As for working with Denzel Washington? Well, he may be a household name to adults, but to a 9-year-old girl he was just a really nice guy.“Ididn’t really understand how much of a star he was, but my mom did,” Rhys said. “She kind of explained it to me, how amazing it is to meet him and to get that opportunity. He was just so nice. Some people that are really famous or rich, they might not be nice because they might have the money and not think that’s important. But he wasn’t like that, he was extremely nice.” That was Rhys’ first film, 30 minutes long, and rakes will be provided. Space is limited so register on www.eventbrite.com. Both activities, brought to you by Ogunquit Parks &Recreation, are free and open to all ages and abilities. For more information, find Ogunquit Parks and Recreation on Facebook.

Teen Hollywood Career with Normal Tips to Make Back-To-School Easier Annual Ogunquit Beach Sandcastle

NATIONWIDEThe back-to-school season can be overwhelming for the whole family. While there’s excitement about reuniting with friends and starting a new school year, it can be challenging for parents and kids to get back into a solid routine. To help busy families prepare mentally and physically for a return to the classroom, registered dietitian and nutritionist Dalina Soto has proBy Gina Carbone, Staff Writer W ELLSHow many kids from Maine can say they were carried in Denzel Washington’s arms at the Hollywood premiere of their own movie? How many have been chased through downtown Ogunquit by a young fan who recognized them as “The Snail Whisperer” on the TV show “Little Big Shots”? Rhys Olivia Cote is living a pretty unique life, working as a model and actress since she was 3-and-a-half years old. But the 13-year-old Wells resident is also just a regular local teen playing sports and retaining high honors at Wells Junior High School. She just happens to sometimes head out to film movies in-between eighth-grade homework assignments.Cote’s acting journey started “by a whim,” her mother, Tina Cote, said. Her parents submitted a photo to the “Live! with Kelly and Michael” “Cutest Kids” contest. The then three-and-a-half year-old Wells girl placed in the top 15. After that, Tina looked into getting her representation. Rhys now has agents and a manager in both New York and Los Angeles. At age 7, She put Maine in the spotlight with her adorable chat as a “snail whisperer” on Steve Harvey’s TV show “Little Big Shots” - an experience Rhys called “amazing”, and earning her fans all over the Pine Tree State. At nine years old, Rhys landed her first film role, opposite Oscar winner Denzel Washington in “The Equalizer 2.” The movie filmed in Boston, where Rhys went down three or four times, Tina said, to film her scenes as a kidnapped girl rescued by Washington’s lead character. What was really exciting for Rhys was that she auditioned for a smaller role, one scene where she was in the back of a car with three other girls. “But they called me back and they put me in for a bigger role, which was amazing.” That bigger, better role led her to work with Washington. He even carried her on the red carpet for the film premiere at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

vided the following three simple tips to easily incorporate into a new fall routine. Reestablish a sleep routine. Summers often consist of late nights and mornings, so it can be tough for parents and children to adjust to new weekday school hours. In the weeks before school begins, establish firm sleep and wake times for the entireItfamily.doesn’t have to happen all at once. Adjust bedtimes and morning alarms by small increments. Once a week or every few days, move the alarm time earlier until the school year sleep routine is established. This way, everyone can still enjoy those last days of summer and not be completely shocked by the switch. Double down on hydration. During the hot summer months at home, keep a close eye on the kids, ensuring they drink plenty of water as they play outside. During the school year, however, parents aren’t as able to remind them to grab a drink in between classes. Staying hydrated has its benefits. In addition to helping kids stay healthy, regular hydration can boost mood, memory and attention, according to HealthyChildren.org. To encourage kids to hydrate during the school hours, add a reusable water bottle to the “back-toschool” shopping list. Parents and kids can then pick out a fun water bottle together while shopping for school supplies. Start the day with a nutritious meal. One way to make life easier and to alleviate stress as families head into a busy fall season is to have simple, nutritious meals and snacks on hand that can be made in a pinch. Eggs are an easy, delicious and nourishing ingredient

By Susan Gallagher, Staff Writer KENNEBUNKSteve Askin had a lucky childhood. He grew up with supportive parents, a loving family, opportunity to thrive. From a young age, he was fueled by a burning desire to help others less fortunate. This led to a stint as a volunteer firefighter and other forays into community service. Kittery Trading Post, outdoor sports retailer Cabela’s, and the mall have become a few of their favorite haunts. Dinner out often follows the outings, offering quiet time to swap thoughts. A comfort level established itself early on. For Tyler, always plagued by difficulty opening up to others, the warm and easygoing Askin turned out to be the perfect sounding board for an anxious teen. “Steve is like the grandfather I never had,” Tyler says. He goes on to praise his mentor further. “He is so nice and easy to talk to.” He adds excitedly, “We have the same sense of humor!” In a classic role reversal, mentee became mentor when Tyler shared his love of Formula One racing with his “Big.” The 16-year-old proved to be a fountain of knowledge in the sport, tutoring Steve on the rules of racing, infusing him with fervor. Surprised at the depth of his own newfound interest, Steve says, “Tyler’s enthusiasm has resulted in me becoming interested in learning more and watching every race!” But interest in Formula One racing is far from the only gift the Little has bestowed upon his Big. According to Steve, Tyler has given him a new vision of life. “Tyler really opened up the world to me as seen through a younger mind’s view,” he says with a sense of awe. “I have found it so inspirational how a young person thinks and sees things with such fresh eyes.”

person. The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) organization, renowned for their work pairing adult mentors with needy children and teens, sounded ideal. To Setve’s chagrin, however, the BBBS experience would have to wait.As a busy Kennebunk veterinarian, time was in short supply. An unmarried adult with no children to reap the rewards of his giving nature, Steve threw himself into his work. He longed more than ever to make a difference in a young person’s life but his full schedule did not permit it. Finally, after 34 years in practice, retirement allowed him to fulfill his lifelong dream. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine provided the perfect conduit to his goal. In October of 2021, BBBS matched Askin with his “Little,” Tyler. The ensuing bond that formed between the two would change both of their lives. 16-year-old Tyler missed his dad. His parents’ separation was a devastating blow to the sensitive high schooler. Always an anxious child, the upheaval in his life made him even more withdrawn, unable to express his painful feelings. Although his father was present in his life, time with him was limited, leaving the boy wanting more. Now, more than ever, Tyler craved attention and yearned for someone to look up to. His mom realized that her son needed a good male role model, someone who would listen to and be there for him.Hoping to fill the void in Tyler’s life, she signed him up with BBBS, and soon the newly minted Little had his special mentor.Steve and Tyler’s bond germinated on a two-hour hike, and flourished through time spent at the movies, at the International Cryptology Museum, or just walking around and talking.

STATEWIDEA new initiative from Efficiency Maine will further expand the coverage of the state’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure by supporting installation of public EV chargers in rural communities. This is the first of a series of planned EV charging infrastructure incentives, using $8 million allocated by Maine’s Jobs and Recovery Plan. Level 2 EV chargers add 20 to 40 miles of range per hour, and are suitable for hotels, restaurants, retail stores, and public parking lots where the vehicle can recharge for an hour or longer. Eligible projects can receive 80 percent of installation costs, up to a maximum of $5,000 per Level 2 plug for networked chargers or a maximum of $2,000 for non-networked chargers. Projects at local government-owned properties and public libraries in rural areas will be eligible for a bonus incentive of $2,000 per networked plug, with the combined incentives covering up to 90 percent of the total project cost. To be eligible for funding, proposed projects must be in a publicly accessible location in a rural community as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Future funding opportunities are intended for projects in York, Cumberland and Kennebec counties. The deadline to apply is November 15. “One of our goals is to extend public EV charging throughout the state, so we are pleased to focus this round of funding on parts of the map that currently have fewer chargers,” said Michael Stoddard, executive director of the Efficiency Maine Trust. “We appreciate the financial support from the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan and The Nature Conservancy to make EV charging more accessible and affordable for rural businesses, nonprofits, towns, and tribal governments.”

Catie found a new lens on life through Steve’s view. “I get to see what things were like for Steve when he was my age,” the teen says. “Everything was so different back then, but kind of the same, too.” Tyler is grateful for the many things he has learned from his Big. Steve has taught him what to do in certain situations, like buying a car. “Not boring conversations,” Tyler is quick to add. “More like what his experience has been. He has shown me how to make good decisions.”Tyler’s mom is grateful for the difference the ten-monthlong relationship has made in her son’s life. “I’ve noticed such a change in his confidence and his mood in general,” she says. “Steve has shown him that there are men out there who enjoy his company and want to listen to him. Tyler needed that more than I even knew.” She goes on to say, “He is so much more open now. His grades have even gotten better. This experience has absolutely changed his life.” Steve agrees. “Tyler is a lot less anxious, more talkative. I really like seeing that development in him.” A local affili. . .

Trying to advance Rhys’ career is more difficult from Maine instead of New York or L.A., but that’s part of how they keep her grounded - and so far, they seem to be getting the best of both worlds.

Tina argues Rhys’ budding career is helping to make her a better student, too. “I feel like today kids are on their phones all the time and they’re looking at their screens and they’re not making eye contact. And I have to say, even one of her teachers said, ‘I don’t want to put pressure on her, but Rhys is a perfect example of a student.’ She actually has confidence enough to be able to talk and to say how she feels. She will make eye contact and have a conversation. I do attribute it to having the confidence to be able to do what she does. Rhys goes in with adults and has to be able to talk constantly with them, whether she’s acting or modeling.”

By Nancye Tuttle, Staff Writer OGUNQUITIt’s been a long artistic jour ney for composer Wayne Barker and lyricist-book writer-director BD Wong. Six years to be exact since they landed the rights to turn MGM’s 1995 movie “Mr. Holland’s Opus” into a stage mu sical, until its world premiere at the Ogunquit Playhouse, on now through September 10. There have been many workshops and re-writes in this ambitious show. It is now a ful ly-staged production that covers nearly 40 years of lead character Glenn Holland’s artistic and per sonal life, 1969-2008. A “passion project” for Barker and Wong, it’s the latest production in the playhouse’s New Works program – and likely its largest to date. Audience mem bers must remember this when they see “Mr. Holland’s Opus.” Indeed, at Saturday’s open ing night party for benefactors, both Barker and Wong gave a glimpse into their years of hard work, arguments, compromise and collaboration that went into bringing “Mr. Holland’s Opus” this far.Playhouse executive artis tic director Brad Kenney echoed these sentiments in his pre-show curtain speech when he asked the audience to provide feedback via emails and social media, sharing likes and dislikes. It’s all part of a collaborative process that makes the show’s core. These include the fantasy relationship between Principal Chae-Jacobs and Assis tant Principal Wolters; a military funeral scene involving Holland’s former student; and the recur ring appearances of Jim Stahlen, a camp buddy from Holland’s youth who’s made it as a record ing artist.Acouple of musical num bers stand out to give a glimpse of the show’s potential for great ness, notably “Angels Getting Their Wings,” complete with the ensemble ringing bells; “Cole World,” a joyous, exuberant opening to Act II; and the grand finale, “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” with an on-stage orchestra and chorus.Kudos to the entire cast who showcase Wong’s commitment to diversity, making this production true to a 21st-century sensibility. They are talented and have given their all as the show has gone through revisions during rehears als andOnepreviews.stand-out includes Akron Watson. He is wonderful as Glenn Holland, in great voice and convincingly portraying his character’s angst, joys, sorrows

great theater a vibrant art form. The show has many moving parts, but at its heart are Holland’s conflicting emotions. He’s a se rious musician, working on his own compositions. He has a loving wife, Iris, and a son Cole, who was born profoundly deaf, making communication difficult. To be closer to Iris and spend more time composing, Holland takes a job teaching music at Ken nedy High School – part of their four year plan, Iris assures him at the beginning before Cole’s birth. Four years turn into nearly 40, and by the end Holland has given up composing for the most part. But he has inspired so many students with his innovative, in spirational teaching that they have become his opus, a shining example of his success. Several subplots and scenes complicate the storyline, making it feel disjointed. Removing them would strengthen and tighten

Exhibit by Yuko Hasegawa Lynch

KENNEBUNKThe Kennebunk Free Library announces its next Speers Gallery exhibit, “Beauty Unnoticed,” by Yuko Hasegawa Lynch. The exhibit runs September 1-30, and features colored pencil drawings of monarch butterflies and other figures from nature.Lynch has enjoyed creating art since her childhood. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with an art minor and has taken visual art lessons from a local artist in York, where she also resides. Lynch said, “In my art, I aim to capture the unique shapes and colors of things in nature, to enhance their beauty by turning them into art. In particular, I have always been fascinated by butterflies’ grace, beauty, and strength. I am fortunate to have moved to a property that already has a pretty good size milkweed patch. landscape. Her trademark dot technique is painstakingly handmade and yet evokes a pixelated computer image when viewed up close. Indeed, the work presents a duality of vision – one that juxtaposes the physical and the emotional, the figurative and the abstract, the handmade and the manufactured.Coombslives and works in San Francisco, CA. Born and educated in Ontario, Canada, she moved to the Bay Area in 2001 after several years of travel and work abroad. Her paintings have been exhibited across the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia, and can be found in over 400 private, corporate and public collections. Her unique approach to light and landscape, broken into “pixelated dots”, has won her a wide following. Coombs plays with pattern, repetition, and color in such a way that these qualities have become a secondary, abstract subject. Inherently modern, Coombs’ images evoke pixilation by her use of this painstaking technique. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 3, 5-8 p.m. and is open to the public. The artist will be in attendance. The exhibition will run September 3 through October 1. Rockin’ Daddios at Wells Harbor Elaine Coombs Presents “Transcendence” Call for Singers at Seaglass Chorale

KENNE BUNKKW Contemporary Art presents “Transcendence” artist Elaine Coombs’ first solo exhibition with the gallery, located at 184 Port Road in Kennebunk. The exhibition explores the artist’s newest series of sky paintings, continuing her depictions of idyllic sunlit landscapes. This new body of work, inspired by mesmerizing cloud patterns and the softly undulating colors of the golden hour, seek to conjure a sense of peace. Coombs’ metallic backgrounds in silvery pearls and golds stand in for sunlight and provide a soothing visual respite to rhythmic palette knife marks that indicate meticulously applied clouds. This combination of both simple and complex forms completes an ethereal skyward vision of the artist’s ideal psychological state made manifest.“Mesmerized by cloud patterns and the colors found at golden hour, I seek to conjure a peaceful emotional space, as well as interpret a physical one. Reflective metallic backgrounds in silvery pearl, gold and blue acrylic stand in for sunlight and provide a soothing visual respite to rhythmic palette knife marks that indicate clouds, meticulously applied,” she said. Coombs explores the use of metallic paints to create other worldly sunsets and skyscapes. Additionally, she continues to investigate the effects of sunlight and fog as they relate to her ongoing fascination with the forest day of the year with music of the Solstice, a Mummers play, and dance. Rehearsals will be held 6-7 p.m. every Thursday beginning on September 8 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Route 1, Kennebunk.Seaglass Chorale was founded in 1993 by artistic director Jean Strazdes. The chorale represents more than 20 southern Maine communities and regularly performs throughout the area, with concerts in Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Wells, Sanford, Saco, and other regional venues. Internationally acclaimed, Seaglass Chorale has traveled to Europe several times, performing in Ireland, Rome, Venice, Innsbruck, and Budapest. In September of 2004, choristers proudly led the musical prelude at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The chorale is also unique in its demonstration of connectivity to the community through benefit concerts. Most recently on April 10, the Sea Tones and musical guests performed a benefit concert for the people of Ukraine. The outpouring of generosity from the community was truly inspirational and over $4,300 was raised for the Sunflower of PeaceForFoundation.moreinformation, call 207-985-8747 or visit www.seaglasschorale.org.

Whisk in the mascarpone or sour cream, then gradually whisk in heavy cream. Stir in the raspberry liquor. Divide custard mixture among the six flan dishes filled with berries. Pour warm water into the baking dish to come up half way up the sides of the dishes. Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until the center of each custard stills jiggles slightly. Safe Sources of Pet Pain

NATIONWIDEWhen an animal is in pain, its owners may find it challenging to determine the root of discomfort. Unlike people, companion animals cannot verbalize where it hurts or what is wrong. In fact, some pets may not even exhibit signs they are in distress.Cats, dogs and other domestic pets are prone to the same types of pain that humans experience, according to Animal Health Associates in Michigan. Pain may stem from illness, injury or other causes. Here’s a look at four potential sources of pet pain. Underlying diseases. Diabetes, cancer and hyperthyroidism can cause pain in animals that may present as a lack of appetite in pets. Therefore, if your pet seems less enthusiastic at meal time, make an appointment with a veterinarian to rule out disease as the culprit. Dental and oral issues. Gum disease, tooth infections, sores, and other oral issues could cause distress in a pet and also may compromise its ability to eat. Inadequate nutrition could make a pet weak, which leads to its own issues. Arthritis and joint pain. Older dogs and those with genetic predispositions to conditions like hip dysplasia may have chronic pain. Difficulty getting up from seated or prone positions may showcase some of that pain. Pets with such conditions may not partake in activities they once enjoyed. Post-operative pain. Animals recuperating from a surgery may experience pain. Veterinarians often prescribe pain medication to mitigate this issue, but some pain may bleed through. A pet in pain may be more lethargic or may be snippy and aggressive. It could take some trial and error to determine if a pet is in pain. Any behavior that goes against the norm could be a sign of illness, injury or underlying pain. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

NATIONWIDETechnology has changed the world in ways too numerous to count. Many of those changes have made the world a safer place, but a growing dependence on smartphones, particularly when behind the wheel, continues to put the safety of drivers, their passengers, fellow motorists, and pedestrians in jeopardy. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that distracted driving was responsible for the deaths of more than 3,100 people in the United States in 2019. The threat of distracted driving is just as significant beyond U.S. borders as well. That includes Canada, where estimates from Transport Canada’s National Collision Database indicate 21 percent of the country’s fatal collisions involved distracted drivers.

Dear Computer Pro, The screen on my laptop just started to glitch and now the colors look off and it’s blurry. Have I been hacked or is it the display? The laptop is only a year old, so I hope I don’t have to buy a new one. Thanks, Troy Dear Troy, I’d have to look at it to be 100 percent sure it wasn’t a virus, but I’m guessing the display is going and will need to be replaced sooner than later. There’s no need to buy a new laptop, but sometimes the cost to replace a display makes it a difficult decision as to whether to repair or just buy a new laptop. Good luck! Matt Dear Computer Pro, A close friend of mine recently had an accident with her laptop and lost all her data. She said she spilled coffee on her laptop keyboard and the computer instantly shut off. She brought it to a repair shop, and they told her the motherboard was fried and that it probably wasn’t worth replacing since the laptop was a few years old. She asked if they could recover her data and they told her they could not unless she had her recovery key because the drive was encrypted. She had no idea what recovery key they were talking about and was not aware of any encryption. How can I make sure I’m not in the same boat if something happens to my laptop?! Thank you, Millie Dear Millie, This one is a thorn in my side, and I’ve seen it a few times here at my store. Some manufacturers of business-class laptops have decided that it was best to enable BitLocker (the software that encrypts the drive) by default. I think this is a horrible practice because the end users have no idea that they need to back up their recovery key, or else, as your friend found out, in the event of another failure, the drive is useless, and data can’t be recovered. I don’t dislike BitLocker, but this should be something the end user opts in to and is given an opportunity to back up their recovery key! The first step would be to simply check and see if BitLocker is enabled. Press the Windows key on your keyboard and start typing “encrypt” until you see “Manage BitLocker” in your start menu search results. Click on “Manage BitLocker” and it will tell you if BitLocker is on or off. If it is off, you don’t need to do anything else. If it is on, simply click the link for “Turn off BitLocker” and it will begin the decryption process. Depending on how much data you have on the drive, this can take from a few minutes to a few days. Simply go back to this page periodically and, at some point, it will tell you that BitLocker is off. If you feel like BitLocker is a good idea for your situation, rather than clicking on the link to turn BitLocker off, click on “Backup your recovery key” and save it somewhere safe. I would suggest saving it as a file in some cloud storage provider (OneDrive, DropBox, etc.) or to a USB drive. I would also recommend that you print a copy of the key and keep that printed copy somewhere safe! Good luck!!

NATIONWIDEData breaches have become all too common. Few weeks go by without a sizable data breach making headlines, potentially and adversely affecting consumers and the businesses they patronize. Understanding data breaches further can help all parties involved more effectively safeguard themselves and their private information. What is a data breach? The credit reporting agency Experian says a data breach is when information is accessed, taken or used by a person without authorization. The Identity Theft Resource Center indicates three data breaches happen every day. With most data breaches, cybercriminals steal names, email addresses, usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers. However, any data that can be sold is potentially at risk in a data breach. How do data breaches happen? Data breaches can happen for a variety of reasons. Criminals utilize spyware and phishing schemes to access sensitive data. Some data breaches are a byproduct of accidents or employee negligence. Computer or system failures may inadvertently make data vulnerable. The security experts at Norton say that visiting a compromised website, using weak and insecure passwords and/or utilizing out-of-date software that creates holes that enable an attacker to sneak in malware are notable data breach origins. SQL injections (SQLI) are a common type of data breach. Malwarebytes, an online security resource, says this is a type of attack that exploits weakness in the SQL database management software of insecure websites. A cybercriminal can enter a malicious code in the search bar of a retail site. Instead of returning searches for merchandise, the website will then give the hacker a list of customers and their credit card numbers. How to protect data? Companies and individuals may not be able to prevent every data breach, as even the largest corporations and federal governments have been compromised over the last several years. However, there are important steps to help create greater protection. Use passwords that involve a complex and unique combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Try to use different What Are Data Breaches? passwords for each online account. A password manager can keep passwords and usernames organized.Monitor all banking and other financial information frequently so that unfamiliar activity is recognized immediately. Only use secure URLs when entering credit card or other personal information. Install and implement highquality security software. Upgrade devices when software is no longer supported by the manufacturer.Companiescan use a business-grade VPN service. Patch and upgrade software as soon as options are available. Stolen data typically ends up on the dark web, a part of the internet most people never see that is largely used to traffic various illegal goods, offers Malwarebytes. Data stolen from one site can be used again on another if a person uses the same usernames and passwords. Data breaches seem commonplace today, but that doesn’t mean individuals should be complacent. It is vital for consumers and businesses to protect information at all costs. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

PUZZLE

From The Digital Archives

Matt Dear Computer Pro, I have an older (2012) iMac 27 that has gotten terribly slow recently. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? Thank you for your time, John Dear John, Yes! You can actually make it run faster than it did when you first purchased it with a couple upgrades. Many of the older iMacs shipped with only 4GB of memory. Upgrading that to 16GB will make an enormous difference overall, but not nearly as much as doing an SSD upgrade and replacing that old, slugging hard drive! The memory upgrade is straightforward, but the SSD upgrade can be a bit tedious and is not recommended for the average home user. If you bring it to a local repair shop that is familiar with Macs, though, they should be able to take care of all of it for you! When the upgrades are complete, you’ll fall in love it all over again! Good luck!

Though smartphones are not the lone distraction drivers face, they do pose a significant threat. But smartphones also can help drivers be safer behind the wheel. The following are four apps that drivers can install on their smartphones that were designed to make modern driving safer.SafeDrive: The SafeDrive app can block all the textual apps in a phone, removing a major threat to drivers’ ability to concentrate behind the wheel. Drivers who utilize SafeDrive can still make phone calls, but they won’t be able to receive or send messages.LifeSaver: The LifeSaver app runs silently in the background and then wakes up and locks the phone when a driver begins driving. “This year’s honorees faced unprecedented circumstances during their high school careers as a result of the pandemic,” said Kerry de Bree, Executive Director, Community Harvest.

Recepients include local businesses in the dairy, grain, vegetable, fruit, meat, and poultryGovernorindustriesJanetMills announced the grants at Blue Ox Malthouse in Lisbon. Blue Ox, a grain processor and recipient of a $500,000 award, purchases grain from farmers, processes it into malt, then resells the malt to breweries, distillers, and other businesses across the state. Blue Ox serves as a critical link in the agricultural supply chain, supporting local farmers and brewers. Blue Ox said it would use its grant to expand processing capacity.

KENNEBUNKCommunity Harvest recently awarded college scholarships to four Kennebunk High School graduates in recognition of their service to others. The scholarship winners will receive $2,000 each for their demonstrated commitment to volunteering or advocacy efforts that promote community building, diversity, and/or inclusion.

The investment comes after farmers and food producers surveyed during the pandemic indicated that storage, processing, and packaging capacity investments were critically important to the strength of the agricultural community.Maine is home to approximately 7,600 farms of all sizes, scales, and agricultural practices. Before the pandemic, the infrastructure hindered the ability of some farmers and food processors to meet a growing demand for local food and to serve markets outside of Maine. During the pandemic, many restaurants, schools, and other institutions with food service programs temporarily or permanently closed, causing farmers and food processors to suddenly lose some of their biggest wholesale buyers. The influx of AIIP funds is a long-awaited statewide investment, and will have a positive impact on state agriculture. The plan improves the lives of Maine people and families, helps businesses to create good-paying jobs, and builds a stronger economy poised for future prosperity.

“In evaluating the accomplishments of the applicants, our board was especially impressed by those who found ways to volunteer and to help others amidst the challenges presented by COVID-19,” she said. This year’s recipients are as follows:Elaina Hammond, Kennebunk, a longtime Community Harvest volunteer, most recently served as a student member of the Board of Directors. She was chosen for her commitment not only to Community Harvest, but many other local organizations and social justice issues. “Our farmers and food processors have told us they can deliver Maine-grown food to more people if they can make upgrades and meaningful and strategic investments in their businesses,” notes the governor. “With these grants we can deliver that help and they can deliver to all of us and the world over healthy food, all while creating jobs and strengthening our economy.”“This nearly $20 million investment in Maine’s agriculture and food sectors will empower business owners to implement innovative solutions that support their continued ability to produce the food we rely on, and address processing bottlenecks while also enhancing value-added production activities and its economic impact on our state,” said Amanda Beal, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. “We are committed to supporting funding opportunities to support farmers and food processors in the great work that they do.”“Maine’s 10-Year Economic Development Strategy identified the growing demand for food sources as an area of economic opportunity for Maine,” said Heather Johnson, Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development.

STATEWIDENearly $20 million in grant awards through Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan will go to help Maine farmers and food processors address infrastructure needs and to expand in-state food production and processing. Funds will help farmers increase supplies of Maine-grown food, meet growing food supply demands, and create and sustain jobs in Maine’s heritage industries. The grants will also support economic growth, and enhance Maine’s national reputation for food excellence.Thegrants were awarded through the Agricultural Infrastructure Investment Program (AIIP), administered through the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF). They will be used to support a variety of infrastructure needs, including harvesting, processing, manufacturing, packaging and handling equipment. In fact, the National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics reports that 50 percent of teenagers have misused a drug at least once. In addition, data from the NCDAS indicates that drug use among eighth graders increased by 61 percent between 2016 and 2020. Such statistics are enough to make any parent lose sleep. STATEWIDEThe Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program protects Maine’s natural resources and prevents agriculture pollution by promoting the safe and proper disposal of outdated, unused, or unwanted pesticides. The program is made possible by the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Board of Pesticides Control (BPC) and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. The program is open to homeowners and family-owned farms. Homeowners and farmers sometimes discover old, unusable or obsolete pesticides in sheds, garages, and basements. Mercury, lead, DDT, and dioxin-containing compounds of arsenic are now banned because of their hazards to human health, wildlife, and the environment. Many herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides, and similar products used in agriculture and around the home are also classified as hazardous to environments. Some pesticides become unusable when they freeze or get damp. Mainers who want to dispose of these wastes in an environmentally sound manner are often discouraged to learn that proper disposal of waste pesticides is prohibitively expensive. Safe removal of obsolete and unwanted pesticides is important for protecting the public, wildlife, and environmental health. Improper pesticide handling and disposal, such as placing it in the trash or pouring it down the drain, can contaminate land and water resources. The Maine Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program ensures that they are handled properly. Since 1982, the program has saved more than 250,000 lbs. of pesticides from entering into the waste stream. Collected pesticides are taken to licensed, out-of-state disposal facilities by the Environmental Protection Agency. disposal options, are found on the BPC website at www.thinkfirstspraylast.org.Formoreinformation, go to www.maine.gov/dacf/php/

FUNERAL HOME Somersworth, NH We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked ques tions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sym pathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expres sion of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the de ceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellec tual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of com munity support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic. There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy ex tended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and will be directed to list of trusted florists. about any questions which help. Since 1947 Since 1979 207-967-1393

DriveWell: Drivers who want some insight into their driving habits should consider forests, and wildlife refuges and to provide grants for state and local parks and outdoor recre ation projects. Over the past six decades, the LWCF has played a pivotal role in ensuring those resources will be here for future generations. After years of di verting the program’s specifi cally intended funds away from conservation, the LWCF was permanently funded in 2020 with the leadership of Maine’s congressional delegation. The map is located on the BPL website at shtml.land-water-conservation-map.dacf/parks/publications_maps/www.maine.gov/

The Department of Ag riculture, Conservation and Forestry’s (DACF) Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) re cently released the new Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Outdoor Recreation Investments Map for Maine, developed in collaboration with the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund, Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation, Maine Recreation and Park Association, Maine Department of Transportation, Appalachian Mountain Club, and The Nature Conservancy. The map highlights investments in outdoor recreation such as trails, parks, and other projects. 870 LWCF-assisted outdoor rec reation projects included on the map are safeguarded for every one to“Thisenjoy.work to inventory the full scope of the LWCF State and Local Assistance Program’s impact provides a tangible and visible way to understand the im portance of this program in our work to conserve and provide access to these important lands for the benefit of the public and our state in perpetuity,” said DACF commissioner Amanda Beal. “I invite everyone to visit the LWCF map website to get a sense of the vast array of projects that have been made possible with LWCF funding.” “In Maine, the term ‘con served lands’ most often conjures up places like the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. But many playgrounds, baseball fields, and neighborhood trails are conserved lands too, made possible by the LWCF,” said BPL Director Andy Cutko. “This ter rific new web resource demon strates the importance of having outdoor places a ten or fifteenminute drive from home.” “For 57 years, the LWCF has ensured Mainers have ready access to the outdoors and has helped protect some of the places we love best. It has strengthened our communities and economy,” said Appalachian Mountain Club Maine Conservation Policy Director Eliza Townsend. “Now, the public and our elected repre sentatives will be able to appreci ate its impact. AMC is proud to partner with the State of Maine to make this information avail able.”Two Maine Conservation Corps environmental stewards dedicated over 3,000 hours of service to creating the interac tive recreation map. The process involved converting 2,700 paper records into a dynamic GIS da tabase. An additional position in cluded in the recently enacted state budget will support im provements to the map and help ensure that resources developed through the fund remain perma nently available to the public.
