Historic New England’s Open Houses

YORK COUNTYCelebrate Southern Maine’s history, architecture, stories, landscapes, interior design, and beloved writers at Historic New England’s Open House on Saturday, June 3. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests can visit the region’s distinctly different historic sites for free.

The Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick was the home of iconic Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett and the inspiration for the setting of her first novel, “Deephaven” (1877). Learn about Sarah’s life, her connection to nature, her lively Boston social circle, and her decades-long relationship with beloved partner, philanthropist, and writer, Annie Fields.

Hamilton House in South Berwick, with its wind-swept fields and forest along the Salmon Falls River, offers one the most stunning landscapes of the region and a rich and complex history. The homeland of the Wabanaki prior to the arrival of European colonists, the site was later owned by Jonathan Hamilton for his shipping business in the 18th century, farmed by the Goodwin family in the 19th century, and used as the summer retreat of Emily Tyson

and her stepdaughter Elise at the turn of the 20th century.

Sayward-Wheeler House in York, with one of the best-preserved colonial interiors in the nation, contains furniture and portraits that were present on the eve of the American Revolution. Owned by a single family from 1719-1977, the house captures centuries of complex history, holding the stories of enslaved household members, wealthy and esteemed property owners, political upheaval, and more.

Just a few miles away, the New Hampshire Seacoast offers four additional sites: Jackson House in Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s oldest timber frame house; Langdon House in Portsmouth, showcasing grandeur from the 18th century to the Colonial Revival period; Rundlet-May House in Portsmouth, a sumptuous country estate, and Gilman Garrison House in Exeter, 1709 fortified structure where hidden history is revealed.

Historic New England is the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation, engaging diverse audiences in developing a deeper understanding and enjoyment of

New England home life. Historic New England is the national leader in collecting, preserving, and using significant buildings, landscapes, archives, stories, and objects from the past to today, saving and sharing New England’s history for present and future generations.

In 1910, William Sumner Appleton founded the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, known today as Historic New England. For the next thirty-seven years until his death in November 1947, Appleton continued to lead the rapidly growing organization. His vision evolved over the last century into a thriving heritage organization that now welcomes more than 200,000 visitors each year to its 39 historic properties in five New England states. OPA Presents 27th Annual Chamber Music Festival

OGUNQUITOgunquit Performing Arts

(OPA) salutes the life and career of master cellist Bruck Coppock with performances by Boston Chamber Music piano quartet on Friday June 2, and the New Hampshire Trio’s piano trio on Friday, June 9. The concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit.

Since its inception, the Chamber Music Festival has been a special occasion for OPA, and in recent years, has had an

ongoing partnership with Boston Chamber Music. The Bostonbased players were selected and led by international cellist Bruck Coppock, who every year put together a special ensemble for the Ogunquit concerts, unique to OPA. This year, pianist Randall Hodgkinson is continuing the tradition by leading Boston Chamber Music in a concert dedicated to Coppock, who passed away in November of 2022. Thoughts about Coppock will be delivered at the concert by his life-long friend and colleague, clarinetist

Tom Hill. The Boston Chamber Music Piano Quartet will play the Mozart Quartet in Eb, K.493, the Mel Bonis Sonata pour Piano et Violoncelle, and the Fauré Quatour in C, opus 15. The players will include: Omar Chen Guey, violin; Peter Sulski, viola; David Russell, cello; Randall Hodgkinson, piano, and Bernstein and Gunther Schuller.

The New Hampshire Trio will play Rachmaninoff Trio Elégiaque No. 1 in G minor, Charles Ives Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano, and Amy Beach Piano

Trio in A minor, Op. 150. Headed by pianist Mathilde Handelsman, the trio was recently founded in 2021, and is the resident faculty chamber ensemble at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH. The players include Karl Orvik, violin; Jacques Lee Wood, cello; Mathilde Handelsman, piano. Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door; $5 student; and may be purchased at the Dunaway Center, Cricket’s Corner Beach & Toy, Ogunquit Welcome Center, or www.ogunquitperformingarts.org. Memorial Day Grilling Tips

NATIONWIDE -

1. Always make sure the grill is hot. A hot grill will give a wonderful sear on the outside, while keeping the meat juicy in the center. Heat prevents food from sticking to the grill, and helps kill bacteria. Always heat the grill with the lid closed, so that it will heat quickly to temperature. It will usually take 10-15 minutes to heat up a grill. Low - between 250-300°f; Medium - 300-350°f; Medium-high 350-400°f; High - 400-450°f.

2. Start with a clean grill. This will allow the flavor to shine through and not mix with any flavors left behind from what was cooked before. Clean the grill with a sturdy brush while still hot, immediately after each use.

3. Oil the grill grates. This will help prevent most meats from sticking to the grill. Avoid spraying cooking spray directly onto the grill, as the spray can can cause flare-ups. Instead, oil a paper towel, then use tongs to rub on the grill grates. To avoid using oil while cooking, place a piece of non-stick grill-safe foil on the grill and cook directly on that. For an easy grill hack, cut a potato in half and rub the cut side of the potato on hot grill grates, making the grill naturally nonstick.

4. Do not move food around while cooking, and do not open the grill lid. Most foods only need to be flipped once. Moving the food around the grill while it cooks can cause it to be unevenly cooked and can add to the total cooking time. After the first flip, the grill lid should stay down. Keeping the lid closed during grilling helps ensure it stays hot, speeds up cooking time and prevents food from drying out. It also prevents flare-ups by limiting the oxygen coming in.

5. Use an instant-read meat thermometer to check for a safe and desired temperature: rare beef: 125°f; well done beef: 160°f; ground beef burgers: 160°f; pork: 145°f; chicken: 165°f. Cooked meat will rise 5-10 degrees after removed from the grill.

PUZZLE ANSWERS

6. Always let meat rest for at least 5-15 minutes before slicing. Resting the meat allows the juices to redistribute for a juicier, more tender piece. Tent the meat with a piece of foil while it rests to keep the meat warm.

7. Avoid cross-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and cooked foods. Always refrigerate meat while marinating and never baste with the marinating liquid, unless it’s been boiled down to remove any bacteria.

8. Use a grill basket for diced vegetables and fruit. Grill baskets are handy for preventing foods from falling through the grill grate. Grease the basket beforehand to prevent sticking.

9. Smaller pieces of meat that take 20 minutes or less to cook, should be grilled over direct heat, while large pieces of meat that take more than 20 minutes to cook should be grilled over indirect heat. A New York Strip should be cooked over direct heat, while ribs should be cooked with indirect heat.

10. Add sauces or glazes towards the end of the grilling pro-

Senators Introduce SAP Act

NATIONWIDE -

U.S. Senators recently introduced the Supporting All Producers (SAP) Act, legislation that would require the United States Department Agriculture (USDA) to consult with maple producers when determining education and research priorities for the Acer Access and Development Program (Acer). Acer is a competitive grant program, supporting research and education related to maple syrup production and sustainability in the maple syrup industry.

“Maine has a rich and storied tradition of producing some of the most exceptional maple syrup in the world,” said Senator Susan Collins, who cosponsored the act with Senator Peter Welch of Vermont. “This important bipartisan legislation will ensure that the voices of our maple syrup producers are heard in determining allocations under

the Acer Access and Development Program. By requiring the USDA to consult with these hardworking individuals, we can prioritize research and education initiatives that directly support the growth and sustainability of our beloved maple syrup industry.”

“Maple syrup production is a cornerstone of Vermont’s economy and culture—but it’s a challenging business and only getting more so as climate

change continues to alter our environment and impact yields,” said Senator Welch. “That’s why I’m proud to introduce the SAP Act. This bill will give our maple syrup producers a voice in the decision-making at Acer and help producers continue to create this world class Vermont product.”

The Acer Access and Development Program funds research and education initiatives on maple syrup production, natural resource sustainability, and marketing for maple products. The program also works with landowners to begin or expand maple-sugaring activities or to make the land available for others to do so.

cess. Glaze during the last five minutes of cooking time, if the total time is 30 minutes or less. If the total time is over 30 minutes, then glaze in the last 15 minutes. Adding a glaze or barbecue sauce, especially one with a high sugar content, too early in the cooking process can cause meat to burn and stick to the grill.

Bonus tips!

Never flatten meat with a spatula. This will release the juices, resulting in a dry burgers and steaks. Excess grease dripping down into the grill base can also cause flare-ups.

Avoid putting cold foods on the grill. Bringing meat to temperature on the counter for 30 minutes will help it cook more evenly. Grilling tips provided courtesy of www.whitneybond.com.

STATEWIDERecently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new availability of funds from the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program created by the Inflation Reduction Act. The State of Maine an-

nounced that it would be participating in the new program that provides flexible planning resources for state agencies to develop and implement solutions to protect the public from climate pollution and advance environmental justice.

“We know that tackling the climate crisis demands a sense

SOLVES YOUR WATER PROBLEMS!

of urgency to protect people and the planet,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “The Inflation Reduction Act is an historic opportunity to provide communities across the country with the resources they need to protect people from harmful climate pollution and improve our economy. These Climate Pollution Reduction Grants are an important first step to equip communities with the resources to create innovative strategies that reduce climate emissions and drive benefits across the country.”

“Through our climate action plan, Maine has made strong progress in reducing emissions, advancing clean energy, and protecting Maine’s people, infrastructure and environment

from climate change,” said Governor Janet Mills. “This funding from the Inflation Reduction Act will allow us to continue our work and ensure that Maine remains a leader in addressing climate change.”

“Effectively addressing climate change impacts is the greatest challenge of our generation. EPA is very pleased to partner with the State of Maine to find ways to lower carbon emissions, increase the resiliency of our communities to withstand the impacts of a changing climate, and ensure that historically underserved communities are getting the investments and environmental protection they deserve,” said EPA New England Regional Administrator David W. Cash. “We know that innovations driven from environmental challenges can reap major benefits for our communities and

our economy.”

Maine is among the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico that are eligible to receive money in grant funds. The state will use the funds through the Maine Climate Council to update its climate action plan in collaboration with towns, cities and Tribal governments, and by conducting meaningful engagement with low income and disadvantaged communities throughout Maine.

Later this year, EPA will launch a competition for funding to implement projects and initiatives included in the plans, which Maine is eligible to receive. The state can use the additional funding to develop further strategies to achieve clean energy, climate, and environmental justice goals.

The CPRG planning grants will support states, territories, Tribes, municipalities and air agencies, in the creation of strategies for reducing pollution and ensuring that investments maximize benefits, especially for low-income and disadvantaged communities. The climate plans will include: greenhouse gas emissions inventories; emissions projections and reduction targets; economic, health, and social benefits to low-income and disadvantaged communities; addressing workforce needs to support decarbonization and a clean energy economy.

EPA Regional Offices are expected to award and administer the funding agreements by this upcoming summer.

Those interested in participating in the parade this year, can complete

an application at htt ps://adobe. ly/3KVXlVY. The Town of Ogunquit has had challenges finding participants this year; any response is greatly appreciated.

Wells Parade kickoff begins promptly at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 29. The parade will march from Wells High School, down Sanford Road, to Ocean View Cemetery where the ceremony will take place. Participants will include the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Wells Lodge #2738, the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of America, the junior and high school marching bands, and the firefighters, police officers, and support personnel of Wells. Select Boardmember Timothy Roche will perform as Master of

Ceremonies. During the ceremony, the Town of Wells will honor the graves of brothers Elbridge and Leroy Hanson, Co. I, 3rd Battalion, 39th Regiment, 4th Division, KIA, Meuse-Argonne Offensive, France, October 1918. Musical performances by Atlantic Harmonies will take place.

Veterans and currently serving members of the Armed Forces are invited to join the parade to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for country and freedom, past and present. RSVPs are encouraged, but not required. For details, contact Rebekah Kelley at rkelley@ wellstown.org or 207-361-8130.

York Parade begins promptly at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29. The parade

route will commence at St. Christopher’s Church and York Street, traverse along Route 1A/York Street, and terminate inside First Parish Cemetery. The parade will feature marching bands, color guards, and various other participants.

York is a host town to the USS North Dakota, a Virginia-Class, nuclear powered attack submarine, that is currently undergoing service at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Crew members will be participating in the parade as well.

At the termination point inside First Parish Cemetery, a ceremony will be held featuring guest speaker, retired Lieutenant General Michael Shields of Kennebunkport. A fantastic opportunity to honor and celebrate esteemed veterans.

Wreaths Across America Radio, in conjunction with the Military Women’s Memorial, is proud to announce the airing of its next radio roundtable discussion which was recorded in front of a live audience from the Vaught Center at the Military Women’s Memorial in Arlington, VA. The roundtable discussion will build upon this year’s Wreaths Across America (WAA) theme, “Serve and Succeed,” and addresses employment opportunities for veterans as well as pertinent information for those looking to hire veterans. The roundtable will air exclusively on Wreaths Across America Radio on Wednesday, May 31 at 5 p.m.

The panel discussion was moderated by WAA Executive Director Karen Worcester and the Military Women’s Memorial President, retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Phyllis Wilson. Phyllis served 37 years as an Army Intelligence Officer and was the 5th Command Chief Warrant Officer (CCWO) for the United States Army Reserve. She represented and advised the Chief of the Army Reserve/Commanding General, U.S. Army Reserve Command on matters pertaining to training and education, career management, leadership development and warrior transition issues for warrant officers within the Army Reserve. She was also responsible for coordinating policy and statutory changes to support the advancement of initiatives for the Warrant Officer Corps.

“I feel strongly that in order for us to fulfill our yearlong mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, it is vital that we work with other organizations to identify ways to help our nation’s veterans find suc-

cess once their service in uniform is complete,” said Worcester.

“Our hope is that through these types of discussions we will be able to share resources for veterans, and their families, as they look to transition back into civilian life and offer insight to other organizations and businesses as to why hiring veterans is a good thing for all.”

The discussion provided the opportunity for each panelist to share what pulled them to their chosen career paths and discuss the unique ways their current roles help veterans transitioning into the civilian workforce. Questions from the audience allowed panelists to share tips for businesses looking to hire veterans and military spouses into their workforce and explored how to help veterans be successful in their chosen career paths. Guest panelists include:

Col. David A. Grant, a former United States Army battalion human resources officer and Human Resources Director for the United States Army Cyber Command. Presently, he is the Director of the “A Soldier for Life” program, overseeing initiatives that improve the quality of life for soldiers, veterans, and family members.

Adam Rocke, a retired Army colonel and career infantryman who was a Special Assistant to the Army Chief of Staff, former Director of the “A Soldier for Life” program, and Vice President of Veterans Affairs at FASTPORT Inc. Today, he serves as Senior Director, External Engagements, Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Brad Bentley has had a career in the trucking industry,

including positions in transportation-specific media companies to President of the Truckload Carriers Association. Today, Bentley is president of FASTPORT, a technology company that helps military veterans find meaningful civilian employment. FASTPORT is the Department of Labor’s Industry Intermediary for

the Transportation sector and has placed more than 21,000 people into registered apprenticeship programs since 2017. This is the ninth roundtable broadcast on Wreaths Across America Radio. For more information, visit www. wreathsacrossamerica.org.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLSSafe Haven just rescued an eight-month-old kitty whose owners allowed her outdoors. She was hit by a car and suffered a broken leg, her femur. At the emergency vet, the couple was told the surgery to piece together the break would cost up to $7,000. Another option was to remove the leg altogether, at a lower cost. Unable to afford either surgery, they surrendered the cat to Safe Haven.

Mulan is now recovering from surgery. She is recovering in her tent, and has received physical therapy. Happily, Mulan will soon be able to use all four of her legs and enjoy a

long, healthy life, thanks to Safe Haven and their supporters.

Due to her recovery time, Mulan will not be available for adoption for a few months.

Like groceries and everything else, vet bills increase constantly. Safe Haven works hard to afford all to pay all their vet and operations bills. Meanwhile, they wish everyone would be more careful with their pets’ safety.

Owners who allow their cats to go outside, can possibly

face several thousand dollars in emergency vet bills for accidents that happen. Some might even need to make the decision to euthanize the pet because the surgery might be too expensive. Owners can avoid pain, suffering and a huge amount of guilt by keeping their pets indoors.

Cats are like children, sometimes exploring areas where they should not be. They are fearless, or clueless, and can get caught up in the moment. As neighborhoods grow, more cars end up on the roads and streets,

and the chances are higher that a neighborhood cat could become an accident victim.

No amount of regret for letting pets outdoors will heal a cat’s broken body. The list of missing and lost cats is grow-

ing, and predator attacks are common. Owners can, however, give their pet the best of both worlds, letting it enjoy nature safely.

There are options now to allow pet cats access to the outdoors. “Catios” (outdoor cat pens), training harnesses, and even cat strollers are all popular ways for owners to let their cat safely enjoy fresh air and nature.

Safe Haven has seen too many cats with broken bodies.

Emma’s Angels Rescue

NORTH BERWICK -

We have a beautiful young girl named Ellie this week! Ellie is a nine-month-old, 45 lbs., black/brown, Lab mix from an overcrowded shelter in Louisiana, who is happy and ready to go. She is up-to-date on her vaccinations and spayed. She would do well in any home since she is good with other dogs and kids. She would also make a wonderful walking or hiking companion. Ellie walks great on the leash and is quite comical, as well as a couch potato. If you would like to meet this special girl, call us at 207-676-5599.

Emma’s Angels Rescue is an all-volunteer, foster-based organization in North Berwick. We could use your help getting

more puppy food! We have several puppies, including Ellie, who are on Blue Buffalo puppy food. It can be left in our drop box at 30 Meeting House Road, North Berwick. Thank you for you generosity!

Paul William Christiansen, 80

WELLS – Paul William Christiansen of Burlington,

MA, and of Wells, passed away one day after his 80th birthday on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, following a long battle with cancer.

Paul was born May 15, 1943, in Woburn, MA, the son of Niels and Ellen Mckee Christiansen, and was a graduate of Burlington High School. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard and then followed his three brothers into law enforcement, where he was a police officer of 26 years for the town of Burlington.

With his generous personality, Paul was involved in many community events. He initiated a food pantry for the town of Burlington, “People Helping People,” which is still in operation today. He was the president of the Municipal Employees Credit Union, and was named “Outstanding Citizen of the Year” for the Town of Burlington.

Paul loved to play Santa each season, bringing magic and hope to thousands of children throughout the years.

Paul is predeceased by his three brothers, Kurt, Arnie, and Norman Christiansen, all of Burlington.

He was the beloved husband of Joan Christiansen of Burlington and Wells. He was the loving father of Michael Grady of Andover, MA, Heather Clements of Charlton, MA, Niels Christiansen of Lowell, and Michelle Grady and Lynne Ayvasian. Paul was also a wonderful stepfather to Ellen Sargent (deceased) of Concord, NH, Mark Mckeon of Nashua, NH, and Stacey Mckeon of Methuen, MA. He was the devoted brother to Carl Christiansen, also of Burlington.

An hour of visitation will be held at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, on Friday, May 26, at 11 a.m., followed by a funeral service at the chapel beginning at 12 p.m.

Joseph Paul Mauro, 87

KENNEBUNK – Joseph Paul Mauro died at age 87 on May 14, 2023. He was the ninth of nine children born to Italian immigrants who had set sail for Ellis Island in search of a better life, and found their new home

in Berlin, NH, where Joe was born. As a youngster, Joe found delight and refuge in fine art and literature, classical music and Red Sox baseball, which he would score meticulously while listening to radio broadcasts. These loves would last his lifetime.

Joe studied English Literature the University of New Hampshire, where he found a community of kindred spirits. He then settled in southern coastal Maine, where he started his family and worked a wide range of professions, including his dream pursuit of antique book and art dealing. Joe eschewed a traditional career path in favor of what he deemed the finer things and simpler pleasures. For decades, he could be found along the southern Seacoast hosting cultural events, writing for local newspapers, volunteering at a cat adoption center, or feeding seagulls on Ogunquit Beach.

Joe leaves his former wife Penelope; son Timothy; daughter Alice; grandsons, Caden and Damon; and a lasting memory of an eccentric scholar and artlover for all who came to marvel at this colorful soul. He will be dearly missed.

A drop-in memorial gathering will be held at Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main Street, Kennebunk, on Saturday, May 27, 2-4 p.m. Feel free to call Alice with any questions at 617840-6818.
