2nd Annual Paddle Battle in K’Port KENNEBUNKPORT On Sunday, August 24, The Nonantum Resort, located at 95 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport will be hosting the Second Annual Paddle Battle from 1 to 5 p.m. This large outdoor festival will be focused around a race that will be held at 1:30 p.m., consisting of kayak, canoe, stand-up paddleboard, surfboards and any other vessel without a motor heading down the Kennebunk River. The entry fee for this race is $45 for a single participant until

August 23. Same day registration will be $60. All levels of athletes are welcome and encouraged! The race begins and ends at the Nonantum Resort with the turnaround point being in the basin beyond The Mathew J Lanigan Bridge. Weir’s Motors will be sponsoring live music by Todo Bien. In addition to the race and demonstrations, the Kennebunkport Fire Department will be on hand teaching water safety awareness, and there will be lots of outdoor family fun and games. Rather than a specific scene, Volpe drew inspiration from a familiar palette that he had previously used to conjure imagery commemorating Celia Thaxter’s famous gardens. For Palmer, color was key. “I wanted it to be bright enough to be eye catching,” he explained regarding his brighter than usual color choices. Against a blue backdrop that served as the sea and sky he painted ethereal clouds, and a quaint village scene to imbue the chair with a fun, whimsical quality, while remaining true to the multi-dimensional aspect typical of his recent work. ~ News ~ Secretary of State Matt Dunlap Announces Enhanced Online Absentee Ballot Request Service STATEWIDE – Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap announced recently that the Online Absentee Ballot Request Service for the November 4th General and Referendum Election is now available. The service has been enhanced to facilitate requests from emergency aid workers and displaced voters, should a State of Emergency occur that requires aid workers or voters to relocate. This option will be available only during a State of Emergency and offers functionality similar to requests from Maine residents who are stationed in the military or residing in another country. The Online Absentee Ballot Request Service is available at: www.maine.gov/ cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/ index.pl. All Maine municipalities are required to accept electronic requests for absentee ballots. Municipal clerks will process the requests and mail out absentee ballots when they become available. The service allows any registered Maine voter to request their absentee ballot by:

Completing and submitting their request form online; Filling out the request form online, then printing and signing the

completed form to mail to their municipal clerk; or, Printing a blank request form to fill out by hand and deliver to their mu-

nicipal clerk. The service is available now for voters to submit their requests; however, ballots will not be sent out until 30 to 45 days before the election. Once a voter has submitted their request using the online service, they

will be sent an automated email notification containing the information they submitted and a confirmation number. When the request is processed and accepted by their municipal clerk, they will be sent an additional status notification.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. South Coast Senior College Announces Schedule of Fall Courses

YORK COUNTY South Coast Senior College housed at York County Community College announces an expanded list of fall courses slated to begin the week of Sept. 13. Classes are open to residents aged 50+ of York County and Seacoast NH. South Coast Senior College offers courses designed for adults with an interest in learning just for the joy of it. cyclists gathered at Lynnfield High School, MA in July for the 2014 Reid’s Ride, and raised $165,000 for the fight against adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer. The 110 mile ride finished at Kennebunk Beach (KBIA) and was the largest Reid’s Ride ever in its successful ten-year history of raising funds for cancer patients and their families. Funds from the Ride support improved patient and survivor care, improved access for AYA cancer patients to new clinical trials, and the education of medical professionals about the unique challenges of the cancers predominantly striking adolescents and young adults. Cyclists crossing the finish line 28 miles later in Gloucester were greeted by the cheers from hundreds of friends, family, supporters and volunteers waiting for them at Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park, specially decorated

Reid Sacco, for whom Reid’s Ride and the Reid Sacco AYA Caner Alliance is named, spent summers as a child and teen learning and teaching sailing on the Kennebunk waterfront. Memories of him during those happiest of times remain dear for family and friends. But more recently, Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute in Portland stepped up to the plate in a collaboration with the Reid R. Sacco AYA Cancer Clinic & Program at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, directed by Susan Parsons, MD. As in integral part of this collaboration, a scholarship program was launched to help

educate young health care professionals about AYA cancer. Made possible by funds raised by Reid’s Ride, two second-year medical students will spend this summer as the inaugural Reid R Sacco AYA Cancer Summer Scholars. For many of those who participate in Reid’s Ride each year, the event is bittersweet. Reid’s Ride has made possible some remarkable progress in the fight against AYA cancers. But all of it is inspired by a young man who lost his own personal battle with AYA cancer. On this past July 24th, Reid would have been thirty years of age, and many of his family and friend reflected on the success of the Ride, on how sorely he is missed, and on what the world is missing by his absence.

full and healthy lives.” Although Reid’s Ride has been a 28-mile event for ten years, each year about a quarter of the riders extend their ride after the Stage Fort Park festivities and pedal back to Lynnfield High School or to home. This year, a small team of riders took that ambitious undertaking to new lengths. Once the morning activities were concluded and all the materials, tents, and decorations were packed up at Stage Fort Park, a group of eight riders then set out to the northeast for a route that would take them through New Hampshire and to a finish in Kennebunk, Maine. The journey totaled 110 miles, meant to symbolize this being the tenth anniversary of Reid’s Ride. Blessed with beautiful weather, and the generous hospitality of family and friends, the eight reached Rye Beach, NH by late Sunday afternoon, where they stayed the night. The intrepid cyclists rolled onto the grounds of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association (KBIA) children’s summer program early Monday afternoon, to a warm reception from

Customers can avoid payment scams entirely and keep current on their CMP bills by enrolling in the utility’s AutoPay service, where the amount due is automatically deducted from a bank account each month. The identity of any CMP employee can be verified by asking for their photo ID card (if in person) or their employee number, then contacting CMP at 1-800-750-4000 to verify their identity and the nature of their business. CMP employees are happy to comply with an identity verification request. Customers who believe they have been scammed should contact their local law enforcement agency and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov).

YORK COUNTY – The York County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation recently awarded $47,200 in grants to seven nonprofits, including Biddeford Primary School, to create a sensory and horticultural therapy garden. Other grant recipients included: Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, for 130-plus preschoolers from 10 Head Start centers in York County to attend story hours, craft activities, and guided nature walks Community Bicycle Center, to expand the youth welding and fabrication program by partially funding ventilation equipment for an educational metalworking lab. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine, to expand the number of disadvantaged chil-

dren served in York County. The York County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects that strengthen communities in York County. Customers of Central Maine Power Co., a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, continue to receive calls from scam artists claiming to represent the utility and demanding immediate payments. The good news: Customers are heeding CMP’s warnings about the scams, and very few are taking the bait. “While these scammers keep trying to get our customers to depart with some of their hard-earned money, very few people are falling for it. The word is out, and people know it’s a scam,” said CMP spokesperson Gail Rice. “This should serve as a message to these scam artists that they should stop wasting their time trying to defraud our customers.” Scammers have typically called business customers — often restaurants and markets just prior to their lunch or dinner rush periods — but they’ve also targeted residential customers. Some customers reported receiving multiple calls in the same day. Most are warned of imminent disconnection, instructed to purchase a pre-paid debit card at a local convenience store, and told to call a specific number with the card information. In some cases, the perpetrators told customers they hadn’t received a recent payment or they had incorrectly processed a payment, and the customer had to pay again. Rice added that some scammers have become increasingly creative in their efforts. “Many of them use devices that spoof caller ID systems so the call looks like it’s coming from CMP,” she said. “Some of them even try to sweeten the deal with an offer of discounted service for the rest of the year. Fortunately, customers have taken notice of our prior warnings and know these calls are all scams.” CMP warns customers to verify all information before making such payments, and offers these tips to keep their account information secure: CMP will not call a customer for payment if his or her account is in good standing. CMP does not ask customers to purchase debit cards such as Green Dot MoneyPaks to make payments. Any instruction involving such a payment scheme should be considered a red flag. Customers can check their balance at CMP’s website at www.cmpco.com or by calling 1-800-750-4000 (residential customers) or 1-800-565-3181 (business customers). Customers who need to make an urgent payment should do so only through the CMP website, or at one of the payment

‘Marvelous Wonderettes’… A Marvelous Way To End Summer

By Scott Andrews, Staff Columnist ARUNDEL Summer theater is traditionally dominated by fluffy, funny, tuneful musical fare. That’s exactly what’s in store for audiences at Arundel Barn Playhouse as the company wraps up its 2014 season with “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” a melodic and nostalgic stroll down memory lane. I loved this very tuneful, joyfully retrospective show. “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a marvelous way to end the summer theater season on just the right note. “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is an exemplar of the “jukebox musical,” a stage show where a selection of unrelated pop songs that were originally written and performed by various disparate artists are assembled around a minimal story line, thinly drawn characters and a few other unifying features. Roger Bean, a West Coast director and theatrical impresario, wrote the script. He has penned numerous others, but this is by far his most popular. Bean’s unifying aesthetic is the female artists and girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s. It was a period when solo singers Connie

Francis and Brenda Lee attained peaks of popularity. Ditto an assortment of all-female close-harmony vocal ensembles such as the Chordettes, Marvelettes, Shirelles and Crystals. Some of these groups formed in high school and scored their biggest hits before they reached their twenties. That’s the story of “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” four teenagers who won a high school competition. The setting is the 1958 Springfield High School senior prom, and Bean’s young ladies are performing at the big dance. Cindy Lou (Kate Turner) is the most popular with the boys. She knows it – and acts accordingly. Betty Jean (Lexi Duffy) is her rival in romance and tends to act out. Missy (Rachel Grindle) is awkward and geeky, while Suzy (Danae DeShazer) is the archetypal dumb blonde, complete with bubble gum. The second act is the Springfield High School class reunion 10 years later. The tone is more somber, and the women, now in their late twenties, have logged some experience in life, including unfaithful boyfriends and philandering husbands. See REVIEW page 32...

Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking. Henry Joseph Darger (April 12, 1892 - April 13, 1973) was a writer who kept to himself and worked as a custodian in Chicago. He was not known as an artist until after his death when his art work was discovered among his possessions. He was possibly born in Brazil or Germany and lived with his father, who was a tailor and known as a kind man, until 1900 when his crippled father had to be taken to live in the Catholic Mission. At this time, the young Darger was placed in a Catholic boy’s home. His father died in 1905 and his son was placed in an institution for the feebleminded. After several attempts, he finally managed to escape in 1908 and found employment in a Catholic hospital and in this way supported himself for the next 50 years. He went to Mass daily, sometimes 5 times in a day and

dressed shabbily and rarely interacted with other people. In 1930 he found a room on the second floor of Chicago’s north side. Were he living today, he could be the subject of one of the “Buried Alive” type TV programs as it seems that he saved every piece of trash and junk he came upon. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “The Trip to Bountiful” Opens At Hackmatack BERWICK The Trip to Bountiful” opens this week at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. This heartwarming story set in the 1940’s is of an elderly woman (Carrie Watts) who desires to visit the town where she grew up but is stopped by her meddling daughter-in-law and overprotective son. Determined, Carrie makes the trip and finds new friends along the road, but discovers that the town she once knew, is no more. An NBC TV play in 1953, on Broadway that same year, a movie in 1985, revived with Tony awards on Broadway last year, playing in Los Angeles next month, and then Boston in November, you can catch “The Trip to Bountiful” now at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. The part of Carrie Watts is being played by Sharon Hilton, a name synonymous with the Hackmatack, having been involved with the playhouse since it’s inception in 1972. Avoid Expensive Errors When Paying for College It’s just about Back-to-School time again. If you have young children, you might be hustling them to the store for backpacks and binders. But if you fast-forward a few years, you can envision driving your kids a little farther — to their college dorms. And when that day comes, you’ll want to be financially prepared. So you’ll want to avoid making costly mistakes when preparing for, and paying, those big bills. Here are some of the most common of these errors: Not saving enough Only half of all families with children under 18 save any money for college, according to a recent study by Sallie Mae, the country’s largest originator of federally in-

The person who saw her asked the neighbors but she was no one’s cat. Unable to have cats in her apartment, the woman contacted Safe Haven. We named her Julia, because she’s as pretty as a jewel and very feminine. Julia is a petite calico with little white paws and a big white bib under her cute chin. Heading back to school and dreading the all-you-caneat cafeteria? First year and fearing the “Freshman 15”? Staying healthy in college is more than just fitting into your skinny jeans—it can seriously help you later on in life. Why care now, you ask? The American Heart Association says “Life is Why.” Here’s a lesson you don’t want to forget: nearly 68 percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, and obesity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. Brick Store Museum Releases New Heritage Ornament

KENNEBUNK – To celebrate the rich heritage of the Kennebunks, the Brick Store Museum began a tradition five years ago in creating a unique ornament each year focusing on the different histories of the Kennebunk area. Each ornament since 2010 has been created by ChemArt, a company that creates beautiful Christmas ornaments, including the annual White House ornament for the White House Historical Society in Washington, DC. This year, the Museum featured one of its own. Previous years featured themes such as the historic district, our shipbuilding

history, and local beaches. The ornament for 2014 is an ornate rocking horse, modeled as a miniature to one now found in the Museum’s collection. William Barry, a well-known 19th Century Kennebunk architect, owned the real-life leather rocking horse in the 1860s. ChemArt’s re-creation of the child’s toy brings the

horse to life through 24-karat gold plated brass. With only 250 of the rocking horse handassembled, this limited edition is bound to be popular! The Heritage Ornament is $21.95, and can now be purchased online (via www.brickstoremuseum. org) or at the Museum’s shop at 117 Main Street in Kennebunk. Previous year ornaments can also be purchased, except for 2010’s Historic District ornament, which has since sold out. tories. Arundel’s four very appealing young ladies boast fine voices and excellent stage presences. Costume designer Emma Ford adorns her four characters in the fashions of the two decades depicted in the show, exemplified

by brilliant crinoline skirts in the first act and calf-high white leather boots in the second. The format is show-withinshow, and director Ed Reichert maintains much-needed constant visual action.

Now in its third year and funded by a grant from the Nellie Mae Foundation, over 60 students from the Sanford School District participated in the one-week programs held on the Wells campus this summer. While on campus, students learned about YCCC and its programs such as Culinary Arts, Graphic Design and Criminal Justice through workshops led by YCCC staff, faculty and the Wells Police Department. Participants also attended seminars about college, career readiness, entrepreneurship and valuing differences. For those students who really did not yet have any specific postsecondary goals yet this was an opportunity for them to see what the future could hold for them. “For most of the students it was a game-changing week.” said Kathy Birch, of the Sanford School District “Students who may not have been engaged in their school work began to see the point of what they are doing in school. They made connections between the classroom and the workforce. Henry Darger had no training in art and probably never visited a museum but the pictures are colorful and well done. He seemed to have an innate understanding of art and composition. He traced elements from other sources onto his pictures if he felt like it and if the picture he wanted to copy wasn’t the right size to fit in his composition, he took it to a camera shop to be enlarged or reduced in size. His art includes Edwardian interiors, tranquil flowered landscapes including children and fantastic creatures, to scenes of terror depicting children being tortured. Dear Computer Lady, When I had XP and Outlook Express I saved some of my eml files because I wanted to make sure I would keep them. When I had to buy a new computer with Windows 7 it no longer uses Outlook Express and I have to use an online mailbox. I use gmail. Now I have file folders of saved eml files that I cannot view. Is there any way to access the files, is there a program that will let me see them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gigi in Ontario, Canada Dear Gigi, There is a program that can open your saved email messages, Windows Live Mail. You can download Windows Live Mail, free of charge from

Microsoft. Just search for Windows Essentials. Once you have downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail, you will be able to open any of your saved emails by double clicking on them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I stop pop ups? John Dear John, Unwanted pop-ups today almost always come from malware on your computer. The best way to get rid of the malware and thus get rid of the pop-ups is to keep your antivirus and antimalware software on your computer up to date. I recommend a combination of AVG Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. These two programs

together will keep your computer running smoothly and block incoming malware. If your computer is infected with too many malware programs, it might need a good cleaning out at your local computer repair shop first. My problem is my “D” drive is full although I have lots of memory on my system. I get an error message every day saying my backup failed. The “D” drive has 14.9 GB used and 12.1 MB of free space. A recovery partition is a special section of your hard drive that holds all the files needed to recover your computer to factory condition if anything goes wrong with the software on your computer. For example, if you got infected with a virus. Computer manufacturers used to provide the recovery files on one or more disks (CDs or DVDs) and you could use the disks to repair your computer, but they have switched over to providing these files on your hard drive, probably because it cuts costs. If this is the case with your computer, then backing up to the D: drive is not a good idea, and probably not possible without losing the recovery files. I would suggest that you get an external hard drive that attaches to your computer by USB cable to backup to. Some other options to consider might be a

Remote backup plans like Carbonite and Mozy run automatically in the background when your computer is running, and do protect you from hard drive failure, fire, theft, electrical surges, and even the dog eating your homework grin . In addition, the remote backup companies keep older versions of your files so that you can retrieve an older copy if you have problems with the copy currently on your computer. SPORTS Southern Maine Youth Football League Jamboree BERWICK The Southern Maine Youth Football League (SMYFL), will be holding it’s annual football jamborees on August 23, hosted by the Noble Squires at Noble Middle School on Cranberry Meadow Road in Berwick. There will be two jamborees that will take place that day. The first starts at 12:30 for Grades 3 and 4 division with 8 teams participating, and at 5:30 p.m. under the lights, Grades 5 & 6 division with 9 teams participating. With good weather, we

expect there to be in the neighborhood of 2000 people that will attend through the course of the day and evening events. The jamborees are the kick off to our youth seasons, giving players an opportunity to get their first taste of football in a non-competitive environment, and to experience the excitement of playing in front of a large crowd of football family and friends. For many participants it will be their first time ever playing football or cheering for a sport. And for SMYFL, this
