Space-Themed Fundraiser Features Talk with Astronaut

KITTERYThunderbird pilot, SpaceX astronaut, and New Hampshire native Scott Poteet (pictured) will give a talk on his experiences on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 at the Star Theatre in Kittery. The event will be “fireside chat” style, with great visuals and frequent opportunities for audience interaction. The talk is a fundraiser for the Earth, Sea & Space Center project. There will also be a silent auction of space-themed art.

A special reception will also be held 6:30-7:15 p.m. that night, with a limited number of tickets sold. Those attending

the reception will enjoy dessert and a chance to have one-on-one time with Poteet.

Flying is as natural as breathing to the retired Lieutenant Colonel, who has been taking F-16 fighter jets to the skies since graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1996. He has patrolled the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, and flew combat missions over Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. In 2007 and 2008, Poteet rocketed into the blue with the Thunderbirds, the Air Force’s elite precision team, executing breathtaking maneuvers in his supersonic Falcon while often flying only 18 inches apart from his teammates.

Now retired from the Air Force, Poteet has his eyes fixed on an even broader horizon: a trip to space. He will serve as mission pilot for “Polaris Dawn,” guiding SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket closer to the moon than the United States has been since NASA’s Apollo missions of the 1970s. The mission is scheduled for this year.

Growing up in the 1980s, Poteet was inspired by movies such as “Top Gun” and “The Right Stuff,” but he never thought he would add “astronaut” to his resume. “Being an astronaut is the pinnacle of the pyramid when it comes to

flight,” he explains. “Historically, astronauts exemplify the best and brightest in physical, mental and technical achievement. NASA’s criteria is very strict and the standards are very high. However, few people can meet those standards. If we are to truly explore and understand space, we need more dedicated people up there. Private exploration opens the door for those who have skills in key areas to help gather critical information. I was surprised and honored to find a door opening for me. I am keenly aware that I am stand-

GWRLT Meeting Highlights Accessibility with Enock Glidden

NORTH BERWICKGreat Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) will hold its annual members meeting and potluck dinner at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the North Berwick Community Center, 266 Lebanon Road, North Berwick. The meeting is not only a terrific opportunity for the public to meet with fellow members and enjoy a traditional potluck together, but is also a forum to have voices heard and votes

counted regarding GWRLT business.

The business agenda includes the President’s report, Treasurer’s report, nominations for the Board of Directors, and an introduction from new Executive Director, Jordan Kelley. Unique to this year’s proceedings is a public keynote presentation by local adventurer and accessibility advocate, Enock Glidden (pictured), at 6:30 p.m., with a reception and Q&A to

follow afterwards.

Growing up near Baxter State Park with Spina Bifida, Glidden has always had a strong connection to the outdoors, striking a healthy blend of peace and challenge in his pursuits.

As an athlete, he maintains an impressive Curriculum Vitae, having climbed the Zodiac route of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park and as a member of the Maine Adaptive Ski Racing team, among others. Currently,

Enok’s sights are set on climbing a summit at Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State, but this objective is far from the limit of his vision. He is also an Accessibility Ambassador with Maine Trail Finder, providing trail assessments and notes on GWRLT accessibility. Subsequently, his work is intricately tied to conservation and the role land trusts play in the

OGUNQUIT -

April marks the final month of Ogunquit Performing Arts

(OPI) 21st Annual Classic Film Festival. The four April films offer a musical series, released between 1954 and 1969. The musicals feature several well-known actors who have also starred in multiple stage and “non-musical” films, among them: Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine, Audrey Hepburn, Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, Jean Seberg, and movie musical favorites Howard Keel and Jane Powell.

Can Can (1960), April 2

Adapted from a 1953 Broad-

way musical comedy, “Can Can” is set in 1896 Montmarte, Paris, and stars Shirley MacLaine, Frank Sinatra, Louis Jourdan and Maurice Chevalier. The Can Can (a dance where women lift

their skirts) is banned by law as lewd and lascivious. However, the proprietor of the cabaret club Bal du Paradis (MacLaine) has it performed every day. Law enforcement personnel look the other way, even attending performances, due to the persuasive charms of the club’s female employees.

My Fair Lady (1964), April 16 George Cukor’s elegant, colorful adaptation of the beloved 1956 Broadway stage play of the same name, in turn based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 stage play “Pygmalion,” is set in 1912 London. A snobbish pho-

netics professor (Rex Harrison), agrees to a wager that he can transform the speech and manners of Cockney flower girl Eliza (Audrey Hepburn, pictured to the left) and pass her off to high society as a duchess. The film has the honor of being the most expensive film shot in the United States up to that time ($17 million), was the recipient of eight Oscars, and was nominated for many other film awards.

Autism Awareness 5K Fun Run Workshop to Address Accessing High-Speed Internet

YORK COUNTYArea residents are urged to attend a public meeting on Tuesday, April 4, 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at York County Community College, 112 College Drive, Wells, to share their experience with technology and internet access.

Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission is holding the community listening workshop that will set the

stage for future state and federal investments in broadband infrastructure across southern Maine and the state at large.

This new coalition is working to expand access to high-speed internet service while ensuring that people who lack financial resources or technical skills will also benefit. A major influx of federal tax dollars is supporting the effort.

“Internet access is now a critical part of civic engagement and participation, employment and access to essential services, such as telehealth and education,” said Project Manager James Rather, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission. “Access to the internet is so important to function in society now. We don’t want to leave anyone behind.”

Expanding broadband access is the goal of a new, federally funded Regional and Tribal Broadband Partners Program, which the Maine Connectivity Authority administers.

The Maine Connectivity Authority is asking residents to take a survey to help the state understand what infrastructure investments are important to residents. Residents can find the

YORKYork High School’s NeuroDiversity Club for Autism

Awareness is hosting a 5K Fun Run at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, to celebrate individuals with Autism, their friends, and families. In addition to the run, there will be a DJ, raffles, swag bags for the first 100 participants, bubble party, and more!

NeuroDiversity Club was started as a student-led initiative to promote inclusion, accep-

survey at www.smpdc.org. According to Rather, it is estimated that only 4% of the population in southern Maine meets the state and federal threshold for high speed broadband.

The program will support community-driven planning efforts to develop solutions for expanding broadband infrastructure and assuring everyone has

tance, and awareness of Autism and neurodiversity in the community. To fundraise for the club and to generate acceptance and awareness, the club is holding its first annual Autism Awareness 5K Fun Run at York High School, 1 Robert Stevens Drive, York.

“Unlike all other types of our country’s infrastructure, such as roads, water, and sewer, the backbone of our digital infrastructure is owned by private companies. The pathway to digital equity will be universal access to high capacity broadband, which must become nonnegotiable. In the meantime

Library and Museum Celebrate the Young Child

KENNEBUNKThe Kennebunk Free Library (KFL) announces its upcoming exhibition, “Celebrating the Young Child,” the artwork of the Pre-Kindergarten students at Kennebunk Elementary School (KES).

The exhibit is in recognition of “The Week of the Young Child,” an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The purpose is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families, and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. The 2023 Week of the Young Child runs April 1-7.

RSU 21 has a large public Pre-K program at Kennebunk Elementary, and they are pleased to be sharing the students’ artwork as part of this important focus on young children. The students in Pre-K at KES have enjoyed making art since the first day of school. Educators at KES believe in the process of exploring materials in order to learn more about the world, and art is one way to

do so. The school has seven classrooms of students, and each class selected their own focus for the artwork. The public will be treated to a variety of subjects and processes when visiting the exhibit.

KFL is happy to display artwork by these budding artists. The public is invited to view the exhibit April 4-28 in the library’s Speers Gallery at 112 Main St., Kennebunk, during regular library hours when the gallery is not in use for library programs. For more information, www.kennebunkli-

brary.org.

The Brick Store Museum is also celebrating National Week of the Young Child, with a free event for young children and their families that includes story time and a children’s concert.

Starting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, Pulitzer Prizewinning author Barbara Walsh will read aloud her recent children’s book, “The Lobster Lady.” At 11 a.m., award-winning children’s musician Sammie Haynes of TreeTops Music will perform

an interactive music concert. This event is free and open to children and their families. While visiting the museum, families are invited to explore the museum’s newest exhibition honoring young artists, the Kennebunk Elementary School Art Show, which runs through April 9.

The Brick Store Museum focuses on local history, art and

cultures of the Kennebunks and its surrounding communities. Its collections hold over 70,000 artifacts relating to regional history. The museum is open year-round, and offers rotating exhibitions, monthly educational programs and tours, historic preservation and archaeology projects, and community events. The more one works with cats, the more one may realize how sensitive they are. That can be true of any animal, but cats are particularly intuitive. They know how to read the energy in the air, in their human, and definitely in

their home environment. For this reason, we have kept a “work in progress” litter of kittens in the loving care of our foster volunteer, Janet. Janet rescued this litter of kittens from a rural property. Unfortunately, we did not have room for them right away. The kittens were feral, and fortunately Janet has feral cat experience. She also has a big heart, and offered to foster them for us. Those interested in adopting from this litter will meet them in their trusted environment in Janet’s home.

Janet feels that beautiful Otter, with his copper colored eyes, is most ready for adoption.

Otter has developed a very playful personality! With his sibling Tuna by his side, the two continue helping each other find confidence and comfort for when it is time to leave their foster home and each other. Tuna is also sweet and very cuddly at night.

As always, we are committed to finding the best match for each cat’s personality and emotional needs, so that a successful adoption will last a lifetime. We know from experience that these kittens will need a quiet home with someone who is sensitive to their shy nature.

Anyone with a nurturing personality and who enjoys the wonders and rewards of helping a kitty learn to be brave, happy, and secure, can check out Otter and Tuna on our Petfinder page. For more details, call Nancy, our Cat Health Manager, at the number listed in the info block to the left.

Beginning April 4, our receiving area will be open 4-7 p.m. on Tuesdays. The shop will not

be open. This is to accommodate those who cannot bring their donations on Saturdays, 12-3 p.m. Thank you in advance!

Spring is Here!

“Autumn arrives in the early morning, but spring at the close of a winter’s day,” wrote Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973).

Winter’s nip is still in the air, but spring has arrived! Snow goes away and crocus soon dot the garden beds, while signs of daffodils and tulips start to emerge. The smell of clean garden soil wafts along as the snow melts in all those stubborn spots. While it is still a bit too early to start planting, getting ready is now key.

Hopefully during the winter months some time was spent planning. If not, there is still plenty of time. The local nurseries will begin stocking during the month of April. April and May are great months to plant perennials. In the coming days, draw out a plan, make a list of plants to purchase, or hire a professional garden designer to help if needed.

Planting in steps is a great way to go. Consult local nursery websites to select plants on the list, not only by light requirements, size and color, but also by bloom time. It is nice to have some of the garden in bloom from April to November. Start with getting the early bloomers purchased and planted first so they can be enjoyed while they are in bloom. Lily of the valley, phlox, allium, dicentra (bleeding heart), baptisia, and peonies are a small sample of early blooming perennials. Planting through the end of June is ideal, but new plants can go in the ground throughout the summer as long as they are watered regularly.

Once the plants are decided on, make sure the garden bed is ready. When it warms up a bit, and the soil is pliable down to about a couple of feet, turn over any leaves that spent the winter harboring essential bugs, and mix them into the soil to allow them to decompose in the garden bed. If there is a quite a heap of leaves leftover from fall, move them to the compost pile. Adding horse or cow manure or compost to the soil each spring will contribute to strong root growth and healthy plants.

The fun begins when that first shoveled area receives a prized perennial! Plant according to instructions included with the plant. If those are not included, again, local nursery websites are a great resource for planting information. Regardless of the plant, it is important to dig the hole twice as deep and

wide as the root ball. Once dug, fill with water, it should drain fairly quickly. If not, there is likely a large rock, ledge or clay

soil clogging up the works. If clay soil is the culprit, dig a bit deeper, add more compost to the clay to loosen the soil, then plant. Rocks are pretty typical in New England gardens and can be either easy or a real pill to remove. Gardening is not without challenges! Ledge can be dealt with plants that grow well under those conditions.

Traditionally, shorter plants go to the front of the garden bed, with graduating sizes to the rear. However, it is okay to mix it up, planting something tall in spots along the garden bed for visual interest, weaving with plants of various sizes. The great thing about gardening is that you can change things around throughout the season if desired. The most important thing is to enjoy the time outdoors and the magic as it unfolds over the coming days and weeks of the most glorious time of year here in New England.

Childbirth Ed. Virtual Classes

YORKYork Hospital is excited to announce the continuation of Childbirth Education classes provided to its patients. Due to the pandemic, the hospital temporarily paused all childbirth education offerings. In partnership with Birthly, York Hospital is offering valuable, educational resources, to their patients in the comfort of their own homes beginning Monday, April 3.

Through the partnership, York Hospital’s patients are now able to access a variety of childbirth and infant care classes online. All classes are live, which means patients will have the opportunity to connect through a live video feed with certified and experienced childbirth educators. Birthly educators will provide interactive teaching on a variety of top-of-mind topics and patients will have dedicated time to ask questions. York Hospital patients will be provided with a code to access these classes at a 50% discount.

Classes currently offered include Early Pregnancy Preparations, Prenatal Education Bootcamp, Coping and Comfort, Breastfeeding 101, as well as Newborn Care. Since each class type is offered multiple times a month, patients now have more flexibility in choosing a time that fits their schedule and can attend classes anywhere virtually via their laptop, tablet, and other mobile devices.

“Throughout the pandemic we learned that our mothers and fathers are looking for programs that allow them the flexibility to participate in interactive, live, birthing programs from home – at times that fit their changing schedules. Our childbirth educators are certified and experienced, and our patients and partners will have many opportunities to benefit from their expertise,” said Interim Director of Birthing & Family Care Pam Heithoff, RNC-OB, C-EFM, BSN, MBA, NE-BC.

The five-day Polaris Dawn mission is multi-faceted. The craft will try to reach the highest Earth orbit in the history of human space flight, reaching an initial apogee of 1,400 kilometers, breaking the Gemini 11 record. The crew is also slated to touch the lower part of the Inner van Allen Belt, an area astronauts have not been in 64 years. This area has concerned NASA space scientists because of possible significant radiation exposure. However, going through

Polaris Dawn will skim along the edge, and the crew will receive about as much radiation as through a total body CT scan, according to Poteet. Nonetheless, radiation levels and impacts will be monitored for further study. The crew will also perform the first commercial space walk or EVA (Extravehicular activity) and the first using SpaceX suits.

A major part of Polaris Dawn’s five-day mission focuses on medical science and research that will help scientists better understand the challenges of long-term space flight and the

The Polaris Dawn mission will also test SpaceX’s new StarLink laser communications system. These inter-satellite laser links will reduce the need for ground-based satellite connections and will be essential as astronauts travel further away from Earth.

The Polaris Dawn mission has a strong philanthropic component, thanks to its partnership with St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the world’s premier pediatric cancer treatment center. The Inspiration4 flight raised more than $240 million for St. Jude, and the medical

This planning work on the regional level will lay the groundwork for that effort, helping state officials make decisions about how best to expand access by getting input from local communities and organizations that best understand their opportunities and needs.

The federal Infrastructure and Jobs Act provides funding towards building high-speed internet infrastructure nationwide. Digital equity is a critical component of the effort, the goal being to provide access to everyone, taking into account affordability, access to devices, digital skills, and internet safety. Leading the initiative in York County and a portion of Oxford County, the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission is partnering with multiple Maine agencies on the project. Eliot Route 236 Sewer and Water Project Information Meeting

A s a result of years of planning and designing, the Town of Eliot is beginning construction of the Route 236 Water and Sewer Project. This Project aims to increase economic development potential while protecting our environment.

The Project will install water and sewer infrastructure along Route 236 and other roads in the vicinity, and install sewer force mains along portions of Beech and State Roads. New pump stations will be built on Route 236 and Beech Road near Great Creek. The force main pipeline will convey wastewater along Beech Road and State Road to connect to the Town’s existing gravity sewer system on State Road by Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The Project is funded primarily by the Route 236 Tax Increment Financing District (TIF or TIF District), with the assistance of the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund, administered by the Maine Municipal Bond Bank and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

The contractor for the first phase of the Project is DeFelice Corporation. Later this year, bids for future phases of the Project along Route 236 will be advertised. Construction engineering will be provided by Underwood Engineers, and the Town’s (Owner’s) Project Manager is Tighe & Bond. The project team has a great deal of experience in water and sewer line construction and will be working continuously to minimize traffic and access disruptions throughout the Project. Your patience is greatly appreciated with these disruptions as we upgrade this area of our community that will serve us for decades to come.

Here’s how you can stay informed:

1. Attend a Project Information Meeting on Thursday, April 6, 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Town Hall. A remote videoconference participation option will also be available.

2. Look for project updates on the Town’s website: https://www.eliotmaine.org/.

3. Sign up to receive emailed project progress updates, including where work is being done and any expected construction traffic control measures (e.g., lane closures). Sign up by emailing a request to rt236project@eliotme.org.

For questions and more information, email rt236project@eliotme.org.

sky from the 1951 Broadway musical of the same name, the film is set in a mining camp in California during the Gold Rush era where the “wild, wild west” comes alive. Upon the discovery of gold while digging a grave, prospector Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) stakes a claim to the burial site. He adopts the surviving, injured brother as his “Pardner” (Clint Eastwood) while he recuperates from his injuries in the accident which killed his brother. As more prospectors arrive, a tent city, known as No Name City, springs up. Polygamy, brothels, gambling, drunkenness, saloon fights, and the destruction of an entire town follow, all set to a great musical score.

Jaws (1975), Sunday, May 7

Everyone’s favorite beach movie, this Steven Spielberg classic stars Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and The Shark. The summertime thriller about a great white shark attacking beachgoers at a summer resort town, was based on the novel by Peter Benchley, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Carl Gottlieb. Benchley was inspired by several real-life incidents in writing his novel “Jaws,” such as the 1916 Jersey shore attacks that left four people dead

over the course of twelve days. Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and Robert Redford were originally considered for the leading roles, but producer David Brown knew the movie required no stars: “The star of this movie was a fish.” The ominous music by John Williams also contributed in no small measure to the great success of the film.

future of accessibility.

Glidden has noted, “I have seen a major movement over the past two years that I have been involved with many land trusts. They are now approaching trail building and land development from the standpoint of accessibility. There have been a large number of accessible trail projects started or completed, and many more are planned for the future.”

Welcoming all to experience GWRLT’s unique landscape firsthand is an integral aspect of the organization’s work. As a land trust, GWRLT has the opportunity to learn how to increase a positive impact for those often excluded from the outdoor experience. Speaking to the current state of inclusion in the local outdoor recreation community, Glidden continues: “I think there is a better understanding that the outdoors should be for all people. There are a lot of grassroots efforts to reach out to all communities in order to facilitate more access to the outdoors. I have been a part of many conversations around this topic from the perspective of people with disabilities but also other communities.”

GWRLT is extremely ex-

A time of visitation was held at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, on Sunday, March 19, 12-2 p.m., with a time for sharing memories at 1:30 p.m. Spring interment will be held in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Rollinsford, NH. Friends who wish may donate in her memory to Emma’s Angels Rescue, Another Chance Animal Rescue, or Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer.
