Dear Friends, The past year has been one of growth, change and engagement on all fronts for the Mississippi Heritage Trust. Some of my favorite moments: • Making lots of new friends during the MS MOD tour of Mississippi’s modernist masterpieces in the Eastover neighborhood of Jackson; • Securing grant funds from our partners at the National Park Service, National Trust for Historic Preservation, the 1772 Foundation, State of Mississippi, Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, Mississippi Arts Commission and the Mississippi Humanities Council for educational outreach programs; • Exploring lovely historic downtown Hattiesburg as part of the

Background

Over the last twenty-three years, the Mississippi Heritage Trust has: • Partnered with local advocates to save dozens of historic places in Mississippi. • Inaugurated the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in 1999, which has raised awareness of the plight of historic treasures big and small and resulted in amazing preservation victories. The 10th listing of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places was announced on October 22, 2015. • Along with preservation partners, advocated for the passage of a State Historic Tax Credit for the rehabilitation of historic properties, which passed in 2006 and was reauthorized in 2011 and 2014. • Showcased some of Mississippi’s many preservation-minded places to historic preservation conference participants, including Natchez, Church Hill, Columbus, West Point, Biloxi, Ocean Springs, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, Pascagoula, Carrollton, Greenwood, Mound Bayou, Clarksdale, Meridian, Cleveland, Hattiesburg, Tupelo and Jackson. • Recognized over 200 preservation success stories of Mississippians who have done their part to protect the irreplaceable with the Mississippi Heritage Awards. • Worked with local, state and national partners to help the Gulf Coast recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina through efforts such as the Pilot Stabilization Program and the Good Neighbor House Painting Program.

Back in 1992, when a group of dedicated preservationists got together to form the Mississippi Heritage Trust, they envisioned an organization that would work with local preservation groups and support them in their battles to save Mississippi’s rich architectural legacy. What an incredibly journey! With programs like the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Mississippi, MS MOD, Save My Place: Mississippi Stories of Restoration and Renewal and the Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference and Heritage Awards, the Mississippi Heritage Trust helps communities around the state in their efforts to save the treasured historic resources that make Mississippi such a special place.

• Developed a Preservation Curriculum for use in Mississippi schools to educate children about the value of preserving our precious historic resources. • Successfully listed the Raymond Historic District, Ripley Historic District, Cleveland Founders Historic District, Como Commercial Historic District, Highland Circle Historic District in Tupelo, Broad Street-Church Street Historic District in Columbia, Columbia North Residential Historic District, Eupora Historic District, Baldwyn Historic District, Forest Downtown Historic District and the Gulfport Harbor Square Commercial Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. • Completed historic district design guidelines for Philadelphia, Ripley, Columbia, Cleveland, and McComb. • Successfully nominated the Center for the Study of Southern Culture’s Barnard Observatory and the Natchez Bluff Stabilization Project for a National Trust Preservation Honor Award. • Guided the National Trust to select the Vicksburg Campaign Trail and the Threefoot Building in Meridian for the nation’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. • Successfully nominated the City of Natchez to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of Dozen Distinct Destinations. • Undertaken the ten year, $750,000 restoration of the endangered Lowry House in Jackson.

Have you ever driven past a bank in your town, admired the daring cantilevered awning and wondered about the architect? Or perhaps glimpsed a house through the trees that didn’t look anything like its neighbors and were curious about how it came to be? Architects in the mid-twentieth century defied tradition and experimented with color, form and materials to create the many fun, unusual and occasionally outlandish houses, banks, dry cleaners, hotels and schools that make up Mississippi’s historic modernist landscape. At times misunderstood when constructed, modernist buildings are now considered the “new historic”, with a whole new audience of enthusiastic building huggers awakening to the creative spirit that is embodied in modernism. From the long, horizontal lines of the International Style employed in the 33rd Avenue School in Gulfport to the festival of fountains and screens that W.W. Easley used to create the whimsical Falk House in the Eastover neighborhood of Jackson, Mississippi has a wealth of modernist treasures just waiting to be explored.

Misguided public policy. A lack of understanding about what makes a building historic and therefore worthy of preservation. Natural disasters. Lack of funding. Apathy. The threats to our historic resources in Mississippi are many and the obstacles to saving them can at times seem overwhelming. But, the rewards for the individuals and communities that are willing to take up the fight are so great. Just ask folks in Ocean Springs what downtown would be like without the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center. Or imagine Port Gibson’s iconic Church Street as an expressway. Since the first list of Mississippi's 10 Most Endangered Historic Places was published in 1999, the Mississippi Heritage Trust has shined a much-needed spotlight on 100 threatened historic places around the state. There have been some great victories, as well as crushing losses, while a number of communities are still working to find the resources and support to save their treasured churches, bridges, courthouses and schools.

With the support of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Save My Place, Mississippi Stories of Restoration and Renewal began as an online resource to tell the story of historic sites damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Through photographs and videos, residents shared their first-hand experiences of rescuing structures thought to be beyond salvage, bringing them back to life. Stories include the Biloxi Lighthouse, the Walter Anderson Cottage, Beauvoir, the 100 Men Club, the Charnley Norwood House, and more. In 2015, the 10th anniversary of this fateful storm, Save My Place hosted a gulf coast tour of 23 sites for the public to celebrate these amazing preservation victories. With the support of the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, the Mississippi Heritage Trust is developing an educational curriculum to expand Save My Place to include an outreach program to teach future generations about the values of historic preservation and environmental conservation.

The Listen Up! Historic Preservation Conference is a two-day opportunity for preservation professionals and community activitists to learn the tools and techniques to save historic places in their communities. Filled with speakers who have hands-on experience, guests learn about funding opportunities, National Register designation requirements, case studies of success stories and more. Each year, the event kicks off with a membership party and the passing of the gavel for MHT’s incoming board of directors. In 2016, the conference concludes with the presentation of the Heritage Awards, a grand affair that honors preservation successes across the state. The 2013 program, hosted in Tupelo, Mississippi, featured three historic buildings as venues - the J.J. Rogers Building, the Lyric Theatre and Goodlett Manor. The 2015 program was hosted in Hattiesburg at the lovingly restored Oddfellows Gallery. Plans for the 2016 even are well underway, this time taking us to Water Valley, a community nationally recognized for its substantial strides in rural placemaking.

When the former home of Mississippi Governor Robert Lowry was listed as endangered in 2005, the Mississippi Heritage Trust worked with Baptist Health Systems to relocate the building out of harm’s way. Thus began a ten year process of fundraising and restoration work. Documented to the 1870’s, the house is one of Jackson’s few remaining raised cottages with Greek Revival and Italianate details. Originally located on Fortification Street, it was moved to North Congress when the street was extended. With funding from the State of Mississippi Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program, administered by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and contributions from many friends and partners, the Mississippi Heritage Trust has completed the exterior restoration. The last few months have been a whirlwind of activity at the Lowry House, as MHT Special Projects Coordinator Erica Speed has brought in carpenters, plasterers, electricians and plumbers to begin the interior restoration. While there is still plenty of work to be done, the Mississippi Heritage Trust was proud to show off its progress and share the story of the Lowry House at the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Mississippi announcement on October 22. Beginning April 2016, the Lowry House will open as Jackson’s newest event venue, welcoming weddings, receptions, dinners and receptions. Preservation Toolkit Mississippi’s valuable historic resources are fragile and can be lost for a variety of reasons, including absentee landlords, poor public policy and a lack of vision. Yet, often buildings are lost not because of active intent to demolish, but rather through a lack of talent and resources needed to identify and pursue funding opportunities, administer grants and construction projects and analyze the long-term need for revenue to operate and maintain buildings. These losses are often the saddest, as communities that value their rich architectural heritage struggle and ultimately fail. With funding from the State of Mississippi, the Mississippi Heritage Trust is developing a Preservation Toolkit to assist individuals, non-profit organizations and local governments in their efforts to navigate the preservation development process. Plans for the toolkit include a printed guide, online resources and case studies of successful historic redevelopment projects, all with the objective of “demystifying” the role that grants and incentives can play in saving historic places.

MHT’s inaugural issue of Elevation made its debut at the 10th 10 Most Endangered Historic Places event, the first reception held at the Lowry House. The Fall 2015 issue featured the restoration of the Mississippi State Capitol and included articles by Speaker Phillip Gunn, Governor William Winter, Elbert Hilliard, Ken P’Pool, and others. The 2015 10 Most list was revealed, along with updates of the previous 90 sites in the program’s history. The publication closed with “Cheers to Preservation,” a standing column featuring food and spirits from across the state. Slated for quarterly publication, the goal of the journal is to engage a broad audience in a dialogue about the many benefits of historic preservation. Stories in future issues will include Case Studies for the state historic tax credit, a history of the Cooley Building in Starkville, MS MOD highlights, the Gateway to History Scenic Byway, Heritage Awards winners, the Preservation Toolkit, Save My Place Educational Program and more.
