and come in. Special To Welcome Home tudents at Hardy Oak Elementary participated in a new program that the school started this year as part of the Leader In Me program. Every month, the school will be involved in a celebration called Hardy Oak “Hoopla,” where various organizations will come and perform for the students. Each grade level will then recognize two students from each grade level to be honored and recognized for their overall great attitude, behavior, academics, and their use of Covey’s 7 Habits. For the first Hoopla, Hardy Oak welcomed students from the Lopez Pals, the Lopez Panther, and the Lopez Orchestra,

who performed for the school. The Reagan ROTC Drill Team then performed. Isaac Chasse, ROTC senior, spoke to the students on being proactive in school. The “Hive Hero” students were then recognized individually and given a bag of treats from HEB, a medal, and a “Hive Hero” t-shirt. The parents of the students were also recognized at the event. The entire ceremony was enjoyed by all and the students loved seeing Lopez and Reagan students at Hardy Oak. It was a fantastic celebration and everyone is excited to see who will be inducted into “The Hive” next month.

Celebrate The Holiday Season With The Nutcracker Submitted By Yvonne Correa he 2015-2016 Alamo City Dance Company is preparing for their 23rd annual production of The Nutcracker, the holiday classic of a young girl named Clara who is given a gift of a Nutcracker and later that evening dreams of encounters with mice and soldiers in battle. Her Nutcracker turns into a Prince to save the day. When the battle turns, and the Mouse King and his mice seem to be winning, Clara throws her shoe at the Mouse King and saves the Prince. The Prince thanks Clara with a fantastic journey through the Kingdom of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. The Alamo City Dance Company’s, The Nutcracker premiered in 1993 with a cast of 35. This season’s production boasts approximately 100 dancers in 160 roles danced by San Antonians, with the exception of our guest artists. This year’s production features Jennifer Goodman and Luke Joiner of the Joffrey Ballet, Miranda Colley, Matthew Morley, Cody Miley, and Roxanna Pena of the Alamo City Dance Company. The Alamo City Dance Company, founded by Nancy Grossenbacher and Scott Conway, is in residence at the San Antonio School for the Performing Arts.

T

Under the direction of Mr. Conway, ACDC is a repertory company which performs ballet classics, contemporary jazz, and modern expressionism and even explores the realm of tap and ethnic dances, truly an all-encompassing dance company. ACDC dancers are a field of electricity and a powerhouse of dance. The Alamo City Performing Arts Association, Inc., a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization, supports the company and its productions with the goal of promoting dance and the arts in the San Antonio community. An annually changing production of costumes, scenic elements and choreography, The Nutcracker is a wonderful ballet for the entire family. This season’s performances will be Saturday, December 19th at 2 pm and 6:00 pm and Sunday, December 20th at 1 pm at McAllister Auditorium on the campus of San Antonio College. Tickets are $30.00 each for Orchestra seating; $25 each for Balcony seating; and for Groups of 20 or more, $22.50 each. You may purchase tickets online at www.saspa.org. A Word of Christmas Caution Submitted By Dr. Alan Hibberd hough the Christmas season is a joyous and wonderful time, it can also be a dangerous time. We need to remember to be especially cautious to avoid injury during this time of year. Each holiday season in the US, there are more than 6,000 people who present to emergency rooms with fall related injuries. Thousands more are injured with bruises and sprains, but they manage these at home. If there is ice or snow on the ground, step carefully, wear proper footwear, and remember to salt your sidewalks for safety. If you have elderly relatives visiting your home, be sure to clear walking paths of objects that could cause someone to trip and fall. Falls while hanging house lights or decorating a tall tree can also be a problem. Always use a secure ladder and never stand on a stool or piece of furniture hang these high decorations. For outside lights, you may even want to consider hiring a professional. Cuts, eye injuries and choking hazards from Christmas decorations can also be a big problem, so watch out for your little ones! Finally, candle-related fires result in over 100 deaths and 1,000 injuries each season so be very careful that your candles are not left

T

burning unattended or in close proximity to a flammable object. Also, be sure to check your electric hookups to make sure that they are wired correctly and not overloaded. Be especially cautious during this holiday season and have a wonderful Christmas. Dr. Alan E. Hibberd is a boardcertified orthopaedic surgeon with The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group. He treats all orthopaedic conditions, with the exception of the spine, for patients aged 16 years and up. He has a special interest in reconstructive surgery, including total hip replacement and total knee replacement. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Hibberd, call (210) 281-9595.

2015 Winter Celebration Rules

O

n December 5th, the generosity of Stone Oak and the surrounding city will be brought to life along with the Holiday Spirit as Welcome Home Community Newspaper and North Central Baptist Hospital team up with the non-profit Living Through Giving for their annual Winter Celebration. The event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with the High School Marching Bands, cheerleaders, choirs and mascots leading the parade. The highlight of the event will happen around 10:45 a.m. when Santa arrives via AirLIFE helicopter to take pictures and Holiday Wishes from all the children (and Mom and Dad) that come out to see him. Don’t think for a second that Mrs. Claus would miss out on the joy that lights up the children’s faces. She will most definitely be there too. The liveliness of 60,000 lbs. of snow, vendors, and raffle prizes draws in a crowd that makes one of the largest toy drives in San Antonio come to life. Over 10,000 people arrive, many with toys

in hand, to enjoy the snowball fights, carnival rides and funnel cakes. Performances by local schools take place throughout the day bringing the joy of Christmas music and family fun to the festival grounds. The goodness and hospitality of Winter Celebration’s guests, volunteers, and participating schools always makes Winter Celebration a successful event! This year, Independence Hill Retirement Community, Coronado at Stone Oak, and The Haven and The Laurel all generously donated shuttles and buses for easy and convenient transportation to Winter Celebration. (See page 7 for shuttle details). With so many people in attendance, Living Through Giving is thankful to have so many people volunteering, with the help of Out of the Box Productions, the celebration will be yet another great success! In 2014 Living Through Giving’s Toy Drive brought in over 8,000 toys

for children in need. Once the toys were collected in full, the Living Through Giving staff made stops throughout San Antonio where kids in need were be surprised to learn their community had not forgotten them during the holiday season. Donations ranged from action figures and toy cars to dolls, stuffed animals and instruments. With such an array of toys and trinkets, Living Through Giving was able to help light up the faces of so many children and restore some hope within their surroundings. This year Living Through Giving is hoping to shatter that record. “There are so many children, teens and families in need every year. Our mission is to take [on] some of the burden and make sure there is something underneath the tree for each child.” Russell Groomer, Founder of Living Through Giving, stated. Through the course of 2015, Living Through Giving has hosted a number of events and sponsors and businesses

Experience An Unl imited Life At by Jose Garza

hat do you get when you have a church that gives away 27 cars on a single Sunday, has a Pastor that will willingly preach from inside a giant, inflatable snow globe, asks its congregation to spontaneously give away 4500 pair of shoes from off their feet in the middle of service and also invites big-name celebrities such as rapper Rev Run, Brian “Head” Welch and Soul Surfer’s Bethany Hamilton? You get Church Unlimited, the newest church in the heart of San Antonio’s Stone Oak community. “We take God very seriously,” says Church Unlimited’s Senior Pastor Bil Cornelius. “We just don’t take ourselves very seriously. We just love what we do and we have fun doing it!” Church Unlimited isn’t your ordinary church. The new San Antonio campus will be no different from others that have come before it, which have launched in different communities with a similar, precise structure in mind: To engage the everyday individual and family in a number of unique ways, despite age, background and demographic. For the adults, every service begins with a live performance featuring the latest in today’s cutting-edge worship music. The band performs at a level of professionalism and volume that is normally reserved for high-end rock concerts. “It is fun,” says Bil, regarding the music played during Sunday services. “I have had people come up to me and say, ‘I can’t believe I had fun at church.’ Our music is louder. It’s much faster paced.” Childcare and children’s church are taken in a different direction with energetic programs instilled with a Disney-like atmosphere. Church Unlimited’s Corpus Christi location even sports an untraditional children’s wing that closely resembles an actual theme park. Colorful decorations and attractions have been built into its hallways and classrooms for the purposes of drawing in younger children and delivering a sense of wonderment and awe. Church Unlimited also serves youth in sixth through twelfth grade with a dedicated student ministry called FAME. This high energy program reaches out to students in a 30 mile radius from Corpus Christi to unite today’s teenagers through a higher influence not found in today’s secular world. Despite its large attendance, family programs and unusual practices, there’s something else very special about Church Unlimited: The benefits that regular attendance of its Sunday services can have on overall quality of life. Bil Cornelius delivers the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that is relatable and easy to digest for both the seasoned Christian and those not familiar with the Bible, and the lessons can be easily applied to a modern lifestyle. Newcomers can attend any Church Unlimited location on a given weekend and walk away inspired and encouraged to live an “above and beyond” life through Jesus Christ. “We want people to walk out of church on Sunday motivated to go improve themselves. They may be inspired to go back to school or get their marriages straightened out or get out of debt ” says Bil. “We want to help jump-start people’s lives. If they feel like something’s missing, Church

Unlimited might be just what they need to build themselves up and get a second chance.” If you single out any person at Church Unlimited from among its ten thousand strong congregation, you are guaranteed to hear a story on how, through regular attendance and adherence to key Biblical principles, a significant change can be seen in their personal, professional and spiritual lives. “We have experienced a better marriage. Better finances. Better parenting,” explains Joy Ribble, a long-time church member who regularly attends Sunday services with her family of four. “We have used Pastor Bil’s teachings to pull ourselves out of debt. We have strengthened our family through the relevant messages that he preaches every week. He helps us apply the Bible to our lives in every situation.” People like Joy all share similar stories when they go to Church Unlimited. There isn’t a week that goes by without a number of individuals walking away from church knowing how to better themselves immediately through the Biblical principles and core values taught during regular Sunday services. These same people who have come to live a better life because of Church Unlimited learn to exude the same core values that have become the foundation of the church since day one. One of these values is “passion”, which its volunteers and staff members at Church Unlimited make an effort to display in everything they do. “We love what we do and we have fun doing it,” says Daniel Guerra, who began serving in 2013 as a front door greeter. “I was excited to come to a church that welcomes everyone and is so full of life.” The biggest draw for potential attendees is another of Church Unlimited’s core values: Community. The Church has an extremely active small group ministry, called Life Groups, where individuals with the same interests and backgrounds meet outside of the church and enjoy life together. “Some of my closest friends are those I met in a Life Group that I didn’t even know lived around the corner from me,” says Gary Cosgrove, a long time member. “Not only do we see each other on the weekends at church, we also go to dinner, to the movies, to a ball game. Life Groups have been great for my entire family.” But the Church also knows people are hurting everywhere. Bil knows in his heart that there are thousands of individuals in South Texas that are lost, broken and believe they nowhere to go, but he seeks to expand the vision of the church to include San Antonio’s population of 3,000,000. “Many people are falling apart on the inside” explains Bil. “On the outside, everything can seem perfect and all-together, but the inside can be a very different story.” As groundwork for a new, permanent location, Church Unlimited has launched as a weekly Sunday service at Jose M. Lopez Middle School in the Stone Oak area. “Getting your life in order doesn’t require a fancy building,” explains Bil. “That’s why we want to start from the ground up with this Sunday service in a local elementary school.” Bil also knows that there are many other established and successful churches in the area and plans on working with those ministries to help change the lives of those in San Antonio. Lopez Middle School, 23103 Hardy Oak Blvd, San Antonio, Tx 78258 on Sundays at 6:00pm. For more information, visit WeAreChurchUnlimited.com or call 361-993-5900.

What Is The Best Wood For Smoking Meat?

By Cotton Clark Jeff’s Backyard (210) 342-4760 ooler temperatures mean something special for me: smoky barbeque. Specifically, I’m talking about the low and slow type, the 10-12 hour brisket type of barbeque. This begs the question: what wood should I use? This is a dreaded query for us at Jeff’s Backyard; it’s like asking, “Who is your favorite child?” The short answer is, “Use whatever you

like.” Seriously. For us commoners, though, folks use mostly what is readily available in their geographic area. In east Texas, it’s hickory. In the Austin to Dallas corridor, post oak reigns supreme. In San Antonio and the Hill Country, live oak is predominant, and in west Texas the ubiquitous mesquite is king. Pecan runs throughout much of the state except out west. Each type of wood brings

Avoid Costly Repairs Down The Road

i Rusty Belden here for our family at Belden’s Automotive & Tires. Each and every month we try to give you tips to avoid catastrophic failure to your vehicle. This month I would like to focus on simple maintenance tips to help avoid costly repairs down the road. Sticking to your vehicles maintenance schedule is best in order to avoid unexpected and dreaded vehicle repairs. Frequent maintenance will keep your car healthy and will help

minimize future repair costs. The simplest of all maintenance tips I can give to you is to perform frequent oil changes. Frequent oil changes can prevent the buildup of harmful deposits and allow your internal engine components to work efficiently together to lengthen your vehicle’s engine life span. While keeping an eye on your vehicle’s fluid levels is a good first step toward

its own nuance and flavor, and ultimately you’ll probably want to try them all before discovering your own personal favorite. Here is a rundown of the most popular woods for smoking in Texas. Note: the true “smokiness” in the process occurs in the first 1/3 of the cook time when the meat is still raw (approximately the first 3-4 hours in smoking a brisket): Oak: A dense wood that burns clean and hot and remains consistent, yet does not imbue an overpowering taste. A favorite among smoking woods. Hickory: Burns clean and hot like oak yet has a stronger smoky flavor. Blackjack Oak: Burns clean and hot as well; yields a very pleasant yet strong flavor. Pecan: Part of the hickory family, yet burns cooler than hickory; produces a sweet

aroma, but can be overpowering if used too long. Mesquite: The densest wood around, mesquite burns the hottest; yields a very strong flavor. Can also be overpowering if used too long. Lastly, there are woods that should NOT be used anywhere near a BBQ pit: cedar, elm, spruce, pine, cypress, among others. If the pit-master police find you trying to cook with any of these, they’ll take away your brisket privileges! Jeff’s Backyard is proud to offer a great line of outdoor backyard equipment to you. So come on in and see us for all your outdoor grilling needs. You can visit them at 435 W. Nakoma, #104 or contact them at (210) 342-4760 and jeffsbackyard@ att.net.

improving your investment’s longevity, sticking to the manufacturer recommended service intervals in your owner’s manual is equally important. Please see your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual for replacement recommendations. Keep in mind that some owner’s manual will have recommendations options based on weather conditions. Being in South Texas, our weather condition is considered to be extreme due to the hundred plus degree weather that we see each and every year. It is important to keep this in mind as extreme weather conditions will cause components and parts to age and rot more quickly. If you have any questions on your vehicle’s owner’s manual please call our knowledgeable Service Advisors today! Different vehicle manufacturers allow for different schedules as far as your vehicles maintenance. While you may feel

that costs add up quickly when having to change your oil, rotate the tires or replace your air filter every few thousand miles, the preventative care saves you money in the long run. Call us today for recommended preventative maintenance schedules for your vehicle. Our family at Belden’s Automotive & Tires is here to help. Open Your Eyes To The Best Option In Vision Care . . .

I love meeting new people and visiting with the returning patients and seeing the children grow up in all of our families here. The smile of a child putting glasses on for the first time, or the joy of the new teen contact lens wearer never stops being a thrill. Vision is so important and it is a joy to help preserve and protect it for all of our patients.” – Dr. Monica Allison, Vision Source Stone Oak

By Stefanie Young

T

he gift of clear, accurate sight can bring wonder, beauty, excitement and increased functionality into our lives. However, over time, vision needs and concerns may change. Dr. Monica Allison at Vision Source Stone Oak has been treating patients with all vision needs in the Stone Oak community since 2005. She now has 2 associate doctors to assist her in providing this care: Drs. Lindsey Denison and Kim Ip. Their passion is to help each patient see clearly, regardless of their age or vision concern, and this is reflected in the growing practice. Dr. Allison always envisioned running her own optometry practice, helping families with their vision needs in a personable setting. In order to provide her patients with such an intimate level of care with the added benefit of access to the latest technology, she decided to partner with Vision Source, the country’s premier network of private practice optometrists. Her partnership with Vision Source has allowed her to tailor an advanced level of care to each individual patient. “Vision Source is a franchise, but each office is individually owned,” explained Dr. Allison. “We get to use their buying power. There are more than 3,200 offices and thousands of doctors, and we get to see many of the new technologies on the market first because the industry is always introducing new technology and other new products through us. Vision Source also emphasizes licensing to the highest level.” Dr. Allison ensures that her practice is equipped with the latest pieces of advanced technology and the best treatment options available for her patients. To document diseases of the eye, Stone Oak Vision Source uses a retinal imaging system that captures images of the back of the eye. They also have a digital refracting system in every doctor’s lane that is linked to their software and lab to ensure the most accurate prescriptions. Another technology is the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). “This is an instrument that obtains sub-surface images of translucent or opaque materials at a resolution equivalent to a low-power microscope,” Dr. Allison said. “It is effectively ‘optical ultrasound,’ imaging reflections from within tissue to provide a straightforward method of assessing macular degeneration, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis and other conditions.” Stone Oak Vision Source also includes on-site labs that can generate prescriptions the same day―even for nonglare lenses. “We get comments all the time about our high-tech office,” said Dr. Denison. “Every test has a function and

we make sure and provide the most comprehensive care possible for our patients. It’s great to share information with patients about preventative measures that we can do to protect and preserve vision long-term.” New options for contact lens wearers―or those interested―have also exploded onto the optometry scene. “We have daily use lenses that over 90 percent of people surveyed cannot feel in their eyes, even at the end of the day,” Dr. Allison explained. “Dailies Total 1 offers a revolutionary lens design that has never been on the market. For people with astigmatism or needing help up close, there have been tremendous strides in contacts for astigmatism

and multifocal options. We fit a large amount of postsurgical patients in specialty lenses as well and there are some great options available, even if you’ve been told you cannot wear contacts, there may be a choice now.” Dr. Allison and associates are passionate about Orthokeratology or Ortho-K. Ortho-K is a non-surgical process, which actually reshapes the cornea of the eye using contact lenses. The patient wears the lenses overnight, while they sleep, and upon waking, enjoy clear vision all day long, without the assistance of contacts or glasses.“Ortho-K has been shown to slow down nearsightedness in children,” explained Dr. Allison. “My own daughter actually benefits from Ortho-K. It’s a great option for children because they’re not having to worry about their lenses during the day.” Treating children is a large part of Dr. Allison’s practice. She and Dr. Denison participate in the InfantSEE® program – a free public health program for infants between six and 12 months to determine if the baby is at risk for eye or vision disorders. Although school-aged children often have their vision

checked at school or by their family physician, it is not uncommon for reading, focusing or other vision problems to go undetected. Through comprehensive eye examinations, all the doctors at Stone Oak Vision Source check eyes, inside and out, for glaucoma, cataracts, and all other eye diseases. However, the eye also provides a picture into an individual’s overall health and can indicate whether he or she may be suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, reaction to medication, or other systemic diseases. “Looking into the eye is like looking into your body,” explained Dr. Ip. “It gives us a clear picture of the arteries and veins and what’s going on with your health. With the changes in the healthcare industry, all the doctors at Stone Oak Vision Source have embraced their new positioning as primary care physicians. They want their patients to feel that they can contact them in the case of an eye emergency, even after hours. “All major medical insurance will take care of problems with the eye, but places like the emergency room won’t have the equipment that we have,” Dr. Allison said. “We take calls after hours and treat all kinds of eye problems including infections, injuries and dry eye.” Vision Source Stone Oak is also one of only a few providers in San Antonio of TAG Heuer eyewear, which has integrated design, superior materials, ergonomic engineering and is unrivaled in performance and patented innovation. The doctors at Stone Oak Vision Source enjoy finding the perfect solution to their patients’ vision needs. From contact lenses and glasses to medical eye care and LASIK surgery consultation, they are available to those who desire treatment from a confident professional with years of growth and experience. “I love meeting new people and visiting with the returning patients and seeing the children grow up in all of our families here,” said Dr. Allison. “The smile of a child putting glasses on for the first time, or the joy of the new teen contact lens wearer never stops being a thrill. Vision is so important and it is a joy to help preserve and protect it for all of our patients.”

7 Early Clues To Dyslexia

D

By Leslie Jernigan, M.A. Learning Foundations Diagnostic and Learning Center 210-495-2626

yslexia is not a VISUAL problem, but rather a language processing problem. It affects boys and girls nearly equally, does not discriminate among class, race or socioeconomic background, and is independent from intelligence. Dyslexia DOES NOT mean “slow”, “dumb” or “lazy.” In fact, many dyslexic individuals are bright, creative, out-of-the-box thinkers with a neurological difference that makes reading and spelling more difficult. According to renowned dyslexia expert Dr. Sally Shaywitz, “The earliest clues involve mostly spoken language. The very

FIRST clue to a language (and reading) problem may be delayed language. A seemingly innocent speech delay may be an early warning sign for a future reading difficulty.” Once your child begins to speak, look for the following additional signs: Difficulty articulating words. By 5 or 6 years of age, a child should have little difficulty saying age appropriate words. Watch out for mild articulation difficulties (such as difficulties with /l/ and /r/) and for mixing up syllables within words (e.g., saying “aminal” for animal, “pasketti” for spaghetti).

Difficulty with nursery rhymes. Dyslexic children are less sensitive to rhyming. A child’s early familiarity with nursery rhymes turns out to be a strong indicator of reading success. Struggling to find the right words. In part, dyslexia is an expressive language problem, so your child might take a long time to find the right word she is looking for when trying to tell you something. Difficulty learning the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. Dyslexic children struggle with associating the “squiggles” called letters with their names and sounds. By the time a child enters Kindergarten he should know most, if not all, of the upper- and lower-case letters. While dyslexic children have difficulty attaching appropriate names to letters and words and may sometimes reverse letters, there is no evidence to show that they see letters or words backwards. Confusion of right and left and trouble learning to tie shoelaces. Dyslexics tend

to struggle with the fine motor skills, directionality, and sequencing skills required to master show-tying. Family history of reading problems. Dyslexia is genetic, and one of the biggest warning signs is having a family member who has difficulty reading and spelling. Difficulty learning to decode. Decoding is a necessary component in reading well and requires the ability to focus on letters in a word, remember the sounds they make, then blend those sounds into a word. Children with dyslexia don’t decode well without targeted training, so reading becomes slow and frustrating for them as they try to guess at words based on context or shape. Leslie Jernigan has a Masters’ Degree in School Psychology and is Director of Assessment at Learning Foundations Cognitive Training Center. Tips To Keep The School Year Productive

By Steve Johnson he first couple months of the school year provide opportunities to start your family off with the best habits for a productive year. Every child is different in their learning habits, and here are some ideas to try to keep each child going strong all year long. Designate a time of day for homework. Having a routine makes sure that your child knows when to work on their homework each day. Putting them to work on homework after school will allow them to get their work done quickly in order to have their time to play with friends or watch TV with the family, and will prevent cramming at the end of the night. Provide them with a planner. Give your student the option to use a scheduling planner to keep all of their projects and assignments in order. They will be able to write down notes from the teacher about important dates, and they can color code assignment due dates, test days, or other significant school days. Create a designated study room. The home can provide your children with many distractions. Creating a space away from the TV and other toys will allow the child to focus on the project or assignment needing completion. Decorate the space with school supplies and encouraging posters to promote a positive attitude towards studying. Support strong time management. At the beginning of each week, sit down with your child and discuss the projects and homework they have been assigned for the week, and create a schedule for what should be worked on each day. This will prevent last minute scrambling and cramming, and will start a great pattern of managed study habits for future years of schooling. Encourage your child to ask for help. Make sure your child knows when to ask for help. Assistance can come from other

T

students, their teachers, tutors, or you as their parent. Letting them know it’s okay to ask for help early on will teach them seek out resources when they need it. Knowledge is power, and if they struggle in a specific subject, getting help when needed will benefit them in the long term. Find out what works for your child. Does your child remember information more after writing it down, saying it out loud, or reviewing flashcards? Test out different options and encourage regular usage of the tactics that work for your child. Be in contact with the teacher. Make an effort to regularly connect with your child’s teacher. This opens up doors of communication right away, and allows you the opportunity to find out what is and is not working for your child in the classroom. Knowing what’s working in the classroom will help you create a safe study environment for your child in the home. Encourage your child to get involved. Encouraging your child to raise their hand and be an active learner in the classroom is a great way for them to retain information more efficiently. They will be looked at in a more positive light by their peers as well as their teachers, and it may be easier for them to recall specific classroom lessons or activities when needed. There are many different ways you can promote healthy study habits for your child. Utilizing these tactics will help your student maintain a positive direction this school year. These are tips that will benefit them long-term. If your child is struggling with any specific subject, the earlier you act, the easier it is to get back on track. Stone Oak Elementary Presents Destination-America

Submitted By Deborah Deel n Tuesday, October 6th, the Stone Oak Elementary 4th graders sang, danced and thoroughly entertained their family and friends at the General PTA meeting. Their presentation, DestinationAmerica, showcased four genres of truly American born music. First up was Motown out of Detroit. Students clothing styles ran the gamut from Diana Ross glamour to Jackson 5 funk with hairstyles from bouffant to afros. The dancers dripped with 70s cool while they swayed and slid their way across the stage. Next up was Country Music, undeniably a wholly American institution. Cowboys and cowgirls pulled up their boot straps and boot-scooted to a country song, with

O

only a little bit of twang, that would make Nashville proud. Next came some 50s Rock-n-Roll and jitterbug. From American Bandstand to the neon and heavy metal of the 80s, the kids represented the many varieties of good old American rock. Poodle skirts, concert T-shirts and neon fishnets offered something for every parent, and grandparent, to reminisce about. Finally the 4th graders, made it to the great white lights of Broadway. Soloists showed off their amazing vocal skills during this tribute to the genre that showcases the pinnacle of American music talent. “If you can make it there”… and make it they did with their beautiful voices. In November the Bobcats can look

forward to the Fall Book Fair, monsters included, with preview day Thursday, November 6th, and sales tending Wednesday, November 11th. The Book Fair late night will be Friday, November 6th, and will coincide with the Fall PTA Movie Night. Students and families can shop the book fair, dine on pizza, soda and popcorn sold by the Stone Oak Elementary PTA, and enjoy a family movie together. McTeacher Night for Stone Oak will be Thursday, November 12th, and the week long Thanksgiving Break starts Monday, November 23rd. Stone Oak Elementary will also have early release on Tuesday, November 3rd, and Wednesday, November 4th.

Martial Art Students Knockout The Competition Submitted By JJ Persis good teacher leads students to perform at their best during his/ her absence. This was the case at the thirteenth annual South Texas Open on September 26th. Master Raymond Hsu, owner and head instructor at Elite Martial Arts, was unable to attend the tournament due to previous international commitments; however, a team of thirty students from Elite Martial Arts excelled at the South Texas Open. Master Ou, Mr. Everardo and Master Hsu’s eldest daughter, Sabrina Hsu who is a second degree black belt, served as ring coaches this year. Inside the ring,

A

Elite Martial Arts was represented by top performances from Diego Polanco who won Grand Champion in poomsae and Jake Rivera took home second place in sparring. The tournament had 350 participants from 50 different schools across Texas, including referees from out of state. Jorge Delgado, a third degree black belt from Elite Martial Arts, served as one of the leading judges. The tournament, an all-day event, is a requirement for Elite Tae-Kwon-Do students who want to advance to a black belt. Nicholas Dahmer, six years-old and the youngest Elite Martial Arts participant, was joined by a variety of Elite members, including Ariana Escandon—first place

in adults competition and Nayeli Diaz— second place in teen competition. Master Raymond Hsu, a seventh degree black belt, oversees all classes, including the adult lessons at Elite Martial Arts. His career in Tae-Kwon-Do began in Taiwan, where he first taught as an instructor. While his interests are vast, his passion in martial arts led him to open Elite Martial Arts fifteen years ago in San Antonio. Today Elite is home to a wide demographic of students. From daily classes, afterschool camp to summer camp, Elite serves as a second home to its students, of whom many proudly wear a black belt or higher. Master Raymond Hsu and the Elite family

Why Aren’t There More Great Marriages?

By Stephen Cervantes Hope Counseling (210) 490-9062 s you look around you see a lot of average marriages. No one signed up for an average or below average marriage. We all want to live a great love story. We want sizzle, romance and connection. Most marriages start with such promise. They are full of hope, energy and excitement. So, what happens? As a relationship progresses, it often becomes obvious that one spouse has a strong desire for bonding and intimacy. And the other spouse, while good at dating, really has been poorly trained in the area of bonding and closeness. Here’s the secret. If you came from a family that practiced bonding and connecting, then you got the training. You learned to laugh, cry, celebrate and grieve together. Emotions, emotional language and emotional interactions are part of what you learned. If, on the other hand, you were trained by parents who fought, controlled, argued or had addiction issues, then your training was weak. Sorry, you are probably not very good at connecting. When stress arises, you probably get angry, practice blaming, and get lost in excessive entertainment or say, “I don’t know” a lot. Allow me to clarify. Emotional health is available to everyone. If you were under-trained you can still learn and grow. Relationships are where we learn about our emotional strengths and weaknesses. (NoteEither spouse could struggle with emotional detachment. However, here is the most

common counseling presentation.) Comments like these are often heard by wives living in emotionally detached relationships. “My spouse makes me feel small, like a nothing.” “I have an opinion but it does not matter.” “When I speak up my spouse makes me feel stupid.” “I live in a shallow relationship. I want deep love.” “When I express my emotions, my spouse puts up a wall.” Here is a sample of comments heard from emotionally detached husbands. “I don’t talk. It just makes my wife mad.” “I never really think about emotions or being emotional.” “When my wife starts a conversation, I check out.” “It seems like it is impossible to please my wife.” “I do not have the gift of acting desperate like my wife.” Remember, there is always hope. Now serving patients in our new location! 3809 South 2nd Street, Ste. B100 Austin Texas 78704

By Mary Lozano-Jenkins The Jenkins Group, Inc. (210) 490-0161 t’s that wonderful time of the year when we decorate to share and create the Holidays! Start with a theme on your Christmas décor. A favorite theme beginning with the front door and into the tree and mantle. The new Christmas decorating has a lot of BLING… We are also finding that the new Blue tones/ Agua/ etc. are very popular for ornaments. Adding to the new colorsways are the hot pink Fuschia Colors. It is a great idea to have a few trees in the home. Begin with a family tree and then have the children decorate their own tree in their play are and in their rooms. The lights of the Christmas Holiday time are so appealing to all. The theme in your décor can also be used with pillows in the living area, as well as placemats in the dining area. We do Christmas Magical Makeovers. Call us so that we can assist you. Using your own décor and adding a few new items is a great idea as well. Your Home is Your Castle. ovember is a special time of year when we remind ourselves of what we’re thankful for. I’m thankful for so many things in my life, but my dogs top the list. For many of us, our pets are an extension of our family, giving unconditional love and asking for little in return. So this holiday, why not thank them by treating them to something extra special? With a little caution and creativity, your dog can enjoy much of the same delights you do. One of the biggest mistakes people make during the holidays, is giving their pets foods they aren’t used to eating - smothered in rich gravies, sugars, salt, etc. You may think you’re making them the happiest creature on earth, but such a heavy diet, even for just one night, can wreak havoc on their bodies, especially if they’re not use to human foods. Below are a few alternatives to help keep everyone happy and healthy and maybe keep you from a visit to the emergency vet hospital. • Don’t feed turkey skin. Ooohh I know…it’s the best part! But not only is it high in fat and hard to digest, it also holds marinades, oils, and spices used in baking, which can cause an upset stomach. • Set aside some of the good stuff before adding all of the salts, butter, wine, etc. A scoop of plain sweet potatoes, a cup of cooked carrots, even some stuffing without gravy is a delight for your dog.

www.welcomehomesa.com

• Juices and gravies of course are loaded with spices so don’t pour it all over your pet’s kibble, just drizzle! • Desserts: The compound Theobromine in chocolate is toxic to your pet and can even cause death. Caffeine is also present and can pose a danger to your pet’s heart. Unsweetened baker’s chocolate is the worst and contains 8 times the amount of Theobromine as milk chocolate. So keep them far from Chocolate. • If your dog isn’t use to table scraps, don’t offer up a big plate full all at once. This can stress their system. Add a little at a time and freeze the rest for treats later. Your pet is going to be pretty happy with any morsels you give them so choose wisely. Stay away from salts and spices; those are for our taste buds, not theirs. If they can drink out of a toilet, they can surely enjoy turkey without gravy! Reagan Students Add A Twist To Hispanic Heritage Month Submitted By Daniel Segura he diverse students at Reagan High School will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Señora Lowe’s class. They will be providing a picture that represents their family heritage which will allow them to learn about the many different cultures in the classroom. After analyzing the picture, the students will interview the family member that is featured in order to compare their interpretation of this picture. The history the students learn regarding their culture will afford them the opportunity to reflect on what their heritage means to them. Students will then share their pictures and insights and in so doing will gain an appreciation and deeper understanding of the importance of knowing where you come from and of preserving one’s heritage. Reagan students are practicing a variety of TEKS while learning and appreciating a deeper meaning of their heritage, including: I.Cultures Cultural understanding is an important part of world languages education. Experiencing other cultures develops a better understanding and appreciation of the relationship between languages and other cultures, as well as the student’s native culture. Students become better able to understand other people’s points of view, ways of life, and contributions to the world. II.Comparisons Students are encouraged to compare and contrast languages and cultures. They

discover patterns, make predictions, and analyze similarities and differences across languages and cultures. Students often come to understand their native language and culture better through such comparisons. III.Communities Extending learning experiences from the world language classroom to the home and multilingual and multicultural community emphasizes living in a global society. Activities may include: field trips, use of e-mail and the World Wide Web, clubs, exchange programs and cultural activities, school-to-work opportunities, and opportunities to hear speakers of other languages in the school and classroom. The Spanish Language class students at Reagan High School are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by providing a picture that depicts their family heritage. After conducting a parent interview, analysis, and reflection, students will present their information to the class.

Good For You Coffee And Tasty Cakes By Tanji Patton Goodtaste.tv one are the days when just any cup of coffee will do. Starbucks upped the ante for coffee drinkers, and now many local baristas have raised the bar even higher. I’ve become as picky about my coffee as I am about my wine. The Fish Thanksgiving By Blake Groomer Groomer’s Seafood (210) 377-0951 know what you’re thinking. “What does fish have to do with Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is all about Turkey!” Well, maybe to some, but believe it or not Thanksgiving is one of our heaviest times of the year. Why is that? Just look at the first Thanksgiving, or perhaps I should say, the “Fish Thanksgiving!” At the First Thanksgiving, turkey was actually not the main attraction. Being in a coastal area, seafood was in fact one of the main stars of the Thanksgiving show.

I

Lobster, mussels, clams, oysters, and eels made up the bulk of the menu. Fresh cod and bass were also served up by the dozen. In fact, it was said that Chief Massasoit went to and from the ocean “carrying as many eels as he could handle”. Today the tradition of seafood still holds true in many households. In the Northeast, lobster is commonly found side by side with the turkey, on the West Coast it’s not unheard of to have a nice slab of salmon in the center of the table and here in the Gulf region,

You can expect increased mental focus and productivity, weight loss, and an incredible boost in healthy, natural energy. So, now that I’ve got you all fired up for that next cup of coffee, how about some delish coffee cakes to go with. One of my all-time favorite recipes was discovered on one of our trips to Napa. We stayed at a delightful turn of the century B&B, and I asked the proprietors for the recipe to their delicious coffee cake. You can bake it the night before you serve it. Check out the recipe at goodtaste.tv. Another all-time favorite comes from

especially in Louisiana, seafood-heavy jambalaya is a Thanksgiving dinner staple. This is a dish consisting of fish, sausage, rice, and many spices and is one of my personal favorites. It’s simple, it’s easy and while there are many great Seafood Thanksgiving recipes to share (oyster stuffing anyone?), I’ve decided to give you this spicy little number of a recipe called Gulf Shrimp Jambalaya using our boat run shrimp. Ingredients: 2 lbs of Boat run Gulf Shrimp, 1lb of Andouille sausages, cut into circles, 1 white onion, chopped into 1/4 inch pieces 2 green peppers cut into 1/4 pieces, 3 stalks of celery cut into 1/4 pieces, 3 cloves of chopped garlic, 1 dash of crushed red pepper, 1 tsp Cayenne pepper, 1 28 oz can of diced tomatoes, 2 fresh bay leaves, 1 fresh bundle of thyme, 5 chopped scallions, and 2 cups of long grain rice. Directions:

1. Shell the shrimp and put the shells in water to boil for 20 min to create a stock 2. Lubricate a large pot with olive oil and add the sausage pieces and cook for 5 minutes 3. Add in the peppers, celery, and onions and season with salt and the crushed red pepper 4. Cook this mixture for about 8 minutes or until it softens. Then add in the garlic and cook for 3 more minutes, and then add in the tomatoes and cayenne pepper 5. Stir in the rice and add 4 cups of the shrimp stock with along with the bay leaves and thyme and cook for 25 minutes. 6. Add in the shrimp and cook for 5-7 more minutes until shrimp is pink. Top with scallions and you’re ready to serve! I think you’ll enjoy changing things up just a bit with seafood!

Making Your Deck Last

W

By Barry Hagendorf Deck & Patio Care (210) 822-9147

ith 20 years of experience, I have become the expert on how to care for decks, fences, flagstone, and pebblestone. My expertise is in cleaning and sealing exterior surfaces and exterior and interior painting. A few years ago a large limb fell from a tree in the forest. Now, just years later this log is rooting and turning back to soil. Nature does that for us. Now, let’s say we had taken that same log to a saw mill and turned the lumber into 2x6 deck boards. In the construction phase the carpenter will build the deck in a way to eliminate moisture traps. Architects Digest will give this newly constructed deck a 9-14 year life with out any care or sealing. We would like that expensive deck to last 35+ years. This can be accomplished by using an oil base penetrating sealer like Barry’s Premium

Blend. Cedar and Redwood boards rot from the bottom up. It is important to use a sealer that will follow the dry cell structure line. Sealer will flow to the bottom of crack, through the knots, down the nails, and over the end of the boards. Periodic resealing between 12 and 18 months allows the sealer to penetrate deeper and deeper with each renewal. You never lose the sealer being placed into the wood, but with gravity the sealer continues to move down through the board. I now maintain over 10,000 decks using the Barry’s Premium Blend oil penetrating system. As a Welcome Home reader, you are entitled to a 5 percent discount on any scheduled deck or patio service offered by Barry Hagendorf’s DECK AND PATIO CARE. As a Welcome Home reader, please take advantage of the $59 discount located in this paper.

The Reagan Cheer team set up in the Rattlers Den and greeted 173 participants for what would turn out to be the best clinic ever.

Submitted By Sylvia Lopez Gaona t was a beautiful day on Saturday, October 3rd. The Reagan Cheer team set up in the Rattlers Den and greeted 173 participants for what would turn out to be the best clinic ever. The new recruits showed up in their bows and t-shirts from past years’ clinics so we knew we were in for something special. They included a good mix of cuties from Stone Oak, Hardy Oak, Wilderness Oak, Canyon Ridge, Tuscany Heights, Vineyard Ranch, and Las Lomas Elementary Schools; Lopez and Bush Middle Schools; and Reagan High School along with a few from other surrounding schools. The Reagan cheerleaders worked with grade-level groups to teach the girls cheers, motions and how to lead a crowd. After lunch, the participants showed their parents from the Rattlers Den stage that they were ready to cheer at that night’s game. Heard in the parking lot afterwards were lots of excited conversations about new friends,

bows and signing up for cheer class. As kickoff for the Stone Oak Superbowl neared, the stands filled with cheer clinic cheerleaders and their families. The grade level groups took turns on the sidelines cheering their hearts out for the Rattlers. A fan favorite was a cheer the newly-minted cheerleaders made up on their own. They really needed them in what was a tough game and they’re sure they made the difference for another Reagan win. They appreciate all of the clinic participants and their families for spending the day with us. Special thanks go out to their sponsors and Alamo Sports Photography for their support in making the clinic a success. Please join they Reagan Cheer team again at next year’s clinic and at all of the Rattler sports events. Follow them on Twitter and Instagram at @RReaganCheer to see where they’ll be next! #WEareReaganCheer

Teen Girl Scouts Enjoyed An Active Fall Schedule Submitted By Risa Weinberger he Teen Association of Girl Scouts, TAGS as they call themselves, is made up of Girl Scouts from all over the Stone Oak area. Any Girl Scout in the 6th -12th grades can participate in any and all of the TAGS Girl Scout activities. During the month of October, many of the TAGS girls enjoyed an afternoon at Bahama Buck’s during their regular 2nd Sunday meeting and planned upcoming activities. A group met on Saturday, October 17 to “get lost in the maze” at the Southwest MAiZE in Hondo. These girls also enjoyed a campfire cookout and, of course, s’mores. Immigration Writing Program Celebrates Generations Submitted By Nikki Young s the founding partner of the law firm De Mott, McChesney, Curtright and Armendariz (DMCA), Joseph B. De Mott helped bring the Celebrate America writing program to San Antonio. Now, as he retires, the firm that bears his name is continuing its mission to educate students on the benefits of immigration. “We’re very proud to have supported Celebrate America over the years,” says Lance Curtright, a partner in the firm (which has facilitated the San Antonio chapter of the program since 2004). “And we’re looking forward to supporting it for many more years to come.” The Celebrate America program is sponsored nationally by the American Immigration Council, and is open to all public, private, or home-schooled students at the fifth grade level. “The students of today will be the decision makers of tomorrow, so it’s essential to make sure they’re educated on issues like immigration,” says partner Ruth Lozano McChesney. “That’s why programs like this are so important. They help students learn by taking part in the conversation.” In recent years, the local chapter of the program has gained a partner in the Institute

of Texan Cultures, which has judged entries and donated prizes for winning students. As Christian Clark, Senior Program. Coordinator at the Institute, explains, “The goal of the Institute is to share all the different cultures that make up our state. And that’s a part of Celebrate America too. So when the firm invited us to be part of the program, it was a great opportunity to share and expand on our shared mission.” In preparation for the 2015-2016 school year, DMCA is inviting students and their families to participate in Celebrate America. Participants can write a poem, essay, or short story on the subject of “Why I Am Glad America Is a Nation of Immigrants”; all entries must be 500 words or less, and must be submitted by E-mail to Nikki Young, Assistant Coordinator for the program, at Nikki.Young@DMCAUSA.com no later than Friday, December 11. All entries will be judged by a panel of judges from around the city. One publicschool student, and one private- or homeschool student, will be selected, and each will receive $100 cash, a replica of the Statue of Liberty, and a gift certificate from the Institute of Texan Cultures. Other awards will be presented to the second and third place winners in each category. In addition, the teacher who

submits the most entries will also be awarded $100 cash. Participating students and teachers in past years have also been invited to attend a naturalization ceremony, and to read, and expect to be invited again in 2016. “Throughout the program, we’ve always reached out to area schools, and we’ve visited them to talk about what immigration means,” says Curtright. “That’s going to continue, and we’ll continue to reach out to students and their Isabella Galvan (a student at Blessed Sacrament Catholic School) reads her winning entry in the Celebrate America writing program at a naturalization families.” McChesney ceremony in 2015, as U.S. Magistrate Judge John Primomo looks on; the program adds, “Immigration is now accepting entries for the 2015-2016 school year. is always going to be a hot topic in our Celebrate America program, please visit national discourse, which makes what we celebrateamericawritingcontest.org (select do so necessary. NEISD Marching Bands Demonstrating Skills Submitted By Daniel Segura he marching bands of North East ISD have had a very successful and exciting start to the 2015 competitive season, and are looking forward to demonstrating their skills at the annual NEISD Fall Marching Band Festival on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Heroes Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m. All seven District high school bands have been hard at work since August 1 working on their field shows, and many began competing the last weekend of September. We are excited to report that over the last two weekends, NEISD bands have been named Champion in two out of the three Texas Bands of America regionals competitions, and all of the programs who competed have had a great start to their season. On Oct. 3, Churchill, Johnson, and Reagan Bands competed at the Bands of America Houston Regional in Conroe, TX. The regional in Conroe featured 32 bands from all across the state, including several former Grand National Finalists and San Antonio Regional champions, and the District is thrilled that Reagan High School

was named BOA Houston Champion for 2015, placing 1st in finals. Reagan took home awards for Outstanding General Effect, and tied for Outstanding Visual performance in finals. Johnson High School placed 2nd overall in finals, took home the award for Outstanding Music Performance overall, and tied Reagan for outstanding Visual Performance. Finally, Churchill High School advanced to finals for their second regional this year, and placed 7th overall. “North East ISD is one of the only districts in the United States that consistently sees three of its high schools earning Finalist Status at Bands of America Regionals, an amazing testament to the hard work of our students, great instruction of our band staffs, and support of our administration and community,” said Jarrett Lipman, Instrumental Music Coordinator for NEISD. On Sept. 26, Johnson traveled to McAllen, TX to compete in the Bands of America McAllen Regional against 31 of the finest bands from across the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. Johnson was named Champion of the BOA McAllen regional, placing 1st in finals, and bringing home

Peanut Desensitization Treatment Spirit Teams Making A Difference With MDA Puts Stone Oak On Map Submitted by Erin Kirwan ometimes we make a new friend in places or among circumstances where we least expect. That couldn’t be truer for two San Antonio boys, who have become best buds fighting a common enemy – One that likes to hide and whose scent alone leaves their moms in fear. This enemy is peanut. For the non-allergic, it is sometimes hard to understand how this little, often-invisible food, can control where someone plays, eats, or even whether they can go on a family trip. But for allergic kids like 8-yearold Kaden Moths and Alex Kingdon, the danger is real. Alex tested positive to peanut at ten months old. Another test showed he is highly likely to suffer an anaphylactic reaction to it. “People are so afraid when they hear your child has a peanut allergy – he’s been excluded from everyday kid things, like birthday parties,” Alex’s mom, Stacey Kingdon says. That could soon change for Alex and Kaden, thanks to an up-and-coming desensitization treatment with Board Certified Allergist, Dr. Patricia Gomez Dinger of Advanced Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, located in Stone Oak. Together, under Dr. Gomez Dinger’s care, Alex and Kaden are undergoing Peanut Oral Immunotherapy, or what’s more commonly referred to as POIT. Dr. Gomez Dinger is the first physician in South Texas, one of only fifty Allergists in the United States, to conduct Peanut Desensitization. The moms, having never met, both approached Dr. Gomez Dinger about POIT several years ago. After researching the POIT protocol for over two years and weighing the risk, Dr. Gomez Dinger decided to move forward with the treatment, in late August. “Knowing the treatment would require

S

the boys, both eight years old, to spend a lot of time in my office for the next twenty-orso weeks, it just made sense to conduct the POIT treatment together,” says Dr. Dinger. As strange as it sounds, POIT works by giving Alex and Kaden doses of peanut, the same thing that could send them into a dangerous reaction. Dr. Dinger started the boys on just a trace of peanut mixed with Kool-Aid. This month, the boys will reach what Dr. Dinger calls the peanut challenge, where the boys will eat 12 whole peanuts, twice in one day. If they show no signs of reaction, they “graduate” from POIT. POIT graduates must eat a dose of peanut, daily, for the next several years. POIT is not yet FDA approved. It has an 85-percent success rate. As for the boys, Kaden and Alex have developed a pretty tight friendship bonding over how fast they can each take their POIT treatment and playing video games. Kaden says he cannot wait until the day he is able to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for the first time. Alex dreams about going to birthday parties and sleepovers – maybe even, he says, with Kaden by his side. Soon, as San Antonio’s first POIT graduates, Kaden and Alex will be able to take their newfound friendship anywhere, and do almost anything (where there might be peanut), and not be afraid.

Reagan Cheer and Dance members promoting MDA Mobile Sales.

Submitted By Cari Goodyear, RHS Spirit Board he ability to jump, flip, twist, turn and leap is something the Reagan High School Cheer, Dance, Drill, and Pep Squad team members do every day. Their muscles get a workout as they practice and perform although they realize some people do not have that opportunity. The spirit community has rallied together with the Muscular Dystrophy Association MDA to be advocates on behalf of those who are affected with muscle disease. During the month of September, the spirit teams sold $1 and $5 mobiles to help raise funds, support and awareness to the MDA mission to save and improve lives of people fighting muscle disease through research efforts, empowering families, and

providing transitions through a medical equipment program. Over the past several years, the spirit teams have raised about $5,750 for the South Texas district with this money specifically designated for local kids to attend MDA summer camp.
