Santa, Snow, Sled Rides and More! Dec 5, 2015 10 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at North Central Baptist Hospital

ear Neighbors, Winter Celebration featuring AirLife Santa is here! Make sure to come out to North Central Baptist Hospital for an amazing time. This is the seventh year Welcome Home and North Central Baptist Hospital are teaming up to bring the community two Stone Oak traditions: the Winter Celebration and AirLIFE Santa. The event will be held together as one celebation on December 5, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Winter Celebration always kicks off with a mini-parade highlighting the schools in our local neighborhoods. This year the Reagan High School Marching Band along with the Alamo City Marching Band will be featured in our parade. This is a great opportunity to come out and see these bands in action. The parade will also feature school mascots, spirit organizations and children’s groups . I have even been told Anna and Elsa from the Disney movie Frozen will be in our parade and they will stick around for photos during the event. We will be lining up for the parade at 9:45 a.m. on Reindeer Lane. There will be plenty of volunteers to direct you and you can visit our website for more details as they are listed. Join us for this wintry thrill! Of course, Santa is always the main attraction. He will arrive by AirLife helicopter at 10:30 a.m. after the mini parade. In exchange for your donation of a new, unwrapped toy, you or your child will receive a FREE photo with Santa, a FREE slide ride and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a general prize drawing. There will be mini-carnival rides, games, food and local entertainment from many of our NISD, NEISD and Comal ISD schools!

On The Cover By Stefanie Young any coffee drinkers can relate to the commercial drivethru scene with its overpriced and over-complicated drink orders, especially when on the go. Yet, here in the heart of Stone Oak there’s a café that knows people crave that moment to themselves, where they can experience the refreshing setting with a deep breath and freshly brewed beverage made to their liking. Let’s define “Made to Their Liking”. At Punta Del Cielo, they’re not about the ‘with or without whipped cream’ setting. They break the unique coffee experience down to the bean itself, considering the soil and elevation at which they grow and how it will affect the taste of the coffee. “We have this high quality coffee in Mexico that many of the locals don’t even know about,” said Manuel Saidi, Co-Owner of the cafe. “We wanted to bring over ‘el

ords just don’t mean the same thing anymore. It gets quite confusing. My students say “Hey, dog!” and “You’re bad!” and then assure me I have been complimented. “Cool” things are now “hot” and it’s hard to keep up with it all! I thought this just happens in the teen world. Surely this phenomenon is not proliferated throughout society at large! However, recently, I found myself taking all things “yikes!” and “no thanks” on The After Christmas Great Return trek. While standing in a line (that could not have been longer had Elvis himself been found alive and well, and working behind the counter) I hear, “May I help the next GUEST please?” GUEST? I’m a GUEST? Hmmm…when you have a GUEST in your home, does

the GUEST bathroom have a dirty diaper clogging the toilet? Does it have toilet paper strewn about so that no matter what you do, like some magnetic science project gone awry, it will cling unbeknownst to your GUEST to be paraded around in public? Does it have a big sign on the back of the doors that says if your GUEST shoplifts, they will be hunted, tortured AND they will tell mom!? Do you get rid of the towels and hang a giant blow dryer on the wall? Do you have conversations like this with your GUESTS: “May I help you, ma’am?” “This vase is broken.” “How did it break, ma’am?” “I don’t know. I just took it out of the box and it was broken.” “Oh.-----You took it out of the box, ma’am?” “Well, yes. Yes I did” (feeling strangely guilty). “I’m sorry ma’am, but if you break the hermetically sealed box, that voids the warranty. Here is an 800 number if you have any more questions and, oh, thank you for shopping with us. Next GUEST please!” Why not just say, “May I help the next naïve person who is hoping I can solve their problem when I just want to take my break?” Doesn’t sound as nice but at least this GUEST won’t be expecting tea and pastries served on the good china, right? Words have changed, folks. Better take your teen with you so you know if you are “down with that,” if something is “beast” or how to reply to a sincere, “Sup, Dawg?” Debby (who is taking New English classes) can be reached at writewell62@ yahoo.com

All cars must be clear of the parking lots by 4 p.m. Winter Celebration featuring AirLIFE Santa is a wonderful family event for all ages. The celebration begins with an opening parade showcasing performances from school choirs and area high school marching bands. The event itself includes photos with Santa, raffles for prizes, vendors as well as other activities to create endless fun for families and volunteers. Santa’s arrival by helicopter always brings excitement from the crowd, and of course, the celebration would not be complete without 60,000 lbs. of snow for snowball fights and snow angels! Over the past thirteen years, Winter Celebration has become the largest Christmas toy drive in Stone Oak, San Antonio. Welcome Home would like to thank all shuttle service providers for assisting in transportation and ensuring that everyone in the community can attend the celebration. If you have any questions or would like more information regarding Winter Celebration, call (210) 348-8233. Welcome Home looks forward to celebrating the holiday season with the entire community!

Taking Wellness To New Heights

By Stefanie Young

W

ith a total of 130 currently open retreats in the United States and Canada, and an additional 7 expected to be open by the end of the year, business is booming for Massage Heights! Founders Wayne and Shane Evans opened the first Massage Heights location in Alamo Heights in 2004 and things took off from there. Soon people from across the country were requesting a Massage Heights in their city or state. The Evans’ decided in 2007 to expand their business, becoming a national franchisor of the membership based massage concept. The name “Massage Heights” evolved from their initial location and the Evans quickly grew the business to embrace the entire concept of affordable, therapeutic services in a spa-like setting. Their retreats are the calming answer to the hectic lifestyle. At Massage Heights, they feel massage and skin therapy should not be labeled a luxury but instead as a regular part of healthy living that everyone should be able to afford. “The benefit at the top of my list of massage therapy is its ability to ease stress...the number one health concern that leads to other diseases and disorders. When your body’s sympathetic nervous system is constantly in flight or fight mode it pulls circulation away from extremely important systems of the body and can cause major imbalances. Massage allows the body’s parasympathetic nervous system to kick in and begin to relax and repair response our bodies so desperately need to engage. Throw in increased circulation, ease of pain, enhanced range of motion, reduction of scar tissue, increased athletic performance, not to mention other neurohormonal effects of massage therapy (see ya cortisol, hello dopamine, serotonin, & oxytocin),” said Daniel Jaramillo, LMT Director of Industry Relations and Development. But their success doesn’t only stem from their mindset or mission. “We have a phenomenal staff,” Wayne explained. “Who will greet you with a smile, know your name and genuinely try to help you relieve your stresses, aches, and pains the moment you walk through the door.” And that’s just the beginning. While the front desk staffs across this city are a true example of southern hospitality, the massage and skin therapist who work to help you feel better are just as concerned about your health and wellbeing. They are dedicated to helping people relieve stress and pain, relax, and experience the innumerable health benefits related to regular massage and skin therapy services. “Massage Heights is truly a family. Our dedication to each other and our guests is what sets us apart,” said Katherine Palmer, Director of Industry Relations and Development for Skin Therapy. “As a member of the Massage Heights team, I am a part of something bigger. We share our successes as one. We grow and celebrate

December 2015 • Welcome Home • 78258

helping our clients live happier, healthier, elevated lives together. Every time one of us helps a client, we all share a part in that healing.” Once a client chooses a massage or facial, the therapists will discuss their treatment goals and personalize a massage or facial service just for them, they can close their eyes and relax on the soft, thickly padded hydraulic massage tables equipped with heating pads for warmth and the most comfortable linens one could possibly be enveloped within. Massage can help release the stress of the day to day and allow the guest to unwind. A peaceful and comfortable environment with soft overhead music enhances the massage experience, as well as, their therapeutic aromatherapy. Massage Heights has their own all-natural proprietary aromatherapy blends which contain no artificial fragrances or colors, no parabens chemical additive or synthetic fillers and is available in Relax, Breathe, Energize and Revive. Green initiatives are taken to benefit the massage therapists, members and the earth. Biodegradable, natural lotions, essential oils, and earth-friendly retail products are just some of the initiatives taken at each Retreat to help protect the environment. For added relaxation, guest can “elevate” their services by adding hot stone therapy, a reviving foot scrub, or a hot towel, cold stone face massage to their monthly massage. If members prefer more than one massage a month, they are provided at a discounted rate. Members can schedule as many custom treatments as they like and pay the discounted rate each time. Not unlike massage therapy, skin therapy offers a variety of health benefits. It increases circulation, reverses the signs of aging, hydrates, relaxes the senses, nerves and muscle and removes environmental impurities. . Massage Heights is proud to partner with Dermalogica, known worldwide as an innovator in skincare, to provide custom skin treatments that deliver their guest’s best skin health. Massage Heights’ Skin Therapists will analyze your skin by performing an inch by inch, methodical analysis of your face, neck and décolleté insuring your professional treatment and custom home care prescription which will deliver results that lead to your healthy skin. It’s a unique and targeting experience everyone should try at least once. “Regular massage provides so many health benefits,” said Wayne. “People are beginning to make it a routine for stress relief and actual pain care. Physicians are even prescribing massages for pain remedy. It feels good to be able to offer such a great service at a price point that more people can take advantage of, regularly helping them to feel better more often.” With 9 locations in town, this family-oriented franchise is available to help you through your busy, stressful lifestyle to make it easier for you to breathe. They truly have a positive mindset and it shows in the way they

We share a passion to help others, we are loyal to our guests, we are authentic professionals with the diligence to develop our knowledge and art of massage therapy.” – Daniel Jaramillo Dir. of Industry Relations & Development interact with their guest “We share a passion to help heal others, we are loyal to our guests, we are authentic professionals with the diligence to develop our knowledge and art of massage therapy,” said Daniel Jaramillo, LMT Director of Industry Relations and Development. The Massage Heights team finds it rewarding to educate our guests on the outcome of the treatments and the benefits of regular massage and skin therapy treatments. It has helped them become a leader in the industry and helped them grow as a business. “Work-life balance is something everybody struggles with, yet it’s important for everyone to achieve. We’re evolving and expanding…but not too quickly,” explained Wayne. “We have a commitment to our brand, our people, and our guests alike. We’re also committed to our community and environment through the product and business choices we make.” Massage Heights is unique not only because of the membership based-services, but also due to an unwavering focus on a completely rewarding and satisfying experience. Guests and members are encouraged to communicate with their massage therapist what they seek to benefit from their massage. The therapists can provide general relaxation or stress reduction treatments, or a more focused session for a localized injury, pain or tightness. The main ingredient that has fueled their success has never changed; Massage Heights remains a true family business, built on the values that guide both Shane and Wayne in their lives. They have never strayed from their vision of providing affordable, convenient and professional massage services in an upscale environment. The membership based model helps make massages more affordable and accessible while still providing a high level of service. Everyone deserves to feel their best. Massage Heights is dedicated to helping people live their lives better through improved health. For the most convenient Massage Heights retreat or for franchising information. Hormones: Precisely Prescribed Produce Powerful Results

By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 rue stories: (1) a woman told me she had been instructed to rub in about ½ tsp. of over the counter progesterone cream each day for relief of hot flashes. (2) Another patient came to me saying she had been told to apply a man’s prescription testosterone gel, “a little dab,” to see if that would help with her lack of libido. She had done that, but wondered if it was too much or too little. In the first example, progesterone cream is not well absorbed, thus blood levels remain less than optimal. Progesterone is

the one sex hormone that is best prescribed orally or intravaginally. Progesterone acts on the brain to affect calmness, on the breast and uterus to down regulate estrogen. (YES, even if you had a hysterectomy, you do need progesterone if you want to be calm, sleep through the night and not bloat.) The pharmaceutical industry does not make a specific testosterone product for women, so some doctors just “off label” prescribe the male prescription to a woman, telling her to use just a little. wanted to include a personal message for the community for the holidays and I found this information from last holiday season online from Brilliantbusinessmoms. com. “When You Support Small Business You Support: Innovation: Small businesses focus on solving problems and creating products that aren’t always driven by popular trends or sales forecasts. There are so many unique

products created by makers and artisans every day – individuals who are set on making the world a better place. Opportunity: On a recent episode of Shark Tank, Daymond John said, “Being an entrepreneur is the ultimate equalizer.” There is opportunity for everyone when it comes to innovation, hustling and getting your products into stores and the hands of customers. Being an entrepreneur is hard, grueling work. It’s that way for everyone. The playing field is equal and it’s all about the level of determination and work that you bring to the equation.

Permanent, as in forever and ever, masculinizing effects could occur after months of this use, such as facial hair, deepening of the voice and cystic acne. We women need testosterone, but not the same as a man. Just the right amount improves mood, libido and physical endurance. For women, a compounded testosterone cream, made by a certified compounding pharmacist with special training, must be applied using a syringe or a metered dose application for accurate dosage. Men need testosterone blood levels, too. A gentleman came to me after months

of applying a prescription testosterone gel without much benefit. His blood level revealed a low, but “normal for age” amount. He could not recall ever having seen his testosterone level. I give every patient all of their labs with three pages of line-by-line written explanation. I explained to him the incredible benefits of optimizing his testosterone level. I prescribed a potent, compounded, testosterone cream, which he applied twice daily. He loved it, felt great with the testosterone level of a young adult. Hormones must be precisely measured, monitored, and prescribed to achieve their full powerful benefits. Blood work guides therapy for women and men. Donna Becker, D.O., Board Certified Physician. Families: When you buy from a small business, often you’re supporting a family. You’re the reason a mom is able to be at home with her children, or that a family is able to pay their mortgage or send children to college. You’re supporting individuals with a high level of ethics, who treat their employees like family. The US Economy: Many small businesses have products that are handmade by their owners right here in the U.S. Rather than buy plastic junk from China and factories where the working conditions are unknown, you can support quality products, eco-friendly materials, and families paying their workers fair wages. Paying it forward: Small businesses give back. Research indicates that over 90 percent of small business owners contribute to their communities through volunteering,

in-kind contributions, and cash donations. When you support small businesses, you’re helping to pay it forward.” All of these things describe what we do each and every day at Stone Oak Vision Source. We are not a mass produced big box option for the cheapest thing from China. We strive to only sell quality and we stand behind our products. Our patients and customers are the number one reason we are here. We want to give you and your family personalized service from the moment you step into our office. Please call today to schedule your holiday appointment. This is one of the busiest times of the year for us and we want to make sure you take advantage of your insurance and HSA benefits before they renew in January. Winter Precautions For Your Vehicle By Rusty Belden, President Belden’s Automotive & Tires (210) 494-0017

inter is here and although your first instinct is to wrap up in a warm blanket by the fire, you really should be thinking about maintaining your vehicle while the cold weather is upon us. Without the heating systems in today’s modern vehicles, we would all be miserable driving to our destinations. We take for granted the heat in our vehicle that keeps us warm in the winter months. Without proper protection and maintenance our vehicles would not be able to protect us from that cold weather. Here are some important facts to keep in mind:

Of the upmost importance in the winter months is your radiator. It helps the engine stay at proper temperature, regardless of the temperature outside. Always make sure your vehicles coolant is filled properly, if not it can cause your engine to freeze during the worst of dipping temperatures. Vehicle batteries can have trouble starting during extreme temperatures. Check the batteries terminals to make sure there is no rust or corrosion. If you have an older battery and the temperatures are dipping, get your battery tested and replace it if it is

arry Hagendorf, the leading authority on deck and patio care in South Texas, has been cleaning and sealing decks for more than 20 years. Q: Why does my wooden deck look so bad?

A: According to Architectural Digest, unprotected wood only lasts for 9-14 years. I recommend that you clean the wood on your deck and seal it with an oil-based penetrating sealer. Q: What sealer would you recommend?

not in good working order. As temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, so does the air pressure in your tires. Especially in cold months, tires tend to lose more air than in winter months. Check your tires during the first cold snap and make sure they are in range suggested by the manufacturer. This ensures that your tires always make good contact with the road surface and helps ward off uneven wear. Don’t forget to make time for your vehicle during this winter. Besides all of the tips mentioned above, don’t forget your windshield wipers! It is important to replace worn wiper blades regularly to maintain good visibility when necessary. Proper maintenance can help insure you and your vehicle don’t get caught out in the cold. You can always call Belden’s Automotive & Tires, our family is here to help! A: My preference, after years of trial and error research, is Barry Premium Blend oilbased penetrating sealer that is designed to look for dry cell structure in the wood. It will penetrate first to the bottom of the cracks, nail holes, and knots. Barry’s Premium Blend will protect from the surface down, stabilizing the cell structure of the wood. Q: What care should I give to my pebblestone? A: On new and older pebblestone, first acid wash the film of concrete off the rocks. Then, oxidize the surface to kill mold and mildew. Last, seal the stone to its natural wet look.

Belden’s Automotive & Tires has Six Locations: San Pedro: 210-494-0017; Medical Center: 210-690-1100; Alamo Garage: 210-366-1122; Boerne: 830981-9700; Bulverde Rd.: 210-481-3330; Prue Rd.: 210-877-2929. For more information, call one of the locations or visit www.beldensautomotive.com Q: Why are the rocks from my pebblestone pool surround sticking to my feet? A: Moisture penetrates around the stones and changing temperatures expand the moisture and wedge the rocks out. To repair, acid wash the surface. Then, oxydize it to kill mold and mildew. Finally, lock the stones in with a clear acrylic sealer. You will also lock in the beautiful natural wet look. The Feast Of The Seven Fishes

By Blake Groomer Groomer’s Seafood (210) 377-0951 t’s the most wonderful time of the year. Families come together, presents are given, and best of all good food is enjoyed between people who love each other. One of the most famous Christmas traditions with seafood is known as the Feast of The Seven Fishes. While the number doesn’t always have to be 7, the main point of this Italian tradition is a big feast on delicious seafood of all types. Want to try this out for you and

Grilling Pies At Christmastime

By Cotton Clark Jeff’s Backyard (210) 342-4760 t’s that special time of year where we say “Adios, Jenny Craig” and “Hello Christmas calories!” I especially love pies this time of year, and I also love to grill. So, BAM! Why not marry the two together?! OK, to be fair, I’m not talking about “grilling” pies, but rather baking pies on an outdoor grill or cooker. Actually, baking pies with smoky wood flavor isn’t new. In fact, it wasn’t but a few generations ago

I

where wood was the only fuel available for cooking, and I’m betting that each of us has a great grandmother who baked pies in a wood burning stove. Pies are good all by themselves, but they take on a whole new dimension when their crusts are imbued with smoked wood flavor. And therein lies the clue: whether its brisket, baby back ribs, salmon, or even pies, the common denominator is having fat that

For pies, that fat is in the butter or shortening, which of course is a key ingredient in crust. Remember: fat = flavor. It’s as simple as that. Depending on your outdoor grill, you will need an indirect cooking system, but it’s not as complicated as it sounds. You merely need to have the fire/heat source on one side of your cooker, and your pie baking on the other side. Think of it this way: you are creating an outdoor stove. A Weber kettle, for instance, allows you to build a fire on one side of the bowl while you use the other side for indirect heat. Another cooker that does pies well is the Big Green Egg with its ceramic plate-setter system. This unit creates a perfect indirect, convective cooking environment, and its temperature

control is exceptional. One key thing to remember, though: don’t open the lid while cooking. The old pit smoker adage is true: if you’re lookin’, you ain’t cookin’! Apple pie, cherry pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, buttermilk pie, raisin pie, and even peach cobbler and more yearn to be smoked. Hickory, pecan, and even mesquite for those brave enough can be your heat/smoke source. So, come on by Jeff’s Backyard where we talk you through specifics on how to bake a pie on your grill! The Importance Of Family Time This Holiday Season Submitted by Steve Johnson, Owner College Nannies and Tutors he holidays bring back a lifetime of memories of traditions and great family moments. Between Thanksgiving, New Years, and everything in between, the opportunities to create memories are endless. Make those moments count this year by participating in family traditions that your kids will remember for many years to come. Having a family of your own gives you the opportunity to create your own traditions, as well as continuing age-old traditions you have kept alive from your own childhood. Traditions can be anything from activities, to special recipes, to craft nights. No need to wait until Christmas— try new activities all December long! The kids will love getting into the holiday spirit and having everyone all together during such a busy season. Cookie Decorating We already know that kids love cookies, and decorating them can be just as fun as eating them. Have special holiday cookie recipes handy, and bring out the frosting and sprinkles to allow the kids to decorate. They’ll love seeing their finished creations, and of course, trying them afterwards! Decorating the Tree Turn up the Christmas tunes, and gather

T

around the tree! Lighting the Christmas tree and filling it with special ornaments can turn into a very treasured tradition. Make sure that your kids have their own ornaments, and let them do the decorating! They will be proud of the finished product, and they can tell Grandma and Grandpa how much fun it was. Watching Christmas Movies Together Choosing a day or two to binge-watch the holiday favorites can be a treasured seasonal activity for the whole family. Cable channels play many holiday-themed specials and movies throughout the month of December, and some may bring back the memories of your own childhood! Pop some popcorn, turn on the Christmas tree lights, and snuggle up with the kids for a wonderful Christmas-filled marathon. The holidays are such a special time of the year. Take advantage of the season by bringing in new family traditions that your kids will think back on, and continue when they get older. Spend the season with family and friends, and ringing in the end of one year while getting ready to start fresh for a new one! If you need some adult time to prepare during this busy season, give us a call and ask how we can help. The entire staff at College Nannies and Tutors wishes you a wonderful holiday season, from our family to yours!

By Stefanie Young unta Del Cielo is the definition of reinvented traditional coffee. From the first smell to the last sip, their espresso emanates superior quality. The shop is full of light and open space, with beautiful cups of layered coffee and locally made pastries on display. The ambiance they create is great for meeting with friends and relaxing, yet vibrant enough to get the creative juice flowing for a work project. “We take a lot of pride in what we do here,” stated Julian Cuevas. “Our philosophy is simple, respect the coffee. We offer drinks that are focused around the coffee flavors without adding the whipped toppings or flavored syrups. It’s simplicity at its best.” Many coffee drinkers can relate to the commercial drive-thru scene with its overpriced and over-complicated drink orders, especially when on the go. Yet, here in the heart of Stone Oak there’s a café that knows people crave that moment to themselves, where they can experience a refreshing setting to take a deep breath and freshly brewed beverage made to their liking. They offer a meeting room free of charge, seating throughout the café and a nook for chatting with friends or immersing yourself the latest novel off your summer reading list. “We wanted to create an environment that invited people in,” explained Cuevas. “Whether it’s to hold your business meeting here, meet with friends or to get your work done, we’re here to provide the best coffee

to complement those settings.” And in the end, it truly does come down to the coffee. With every drink, fresh coffee beans are ground and brewed to order. With 4 different house blends, the strength and taste of your order can change. “We offer 4 different levels that range from M1 to M4,” said Cuevas. “The most balanced flavor is our M3, but if you would like your coffee a bit stronger or lighter, we can customize the taste to your palette and preference.” Not only do they offer coffee to meet your liking, they also make the perfect espresso. Brewed at the perfect temperature with a correctly measured dose of ground coffee and with the right amount of crema. If you’ve never had perfect espresso, it’s an experience to be had. You can visit Punta Del Cielo at 115 N Loop 1604 E and try the refined coffee for yourself. likely be retired for 20 or 30 years, it’s vital to take a long-term view of the retirement. Some will face an insurance coverage shortfall. Many of us rely on employersponsored health insurance. If we retire before age 65, how do we insure ourselves until we become eligible for Medicare? Will we need long term care coverage? As medicine and health care continue to advance, the possibility of a gradual rather than sudden death may increase. The wealthy may have the assets to contend with long term care costs, but the middle class rarely do. Age may catch up to us sooner rather than later. Many of us will live long and healthy retirements, but this is not a given. That means we need to find people we can trust to manage our finances and help us in

our daily lives if we become mentally or physically infirm. We may be alone sooner than we assume. Many couples retire with an assumption that they will be together for some time – but something may happen to leave one spouse alone. A single person does not simply live on 50% of the income of a couple. These are some of the common oversights that can surprise us in retirement. They may quickly affect our money and our quality of life. If we age with an awareness of them and recognize them in our retirement and estate planning, then we may be better prepared if they happen. We live in a world where even the smallest of luxuries are given to us every day. Take for instance our cars. Most Automotive dealers have discovered that offering excellent customer service is just as important as offering a quality product. Even the smallest cars nowadays have luxurious features that used to only be available in high-end luxury cars. The same is true in the housing industry. New homebuilders are adding high-end luxury features to their base models. Consumers demand granite, tile, wood floors, and stainless appliances no matter what price range! Trends in the housing and automobile industry start in the high-end luxury market and eventually trickle down to the average consumer. Here in San Antonio, the market for homes priced at $500,000 and above, is growing –

both in supply and demand. In September of 2015 there were 60 homes sold in Bexar county over $500,000 with an average of 128 days on the market, compared to 50 homes sold in that price range in September of 2014. Many buyers are moving here from all over the country and the San Antonio real estate market offers many great amenities at comparatively lower prices than other areas. With interest rates still low – many people are moving up in the market and demanding luxuries in their homes. Kim Lookabaugh is a Luxury Real Estate Broker with Kuper Sotheby’s International Realty. She represents real estate buyers and sellers, offering million dollar service no matter what the price range! Call her today at 210-776-3675.

CanBuild Food Drive

Various clubs gathered cans and built sculptures to display their donations.

Submitted By Shana Wetzel eagan High School’s Student Faculty Congress sponsored the first campus wide CanBuild food drive the past month. Various clubs gathered cans and built sculptures to display their donations. Junior Class Officer Julianne Lefelhocz was the mastermind in promoting and organizing the effort. Seven clubs from across the school generated donations and created sculptures with their donated cans and dried goods. Those clubs include: Mu Alpha Theta, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Biology Club, Math Club, Fashion Club, National Art Honor Society and the Class Officer groups of the Sophomore, the Junior, and the Senior class. Lisa Fragoso, Food and Fund Drive Coordinator for the San Antonio Food Bank, reported, “Your food drive generated 4,633 pounds of food which will provide

3,620 meals. This donation goes a long way serving 58,000 individuals every week in 16 counties in Southwest Texas. Thank you so much for your continued support in fighting hunger and feeding hope!” The RHS principals judged the sculptures. The Can Build Winners included: 1st place – MAO club 2nd place – Math club 3rd place – FCA RHS Class Officers and Class Officer Sponsors are hoping to continue the work of the Student Faculty Congress in this new tradition of supporting the San Antonio Food Bank before the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

Picture Perfect Holiday Pies By Tanji Patton Goodtaste.tv hen it comes to holiday dessert, there’s nothing quite like that perfect piece of pie no matter how you slice it! Plain and simple, our savory picks won’t disappoint. Take Bud Royer, the famous Texas Pieman, and his ‘Not My Mom’s’ Apple Pie shown on our site. It’s a recipe with a fun back story, as told by Bud himself, and stuffed with Granny Smith apples, copious amounts of brown sugar and heavy whipping cream. Plus Texas pecans! It’s like classic apple pie put on a tie for the occasion. And there’s more. All of our homemade

pies were handpicked with Thanksgiving in mind. There’s something for everyone, young and old, so enjoy – and remember to share! Nothing beats Ma Harper’s home cookin’. Her Creole kitchen in Government Hill is off the charts. After 70+ years you’d think her pace would slow — think again! Ma’s original recipe for Pecan Sweet Potato Pie is made with fresh sweet potatoes, peeled and mashed. Who’s up for a history lesson with lunch? Stone Oak Elementary Book Fair

Submitted By Deborah Deel ven after Halloween, Monsters were seen in the halls of Stone Oak Elementary School as the Monster Book Fair opened on Thursday, November 5th. Preview day started the event off with a lot of fun as teachers and students were invited to dress as friendly monsters. Friday the library was open for business with sales starting early and going into the night as the Book Fair coincided with the PTA Family Movie Night featuring, appropriately enough, Monsters, Inc. Students and parents heading for the Book Fair first wandered past a gallery of cute

monsters lining the library windows in the hallway. Once they arrived at the door of the library they had to brave the gaping mouth of the purple, fuzzy, 3-eyed creature guarding the entrance. There might have even been a special monster table inside with all sorts of fun, scary books to be purchased. November was a busy month at Stone Oak Elementary in addition to the Book Fair. The 3rd grade showed off their jump rope skills to their families after the General PTA meeting on November 10th. quality comfort food can be found at this haven in The Woodlands. Republic Grille’s Southern Pecan Pie has a flaky crust, and is made with dark & light karo syrup, vanilla bean and toasted pecans. I debuted a tart and creamy Lemon Meringue Pie from my mother-in-law, Helen, as part of a Southern Home Cooked Holidays recipe blog on Goodtaste. She made every dish with a little extra love. The lemon meringue pie recipe originally came from Helen’s mother, so for those of you into math, it’s at least 50 years old and still divine! Leave it to Don Strange of Texas to find a way to make pie even better with his Salted Caramel Pumpkin Pie Bars. These are cut like brownies, and boast a shortbread cookie crust with a delicious pumpkin-caramel layer that’s drizzled with caramel and topped with whipped cream. Let’s review the filling on this bonafide southern classic: graham cracker crumbs,

The students, and teachers, were happy to have a break for the Thanksgiving Holiday. December will kick off with the 5th Grade Performance on the very first day of the month at 7:00 PM after the General PTA Meeting. Strings will perform and have their Holiday party on December 15th. Finally, all the Bobcats will have their class holiday parties Friday, December 18th before leaving for the long break before classes resume in 2016.

Emergency Rooms: Dispelling Myths & Answering Questions Know in advance what your local ER offers so that when you have to make a life-saving decision, you know where to go. By Edward Wright, M D The emergency room in the United States has always been and will continue to serve as a catchall for medical issues. Why? The primary reason is that it’s always open: at night, on holidays and weekends, when your primary care physician is booked or unavailable. But the emergency room can also create frustration. This frustration stems from long wait times, the lack of a firm diagnosis, the resulting cost and paperwork — and many other reasons. Perhaps this frustration could be avoided if each patient (and their loved ones) developed a clear understanding of what an emergency room is, its capabilities and its limitations, before walking in. Here’s the truth behind three ER myths and answers to two common ER questions that might help develop that clear understanding:

Myth 1: All ERs are the same.

Let’s start with what ERs have in common. All ERs have at least one physician working at all times. All ERs can obtain advanced imaging (X-Ray, CT, Ultrasound, etc.). And most importantly, all ERs can stabilize critical emergencies and provide basic lifesaving care. This is where the similarities stop. Visit different hospital-based ERs or standalone ERs, and you’ll find that each has different capabilities beyond the basics. For example, almost all hospitals have gaps in specialty coverage. If you visit a hospital-based ER with a problem that requires one of these unavailable specialties, you’ll be transferred to a facility that provides it. If you’ve had a recent procedure, it’s always a good idea to return to the facility where it was performed. That will help you avoid a transfer.

Myth 2: ERs can test for anything.

Many patients believe that ERs can test for and diagnose almost anything. Unfortunately, the exact opposite is true. ERs have a simple focus: ruling out, stabilizing and treating life-threatening conditions. That means testing tools available at ERs are designed to diagnose emergent diseases or illnesses. This is an ER’s specialty, and patients with life-threatening conditions will be pleased with their care and thankful for these tests. But not all ER patients experience life-threatening conditions. In these situations, outpatient physicians and specialists have far more tools at their disposal to conduct tests and provide an actual diagnoses. ERs commonly offer blood counts, abdominal labs, cardiac markers, CT and Ultrasound — tests needed to diagnose and stabilize emergency conditions.

December 2015 • Welcome Home • 78258

ERs typically do not offer MRI and specialized/ uncommon lab tests. If they do, these tests often require hours or days to return results.

Myth 3: ERs can provide a firm diagnosis.

How often have you heard something like this: “We spent 4 hours in the ER, and they sent us home saying nothing was wrong.” This is a frustrating situation, both for patients and physicians. But it’s important to know and remember that an ER’s purpose is not to diagnose. Rather, an ER’s role is to rule out and treat life-threatening conditions. When a patient is sent home, there are two key takeaways: 1) There is no life-threatening condition, and 2) The ER lacks the specialized tests needed to diagnose the non-lifethreatening condition. Here’s an example: About 50 percent of abdominal pain patients leave the ER without a diagnosis. Of those sent home diagnosis-less, about 95 will recover independently without ever discovering the cause of pain. The other 5 percent will find a diagnosis upon follow-up with a physician. Only a small fraction of this group will be found to experience something serious like appendicitis. The lack of a diagnosis is frustrating, yes. But the ER has fulfilled its role in ruling out life-threatening conditions. Given testing limitations, the best an ER can do is to send the patient home with follow-up/return instruction and medications to help control the symptoms until you meet with your doctor.

Question 1: Why do I wait so long?

No one likes to spend time sitting and waiting, especially when there is a medical situation. Unfortunately, that’s the reality at emergency rooms. But why?

Here’s why: An ER experiences much higher costs due to stringent state and federal requirements, including 24/7/365 staffing, licensure requirements, as well as on-site testing and equipment. In an ideal world, each patient would know if his or her condition is life-threatening before pursuing care. That would eliminate an expensive ER visit that produces no diagnosis. But that’s why the ER exists. To help you know if your symptoms indicate a life-threatening condition.

When should you visit the emergency room? The answer is simple: Any time you are in doubt. While there’s the possibility that you’ll leave without a diagnosis, there’s the benefit of a medical professional ruling out something more serious. And if you are experiencing a life-threatening condition, you have around-the-clock access to medical professionals who are trained to stabilize the condition and connect you with specialists who can provide further care.

Be prepared.

If you or a loved one is concerned about a medical emergency – never take a chance. Your health is the top priority. Before you need an ER, identify the one closest to your home, office or school. Make a call and find out what services they offer. Many do not offer labor and delivery, but may offer limited GYN services; some are able to cast a broken limb while others will refer you to an orthopedic specialist. Know in advance what your local ER offers so that when you have to make a life-saving decision, you know where to go.

Full Functioning Emergency Room 24/7/365 ● Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians ● Full On-Site State of the Art High Speed Laboratory & Imaging Equipment ● Treatment of ALL illnesses including ALL medical & accidental emergencies

At a hospital, there’s a finite amount of money available to contribute to infrastructure. There’s not only an ER to run, but also operating rooms, medical floors, ICUs and myriad other departments. Many hospitals choose to focus their time, energy and money on highly profitable specialties such as elective neurosurgical or orthopedic procedures. Standalone ERs provide an attractive alternative. You receive the same quality of care, but you typically wait a fraction of the time. Standalone ERs never choose where to invest money, because emergency care and services are all that they provide. That’s why standalone ERs often offer a faster, more efficient, more enjoyable experience.

Question 2: Why is my bill so high?

This is perhaps the greatest frustration for patients, particularly if their visit to the ER results in no diagnosis. Many wonder why a sore throat or other symptoms cost so much more to treat at an ER than at the doctor’s office.

Submitted By Gina Faro ontinuing a long tradition of honoring its school’s namesake, Jose M. Lopez Middle School held a Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 11th. Lopez students organized a commemoration for community veterans starting with a “Breakfast for the Brave.” Student Hospitality Leaders treated our veterans to a delicious meal where ALE leaders distributed a single red rose to each veteran. Our veterans were then escorted to a school wide assembly where sixth graders wore red, seventh graders wore white and eighth graders wore blue. MSGT Jose M. guests recognized by Principal Eric Wernli, who began the ceremony by welcoming all our most esteemed attendees. Ronald Reagan High School supported the ceremony with its excellent JROTC program, the National Anthem was sung by the Lopez Choir and the Lopez Patriot Pen Essay winner, Annie Dole, read her stirring composition, “What Freedom Means to Me.” The beautiful voices of the Lopez Choir singing “God Bless America” set the stage for a most anticipated guest. Keynote speaker Lieutenant General (Dr.) Thomas W. Travis (retired), former Surgeon General of the United States Air Force, delivered remarks warmly received from the riveted audience. With his experience as one of the US Air Force’s few pilot-physicians, Lopez Middle School was genuinely grateful to have Lieutenant General Travis

speak to the audience and provide wisdom on what it means to serve, lead and inspire. Lieutenant General Travis commended the Lopez student leaders and encouraged the student body to continue to find their voice to propel themselves to a bright future. Following his speech, the Lopez Orchestra performed an “American Tribute,” by Kathy L. Fishburn while the Lopez Band continued with “To Honor, Thank, & Remember” by Michael Story. Jose M. Lopez faculty, staff, students, and parents are beholden to those who have served our country with dignity and valor. Every day should be a day of thanks to our veterans, who provide us with the very freedoms we savor. We are a land of the free, because of the brave.

utch Boy Cleaners has highly trained and experiences Cleaners and spotters. These individuals understand that clothes do reflect the person. They do their best to clean your garments in a manner that provides the best results. There is no one size fits all approach to quality garment care. Each garment is inspected for stains checked for unusual ornamentation or care instructions and then cleaned by the most appropriate means possible. The end result is a good as new garment ready for the pressing and finishing department. In the pressing and finishing department, the expert finishers have a wide variety of pressing equipment to properly finish each individual garment in the way the manufacturer intended the garment to be pressed. Cotton blouses need one kind of press, silk dresses need another press, suit coats need a special press and Dutch Boy cleaners has all of these specialized presses and then some to make your clothing look it’s best. To help your drycleaner do a better job

of stain removal, we suggest the following: Never put a garment away with spills or stains on it. The warmth of a closet and exposure to natural or artificial light and to the atmosphere can contribute to setting a stain. Bring in a stained garment as soon as possible, preferably within a few days, to prevent the stain from setting. Do not iron stained or soiled clothes; this will set stains and drive the soil deeper into the fabric. Always have soiled clothes cleaned or washed before ironing. Do not attempt home spot removal with either water or a cleaning fluid without testing first for colorfastness. Wet an unexposed area, such as an inside seam, and blot with a paper towel to make sure the color is fast. Never rub a stain, especially when attempting to remove a stain from silk. Blot the stained area. This will help remove the staining substance without spreading the stain and will avoid damaging the fabric. Inform your drycleaner of the location of specific stains and any procedures you have used to remove them, even if the stains are no longer visible The Dutch Boy Difference- We consistently provide you the best in dry cleaning. Hardy Oak Pumps Up Their Tires For Bike Rodeo Submitted By Emily Okikawa he Hardy Oak Elementary School PTA held their annual Bike Rodeo on Wednesday, October 28th. The excitement began at 7 a.m. as volunteers and Watch DOGS accepted bicycles from eager students. San Antonio Police Safety Officer Gordon Keogh provided vital bike safety information at the Bike Safety Assembly. His presentation helped prepare the students for the event, where they learned about being alert, the rules of the road, and the crucial reminder to always wear a helmet. “It should be like a seat belt and used every time a person is on a bike,” said Keogh. Before the event, Officer Keogh checked each student’s bike for safety and then PTA volunteers and Watch DOGS cheered the riders along their way. Hardy Oak’s fifth grade Safety Patrol Leaders assisted students along the course, ran scoring sheets to the judges’ table and passed out Spirit Sticks as the participants completed the event. Safety Patrol Ellie Okikawa said, “My favorite part was telling them they did a great job and handing them a spirit stick at the end.” Katherine Hawk, mother of student Morgan Hawk, said, “He loved bringing his purple bike to school. This is a bike that was made for him so that he can participate just like other kids.” Morgan was proud to earn a 3rd place medal and it showed by his ear

The figure 8 is my favorite part of the course and the hardest is riding slow in-between the lines, it feels like you’re going to fall. Winning a medal is pretty cool.” This year, the Bike Rodeo added “Hardy Oak’s Bike Wash.” Put on by Mrs. Golias’ class and parents, students blew bubbles while Rodeo participants drove their bikes through after completing the course. Special Education PTA Chairperson Kristen Donaldson said, “It was a great time had by all and thanks to Mother Nature for the added wind that made the car wash extra bubbly!” The annual Hardy Oak PTA Bike Rodeo was a successful event because of the hard work of Officer Keogh, Principal Lola Folkes, the Hardy Oak teachers and staff, parent volunteers and Watch DOGS. Submitted By Waheeda Kara abreez Kara, a 16 year old sophomore at Reagan High School launched D4D, Daughters 4 Detection. D4D is a campaign to facilitate breast cancer screening. Their motto is ‘Saving lives one parent at a time’. D4D not only caters to high schoolers, but to anyone who is looking to get involved. The group encourages and holds people to their pledge that they will keep reminding their mothers (and fathers) to

T

get their mammograms done. The pledge is signed and the D4D team follows up with reminders. Tabreez’s theory is that if the child keeps reminding and bugging the parent, the parent is more likely to do it. Her inspiration comes from her own mother Waheeda Kara, who lost her mother like aunt, Nasha Moody, to Breast Cancer in June 2013. Tabreez’s mom would not take care of herself and get the mammogram done until Tabreez and her siblings Shaya and Kas made her. She thanks Brenda Shelton, principal at Reagan High for her support. She would also like to thank North Central Baptist and other prestigious organizations who have also partnered with D4D.

Finally, NJHS is took the lead on National Anti-Bully Week from November 16th-November 20th. The goal this year was to focus on acts of kindness on our campus and in the community. One piece of the initiative was the Baskets of Joy NJHS filled during the week. The Lopez NJHS worked with Reagan High School PALS to create Baskets of Joy for children at the Battered Women’s Shelter here in San Antonio. The goal was to fill 10 or more baskets with items to bring joy to the children living at the shelter. NJHS collected items such small toys, stuffed animals, books, colors, coloring books, and any other items that will bring joy to the children from ages 2-17 who currently call the shelter home. The items were collected in the front lobby of the school all week and then assembled into the baskets after-school on Friday, November 20th.

Reagan Students Compete In Spirit Decorating Contest

Reagan PALS Donate To Diabetes Research

Submitted By Mallorie Thomas, Reagan Sophomore n an effort to promote school spirit and begin a new tradition, the Reagan High School class officers challenged each grade level to a hallway decorating competition the week leading up to the Reagan vs. Johnson football game. Each grade chose a theme and section of the school that they were responsible for decorating. The class officers came up with creative ideas to add color and excitement to the school, and encourage students to come out and support their team as they took down Johnson. The senior’s “Under Construction” theme filled the hallways with balloons and construction signs. They had a variety of Reagan’s clubs and sports organizations help out by providing posters which had been signed by their seniors as a way to provide recognition in the hallways. The seniors even had a “Senior’s only” fast lane to walk

Submitted By Jennifer Esparza n PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership and Service) HS at Ronald Reagan High School, the students are required to lead a service project per semester. Taylor Drew, a junior at Reagan, led the first service project of the 2015-2016 school year. From September 7th to September 22nd, members of PALS HS sold t-shirts to raise money to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the Walk for the Cure for Type One Diabetes. Reagan PALS HS sponsor, Jennifer Esparza, even sold to her students! After two weeks, PALS HS sold 327 t-shirts to 18 middle-school students, 43 freshmen, 41 sophomores, 67 juniors, 66 seniors, and 92 adults, including faculty. In total, they raised $4,168.48. After buying the shirts, Reagan High School donated a total of $1,900. After almost a month of advertising for post-shirt sale donations, Reagan managed to get another $600 in donations! On October 18th 2015, Ronald Reagan High School donated a grand total of $2,500 to JDRF. Those who raised over $1,000 were

on in the hall to avoid traffic. In the junior’s section, streamers were strung across the hallways and there were many encouraging posters to hype up the Rattler’s win against Johnson. The sophomore’s chose a jungle theme and made palm trees, paper flowers, and animal cutouts creating a wild vibe. Their goal was to kick the Jaguars out of the jungle! And finally, the freshman executed a Hawaiian theme by winding the staircases with streamers, hanging flower lays, and even creating their own Hawaiian hula girl. After all the hard work the students put into their decorations, administration and teachers carefully inspected the halls to vote on winners to be announced at the all school pep rally on the Friday before the big game. Everyone’s hard work paid off because of the energy and spirit the decorations brought to the school community. Go Rattlers!

Payton Weems-West was the assistant director and Mackenzie Corbitt was the stage manager. Adapted from the well know Grimm’s fairy tale and inspired by the beloved Disney film, this version was written by Kathryn Schultz Miller. Submitted By Risa Weinberger, Girl Scout Volunteer ave you had the opportunity to see the beautiful new landscaping at Fire Station 46 on Evans Road? There are three new trees, some perennials, new landscape boarders, mulch, additional top soil, and in the spring, new drought resistant grass will grow. This amazing landscape project was done by Girl Scouts in the Bush-Lopez Service Unit and completed on Sunday, November 1. Prior to the actual landscaping day, many girls and family members worked to clean up the front of the fire station on three Saturdays in September and October. They pulled weeds, trimmed existing bushes, and cleaned out plant beds. Station 46 fire fighters are so pleased with the new look of their front lawn. This project could not have been

completed without the help of some very special people and organizations. Girl Scout Troop #44 took the lead on this project. When the girls heard that landscaping was on the fire fighter’s “wish list,” they knew that this was a project for Girl Scouts. Under the guidance of Lori Rudolph, the girls started working on this project last spring. They contacted the Stone Oak POA for landscape design approval and assistance. Thank you to John Kiser and Todd Miller from the Stone Oak POA for their help and donations for this project. The Stone Oak POA also put the group in touch with the San Antonio Naturalists who helped decide what plants and grass would be best for the fire station. All of the plants chosen for this project are native and heat and drought resistant. The girls learned how to make grass balls using potting soil and potters clay to protect the new grass

The 8th grade program took it one step further and went 9-0; the perfect undefeated season! All Lady Bulldogs, consisting of over 160 team members across two grade

seeds. These grass balls will slowly break down and allow the seeds to germinate. This process helps the seeds from being taken away by birds. The San Antonio Parks department was also very helpful with this project. They donated the three trees and dug the large holes for the trees. Thank you to Gail Gallegos and Ross Hosea from the Parks Department for making these arrangements. The new trees will provide nice shading for the front of the fire station. After a couple of rain date changes, the group was finally able to meet on the 1st Sunday in November. More than 40 people attended the landscape day project. Working in small groups, the entire landscape job was completed in the three hours allotted. Thank you to Bob Jenkins Pest and Lawn Services for donating all of the mulch used for this project. The girls did a great job

Schools Collaborate To Bring Award-Winning Author Submitted By Christie Hirst arbara Bush and Jose Lopez Middle Schools worked together with other NEISD Middle Schools to welcome the award-winning author, Patricia (PJ) Hoover to their libraries the week of October 20. It was very inspiring for the students at both schools to learn about the author’s own “Hero’s Journey” she took as an electrical engineer of 15 years to become an award-winning published author. PJ Hoover explained that although

a computer-chip designer and a writer seem like very different careers, they both require discipline, organization and creativity. It was especially impressive to learn that the author persevered through over 200 rejections from the writing industry to finally fulfill her dream of getting published. Several presentations were made throughout the day to learn more about what the author calls the re-writing process. Hoover clarified that she doesn’t write, she re-writes, and re-writes again and again.

Students were able to relate the author’s writing process to their own experience with writing in class. In addition to her presentation, the author also showed off a few more of her many talents by solving a Rubik’s cube in under two minutes, and demonstrating some of her Kung Fu moves for which she’s earned a 3rd degree black belt. One of the most exciting parts of the day included a unique presentation to the campus Coding Clubs. PJ Hoover shared her original work in computer programming from college and the students saw a picture of the author’s first computer – a Commodore 64. The clubs had an amazing opportunity to interact with the author. She taught them how she used computer coding language to build her own computer games and website. Throughout the interactive presentation, students were able to go to
