Home for the Holidays, Rollinsford/South Berwick Parade SOUTH BERWICK In an exciting and unprecedented move, two cherished holiday traditions, “Home for the Holidays” and the “Rollinsford/South Berwick Christmas Parade,” are coming together to create an extraordinary daylong celebration that promises to bring the community closer than ever. Mark calendars for Saturday, December 2, as South Berwick transforms into a winter wonderland for this combined event. Since 2004, SoBo Central’s Home for the Holidays has been a cherished tradition in South Berwick, bringing the community together for festive activities and family-friendly fun. The Rollins-

ford/South Berwick Christmas Parade has been a staple since 1984, offering a delightful spectacle of holiday-themed floats, music, and goodwill. This year, both events are joining forces to create a memorable day for everyone to enjoy. The primary goal of the event is to serve as a unifying force, binding the community together in the spirit of the festive season. With a lineup of activi-

ties, entertainment, and celebrations throughout the day, this event is designed to foster a sense of togetherness and showcase the best of South Berwick. The volunteer event organizers are excited to emphasize the significance of supporting local businesses and promoting economic growth in the downtown area. Home for the Holidays and the Rollinsford/South Berwick Christmas Parade have

both been instrumental in driving business and commerce in the region. By combining forces, the event aims to revitalize downtown South Berwick and create a thriving environment for local vendors and shops. “We recognize the incredible legacies of Home for the Holidays and the Rollinsford/South Berwick Christmas Parade,” said event organizer Greg Ouellette. “Our mission is to honor

these traditions while building a stronger, more interconnected community. We’re thrilled to bring these two beloved events together for an unforgettable day of joy and celebration.” Com mu n it y members, families, and visitors are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in this one-of-a-kind event. Get ready for a day full of entertainment, delicious food, holiday shopping, and, of course, the much-anticipated Christmas parade. Together, everyone will create lasting memories and embrace the festive spirit of the season. Highlights from the day to See HOLIDAY on page 14 . . .

42nd Annual Christmas Prelude Begins November 30 KENNEBUNKPORT The 42nd annual Christmas Prelude will soon see the town decked out in twinkling lights and greenery. A buoydecked Christmas tree sits at its center, resembling a Christmas movie come to life. “Each year, Prelude gets better,” said Kennebunkport Business Association (KBA) President Ashley Padget of Alisson’s Restaurant. “All of our traditional favorites return, like the caroling at the Franciscan Monastery, tree lightings, hat parade, and more, and are joined by even more magical events like the Lucky Pup Rescue Adopt-

A-Tree Festival, and a pre-tree lighting party at Bradbury Bros. on the first Friday.” Santa’s arrival by lobster boat is a traditional event that got bigger and better and last year, was re-imagined with its move to the Nonantum Resort. The event will be back at the inn this year. “We are super excited to have Santa return this year,” said Nonantum’s Tina Gordon. “He’s getting on the boat 12:30 p.m. He will go up and down river, landing at the Nonantum at 1 p.m., where the party will be underway!” Also returning this

WELLS Norton Lights began in 2008 from a friendly, family holiday light display competition. The Norton family, along with their friends, neighbors, and members of the Wells community, all pitch in every season to produce a glittering annual display to be enjoyed by all. Norton Lights began partnering with Make-A-Wish Maine in 2009, when sons Ryan and Reed Norton were just nine and 12 years-old. Now adults, the brothers still spend their Christmas Eves outside directing traffic, continuing the beloved holiday tradition. The goal is simple: spread cheer, one light at a time. “Ogunquit Spirit of Giving” Collecting for Children

OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Spirit of Giving Committee welcomes all to join in their 19th year of bringing gifts and cheer to needy children throughout the state. Again this year, Spirit of Giving supports the children of two Mainebased organizations: Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine and the Frannie Peabody Center. Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine provides support to families throughout all of the regions of the state. The families all have one thing in common: that they have opened their

hearts and homes to children who need loving and safe shelter. Frannie Peabody Center is Maine’s HIV/AIDS service organization. The children af-

filiated with this program are touched by HIV in some way, whether it be a family member or caregiver with this expensive condition. Ogunquit Spirit of Giving provides gifts to children associated with these programs. In the past, sponsors have purchased, wrapped, and donated specific gifts requested by the children. With an average donation of $50 per child, the group has sponsored between 600 and 650 children in each of the past few years, growing significantly from the 88 children sponsored in 2004. Presents are then gathered at the gift “Collection Party” which will be held this year on Sunday, December 3, 4-6 p.m. at MaineStreet Bar, 195 Main Street, Ogunquit. Sponsors stop in see the masses of gifts for children from throughout the state, piled around the many trees in the room. Child and family sponsor assignments have already begun, but there are still several needy children to assign. To learn more

“Fill The Trough” Toy and Food Drive at Bogdan Farm BERWICK Since 1997, Chuck and Pamela Bogdan have hosted a Christmas light display every December at their farm at 6 Hubbard Road in Berwick. The display includes singing faces and singing trees that dance to Christmas music, along with reindeer, penguins, peppermint canes, and so much more! This year, the Bogdans are hosting a two-hour special event on Saturday, December 2, 6-8 p.m. The barn will be open during that time, and the horses will be waiting to meet and greet the public! The goal that evening is to fill their troughs with toy and food donations, which will go directly to area food banks and charity events. The donations are urgently needed this year, and the troughs are currently empty. Chuck and Pamela will have maple syrup for sale this year, bottled in unique and festive bottles and containers, a perfect gift for the holidays. The public is invited to stop by and show their appreciation for this free family event by donating either a toy or a nonperishable food item. Donations will go directly to support Toys for Tots and area food pantries. The thoughtfulness and generosabout Ogunquit Spirit of Giving and how to sponsor a child or family, visit www.ogunquitgiving.com.

“Ten Piscataqua Writers 2024” Book Launch and Signing YORK Come meet and greet the ten writers, editors, and crew involved in the making of “Ten Piscataqua Writers 2024” at the York Public Library, on Thursday, November 30, 6-8 p.m. A reception for the writers will be held at the library during this time, and refreshments will be served. “Ten Piscataqua Writers 2024” is the second in a series of paperback anthologies that brings attention to outstanding writers living and working in the Piscataqua River’s watershed. Most anthologies are all of a form: essays, short stories, poems. This anthology is a mix, with each of the authors contributing a chapter’s worth of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. The featured writers this year are: Richard Foerster, Laura Pope, Amy Sauber, Mark DeCarteret, Nico Sloss, Andrew Mitchell, Nancy Wheaton, Pat Spalding, Tim Horvath, and Mimi White. Ten Piscataqua publishes books for the regional community to discover and celebrate its local genius, both established and emerging. Crowdfunding backers can bring their own copies to the event to be signed, and copies will be available to purchase at the event. For more information, email editor@tenpiscataqua.com.

~ Obituaries ~

John (Jack) R Cullen, 93 YORK – John (Jack) Cullen was received into the arms of his Lord on Wednesday, September 13, after a short illness from cancer at the Gosnell House Hospice facility in Scarborough, peacefully and surrounded by family. Jack was predeceased in death by all seven of his siblings: Mary, Kay, Jeanne, Larry, Joe, Frank, and Jerry; his adoring

wife of 61 years, Madeleine (Maddie); their loving son, John; his nephews Christopher Brine, David and Peter Bruno, and Christopher and Robert Pattison. Jack was born and raised in Woburn, MA, along with his seven siblings in a cozy home on Campbell Street, where he developed his unique, witty sense of humor. After graduating from Woburn High School, he began his lifelong, strong work ethic working several jobs, including the Murray Leather Tannery next door to his home. He joined the Marine Corps, following several of his older brothers into military service, and shipped out to serve during the Korean War. In 1951, Jack married Madeleine Brine. After an Honorable Discharge from the Marines, he and Maddie, along with their young daughter, Virginia, settled for a time back in Massachusetts, where their son John was born.

Jack secured a job with Aeronautical Icing Research Laboratories, doing extreme weather testing for jet engines atop Mt Washington, and moved the family to Jackson, NH. Their son Kevin was born in North Conway, NH during the five-year span Jack was working on Mt Washington. He worked a two-week-on, oneweek-off schedule, in some of the most brutal weather conditions anywhere on earth. After his time on the mountain, the family moved to Windsor, CT where Jack obtained a job with GE as a Technical Field Rep in the jet engine division, a position he held for 33 years. His job took him to far-flung parts of the world, from the northern reaches of Canada to the tip of Chile, and to Morocco. In 1967, he spent six months in Vietnam, assigned to the USS Princeton aircraft carrier that serviced Marine Corps helicopter engines. He also spent time at Marble Mountain. In 1969, the family moved to Ottawa, Canada, on a GEsanctioned one year contract to the Canadian Armed Forces. After many yearly contract extensions, he was again reassigned to another foreign military, this time in Lima, Peru in 1976. He and Maddie spent four years learning Spanish, traveling the country and partaking in the rich cultural heritage of Peru. Moving back to Canada, they settled near Montreal, where Jack continued to work for GE. They again dove into their

new surroundings and strove to learn French. On a whim, Jack and Maddie purchased a rundown, 4,000 sq.ft., log home located an hour north of Montreal, where they would spend weekends with friends and family. Over many years they painstakingly restored and remodeled the home, ultimately moving there to live full time for many years. In 1993, they moved back to Ottawa, where Jack retired from GE. On a trip to Sarasota, FL in the mid-1990s to visit Jack’s brothers Frank and Jerry and their wives Dorothy and Pat, Jack and Maddie bought a condo on Siesta Key. After several years, they moved to Siesta Key full time, enjoying deep friendships with many neighbors, sunsets and daily walks on the beach. Jack was president of the condo association for a year, and both he and Maddie were involved with activities at Bay Tree Club condo and with the local Tai Chi Society. They could often be seen doing Tai Chi by the Bay behind their condo. Jack had keys to most everyone’s condo at his building, as he was always checking in on properties for folks who were out of town. Jack took up golfing in Florida, and played with the same g roup, including his brother, Jerry, 2-3 times a week for 20 years. He played his last round in April of this year, at 93 years old. A video taken of him that month shows Jack knocking his drive down the middle of the fairway, playing some of

the best golf of his life. After Maddie’s passing in 2012, Jack developed a friendship with Mary Powers, another resident of Bay Tree, whose husband, Bob, had also passed away. Their friendship developed into a deep and loving 10 plus year relationship. Although they kept separate condos, Jack and Mary spent much of their time together. Jack’s call to Mary every morning would begin with “How you doing, kid?,” as he affectionately called her. The two would lunch every day at Mary’s, followed by a late afternoon walk to the beach, and then dinner, alternating every other night between their two places. This was usually followed by a few bites of sea salt, caramel truffle frozen yogurt. Every night ended with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. For four months in the summer, they would head up to York Beach, where Mary owned a summer home. There they would entertain visiting friends and family throughout the laid back summer months. Jack would pretend to like the lobster dinners that Mary loved because Mary’s joy made Jack very happy. Jack had a long history of community service to many religious and other service groups, including The Ottawa Food Bank, The Knights of Columbus, The Cursillo Movement, The Sarasota Tai Chi Society and many Catholic Church organizations. Jack will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Ginny and her husband Garth; his loving son, Kevin and his wife Michelle; his adoring grandchildren, Sarah and Monica Doody, Marie and Philip Cullen, and Philip’s daughter Octavia; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. However, Jack will especially be missed by his loving, long-time partner, Mary Powers; her sons, Keith and Stephen, Keith’s wife Kathy, and Mary’s grandchildren, Lynne and David. In lieu of donations, Jack’s family asks to spread a little more love in the world by performing a random act of kindness, as Jack was known to do throughout his life. And take time to enjoy a sunset with those you love.

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Meet our sweet pup of the week, Roux! Roux is a fivemonth-old mixed breed puppy from an overcrowded shelter in Louisiana. Roux is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. Just a perfect little boy, looking for his perfect forever family! We would like to take this opportunity to give many thanks to our donors, adopters, fosters and volunteers this past Thanksgiving week. Without you we could not do it! We would also like to thank the many donations brought to us. Our drop box has been filled many times and we are grateful!

WELLS We are mindf ul, especially at Thanksgiving time, of everything we are thankful for. Safe Haven is truly grateful for all who support their ongoing mission, making it possible for volunteers to do the work they do for the homeless cats in area communities. Safe Haven is also grateful to the team at the Weekly Sentinel for giving them a platform to speak for the animals. The shelter’s volunteers love to tell their stories and share their mission. The staff at Safe Haven remains dedicated to rescuing Maine’s cats from dangerous and dreadful situations. Safe Haven does not turn their backs on cats who have medical issues, are elderly, considered undesirable or are feral. They take the rescue work seriously. Safe Haven is a Maine-based nonprofit organi-

zation, and believes in their efforts to help the state’s animals. These efforts cost money in vet bills, due to the extensive medical and surgical expenses incurred with some of the intakes. The shelter cannot do this work without funding, and certainly not without people available to adopt. And so, they also thank all who have supported the organization. Caring for ferals is labor intensive for the cat caregivers and cat health managers, as these heroes care for those cats who can often be critically ill. Many of Safe Haven’s cats require pre-

Safe Haven cannot adequately express enough gratitude to their volunteers, who care for these rescued felines as they do their own! The hours, tears, the cleaning, the worry and sometimes the broken hearts they devote to Safe Haven are immeasurable. But especially lately, the shelter has seen see more cats abandoned, cats needing medical attention, and cats that were discarded due to behavioral issues or require more attention than their people are willing to give. These cats must go somewhere! When they land at Safe Haven, sometimes the volunteers do not know who is luckier, the cats or them, because they love saving the babies. The volunteers at Safe Haven hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

cise medication regimens, and ferals often require months of socializing. This is the work that defines Safe Haven’s no-kill mission. This week’s pick is Obie, a vivid example of the condition of some incoming animals. This feral cat had been shot, and had several fractured teeth and advanced ear infections. Obie is doing great now, and will soon be available for adoption!

Health & Fitness DEA Briefs Collins on Illegal Chinese Marijuana Operations, Opioid Epidemic, Meth Use in Maine WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Susan Collins recently received a briefing from Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Anne Milgram on efforts to address illegal Chinese marijuana operations, combat the opioid epidemic, and fight the rise of crystal meth use in Maine. “ No c o m m u n i t y i s immune from the opioid epidemic, and I commend the men and women of the DEA for their work to combat illicit opioid trafficking and distribution. While we continue to target deadly opioids, we must not lose sight of the need to protect our communities from other emerging threats. The

significant increase of crystal meth seizures in Maine – from 3 kilograms in 2021 to 72 kilograms in 2022 – is incredibly shocking,” said Senator Collins. “Administrator Milgram and I also discussed the recent reporting on the illegal Chinese marijuana growing operations in Maine and the potential harm they pose to our public health and national security. We must put an end to these criminal enterprises that are flooding our State and infiltrating our rural communities. I will continue to push the Department of Justice, including the DEA, to work with state and local law enforcement and shut down these illegal operations.”

In August, Senator Collins and the Maine Delegation wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland requesting information on what the Department of Justice is doing to shut down the illegal Chinese marijuana growing operations. Following an investigation by Maine Wire that uncovered more than 100 foreignowned drug houses throughout rural Maine earlier this month, Senator Collins renewed her call for federal action, advocating for robust federal measures and increased collaboration to address and eliminate the threat posed by these illegal growing operations. Berwick Academy Girls Varsity Soccer Update

BERWICK The Ber wick Academy (BA) Bulldogs qualified for the NEPSAC Class C Tournament and played as the 5th seed in the quarterfinal game against Greens Farms Academy at Deerfield Academy on Wednesday, November 15. They fought hard until the end, with a 0-0 score and 5-4 PKs, losing to Greens Farms. With 14 minutes left in the first half, Jessica Wojdak (West Newbury, MA) made

a diving save and tackle at a critical moment, preventing Greens Farms from scoring. Seven minutes later, the Bulldogs had a chance at a goal when senior Ginger Friedman (North Hampton, NH) carried the ball up the field, and passed to Blake Metcalf (Scarborough) who took a shot wide, just missing the frame. In the 70th minute, Greens Farms had a chance to score but did not, when their shot hit the crossbar and goalkeeper Alexa

Garcia (Dover, NH) saved the shot with a front smother. All of the Bulldog players gave it their all on the turf but could not secure a goal. Then, under the pressure of penalty kicks, they lost by one. BA finished with a record of 12-5-4 on the season and should be proud of their consistent hard work and their dedication. Score: Berwick 0, Greens Farms Academy 0, 5-4 PK (GF Academy wins in PKs).
