The Month Of Love & Lobster

ear Welcome Home Readers, Thank you for picking up the February edition of our paper. This month is always a great time of year and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s perfect for spending time with your loved ones and showing them what they mean to you. We are blessed to live in a beautiful city with so many options for celebrating special occasions and holidays. There are so many romantic restaurants and venues to visit, as well as our beautiful Riverwalk and scenic Hill Country. Within this edition of Welcome Home, you will find some wonder ideas to get you in the mindset of the valentine’s season. Groomer’s Seafood is having some great specials all month long that are sure to be a hit with the family or that special someone. You can find out more on page 23 and see that Tanji and Jeff’s Backyard have to say about the February culinary trends. If you’re special someone is a furry friend in need of some pampering, you should visit our friends over at Camp Bow Wow. They recently opened a new location in the Stone Oak area and are running specials. Be sure to let them know you found them in the Welcome Home Newspaper! If the food and celebrating doesn’t have you feeling like a hopeless romantic, turn to page 25 to read about the new found love within the Stone Oak area. We had a fantastic story that was submitted about men and women finding love all over again, even as retired seniors! And as if that isn’t enough, gifts of gems

and gold are always tied into the Valentine’s theme. I am so excited with our front cover and to celebrate the artistic flare of Lotus Jeweler’s owner, Andy Chhor. If you haven’t visited, you owe yourself this amazing treat. It’s like going the Disneyworld of jewelry stores. Andy Chhor is so talented, I guarantee you will be amazed by all the possibilities that he can make come true. I found the most amazing engagement ring for my fiancée within Lotus Jewelers. It is unique and one of a kind, making it all the more special. Let him know Welcome Home sent you when you pay him a visit. As always, thank you for all the submissions we received. We have so many wonderful children in our areas to be recognized each and every month. If you have a business in our areas that is so blessed it does not need to advertise, consider sponsoring a school page for the many different groups to be recognized. As a member of our community, remember to visit the businesses in this newspaper and let them know you saw them in your Welcome Home.

ndy Chhor, professional jeweler and owner of Lotus Fine Jewelers, is passionate about bringing ideas and feelings to life – pouring them into a tangible, unique, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. “I became a professional jeweler because I wanted a way to express my ideas and how I see the world,” Chhor explained. “The ideas I have are what inspires the designs that I make. Anything that I see, hear, feel – I can and will make a piece that brings that meaning or moment to life.” Lotus Fine Jewelers opened its doors in November of 2015, and despite now owning three stores, Chhor has never taken a backseat in the business. No job is too small and the most intricate detail is never overlooked. “I design and manufacture every piece of jewelry, from start to finish,” explained Chhor. “And all work is done in-house. A piece is never sent out to be completed offsite – from the initial conception of the idea to the finished product.”

Texas Means RODEO!

I

t’s time to confess. I am not a native Texan, and although I love almost everything about Texas, there are a few things that have taken some “gittin’ used to”. Tamales for Christmas, sweating in December and jalapeno ice-cream to name a few. But soon, a favorite, long-standing Texas tradition will be here again. And (to quote Garth Brooks) they call it ro-de-o. For a transplanted Yankee, there are a few things about this event that are a little hard to understand. It all starts with a “Cowboy Breakfast”. What makes this a cowboy breakfast is that they call it a cowboy breakfast. It is served in a big parking lot at about 5:30 a.m. Now who would not want to be a part of that!? (Hello?! Anyone with kids and a job…) But you watch the news and there they all are, and not a one of ‘em a cowboy. Go figure.

Chhor has been able to successfully build upon his natural, innate artistic ability by mastering a variety of fields while never losing sight of the most important aspect of any business – the customer. At Lotus Fine Jewelry, there are only possibilities. No design is too big or too small, too detailed or too vague – Chhor and his team can make your dream for a stunning, meaningful piece become a reality. If you feel it, Lotus Fine Jewelers can help you see it in a way you may have never imagined.

Then there are the Trail Riders, a large group who ride horses for several days to get here in time for the rodeo. What are they? Amish? Actually, it did initially seem rather alluring in a “been reading too many romance novels” kind of way. You know, “saddle up, move ‘em out”, singing by the campfire sort of thing? Until I realized there were no hitching posts at the front of the Embassy Suites. Then there is the rodeo itself, which appears to be merely a series of concerts, interrupted occasionally by sawdust, horse poop and Gabby Hayes look-a-likes. But any true Texan knows it is really sawdust, horse poop and Gabby Hayes look-a-likes interrupted occasionally by a concert or two. Perhaps my attitude is a bit skewed, but being a city-gal, the closest I ever came to anything “rodeo-like” was being run over by the pony cart driver at our school carnival. So going to the rodeo every year (my sworn duty as the mother of 3 Texans) is quite a traumatic event. We travel from funnel cake stand to funnel cake stand until I hear a whinny or a neigh, which causes me to spontaneously tuck-and-roll. To all this, add carnival rides and scandalously overpriced (and dare I say it, not health inspected) food and it looks remarkably like a county fair! So why do I go? Well, 1) it’s a part of my children’s history, 2) after 30 years, I am still trying to prove I am worthy of being a Texan, and 3) those funnel cakes are fabulous! Five Tips For Preparing For AP Alamo City Chocolate Factory Exams This Spring By Steve Johnson, Owner of College Nannies + Tutors pring time is just around the corner, bringing with it blooming flowers, warm sunshine, and AP testing. One of these activities requires active preparation. With these few tips, a great score on the AP exam is within reach. Start preparing early The AP exam is meant to test your knowledge on an entire year’s worth of material, so you can’t leave studying until the night before the test. By looking over old notes and graded tests early in the class and throughout the second semester, you will familiarize yourself with the content you will be tested on. Use practice materials Bookstores, libraries, and classrooms are filled with guidebooks about how to study for the AP exam and what is to be expected on these exams. Take advantage of the content they provide and the advice they have. Practice, practice, practice! Study in groups or with a tutor Conveniently located in your AP class is a group of people who will also need to study for the AP exam. Get a group together and quiz each other, discuss notes and tests, make flash cards, and look over material. Additionally, working one-on-one with a tutor on test preparation has many benefits, such as individual attention and advice

S

from people who have taken similar exams. Meet with your teachers Your AP course instructors are great sources of advice for preparation. After all, they are the ones that are teaching you the material. Meet with them to discuss what information you should be studying, what past tests have looked like, and where to find extra preparation material. Practice with former AP exams The College Board website provides practice questions and material from old AP exams. Some of the content requires you to create a free College Board account. The information is extremely helpful, especially coming from the source of the tests. Passing these important exams is something you can accomplish with dedication and a little bit of help. Use your resources, pay attention in class, and above all, don’t let yourself get too stressed out. To learn more about one-on-one tutoring services, contact the staff at College Nannies + Tutors. Our experienced tutors can help you study and prepare for your upcoming AP exams this spring so that you can walk into test day with confidence. Learn more at collegetutors.com or call 210-202-0303.

Andropause, Male Menopause, May Cause Severe Symptoms

By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 any times the husband comes to me at the urging of his wife. Arms folded, grim expression, “My wife thinks I need to be checked”. In the 15 minute free pre-visit, I tell them about what I do: “I am a numbers person. I measure 3 pages of labs and those values drive treatment”. I explain that their urologist will do the examination of the prostate, but I will closely evaluate labs ranging from vitamin levels, markers of potential stroke and heart attack, as well as hormones and the standard labs.

“Look, I work for you. I provide information and together we think what ‘shall we do’ with this information.” Men’s testosterone gradually declines, usually about 1% per year after age 40. Men also make estradiol, a female hormone, from the conversion of testosterone. So when testosterone declines, so does estradiol. A common practice in the men’s testosterone clinics is to prescribe a medication to artificially lower estradiol levels-a big mistake. New research has revealed that

Understanding Your Benefits For Eye Care

W

By Monica Allison, O.D. Stone Oak Vision Source (210) 495-9020

ith a new year bringing in new insurance coverage for many people, we want to share some information about insurance and eye exams. The eye is definitely a complex part of our body and maybe that’s why our insurance to cover the eye can be complex at times. There are 2 different insurances that “cover” the eye.

The first is vision insurance and this covers routine exams. The second is your major medical carrier- and this covers eyes with a medical complaint, but sometimes can have a routine benefit too! The important thing to know is that Vision Plans only cover routine visits. No red eyes, no pink eyes, no itchy eyes, no dry eyes, no glaucoma, etc. are ever covered with a vision plan. The good thing to know is at Stone Oak Vision Source, we are credentialed for both vision plans and medical plans.

men need estradiol, too, for their bones and brain health. Recently, I treated a man who had been prescribed estradiol lowering drugs along with an incorrect (low) amount of testosterone—his main problem? He could not think clearly, felt “not right”. Men may suffer from osteoporosis, on thinning of their bones, which may be linked to low estradiol and low testosterone levels. I want to provide hormones in a safe, balanced fashion to copy or mimic what your body made inside of you at a younger age. Signs of low testosterone in men may include: anxiety, inability to make a decision, lack of drive and endurance, and of course, lack of libido, the desire for sex. If you think you may need glasses because you are experiencing blurred vision, or you are currently a glasses or contact lens wearer and want to update your prescriptions, you should use your vision plan. If you are not having any eye problem and just want a routine check-up, this is also the insurance for you. Not everyone has a vision plan. We can check to see if you have one as they are usually attached to your major medical carrier. They usually have a copay for the exam portion and an allowance to go towards hardware (eyeglasses or contact lenses). The next kind of insurance is your major medical. As previously mentioned, your medical insurance might cover routine eye exams too. Some plans even have allowances

This observation is based on my observation and the change I see in men after proper prescriptions which might include books to read, documentaries to view, as well as medications and supplements. Recently, some studies have indicated that testosterone may be implicated in an increased risk for stroke and heart attack. Some researchers have criticized those studies as being flawed in design. Other problems that are associated with testosterone may be an increase in prostate size. Harvard urologist Dr. Morgentaler largely discounted the unproven theory that testosterone caused prostate cancer in his book, TESTOSTERONE FOR LIFE. Donna Becker, D.O., Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Enhancement of Life is located at 14603 Huebner Rd., Suite 2601, San Antonio, TX 78231. For more information, call (210) 545-5224 or visit www.antiagingsa.com. for hardware as well. Most likely though, the medical plan covers eyes with a medical complaint. This means if you get something in your eye and need help getting the foreign body out, or if you get pink eye, or if you have any eye condition that is not routine, your medical insurance covers this. Our staff will be happy to check both forms of your insurance if you have them and determine which will give you the best coverage for the exam you receive. All of the doctors at Stone Oak Vision Source are certified to treat and manage eye disease. Please visit our web site www. visionsource-stoneoak.com or call 4959020 to schedule your appointment today.

Big smiles from Reagan’s 11 newly chosen All-Staters and their delighted Directors.

Submitted by Lisa Johnson, Reagan Choir Booster Club Board Member e’re so proud of all of our choir kids who courageously auditioned for the Texas All-State Choirs this season. Reagan started the journey with 58 at the Region level, moved 29 on to the Pre-Area stage, sent 19 to the final Area audition, and are tremendously proud to say that 11 of those will be performing with one of 3 All-State Choirs at the 2016 TMEA Convention, taking place February 10–13 at the Henry B. Gonzales Center. Those 11 students are: Julianna Comstock, Evan Couch, Mary Dillon, Eric Johnson, Caroline King, Alex Leal, JR Pruski, Rachel Ryan, Mikayla Simonsen, Morgen Simonsen, and Andrew Swetonic. Being chosen to be in any one of the All State choirs is “the highest honor a Texas music student can receive,” according to the TMEA web site. The choirs are made up of the very best of all auditioned singers

throughout the state of Texas. Even more impressive is the number of Reagan students who are part of this elite assembly every year. In 2014 and 2015, Reagan had the greatest number of students from a single school as members of All-State choirs. Way to go Rattlers! February also means it’s time for the annual Reagan musical. This year, the choir is very excited to, once again, combine forces with Reagan Theater and Orchestra to present Rogers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Musical performances will begin on Thurs., 2/4 and continue through Sun., 2/7. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening shows begin at 7 PM. Saturday matinee is at 1 PM, Sunday finale performance begins at 3 PM. All performances will be in the Reagan Auditorium located at 19000 Ronald Reagan, San Antonio, TX. You can purchase tickets online for $10-15 each at showtix4u.com. You won’t want to miss out on the magic and music of this much-loved fairy tale, so come join the fun!

“You’re always set for a sitter.” No really – local business owners Lynn & Steve Johnson mean it.

Special To Welcome Home t’s Tuesday morning. The company dinner is four days away and your babysitter just backed out. Instead of working on your job, you’re working the phone trying to line up a sitter. It’s Sunday afternoon. The fridge and the cupboards are bare, but the thought of walking up and down the grocery store aisles with little bodies jumping in and out of the cart is exhausting and overwhelming. When Grandma and Grandpa are out of town and the high school neighbor is busy with her own social life, the options for busy parents are limited. They can either spend hours on the phone trying to line up a sitter or put their lives on hold (again)! In a world where you can find a date, order a pizza and binge watch every episode of “Gilmore Girls” all from your smartphone, the solution is just an app away. The new My Sitters™ App from College Sitters connects moms and dads who need help with qualified, reliable sitters who have a passion for watching kids. Now closing in on their second year of operations in the San Antonio market, Lynn & Steve Johnson, local Franchisees of College Nannies + Sitters + Tutors are excited about the rapid growth in the

We had a Nanny, Madelyn, from College Nannies and Tutors for a week. She was so awesome. My 3 year old and 5 year old loved her. She was extremely attentive and she even kind of scheduled their day. She made sure they had craft time, play time outside, downtime, etc. She even baked cookies and cupcakes with them. One day she took boxes (we had just moved) and she turned them into cars and made our living room a drive in theater. She made the girls movie tickets and popcorn buckets out of construction paper and they watched a movie at the “drive in theater”. She constantly played with them and kept them occupied. She was caring and responsible. She was really world class. My kids had a great week” – Erin W February 2016 • Welcome Home • 78258

The team at College Nannies and Tutors in Stone Oak has exceeded my expectations above and beyond! Being able to utilize their on call sitter app has been a lifesaver for me on many occasions, it’s easy to use and I don’t have to worry about making a phone call with busy kids running around in the background. I am able to check specific sitters availability and schedule them without talking on the phone. Lynn and her staff are professional and knowledgeable with our families needs. They not only have sent us qualified nannies and sitters but also assist us with their tutoring program as well. Our middle and high school aged children have improved grades in math and their tutors have impressed us with their knowledge and patience. I can’t thank CNT Stone Oak enough for their service! – Stacie B. Stone Oak and north San Antonio area. “2015 was an amazing year. Our first full calendar year in business and we provided exceptional childcare and tutoring services to over 250 local families.” This growth fueled development of a second learning center in northwest San Antonio. “We build stronger families. And we use our core values of ‘Can Do Attitudes’, ‘Growth and Results driven’, and ‘Leave It Better’ – as guiding principles for our team and the families we support.” “Our whole business is based on providing impactful, full-service childcare and customized one-on-one tutoring,” Lynn explained. For all of their services, the first step in the process is a personal, complementary family meeting. At this meeting, they sit down with the family and get a good feel for their individual needs. Then they jointly develop a plan for the nanny/sitter or a goal for tutoring. And unlike typical agencies and clearing-house websites, their nannies, sitters and tutors are all employees of the company. What that means for a family is that everyone

coming into their homes or working with their children, have passed a thorough recruiting and hiring process including a complete, industry leading, background check as well as basic and advanced training. It also means the hassle of managing and coordinating logistics is taken off the families’ plate. And their ability to deliver quality child care services got significantly easier in 2015 with the franchise-wide roll out of their industry leading My Sitters App for IPhone and Android. Families can book a specific sitter for care on the go, in real time, and receive a confirmation notice once the nanny/sitter confirms care. “Our families love it,” stated Lynn. “They can literally be having coffee with a friend, decide to go out, pull their phone out, book care and have a confirmation all before finishing their cup of coffee.” Both owners credit their growth to the hard work and dedication of their role model nannies, sitters and tutors. “At the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the quality of the services we provide,” Steve emphasized. “The feedback from our follow up communications on our care and tutoring continues to provide us with the best indicator of the families’ satisfaction with our services. That satisfaction is what is driving our growth.”

Tips To Combat Seasonal Allergies

Flonase and Nasacort are also now available over-the-counter as well. • Frequent questions physicians get are about decongestants. Most patients find oral decongestants such as Sudafed helpful especially for sinus pressure however not all people should take decongestants. Discuss with your doctor whether a decongestant is safe for you to use especially if you have high blood pressure or heart problems. Intranasal decongestants may be a safer option for brief use (less than 3 days) but can actually cause worsening congestion and drainage with prolonged or frequent use. • For those with persistent allergy symptoms despite the above treatments and/ or have underlying asthma or lung problems, adding a leukotriene receptor antagonist such as Singulair can be beneficial but requires a prescription.

• Cromolyn nasal spray is another option as it has low side effects but may be less effective than the intranasal steroid and needs to be dosed more frequently. • Importantly, don’t forget non-medication treatments. Saline nasal rinses, allergen avoidance, dust control measures, changing out central air/heating filters, regular dusting and washing of bedding, removal of bedroom carpeting if possible, and use of air-purifiers can all be helpful. • If still suffering with uncontrolled symptoms, discuss with your doctor allergy testing and immunotherapy. Bottom line, people want to remain independent; where they are free to do what they want when they want. Everything possible is done to allow residents to remain independent, from providing a variety of fitness classes to stay fit, tons of social opportunities to stay stimulated and active and by making life just a little easier by providing services that allow the time to play, to include housekeeping, maintenance, landscaping, and even transportation services to scheduled outings, shopping, the airport and medical appointments. Mrs. Holmes sums it up beautifully, “When someone asks me why I moved to Independence Hill, I say – ‘Why not?’ Why live alone in a big house and have to

Why not live in a retirement community that has so many advantages – peace of mind for my family, and me, great neighbors, housekeeping services, excellent meals, and a friendly staff?” The only way to experience the Independence Hill way of life is to come by and see it for yourself. Where Anything Is Possible!

Lotus Fine Jewelers . . . By A.R. Vorhies

O

dds are, you own a piece of jewelry that holds a special significance in your life. Perhaps it was given to you by a loved one – a parent, spouse or someone who has passed away. Jewelry is an outward expression of what we hold closest to our hearts. It can be a symbol of self-expression, love, beauty, style, and so much more. At Lotus Fine Jewelers, every piece is custom made. If you can dream it; it can be hand sculpted into reality. If you’ve experienced it; it can shine brightly, as a constant reminder. If you have once loved and lost; a part of it can be with you always. Mr. Andy Chhor, professional jeweler and owner of Lotus Fine Jewelers, is passionate about bringing ideas and feelings to life – pouring them into a tangible, unique, one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. “I became a professional jeweler because I wanted a way to express my ideas and how I see the world. The ideas I have are what inspires the designs that I make. Anything that I see, hear, feel – I can and will make a piece that brings that meaning or moment to life,” Mr. Chhor explained. Mr. Chhor is a Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A) graduate with over two decades of experience in jewelry design. He began his career as a Graduate Jeweler working for Lee Brevard, a designer for Neiman Marcus, in the 90s while also working out of his home, taking custom design jobs from jewelry stores in Los Angeles, CA. In 1996, Mr. Chhor opened his first store in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. Three years later, in 1999, he opened his second store in Rowland Heights, California. “After relocating to San Antonio, I realized that I would eventually want to open another store,” explained Mr. Chhor. “So in 2014, I finally decided it was time.” Lotus Fine Jewelers opened its doors in November of 2015; Mr. Chhor has never taken a backseat in the business. No job is too small and the most intricate detail is never overlooked. “I design and manufacture every piece of jewelry,

February 2016 • Welcome Home • 78258

from start to finish,” explained Mr. Chhor. “And all of our work is done in-house. A piece is never sent out to be completed offsite – from the initial conception of the idea to the finished product.” The design process and overall experience at Lotus is truly unmatched. When a client first walks in the door with an idea or concept for a custom design, Mr. Chhor takes the time to engage him or her, understanding their vision. He then creates a hand sketch of the concept on paper. Next, Mr. Chhor uses a 3D CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) program called Matrix to design the piece on the computer so the client can see, in real time, how he perceives and will potentially design the piece. “It’s an amazing way for the client to watch his or her imagination become reality,” Mr. Chhor explained of the use of this advanced software. “It gives both the client and myself total creative freedom.” At the end of the design process, the client then receives a rendering of exactly what the piece will look like as a tangible, finished product. Mr. Chhor personally guarantees that every detail of the finished piece will match that rendering. Then, the work begins. A professional jeweler must obtain multiple skill sets and a level of expertise in many fields beyond just designing and making a piece of jewelry. For example, every job requires a different tool and it’s inevitable that a jeweler will come across a situation in which he or she must be able to craft their own tool in order to achieve the final product as desired. “Not everything can be bought in the store,” stated Mr. Chhor. “Some things must be made to fit the job at hand, and a professional jeweler must know how to fabricate, by hand, anything that is needed to complete a job.” A high level of experience in such fields as machinery, organic carving and sculpting are all requirements of a professional jeweler and all skills that Mr. Chhor has acquired and mastered over the years. The rapid developments in technology have also changed the

www.welcomehomesa.com

way jewelry is designed, opening even more doors for creativity and wonder. “Pieces that were impossible to craft when I first started working in this industry are now possible with the use of technology,” he explained. Mr. Chhor has designed countless pieces over the years, each with a special significance and no two the same, but his favorite is a ring he named Blue Typhoon. The initial concept was derived from Typhoon Vincente, a powerful storm that struck southern China in 2012. The typhoon caused destruction in the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Laos. The Blue Typhoon ring was conceptualized and designed by Mr. Chhor to memorialize the damage caused by Typhoon Vincente and the lives it affected. The ring features a London Blue Topaz as its center stone weighing 22.90 cts. A total of 1.31 ctw of round brilliant cut diamonds adds to its breathtaking beauty. The ring is also made of Mr. Chhor’s own Palladium 950 alloy. The ring’s total weight sits at 29.8 grams. Mr. Chhor has been able to successfully build upon his natural, innate artistic ability by mastering a variety of fields while never losing sight of the most important aspect of any business – the customer. At Lotus Fine Jewelers, there are only possibilities. No design is too big or too small, too detailed or too vague – Mr. Chhor and his team can make your dream for a stunning, meaningful piece become a reality. At Lotus Fine Jewelers anything is possible.

What Butterflies Can Teach People Special To Welcome Home “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:6

B

utterflies are not just beautiful and radiant they are a force of nature. The Butterfly Effect is a proven phenomenon in the scientific field of Quantum physics that we can learn from. Since we are all connected in the universe, a small event such as a butterfly flapping its wings several weeks before, on a distant continent, can influence the characteristics of a hurricane somewhere else in the world. In other words, small acts can ignite big changes, even at a distance. The Butterfly Effect, by the same token, is relevant to our human lives because it teaches us that we are not helpless. As a matter of fact, how we conduct our own lives can be a global game changer. Therefore, it helps to do more soul-searching. We need to ask, what can I do to help make the world a better place? What can I improve upon in my everyday life? What personal and professional goals do I have? What values do I embrace? Even though there is a growing sense of powerlessness and apathy in the world today, there is hope. Each one of us can make an impact. According to the Butterfly Effect we do not have to do anything monumental. Instead, modifying one thing in our lives can move mountains. Something as simple encouraging others in our families and communities to think critically, become more discerning or move forward can be a huge contribution. Moreover, instead of being consumed by the latest technology it helps to fine tune our human talents and abilities. We need to restore our sense of balance because our modern priorities are out of whack. Look around. You will see more texting than face to face conversations, and as a result the best parts of our humanity are atrophying. For example, we are losing our instincts and compassion. Therefore, if we want a brighter future we need to act. Each of us must do our part,

www.welcomehomesa.com

in whatever way we can, to cultivate the higher side of our human nature. However, this call to action also requires that we interact personally with other people and nature. To do so can be life-changing. For example, talk with a friend, visit a loved one or share something special. Take a stroll together, sing along with a bird or listen to the sounds of the wind. We need to become walking examples of responsible freedom, truth, courage, discipline and love. As the old saying goes, changing the world begins at home. To prevent violence in our society we need strong, wise and dynamic leaders more than ever. We need mentors to encourage each of us to strive for excellence, reach higher and shine brighter. A brilliant light outshines darkness. We must find ways in our day to day activities to bring out the best in ourselves and other people. When we do goodness and mercy have a positive power and path of their very own. Therefore, our mission is simple. Reach out and help others find more joy. When joy goes up, violence and hatred go down. Our focus for years has been to enrich and improve the lives of others, both personally and professionally. In the process, a glorious and colorful butterfly emerges. Dr. Adele von Rust McCormick and Dr. Marlena Deborah McCormick are Ph.D.’s in clinical psychology and mother and daughter. 2015 Fincke Cup Soccer Clinic Fundraiser in Memory of Ian Fincke at Mays YMCA.

Submitted By Stephanie Fincke he 7th annual Ian’s Cup Soccer Clinic will be held on Sunday, February 28th from 2-4PM at the Mays YMCA with registration beginning at 1:30PM (a rain date is still TBD). You can pre-register or sign up to volunteer for the clinic at www. IansCup.com. Deadline to register for the clinic to ensure a 2016 Ian’s Cup T-shirt is Monday, February 15th. T-shirts can be pre-ordered on the website as well through February 15th with mailing options available for delivery. Preregistration will continue until Saturday, February 27th but will not guarantee a t-shirt if registering for the clinic after February 15th. The clinic will run from 2-4PM. The cost for pre-registration is $25 and $30 for walk-ins the day of the clinic. Each participant should bring cleats (or athletic shoes), an age appropriate ball, and a desire to learn and have fun! Ian’s Foundation was formed in memory of Ian Fincke who passed away tragically at the age of 16 as the result of a traumatic brain injury sustained during a skateboarding accident. The foundation was formed to advance the safety and welfare of San Antonio youth through education and scholarship awards. The soccer clinic and game was formerly known as The Fincke Cup, however, the events truly revolve around the memory of Ian, who was the inspiration behind the game and the fundraising efforts. The name has been changed this year to reflect the memory of Ian and to raise money in his honor to give back to the San Antonio community. Ian’s love for the game of soccer inspired the creation of Ian’s Cup, an annual soccer match played between Johnson High School and Reagan High School Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer Teams. The school with the highest aggregate score for the night receives the coveted Ian’s Cup Trophy and bragging rights for the year. A scholarship is awarded to a boy and girl from each team for a total of four scholarships annually. To date over $28,000 in scholarships has been awarded to deserving San Antonio students. The soccer clinic for the youth of San Antonio is the main fundraiser that supports the scholarship awards and allows the local high school soccer players and club coaches an opportunity to teach soccer skills to the youth of San Antonio. The 7th annual Ian’s Cup Soccer Match will be held on Tuesday, March 1st. The boy’s game will begin at 5PM followed by the girl’s game at 7PM with the presentation

of the Ian Cup trophy at the conclusion of the girl’s game. Come out and support the JHS and RHS soccer teams at Blossom Athletic Center in this special memorial tribute to Ian. Ian’s foundation was the inspiration behind bringing wheelchair soccer to San Antonio and continues to support STRAPS (South Texas Regional Adaptive and Paralympic Sports) at Morgan’s Wonderland. Ian’s Foundation also supports the local YMCA by providing scholarships to allow San Antonio youth that could not afford to play soccer the opportunity to play the sport that Ian loved so much. We are looking for donations of gently used soccer equipment to help with this cause. There will be a drop box at the soccer clinic as well as at locations throughout San Antonio. The foundation continues to do helmet safety talks at local schools throughout San Antonio and hope to expand the helmet safety initiative in 2016. Please visit www.IansFoundation.org to find out more or if interested in making a donation/ becoming a sponsor.

Submitted By Kim Garza he Region XII MS Band Auditions were held at Lopez MS on Saturday, November 7th. Schools from all over San Antonio and surrounding areas in Region XII participated in the contest. Students compete against those who play their same instrument, battling against almost as many as one hundred or more in their audition rooms, all to earn a place in the coveted Region Band. When a band student earns a place in this group, it is like making the “All Star Team” in the band world. Lopez MS Band placed forty students into the prestigious Region XII MS Band! This was the highest number by any school in the region and is a tradition of excellence that Lopez Band strives for each year. In addition, out of the forty students that placed, ten students received first place at the audition, making them the very top student of their sections! Five students also received District Band recognition for their high placement. “District” is a recognition that a student receives when they place high enough in the room after the region members, and they are considered an alternate in case someone does not show up to the clinic and concert. Forty-one students that earned a place in the Region Band participated in a clinic and concert with a special guest conductor on Friday and Saturday, December 4th and 5th at Johnson HS. One of our district alternates was called up to join, therefore, making it forty-one that were able to represent Lopez Band and perform. “It was so much fun to watch the best of the best come together and meet the challenge of learning a full program of music so quickly and perform it so well,” said Mrs. Kim Garza, Director of Bands at Lopez Middle School. Both band directors, Ms. Powell and Mrs. Garza also said “We are so proud of our students and the work ethic and dedication they bring to rehearsal each day! We are so excited to see what is to come in the future for these fine young musicians!” Congratulations to the following Lopez MS Band members for their placement into the 2015 Region XII MS Band!

nfortunately, we meet many of our customers on a day that everything seems to be going wrong. An alarm clock was missed, the traffic was worse than usual, or a situation at work went south. And then… the car breaks down. Few of us budget, much less plan, for a vehicle to break down. We are caught unprepared for both the time away from the vehicles we use every day, and for the financial strain of unexpected vehicle repairs. Because Belden’s Automotive and Tires understands that auto repair can be a major

stressor our goal is to create the best possible experience during our customer’s time of need. We understand that there are multiple options when it comes to finding a repair facility, including both local mom-and-pop shops and large fancy dealerships. Belden’s prides itself on being your dealer alternative! Belden’s Automotive & Tires is about relationships. arry Hagendorf, the leading authority on deck and patio care in South Texas, has been cleaning and sealing decks for more than 20 years. Q: Why does my wooden deck look so bad? A: According to Architectural Digest, unprotected wood only lasts for 9-14 years. I

recommend that you clean the wood on your deck and seal it with an oil-based penetrating sealer. Q: What sealer would you recommend? A: My preference, after years of trial and error research, is Barry Premium Blend oilbased penetrating sealer that is designed to look for dry cell structure in the wood. It will penetrate first to the bottom of the cracks, nail holes and knots. Barry’s Premium Blend will protect from the surface down, stabilizing the cell structure of the wood.

Q: Why is my Flagstone flaking & chipping? A: The answer is in the chemistry. When the temperature of Flagstone & rock move toward 32 degrees or freezing it contracts or becomes smaller. When water temperature moves toward 30 degrees it expands or gets bigger. Daily as temperature changes and Flagstone gets wet, the water and stone move against each other causing flaking. The Solution is to seal the stone with Solexene sealer which will keep the stone dry. If you have a salt water pool this problem is greatly multiplied. Q: What care should I give to my Pebblestone? A: On new and older pebblestone, first acid wash the film of concrete off the rocks. Then, oxidize the surface to kill mold and mildew. Last, seal the stone to its natural wet look. Q: Why are the rocks from my pebblestone pool surround sticking to my feet? A: Moisture penetrates around the stones and changing temperatures expand the moisture and wedge the rocks out. To repair, acid wash the surface. Then, oxidize it to kill mold and mildew. Finally, lock the stones in with a clear acrylic sealer. You will also lock in the beautiful natural wet look.

NEISD Automotive Program Receives National Accreditation

Submitted By Daniel Segura fter eighteen months of rigorous work and dedication, the Automotive Technology Academy (ATA) at North East ISD has received accreditation by The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). ATA’s automotive program has been accredited in the following area: Automobile. The program is only the second to earn the accreditation in San Antonio and joins the 2,000 automobile, collision repair & refinish, medium/heavy truck, light/ medium duty compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas programs that are accredited in secondary and post-secondary institutions across the nation. To achieve this coveted recognition, the school’s automotive training program underwent rigorous evaluation by the NATEF. Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as instruction, facilities, and equipment were used. “This is great news for automotiveminded young people and their parents,” said Donald Seyfer, former NATEF Chair. “Because this program increases cooperation between local education and industry leaders, it gives added assurance that ATA’s graduates will be employable entry-level technicians. As a result of the quality education provided by ATA the

ASE is a national non-profit organization which tests and certifies repair technicians, in addition to accrediting automotive training programs. David Bailey, recently retired Director of ATA, added, “During the past few months, we have worked closely with NATEF to make certain that our program would meet strict industry standards, and now we are delighted to join the ranks of the ASE accredited training programs. Students will be assured of a quality education, and shop owners will be assured of getting quality job applicants.”

Should I Medicate My ADHD Child? By Leslie Jernigan, M.A. Learning Foundations Diagnostic and Learning Center 210-495-2626

I

f your child is struggling in school and has difficulty paying attention in class, you have probably heard teachers recommend or at least hint at the possibility of medication for Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). For many teachers, medication seems the ideal solution for a classroom management problem. But is it the best solution for your child? Let’s look at the facts. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 7% of

school aged kids in Texas are taking ADHD medication; twice as much as in 2007. ADHD is typically treated with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta and Vyvanse. It’s funny how the brain is the only organ in the body that is so frequently treated without more formal testing to determine the potential causes for problematic symptoms. Can you imagine a doctor prescribing heart medication based solely on a symptoms checklist? At the very least you’d want

appropriate checks for blood pressure, heart rate, arterial blockage, etc. But many children are prescribed powerful medications on the basis of minimal diagnostic measures. If your child struggles with attention, does that mean she has ADHD? Not necessarily. It is important for parents and teachers to carefully consider whether the attention challenges are causing the learning problem; or if the learning problems are showing up as difficulty paying attention and staying ontask. Children with weak processing skills or retained reflexes may feel over-stimulated by light, sound, or even the fabric of their clothes. This sensory overload can cause them to be excessively wiggly or focused too much on trying to manage the rush of stimuli that they are experiencing in a noisy classroom.

ADHD does exist and for some children appropriate medication is an important piece of an effective treatment plan, but medication should never be the first or only intervention. And while medication can control many of the symptoms, it will not correct a learning problem. And it will certainly not teach your child to read. If you choose to medicate your child, consider coupling it with a 1 on 1 cognitive training program that fits the child’s needs. Leslie Jernigan has a Masters Degree in School Psychology and is Director of Assessment at Learning Foundations Cognitive Training Center. are a bit lower – the “average” days on the market decreased from 68 days in 2014 to 61 days in 2015. Homes priced under $200,000 made up 57.84 percent of the homes sold in November while those priced between $200,000 and $500,000 accounted for 38.21 percent of sales. Homes priced over $500,000 made up 3.89 percent of the homes sold. Of the 813 single family homes sold in November, 2015, just within the city limits of San Antonio, 761 were existing homes while 53 were new construction. The median sales price of an existing home was $158,000, a 4.0 percent year-over-year increase and the median sales price of a new construction home dipped 5.9 percent year-over-year to $189,700. Now is a great time to put your home on

the market! Many people hold off listing their homes over the holidays, and many wait until spring or summer. But we still have buyers looking for homes in San Antonio. With the inventory lower, there is less competition. Across Texas, sales dropped slightly yearover-year with 1.7 percent fewer homes sold in November in the state compared to last November. However, both average and median sales prices reported moderate growth with the average sales price rising 3.9 percent and the median sales price growing 5.9 percent. Grilling As Part of A Healthy Lifestyle

By Cotton Clark Jeff’s Backyard (210) 342-4760 K, this is a serious subject for me. There is a faction of folks out there who appear to be casting dark shadows on grilling and smoking meats, saying that the fat drippings onto an uber-hot fire will cause carcinogens, specifically, the ones called heterocyclic amine (HCA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In the Cotton Patch of Jeff’s Backyard here, there is an official term for such conjecture:

Yet, I prefer the advice of Colleen Doyle, M.S., R.D., director of Nutrition and Physical Activity for the American Cancer Society when she says, “Within the big picture of cancer prevention, there are much greater risks than grilling… If you’re 30 pounds overweight, that puts you at much

However, the doses of HCAs and PAHs used in these studies were very high—equivalent to thousands of times the doses that a person would consume in a normal diet.” Read that again: “thousands of times the doses that a person would consume in a normal diet.” Are you getting the picture? The Girl Scout Cookie Program started more almost 100 years ago when a Girl Scout troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and sold them in its high school cafeteria as a service project in 1917. Many of the girls’ mothers volunteered as technical advisers to teach the girls the fundamentals of cooking in the home kitchen. The Primary Election Is Right Around The Corner, Are You Ready? By Deana Abiassi, Precinct Chair 3121 s the Seasons come and go, so does the Election cycle. This is the season of elections and if you haven’t seen the changes in the political climate, you are not stopping to smell the roses and watch the changes of the leaves, and, frankly, to shake hands with the candidates. Times, they are a changing…and, this is the season of change in the political climate. Ok, enough of the climate change analogy. The Primary election is right around the corner and, as a citizen of the country, it is your responsibility to get informed, involved and to vote. principal, especially presidential, election, and, by definition it is particularly partisan. Each political party selects its’ candidates to run in the General election, so when you step up to vote and show your ID, you will be asked what political party you are affiliated with and you will vote only in that Primary. Each political party lists a “party platform” on their website and that is a good place to start if you are unsure of the political party Primary you would like to vote in. There are important dates and deadlines that you should be aware of in order to participate in this election season and in order to make your experience and those of the poll workers more expedient and enjoyable. The first day to apply for Ballot by Mail was January 1 and the last day is February 19 and the Ballot must be received by March 1. The last day to register to vote is February 1. Voter registration forms are available at the Bexar County Elections office, or you can go to any political party office. Early voting in the Primary is Tuesday, February 16 through Friday, February 26th. The Primary is March 1st. Ballot by Mail forms, early voting locations and Primary day voting precincts, are listed on the Bexar County Elections website. Now is the time to check on your voter status. Are you registered to vote? Have you moved? If so, your precinct has possibly changed and you will need to let the voting officials know. I good point of reference is your voting card. It was recently mailed and the new color is blue, so reference that to confirm that your information is

correct. If you have questions, contact the Bexar County Elections office and they will gladly confirm your information. It is your responsibility to change your address and update your status. If you have a child who has turned 18, encourage them to register. If you have a college student or a family member registered in the county, but has moved away, now is the time to talk to them about this voting cycle. They may either remain registered at their permanent resident and vote in Bexar County if they plan to be in town or they can vote by mail. Or, they can change their address and vote in their new county. The Primary run-off election will be on May 24, 2016, if needed. It is important to note, that the political party you select for the Primary is the political party you will vote in for the run-off, but you may vote in either political party in the General election. s our population continues to age, more Baby Boomers and seniors are finding love in senior living communities. Six residents of Franklin Park® Sonterra, an independent living community in north central San Antonio, have found love and married other residents there, proving that you are never too old to fall in love. Lois Brisco, 85, was one of the first residents at the community when it opened in April 2010. She moved in after her husband passed away. Joseph Brisco, 86, now her husband, came with his first wife to visit Franklin Park. When the furnished model was not available, Lois graciously offered them a tour of her home. One month later they moved in. Unfortunately, Joseph lost his wife unexpectedly in July 2011. “I was living alone for the first time, and one of the really beneficial things here is the social support,” said Lois. “Through the many activities and socials, you make new friends, and Joseph and I got to know each other.” Then, when Lois wanted to go to Oklahoma to visit her sister, Joseph said he was planning a trip to Oklahoma too, and he would be glad to drive them—they were on the road to romance. “The seniors in our community are very active,” said Beth Nixon, director of sales and marketing at Franklin Park® Sonterra. “Activities—from parties and day trips to card games, bingo and dining out--are very popular. Participating in these activities not only fosters new friendships but helps our seniors maintain sharp minds and stay connected with the world around them.” Most seniors don’t expect to be single at this stage in their lives, she explained. “We make it is easy for them to meet new people and find social support and companionship,” she said. Lois, a former nurse, and Joseph, a former supervisor of radiology at two area facilities, found they had a lot in common and were spending all their time together. They were engaged just before Christmas 2011 and married on February 18, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Stone Oak. “We had a big reception in the Franklin Room for family and friends,” she said. The couple is on the Ambassadors Committee, welcoming new residents to Franklin Park and helping them become part of the community. “Everyone here calls us the ‘lovebirds,’” she said. Lou Baker, 82 moved to Franklin Park in 2011 after her husband of 28 years passed away. “I was so lonely and I was praying

to God to help me, and Lee walked in. He is the best thing that has ever happened to me.” She also credits the ongoing social activities there with helping her and Lou get to know each other. Lou, a very successful residential real estate broker in earlier years, also researched Lee on Google to get background information on him. “We started doing everything together, from happy hour to traveling,” she said. “He is so much fun.” “We just hit it off,” said Lee, who was a pilot in two wars and retired as a full colonel. “As you go through life, it’s good to have a copilot.” On May 4, 2012 they were married in the chapel at Franklin Park with a reception, attended by family and residents, in the Franklin Room. Lou has advice for other seniors. “If you see somebody you like, don’t stand back and wait for him to make the first move,” she said. “It’s 2016, not 1916!” Bonnie Krueger, 75, was the sixth resident to move into the community when it opened in spring 2010. Sadly, her husband of more than 50 years, passed away only 3 months after the move. Donald “Buzz” Buzzard become a resident in November 2010, and in December of that year lost his wife of 60 years to complications from a medical procedure. “We met and became friends,” said Bonnie. “We both like to laugh and joke, we’re outgoing and we love people.” Nixon said that at the community Bonnie and Buzz, as they are known, are usually the life of the party and also a most glamourous couple with their good looks and their fashion statement of dressing in the same color. Bonnie said that neither of them was looking for love. He was concerned because he was 10 years older. Finally, Buzz told her he loved her and wanted to marry her. “Everything just fell into place,” she said. “When we went downtown to get our marriage license, the judge waived the 72-hour waiting period and the clerk directed us to a chaplain who married us downtown in a one-room chapel.” That was on August 6, 2013. In San Antonio, Franklin Park Senior Living owns and operates Franklin Park Sonterra, an Independent and Assisted Living community, and Franklin Park TPC offering Assisted Living and Memory Care with Independent Living facilities under construction. Bush Bulldogs Enjoy Holiday Book Fair Submitted By Deborah Deel n December the Bush Middle School Book Fair kicked off with a “Home for the Holidays” theme. The library was transformed into an inviting holiday destination with twinkling lights, snowcovered deer (reindeer?), garland, and a roaring fire on the Smartboard. A seating area was provided at the “hearth” for tired shoppers to take a break from shopping and enjoy the decorations and the sounds of the season playing throughout the library. First up, teachers were invited in for coffee, hot chocolate with whipped crème

I

and candy canes, and cookies on Friday, December 4th. They had a chance to do some early shopping while filling out wish lists for their classroom library to inspire students and parents looking for teacher gifts. Monday, December 7th the Holiday Book Fair was open for all shoppers to enjoy. Students and their parents were invited in to shop in the warmth of the holiday décor. A late shopping night occurred on Tuesday, December 8th to coincide with the Band’s holiday concert. An added bonus that night was a cup

of hot chocolate with any purchase. There was also a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog who posed with students, parents, and even Bulldog administrators. The Book Fair continued through Friday, December 11th but the decorations and fire stayed up for everyone to enjoy until students left for the long holiday break. Bush Middle School will have another Book Fair in May. From May 18-25, with late night shopping May 19th, students will get to enjoy the “Feeling Groovy” theme with all the tie-dye, hippies, and lava lamps necessary to attain that cool 60s/70s vibe.

The Holiday Book Fair was open for all shoppers to enjoy. Students and their parents were invited in to shop in the warmth of the holiday décor.

Students Benefit From SMART Boards Special To Welcome Home SMART board is an endless white board,” said Director of Instructional Technology James Baldoni, “It is a great way to get students out of their seats, and make learning interactive.” Now every North East ISD facility has access to this innovative technology as a result of the 2011 Bond Project’s Chalkboard Replacement Program. What started in 2009 as a test run in a few math and science classrooms, has since evolved into a standard feature in all NEISD facilities. The program replaced all existing classroom chalkboards with two dry-erase

“A

marker white boards on the sides of a SMART Board. This layout allows students to not only enjoy learning with interactive technology, but also allows students to comfortably use the familiar white boards. Of the 46 District facilities included in this project, there were a total of 1854 chalkboards to be replaced. A number of these chalkboards were already covered with a dry-erase white board, however in the interest of comfort for asthmatic students, the District saw to it that the chalkboards were done away with completely. The project also included a change in projectors for the SMART boards. Most

classrooms had long throw projectors, which when used with the SMART board, created shadows that covered the screen. For example, a “regular” projector with a 1.5:1 throw ration would have to be 7.5 feet back to project a 60-inch wide image. A short throw projector with a throw ratio of 0.6:1 can project the same image when placed less than three feet away from the screen. All NEISD classrooms are benefiting from short throw projectors that offer full view of the screens without risks of creating shadows while using the board.

Fourth grade students utilize the SMART Board to work together on a problem solving question.

Reagan Band Sets NEISD Record Submitted By Daniel Segura n Jan. 9, ten members of the Reagan High School Band earned placement in the Texas All-State band. This was the most out of any school attending the Area E Contest, the most in the history of the Reagan Band, and the most in the history of any school in North East ISD. The area audition was held at the University of Texas’ Butler School of Music, and students competed against schools as far east as Houston in the final round of the Texas Music Educator Association’s (TMEA) All-State Competition. This is the highest individual honor a high school musician can achieve in the state.

2016 TMEA All-State Band Members: Steven Rios-Piccolo, Senior Phillip Leclair-Bb Clarinet, Sophomore Chris Kinnally-Bass Clarinet, Senior Bryant Anderson-Tenor Saxophone, Senior Ethan Swallows-Trumpet, Senior Kurt Lautenshlager-French Horn, Sophomore Eric Bassett-French Horn, Senior Pablo Espinosa-Tenor Trombone, Junior Alec Wyatt-Tenor Trombone, Junior Evan Arnold-Tuba, Junior Approximately 64,000 students from 28 regions compete annually for this distinction.

Individual musicians perform three separate pieces of instrumental literature for a panel of professional judges, who then rank each competitor based on their performance. The competitive rounds include auditions at the district, region, and area levels whereby the strongest performers earn the All-State distinction. These students will attend a four-day music clinic and convention in February where they will get to work with and perform for some of the best collegiate and professional musicians in the world. 9th Annual On And Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour

Submitted By Emily Boyce rtist Kathleen Trenchard, who has lived in the Woodlawn Lake community for five years, has seen her neighborhood slowly evolve, which she partly attributes to the annual On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour that offers great exposure to the area, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods. Visitors can discover for themselves what makes the communities along Fredericksburg Road charming and quaint. “People come to the neighborhoods and once they visit the homes and studios, this area gets a good reputation as a nice place to live,” she said. Trenchard is one of more than 70 artists, who will display their works during the 9th annual On and Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, and noon to 5 pm Sunday, Feb. 21 in San Antonio’s historic Deco District. “Fred,” as the event is known, is a selfguided tour of private homes, art studios and galleries of more than 70 artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers and metal smiths. In addition, more than 200 musicians, poets, and theater and dance groups help make this community event one of the most diverse studio tours in the nation.

Last year, more than 2,500 locals and visitors walked, biked and drove up and down a 5-mile stretch of Fredericksburg Road to get a first-hand look at the artists working in their studios and to purchase their art, said Kellen McIntyre, executive director of Bihl Haus Arts, which presents the Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour each year. “It’s the only time of the year these art studios are open in such large numbers in one weekend,” McIntyre said. “You can come with friends and plan on having brunch or a snack at one of the nearby restaurants when you’re ready to take a break, or pack a picnic lunch. You’ll get to see how artists live and work, and purchase or commission work directly from the artists.” Attendees can purchase either the hardcopy color catalog consisting of a map to help people plan their route, artist bios and an image of their work, or the online catalog for $10. For more information, visit www.OnandOffFred.org or call Bihl Haus Arts at (210) 383-9723.

Living Through Giving

“You make a living by what you get; you make a life by what you give.” Unknown “Our mission is to bring hope to families in the San Antonio community by reaching out and touching the hearts of our future. Our intent is to provide children with hope and friendship while trying to ensure that they have the tools necessary to become the future.” By protecting the hopes and dreams of children, it is LTG’s desire to allow children to see kindness and have hope during a time where both may be hard to find. The core of our passion is the belief that when children become part of ‘the system’ they become our collective responsibility – our children – and deserve the same opportunities that youth from healthy families have.

Stone Oak Elementary School Choir Performs Submitted By Deborah Deel ecember was a busy month for the Stone Oak Elementary School Choir. Their first performance was at the Stone Oak Winter Celebration on December 5th. The students sang a beautiful, and sometimes funny, collection of seasonal songs for family and event attendees. After their performance the students enjoyed food and rides at the Festival. Especially popular for our Bobcats used to warm winters were snowball fights and sledding on the snow brought in to add some winter to the Winter Celebration. The choir continued their holiday performances the following week. First up was a visit to The Laurels Retirement

D

Community right next door to the school. Students entertained their neighbors shortly after school let out that Thursday and spent a few minutes after the singing greeting the audience. Friday the choir headed to Barnes & Nobles for a performance in conjunction with a “Bookfair” event. Before and after their performance part of the proceeds from purchases made by Bobcat family and friends were donated to the Stone Oak Elementary School Choir. The last week before the holiday break culminated the choir season with a choir party on Thursday, December 17th. The choir then gave one last performance for their classmates, teachers, and family Friday morning at the annual Stone Oak

Elementary School Holiday Sing-Along. Coming up in February students have an Author Visit from Jason Chin on February 3rd to look forward to. Class pictures will be taken on February 10th with club pictures taken on the 11th. Friday, February 12th, will be an early dismissal day with the following Monday, February 15th, being a student holiday. The month rounds out with two more early dismissal days on February 23rd and February 24th.

NEISD Students’ Musical Prowess On Full Display Special To Welcome Home arning a chair in a TMEA All-State Ensemble is the highest honor a Texas music student can attain. Beginning in the Fall of 2015, more than 60,000 students from around the state of Texas began the audition process. Out of this large number, only 1700 students will be named to one of the TMEA All-State Ensembles. In the Summer of 2015, many North East ISD students participated in All-State camps at various universities throughout the state in which a great number of directors serve as section leaders and clinicians. With the beginning of the Fall semester, dedicated directors and students begin a seemingly endless number of before and after school sectionals and rehearsals. This hard work has certainly paid off. This year, NEISD is honored to have 46 NEISD Band, Choir, and Orchestra students who have earned a chair in one of the 15 TMEA All-State Ensembles. Band: 21 Students 10 – Ronald Reagan High School 7 – Claudia Taylor Johnson High School 4 – Winston Churchill High School Choir: 17 Students 11 – Ronald Reagan High School 4 – Claudia Taylor Johnson High School 1 – Winston Churchill High School

E

1 – Douglas MacArthur High School Orchestra: 8 Students 4 – Claudia Taylor Johnson High School 2 – Winston Churchill High School 2 – Douglas MacArthur High School The success of the District’s music students is due, primarily, to the hard work and dedication of NEISD Music Educators and the strong programs they provide. NEISD’s directors inspire students to achieve greatness through hard work and dedication. The educational environment created in the District’s music programs promotes teamwork and allows students to take risks which leads them to achieve more than they may have thought possible. Simply stated, NEISD music programs are very strong and will continue to do whatever necessary to ensure student success. NEISD students will experience three days of intense rehearsal with nationally recognized conductors followed by a concert in which thousands will attend. Not only will this experience provide students with new friends and memories which will last a lifetime, but will add greatly to their college resume and may result in scholarship opportunities. Congratulations to these very talented young musicians and their directors.

Melissa Seitze’s 3rd grade class sent letters to Safyre!

Submitted By Melissa Seitze elissa Seitze, a 3rd grade teacher at Wilderness Oak Elementary School, read about a little girl named Safyre in New York who survived a horrible fire in her home. She was the only member of her family that survived and she suffered massive injuries to her body and has had to have almost 50 surgeries since then to stay alive. Safyre’s wish this past Christmas was to get Christmas cards from her friends. This wish has gone viral and Mrs. Seitze told her class about it and they wanted to send

M

her Christmas cards too. So, they made cards to send to Safyre! Their hope that Safyre would have the best Christmas she could and that they helped to make it a little brighter. “I know it made our holiday a little brighter for the kids in my room and myself,” said Melissa. “Showing compassion to others, being kind, and giving is what the season is all about and what we want our children to learn to do all year round. My class was so sweet, they did this with such excitement and joy for her.”

Reagan Class Officers Go Above And Beyond Submitted By Haylee Hering hroughout the course of the 20152016 academic school year, the Senior Class Officers of Ronald Reagan High School have been planning various class-bonding activities, ranging from such traditional events as “Pie Day,” a day on which all seniors attending Ronald Reagan High School enjoy a slice of pie, to a campus-wide game of “hide-andseek,” featuring a larger than life cardboard cutout of the school’s namesake, President Reagan. However, working behind the curtains are the two Senior Class Sponsors, Shawn Jensen and Loren Spencer. These two teachers volunteer their time to guide the class officers, arriving to school early and staying after hours to work with the students to plan activities. The two are role models for the leaders-in-training; both Jensen and Spencer set examples of what exemplifies an effective leader: passion,

T

dedication, and communication. However, the sponsors do not simply monitor the officers; they take active roles in planning alongside the officers; countless ideas have been pitched by the sponsors themselves. Although Mr. Spencer and Mr. Jensen may not receive as much recognition as the Class Officers of 2016, their contributions and support are integral to the success of the organization. Thank you for everything you do!

Tuscany Heights & Vineyard Ranch Named LIM Lighthouse Schools

Tuscany’s Junior Lighthouse Team Emma Avina, Avery Schammel, Marcus Bissen, and Addison James.

Submitted By Daniel Segura uscany Heights and Vineyard Ranch Elementary School announced that they have been named as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by Franklin Covey Co. This recognition comes because the schools have achieved outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing The Leader in Me process with fidelity. It is also because of the extraordinary impact the schools are having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community. Vineyard Ranch and Tuscany Heights are the 167th and 168th schools respectively to earn Lighthouse status internationally. “It seems cliché to say they all have–but we have truly seen our progress with all of our students,” said Tara Bailey, Principal at Tuscany Heights. “We have seen students that had multiple discipline referrals one year,

T

to this year receiving none because of finding the perfect job role for them to lead others. We have a student that is nonverbal but can’t wait to update his Leadership Notebook daily and even served as a student presenter when the Covey Review Committee visited our campus. It goes to show that the message is evident in all of our classrooms and all students are encouraged to be part of the leadership in some way.” “Earning the Lighthouse milestone has been challenging and extremely rewarding,” said Tamara Van Cleave, Principal at Vineyard Ranch. “We worked toward our goal steadily while learning throughout the whole process. We are excited about seeing more student success and sharing our journey with others in years to come. The faculty and staff, parents and students have set the pace and their own goals during the

Vineyard Ranch teachers reflect on the journey at the Lighthouse announcement.

process. It has been inspiring to me as I have witnessed their dedication, perseverance, and genuine participation in what together we have built to be a structure for continued lifelong leadership development.” Through this journey, the Tuscany Heights staff and students have increased their organizational health as a campus and grown closer as a working family for the benefit of the students and their growth. Together they pinpoint areas that need improvement for the campus and write “smartgoals.” Then, the grade levels, classrooms, and individual students wrote goals that would lead to improving the school-wide goals. This year, the campus wanted their attendance to increase and they recently celebrated a school wide 98% for the first semester. As part of the process, Vineyard Ranch set campus goals that focused on student learning and success. Attendance, homework completion, implementation of leadership tools, and learning with technology have been past and present goals tracked through data which have increased since opening in 2012. In addition, students have developed a love for giving back to the community. For instance, one student shared an idea with her class of writing encouraging notes to patients in hospitals enclosed in a pocket within a homemade pillow. Two classes incorporated the idea one year and the next year it became a grade level project. The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model—developed in partnership with educators—that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. It is based on secular principles and practices of personal, interpersonal, and organizational effectiveness. The Lighthouse Milestone is a highly regarded standard set by Franklin Covey that is attainable by every The Leader in Me school. The attainment of the Lighthouse Milestone represents a significant benchmark, and it is evidence that a high standard has been met by a school. Applying for the Lighthouse Milestone typically occurs three to five years after a school begins The Leader in Me process. Sean Covey, Education Practice Leader, Franklin Covey, said, “We are thrilled to recognize Tuscany Heights and Vineyard Ranch as Leader in Me Lighthouse Schools. The schools who achieve the Lighthouse Milestone are great examples of a strong leadership model, process, and of what it means to be a Leader in Me school. These schools have experienced transformational results by implementing the principles and practices related to The Leader in Me. We

www.welcomehomesa.com

are so pleased to celebrate the success they are both experiencing.” Becoming a Lighthouse School is a recognition that schools earn because they have produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing The Leader in Me process with fidelity. More than 100 schools have achieved this prestigious milestone. The designation is given to schools that have demonstrated the following: The school campus environment reinforces the leadership model by displaying leadership language that emphasizes individual worth and potential in hallways and classrooms. Teachers integrate leadership language into school curriculum and instruction. Staff collaborates and works together to effectively build a culture of leadership. Students are provided with meaningful student leadership roles and responsibilities, such as mentor, public speaker, school tour guide, and greeter. Parents are given opportunities to learn The Leader in Me model and the 7 Habits and are involved in activities that support the leadership model. A system is in place for setting and tracking school-wide, classroom, academic, and personal goals. Leadership events are held to allow students to practice their leadership skills (e.g. public speaking, sharing data, confident greetings, etc.) with community business partners, parents, and other educators. The school leadership team meets regularly and oversees school-wide implementation of the leadership model with the help of students, staff, parents, and community members. Measureable improvements in teacher engagement, parent satisfaction, student behavior, and academic alignment are shown by comparing baseline data with the tracking of ongoing data. Leader in Me schools, which have implemented the process with fidelity, report increases in the following: student self-confidence, teamwork, initiative, responsibility, creativity, self-direction, leadership, problem-solving and communication for children of all ages, socio-economic levels, learning capacities and cultural backgrounds. Currently, 38 NEISD schools are implementing the Leader in Me program at their campuses. The addition of Tuscany Heights and Vineyard Ranch brings the NEISD Lighthouse status total to ten elementary schools.
