Dear Weekender

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Kingswood could receive a major facelift if a development for commercial and residential space is given the green tick. Residents can now have their say on a proposal to build three levels of basement parking, a level of retail space and 97 residential apartments. The site in question is 240 and 250 Great Western Highway, Kingswood and is currently a pool showroom. The overall works would cost between $19 million and $23 million. Penrith Councillors have expressed their dissatisfaction with the organisation of the 2013 Local Government NSW Annual Conference, which will be held in Sydney from October 1 to 3. The Conference is supposed to be a forum for Councils to discuss and formulate policies that can be put forward to both the State and Federal Governments. Several councillors on Monday evening said that the conference was “more of a lecture than a forum” with the format not supporting any real discussion. Penrith Council will be looking to discuss local government reforms put forward by the State Government, planning, fina ncial sustainability of councils and public health and safety. There will soon be more residential aged care homes in Penrith thanks to an approved expansion of Governor Phillip Manor retirement village. In works totalling up to $25 million, new self contained units will be built, along with renovations to the existing facilities located at 64 Glebe Street, Penrith.

Bradbury jumps ship

I am glad I’m not relying on David Bradbury as my carer. True to form from his Councillor days, David Bradbury has not changed. When the going gets tough, Mr Bradbury is nowhere to be seen. Th is time he has jumped from the Gillard ship to the Rudd ship, to save his own political backside. As usual Mr Bradbury, thanks for nothing. Where’s the money coming from?

Comrade Rudd just returned from a few hours visit to Indonesia. The boat people were only mentioned briefly. A more in depth discussion is to take place in the future. But we are tired of waiting for some positive action in this regard. It has been reported that the boat people are paying thousands of dollars per head for a berth on one of the rickety boats. Where is the money coming from when the “refugees” are supposed to be from impoverished nations? Someone must be footing the bill for these unfortunates. There have been rumours that Saudi Arabia and/or Iran is putting up the money for the “refugees”. Th is is a matter that should have high priority for investigation. The Islamists themselves have said that they won’t rest until the flag of Islam fl ies over Canberra’s Parliament. It is time that we looked upon the boat people as a continuing wave of Islamists to restructure Australia in the fashion successive waves of these “missionaries” would turn us into. How much longer do we have to put up with leaders who care little for Australia? Jay Nauss, via email . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Taking responsibility

Some people cannot take responsibility for their own actions (Ray made me do it, Western Weekender July 5). If Ray Hadley told you to jump off the Harbour Bridge would you do it? Patrick Hardy, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Traffic pain continues

The westbound off ramp to Russell Street needs to be extended before any other changes are made (M4 relief as upgrade promised, Western Weekender July 5). As does the off ramp to The Northern Road. A specific left turn lane should be put in place for drivers wishing to turn onto Leonay Parade, which could be a lot longer than just 90 metres. I’ve seen multiple locations where queue detectors are in place but have never seen the traffic lights which are attached actually used. And why do the genius road designers continue to force traffic to cross through traffic lanes and line up at traffic lights instead of designing loop roads/on ramps/off ramps which allow traffic to merge into the traffic flow? How simple some of these improvements could be. Jason Donnelly, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Praise for local content

It has been a long time since I thought to make a comment about your paper. We receive all the local papers but I found yours well presented, very informative and truly local. Thanks and keep up the good work. Asuncion Silva, via email . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The Western Weekender

Penrith is certainly expanding, with a new land release development on the horizon. Developers are looking to turn the grazing land at 19-105 Capitol Hill Drive, Mt Vernon into new rural residential lots – 35 in total. Residents can have their say on the development by contacting Council.

Have your say:
