— Remembering D-Day • 70 Years Later — Eisenhower’s D-Day Speech To Troops This following order was issued by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage Allied soldiers taking part in the D-day invasion of June 6, 1944.

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force. You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-

arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battlehardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inSee d-day on 16

Wright Museum Honors D-Day’s 70th Hosts Special Film Screening

D-Day, June 6th, 1944...

The invasion of Normandy was the pivotal Western Allied effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. Thousands of soldiers died that day seventy years ago. Their sacrifice and what came of it can never be forgotten.

On June 6, 2014 the world will recognize the 70th anniversary of DDay, one of the seminal events of the 20th century. The Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, NH will honor this momentous anniversary with two special screenings of the Academy Award nominated film, D-Day Remembered. The June 6, 1944 invasion, officially called Operation Overlord, involved five beaches along the Normandy coast of France. Allied armies

landed at Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches. The American troops who were part of the June 6, 1944 battle would have landed at either Utah or Omaha Beach. The objective of the invasion was to secure a See film on 17

“Gathering Time At Belknap Mill Gathering Time, the New York based folk rock trio which delighted their audience last year, is returning by popular demand to the Belknap Mill in Laconia on Saturday, June 7th at 7pm. Last year’s sold out audience was attended by music lovers who enjoyed the dynamic harmonies ranging from joyous and energetic to sweet and sentimental, from socially conscious to funny and serious. They blend the sounds of a high energy Peter, Paul & Mary or a co-ed Crosby, Stills & Nash and couple this with the electricity of the Byrds, Joni Mitchell, the Eagles and America. No wonder they have captured center stage in the Northeast folk scene, already placing 19th among the top 100 national folk groups, according to the New York disc jockey survey. This year’s program will be enhanced by guest artist Mara Levine whose golden voice has been creating beautiful interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs. Mara often harmonizes with Gathering Time’s exquisite and often spiritual music as they jointly perform up and down the eastern seaboard. Tickets are $22 per person including refreshments and can be ordered at www.tbinh.org. If you are so inclined, do add an additional donation for Lakes Region Community Services.

*A FLATLANDER’S OBSERVATIONS ON LIFE

The Home Team

by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

There’s been a lot of attention being given lately to the names of certain sports teams on both a national and local level. These team names are considered by some to be derogatory reflections of a particular group’s heritage. Unlike those who are against these names beings used, I am not going to mention the names of these teams endlessly here to try and make my point. (In fact, I never really thought much about these team names until the people who are against them kept on saying them over and over again bringing them to my attention on a regular basis.) Whether I am for or against these names being used isn’t the point of this article. I merely want to suggest that if any of these teams decide to change their names to quell the uproar, I hope they might consider using a name that represents a part of my own heritage and call your team “Flatlanders.” The Washington Flatlanders. How cool would that be? I’m sure there are already more than a few of you, Flatlanders yourselves, who are sitting there open-mouthed and slack-jawed at such a suggestion. After all, isn’t the term “Flatlander” also considered derogatory to many who have moved from the big cities to settle in more rural ar-

eas such as here in New Hampshire? At one time this was true, it was a badge none of us liked to wear and I was no exception. But, unlike many new transplants who came before me and those who are yet to come, I have embraced the designation of “Flatlander” and have used it to my advantage, basically creating a whole cottage industry based on it. It has been close to twentyyears since I first approached the subject of talking loudly about being a Flatlander on these pages. I knew not everyone would be happy, many thinking that if it just wasn’t talked about it would go away. I knew that wasn’t about to happen. I knew that calling us “Flatlanders” was the only thing that natives (and those who think they are) had as ammunition against us. The only thing that would be able to wear us down. For many years they were successful until I took up the fight. Today the term “Flatlander” has, for the most part, lost its sting and is no longer a stigma. In fact, many today wear the designation proudly. That is why I think it would be a great idea in helping dilute the term even further by seeing the term “Flatlander” even become more widespread. What better way than the name of different sports teams? I’m sure that thinking on a national level might be a bit of a stretch right now, but I’ve always been one to aim high. There are a variety of high school teams in New Hampshire that are under pressure to change their names and I feel “Flatlanders” would be

a great choice. I would imagine that more than a few players on the teams are actual Flatlanders, so it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch And for you transplants who are reading this in your silent outrage (or noisy outrage if you are from New Jersey) think about how much fun it would be to go to a high school game and hear a group of natives screaming “Let’s Go Flatlanders” or to pick up the local paper one day and read “Flatlanders Are State Champs.” You know you’d love it as much as I would. It would be a sweet victory in many ways. I’m sure there would be much debate over what the team logos might look like. Some might choose the man with the roof rake, others might go with a perplexed figure at the dump for the first time. But it won’t matter, symbols of Flatlanders would become ubiquitous throughout the state and the original, hurtful purpose of the name would be diminished and even something to be proud of. Over the years the team name might find its way to college teams and even the NFL (nothing is ever impossible). We might not live to see the day, but our grandkids just might. Future generations might not ever know that the term Flatlander was once a bad thing. So, I hope I have changed the mind of some who would be against such a thing; I hope you have come to see my point of view. “LETS’ GO FLATLANDERS!!” Brendan Smith welcomes your comments at brendan@weirs.com

Shaking His Head To The Editor: The Obama administration is plagued with scandals. This is what happens when you elect a community organizer who is a student of Saul Alinsky and Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals. Benghazi and the cover up. Four dead Americans in Benghazi murdered by terrorists in a coordinated terror attack. A narrative was created by the Obama administration that the attack was a “protest gone awry over an anti Muslim YouTube video. The CIA knew within hours this was not the case. The video lie was concocted to protect Barack Obama weeks before the 2012 election. The IRS targeted conservative groups in the lead up to the 2012 election. Recent freedom of information requests prove that democrat senator Carl Levin from Michigan coordinated with the IRS to target conservative and tea party groups. Mr. Levin recently announced his retirement from the United States senate after 36 years. Now we have the VA scandal where falsified waiting lists have been kept in order to hide the true and disgraceful waiting lists that men and women who served in the United States military must face. Many veterans do not receive care in time and die. Barack Obama responded “that I am madder than hell over this problem. One prob-

On a larger scale this is the type of health care that has come to America under Obamacare. Jill Abramson, the now former executive editor at the New York Times in an interview with Al Jazeera America stated that the Obama administration is the “most secretive White House I have ever been involved in covering. Ms. Abramson has covered every White House since the great Ronald Reagan. Ms. Abramson was fired shortly after her interview from the New York Slimes. So much for the 2008 campaign promise of Barack Obama that his administration would be “the most transparent in history. What kind of a nation have we become? One that does not seek the truth. We are a nation who has politicians from both parties running around the nation talking about granting amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. And we leave our military veterans on the sidelines, in thousands of cases we leave them to die. We had Americans in Benghazi, Libya, denied them additional security, made no effort to defend them and save them from terrorists, allowed them to be slaughtered, then the administration lies to the American people about

Mixed Emotions To the Editor: On Memorial Day I had terribly mixed emotions. Our freedoms and opportunities to prosper have been purchased by our soldiers at great personal cost: moments of great stress and even terror, suffering, physical and mental wounds, loss of limbs, hearing and sight, and many gave their lives. We owe our soldiers much more than we give them. We owe them political leaders who consider each soldier’s life as precious. We must avoid war unless absolutely necessary for national defense, consider our soldiers the most precious things on the battlefield and to be protected above all else, and that there are no restrictions to our soldiers’ ability to win. Today’s volunteer military represent a small percent of our population so most of us are unaffected by the consequences of our leaders’ bad policies that cost our soldiers so dearly. Guest Editorial President Obama’s VA National Disgrace! We are now in the sixth year of the Obama Presidency. The American people are continuing to see our economy by Tom Thomson l i m p i n g Orfoed, NH. along at best even after Obama’s trillion dollar stimulus which he promised would solve our economic woes. During the past six years there have been many issues or should I say “scandals” that have plagued this administration which they for the most part brought on themselves. Some of those “phony scandals,” as President Obama likes to call them are: 1.The Benghazi affair; where four Americans were slaughtered by terrorists and our President and former Secretary of State Clinton continue to try and cover up the scandal. 2.The IRS targeting conservative groups, which during a recent national interview our President said there wasn’t a shred of evidence that this happened. Now we know of e-mails that were sent from the White House before this scandal broke. 3. And don’t forget Obamacare which is still playing out and unraveling before our eyes. Remember our President said (a.) If you like your Doc-

tor, you can keep your Doctor; period. (b.) If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan; period. (c.) For a family of four your cost for health care will go down by $2500 per year; and we now know these promises were all false. The VA disgrace is a blueprint for what’s to come when Obamacare is fully implemented. For me, I get upset about any and all of the above. I know there are folks who would disagree and that’s okay because, under the First Amendment of our constitution, we still have the right to free speech, which is just one the many freedoms our veterans have protected for us over the years. But there is one “Scandal” we should all be furious about; every Republican, Democrat and Independent should be disgusted with the outrageous scandal that is boiling over in the 26 Veterans Hospitals throughout this great nation. This is a national disgrace and one that President Obama owns and he has known about it since early 2009 and has ignored it. This story broke recently at the VA Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona where it has been reported that many of our Veterans who tried to get help were put on wait lists for months and the media has reported that 40 Veterans may have died while waiting for care. How could this have happened and why wasn’t it noticed long before now? We are now learning the VA Hospital See thomson on 24

The other country helped free that jihadist from Guantanamo Bay in a shady deal that appeased his far-left allies. Guess which side President Obama’s on. The widow is Tabitha Speer. Her children are Taryn and Tanner. Their husband and father was an American hero: Sergeant First Class Christopher Speer, a 28-year-old medic with the U.S. Special Forces. As I reported in my syndicated column 11 years ago, Speer died in Afghanistan during an ambush by al-Qaida

operatives. The remorseless Islamic zealot who lobbed the fatal grenade that killed Speer in 2002: 15-year-old Omar Khadr. Bleeding-heart activists painted Khadr as a brainwashed “child” soldier -- while ignoring Speer’s then 3-year-old daughter and 11-month-old son left fatherless in the name of Allah. Khadr knew exactly what he was doing: targeting Americans for murder. Sergeant First Class Layne Morris of South Jordan, Utah, was there. He lost his right eye in the ambush and said after the attack: “That was a trained al-Qaida who wanted to make his last act on Earth the killing of an American.” The FBI called Khadr, who was detained at Gitmo in November 2002, “cold and callous.” Terrorist videos showed the teen smiling as he rigged explosives in preparation for the fight. Obama Foreign Policy Speech, Like Policy, No Home Run Given his drifting and buffeted foreign policy, President Barack Obama had to hit a political home run in his long by John J. Metzler awaited policy Syndicated Columnist address at the West Point commencement ceremonies. Instead amid the majestic setting of the Military Academy graduation, the President presented a measured and lawyerly foreign policy lecture with a few good sound bites, few surprises, and fewer specific initiatives. Viewing America’s role in the world, the President strove to attain a rhetorical sweet spot between the temptations of isolationism and the pull of intervention. Instead we heard a rehashed defense of his existing policy with a few tweaks against terrorism. Obama had the perfect stage to present what was hyped as a major foreign policy address; an overdue reset of what both Republican and Democrat critics as well as American allies view as a loss of faith and respect for the USA in the global arena. Coming just days after his policy pronouncements on Afghanistan, which foolishly signaled to the Taliban the specifics of the American troop withdrawal plans, the speech presented broad brushed themes and only detailed an important $5 billion anti-terrorist initiative for the NEW YORK

developing world. . Richard Haas, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, conceded the speech “lacked a clear strategic rationale.” Reviewing key foreign policy challenges over the past five years, does the President’s rhetoric at West Point, match the sorry reality in which the world has become a far more dangerous, and clearly less predictable, place because of his wavering policies? Significantly, The Arab Spring swept like a desert sandstorm across much of North Africa; Egypt’s pro-American ruler was toppled only to be replaced by a Muslim Brotherhood regime, which in turn was thankfully ousted by the Egyptian military. Sadly Egyptians on both sides of the political fence blame the USA, and it’s far from assured that the new government of General Abdul al-Sissi will be a reliable partner. Egypt a pivotal ally for the United States, and indeed Israel, has become a political question mark. Libya. After the toppling of the hated dictator Gadaffi, the U.S. watched as Libya degenerated into militia rule. The premediated attack on the U.S. Consular facilities in Benghazi on September 11, 2012, killing four Americans, reflected the instability in which terrorists thrive. Today Libya remains in chaos and a U.S. Navy task force is on standby to evacuate Americans from the beleaguered country. Syria has descended into a humanitarian hell during its three years of civil war. While the

Obama Administration initially encouraged pro-democracy forces to overthrow the Assad family dictatorship, the USA failed to follow through early on with necessary aid. The conflict expanded, the reb-

els became increasingly radicalized, and today the options have dangerously narrowed. Indeed after the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons last August, Obama drew his infamous red

Random Thoughts R a n d o m thoughts on the passing scene: Will the Veterans Administration scandal wake up those people who have been by Thomas Sowell blithely saySyndicated Columnist ing that what we need is a “single payer” system for medical care? Delays in getting to see a doctor have been a common denominator in government-run medical systems in England, Canada and Australia, among other places. Class warfare rhetoric would have us resenting “the top ten percent” in income. But that would be a farce, because most of us would be resenting ourselves, since more than half of all Americans -- 54 percent -- are in the top ten percent at some stage of their lives. Some people act as if the answer to every problem is to put more money and power in the hands of politicians. Freedom means nothing if it does not mean the freedom to do what other people don’t like. Everyone was free to be a Communist under the Stalin dictatorship, and everyone is free to be a Muslim in Saudi Arabia. Yet whole generations are coming out of our colleges where only those who are politically correct are free to speak their minds. What kind of America will they create? In Thomas Piketty’s highlypraised new book, “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” he asserts that the top tax rate under President Herbert Hoover was 25 percent. But Internal Revenue Service records show that it was 63 percent in 1932.

If Piketty can’t even get his facts straight, why should his grandiose plans for confiscatory global taxation be taken seriously? Sometimes I think that this is an era when sanity has become controversial. Republicans in Congress seem to be drawn toward the immigration issue like a moth toward a flame. How turning illegal immigrants into Democratic voters, while demoralizing the Republican base, will help either the country or the Republicans is a mystery. If ever there was a high-risk, low-yield investment, this is it. President Theodore Roosevelt said that his foreign policy was to “speak softly and carry a big stick.” President Barack Obama’s foreign policy is to speak loudly and carry a little stick. They say talk is cheap, but loose talk by a President of the United States can be very expensive in both blood and treasure. One of the scariest aspects of our times is how seldom either people or policies are judged by their track record. Why in the world are the Baltic states in NATO? The Russian army could overrun them before NATO could get a meeting together to decide what to do. If the Democrats retain control of the Senate after this year’s election, Barack Obama can load the federal courts from top to bottom with judges who will ignore the Constitution, as he does, and promote his far-left political agenda instead, long after he is gone. I get nervous every time I see Mitt Romney showing up in the media. He seems to be maintaining his visibility, in hopes of another run for the White House in 2016. He might well See Sowell on 27

News From Live and Let Live Farm by Scott Philbrick Live and Let Live Farm

The spring mud and wildly variant temperatures at Live and Let Live Farm have been traded in for black flies and summer coats. As I write this column, the farm’s annual adoption event is in full swing, with puppies playfully jumping and howling for attention, and an array of momma dogs, goats, cats, guinea pigs, birds, ponies, and of course horses interacting with visitors. Prospective adopters explore the network of dirt roads, play with and pet the animals, and contemplate the adoption process. Last year the farm reaped over 50 adoptions as a result of the event, and high hopes are held for this year, too.

I had the privilege of being among the first to work with Cody, first healing his spirit, and then his body; restoring the depleted tissue and atrophied musculature. Restoring his heart. Twice a week I walked him on trails for a half hour or so. Then an hour. Then up and down hills. Then running up and down those same hills. I spent hours at a time socializing with him, whispering to him; becoming his friend. Many others worked with him too, and that’s one of the most amazing things about how LLLF is designed and operated. Volunteers with a wide range of gifts and abilities, pull together, coordinate, and achieve. There’s no ego involved, no competition; no petty vanities. It’s a remarkable system Teresa Paradis has achieved, and it works.

A Birthday Party‌. For Eternity

by Dawn Thomson Contributing Writer

Here at Reuben’s Rescue Ranch, we don’t always know the backgrounds of the animals that find their way to us. But we have one special farm resident, whose entire history we’ve been privileged to be a part of. She was born right here at our farm on June 6th, 2004. Her pregnant mother, Tiny, had come out of a Premarin factory, and was headed for slaughter, along with thousands of other pregnant horses. Live and Let Live Rescue stepped in and saved a truckload of these horses, and shortly thereafter, we adopted Tiny and her unborn foal. Premarin factory horses are terrified of humans, and we had to earn Tiny’s trust before her foal was born. With only a few weeks left ‘til the impending birth, we knew we had our work cut out for us. Every day was spent proving to our Mommahorse that she was finally safe with us. My entire family was over-the-top excited, to witness our first horse birth! As the due date approached, my good-natured husband agreed to be the night watchman.

PET OF THE WEEK Tiny and Eternity, just days after Eternity was born. The plan was that he’d inconspicuously perch himself in the hayloft, to await the start of Tiny’s labor. Once the big event commenced, he would awaken me and the kids, so we could swoop in with the video camera. Night after night, Tom waited and watched. And morning after morning, he reluctantly trudged back to the house‌..frustrated and disappointed. About three weeks into this nightly vigil, my husband was growing less good-natured about THE PLAN, and more and more exhausted. On the night of June 6th, he once again resumed his surveillance post amidst

the hay bales. Although he swears he nodded off for only a few minutes, the evidence proved contrary. When Tom came to, he was shocked to find himself staring at a wobbly-legged foal, already cleaned up, and awkwardly taking her first steps at her Mama’s side. He had missed the entire birth! So much for recording the delivery. Tiny obviously had other ideas, preferring privacy to notoriety. But how did Tiny know when Tom was asleep? I suspect that Tom’s richter-scale snoring capability might have been what tipped her off. See dawn on 12

Meet Lucy, a 2-year-old Border collie mix! This timid girl is looking for someone who will be very patient with her and give her all the time she needs to warm up to her new environment. Because Lucy is scared in new situations, she needs to go to a low-energy home and would do best with kids 13 and older so she is not overwhelmed. She has also done well with every dog and cat she’s met. She may be shy, but once she warms up to you, she’s a sweet little cuddlebug. Lucy is currently in foster care so it would be best to call and make an appointment to come meet her.

Woodpeckers and mourning doves, Oh My! It’s that time of year when baby birds seem to hatch overnight. With them come the daily calls to our store asking for assistance with “orphans.” Specifically customers are concerned about three things: abandoned, fallen or hungry baby birds. Our kind hearts can have devastating results in regards to baby birds. We want to hold, cuddle and protect them like a child. However, has any human child ever walked on the very first attempt? Learning to crawl is part of the education process that our sons and daughters practice before they can walk or run on their own. For birds, the flying process is also a step-by-step procedure. A baby bird’s first venture out of the nest is always a short flight. The ground will be the eventual destination and this is where many people find these baby “orphans”, right at this point of the learning process. If the baby bird on the ground has feathers, it already is a fledgling and is supposed to be out of the nest learning survival skills. The parents likely are hovering in a nearby bush, keeping a watchful eye on their offspring as it hops around. This would be a good time to keep your cat indoors. Even if you haven’t seen the parents near the nest for a while, the nestlings have not necessarily been orphaned. Adults often leave for hours to forage for food. It’s easy to miss their return unless you have

GRAB & GO GROCERIES the nest within your sight throughout the day. If the baby bird on the ground is covered with down, it’s a nestling and belongs back in the nest. If you can’t find the nest, it’s ok to substitute a container filled with dried leaves. Put the nestling down in the middle and hang it close to where you found the bird. I like to use an old spaghetti colander as the container. It is easy to fill with grass clippings and yet provides drainage in wet weather. It is strong enough to tie to tree branches and can be reused for future needs. Do not fear that bird parents will abandon the baby bird due to a human scent. In fact, birds have practically no sense of smell. They have tremendous senses of sight and sound, but smell is just not one of its strengths. The myth about abandonment of baby birds due to human touch was started decades

ago to stop children from picking up baby fledglings and bringing them home. Since that time, the myth has become fact for many people and created hardships for baby birds everywhere. Admire the nesting season as it progresses in your backyard from a distance and marvel at nature’s world of birth and wonderment. Enjoy your birds! Wild Bird Depot is located on Rt 11 in Gilford, NH. In any case, Tom sheepishly came inside to wake me and the kids, and told us to come meet the foal. “MEET THE FOAL?! You mean she’s already born?!” we complained in sleep-fogged voices. But any disappointment we felt about missing the birth, was quickly over-

come by the joy of this perfect new life in our presence. We felt truly blessed by this miraculous gift that had been bestowed upon us. We named our new baby Eternity, as a promise to Tiny that they would always be together….that we would never separate them. And we never

have. Not even at weaning time. As Eternity matured, many well-meaning horse experts told us that we needed to separate Mom and baby, out of site from each other, in order for our foal to be properly weaned. Some even told us to send Eternity to a completely different farm

Eternity is all grown. Reuben’s Rescue Ranch in Danbury will be having a birthday party for her and all their animals on Saturday, June 7th.

for a few months, so they could learn to be apart. Now we are certainly not “horse experts” by any means, but this advice seemed a little more than barbaric to us. We figured that, in the wild, baby horses are successfully weaned from their mothers without ever being separated from their herd. So, we resisted all professional advice and stuck to our guts. Rather than presuming that we humans know better than the animals themselves, we decided to trust Mother Nature on this one. And guess what? Tiny weaned Eternity all by herself, without ever being separated from each other….in fact, without any human intervention at all. That was 10 years ago, and we want to invite the public to help us celebrate our success story, with a birthday party for Eternity. Since we don’t know the official birthdates of most of our farm residents, we’re making this a birthday party for ALL the animals…. Tiny included….. to recognize each of their special lives. The birthday celebration will be held at noon on Saturday, June 7th, at Reuben’s Rescue Ranch, located at 161 NH Route 104, Danbury, NH 03230. For more information, call 603-630-2239. Ready for the War of Words? Be Informed! H o w many people believe if you are a conservative, you therefore, you are a republican? by Niel Young I am a Advocates Columnist fiscal and social conservative, and only registered as a republican for voter registration reasons. I guess being old, old, school Republican would describe me. There is pride in being a right-winger, Tea Party, principled common sense conservative, yeah, that is me. On the one hand we are told there are few jobs in America that need to be filled. My wife points out that there several job openings in the local papers. I am sure Obama would consider it racist if white and black Americans were cheating and receiving a government check for disability, or gee, there just aren’t any jobs. How many of my fellow working Americans have a morning where it would be easy finding a reason to fall back into that bed? But we don’t; people are counting on us being there. So, off to work, knowing that other Americans or invaders, are counting on part of your earnings so they can lead the life of fraud. ******** G W Bush tried to sell us on the idea that INVADERS were needed to fill jobs Americans won’t do. A few important Republicans – well, they see themselves that way – here in NH are pushing for Amnesty. Shame on those republicans so they can get cheap labor, and to heck with putting Americans to work. TOM DONOHUE, president of the U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, said “the GOP shouldn’t even field a presidential candidate

in 2016 unless Congress passes immigration reform this year”. Now Donahue says he was joking. ******** From MARY C. TILLOTSON of Watchdog.org: Alabama students who come from low-income families and are assigned to schools the state regards as “failing” should stay in those schools, a trial court judge ruled. An attorney representing parents in the lawsuit said they plan to appeal the decision from Wednesday. “We’re pretty confident that we’ll ultimately prevail,” said DICK KOMER, senior attorney for the Institute for Justice. “We also think we have a good shot at getting a temporary stay of the injunction,” or a ruling allowing the program to continue during the court cases. In 2013, lawmakers passed the Alabama Accountability Act, which allows the state’s residents and corporations to take tax credits for donations they make to scholarshipgranting nonprofits. Those nonprofits distribute the private money in the form of scholarships to lowincome families whose children are assigned to failing schools. Those students use the scholarship money for private-school tuition. An Alabama judge ruled against the state’s school choice program, but attorneys representing parents plan to appeal. Of the three lawsuits initially filed against the program, two have been dismissed. In the remaining lawsuit, the trial court judge put the program on hold until the courts sort out the constitutionality of the program. “Today’s ruling is disappointing and another example of the status quo fighting to block children from attending quality schools of their parents’ choice,”

said KEVIN P. CHAVOUS, executive counsel to the American Federation for Children, in a statement. “It’s shameful that a teachers’ union would put their interests ahead of what’s best for Alabama’s children. Too many children from low-income families are trapped in under performing schools and the Alabama Tax Credit Scholarship program provides a necessary lifeline to these children.” ******** COLUMNIST WALTER WILLIAMS: What would you think if your 8-yearold came home and told you that “white privilege is something that white people have, meaning they have an advantage in a lot of things and they can get a job more easily”? You would have heard that at the recent 15th annual White Privilege Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, attended by 2,500 publicschool teachers, administrators and students from across the nation. The average parent has no idea of the devious indoctrination going on in classrooms in many public schools. What follows are some of the lessons of the conference. In one of the workshops, “Examining White Privilege and Building Foundations for Social Justice Thinking in the Elementary Classroom,” educators Rosemary Colt and Diana Reeves told how teachers can “insert social justice, anti-racist information” into their lessons that “even little kids” can understand. This is the kind of issue we discuss during my radio show Monday through Saturday 1350AM and wezs. com streamed to the world Please visit my friend Julie Hurrie’s Run for the Fallen NH www.runforthefallennh.org. On Wednesday, June 11th at 7pm, come to the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in the Weirs to hear Bill Ricciardi and Jill Weed, owners of their Center Harbor Store The Edge – A Handcrafted Boutique. Recently celebrating their first anniversary in New Hampshire, Jill and Bill will tell the story of their move from fast paced lifestyle of Floral Park, New York, to the more quiet and creatively stimulating confines of a former dairy barn near the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor where they also opened up their unique store Memorial Day weekend 2013. The couple had spent the last 24 years travelling the craft fair circuit and operating a website selling their popular Tie Dye and Batik Clothing. Now with their first store front, they were ready to expand on their unique styles and ideas as well as forge new relationships with many local artists, as well, as some long-time friends, in operating their increasingly popular shop. “This last year has a been a real evolutionary period for us,” said Bill who, along with the son of a friend, turned the existing barn on the property into their new shop, The Edge. “At first we didn’t know what would happen with the store, it was a gamble. Living here in New Hampshire has given us the freedom to be creative and work with other artists. It has really been a personal transformation and the shop has exceeded our expectations.” Jill and Bill will also explain the process they use to make the Tie Dye and Batik Clothing for sale at The Edge as well as a show and tell with some of Jill’s new ideas and creations. Between June 6 and August 31, more than 30,000 Germans and 45,000 Allied troops died in battle, while hundreds of thousands on both sides were wounded or missing. The Allies eventually prevailed, spelling the beginning of the end of WWII in Europe. Wright Museum Executive Director, Mike Culver says: “This is one of those rare moments when the course of human history is altered within a 24hour period”. The 1994 documentary, D-Day Remembered, was made by the well-known late filmmaker, Charles Guggenheim, and is narrated by David McCullogh. move. Holes were dug, rocks were placed, holes were filled and gathering gravel to fill holes is quite a chore! We mined fill from the area where a tipped tree’s roots pulled up the gravel or raked up a washout and then shoveled it into a canvas bag and lugged it up the trail—repeat and repeat. Everyone worked hard together and the day was sprinkled with plenty of good humor and fun. Trail work is a good way to work up an appetite. My lunch never tasted better and it was fun to all sit together on the side of the trail along side our efforts. See patenaude on 21

We continued working our way up the trail and I was impressed it not only looked good but now it was a nice walking path. We wound down sometime past 3:30 and gathered up tools. Our timing was good and it began to rain as we walked back to the old fire warden’s shed to put the tools back in Hal’s truck. The shed was good shelter as the heavy shower passed by. Jeremy, myself and Bryan decided it would be good fun to hike up the Red Trail to the fire tower on Belknap Mountain and return via the Blue Trail. The Red Trail is less than a mile and as

I hiked up my eyes were looking at the trail in a new fashion and I saw all the work that needed to be done. I now had a good idea how much work it will require for the BRATTS to do it all,. Wow! The hike was pleasant and the clouds were low and limited the splendid view offered from the platform just under the fire tower’s cabin. We also visited the plane crash site on the mountain that is home to a popular geocach canister. We returned the Blue Trail back and Jeremy pointed out trail work sections that he had worked with the BRATTS

How To Replace Missing Roofing Shingles by Tim Carter

Syndicated Columnist

DEAR TIM: A powerful rain and wind storm damaged the asphalt shingles on my home. My neighbors are telling me I need a new roof. I think it can be repaired. The wind blew off a few shingles here and there. The roof is only three years old, so I don’t feel it’s an age issue. I realize you can’t inspect my roof, but can you tell me if it’s hard to replace a shingle or two and how one might do it? What might have caused the shingles to blow off? What should I look for up on the roof to make an evaluation if the roof needs to be replaced? --Jeremy W., Raleigh, N.C. DEAR JEREMY: Mother Nature bats last indeed. This past weekend I was in a cemetery, and my attention for a moment was drawn to a tiny mausoleum. It was made of solid stone, including the roof. Each side of the roof consisted of three large slabs of thick overlapping stone. I grinned thinking how the designer wanted a roof that will stand the test of time, but even

t DVMMJHBO!NFUSPDBTU OFU You might think you need a new roof when you see damage like this, but it’s possible you can repair the roof in less than an hour. those solid stone slabs will succumb to the effects of weather. Shingles can be made from many materials, including wood, metal or thin pieces of overlapping stone (e.g., slate). But far and away the most popular material in North America is asphalt shingles. The reason is they’re easier to apply, they’re relatively inexpensive and, when installed correctly, they can last decades depending on the slope of the roof. It’s hard for me to speculate what might have caused your shingles to blow off. One thing is certain: The wind was able to get up under the shingles that are now on the ground. Once the underside of the shingles is exposed to the wind, the lifting and tearing force

can easily defeat the roofing nails that hold the shingle into place. Modern shingles come with a self-sealing asphalt cement designed to interlock the bottom of each shingle with the one below it. If the missing shingles are on a steep north-facing side of your roof, it’s possible this sealing compound never got to activate as well as it should have. When the sun’s rays hit sh ingles, it h eats them up, causing the self-sealing compound to activate. In most situations, this compound does a magnificent job of welding the shingles together. The roofing nails that held in the missing shingle or shingles may have not held well for a host of reasons. Maybe the nails

To do this, you may have to remove the nails of the row of shingles directly above the shingle you’re installing as well as the next row up from that. This is where many rookies stumble because they don’t realize that nails from shingles above pen-

etrate the shingles below them in several places. Need an answer? All of Tim’s past columns are archived for FREE at www. AsktheBuilder.com. were not long enough. If you can gain access to the attic space below the roof where the shingles are missing, inspect the roof sheathing to see if it’s rotten, has cracks or is soft. While your neighbors may have great intentions, I’d ask at least two independent home inspectors to come out and give you an opinion. If you tell them you just want them to look at the roof, you could get a significant discount on the fee. Calling in roofers for this consultation might not be the best idea, as some of them will have a bias in favor of recommending a new roof. There are ethical roofers who will tell you the truth, but you need to make sure they’re the ones putting the ladder up against your gutter to go up and inspect. If you decide all is well with your existing roof and you have the courage and confidence to get up on the roof, you can replace the missing shingles with relative ease. It’s all a matter of making sure you don’t fall from the roof. Do whatever you have to do to be completely safe. I could write a book about fall protection, but that’s not what this column is about. If you look at the written instructions on how to install the shingles that are on your roof, you’ll quickly discover it’s a matter of overlapping one shingle over another and creating a staggered layout so the butt seams don’t lay on top of one another. You also must use the proper length nail, it must have the approved galvanized coating, and it must have the proper shaped head. Be sure you remove any of the old nails that are probably still sticking into the roof sheathing. You do not want to place the new shingles on top of nails that could puncture the new shingles! The nails must be placed in a specific region in each shingle. The

get a second chance to fail. Romney is the Republican establishment’s idea of the perfect candidate for president -- no matter how many times such candidates lose, even under promising conditions. Anti-Semitism may have the dubious distinction of being the oldest of the group hatreds. You might think that the world would have gotten over anti-Semitism by now, but Jews have been singled out for separate treatment by the Russian insurgents in Ukraine. “We cannot insure to the vicious the fruits of a virtuous life; we would not invade the home of the provident in order to supply the wants of the spendthrift; we do not propose to transfer the rewards of industry to the lap of indolence.” Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan said that in 1896. Today’s Democrats do all those things that Bryan rejected. Any fool can say the word “racism.” In fact, quite a few fools do say it. But clever people can also say “racism,” in order to get fools to vote their way. Those people who want Hillary Clinton elected

president, so that we could have our first woman president, seem to have learned absolutely nothing from the current disaster of choosing a president on the basis of demographics and symbolism. The old saying that taxes are the price we pay for civilization has long since become obsolete. The amount that the government spends to defend us from foreign attack, or to maintain law and order at home, has been overtaken by the money it spends just to transfer some people’s money to other people who are more likely to vote for the reelection of incumbents. Government policies to “bring down the cost of medical care” almost never bring down those costs, and often increase the costs. These policies simply refuse to pay the full costs of medical care. Any one of us can do that, but we know there will be consequences. There will also be consequences when the government refuses to pay the costs, but these consequences will be concealed and/or denied. The old saying that “politics is the art of the possible” is dead wrong. Politics is the art of mak-

ing the impossible seem possible, and even plausible and desirable. That is how ObamaCare got passed. To let the world’s leading terrorism-exporting nation get nuclear weapons can prove to be the most irresponsible and catastrophic decision in the history of the human race. It was also an irresponsible and catastrophic decision of the American voters to elect as president someone who would let that happen, basing their votes on rhetoric and racial symbolism. lines, threatened military force, and then waffled before both Damascus and the world community, doing nothing. Russia; despite former Secretary of State Hillary’s Clinton’s signature reset with Russia policy, the current relationship between Washington and Moscow is strained in ways not seen since the Cold War. Vladimir Putin’s nationalism and neoSoviet swag has bullied and dismembered neighboring Ukraine. While

U.S. policy has rhetorically challenged the Russian actions, besides some slaps on the wrist, Putin got away with Crimea. The Ukraine crisis is far from over. European countries such as Poland and the Baltic states, though NATO members, remain quietly nervous. Significantly the South China Sea disputes were mentioned, with Obama stating,“In the Asia Pacific, we are supporting Southeast Asian nations as they negotiate a code of conduct with China on

the South China Sea, and are working to resolve territorial and maritime disputes through international law. What the President failed to say was that Beijing’s territorial assertiveness is encouraged by the gradual decline in U.S. Navy sea power which serves as a counterweight in the Pacific. Equally there was no mention of South Korea, a place where many West Point graduates are likely to serve. Even ties with Western Europe, especially Ger-

many, remain strained in the wake of the NSA electronic spying scandal. This is one of the reasons why a planned Transatlantic Trade Pact, a win-win economic deal for both American and European consumers, is now in limbo. According to Mark Mardell of the BBC, “The problem with this speech is that it is a restatement of Mr. Obama’s policy, not a re-evaluation. He’s defending a policy that has manifestly failed to produce a stable world free

ately offended by, and demanding changes of, bad policies. In my lifetime the political leaders we elected, and trusted to conduct our wars, have limited our soldiers’ abilities to win… and even sometimes to survive. From President Johnson’s “acceptable” ten-to-one kill ratio and off-limits enemy supply routes in Viet Nam to Bush’s and Obama’s limited objectives and restrictive rules of engagement, too many of our soldiers have been wounded and died unnecessarily. Sadly, today we fail our soldiers and veterans even more than usual. Our soldiers returning from war are labelled potential “domestic terrorists” by President Obama’s Department of Homeland Security and efforts have been made to limit their Constitutional rights. And our VA (government run) health care is even worse than usual. Many veterans needing health

care are placed on secret lists so VA employees can claim bonuses for responsiveness. E.g., the Phoenix VA kept 1700 veterans on secret lists and delayed their health care, as a result several dozen veterans died unnecessarily. It is long past time for the American people to think of every soldier as their own child, parent or sibling, and demand that our political leaders do the same. Americans should not accept any war unless the lives of the children of our political leaders are put in jeopardy alongside the children of Third Street and Fifteenth Street, etc. If the children of our political leaders are in the front lines, perhaps our leaders will be more careful in their decision making. Scholarship Money Still Available for Boat Building

WOLFEBORO - Thanks to donations from several foundations, individuals and organizations, the New Hampshire Boat Museum still has scholarship money to award for this summer’s Boat Building Program. This year, scholarships are available for young people ages 12 and up who wish to take the Youth Boat Building Program from August 4-15. Scholarships are also available for families wishing to work on a boat together with children or grandchildren ages 12 and up during the Family Boat Building Program from July 12-20. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and are to assist youth and families who might not otherwise be able to participate due to income levels. To learn more about the program and the scholarships either visit the Museum’s website at www. nhbm.org, or call the Museum at 569-4554. Those receiving a scholar-

ship will be able to make a one-person canoe. In each class participants are taught the safe use of hand tools and small power tools by expert instructors, with plenty of individual assistance by volunteers. All materials and tools are supplied. You don’t have to be a “woodworker. Through hard work and the help of our volunteers you will create your own beautiful finished boat you will be proud to take out on the lakes and rivers when you finish the class. There are still spaces available in each session for nonscholarship participants. Those attending the adult course may choose to build any of the following boats: One-person canoe, Oneperson kayak (max 160lbs), 11’ 6 Bevin’s Skiff, 12’ 6 paddleboard, Optimist sailboat dinghy. Those in the youth course may choose from the following boats: One-person canoe, One-person kayak (max 160lbs), 11’ 6 Bevin’s

Skiff, Optimist sailboat dinghy. Costs vary, depending on the boat you chose with current Museum members receiving a discount. The Boat Building classes give you a great value because you create your own boat at a low cost and learn about boats and boat building from excellent teachers. The New Hampshire Boat Museum is a not-for-profit focusing on New Hampshire’s fresh water boating heritage and life. The Museum is open for the 2014 season Monday - Saturday 10-4 and Sunday noon-4. The Museum is located at 399 Center Street, Wolfeboro Falls, 2 miles from downtown Wolfeboro in the former Allen “A Resort dance hall/theater building. For further information on any of these programs contact the Museum at 603569-4554, via email at museum@nhbm.org, via the web at www.nhbm.org or via Facebook.
