hen you step into Warradale Men’s Shed, Warragamba, you know that you have walked into any man’s dream world – there are tools, old cars, projects to work on and a bunch of blokes sitting around having a laugh. Made up entirely of retired men from Penrith, the Blue Mountains and surrounds, the local Men’s Shed is a place where these men can go to get out of the home, talk to each other and work on projects that they may not have had the time to start before retirement. They do gardening, wood work, metal work, mechanical repairs and more whilst teaching each other skills that each man brings to the group. “It’s a couple of days a week where you can come down, get out of the house and do something with a bunch of retired men like you,” said Secretary, Tony O’Toole. “We can work on anything that we like, it might be a project from home or something you want to learn more about. You also have a chance to get out of the house and talk to men – it’s a good thing to be able to talk.” The men may joke around and have a whole lot of fun but they are prepared to sit down and have a serious chat when another bloke is in need. “99 per cent of us are carrying some kind of baggage as far as health problems; prostate problems, heart problems.
