COLLEGE SPORTS NICKNAME An earlier column examined New Hampshire high school sports nicknames and identified the Franklin’s Golden Tornadoes as the top nickname in the state. Now we turn our attention to colleges. New Hampshire colleges have unremarkable nicknames like Wildcats (UNH), Panthers, (Plymouth State), Owls (Keene State), and Hawks (St. Anselm). And worst of all, the lamentable and nebulous Big Green of Dartmouth College. “Indiansâ€? was much better. I have nothing against Lions, Falcons, Bears, Cardinals, Cougars, Bobcats or Tigers—other than they are blasĂŠ and say nothing about the institution. For example, MIT’s teams are the Engineers. That makes sense. Ditto for Purdue University’s Boilermakers. There are some interesting nicknames. Muhlenberg College has the Mules. Maine’s Colby College has the White Mules. But how about the “Golden Mules?â€? Earlham College featutes the Hustlin’ Quakers. I like that almost as much as I like Wilmington College’s Fighting Quakers, which is a bit oxymoronic, given that Quakers are ostensibly pacifists. Campbell University has the Fighting Camels. Alliteration has its place, as with Canisius College’s Golden Griffins. Coastal Carolina Uni-

Coastal Carolina University’s nickname is the Chanticleers. versity has the Chanticleers. As I doubt that many readers know what a Chanticleer is, I’ll share that it’s a proud and fierce rooster who dominates the barnyard. (I think I’d rather be a Chanticleer than a Mule.) Eastern Arizona College players are Gila Monsters. Nice. But you have to love Evergreen State College’s Geoducks. These are not birds, but rather the world’s largest clams, weighing three pounds on average, and often unable to fit within their own shells. Idaho has the Vandals, apparently honoring of the Germanic tribes that

sacked Rome. Larry Bird’s alma mater, Indiana State University has the Sycamores. But who wants to be a tree? (This is almost as bad as Big Green.) Athletes at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne are Mastodons. (At the risk of being sexist, I wonder if the female athletes at IPFW want to be Mastodons.) Lincoln Memorial University has the Railsplitters. Cool. As is Marshall University’s Thundering Herd. (But what do you call a single Marshall player?) Duke’s Blue Devils may

To the Editor: On behalf of Genesis Behavioral Health, we would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to the congregation of Temple B’Nai Israel and their “We Care program for selecting our organization as the recipient of the net proceeds from their May concert. A committed and caring group of volunteers truly went above and beyond to bring a fun, energetic and successful performance of North Shore Acappella to The Winnipesaukee Playhouse on May 2nd. A fitting way to kick off Mental Health Month, the sold out crowd was thoroughly entertained and enjoyed a delicious variety of refreshments donated by Moulton Farms and desserts baked by volunteers from the Temple. Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little. Together, we can do so much. The “We Care program is a shining example of what it means to be part of a caring and supportive community. It was a privilege to work with such a tremendous group of volunteers, all of whom were focused on ensuring the event was as successful as possible for Genesis Behavioral Health. Each year, Genesis Behavioral Health provides mental health treatment and support to over 3,500 children, families, and adults living with – and recovering from – mental illness and emotional distress. We can’t do it alone – and we are so fortunate to have community partners

Voter Mandate & Pitchforks To The Editor: On D-Day General Eisenhower did not tell his troops that we were going to defeat the National Socialists so that we could cooperate with them. The order Eisenhower gave was to rid the earth of Hitler, his band of murderous thugs, and everything that they stood for. In the November elections America gave the Republicans a mandate to stop President Obama and the Democrats from wrecking this country and we expect that this carnage be stopped and reversed. Republicans now say that they want to cooperate with Obama so that he will move to the middle. Americans don’t want to hear this nonsense because Obama is a leftist who hates our Constitution and deliberately circumvents it. Much to our chagrin, GOP House Speaker Boehner and all but 67 House Republicans joined Obama and the Democrats to repeal Section 716 in the Omnibus spending bill. Section 716 was included to prevent government bailout of Wall Street trading losses in speculative credit

Dr. Ben Carson To The Editor: Dr. Ben Carson announced May 5, 2015 that he is running for President. He is renowned as the Chief Surgeon (recently retired) of Johns Hopkins Medical team, widely considered the most gifted surgeon in America. He was the first to successfully separate conjoined twins, at their head. He was recently featured in the movie Gifted Hands, which plays occasionally on TV. He grew up in difficult circumstances in Detroit, but his Mom pushed him to read, raising an average performer to high academic achievement. He is married to Candy, who he met at Yale. They have 3 sons who all married in 2011. He has written 8 books. America the Beautiful (2011) displays his intimate understanding of what is wrong with the Federal Government, and how to fix it. Surgeons fix things, which is more appealing than Washington Insiders winning the argument. Our government needs a prescription, and fixers. David K. Martin Dover, NH

Not In The Mood

Weirs Times Editor

I knew it wasn’t a good idea this morning to write this column about turning fifty-nine and a half this week. I didn’t get much sleep last night and I may even have had a little too much cheese before dinner. I’m sure you know the feeling. But write it I must, since this is the time each and every week that I dedicate to this column, so I really have no choice. I decided a few days ago what the theme would be for this week and, considering that I’m not feeling my best this morning, I’m not feeling much in the mood to try and come up with a better idea. So, I’m stuck with this one. Deadlines are not very understanding. Last November I wrote a column on turning fiftynine and how I wasn’t going to let it get to me and how I am only getting better and wiser as I age, so I thought the idea would make for another “feel goodâ€? one this time around. But I wrote that column after a very good night’s sleep and, I’m sure, I had plenty of fiber the day before, so I was feeling pretty darn good and on my game. It’s no wonder the thing came out so positive. Even a couple of days ago, when I came up with the idea, I was having a good day. I thought it would be funny to comment on turning 59 ½. How I hadn’t counted

next adventure goes, all I’m thinking about right now is getting back to bed and taking a long nap until I can pull myself together. So, I apologize to you the readers. I was truly planning on filling this page with wonderful words of inspiration to all of you who are fretting about an upcoming birthday. I really wanted to tell you that it really is how you think about who you are that determines how old you really are. How getting older isn’t a matter of numbers, it’s a matter of words, the words you say to yourself every day. I wanted to tell you that age is really all about perception and intention. I guess all of that is going to have to wait for another day because, frankly, I’m just not feeling it. What can I say, it’s just one of those days. I’m sure I’ll be feeling better next week when I sit down to write, but it will be about something completely different since this idea’s time will have passed. I guess you will all just have to take it upon yourselves to try and figure out where I was supposed to go with all of this today. I do apologize for not following through but I’m sure that you have been in the same situation yourself on occasion. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to take care of some urgent business. I’ll see you next week.

my age in halves since I was probably nine. How it wouldn’t be cool to tell people you were at a half-year in age when you were in your teens. How, after thirty, you certainly didn’t want to be rushing things along by actually making yourself older by adding a half-year on. Then I thought, as I was turning sixty exactly six months from the publication date of this issue, that it would be funny to say that anytime anyone asked me how old I was going to be this year, I could say “fifty-nine and a half in a humorous way of holding off the inevitable. The idea was to give it all a light–hearted feel. Of course, all of this seemed like such a good idea forty-eight hours ago with a clear head and system. But now, here I am at the time and place of my deadline, and I’m not feeling all that great about it. In fact, I’m a little bummed. I was supposed to write that now that fifty-nine and a half has passed and I have to own up to sixty, it really isn’t all that bad. How each and every day is a new journey and I have no regrets and how I am looking forward to my next great adventure. In all honesty, I’m not feeling it right now. I am having a few regrets, but at the time that fourteenth piece of Monterey Jack cheese tasted really good and as far as my

What Assata Taught Me “What Assata taught me” is the new “Hands up, don’t shoot.” For $35, you, too, can sport a politically correct by Michelle Malkin black hoodie Syndicated Columnist emb la zo n ed with a fugitive convicted murderer’s name. Assata’s apparel is the new rage among perpetually enraged Baltimore and Ferguson social justice warriors. It won’t be long now before hipster actresses and cable news progressives are Instagramming themselves wearing this latest entry in radical chic to show their “solidarity.” Here’s what Assata taught me: The left’s sick fetish for cop-killers is still going strong after four decades of violence, bloodshed, bigotry and excuses. The timing couldn’t be more blood-boiling. As the relatives, friends and colleagues of NYPD Officer Brian Moore, 25, prepare to bury their hero on Friday after he was brazenly shot in the face this weekend by a thug with a long rap sheet and a deep hatred of police, Assata’s army remains as militant as ever. “Assata” is Assata Shakur, a.k.a. Joanne Chesimard. Forty-two years ago this week, the radical black leader shot and killed New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster execution-style during a traffic stop. The gunfight also left her brother-in-law, Black Liberation Army leader Zayd Malik Shakur, dead. At the time, the BLA had been tied to the murders of more than 10 police officers across the country. Before Chesimard’s shoo-

tout, the BLA had ambushed two pairs of NYPD officers in a 48-hour spree, killing two of them; murdered another cop in Atlanta; and executed another pair of NYPD officers in 1972. Chesimard, Zayd Shakur and another member were wanted for questioning in the murder of two of those cops when they were stopped. Just as New York City has endured the targeted assassinations of three officers (Moore, Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos) in the past five months by vengeful black assailants -- plus the hatchet jihad attack last October that wounded Officer Kenneth Healey in the head and slashed Officer Joseph Meeker in the arm -- the nation endured a “terror and chaos” campaign by the BLA aimed at “assassinating law enforcement officers” between 1968 and 1973 and again in 1981. Chesimard was convicted and sentenced to life in 1977, but escaped from prison two years later with help from violent leftwing accomplices. Chesimard’s colleague, BLA killer Tyrone Rison, admitted to participating in a series of armored-car robberies, including a $250,000 heist in the Bronx in June 1981, which left a Brink’s guard dead. Rison also confessed to taking part in the planning of the Rockland County, N.Y., $1.6 million Brink’s robbery by leftwing domestic terrorists in October 1981. Police officers Waverly Brown and Edward O’Grady and Brink’s guard Peter Paige were murdered during the siege. Chesimard’s brother, Jeral Wayne Williams (a.k.a. Mutulu Shakur), was the convicted ringleader of the group responsible for murdering those

NHRTL is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster respect, without exception, for all human life from the moment of fertilization to natural death, and to promote the right to life as the paramount issue of our time. As President of NHRTL, I look forward to promoting our mission here in New Hampshire, as we will be very active and involved in many different events. We are also excited to have a spiffy new office in downtown Concord. As a life organization, it is very important that See malkin on 21 the messaging of our mission is

active and optimistic and being in our state capitol certainly is very helpful. In an endeavor to bring our message to communities throughout New Hampshire, NHRTL has instituted an initiative called CHAMP (Changing Hearts and Minds Project). We will formerly kick off our new CHAMP program, “Luncheons for Life!” throughout the Granite State this month. Luncheons for Life! will offer churches and community organizations a different venue for discussing life principles. It will feature discussions on life initiatives available to support “changing hearts and minds” in our communities, and introduce the upbeat message of Personhood into our communities. The goal of CHAMP is to address the specific needs within a local community with regard to life principles. NHRTL believes the power of positive messaging See cormier on 30

Why a Profitable Business Should Know About The New Hampshire Education Tax Credit Business leaders make tough decisions e v e r y day. From strategic planning and by Kate Baker staffing to Contributiing Writer competition and the challenging regulatory environment, business success is measured in large part by the ability choose the right path forward. Imagine not being able to choose that right path. Imagine the frustration of knowing what you need to do, but not being able to do it. We’ve all faced this frustration at some point in our lives: a challenge we couldn’t overcome on

our own. When one looks beyond their business for help, they find the SBA, a financial advisor, a business mentor -- someone who made the difference. Now imagine being that person, being the one bridging the gap between success and failure. Thanks to New Hampshire’s Education Tax Credit program, business owners can be a lifeline to parents trying to make the right educational decisions for their children. Parents across the state are facing the same frustrations faced in businesses as they discover that the right path for their children’s education is unaffordable. In helping these parents do what’s right, we’re also helping to build the nextgeneration Granite State workforce: an educated, motivated group of young men and women who will owe their success in no

British Conservatives Sweep Back to Power/Defy Naysayers UNITED NATIONS--Defying dire polls, deflating many media pundits, and derailing a left-wing lurch from the Labor Party, Prime by John J. Metzler Minister DaSyndicated Columnist vid Cameron Conservative Party swept back into power for a second term with a shock election win and a reinvigorated majority. Cameron’s victory was all the sweeter as it precluded his party from having to enter the messy business of coalition politics and the political “horse trading” which could have hampered him for weeks. The resounding victory by Mr. Cameron, comes amid both political kudos and dire warnings. On the one hand the Conservatives won 330 seats in the 650 seat House of Parliament, a commendable feat in any election. Yet part of the victory comes by default from the Labor party itself who swerved Leftwards under Ed Miliband and reminded people more of the socialist tub-thumping Old La-

bor of the 1950’s than of what had become the successful New Labor under Tony Blair in the 1990’s . Indeed on economic issues, most voters see the Conservatives as better stewards of growth and revived prosperity than the statist and socialist Labor. But ill winds still blow in Scotland where the separatist Scottish National Party (SNP) swept the table winning all 56 parliamentary seats at the expense of both the Tories and Labor. Had Labor won, they would have been likely dependent on the graces of a party which wants to dismantle the country. “The Scottish lion has roared this morning across the country” boasted a key SNP politico. Though Scots resoundingly rejected an independence referendum last September, the political genie is out of the bottle and the issue is hardly resolved. Neither the Conservatives not the Labor party seem to have the magic formula to keep Scotland within the United Kingdom long term. Scotland thus presents a political fault line which could likely jolt the UK in the future. See Metzler on 30

What is an Education Tax Credit?
“Investing in education” has become a buzz-phrase that often doesn’t include the key decision maker: Parents. Parents are the natural and rightful repre-

sentatives for their children’s preparation for life. Sadly, too many parents lack the financial resources to exercise their freedom to choose the best education options for their children. This is where the Education Tax Credit (ETC) program makes the differSee baker on 26

Race, Politics and Lies Among the many painful ironies in the current racial turmoil is that communities scattered across the country were disrupted by riots and by Thomas Sowell l o o t i n g b e Syndicated Columnist cause of the demonstrable lie that Michael Brown was shot in the back by a white policeman in Missouri -- but there was not nearly as much turmoil created by the demonstrable fact that a fleeing black man was shot dead by a white policeman in South Carolina. Totally ignored was the fact that a black policeman in Alabama fatally shot an unarmed white teenager, and was cleared of any charges, at about the same time that a white policeman was cleared of charges in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. In a world where the truth means so little, and headstrong preconceptions seem to be all that matter, what hope is there for rational words or rational behavior, much less mutual understanding across racial lines? When the recorded fatal shooting of a fleeing man in South Carolina brought instant condemnation by whites and blacks alike, and by the most conservative as well as the most liberal commentators, that moment of mutual understanding was very fleeting, as if mutual understanding were something to be avoided, as a threat to a vision of “us against them” that was more popular. That vision is nowhere more clearly expressed than in attempts to automatically depict

whatever social problems exist in ghetto communities as being caused by the sins or negligence of whites, whether racism in general or a “legacy of slavery” in particular. Like most emotionally powerful visions, it is seldom, if ever, subjected to the test of evidence. The “legacy of slavery” argument is not just an excuse for inexcusable behavior in the ghettos. In a larger sense, it is an evasion of responsibility for the disastrous consequences of the prevailing social vision of our times, and the political policies based on that vision, over the past half century. Anyone who is serious about evidence need only compare black communities as they evolved in the first 100 years after slavery with black communities as they evolved in the first 50 years after the explosive growth of the welfare state, beginning in the 1960s. You would be hard-pressed to find as many ghetto riots prior to the 1960s as we have seen just in the past year, much less in the 50 years since a wave of such riots swept across the country in 1965. We are told that such riots are a result of black poverty and white racism. But in fact -- for those who still have some respect for facts -- black poverty was far worse, and white racism was far worse, prior to 1960. But violent crime within black ghettos was far less. Murder rates among black males were going down -- repeat, DOWN -- during the much lamented 1950s, while it went up after the much celebrated 1960s, reaching levels more than See Sowell on 23

When you think of New Hampshire brewers, what companies come to mind? Well of course, we have a Bud plant in Merrimack and Sam Adams is everywhere. And there are now over 40 breweries of all sizes around the state. But one of the more popular beers you’ll find on the shelves or in restaurants and bars has a friendlyfaced logo on every label. Of course, I am speaking about Smuttynose Brewing Company at 105 Towle Farm Road, in Hampton, NH. The address is important because they have just finished a major renovation to their new brewing headquarters. They have free tours which is probably the most informative in the entire state. And of course at the end of the tour, you can taste their lovely creations... a lot! It is definitely worth a visit. You can find out

Worst? Not Republicans, They Do Nothing! Number one question for me is who is looking out for the safety of our grandchildren? It isn’t Barack Hussein by Niel Young Advocates Columnist Obama, Congress, or the Senate! Is it Attorney General Loretta Lynch? Will the answer be: a National Military Force, and not our local and state police? You probably do not agree with me that “Martial Law” is a strong possibility? When I read that Hussein Obama might like to return to Community Organizing that tells me that if he is not through ruling the USA, BHO will just do it from a golf course somewhere within. He knows where within is. He took the oath to protect our country from enemies both foreign, and within. If you were with me in 2008 you know BHO is a dangerous man with no respect for OUR country, the U.S. Constitution, White Americans, Christians, law enforcement, and our military. Thanks to a report at National Review by Brenden Bordelon: Health-care experts call it D.C. “insiderism” at its worst. The rumors began trickling in about a week before the scheduled vote on April 23: Republican leadership was quietly pushing senators to pull support for subpoenaing Congress’s fraudulent application to the District of Columbia’s health exchange — the document that facilitated Congress’s “exemption” from Obamacare by allowing lawmakers and staffers to keep their employer subsidies. They see politics and self-interest at play, and they allege that Republican leaders are as invested as their Democratic counterparts in maintaining their subsidies, fraudulently obtained, while avoiding scrutiny from an overwhelm-

ingly disapproving American public. “We deserve to know who signed that application, because they are robbing taxpayers,” says MICHAEL CANNON, director of health-policy studies at the libertarian Cato Institute. The staffers who signed the fraudulent application, he says, “know who was directing them to do this. And so we have to follow the trail of breadcrumbs. This is the next breadcrumb, and whoever is farther up the trail wants to stop Vitter right here.” Voters like to believe that when they vote republicans to office that we can count on our representatives to represent US, not Mitch McConnell or John Boehner. Bordelon: “Four Republicans – Sens. Mike Enzi, James Risch, KELLY AYOTTE, and Deb Fischer – had promised to support Vitter – but that would soon change.” No need to worry about the Obama crew, after all, this is the most transparent administration, ever! Would you agree that selectmen, school board, city councils, require “eternal vigilance” Firstlook.org: “In a littlenoticed brief filed last summer, lawyers for the House of Representatives claimed that an SEC investigation of congressional insider trading should be blocked on principle, because lawmakers and their staff are constitutionally protected from such inquiries given the nature of their work. T h e legal team led by Kerry W. Kircher, who was appointed House General Counsel by Speaker John Boehner in 2011, claimed that the insider trading probe violated the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branch.” The word “principle” is being used loosely. Senator Tom Cotton (RArkansas) today released the following statement on the Iran Nuclear Agreement

Review Act: “A nuclear-arms agreement with any adversary— especially the terror-sponsoring, Islamist Iranian regime—should be submitted as a treaty and obtain a two-thirds majority vote in the Senate as required by the Constitution. President Obama wants to reverse this rule, requiring opponents to get a two-thirds vote to stop his dangerous deal. But Congress should not accept this usurpation, nor allow the president any grounds to claim that Congress blessed his nuclear deal. I will work with Republicans and Democrats to stop a dangerous deal that would put Iran on the path to obtaining a nuclear weapon.” Thomas Jefferson, letter to Spencer Roane, 1821: “The multiplication of public offices, increase of expense beyond income, growth and entailment of a public debt, are indications soliciting the employment of the pruning knife.”

The ruby throated hummingbird is one of the smallest of all North American hummingbirds. It is the most widely distributed and the only hummingbird east of the Mississippi River. If you have relatives in the west, they are entertained by over 10 different species of this unique bird. Our ruby weighs about as much as a single penny in your hand. Males and females are approximately 3 ½ inches long, the female is slightly heavier. The throat of the male often appears to be a brilliant metallic red that can take on gold or orange hues as the light changes. You can find the same reaction to light conditions on fish scales. The male ruby throated hummingbirds arrive on the breeding ground throughout most of eastern North America between late April and midMay, depending on the latitude. These dates are usually one week ahead of the females. Territories are established based on natural food supplies. Males are extremely diligent in defending their territories from all competitors, including other males, females and even moths. Of course, all bets are off once the females start arriving. Then, the courtship begins. The male grabs the female’s attention with a pendulum-like flight pattern, so that the sunlight bounces off his brilliant throat. If interested, the female will perch and watch the entire show. If successful,

Ruby Throated Hummingbird the pair will mate and off she goes, never to have contact with the male again. Love and leave ‘em! Since no bonding occurs, the male is free to roam his territory and mate with another female. For the female, however, her work has just begun. The female ruby throated hummingbird chooses the nest site, builds the nest in about one week, and takes sole responsibility for all parental duties. The male is never involved in any aspect of his offspring. These tiny jewels prefer wooded areas that are either strictly deciduous or mixed with conifers. The nest is about the size of a walnut and is extremely difficult for the human eye to locate. It consists of plant fibers such as thistle or dandelion down, held together by spider silk. The outside is usually covered with lichens. The female usually lays two white, bean-sized eggs which she incubates for two weeks. These nestlings fledge in approximately 18-22 days. The next time you see these winged ruby jewels in your yard, take a moment to reflect on the bird’s upbringing and you will appreciate its beauty even more. Enjoy your birds.

be NCAA men’s hoop champs, but North Carolina’s Tar Heels are cooler. Ohio Northern University has the Polar Bears. Huh? Must be extremely northern Ohio. Ohio State University’s Buckeyes are named after a flowery shrub, that Ohioans claim is really a tree, which still makes the nickname almost as bad as Sycamores. Sports squads at Rhode Island School of Design are known as the Nads. Go Nads! Saint Peter’s College in New Jersey has

the Peacocks and Peahens—obviously genderized. And if Notre Dame can have the Fighting Irish, then Yeshiva University can have the Maccabees, aka the Fighting Jews! And speaking of fighting, consider Ohio Valley University’s Fighting Scots or Ohio Wesleyan University Battlin’ Bishops. Oklahoma has the Sooners—named after cheats who claimed land in Oklahoma before they were supposed to. OU players may as well claim to be the Oklahoma Cheaters.

Apparently “Golden is Good,” as in Golden Bulls (Johnson C. Smith University), Golden Tornadoes (Geneva College), Golden Gusties (Gustavus Adolphus College), Golden Eagles (John Brown University), Golden Flashes (Kent State University),Golden Hurricane (Tulsa), or the Golden Tigers (Tuskegee University). Finalists … After extensive review and considerable thought, the finalists in the nickname competition included the Green Terror (McDaniel College), the

Prairie Wolves (Nebraska Wesleyan University), the Pygmies (New Mexico Mining & Technology), the Hardrockers (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology), the Mad Hatters (Stetson University), the Hokies (Virginia Tech), and the Horned Frogs (Texas Christian University). But ultimately, the clear winner had to be the Flaming Smelts of Shimer College. What could possibly top a Flaming Smelt? Sports Quiz Real baseball fans know

that Babe Ruth famously hit 714 career home runs. But how many career home runs did the two people (Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds) who broke his record hit? (Answer follows) Born Today ... That is to say, sports figures born on May 14 include baseball slugger Tony Perez (1942) and NFL defensive tackle Tony Siragusa (1967). nal IPA, Kindest Find. The label is quite interesting as is this awesome brew. Deep red in color, it professes a large maltforward presence, but quickly tells you about the hop character just behind. They use four malt types and four hops; Magnum, Zeus, Centennial and new arrival, Falconer’s Flight. On first full pour into a pint glass, a medium sized tan head appears and remains. With reminders of grapefruit and rock candy, the sweetness stays against the bittering. But to some,

the bittering may win out. Serving temperature has a lot to do with your impression of the hop character; warmer and the hop is right there. Cooler and the sweetness speaks. At 9.0% ABV and 65 IBU, the imperial part speaks for itself. You will appreciate the overall balance of this 22 oz beer and want to sample it again (and again...). So, this short series will probably be more fun than first realized after tasting this gem. With the many other offerings from Smuttynose,

you will always find it at Case-n-Keg, 5 Mill St, Meredith. Most on BeerAdvocate.com have rated this beer 3.50+ to 4.3 out of a score of 5. Officially, they rate this at 87 out of 100 which is a ‘very good’ notation. Smuttynose has a wild history of making beautiful brews and Kindest Find is now added to that list! Jim MacMillan is the owner of WonByOne Design of Meredith, NH, and is an avid imbiber of craft brews and a home brewer as well. Send him your recommendations and brew news to wickedbrews@weirs.com.

The tilted walls have put all kinds of stress on electrical cables. I’ve seen house fires caused by this. These same stresses may have put strain on plumbing water and drain lines that are now ticking time bombs. Fuel lines could be stretched and hazardous. My suggestion, assuming your local zoning laws permit this, is to tear down

your existing building and invest in a new camp house kit home. At the end of the day you’ll save money by doing this, given the many unknowns and latent defects lurking in the walls, under the floors and under the roof. With a new camp house, you’ll get the utmost in safety, you’ll have low utility bills and you’ll have a splendid retreat that will bring a smile to your face each time you visit to spend time in the forest. I’m fortunate to live next door to people that have similar camp houses. I’ve

seen the dread that some have who are constantly dealing with rotted wood, a never-ending list of tasks facing them and constant drain of money. I’ve also got neighbors whose camps are new or newer, and each weekend they come up and immediately jump into their kayaks or get out their fishing poles. Their camp houses are comfortable and cozy and look superb. If you decide to scrap the existing camp and go with a new kit, be sure to make great decisions about the room sizes and what you want in the new structure. Think about 9-foot ceilings, generous overhangs and how your family might grow as time goes on. You want to make sure there’s enough room for all when everyone sits down to enjoy a meal and people are not cramped. Be sure you keep in mind floor surfaces made to take abuse or not show dirt or wear. A camp is a camp, not a museum. Think about rustic materials that will look fantastic. I also urge you to give serious consideration to radiant floor heating. It’s so comfortable in the winter, and you’ll never regret having it. Think about lowmaintenance everything because you want to enjoy your time you spend there. Stay focused on what you want to do when you’re at the camp. Let that be your North Star as you make your final decision.

double what they had been before. Most black children were raised in two-parent families prior to the 1960s. But today the great majority of black children are raised in oneparent families. Such trends are not unique to blacks, nor even to the United States. The welfare state has led to remarkably similar trends among the white underclass in England over the same period. Just read “Life at the Bottom, by Theodore Dalrymple, a British physician who worked in a hospital in a white slum neighborhood. You cannot take any people, of any color, and exempt them from the requirements of civilization -- including work, behavioral standards, personal responsibility and all the other basic things that the clever intelligentsia disdain -- without ruinous consequences to them and to society at large. Non-judgmental sub-

sidies of counterproductive lifestyles are treating people as if they were livestock, to be fed and tended by others in a welfare state -- and yet expecting them to develop as human beings have developed when facing the challenges of life themselves. One key fact that keeps getting ignored is that the poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits every year since 1994. Behavior matters and facts matter, more than the prevailing social visions or political empires built on those visions. ence between “getting by and doing well.

Through the ETC, businesses can voluntarily direct some of their profits to private, non-profit scholarship organizations that provide money to help educate students from families earning up to 300 percent of the poverty level. These K-12 scholarships improve student achievement and reduce inequalities inherent in our Zip Code-based public system. While this program is relatively new to the Granite State, similar programs have a track record of success in other states, including Arizona, Florida, Virginia, and Georgia. This investment in education puts businesses in the role of actively providing opportunities for students to learn more, do more, and become more.

How Does the Education Tax Credit Work?

New Hampshire businesses can receive a substantial 85% Education Tax Credit from the State of New Hampshire against the business profits tax and/or the business enterprise tax when donating pre-tax profits to registered 501(c)3 scholarship organizations. When combined with the federal tax deduction, total tax savings can be more then 90%. This puts businesses in the driver’s seat, controlling how their profits will be used to improve the state’s economic future.

Education Tax Credits are awarded to businesses January through June on a first-come, first-served basis until the cap in credits is reached. Businesses are encouraged to submit the Education Tax Credit Application by June 2015 and scholarship organizations can assist businesses and accountants on completing the application.
What Does This Mean for New Hampshire?

Our state is on the wrong side of the demographic curve. Our population is aging faster than we can retain and attract the young, working families upon which businesses

depend. We are already one of the oldest states in the nation demographically, and unless we turn around this trend, we will pay a high price in lost economic development.

The ETC scholarship program is one key step on the road to a more robust economy. By giving businesses a choice in how their profits are invested, and giving parents a meaningful choice in how best to educate their children, the ETC puts decision-making authority where it belongs. Parents have a personal stake in their children’s education, and businesses have a stake in developing the future workforce. But having a stake doesn’t always translate into being able to take action. The Education Tax Credit program empowers parents and business leaders to achieve their common goal of educating youth and preparing them for success in the working world. Harnessing the power of this “dynamic duo is the win-win scenario many of our children need to reach their potential, and in so doing, help all of us achieve ours.

Kate Baker is the Executive Director of the Network for Educational Opportunity, the first approved scholarship organization in the state that has implemented the ETC program.

i4UFQ CZ 4UFQw "QQSPBDI $BO &BTF &TUBUF QMBOOJOH 1SPDFTT Like many people, you may enjoy investing. After all, it can be invigorating to put away money for your future, follow the performance of your investments and track the progress you’re making toward your longterm goals, such as a comfortable retirement. However, you might be less excited about doing estate planning, dreading the perceived time, effort and cost. Yet, you can make the entire process more manageable by breaking it up into specific tasks. What are these tasks? Everyone’s needs are different, but here are a few suggestions that may be applicable to your situation: t 1VSDIBTF MJGF JOTVSBODF If something were to happen to you, would your family be able to stay in the house? Would your children be able to go to college? You should have sufficient life insurance to take care of these and other essential needs. You might hear about various “formulas for how much insurance you should purchase, but you may be better off by working with a financial professional — someone who can evaluate your assets, goals and family situation, and then recommend an appropriate level of coverage. t %SBX VQ ZPVS XJMM For most people, a will is probably the most essential estate-planning document. Regardless of the size of your estate, you need a will to ensure that your assets and personal belongings will be distrib-

uted according to your wishes. If you die intestate (without a will), your belongings will be distributed to your “heirs as defined by state laws — and these distributions may not be at all what you had in mind. t $POTJEFS B MJWJOH USVTU Depending on your situation, you may need to go beyond a will when drawing up your estate plans. For example, you might want to create a living trust, which can allow your assets to go directly to your heirs, avoiding the public, time-consuming and expensive process of probate. A living trust offers other benefits, too, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn more about this estate-planning tool. t $IFDL CFOFĕDJBSZ EFTJHOBUJPOT The beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k), are powerful and can even supersede the instructions left in your will. So it’s in your best interests to make sure you’ve got the right people listed as your beneficiaries. Over time, you may need to update these designations to reflect changes in your family situation. t .BLF ĕOBM BSSBOHFNFOUT Whenever you pass away, it will be a stressful time for your loved ones. To ease their burden, consider establishing a “payable-on-death account at your bank, and then funding this account to pay for your funeral and related expenses. t 4IBSF ZPVS QMBOT The most comprehensive estate plan in the world may not be of much value if nobody knows of its existence. Share your plans with your loved ones and heirs. It’s important that everyone knows their roles in carrying out your wishes. When dealing with any estate-planning issues, you’ll want to consult with your legal and tax professionals. And by taking a step-by-step approach, you can keep the process moving forward — without feeling that you’re being overwhelmed.

Europhobia remains a key challenge for many Conservatives who have a love/hate relationship with the European Union (EU) and especially some of its uber-bureaucratic trappings. Despite the often nanny state rulings from Brussels, Britain is far better being inside and an active player in Europe than she would be looking across the Channel with an “I told you so” pique. A referendum on the UK EU membership may be in the cards by 2017. David Cameron is the first Tory Prime Minister to win-reelection since Margaret Thatcher. Yet Cameron is no true-blue Thatcherite; this is more the government of Tory-lite. On the one hand since winning in

2010, the Conservatives have admirably cut government spending from nearly 46% of GDP to 40.7%. Some of the bloated bureaucracy and inefficient National Health Service have been trimmed. Yet, the government still needs to create the conditions to revitalize the anemic postrecession economy for all people, not just successful entrepreneurs. Over the past few years, I have been appalled at the Cameron coalition government defense cutbacks reducing the size and punch of the British military. Reckless reductions in the Royal Air Force (RAF) have crippled a proud institution. Britain’s role in the world is no less important. As a stanch American ally (though the Obama Administration seems not to notice) and as a key player in the United Nations with its permanent seat on the UN Security Council, the UK still punches politically above its weight and size. Britain proudly remains a major donor of Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) to needy countries. The Conservative victory comes on the 70th anniversary of VE Day, the victory over Nazism in Europe in which a Conservative Prime Minister Winston Churchill played so vital a role. But that was another era. Mr. Cameron is heading back to 10 Downing Street after all. We wish him well, but now he must deliver. This may be tougher challenge than the election. John J. is within our grasp but we need to first identify what each community needs may be within the life movement. CHAMP can then assist in finding positive and powerful ways to promote life endeavors within our communities after specifically addressing those needs. As the organizer for these events, I will offer a short presentation followed by an open dialogue and discussion promoting Life Principles in an upbeat and loving message. It is important to understand CHAMP is NOT a political initiative and will center only on the cultural aspects of furthering an active and positive life message within our local communities. NHRTL believes it is by “changing hearts and minds” that we can make a significant difference in the social/ cultural direction of our communities with regard to life principles. If you would like to participate in a Luncheons for Life! event, please contact NHRTL at (603)2308136. There is no charge for this event and NHRTL will be happy to assist your group in any way possible. Being a “social” kind of gal, I would be most happy to meet with your group to promote bringing an optimistic and encouraging message of Life to your community. Because changing hearts and minds is what NHRTL is all about! Jane is an activist and former NH House Representative and can be reached at jane4newhampshire@gmail.com
