These imported textiles inspired American and British printed and embroidered counterparts, showing an international appreciation for materials and motifs.

“In any fair system of justice or public proceeding, it’s required to provide evidence of wrongdoing before a verdict can be rendered – innocent until proven guilty. The process you have undertaken turns this principle on its head. How would you like to be the defendant in a process where the standard is guilty until proven innocent?” the Maine leaders conclude.

and skills. The merit badge program plays a major role in the scouting advancement program, and participation can begin as soon as a scout registers with a troop. Each scout can explore topics from American Business to Woodcarving, as they have the interest. The boys decided that they wanted to learn what Harbormaster Forrest Brenske, does. They had the opportunity to look around the town docks and then ask questions. They were interested in learning about the town dock system as well as the Harbormaster boats and the Harbormaster’s duties. The scouts asked questions such as, “What’s your favorite part of your job?” and “How many boat slips does York have?” The experience was enlightening and beneficial for all.

5. What steps is Seafood Watch prepared to take to remedy the significant harm they have already inflicted on

does the new report fail to take these actions into consideration?

The Merit Badge process is as follows: First a scout decides which specific merit badge of the hundreds available he will choose to work on. The scout must obtain approval from the Scoutmaster before beginning to work on the badge of his choice. The Scoutmaster will then identify possible merit badge counselors. The scout will identify another scout, a buddy, or a family member who will be his partner and will attend all meetings with the counselor, following safe scouting guidelines. Next the scout will contact the counselor to begin the badge work. The counselor reviews the requirements with the scout, and they decide on projects to

The final step is for the Merit Badge Counselor to certify completion of all requirements. Then the merit bade patch will be presented at the next troop Court of Honor. For more info contact Brenda Gamache, Advancement Chair Boy Scout Troop 301, York, 228-264-0937. “You have appointed yourself Judge, Jury, and Executioner of the Maine lobster industry – ignoring clear facts, and not meeting even the most basic burden of proof before coming to a conclusion.”In the group, Senator Angus King, Governor Janet Mills, Senator Susan Collins, and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Goldenall all stated “This decision is extremely disappointing, to say the least. The National Marine Fisheries Service has consistently interpreted the data in the most conservative way possible, without accounting for the impact of ship strikes on whales and whale entanglements in Canadian snow crab gear, putting all of the burden for right whale protection squarely on the shoulders of Maine’s lobster fishery. Maine lobstermen care about the endangered right whale and have undertaken substantial actions to protect them at great personal expense; but the Federal government’s regulations are simply not based in sound science or proven fact. This federal court decision, so out of touch with reality, adds insult to injury to an industry that supports the lives and livelihoods of thousands of Maine families. We will continue to stand with the Maine lobstermen and confer with the Maine Lobsterman’s Association concerning next steps.”

the Maine lobster industry?

3. Claiming that any fishery with rope in the water as an equal threat to right whales undermines efforts by Maine lobstermen to make gear safer, as well as Seafood Watch’s purpose to distinguish between fisheries working to improve sustainability measures and those that aren’t. Why does Seafood Watch use a blanket assessment rather than putting in the effort to be specific and accurate?

When a boy enters the world of scouting, he not only has rank advancements, he also has numerous merit badges to choose from. The Boy Scouts from Troop 301 in York have been working on a merit badge called “Citizens in the Community.” Jasper Trafton, Tegan Witham, Devin Conte, Corbett Witham and Jasper Witham have all put time into learning about the town they live in, York. Teachers stretch to fill the gap between school funding and students’ needs. Often with limited resources, teachers are accomplishing incredible projects, engaging a variety of students, and bringing outdoor learning to new extents across the state. Supporting teachers and schools in the pursuit of outdoor learning is a critical piece of MEEA’s mission as the organization strives to enhance and amplify the efforts of individuals and organizations that are building environmental awareness, fostering appreciation and understanding of the environment, and taking action towards creating equitable and

The shift to outdoor learning during the pandemic has offered schools the opportunity to reimagine their classrooms and the lessons they teach. The Maine Environmental Education Association (MEEA) supported this opportunity by distributing close to $200,000 during the 2021-2022 school year, funding 160 schools across the state in all 16 counties. Teachers used these funds to teach students about the natural world, to provide them with skills that enable their independence, and to ensure more time outside.

Teacher Grace Jacobs saw how important this class was to students: “This time outside has become something sacred to our students and is looked forward to with excitement. Students are much more at ease, and there is a heightened sense of connection amongst them when they are playing and learning outdoors. Learning outdoors helps develop a sense of place. Multiple studies have shown that the overconsumption of ultraprocessed food and skimping on exercise can result in adverse health complications, leading to lower life expectancy. A recent study revealed that eating junk food on a regular basis can be linked to advancing cognitive decline, in addition to a variety of health complications. Yet many continue to eat fast food despite being fully aware of this information.Arecent survey conducted by DrugGenius.com, a provider of reliable, evidence-based information about prescription medications, asked respondents hypothetically, how many years of their lives they would be willing to forgo if it meant they could continue to eat unhealthily.

The states in which people were willing to forgo the greatest number of years to keep eating junk foods were Hawaii, Montana, and North Dakota. People in these states would be willing to trade in 12 years of their life in order to maintain their fast-food diets.

Another study conducted by the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development found that communities with a higher volume of fast-food restaurants have a shorter life expectancy. Research from The University of Michigan discovered that eating one hotdog can shave off 36 minutes of life. One chicken wing can claim 3 minutes and 30 seconds. The good news, however, is that it is also possible to add years by making more nutritious dietary choices and implementing healthier lifestyle habits. Snacking on a handful of nuts and seeds adds 26 minutes, while a serving of salmon can add 16 minutes. When it comes to choosing between a hotdog and a handful of nuts, however, many will still pick the hypothetical hotdog, despite knowing it could reduce their lifespan.Thesurvey also discovered that 27% believe that moderate consumption of fast food has health benefits. And when

asked what kind of fast food they believe has the greatest benefits, 20% believed tacos or burritos were healthiest (possibly because of the lettuce and tomatoes), 8% believed it to be burgers and fries (potatoes are technically a vegetable), 11% thought it was pizza, and 8% believed a bucket of fried chicken wings had the most health benefits. Forty-five percent thought a foot-long sandwich had the most health benefits, because some sandwiches can come loaded with healthy, fresh vegetables and served on whole wheat

Both adults and children can reap these rewards. When cycling with young children, parents can look for flat cycling paths that will not discourage kids or require them to do more than their bodies can handle. Older children and teenagers can handle more challenging paths, and parents of children in these age groups can even consider incorporating mountain biking into their cycling routines.

NATIONWIDEU.S. Department of Agricul ture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack announced recently that the department is ac cepting applications for $100 million in grants to increase the sale and use of biofuels derived from U.S. agricultural products. The USDA is making funding available through the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentive Program (HBIIP). This program seeks to market higher blends of ethanol and biodiesel by sharing the costs to build and retrofit biofuel-re lated infrastructure such as pumps, dispensers, and stor age tanks.“Rural America is key to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and giving Americans cleaner, more affordable op tions at the pump,” Vilsack said. “Biofuels are home grown fuels. RepaymentIncome-Driven

These four plans cap payments at a percentage of income – usually between 10% and 20% – and extend repayment over 20 or 25 years. Borrowers must reapply annually by providing income and family details. Failure to do so will add unpaid interest to the balance and alter payments from income-based to an amount necessary to pay off the loan within 10 years or the end of the 20- or 25-year term.

A good option for borrowers who expect their salaries to increase over the years, payments on this plan start lower and increase over a 10-year term. It’s not the best option if you want consistent, lower payments, but you won’t have the hassle of annually reapplying like an income-driven plan.

Borrowers who work in a public service job with the government, military, public schools or nonprofits, could qualify for a forgiveness program where balances are forgiven after 10 years of payments. Other borrowers may qualify for forgiveness on some income-driven plans after making payments for 20 or 25 years. Depending on the plan, the forgiven balance may be taxable. Plus, forgiveness is not guaranteed. You still have to make your payments over several years.Even after evaluating all options, picking the best plan can remain a challenge. Nonprofit student loan counselors can help borrowers determine which repayment option fits best with their lifestyles. Online assistance also is available 24/7. Other initiatives have targeted efficiency upgrades in Maine’s hospitality sector, public schools, and installation of Level 2 EV chargers in rural communities, as well as helping more Maine households save money with improved insulation and weatherization.Funds for this initiative will be used primarily on investments to reduce consumption of heating oil and propane by switching heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to high-performance heat pump systems that deliver efficient, clean heat and air

This opportunity from Efficiency Maine for towns, cities, and tribal lands of fewer than 5,000 residents is the latest in a series of energy efficiency initiatives supported by a $50 million investment from the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan.

“Through Efficiency Maine and programs like the Community Resilience Partnership, Maine communities have more options than ever to save money and reduce emissions through energy efficiency and efficient heating solutions,” said Hannah Pingree, Director of the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future and co-chair of the Maine Climate Council. “This is a winwin for communities and for taxpayers, as continued investments in efficiency will save money in the near-term, while protecting our people, economy and environment from the impacts of the climate crisis for the long-term.”

repayment process, but it can also extend the repayment terms for decades, depending on the amount of the loans.

Efficiency Maine announced this funding opportunity recently in Norridgewock, a leading example of municipal energy efficiency. The town’s fire department, airport, library, municipal garage, wastewater facility, and town offices all completed lighting projects and reduced the town’s annual electricity usage by more than 46,000 kilowatt hours,

equal to the average annual electricity usage of seven Maine homes. Norridgewock also installed heat pumps in its fire station, airport terminal, and library, saving more than $2,000 in heating fuel Applicationscosts.will be accepted until August 31, 2023, or until funds are exhausted. Accepted projects must be completed by February 28, 2024.

In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

Geraldine (Gerry) Doore Eliades, 79

NORTH BERWICK – Ger aldine (Gerry) Doore Eliades passed away peacefully at home on August 31, 2022, surrounded by family. She was 79.

The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering.

SOUTH BERWICK – Mi chael Van Etten, of South Ber wick, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at his home. Michael was born in Kittery, on

YORK – Barbara Francis Finnemore, age 95, passed away on June 11, 2022. Barbara was an amazing woman. Born on the Nubble Lighthouse on March 19, 1927, she was brought into this world to be a light for everyone she came into contact with. And that is exactly what she did. Her family shared many fond memo ries with Barbara and they will be held by her family forever.

May 20, 1955. He was the son of Kenneth and Audrey Van Etten. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Stacy, of South Berwick; son Anthony of South Berwick; son Alex of Saco; brother Kevin and his wife Linda, of Green land, NH; sister Sharon and her husband Robert, of Mendham, NJ; and sister Deborah Heiden strom of South Berwick. He also leaves behind seven nephews and two nieces. He is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Audrey. Michael worked as a self-employed drywall contrac tor for over 40 years. Throughout his retirement, he enjoyed going fishing, attending weekly card games, and playing golf with his brother, friends, and son, Alex. He also loved spending time watching movies and documen taries with his son, Anthony. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, love for his family, and his insatiable sweet tooth.

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sym pathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked ques tions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy ex tended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased.

We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

missing – that the funeral was depressing.

The funeral period provides for the expres sion of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the de ceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies.

According to Nemours KidsHealth, cooking meals together can be a great way for parents to reinforce basic math skills kids are learning at school. Older kids who don’t need such lessons can benefit from cooking with their parents by learning to prepare nutritious meals that can lay the foundation for healthy eating habits.

Harvard Medical School notes that studies have found that artistic expression can help people with depression and anxiety. Young children, including preschoolers, also can benefit from painting, which helps them develop both their fine and gross motor skills and improves hand-eye coordination. Parents of adolescents should know that painting has also been found to be a productive outlet for teenagers to express themselves, and the process of seeing a painting project through from inception to completion can boost confidence and self-esteem.

ing us, well before the next intersection, to turn right here, or keep going straight there. We were joy riding to see the Christmas lights around town. We’d slow down near a decorated home, admiring the bright white lights, the red lights, the greens and blues, the lights that came from the inflatable Santa Clauses and reindeer, the icicle lights dangling from eves, and the spotlights on Christmas wreaths on the door. To know Barbara meant to know joy in doing things with loved ones. And she had plenty of loved ones to go around.
