Bow Brickhill Stables is located in Holland Township, NJ approximately 6 miles west of Pittstown, NJ, 1 1/4 hours from New York City, and 1 hour from Philadelphia. We are situated on 71 beautiful acres with miles of finely manicured bridle ways that meander around our pastures and along our miles of fence lines. Our outdoor arena is 200’ x 300’ and is outfitted with a dressage arena and a jump course. Our outdoor has bank jumps that transition one into our cross country course. Our cross country course includes stadium jumps, banks, coops, dog houses, brush boxes, a ditch, liver pools and benches. We have an oversized indoor arena that is 220’ long with dust controlled footing and also outfitted with jumps. We feel that turnout is an important element in keeping horses content and sound. We have 17 turnouts for both individual and group turnout. Horses are rotated throughout the day and receive a minimum of 5 hours of turnout per day. We have automatic solar waterers in most of our turnouts to ensure that horses have access to water year round. Our stalls are all 12’ x 12’ and have automatic waterers. We use triple screened bedding that is kiln dried and therefore, has a lower dust content and higher absorption rate. We feed high quality, locally grown hay and Nutrena, Triple Crown and Agway feeds. The care of your horse comes first at Bow Brickhill Stables.

The delivery has gone well, and the mare is comfortable. Before you breathe a sigh of relief, pay close attention to the foal. “Problems can arise anytime during the first months of life but problems during the neonatal period, first month of life, often develop rapidly and can become critical in an amazingly short period of time,” says Jonathan E. Palmer, VMD. “The first 48 hours are particularly critical. Anything abnormal is a warning and cause for concern.” Dr. Palmer is director of perinatal/neonatal programs and chief of the neonatal intensive care service. A Vet On-Hand “Alert your vet to the foal’s birth so he or she can be on standby should a problem arise. Even if everything looks great, schedule a healthy foal check,” advises Dr. Palmer. Some owners request the vet be present for the birth as when things go wrong at birth there is little time to intervene. The vet will do a complete exam and check for transfer of colostral antibodies. “I like to do this within 8-12 hours,” says Dr. Palmer, “That way if the antibodies are low, you can always feed the foal more colostrum during that critical first 18 hours.” Even if the vet examines the foal at birth, a second exam is often performed later within 24 hours. The vet will examine the foal carefully for problems that might not be readily evident to the untrained eye, such as fractured ribs or heart or lung problems.

What’s Normal? In order to recognize abnormalities, it’s important to know what is reasonable to expect from a normal foal. Close observation of behavior is key. A normal foal starts breathing within one minute of birth, and, within minutes of being born, will be “sitting up” on its sternum and looking around. A healthy foal will try to stand, on wobbly legs, in the first half hour after birth. Most are standing within an hour and nursing well within 90 minutes. Some foals get up and start nursing more slowly than others especially if the mare has stayed down for a long period after foaling. “I prefer not to intervene initially and simply observe, so I can be sure that the foal is acting normally,” says Dr. Palmer. “However, if he is not up within an

Elite Equestrian

Page 13

hour a helping hand may be in order and if he is not up and nursing by three hours, even with help, medical intervention is necessary.”

Eating Right The first few feedings are extremely important to the future health of the foal. This is when the foal receives colostrum from the mare. Produced before the actual milk, it is almost as thick as heavy cream, and offwhite to yellow in hue. Colostrum transfers immune factors and growth stimulants essential for protection of the foal from infection, but only during the first 18 hours of life. It also helps the foal pass his meconium, the first manure, which is black to dark greenish. Should the mare lose her colostrum because she begins to drip milk during the last few days of her pregnancy (early lactation), your vet or a nearby breeding farm may have some available; there are also commercial sources. If the mare is unable to nurse the foal for any reason, you’ll need to provide not only colostrum but milk as well. Arrange for a nurse mare (a foster mother), or sustain the foal with commercial milk replacers.

A steady drip from the foal’s nose is typical; this normal drainage of fluid from the lungs can last an hour or more.

The best way to know if the foal is nursing well is to check the mare’s udder. During the first 24 hours there is often udder swelling,

making it difficult to determine just how much milk is left in the udder. After the first 24 hours the mare’s udder will be empty after the foal has nursed. A full udder means problems with the foal. Milk on the foal’s head can also indicate that the foal is not nursing normally and should prompt examination by your vet. Nursing provides more than sustenance for the newborn foal. In addition to milk, time in the pasture with mother offers valuable lessons about appropriate behavior. “If you are raising an orphan foal on milk replacer,” advises Dr. Palmer, “find the foal a pasturemate for socialization.” Establishing a Routine A healthy foal will pass meconium within the first three to four hours of life. It can easily be missed and difficult to find in the stall. The foal should be watched for unproductive straining or rolling onto his back with his legs on either side of his head indicating colic, which should prompt a call to your veterinarian. Some other signs to watch for are diarrhea, abdominal distention (bloating),

and swelling in the scrotal area or under the skin of the abdomen. The first urination usually occurs at about 12 hours of age. Once they begin to urinate, newborn foals urinate nearly every time they get up after a nap. A foal will rapidly adopt a routine of sleeping, nursing several times an hour and playing. He may explore the stall and play before or after nursing but will lie down and sleep between nursing sessions. Young foals sleep often but a foal that sleeps all the time and does not get up to nurse at least hourly may be in trouble. On the other hand, the foal that never lies down and is going all the time is also in trouble. Foals can change rapidly during the first few days of life so even if the vet check shows a healthy foal you still need to watch carefully for signs of problems.

Other Considerations If the foal is in serious danger, an equine clinic can provide the supportive care necessary, and run a number of laboratory tests in-house. In special cases, you and your vet may agree that a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), such as the Graham French Neonatal Section in the Connelly Intensive Care Unit at Penn Vet’s New Bolton Center will be a better choice. A NICU can provide the most thorough care, with neonatal and obstetrical specialists, intensive monitoring, nursing capabilities and an onsite lab that can run tests 24 hours a day, seven days a week when needed. They also have a fully staffed surgery team in the event the foal should need it. Whenever there is any indication that a young foal may be having a problem it is better to ask for help right away rather than waiting to see what will happen.

An at-risk foal is one who…

• is not standing within an hour of delivery; • is not nursing within three hours of delivery; • seems weak, or has a temperature that is below 99◦ or over 102◦ before activity; • wanders around searching everything but the mare for the udder; • finds the udder but doesn’t stay on the teat; • appears not to be swallowing; • vocalizes abnormally (barks or squeals); • has milk run out his nose after nursing; • has a very soft haircoat, floppy ears and is unusually small (signs of prematurity); • is straining to defecate or fails to pass meco nium within two hours, or becomes colicky; • is not passing urine within 24 hours.

nteragro Lusitanos

the largest breeder and exporter of Lusitano horses in the world, is inviting fans to mark their calendars for June 23rd, 2012, the date of the 2012 Lusitano Collection® International Horse Auction. The esteemed auction, which features a world-class selection of Lusitano horses, has been held in the United States for the past four years. The success of the auction in the United States and the blossoming popularity of the Interagro Lusitano prompted the organizers to host the prestigious auction at Interagro Lusitanos outside of Sao Paulo. Interagro’s unique equestrian culture and dedication to preserving the pure Lusitano lineages offers visitors an unparalleled equestrian experience. The 1200-acre ranch is set among lush tropical landscape and Interagro’s selection of Lusitanos at auction have been bred and selected for their movement, trainability, and talent for competitive endeavors. The 2012 Lusitano Collection® International Horse Auction will allow prospective buyers Page 18

to immerse themselves in everything Lusitano while enjoying an insider’s glimpse of the Interagro operation and selecting their ideal horse. “Our farm has a unique history and as a private business, is not open to the public. We have loved hosting the auctions in Wellington, Florida over the past few years, but so many people have shown an interest in visiting Interagro that we decided bring the auction back to our farm in 2012. The 2004 and 2005 Collections were held in Brazil, and all of the horses are bred and trained here, so the 2012 auction will be a new angle for those who have been with us in the United States,” said Cecilia Gonzaga, the Managing Director of Interagro Lusitanos in Brazil. “The truly unique aspect of holding an auction on the breeding farm is that every buyer will have the chance to see their prospects’ sire, dam, relatives, and to meet the people that have handled and trained that horse since it was foaled. This ‘living pedigree’ combined with Interagro’s unequaled selection of Lusitanos offers visitors a completely unique experience and buying opportunity.” Named the “Best Breeder of Year” in 2009, 2010, and 2011, Interagro Lusitanos was founded in 1975 with the goal of preserving the Lusitano breed. The Lusitano Collection® International Horse Auction is an annual

Elite Equestrian

event which presents finely bred Lusitanos chosen for their movement, trainability, and talent for competitive endeavors. The auction features young horses under saddle and Interagro offers Lusitanos for sale ranging from yearlings to more finished horses with show experience. “Interagro’s mission has always been to develop a bloodline of Lusitanos that are competitive in contemporary equestrian pursuits, including FEI level dressage. As a competition and performance horse, the Lusitano is hard to beat,” Gonzaga said. The Lusitano Collection® International Horse Auction is known for being an actionpacked evening, featuring everything from lively Samba dancers to exhibition rides to a showcase of demonstrations by each of the sale horses taking part in the auction. “The auction is one of the most thrilling evenings of the year and draws Lusitano fans from all over the world,” Gonzaga said. “The evening is filled with exciting activities and once the bidding starts, anything can happen.” The Lusitano breed is renown for their generous temperament and ease under saddle, making it an attractive prospect for amateur and professional riders alike. The 2012 Collection will feature Lusitanos suitable for riders at all levels. “Whether the buyer is

looking for an amateur’s mount or a professional prospect, they will find an Interagro Lusitano that is a perfect match. All of the Interagro horses presented at auction are chosen for their athleticism and trainability, traits that have made them a popular pleasure and show mount across the world,” Gonzaga said. “Save the date and join us in Brazil. It will be the trip of a lifetime.” The Lusitano Collection International Horse Auction is an event not to be missed, so mark your calendars now for the Brazilian equestrian event of the season, June 23, 2012. FOALING: ARE YOU PREPARED?

You have made the decision to breed your favorite mare and have done the research to find a good stallion match. You have done the appropriate pre-breeding tests/exams, decided on how the breeding will take place (e.g. artificial insemination, live cover, embryo transfer etc.) and have your veterinarian on board with your decision.

The breeding went flawlessly and your mare is now pregnant. The wait time is approximately now 320 to 365 days.

ARE YOU PREPARED? BROODMARE CARE Keeping good records is essential. Minimally, these records should include breeding dates, illnesses, pregnancy exams, medical treatments and vaccination dates/types. If the mare has foaled before, record comparison to the prior foaling could help predict potential problems and gestation length. Vaccinations are essential during the gestation period since the foal is nearly defenseless when born. The equine placenta does not allow antibody transfer to the foal while in utero; however, once born, the antibodies are transferred from mare to foal via the colostrum or first milk. For this reason, during the pregnancy, your veterinarian will set up a mare vaccination schedule to be given to assure the colostrum is antibody rich.

and protein requirements must be significantly increased from the mare’s normal intake; therefore a slow change to a commercial diet intended for broodmares is necessary. Your veterinarian can assist you in which diets to consider. Always use a commercial feed intended for this purpose. Do not experiment with your own mixes and additives unless you have considerable equine nutrition research knowledge. PRE-FOALING As the time approaches, setup for the event should occur. This should include some supply assemblage. See Table 1.

Arrange to have a minimal 14 x 14 foot stall available for foaling. The mare should be acclimated to the new facility prior to foaling. The stall should be disinfected prior to occupancy and kept well cleaned and Feeding must also be upgraded, particularly bedded prior to and after foaling. as the last trimester approaches. Energy

Your veterinarian may also recommend a foal alert apparatus to be placed in the mare. Most mares like to foal when it is late night, quiet and they are undisturbed. These alerts as well as closed circuit television monitors can be very useful in determining the precise timing of the event. Most mares foal without incident (approximately 90% of the time); however, always keep your veterinarian in the loop as to what is going on. Physical changes in the mare will begin to progress including a dropped abdomen, swelling and relaxing of the volvular area, sinking on either side of the tailhead area, and utter enlargement. Some milky secretions may also be observed. If the mare bags up much before 320 days or if her abdomen drops to an extreme, call the veterinarian immediately. As the utters enlarge (during the last month), some secretions may be observed. They will change from a watery, clear or straw colored fluid to a thick white milky fluid. As she approaches birth, colostrum will be produced which is thick, yellow and sticky (hence the term waxing). Once she has waxed, birth is generally near, especially in maiden mares. If multiple births have been given, dripping of the milk can occur earlier. Behavioral changes also occur. They can include pawing, getting up and down frequently, yawning, curling the upper lip,

stretching, sweating, looking at their flanks, frequent urination, and general restlessness. STAGES OF LABOR There are 3 stages of labor. Stage 1 is when the uterus begins contractions and the mare appears restless and frequently gets up and down. Call the veterinarian to alert them. This stage can last anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours. The mare’s tail should be wrapped by now and genitalia washed. As the labor process continues, her “water” will break releasing amber colored allantoic fluid. Give the mare some quiet time. If the family is standing around as a cheering section, she will most likely delay the birth until left alone. This is where remote camera monitoring comes into play. Stage 2. Within minutes of the water breaking, the mare will begin pushing. The foal should appear within 30 – 40 minutes or it is in danger of suffocating. The amniotic sac will appear first from the vulva followed by the front feet, head and rear legs. During delivery, the mare is generally lying down on her side. The amnion should rupture when the shoulders present. If not, opening the sac gently should be a priority to assure the membranes are not around the foal’s nose and muzzle area. Within minutes, the foal should be breathing comfortable and struggling to get upright. When the mare stands, the umbilical cord should break.

Do you have a drinking problem? From weather, to traveling, to illness, there are many reasons horses will stop drinking enough, and put their health at risk. But there is only one proven solution: Horse Quencher. Visit us at www.horsequencher.com or call 1-888-QUENCHS (783-6247).

Page 22

In the event that the water never breaks and a red velvety membrane protrudes, a ”red bag” emergency is present. Due to the premature separation of the placenta, the foal is denied oxygen and the sac must be cut open and foal delivered ASAP. Stage 3. This is where the mare expels the placenta within 30 minutes to 3 hours and the uterus begins to return to normalcy. Until this happens, it is wise to tie the placenta up to itself so that it does not drag on the floor

FINAL THOUGHTS If you are not experienced at foaling, it is strongly recommended to have the veterinarian there throughout the process. Not only can they assist if there is some delivery difficulty; but also, they can be there for an important evaluation.

and entangle around her legs. Never “pull” on it. Once passed, remove it from the stall and your veterinarian can examine it for completeness and health.

The placenta should be checked within the 1st 24 hours, an IgG pulled at 12-14 hours, enemas for Meconium (first foal manure) if not passed in the 1st 4 hours, additional If there are any signs of delayed labor, colic, colostrum needs, urination ability of the foal, false labor, pre foaling vulvar discharge, foal infection potential control, mare trauma mis-presentation, retained placenta, failure and a host of other potential hazards. The to stand up and nurse, excessive bleeding early days of a foal’s existence are a critical from the umbilical cord, the vet should inter- time. Use your veterinarian’s experience and vene immediately. training to assure the best possible outcome. Clean the umbilical stump with the betadine or chlorhexidine solution and enjoy the first few minutes of a new life as it struggles to get up and find the milk. This should occur within 2 hours.

“The appendages exercise really brought home, in a visceral way, how the typical corporate team structure of clear-cut cross-functional roles can constrict creativity on the team and lead to frustration and burn out. In the de-brief after the demo, I learned that at various times my “appendages” had either mentally checked out, or broke the rules, in order to alleviate their frustration at not being able to say or do what they felt would bring the team success. These insights are directly transferrable to the workplace, in thinking about how to help teams become higher functioning,” ~ Lynn Dolan of LDD Consulting after experiencing EAL for the first time in May 2011

creative thinking and problem solving skills to better implement any organization’s improved communication skills and success towards larger goals. When a new corporate client approaches SROH to begin the process of Equine Assisted Learning (EAL), the first phase is to hold an initial consultation/screening interview where facilitators can learn the unique needs, challenges and goals of that particular company or division. Next, they create a customized set of activities with the horses that will target the areas marked for improvement or clarity. On the scheduled day(s) of EAL, the horses and facilitators work together with participants to discover any patterns or impediments to progress. The horses’ physicality and interaction (or avoidance) to the group members highlight “clues” based upon how congruent and safe they feel in their surroundings. There are also ample round table discussion breaks that provide reflection and processing of what took place with the horses - - What worked? What didn’t? After the EAL day on site, SROH offers a 30day follow-up period upon which an assessment report is given to the client complete with pictures and video clips. David P. Marra, Consultant to SROH for Corporate Education and Equine Assisted Learning Programs adds that, “The pressures of competition for market share and achievement of industry leadership cuts across all industries. As we all have seen, even the biggest and best companies are not immune to extinction if there isn’t a continual progression toward greatness. Cooperation and teamwork, which at one time were considered soft skills in the corporate world, are now in part of the mainstream currency by which success is achieved. The underpinning of cooperation and teamwork is the growth of trust among work colleagues. Presidential Horses Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori For those of us who love horses and history, a review of some equines that spent time in and around the White House over the last century or is in order. While most of our Presidents had pets- ranging from dogs to birds- a select few made their pets a major part of their administration. President Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace maintained something likened to a zoo at the White House while Coolidge was in office from 1923 to 1929. His white collie was best known, but the Coolidges also had terriers, airdales, chow chows, bulldogs, and a Shetland sheepdog. In addition to the many dogs, canaries, geese, and mockingbirds were the beloved pets of Mrs. Coolidge. However, the vast land available to the President sparked his desire to own other animals such as cats, horses, and donkeys. The most exotic Coolidge pets were gifts from dignitaries including a wallaby, a pigmy hippo, a bear, and lion cubs.

Woodrow Wilson (1913-1921) kept track of his favorite pet named Old Ike, who was a tobacco-chewing ram (yes, a ram!) along with some sheep that grazed the White House lawn. William Taft (1909-1913) was responsible for bringing the last cow to the White House. He put an end to the keeping of a most common 19th Century Presidential pet. No matter the President, in terms of numbers of pets, Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) trumped all of his colleagues in the White House. A great gamesman, hunter, and

EQUINE ART, HOME FASHION & REAL ESTATE nature enthusiast, Roosevelt brought many, many animals with him and his large family to the White House. Roosevelt’s favorite pet was a horse named Bleistein, however, there were other horses that the President rode with regularity including Renown, Roswell, Rusty, Jocko, Root, Grey, Dawn, Wyoming, and Yangenkah. In addition to the Roosevelt family horses, there were guinea pigs, cats, badgers, and terriers in the Roosevelt White House as well as Alice Roosevelt’s pet snake. The pet with the most interesting name of them all was, in my opinion, Eli Yale, Quentin Roosevelt’s macaw. Little Quentin Roosevelt was nearly 4 years old when his family moved into the White House. He and his siblings had a pony named Algonquin, who became almost as famous as his young master for all the mischief they caused.

One day, Algonquin was brought into the White House and upstairs in an elevator by Quentin in an effort to cheer up his sick brother, Archie. The White House was never the same. The menagerie of pets living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during much of the first decade of the 20th Century included owls, lizards, roosters, raccoons, hyenas, lions, and bears. In looks and vigor, the horse Algonquin owned by the Roosevelts only rivaled Caroline Kennedy’s pony named Macaroni. The Kennedy children received pets as gifts on many occasions however the horse named Macaroni was a present from Vice President, Lyndon Johnson. Macaroni roamed the White House grounds and even received fan letters from the public. I guess being the President’s daughter has its Continued...

WHEN AND WHERE SHOULD I RETIRE MY HORSE? Part 2

Part 1 of this series discussed the potentials of keeping your senior companion at home. In many cases, this is not feasible and other alternatives must be examined. Before considering a facility, make up an Advance Directive that outlines what kind of care/procedures you want done if an emergency occurs. You and the facility should be on the same wavelength in order for your wishes to be carried out properly. To make clear and non-emotional decisions, plan prior to an emergency. If you have decided to retire your horse at a retirement facility, there are many considerations to be made. MOST OF ALL VISIT THE FACILITY AND ASK QUESTIONS. • Is the facility reputable? Is their care philosophy similar to your own? Ask other retiree owners at the facility (or get references). Check out the pastures and barns/sheds. Are there broken fences? Is there garbage, loose wires, large holes, unsecured items, low hanging tree limbs, down trees or limbs in the pasture, a source of clean water that will not freeze, and is the pasture easily accessible for veterinarians, farriers and equipment as needed? (See common pasture hazards figures 1-4) Remember, as horses get older, the sight, balance, hearing, and motor abilities lessen thus making safe and accessible pasture areas mandatory.

• How old are the horses there and what is the turn over rate? If you find that horses are coming and going, you should inquire as to why. Most good retirement facilities have the horses there until their passing which hopefully is at a good old age. • Are the horses turned out in pasture with sheds all the time or do they have stalls included for rough weather? A horse that is turned out 24/7 in beautiful green pastures may not be checked on as often and as thoroughly as one being brought in and out of a stall daily. Find out who feeds and checks for problems. Does the facility have

EQUINE HEALTH qualified personnel? What is the staff turnover rate? Additionally, if your horse requires medications (long term or short term), are the caregivers capable of administering it in a timely and appropriate manner? Even more importantly, if turned out 24/7, is it your horse that is getting his/her medications or is another pasture mate being opportunistic and chowing down on your horse’s medications? • What is the general atmosphere? Is it serene, cozy and appears to be generally well run? Your first impression will tell a lot of the story. What does your “gut” tell you? Bustling confusion and non-preparedness should not be your first impression in a retirement facility.

Figure 1

• Are the caregivers on site? If they are away or at other jobs, then who is monitoring the horses? Situations happen quickly and someone needs to be able to act quickly and effectively. Are there veterinarians close at hand? Equine veterinarians are not as plentiful as small animal practitioners. Question how long will it take a vet to get

there in an emergency as well as 24/7 “on call” ability. • When and if your horse needs special feeds or hay, is the facility able to easily adjust to the new needs? A horse that has lost most if not all of the chewing capability of the teeth may need special mashes and/or special grass-like hays. This also means that the horse will eat slower. Will the other horses in the field aggressively pursue the special feeds and chase your horse away? • Check out the actual facilities. Is the barn clean, airy, well maintained, easily assessable from pastures and internally well lit? Is there a clean feed room with adequate storage and notations as to what each horse gets as to quantity and type of feed? Is there adequate hay stored and what is the quality of it? Is there an area in which a medical condition could be treated easily? Are fans available for hot humid days?

Figure 3

• What are the visitation practices? You should be able to visit your horse as often as you wish. In fact, many facilities encourage Figure 4 visitations as it promotes your horse’s well being. Is there a place on site where you could spend the night if a simple day trip is not feasible? Are you updated routinely as to your companion’s condition (e.g. pictures or emails)? • Finally, check the costs and fees and what is actually included in the basic plan? For example, find out the costs for fly treatments, worming, routine dental work, farrier trims, routine vaccinations, blanketing (if necessary) and supplements. EQUINE HEALTH Although the benefits of immunotherapy are well documented in humans and animals (greater than 70% of patients show marked improvement), the process is not a “quick fix”. Some patients show improvement in a matter of weeks, but most take much longer. Immunotherapy is often administered for as long as one year before the full benefits can be observed or the lack of a response is noted. Horse owners have two options to determine exactly what their horse is allergic to: intradermal skin testing or blood testing. Both of these methods have been shown to be reliable in identifying those allergens that are involved in allergic disease. Intradermal skin tests performed on horses can be difficult to interpret due to the pigmentation and sensitive nature of equine skin. Skin testing typically involves sedating the patient, clipping a large section of skin to prepare a test area and multiple injections. Each positive test results in a local skin reaction similar to a bee sting. Skin testing also requires that the patient be withdrawn from all antihistamine and steroid medications for several weeks prior to the day of the test.

Stop just treating allergy symptoms. Diagnose allergies and control the disease with immunotherapy.

Additionally, specialists who perform equine skin testing typically require a referral and are usually located at universities or private referral centers in larger metropolitan areas. Blood testing has proven to be a convenient alternative to intradermal skin testing. Blood tests require only a simple blood sample that may be taken by any practitioner without the inconvenience of a drug withdrawal period. This testing method is much less traumatic for the patient. Equine allergy panels at Pet Allergy Laboratory include more than 80 individually tested grasses, weeds, trees, molds, foods, culicoides and other insects. Contact your veterinarian about allergy testing today. Following a complete history, assessment of the horse’s environment and clinical examination, blood testing is a logical next step in providing an effective and safe treatment plan for equine allergies.

The course designer for this year’s show is Matthew Jenkins. A select group of vendors will have booths featuring everything from equestrian necessities to fine arts for our spectators. One of the biggest draws for the many people who patronize this annual horse show is Kimberton Hunt’s legendary food tent. Delicious, reasonably priced, homemade food will be served by club members throughout the day. As always, a professional photographer will be on the grounds to take photos of horses and riders, and a farrier will be available for that last-minute shoe adjustment. The Stoneybrook Steeplechase ushers in the North Carolina springtime for the 61st year

Race day slated for Easter weekend, April 7, 2012 Think Stoneybrook and what surfaces are images of tailgating at its finest, elaborate hats and classy bow ties, Bloody Mary’s and the inevitable mint julep. There is the 5K Run for the Ribbons footrace finishing just hours before the Thoroughbreds thunder across the same finish line and hundreds of kids swarming the stick horse races, bounce houses and climbing walls. As the rite of spring in the Sandhills, this year’s Stoneybrook Steeplechase will couple horse-racing and family fun in the countryside, with a chance to show off Easter hats and the best Easter egg basket. The 61st running of the Stoneybrook Steeplechase will take place on April 7, 2012, the Saturday of Easter weekend. Tickets are on sale now through the Carolina Horse Park office at 910.875.2074 or online at www. carolinahorsepark.com/stoneybrook. A 20% military discount is available for any level of admission. As a venerable showcase for not only superior horse racing talent, but also a social gathering for “people watching” at its best, this race is the cornerstone event at the Carolina Horse Park and attracts the best Page 56

horses and jockeys from around the nation. Founded more than five decades ago, Stoneybrook moved to the Carolina Horse Park in 2001 and has seen phenomenal growth as competitors vie for top honors and tens of thousands in purse money. Stoneybrook is a tradition hailed by those who ride as well as those who don’t. As the largest sporting event in Hoke County, Stoneybrook’s crowd topped 8,500 people last year and race coordinators are expecting huge crowds again. “Most people come to see the horses, but they also come to make a day of it,” said Jane Murray, the executive director for the Park. “It’s an all-day family affair, and a lot of people come just to have a day in the country.”
