Win for seniors: Photo identification card costs dropped by State Government

Seniors and aged carers may have access to free identification cards following State Government changes.

he cost of living is increasing and our local seniors are feeling the full force, but a new State Government initiative hopes to make life a little easier for seniors. It was announced last week by Minister for Ageing and Disability Services, Andrew Constance, and Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay, that photo identification cards are now free for NSW seniors. “Th is concession means 200,000 NSW residents on a Centrelink carers allowance or those with a NSW Seniors Card are now eligible to receive a NSW Photo Card free of charge,” Mr Gay said. The free card is not only available to seniors in NSW but aged carers may also be eligible. “In recognition of the important role carers play in our community, the NSW Government has also decided free NSW Photo Cards should be made available to carers,” Mr Constance said. “I hope this saving will ease the cost of living burden on the State’s seniors and carers – they sure deserve it.” The free Photo Card, which previously cost $48 for five years, can be applied for at any Roads and Maritime Services registry. Chief Executive Officer of Council on the Ageing NSW Ian Day said that the announcement will help seniors and carers to be engaged in their local communities. “Any measure that helps older people continue to play an active role in their communities is to be applauded,” he said. The free card is only available to those who do not have a NSW drivers licence.
