‘Tis The Season… By Debby Seguin

I

t seems like every year the Christmas “Season” is beginning earlier and earlier. I thought at first it was just because I was getting older, (which is silly since I have been 25 for 26 years now), but I think there is more to it. In fact, I remember back in July, while rummaging through some half price beach balls and goggles at the store, I heard the distinct sound of a jingle bell. Thinking it was just my imagination, I didn’t investigate further, but then later that same day, at the Dollar Store, placed discreetly in the far back left-hand corner between the kitchen sink mats and the industrial size pack of doilies, was a small display of (and I swear this is true) glass Christmas tree ornaments. As my tan began to fade on the spot, and I froze with thoughts of all I still Agility

had to accomplish before The Big Day, I quickly covered the display up with some boxes of faux fur slippers to ward off any other would-be shoppers. After this traumatic encounter, I simply avoided stores altogether, including the “Seasonal” aisle at the grocery store. But alas, I was “invited” to Hallmark Channel’s “153 Days ‘Til Christmas” marathon! We need a Constitutional Amendment (or just some common sense) to determine exactly what date “The Holiday Season” should begin. Optimally, it would be sometime after I stop needing airconditioning (as well as enough time to financially recoup from “The Back-ToSchool Season”) and sometime before “There’s no room in the inn.” Mid-November is when people want to start hearing the nostalgic sound of the WalMart bell-dingers who, by the way, could learn a lesson from Pavlov and stop ringing the bell whenever someone puts money in. I’m not saying its annoying exactly but if the money flow slows, just a slight dingding and people will come out of nowhere, dumping change by the handfuls to make it stop! Give us until late fall to start thinking about a gift for that special someone, what we will bake, who we will visit and being good for Santa. I, for one, am determined to keep the Christmas season a special time of year. With everything on my list to do yet, it’s not as though I only have…4 WEEKS!!! Only 4 WEEKS!!! Why didn’t somebody tell me?! Debby can be reached (AFTER Christmas because she is BUSY) at writewell62@yahoo.com

Submitted By Julie Teplitz he Barbara Bush Middle School seventh and eighth grade football teams just wrapped up successful seasons on October 29. The eighth grade had one of the most successful seasons Bush has ever had. According to Head Football Coach James Street, the best part of the season was “seeing each and every player work hard to improve themselves.” This effort resulted in a team that had an 8-8 record in seventh grade improving to 14-1-1 in eighth grade. The seventh grade team finished 8-8 for the season. The highlight of the seventh grade football season was the improvement the team made week to week. The entire seventh grade squad is motivated and looks forward to improving their record next year.

Lopez Plastic Surgery...

By Ben Spicer

I

Enhances People’s Beauty

n today’s society, image is important. It often determines how one person perceives another or what one thinks of something. Quite often, that original perception is negative, or even flat out wrong. Misconceptions often are said about plastic surgeons. They can be perceived to be vain or shallow because they deal with body types and beauty. But many plastic surgeons often have a genuine interest to help the downtrodden, those people dealing with afflictions that affect even the simplest functions of a person’s day to day life. Dr. Manuel A. Lopez is one such surgeon. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Physiological Sciences at the University of California at Los Angeles, Dr. Lopez attended medical school at the University of Louisville. Dr. Lopez has called San Antonio home since 2004 when his military career brought him to the Alamo city as the chief of facial plastics at Wilford Hall Medical Center. After being deployed to Iraq as the head face and neck surgeon at Balad Air Base in 2005, Dr. Lopez in 2010 created a state of the art center for facial plastic surgery. “You can exercise, you can do things to make your body stronger, but really the face just ages,” Dr. Lopez said. “The work is to try to restore that youthful look.” As a Board Certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Lopez’s practice is exclusively dedicated to cosmetic & reconstructive procedures of the neck and face. “I love fixing – making the correction. Then I realized I liked facial anatomy, and the beauty of the face, and then enhancing it, and then I saw what it does to make people feel better about themselves,” he said. His patients are offered the finest in facial reconstructive and plastic surgery techniques to achieve reconstructive and aesthetic goals. Whether it is a change in appearance in order to look more youthful or a complete transformation, Dr. Lopez works to provide the highest level of care for a functional and a quality result one can be proud of. He combines an artistic eye with meticulous technical skill to give the best possible outcome. “I love what I do – every day I work I get to see the improvement and the changes,” he said. Throughout his many years of practice Dr. Lopez also has helped many patients overcome obstacles to live full happy lives. “Along with the cosmetic, I also do a lot of skin cancer reconstruction. So they kind of go hand in hand – one is restoring beauty, the other is restoring normalcy,” he said. “Those people who have skin cancer somewhere on their face, or have a defect which could lead to a true deformity, the challenge is to get them back to where they can get back

December 2013 • Welcome Home • 78258

to the grocery store and lead a normal life.” Dr. Lopez treats patients with a varying list of surgical and non-surgical procedures. Parents of young adults or children may choose to surgically repair protruding ears or have nasal reconstruction called rhinoplasty done to prevent teasing and boost self-esteem, while adults may desire simple correction of their lower face, neck or eyelids. Lopez Plastic Surgery offers facelifts, midface lifts, neck lifts, nose reshaping, ear pinning, browlift, eyelid lift, facial resurfacing, facial reanimation, botox and fillers. “It’s fun to be able to correct some of these aging changes in the face, but still make it natural, that’s why I decided to concentrate my practice on the face and neck, to restore that youthful look,” Dr. Lopez said. New technology and procedures have made it affordable and reasonable for those looking to improve their look. Short recovery times and the use of local anesthesia for procedures are new considerations that help those who live active, busy lifestyles. Men and women who have noticed signs of aging including discoloration, wrinkling and atrophy may choose to refresh and rejuvenate through laser skin care and injectables. Lopez plastic surgery has a laser skin center offering the latest technology for laser treatment including: • Skin Tightening • Wrinkle Reduction • Sun or Brown Spots • Vein Treatment • Hair Treatment Other rejuvenation services include TCA Peels or Melanage Medical Peels to help resurface and rejuvenate, and Botox, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, and Sculptra to treat lines, wrinkles and more. Lopez Plastic Surgery is located at 1314 E. Sonterra Boulevard in a spacious, out of the way office, with a gracious staff. They work hard to make sure patients feel comfortable, are receiving treatment for the right reasons, and receive the results they desire. Dr. Lopez believes strongly in supporting San Antonio and the surrounding communities. He has volunteered with and donated with many community service groups including several professional, civic, youth, and educational organizations. Volunteering in and donating to community service groups is a very personal issue for Dr. Lopez – one which he feels is a core value of his discipline as a medical physician. To Dr. Lopez, being a good physician can only be enhanced by the commitment one makes in serving their community.

Congratulations Lopez Region 2013 Honor Choir

Submitted By, PTA Community Relations n October 18 and 19, The Lopez Middle School seventh and eighth grade Choir Department had 66 students registered to audition at the Region 2013 Honor Choir at Tafolla Middle School. Of all the auditions from the many middle schools in NEISD and SAISD, 38 students from Lopez made it. Congratulations! The students selected for this prestigious honor choir will participate in a clinic and concert on Saturday, November 9 at Alamo Heights High School. Lopez Middle School wishes them luck. “Thank you to all students that auditioned. Our magnificent choir students work very hard and are fully committed, they strive for excellence in all that they do,” Amy Kelley,

O

Lopez Middle School Choir Director said. “That is what makes us so very appreciative of all their efforts and accomplishments. The Lopez Choir students raise the bar in character – they have high work ethic, respect, responsibility, ambition, integrity and honesty.” There are approximately 230 students in the choir program for the 2013-2014 school year, and they are very supportive of each other. They are very much like one big family. Many of the students involved are in many extra-curricular activities and sports, and we know the sacrifices the families and students make to be successful. We are extremely proud of our Choir Panthers! The Lopez Choir is scheduled to have their Holiday Concert on Monday, December

Hormones: Precisely Prescribed Produce Powerful Results By Donna Becker, D.O. Enhancement of Life (210) 545-5224 rue stories: (1) a woman told me she had been instructed to rub in about ½ tsp. of over the counter progesterone cream each day for relief of hot flashes. (2) Another patient came to me saying she had been told to apply a man’s prescription testosterone gel, “a little dab,” to see if that would help with her lack of libido. She had done that, but wondered if it was too much or too little.

In the first example, progesterone cream is not well absorbed, thus blood levels remain less than optimal. Progesterone is the one sex hormone that is best prescribed orally or intravaginally. Progesterone acts on the brain to affect calmness, on the breast and uterus to down regulate estrogen. We women need testosterone, but not the same as a man. Just the right amount improves mood, libido and physical endurance. Girl Scouts Collecting Used Unwanted Items

Submitted By Risa Weinberger o you have boxes of stuff piling up in your garage? Are you getting ready to replace a couch or dining room table? Are you remodeling your kitchen? Now what do you do with all the old stuff? Girl Scout Troops #1097 and #808 have a solution for you. These two troops are raising funds for a spring trip to Florida by collecting used items for their Good Will Collection Drive, a special program for non-profit organizations. The troop members will be happy to pick up your donations before the holidays. The troops have also set up a truck collection day on Sunday, January 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in front of the Wells Fargo Bank on Stone Oak (19223 Stone Oak Pkwy next to Taco Cabana). This will be a great day to donate after the holidays. Anyone in the area can bring their items to the Wells Fargo parking lot that day. “When we looked around our own house, we were amazed at the stuff that we had accumulated over the past 10 years. This project has opened our eyes and many of our friend’s and neighbor’s eyes as to how much stuff we all need to get rid of,” Mary Ann Salinas said. “They have been called to pick up all kinds of televisions, washing machines, and even a stove. We will take the smallest boxes to the largest appliances.”

Reagan Theatre Brings Holiday Classic

Submitted By C. Stier he Reagan High School Theatre will celebrate classic literature – and the holiday spirit – with their upcoming production of the most famous of Christmas ghost stories. “A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley” will be presented December 4, 5, 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. at the Reagan Auditorium. In this adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale, Scrooge is his miserly old self, but his deceased business partner Marley narrates the action. After assuring the audience that “I am dead as a doornail,” Marley offers lively commentary on Scrooge’s adventures with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. The production, directed by Reagan Theatre Director Gloria Robinson and Technical Director James Kaiser, will feature period costumes, dancing and music.

T

Actors will perform traditional English carols, including “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” a song Dickens himself refers to in the novella. In keeping with playwright Israel Horovitz’s script note that “excellent actors are found to play the roles of Scrooge and Marley,” Roddy Hemmick will portray Scrooge and Chase Bradshaw will portray Marley. The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come will be portrayed by Zoie Kruger, Kolby Jacobs and Mason Wilhite. Other cast members include Ellen Johnston as Scrooge’s sister Fan, Nick Hone as fellow apprentice Dick and Corbyn Sprayberry as his lost love. The production also features John Abiassi and Lily Myatt as Scrooge’s nephew Fred and his wife, Drew Nienhaus as Bob Cratchit, Bethany MacLeay as Mrs. Cratchit and Madison Merritt as Tiny Tim Cratchit. Tips For Pool And Deck Surfaces

Now let’s say we had taken that same log to a saw mill and turned the lumber into 2x6 deck boards. In the construction phase the carpenter will build the deck in a way to eliminate moisture traps. Architects Digest will give this newly constructed deck a 9-14 year life without any care or sealing. We would like that expensive deck to last 35+ years. This can be accomplished by using an oil base penetrating sealer like Barry’s Premium Blend. Cedar and Redwood boards rot from the bottom up. It is important to use a sealer that will follow the dry cell structure line. Sealer will flow to the bottom of a crack,

as a youth and a young man. For more information or to purchase tickets online, please visit www.rrhstheatre. com. through the knots, down the nails and over the end of the boards. Periodic resealing between 12 and 18 months allows the sealer to penetrate deeper and deeper with each renewal. You never lose the sealer being placed into the wood, but with gravity, the sealer continues to move down through the board. I now maintain over 10,000 decks using the Barry’s Premium Blend oil penetrating system. Tuscany Heights Red Ribbon Week

London Camp and Tusky show their spirit on Bully Avenger Day. Reagan High School cheerleaders visited Tuscany Heights to encourage students to be drug free.

Submitted By Michelle Kaiman uscany Heights Tigers took on the roles of “Bully Avengers” during Red Ribbon Week and Bullying Awareness Month. Throughout the week of October 21-25, students participated by having daily dress up themes to celebrate Red Ribbon Week and Bullying Awareness Month. Throughout the week, classes designed their own special Bully Avenger. Together they created a special superhero poster and displayed them on their classroom door.

T

Each day on announcements, students were given the answer to a question being asked in class. Also, the staff and teachers promoted classroom education to help stop bullying before it starts. The Reagan High School Cheerleaders welcomed students on Bully Avenger day in their own superhero costumes. Tusky, the school’s mascot, awarded each student a superhero spirit stick. Team Up Against Bullies had the students wearing their favorite sports team jerseys to school.

Students also wore their shirts backwards to turn their backs on bullies. On Bully Avenger day, students dressed as their favorite superhero, role model or used their imaginations to invent and dress as an antibullying superhero. On Thursday students and staff dressed as their silly self to promote everyone’s unique qualities. As a tradition, Tigers wore their bright orange spirit shirts to show their pride for Tuscany. Tuscany Height’s Red Ribbon Week also promoted living a healthy lifestyle. The week ended with an annual Bike Rodeo, and about 300 students participated.

Tusky the school mascot gives a thumbs up with Cate Ulestad during Red Ribbon Week.

Each participant completed several different obstacles and received a special spirit stick at the end of the course. Officer Keogh helped guide the participating Tigers and inspected their bikes, while other Tuscany students and parents cheered along the way. Many thanks to all of the volunteers and T.H.E. staff who helped make Red Ribbon Week fun and educational!

Neurosurgery And Spine Consultants By Dr. Gerardo Zavala Neuro/Spine Surgeon t Neurosurgery and Spine Consultants, we have been offering comprehensive and compassionate neurosurgical care since 2009. When it comes to surgery, our philosophy is to “proceed with caution.” Surgery is an invasive endeavor, which should be addressed with mutual respect and partnership between the surgeon and patient. Therefore, when considering surgical treatment conservative measures should be exhausted prior to making the decision to take the next step. When that decision is made, we utilize state-of-theart technology to focus on minimally invasive spinal surgery, neck and back pain, peripheral nerve disorders, brain tumors, and other intracranial pathology. In order to provide an all-encompassing spine and nerve care evaluation, our office

We provide Kyphoplasty to treat compression fractures under local sedation. The 2013 Winter Celebration – NEW LOCATION! By Amanda Burris

A

s winter approaches, excitement settles into the hearts of both adults and children alike as the season for holidays, cheer and giving become more prevalent. This December, Welcome Home Community Newspaper and the new non-profit organization, Living Through Giving, will be helping the community celebrate the season by putting on the 10th Annual Winter Celebration on December 14 at the Legacy Shopping Center at 1803 East Sonterra Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Winter Celebration brings the community together for food, fun, fellowship, and most importantly, to gather toys to benefit children throughout San Antonio. Schools from across town will take part in a friendly competition starting in November to raise the most toys for Toys for Tots and the donations will continue to be open to the public at Winter Celebration. Toys for Tots is a nationwide organization headed by the United States Marine Corps that aims to change the lives of local children by keeping their spirits intact. Last year, Winter Celebration collected 85 percent of the toys for Toys for Tots, collecting over 7, 000 total toys for local children. This year, Winter Celebration has made it a goal to raise enough toys so that no child goes without one. Families from across the city are invited to join in on this celebration that embodies the entire spirit of the season, while also establishing a true sense of community. The event will kick off at 10 a.m. with a parade filled with high school bands, mascots and various other eye-catching spectacles. The community is invited to dress in holiday attire and bring decorated wagons to be part of the parade. Winter Celebration will feature AirLIFE Santa, the Marines, 30,000 pounds of snow, performances from local bands, spirit groups, choirs and much more. Businesses will also have booths set up where they will offer everything from delicious food and drinks to face painting, giveaways and other fun activities for individuals of all ages. This year, the annual Scavenger Hunt for Winter Celebration will take place at the actual event. The Welcome Home check-in booth will be collecting toys for Toys for Tots as well as handing out the official Scavenger Hunt list. Participants will have from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to visit all of the vendors on the list and get their Scavenger Hunt card stamped at the vendor booths. Each stamp earns participants one general prize drawing ticket. Every 15 stamps will earn participants one grand prize drawing ticket. General prize drawings will be throughout the event and Grand Prize drawings will be held at 2:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to take part in this enjoyable opportunity. You may just end up as a lucky winner! This FREE admission event will not only be fun for the whole family, but will ignite some holiday spirit into the community and give back to those less fortunate. Like A Good Neighbor, Dippo Is There BetsyHappy Helpful Stone Oak Coverage

By Amanda Burris

T

he Stone Oak community has continuously grown and expanded, but one person has remained consistent and ever-present for the past 25 years. State Farm Agent Betsy Dippo is an embodiment of compassion, kindness and support and has been offering her services through insurance and community involvement since 1988. While Dippo never thought she would end up as a wellknown State Farm Agent, it was most definitely her true calling. Through her many great qualities, she overcame all of her personal and professional struggles in life and found she could impact many lives by working hard and being herself. “Our success is built on a foundation of shared values –quality service and relationships, mutual trust and integrity,” Betsy explained. Such great values and a strong foundation developed early on in life for Betsy. At age six, she found inspiration through a scholarship program with the YMCA where she, as the first female, attended day camps and afterschool programs. “It wouldn’t have been possible if not for that,” she said. “In 1965, I was one of the first YMCA day-campers. It started from there.” Community has always been of upmost importance to Betsy as she continues to grow her business. You can find Betsy involved in school functions, sporting events, Mays YMCA events, Stone Oak Rotary events, the Welcome Home Winter Celebration and much more. She is always lending a helping hand to bring smiles to peoples faces and success to the community. “We give where we live, we work where you work…we’re all intertwined,” said Dippo. “I truly believe you can never ever give too much back.” Betsy carries over her close relationships and connections to the business aspect of her life. By developing a connection with her clients based on trust, reliability and good intentions, she has found a way to help others protect the important things in their lives. “When a client calls in, they are not just a policy number to us,” she explained. “We know them, we know their kids. We can tell them what their policy covers off the top of our heads. Our clients know they will get the personal touch when they insure their possessions with us.” It’s what Betsy cons as, “knock your socks off service. If we don’t have an immediate answer, we will still call you to let you know we are working on it. But we know our clients don’t have time to wait for us.” While Betsy is personally high spirited and constantly looking out for the good of her community, she has been fortunate enough to have an office staff on the same page. “It’s a great environment,” said office manager Arlene Turner, who has been with Dippo for 17 years. “Betsy’s a

Our clients know they will get the personal touch The rest of Team Dippo includes when they insure their possessions with us.” Stephanie Hummel, Falon Rucker, Gaby Lom, Megan Hills, Ann Quigley, – Betsy Dippo, State Farm Agent and her loving and supportive husband, Jim Foderaro. Betsy is a mother of five and a grandmother. Her family life has played a major role in her life and Betsy’s daughter Brooklyn Dippo even worked in the office before taking on college in California this year. Her entire staff knows that if someone is in need, they are welcome to Dippo’s resources and opportunities. Betsy offers everything from Defensive Driving courses, free notary services and fax and copy services to not only her clients but to the community. Her homey and inviting office is a place where everyone who walks in will instantly feel welcome. Besides seeing Stone Oak change, grow and develop over the years, Betsy has also seen a change in the insurance industry. In the age of technology, many have Betsy Dippo’s State Farm Office Staff enjoyed a Thanksgiving thought to turn to the Internet for all of their needs, but dinner at the office with a pumpkin spice bunt cake. (l-r) people still find themselves craving meaningful business Gaby Lorn, Ann Quigley, Megan Hills, Falon Rucker, Stephanie Hummel, office manager Arlene Turner and Betsy Dippo, Agent. relationships. “Does that website know you have a pool or a sports court?” Betsy inquired. “How about a trampoline in your backyard? Does it know that you carpool, driving around several children to and from school or to after school activities like dance class, basketball or gymnastics? That you run a home-based business or are a troop leader? These are the things that are lost when you aren’t privy to accurate information from a trusted source. It really pays to have a relationship with your agent who can recommend what you and your family need that you just can’t get from a website.” Betsy aims to give her clients and all of those who come to her the best advice. Her office is unique because they also work to keep people enlightened so that they will be covered in the optimal way based on their situations and circumstances. Betsy and her husband Jim, in front of their State Farm truck. “It’s more about educating and making sure that they are protected,” Betsy said. Due to her compassion, amazing staff and family that she has not only raised in and around her office but that support her in all she does, she has found a way to use her profession in a unique and meaningful way. By providing the best coverage to her customers on what they hold near and dear to them and by remaining a positive force in and around the community, Dippo has and continues to impact many lives in the best of ways. “I focus on the whole community, I don’t just focus on my customers,” Betsy said. “I want to truly be the good neighbor, whether you’re insured with me or not insured with me.”

More and more employers are offering their employees the option of directing their health care spending with Flexible Spending Account Plans (FSA), “Cafeteria” Benefit Plans or Health Savings Accounts (HSA). Savvy plan participants are directing that spending towards eye care. Most participants know they can use

their plan dollars for eye examinations, eyeglasses and contact lenses, but there are many more ways to apply those dollars towards eye care. For example, plan participants can use their accounts to pay for prescription medications for eye conditions such as dry eye syndrome, contact lens care solution, corneal molding lenses, or even laser vision surgery. Other ways to consider maximizing your plan dollars would be to use HSA plan dollars to pay for a second pair of glasses, prescription sunglasses or special computer glasses. We also have fabulous options for ski goggles and Rx eyewear for your fun on the slopes. Another option would be contact lenses just for occasional use that wouldn’t have been otherwise considered. The key is to take advantage of the “use it or lose it” feature of your Flex Savings

Plan and USE IT! Also, if you are planning a big health expense in the coming year, be sure and set aside the right amount in your account at the beginning of the year. We can go over the prices of LASIK or corneal molding with you and help you to plan accordingly. Drs. Monica Allison, Jeffrey Capelle, and Lindsey Denison practice at Stone Oak Vision Source located at 19202 Stone Oak Parkway Ste 106 and are members of Vision Source, the nation’s number one network of private practice optometrists. Founded in 1991, The Vision Source network includes more than 2,500 offices in all 50 states and Canada. Feel free to call or come by to take advantage of your Flex-spending dollars today. A Big Lopez Panther Thank You Submitted By Lopez PTA Community Relations n October 11, the Lopez Middle School PTA celebrated their Seventh Annual Pantherama Festival. The evening was again a huge success once again for students, staff and the community. They all enjoyed great food from Papa John’s Pizza, Chick-Fil-A, K Hill BBQ and Smoothie King. The proceeds collected from the all-time favorite and the most popular Lopez staff dunking booth will help fund the eighth grade end of the school year party, as well as the funds collected from the carnival rides and shopping from the many local merchandise vendor booths. Lopez PTA would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: HEB,

O

Girl Scouts Family Fun Day A Huge Success Submitted By Risa Weinberger he first Bush Lopez Family Fun Day, held in the gyms of Life Time Fitness Center on October 6, was very successful. Girl Scouts and their families enjoyed creating edible fires while learning the Girl Scout process for building a camp fire; they made ice cream in zip bags, enjoyed the wall climbing and bounce house, created placemats for the Jimenez Annual Thanksgiving Dinner, created friendship bracelets, played a cupcake walk game, participated in a hula hoop challenge, and learned about some area Gold Award and Silver Award projects.

T

Each person was given a check off card and received a special Girl Scout treat when they completed all of the stations set up for the event. “By having my daughter’s Silver Award project as a station, she was able to explain her project to so many more people,” Yvette Hird said. “For a person just starting to feel comfortable talking in public, this was a fantastic event for her.” Jessica was able to collect a number of books for her Silver Project. “This was a fantastic facility to hold our Family Fun Day event,” Lucy Gutierrez, Bush Lopez Events Chairman said. “There was plenty of room for people to move

It can only get bigger and better next year.” With the Family Fun Day completed, it is time to work on the annual Girl Scout Mother Daughter “Mamas in Pajamas” theatre event. This year the moms and daughters will head downtown to the Majik Theatre for the production of “Skippyjon Jones,” based on the many books by Judy Schachner. Everyone will love the antics of this Siamese cat who wants to be a Chihuahua dog. The Gift of Giving at

Janie Christine’s

By Alissa Nagle

T

he holiday season is upon us, ushered in by family gatherings and holiday parties filled with festive food, cheer and warmth. Along with true joys of Christmas, Hanukah, and other special occasions celebrated at this time of year, also comes the ritual of gift-giving. The ideal gift can express love, friendship, happiness and deep appreciation, and sisters Cindy Burnett, Tiffany Rumbo and Wendy Hajj have perfected the art at their family-owned boutique, Janie Christine’s. Named after their sister, Janie Christine, the boutique was opened in 2004 at the Stone Oak Crossing Shopping Center. Cindy, Tiffany and Wendy lost Janie to cancer in December 2003. Janie was full of life, creativity and a passion for her family and friends. The store is filled with Janie’s creative and giving spirit and for the past eight years, has helped keep her memory alive. “Every time we hear a customer mention Janie Christine’s to a friend, see an ad in the newspaper, or a story in a magazine, it’s a constant reminder that Janie is always with us,” said Cindy, who along with Wendy, runs the store’s dayto-day operations. “She honestly would be so amazed at how many people in San Antonio know her name. It’s truly a humbling experience for us all.” Janie loved to share her joy for life with others around her, much like the store named in her honor. Tiffany, the storeowner, and her sisters work tirelessly to keep the store’s inventory fresh and meaningful. “We’re constantly renewing our inventory so that people continue to return to our store,” explained Cindy. “The payoff in the end is being able to see our customers leave with the perfect gift. They are a constant reminder as to why the work is so worth it.” Before choosing which new lines and products to incorporate into the store, the sisters turn - ready and receptive - to their customers. The retail business is constantly changing with many ups and downs, but Janie Christine’s customers are what inspire the sisters and have helped the store evolve into what it has become today. Stone Oak is growing and the customer base at Janie Christine’s is expanding right along with it. A few fun favorites perfect for that shoe-lover in your life are Lizzie Lou Shoes (women’s crystal flip-flops handcrafted in India with genuine leather and extra soft soles) and various lines from Yellow Box. Lindsay Phillips remains a popular choice this season, featuring dressy peep toe heels and ballet flats. San Antonio never strays too far from flip-flop weather, making Switchflops®, flip-flops that allow you to switch out the straps to fit any occasion, a popular pick.

News From City Council District 9 Councilwoman Elisa Chan District 9 (210) 207-0955 s I am sure many of you know, I submitted my letter of resignation to the Mayor and the rest of Council. Even though my resignation took effect on October 18th, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of my constituents for their support and participation throughout my tenure in the past five years. With my departure, the Mayor and the rest of City Council will appoint someone to take over District 9 affairs until voters are asked to select a representative in a special election in May of 2014. The appointment process will take at minimum two weeks, as everyone who submits their application to the City Clerk is interviewed and vetted by the Mayor and Council. I am recommending to the Council to select someone who can represent the District’s conservative views and has no intention to run in the May special election. With little more than 6 months between now and then, it is my sincere hope that the office will be given to a “care keeper” who will not use the office for political ends. The voters of District 9 should decide who would best serve and represent them. You will still be able to use the District 9 office and staff to facilitate any requests you have or to help solve any issues that arise in our constituency. Field office hours will not change and I will work to ensure continuity between my office and whoever Council selects to succeed me. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office if you ever need any assistance.

Physical Activity: “I Like To Move It, Move It!”

By Lee Adams, PA FP Walk-In Clinic (210) 402-0090 n last month’s article, we discussed that “Lifestyle Modifications,” which can reduce your risk of chronic illness and disease by 80 percent. This month, we will take a closer look at the physical activity aspect and discuss what types of exercises are recommended as well as how frequent and for how long we should be exercising.

I

For healthy adults under 65 years of age with no apparent chronic disease or condition, the American College of Sports Medicine and American Heart Association’s guidelines recommend moderate intensity

aerobic exercise for 30 minutes per day, five days per week. Examples of aerobic activity include walking, jogging, bicycling, swimming and using equipment such as elliptical and rowing machines. Moderate intensity exercise should cause your heart rate to increase and you should begin sweating but you should still be able to carry on a conversation. If you’re not able to perform 30 minutes of exercise in the beginning, start with 10-15 minutes and add more time each week (more aerobic activity may be needed if your goal is to lose weight or maintain weight loss).

Reagan Band: Season of Triumph Submitted By Kelly Lepeska n November 1 and 2, the Reagan Band competed in the BOA San Antonio Super Regional Marching Contest. With a show titled Epinicion, which in its simplest definition means “song of triumph,” the band certainly gave it their all and triumphed with amazing results. With over 60 bands competing over the two day event, and only 14 finals slots, all bands present gave fantastic performances. When it was announced that the Reagan Band was one of the 14 finalists, the entire Alamodome resonated with cheers from the

O

band, parents and alumni fans. The night was filled with excellent music, the best of the best. The band gave a riveting, energized finals performance and placed fifth, with one of the highest scores in Reagan Band history. It was a glorious end to the 2013 marching season, and the directors, parents, and Reagan Band fans could not be prouder of them. While the competitive season has ended, the band still filled their role as one of Reagan High School’s spirit groups, and played their hearts out to cheer on the Reagan Rattlers as they faced playoff season. After contest season ends, the band

In addition to aerobic exercise, it’s recommended that strength training, or resistance training, be performed at least two times per week. Healthy adults should perform 8-10 different exercises and perform 8-12 repetitions of each exercise. Although specialized equipment can be used for resistance training, it can also be accomplished using simple dumbbells, resistance bands, or your own body weight. When choosing which exercises to perform, it’s more effective to choose exercises that involve all of the major muscle groups (legs, chest, back, and shoulders). Performing a variety of exercises will help to burn more calories and provide strength balance, which may also help to minimize the risk of injury. Choosing activities you enjoy and trying new activities is the key to beginning and maintaining an effective physical activity program. Paul Rezaei, a Certified Personal Trainer at Lifetime Fitness, suggests that

the most important thing is to start doing SOMETHING! “By sticking to a plan, you develop discipline and a bank of experience you can rely on when developing future exercise goals and plans,” says Rezaei. For more information regarding physical activity and how you can improve your health through physical activity, check out www.exerciseismedicine.org or www. everydaychoices.org . By following the guidelines above, you too can “Walk Into Better Health” and decrease your risk of chronic illness and disease. If you’re ready to live a happier and healthier life, come by FP Walk In Clinic at 115 Gallery Circle, Suite 102, and talk with the friendly staff who can assist you in implementing the “Lifestyle Modifications” that will help you add years to your life and life to your years.

transitions into what is known as concert season. Students prepare new music and work on techniques that help give the band their amazing sound. On November 16, many band students auditioned for TMEA Region 12 District Band and successfully moved on to the next level of Region Band Auditions which will be held December 3. Good luck to all. As things seem to be quieting down, there are still many opportunities to see and hear the Reagan Band in action. On December 9 the band will perform its annual Winter Concert starting at 7 p.m. in the Reagan High School Auditorium. Admission is free and

open to the public. On December 14, the band will don their marching uniforms once more for the Stone Oak Winter Celebration. Come sing along to your favorite Reagan tunes. As 2013 comes to a close, the band can proudly look back on all they have accomplished this year. They will hold all of the memories and achievements in their hearts as they look ahead to an amazing 2014. The 2013 Marching season was definitely one of hard work and triumph!

Brush Up On Your Creativity At The Royal Canvas By Amanda Burris

C

reating a masterpiece that is unique to you and that you enjoyed making should be an opportunity that everyone, from children to adults, should get to experience. At the Royal Canvas, they have provided an opportunity for individuals of all skill levels to come together and create a painting that they can cherish and be proud of. The Royal Canvas offers classes and parties for both kids and adults. Canvases, paint, brushes and sometimes a basic outline of a shape are all provided to participants, and from there they are walked through each step of the painting by one of the experienced and kindhearted staff members. “It’s a great way to spend time with friends and family and to be creative,” Cassie Black, owner of The Royal Canvas explained. “…You don’t have to be a painter at all. You can come and create in a safe and nurturing environment.” The instructor of the class will explain everything from what colors to mix, which brush to use and tips on how to guide your paint strokes during the class. Creativity and personal touches are definitely welcome, which can make it even more fun for those who have painted before or those who have a unique perspective on the image. No matter your experience level with painting, you will be guided to paint what once may have seemed impossible into an exciting accomplishment. “Overall, I hope they achieve something they didn’t know they could do and that they are proud of themselves,” Black said in regards to her clients.

Paintings vary based on if the class is for children or adults, how long the class is and sometimes even by which season it is. Each month, new classes and opportunities are offered. At least once a month a couples class is offered where the painting is split in two for a fun way to bond with your partner through art. For the kids, The Royal Canvas offers special camps for when they are out of school during holidays or breaks. Part of the reason Black decided to open her studio was to provide a fun environment that not only she could enjoy, but also her children and other kids could. The kids classes and camps offered allow children to explore their creativity in a positive environment that doesn’t create a mess that mom and dad have to worry about. The Royal Canvas also loves to host events for bridal parties, team building events, going away parties, birthday parties, club parties and much more. Adult parties are about two to three hours long with a 6-adult minimum. Children’s parties are an hour and 45 minutes long with a 10-child minimum. Parties get to pick an image of their choice from the gallery for everyone to paint. These events are a great way to spend quality time with others while indulging in a unique experience that everyone can’t help but enjoy. Plus, everyone gets to go home with a painting that they created all on their own! If you’re looking to do something unique or just want a fun way to spend time with others, The Royal Canvas is your place. Adult classes are $35 for two-hour

classes and $45 for three-hour classes and children’s classes are $30 for an hour and a half. Painters are invited to bring their own beverages and food; The Royal Canvas will supply glasses and plates. Do your kids get bored during winter break? Take them to Winter Break Camp the weeks of December 23rd and 30th for a chance to make friends, paint a variety of pictures (which would be a great gift to give) and to tap into their creativity. To find out when classes are, camp details and more information on The Royal Canvas, visit the studio online. Stone Oak Elementary Celebrates Veterans Submitted By Marcie Thomas he fall season may be winding down, but students at Stone Oak Elementary have been busy as ever. In October, the school library hosted its first annual Storybook Pumpkin Patch and the response was overwhelming. Over

Reagan Choir Shines Submitted By Vickie Estringel, Booster Communications Officer he Ronald Reagan High School Choir and Booster Club have been quite busy preparing for and participating in many exciting events. Having just completed a very successful Fall Concert Spaghetti Supper and Silent Auction, the choir department has remained very engaged. At the Fall Concert and Spaghetti Supper, it is always a treat to be entertained by the “Singing Choir Dads” while eating a delicious dinner and browsing the silent auction. This year, of course, was no exception, and a huge thank you goes out to all those volunteers and sponsors who made this night possible. Following dinner, the audience was treated to a near flawless concert, in which all of the Reagan Choirs performed. The pieces performed by each choir took weeks to perfect, and were beautifully executed. We can’t wait to see what this group of talented students will have to offer at their Holiday Concert on December 12. Special congratulations go out to all those students who auditioned for Treble

T

and Mixed Region in the month of October. What a wonderful way to express all that is learned through the Reagan Choir. Of those Reagan students who auditioned, 46 made the Region Choir and 23 made the top ten. The time and effort put forth produced outstanding results. These results paint an excellent picture of the dedication that these students and their directors display towards the perfection of their music on a daily basis. Also in full swing is this year’s choir fundraiser. The “First Ever” Reagan Cookbook has made quite an impressive showing during the months of October and November. The cookbook, which is still available for purchase, has over 300 recipes, and features Reagan families, staff, friends and sister schools. The recipes vary from quick and easy to culinary chef and include both local and international cuisine. It will make an excellent gift for the Holidays! Come by the Reagan front office and pick up an order form. The first cookbooks will be available for pick up at the Holiday Concert on December 12, and free gift wrap will be available. Bon Appétit!

Stone Oak Elementary students then took to the stage to sing songs and introduce the veterans in attendance. Among all the veteran dads, moms, and other family members in attendance was also our very own second grade teacher, Mrs. Allison Martin, who served eight years in the U.S. Air Force. The school is very grateful of those who have served and are currently serving our country. Stone Oak Elementary is proud to celebrate you. This month also brings a lot in store. Las Lomas First Fall Festival Submitted By Kristi Walker as Lomas Elementary hosted their first Fall Festival on Friday, October 18. The students at Las Lomas had tons of fun and the event was a huge success. Grade levels were able to raise money to assist in purchasing educational supplies for their individual classrooms. Some of the festivities included a teacher dunking booth, duck pond, soda pop ring toss, bean bag toss, marshmallow madness, scooter races, bounce houses and much

more. There was even a jail that people were sent to. NEISD provided a police car for anyone to check out and take pictures in. Las Lomas Library sold Glow in the Dark necklaces, bracelets, fun loops and music sold smencils. Each grade level provided decorated scarecrows that both teachers and parents assisted in creating to auction off that evening. There were yummy cakes donated for the cake walk and some in the silent auction as well. Fun was had by all. The school can’t wait until next year’s Fall Festival!

Bush Middle School Celebrates A New Library Special To Welcome Home With the school year well underway, the teachers, administration and students at Bush Middle School took some time to show their appreciation for some special community members who helped make their library transformation possible. “This renovation was the culmination of a lot of time and effort from many people. We wanted to show our appreciation to all of the individuals who helped make it happen,” said Christie Hirst, the Bush Middle School Librarian. “It was a surprise to everyone to see how many people who played a part in this process.” The library hosted a morning reception that served breakfast, including coffee and yogurt parfait. Afterwards, a PowerPoint presentation featured pictures of the changes

in the library throughout the renovation. “You get used to the new look of the library so quickly, that it’s good to have the pictures to remind you of the changes that have occurred,” exclaimed Hirst. A second presentation was made to individually thank staff and community members for their contributions. Among those recognized were the school custodians, led by Anthony Merriweather, for painting the library over the summer and moving furniture and boxes. The Bush Middle School Reading Department was acknowledged for their assistance with classifying the fiction books by genre. Chrystal Payne, the campus bookkeeper, was thanked for her advice with paint color, carpet and décor. Special recognition was given to several community members with the presentation of “Super Bulldog with Pride” certificates

Ditch The Worn-Out Decor

I

t’s time to get your house ready for the holidays. But before you do, make sure to check that your lights and decorations are still in working order. Not only can old decor look worn out, but it also can put you and your family at risk — which is the last thing anyone wants at this time of year. CSA Group, a leader in public safety testing and certification, offers these tips to help you stay safe this holiday: Carefully inspect light strings each year. Discard any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. Inspect for storage damage from moisture or rodents. Turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring. Unplug light strings before replacing bulbs and check to ensure replacement bulbs match the voltage and wattage of the original. To avoid a shock from damaged wires, use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold light strings in place. Make decorating a family activity by

planning this year’s theme with the kids, but don’t let children or pets play with light strings. Keep electrical connectors for outdoor lights above ground, out of water and away from metal gutters. Connect outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI). These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing ground leakage and cutting electrical power. Use heavy-duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically animated displays, and don’t overload extension cords. If you need to purchase new lights, look for a certification mark to ensure they are certified by an organization such as CSA Group. And remember: outdoor holiday lights are made for seasonal use only; extended exposure to the elements can lead to damage.

SA2020 Creates Vision for Future By Ben Spicer t is a community vision of what the future looks like for the city of San Antonio. It is a list of goals created by the people. It is a movement, designed to get the people of the city to rally around a common ideal. It’s called SA2020 – and it is a nonprofit organization designed to inspire the community of what the future may be. According to their website, the mission of SA2020 is to, “catalyze the entire San Antonio community into passionate, focused, and sustained action to achieve the shared goals that will transform San Antonio into a world-class city by the year 2020 in eleven key vision areas.” SA2020 tries to connect the efforts of the government with inspired individuals, the private business sector as well as nonprofit groups. By doing so, each group takes on projects that will help reach the desired goals set by the community. The people of San Antonio developed ambitious goals for the year 2020. As a result, eleven key areas emerged. Those areas came to be the framework for the SA2020 vision, and are called “causes.” Each represents a vision for the city, and within each vision are measurable indicators with set targets for the next decade. The eleven causes are: • Arts & Culture • Civic engagement • Community safety • Downtown development • Economic competitiveness • Education • Environmental sustainability

I

Happy

• Family well-being • Health and fitness • Neighborhoods • Transportation San Antonio meanwhile continues to grow. According to the United States Census Bureau, San Antonio from 2010 to 2012 has grown four percent. With the influx of new families and businesses to the area, how San Antonio plans to deal with the increase in population and the new demand for services is an important question for the future. The SA2020 initiative is an attempt to answer many of these questions. Back when it was launched in the fall of 2010, SA2020 defined the comprehensive communitywide agenda. Residents of the city attended planning meetings and participated in

well below targeted amounts. Residents also used approximately seven more gallons of water per day between 2010 and 2011. They have used 583 more kilo watts per hour per household between 2010 and 2012 meaning San Antonio usage rates are also up. Roughly 20 goals however are on track or making progress. But more can be done. If you are interested in contributing to the cause, want to follow up on the progress, or just want to learn more, you can visit their website at www.SA2020.org. SA2020 is constantly looking for volunteers. A database matches interests to time commitments, many ranging from doing something as simple as greeting people to being full-time staff at local events. SA2020 encourages residents to become involved and help shape the community.

community surveys to produce a roadmap for the city’s future. Since that time, some of the original plan has evolved. On June 4, 2013 SA2020 released their indicator report. The report graded each of the causes and where they stood with their goals. Some 30 of the goals are still under further review, but many have already been met and exceeded. For example, response times for both the police and fire department have exceeded expectations for the community safety cause. Additionally in both 2010 and 2011 high school graduation rates met and exceeded the 85 percent target. As a result, a new, more aggressive target is being set for the community. Despite these great gains, many areas still continue to lag. Funding for the arts is still

K9 Corner

By Catherine Laria K9 Country Club (830) 980-8476 “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson s 2013 comes to an end, now’s a great time to stop and reflect on the years past events, goals attained, and things you want to accomplish in your future. Although I write mostly to pet owners, this article is for anyone. Anyone, for example, who competes, has children who do sports, owns a business, or is working on being a top salesman for their company. If you fall into any of these categories and have felt something is keeping you or your loved one from achieving a higher goal, pay attention because this could change your life. It did for me. Back in 2011 I hit some sort of wall. I was very competitive in Dog Agility and

A

was qualifying for every major event. But at those events, the results expected were just not happening. One would think it was a simple case of nerves and choking. The problem was I wasn’t nervous; I just wasn’t performing to the best of my skills. I wasn’t being beaten by my competitors, I was beating myself. I realized the problem was with my mental game. I was introduced to something called Mental Management Systems®. This was a game changer for me. After listening to one of the books, I won my first herding State Championship –now that’s not because the books/system are magic. What it did do was bring to light some key elements I was missing when competing. Things like focusing on the process, not the outcome, building my self-image and trusting what I had trained. The definition of Mental Management® is the process of improving the probability of having a consistent mental performance under pressure, on demand.

With the theme of Animals and Noah’s Ark, the children sang a variety of songs about animals, including acting out “Five Little Monkeys Teasing Mr. Alligator.” They also included a variety of favorite Hebrew songs, many that the residents enjoyed singing with the children. Following the sing-along, the children and seniors enjoyed a snack of animal cookies, penguin crackers and cranberries. During the snack time, Rabbi Howard Siegel played his guitar and led the group in additional songs. The program culminated with a special craft project that created a bright yellow sun with hanging rainbow yarn strings. Each attending resident was presented with the sunshine projects to help brighten their days.

Living the American Dream Submitted By Paul Loveless, RHS JROTC Instructor hat dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement.” The first use of the phrase “American Dream” was in James Truslow Adams’s 1931 book, The Epic of America. A simple Google search produces a significant amount of comment that indicates that, if the American Dream were ever true, it would be a nightmare today. Personally, my optimism has been somewhat weakened in recent weeks; however, I am surrounded by teenagers almost every day, and a few, like Samir Wadhwania, indicate that the American Dream is still very much a reality. My first memory of Samir and his brother Jamil comes from their 9th grade year. Discussing time management during class, the two brothers started to argue about how much time each spent on Facebook at night. Who won the argument is irrelevant; the academic rigor at Reagan High School forces Facebook to become a time luxury that neither could afford. I do recall thinking “typical teenagers” of the two, but I was about as wrong as I could be about two people. Both young men are exceptional students. Samir is the recipient of a four year Naval Scholarship that he can use anywhere in the United States while attending a university with a Navy ROTC program. He received confirmation of the scholarship the middle of September, the earliest I‘ve seen this happen. He wants to fly for the Navy with the ultimate goal of joining NASA’s astronaut program – a goal that comes with its fair share of skeptical responses from those who hear it. However, when you understand how far Samir has come, it becomes easy to see how far he will go. He is the son of immigrants. His father, Kamal Wadhwania, is from India and his mother, Rubina Wadhwania, is from Pakistan. Not an unusual story, his parents came to America in search of a better life for them and their children. Samir and his twin brother Jamil were born in Chicago, Illinois. From Chicago they moved with the family to Orlando, Florida to pursue economic opportunities. For a time things, as far as the American Dream goes, went as they were supposed to go: his parents had a business that was doing well, Samir lived in a nice home, raced box cars, ate grilled cheese sandwiches, and watched Space Shuttle missions leave from Cape Canaveral. It was these valued traditions of watching space shuttle departures that sparked his goal of one day boarding the space shuttle himself. So he started his journey. He excelled at math and worked hard at everything else; at the age of 10 he spent hours on the family computer researching how to purchase him a “space shuttle passenger ticket.” But, as many in America, the Wadhwania’s business failed. To get closer to family, the Wadhwanias moved to San Antonio when the brothers were 12 years old. Samir understood his parents had declared bankruptcy, and he knew his family was economically disadvantaged. Despite all of this, the financial deficit was compensated by love, care and support. While there are many more affordable

Reagan High School students Samir and Jamil Wadhwania.

locations to live in throughout San Antonio, his parents knew where the best schools were located, and found a way to make a home, in Stone Oak for that reason. When you have very little and you are surrounded by those with very much it might be easy to feel sorry for yourself and throw blame in all directions. Many of Samirs’s friends drive nice cars, have large bedrooms with big televisions, a pool and the latest smart phones. Samir and his brother share an older car, walk up three flights of stairs to their parent’s two-bedroom apartment, share a bedroom and bunk beds. Some kids work part-time to have extra money for clothes; Samir and his brother work to help pay for automotive insurance, gas and food. Where some might have seen obstacles, both of the brothers saw challenges. Where some might have given up, they found the motivation to work harder. Where some might have felt anger, the two found joy in their lives because of their caring friends and family. Both of the boys have worked hard throughout their high school careers. This year alone they are taking a combined 12 AP courses. While this may seem like academic suicide, the two have been equally as dedicated to their studies in previous years. Balancing extracurricular activities, a job and school, Jamil has successfully remained in the top quartile of their graduating class, and earned numerous awards in Latin and JROTC Rifle competitions. Samir was awarded a National Merit Scholar Commendation this year, sits in the top 5 percent of their class, captained the JROTC Academic Team to a third place national trophy, and although he might have one the smallest boy in the ninth grade class if we had this type of competition, he also commands the JROTC armed drill team and is a member of the raider team. Monday through Friday, from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., if you need to find either Jamil or Samir, start in the JROTC hallway; it is where they spend a good portion of their day. A few close to the family might know this situation, but most do not. While this story talks more about Samir, neither brother is defined by their current economic situation. Both are more accurately defined by their futures – not their pasts. Jamil is still not certain how college will be paid for,

SOBA Hosts Health Care Sit-Down By Ben Spicer he Stone Oak Business Association hosted a get-together for members and non-members alike on October 24. The event took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Knife and Fork Gastropub located on Stone Oak Parkway. The event was $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Roughly 40 people or so attended to hear Transition Care Health’s Dr. Stephen Roberts give his take on the health care changes that the country is enduring in the coming year. Dr. Stephen Roberts spoke on many of the strategies that the healthcare community is taking in order to continue to provide the kind of healthcare that Americans are used to; and while it will be a slow process he

SOBA also hosted a breakfast mixer on November 22 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Egg and I located on East Sonterra Boulevard. Each attendee was able to introduce themselves and their business. into the Stone Oak Business association with a ribbon cutting on October 15, 2013. It was a great celebration and was enjoyed by a large group of business and community members. Their modern and fully equipped medical clinic with attached activity center focuses on seniors with a friendly staff and two physicians, both bilingual. MCCI offers in-house conveniences such as lab draws, EKG’s and minor procedures. The Activity Center serves patients and the community at large. Recreational and educational group activities tailored to the needs of our community are open to the public, 55 or older. They encourage everyone to bring friends with them. MCCI’s clinic and Activity Center is the first of its kind, serving the North Central / Stone Oak area. The community is encouraged to call 210-495-022 and schedule a time to stop in (18414 N. US Hwy. 281, Suite 104) and visit with the staff and tour the beautiful facility.
