MAYOR’S NEWS MARK DAVIES

Focus on us Our community consistently tells us that what is important to them is; that our City’s growth is to be properly managed and planned (with local jobs, good transport options and quality local training), and for Council to stand up for you and advocate to the Federal and State Governments for greater focus on our growing region’s needs. So we have some good news this week. The Federal and State Governments are talking about establishing a Regional Development Australia committee (RDA) for Greater Western Sydney. There are more than 50 RDA’s around Australia but there is currently only one RDA for all of Sydney. Th is coordinated approach, which includes input from local leaders, will help our region secure the jobs, services, transport links and other infrastructure we need. It will also improve our access to the investment we need to fast-track some important projects. A regional RDA is just the sort of focus our Council has long called for. Th is is an important step in unlocking the economic potential of our City.

Kids must ‘party right’ Internet resource teaches youth about alcohol issues

ember for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, visited Jamison High School last week to launch an important new online resource about alcohol consumption. Mr Ayres met with the Jamison High Principal, Greg Lill and Vice Captains Tamati Wharerau and Rebecca Peace to discuss the launch of ‘Out Tonight? Party Right’, an online resource developed by the NSW Government to help students improve their awareness about alcohol, the law and potential risks and dangers associated with drinking. “Th is new Internet resource ‘Out Tonight? Party Right’, aims to minimise alcohol-related harm among young people in our local schools, community and across the state by educating them about the impacts that drinking can have on themselves, their friends and the community,” Mr Ayres said. ‘Out Tonight? Party Right’ was developed by the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing in conjunction with the Department of Education and Communities to align with the NSW school curriculum. Mr Ayres said ‘Out Tonight? Party Right’ gives high school students the information and facts they need to have fun safely and responsibly while staying on the right side of the law. “High school is a time when young people celebrate important milestones in their lives; formals, graduations and birthday celebrations, when personal decisions are made about the use of alcohol,” he said.

Stuart Ayres meets with Greg Lill and school students Tamati Wharerau and Rebecca Peace.

Minister for Hospitality, George Souris, launched the resource on February 14 and said the Government is committed to implementing measures to help reduce risk drinking and alcoholrelated assaults. “Our whole-of-Government approach includes strong regulation of licenced venues, including targeting irresponsible venue operators through our Thr ee Strikes disciplinary scheme,” Mr Souris said. “Unfortunately for some young people,

their introduction to alcohol comes at a time in their life when they are not fully informed about its potential dangers for both short and long term harm – to their health, to their developing brains, to their relationships, to their performance at school, and to their future life potential.” Mr Souris said helping educate young people about responsible and safe attitudes towards alcohol is a critical part of protecting the next generation from alcohol-related harm. The resource is available at www.partyright.nsw.edu.au.
