Veteran Thanks Joe Andruzzi Foundation by Giving Back KITTERY The Joe Andruzzi Foundation (JAF), provides help, hope, and a reason to smile for New England cancer patients and their families through financial support when it is needed most. The Longo family of Stratham, NH, hosted a fundraiser for the foundation at Loco Coco’s Tacos in Kittery on Tuesday, February 6. The event, which was attended by more than 100 supporters, raised over $3,000 to support JAF’s mission. Rudy Longo, 92, is a JAF

Extraordinary Needs recipient and Korean War veteran. In August of 2023, Rudy re-

ceived a new refrigerator after his stopped working, courtesy of the foundation. A few weeks

later, JAF Chief Engagement Officer Joe Andruzzi and the foundation team visited Longo again and filled his refrigerator with groceries. “It’s not often that a JAF patient has the opportunity to pay it forward in such a meaningful way,” said Andruzzi. “Rudy and his daughter coordinated this fundraiser for us so that we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of cancer patients and their families. To Rudy, it was his way of saying thank you for the help he

received.” In 2023, nearly $1.3 million was distributed in direct assistance to help patients and their families throughout New England with financial assistance to pay for housing, transportation, utilities, food, insurance, and other household expenses. Local Fourth Grader Shares Heart Health Story By John Crommett, Copy Editor YORK As part of the month-long celebration of Heart Awareness Month, Coastal Ridge Elementary School (CRES) in York recently held a school assembly for their annual fundraiser, the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge. Each February for the past 25 years, CRES has participated in the annual fundraiser. The goal? To educate others about heart health and to help raise money for kids born with chronic heart conditions. D u r i ng t he a sse mbly, members of each class came up to the podium and gave talks recounting their personal interpretations of the meaning behind such words as “compas-

sion,” “perseverance,” “honesty,” and “empathy,” and how these words apply to their lives. Fourth grader Wesley Ethridge then took to the podium to talk about his experience living with heart issues. Wesley was born with a congenital heart condition that required emergency surgery when he was just six days old; his first surgery was at Boston Children’s Hospital to fix a narrowing in his aortic arch. Three weeks later, doctors performed another surgery to patch a hole in the wall of his heart and to place a band on his pulmonary artery to redirect blood flow. At a checkup appointment in 2015,

Wesley’s family learned that he would require another emergency surgery: a full heart transplant. That surgery happened that Mother’s Day, May 10. Wesley expressed gratitude for his heart as he shared his experience with his classmates. “I love my heart,” he said, reflecting on the gift of life it has given him. “And, I love my life,” he added, emphasizing his appreciation to his classmates and his family, who were also in attendance. in March of 1993. Eighteen years after his wish, 32-yearold Robbie ended up a guest at Make-A-Wish Maine’s Fantasy Auction, and helped present wish child Jacob with his own ATV wish. The average cost of a wish is $7,000. All wish expenses are fully covered, including travel

and spending money. The goal is to provide the child and family with a worry-free experience. Make-A-Wish Maine raises funds through the generosity of individuals and businesses, and events conducted by both the organization and by outside community groups. The telethon is an annual

event organized by the Make-AWish Foundation to raise funds and awareness for children battling critical illnesses. Throughout the broadcast, viewers will be moved by stories of wish recipients whose dreams were made possible through the generosity of donors. The telethon showcases the transformative power of granting wishes, inspiring viewers to contribute and help bring joy and hope to children across the state. Lecture Examines Maine’s Role in the Slave Trade

SOUTH BERWICK Old Berwick Historical Society (OBHS) will present an online lecture by historian Dr. Kate McMahon which will explore the history of Maine and the illegal slave trade, and the deep investment Mainers had in the economies of enslavement. The lecture is on Thursday, February 22 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. No registration is required to view the lecture. In 1820, the United States passed an act that made participation on the slave trade an act of piracy. Yet, dozens of Maine ves-

sels engaged in the slave trade illegally during this period. Thousands of enslaved people were transported and traded, leading to huge profits for slave traders, some of whom were Maine sea captains who are remembered as leading citizens of the day. Much of the millions of dollars from the slave trade funded the growth of New England’s economy. Dr. Kate McMahon received her B.A. in Art History and M.A. in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine. She completed her PhD in History at

YORK Maine author and curler David Florig will read from and discuss his novel, “The Stones of Ailsa Craig,” on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 p.m. at York Public Library (YPL). Florig’s historical fiction novel, set in present-day Belfast, Maine, and in 1880s Scotland, centers around the ancient Scottish sport of curling and features a foreword by Olympic curler Tara Peterson. Although curling provides the context, the book will appeal to fans of historical fiction and mysteries.

To help conserve west and central Africa’s tropical forests and forest elephants, the Elephant Listening Project (ELP) utilizes passive acoustic monitoring. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a technique used to study underwater environments by listening to natural sounds, such as marine mammal vocalizations, vessel noise, and environmental phenomena. It involves deploying hydrophones or underwater microphones to passively record these sounds over extended periods without actively emitting any signals. PAM is valuable for various applications,

including marine mammal research, oceanographic studies, and monitoring human activities in marine ecosystems. By analyzing the recorded sounds, researchers can gain insights into the behavior, distribution, and health of marine life, as well as track anthropogenic impacts on the marine environment. Research Analyst Bobbi Estabrook will detail how the ELP enhances conservation outcomes through data-driven decision-making. This involves evaluating the effectiveness of anti-poaching strategies, mentoring researchers, and sharing the intricacies of forest elephant life to help foster awareness. Estabrook joined the ELP

team in 2021. She conducts acoustic analyses, manages and carries out research projects and mentors the students who join the lab each semester. Bobbi first touched base with ELP in 2007, when she attended the first ever Sound Analysis Workshop. With more than ten years of experience using PAMs to understand the ecology of baleen whales, Bobbi’s current research focuses on the acoustic ecology of African forest elephants and the effects of human activities on their vocal behavior. “40 Whacks” Presentation at BPL BERWICK Kids today may still on occasion recite the rhyme about the infamous Lizzie Borden: “Lizzie Borden took an axe / And gave her mother forty whacks / When she saw what she had done / She gave her father forty-one.” But mysteries about this fascinating character in American folklore still remain. Born July 19, 1860, Lizzie Andrew Borden was tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, MA. No one else was charged in the murders, and, despite ostracism from area residents, Borden spent the remainder of her life in Fall River. She died in 1927 of pneumonia at the age of 66, just days before the death of her older sister, Emma. The Borden murders and trial received widespread publicity throughout the United States and, along with Borden herself, they remain a topic in American popular culture to the present day. They have been depicted in numerous films, theatrical productions, literary works, and folk rhymes that are still very wellknown in the Fall River area. “Dear Sarah” at Museum KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum announces a special pop-up program featuring a live play on Saturday, February 24. “Dear Sarah” uses love letters written by Kennebunk ship Captain Charles Barry to his wife, Sarah, between 1846 and 1850. The play uses archival letters written between 1846 and 1850 by Charles and Sarah Barry, a married couple living in Kennebunk. A ship’s captain, Charles was often away at sea, and so would write letters back to his wife at home. “Dear Sarah” pulls pieces from the many letters Charles sent to his wife, weaving them together into a heartwarming story about a love that spans all distance. The play stars historical re-enactors Michael Maler and Diane Lent, who bring the story to life. Participants will also be

able to view artifacts owned by the Barrys that are now in the Brick Store Museum’s collections. Proceeds from the pop-up performance support the museum’s educational mission. More Help for PPP, COVID EIDL Borrowers NATIONWIDE The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has announced expanded flexibility and accommodations for COVID EIDL and PPP borrowers to help bring them into compliance and avoid the repercussions of defaulting on a government loan. For COVID EIDL and PPP borrowers with loans under $100,000, the SBA has implemented a 60-day goodwill exception period lasting through March 3, 2024. During this period, the SBA will build on its outreach to affected businesses. This includes ensuring that PPP borrowers understand the forgiveness application process and that COVID EIDL borrowers are informed about available repayment options, such as hardship repayment plans.

Small business borrowers in delinquency or default who take action and obtain good standing with the SBA will improve their long-term financial health substantially. The benefits of getting, and staying, current on SBA loans include better credit scores, which make it cheaper and easier to buy a home or car in the future; eligibility for future government financial assistance, like a VA loan or help after a natural disaster; and, in some cases, avoidance of federal and private collections activities which can include withholding tax returns and wage garnishment. PPP borrowers can avoid default and the repercussions that come along with it without repaying the loan. Those who have met the payroll requirements can simply complete the PPP forgiveness application, which takes most borrowers less than 15 minutes. If

Understanding Your FEMA Letter STATEWIDE Survivors who applied for assistance from FEMA after the severe storm and flooding from December 17-21, 2023, will soon receive, or may have already received, an eligibility letter from FEMA in the mail or via email. The letter will explain application status and how to respond going forward. Recipients are encouraged to read their letPPP borrowers are unsure if their loan has been forgiven, they can check by logging in to the MySBA loan portal. Bill to Fast Track Combat Veterans’ Access to Health Care NATIONWIDE U. S. Se n ator A ng u s King, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, recently introduced legislation to give combat veterans the option to enroll in their health care benefits program before officially transitioning out of active duty, seeking to ensure no lag in coverage for servicemembers. The bipartisan Combat Veterans Pre-Enrollment Act would create an opt-in program allowing transitioning servicemembers to access VA health care services their first day as a civilian. Currently, transitioning servicemembers must wait until they have left the service and received their official separation paperwork – which can take months – to apply for Veterans Health Administration (VHA) health care and other services, creating an unacceptable period where veterans do not have access to the health care ben-

Lauriann Della Bernarda Beach, 65 WELLS – Lauriann Della Bernarda Beach died unexpectedly at home on November 30, 2023, at 65 years old. Lauriann was born on February 22, 1958, in Hartford, CT. She graduated from East Windsor High School in 1976 and went on to attend Morse School of Business, where she graduated with a degree as a Legal Paralegal. Lauriann worked for several law offices in that capacity. Lauriann moved to Maine full time in 2020. She enjoyed riding on the back of husband Ed’s motorcycle, feeding the birds, cooking, and arranging gatherings for the commemoration of birthdays and holidays. Lauriann is survived by her mother Alice Kessler; husband Edward Beach and his children, Josh and Hillary; daughter Veronica Gorbet; long-time partner Michael Drozd and their children, Jaden, Logan, and Brennan; siblings, Paula Della Bernarda, Richard S. He enjoyed puttering in the yard, tinkering with his lawn mowers and tractors, and collecting and recycling cans. But spending time with his family brought him the most joy. Arthur was a life-time member of the American Legion Post #7 of Rochester, NH, the Riverside Grange in Lebanon, and the York Pomona Grange. Arthur was predeceased by his loving wife, Phyllis E. He was born on June 4, 1959, in Troy, NY, to Peter and Patricia (Jensen) Van Loan. Er nest, af fec t iona l ly known as Ernie, was a graduate of Edward Little High School in Auburn. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in forestry. Ernie later obtained his master’s degree in accounting from University of Southern Maine, and became a CPA soon after. He spent much of his work career at the Internal Revenue Service, first as a revenue agent and then as an appeals officer. Ernie loved sports, traveling,

birding and golf. He loved his foodie trips with his wife Pat, trying all the new restaurants and re-visiting old ones. Horse racing was also one of his loves, which included owning a racehorse. Hiking the Alps and local mountains was just another passion for a man that did not seem to sit still. Ernie was a man of honor always stayed true to his values. He was a man of strong faith, and was generous above and beyond measure with his family, friends and community. Ernie will be sorely missed by many. He lives in our hearts and will continue to inspire us by the way he lived his life. Ernie is predeceased by brothers, Richard and David Van Loan. Improving Cybersecurity for Health Care

NATIONWIDE U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME), Co-Chair of the Cybersecurity Solarium Commission and a member of the Senate Armed Services (SASC) and Intelligence Committees (SSCI), and Senator Marco Rubio (RFL), recently introduced legislation to protect U.S. healthcare systems from hackers and other bad actors. The Strengthening Cybersecurity in Health Care Act would require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) perform consistent evaluations of its cybersecurity systems, and provide biannual reports on its current practices and progress on future safety procedures they are working to implement. Recent reporting has indicated an exponential increase in cybersecurity attacks against healthcare systems across the country, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In 2023, approximately 133 million people had their health data, such as Medicare benef iciar y data, social security numbers, and medical records breached. As the agency tasked with keeping Americans’ personal health information safe, HHS must be

equipped to combat the latest hacking strategies. “In recent years, several of Maine’s major healthcare providers have been the victims of cyberattacks. This threat to America’s critical infrastructure is real, and could literally mean the difference between life and death – we must take proactive steps to enhance the cybersecurity of our healthcare and public health sectors,” said Senator King. “The bipartisan Strengthening Cybersecurity in Health Care Act would help ensure that health institutions have the resources to keep patient data safe. Voters Oppose New Taxes, Fees on Streaming Services STATEWIDE A recent statewide poll found that registered Maine voters overwhelmingly oppose proposed legislation – LD 1967 – that seeks to impose new taxes and fees on streaming services for Maine consumers. LD 1967 could increase costs for Maine consumers by up to 40%. The poll, conducted by the Saint Anselm College Survey Center, found that 69% of voters are against the new streaming tax and only 15% support it. The results are based on online surveys of 938 Maine registered voters collected November

The station will be active from Monday, February 19 to Friday, February 23, and is an exciting chance to contribute to the collective work in protecting

endangered animals. Toward the end of 2023, the aquarium welcomed two California sea lions, Gio and Farley. The 15-year-old sea lions are now permanent residents in the aquarium’s New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center, and join three other California sea lions: Zoe, Sierra, and Tipper. Daily presentations have returned to the marine mammal center at 12 p.m. and

2 p.m., when visitors can see the sea lions interacting with their trainers. The aquarium also recently welcomed a nurse shark, Cirri, to its ocean tank, continuing a decades-long commitment of caring for and protecting shark species. The 3.5-foot, 22-pound shark joins Myrtle, the aquarium’s famous green sea turtle, cownose rays, eels, and hundreds of colorful reef fish in the Carib-

bean coral reef exhibit. The Simons Theatre is currently showing “Arctic: Our Frozen Planet,” a 45-minute documentary filmed on a scale never attempted before. The film captures a year-long adventure across the seasons in the Arctic, and the subsequent impact a changing climate has had on it. Also showing: “Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D,” “Great White Shark 3D,” “Incredible

All of her kittens were eventually adopted, and now Boots is ready to enjoy the same care and attention. At just 18 months old, Boots is young to have already experienced motherhood, but this is not uncommon among stray cats. Female cats can become

pregnant as early as four months old, and shortly after, they find themselves nursing a litter while still kittens themselves. It does seem unfair that a cat can lose her kittenhood and suddenly be responsible for the safety and feeding of hungry little kittens who are solely dependent on her. Boots likes people, and once she is familiar with someone she enjoys being picked up and cuddled. Boots can sometimes get jealous of the other cats’ attention. She might prefer being an only kitty, but currently is doing just fine in a free-roaming room with 14 other kitties. There seem to be no major issues, as Boots tends to mind her own business while waiting for a human to give her attention. STATEWIDE More and more people these days are setting up their own home gym as a way to stay in shape and maybe even stay within their budget. In some cases, however, the equipment can be costly. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has some tips on what to know when considering gym equipment and staying within budget. Choosing and Purchasing Home Gym Equipment Start with personal fitness needs and goals. Any equipment

purchased should match up with the homeowner’s personal objectives and interests; otherwise, they may not use the equipment after the initial excitement wears off. If there are existing health conditions, such as heart disease, arthritis, or a back injury, homeowners are advised to check with their doctors about what kind of exercises and equipment are safe to use. Research appropriate exercises and strength resistance training methods as well to avoid further injury. Set a budget. With such a wide variety of home gym

equipment on the market, it is relatively easy to set up an effective home gym on just about any budget. Plan the cost to determine how much can be spent on equipment, and compare that to the potential money saved if a gym membership were to be canceled. Measure the space. Another consideration that will affect the decision on wether or not to purchase a home gym is how much space can be dedicated to it. Measure the workout space carefully to see if specific pieces of equipment will fit. More importantly, measure all entryways the equipment must

fit through as well! Read consumer reviews. Once the homeowner has found a piece of equipment that matches their fitness objectives, is within their budget, and physically fits in their designated space, it is time to start reading reviews. Read multiple reviews from several retailers and pay attention to any comments about the quality of the equipment and the experience with the retailer. Beware of “get fit quick” solutions. Avoid the temptation to buy equipment that promises miraculous results. Maintaining physical health is a long-term endeavor that will require effort. If

a seller says their equipment will get someone in shape with little to no effort, a healthy dose of skepticism is advised. If possible, test the equipment before buying. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends wearing exercise clothes and athletic shoes to try out exercise equipment before buying. Many brickand-mortar retailers have the equipment already on display display to try before buying. Compare prices. Weekly Recipe: Roasted Parsnips with Rosemary Garlic Butter Nothing brings out the natural sweetness and earthiness of parsnips like roasting. Parsnips go especially well with pork, chicken, and other fruits and vegetables such as apples, carrots, pears, and spinach. Serves 4.

Ingredients 2-1/2 lbs. fresh parsnips, scrubbed and cut in half lengthwise

5 Tbsp. butter

2 cloves of fresh, peeled garlic 2 tsp. fresh minced rosemary Salt and pepper to taste

Chopped fresh parsley for garnish Crushed red pepper ﬂakes (optional)

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 450˚F. Spread the parsnips on a rimmed baking sheet.

2. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in the garlic and cook for 20 seconds. Remove from the heat and stir in the rosemary.
