From the

Warnings of a Worn out tire

publisher

By Rob Shewman

Checking your tires is like going to the dentist, it’s something we don’t do often enough, that we put off until we absolutely have to. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), tire failure causes around 11,000 car crashes each year. I recommend doing a quick tire inspection once a month. Here’s what to look for: Bulges, gouges or cracks When a tire deflates, it bulges at the sides. This is a sign of low tire pressure or a slow air leak. If you see cracks in the sidewall, gouges or anything that looks odd, take it in to have them looked at. Tread wear The old-school penny test is one way to check your treads: Place a penny into the tread, with Lincoln’s head pointing down. If you can still see the top of his noggin, the tread is dangerously low. Most modern tires, however, have wear bars: bits of rubber woven into the pattern at a specific depth. You can find the wear bars that go across the groove, and if the tread pattern is worn down to that wear bar, you need to replace your tire. Tire pressure Tires deflate at a rate of about one pound per square inch (PSI) per month. You’re not going to wear your tires down in a month but you should check that you have the right inflation pressure.

In this issue you’ll meet Oscar, Hail to Oscar is heartwarming story of strength, sacrafice, and perseverance. I don’t want to give you too many spoilers but Oscar was in desperate need of a liver and Amanda’s family made the heroic decision which answered his need. The sacrafices both of these families have made for the love of their children is amazing. I want to thank both families for sharing their stories with us. I need to warn you, it is an emotional story so you may want to have a tissue ready. On a lighter note, I want to introduce you to a great little place we discovered, called A Child Within where you can find doll’s clothes that cater to your inner child. And, I want to share one of the best kept secrets in the area, State Street Market has become a local “go-to” place for grabbing some great food for tailgating, a quick lunch or all the makings for a picnic in case you have the urge to go and enjoy an impromptu fall color walk. We are keeping busy with two upcoming publications. Firstly it is time for another edition of Everything Men so if anyone has a cool story idea, let us know right away. We are also working on our first ever area Business Card Directory which we will be handing out all over including the upcoming Hillsdale County Fair so be watching and take the time to enjoy some of the wonderful fall colors that are on the way. Oh, by the way, not to scare you... but the next time we talk will be the holiday edition... just sayin’.

Marlanea

TemperaTure Tire pressure drops in extreme cold. The challenge in summer is excessive heat buildup in the tire. If you’re heading out on a road trip with an underinflated tire, it will generate more heat and wear out faster. ViBraTion Watch out for vibration or thumping when you’re driving. If it feels like it’s coming from under the seats, the rear tires may be out of balance. Vibration from the steering wheel could indicate suspension issues. Anything less than a smooth ride means you should take your car in. When it’s time to replace your tires, I recommend doing so in pairs or all four at a time for better performance and traction and, ultimately, a safer ride.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year. There is a feeling of energy that comes from the cool, breezy weather. I love to relax with a hot cup of coffee on the porch. The trees blazing with color and the wind blowing the fragrance of fall all around. It is so great to live in Michigan.

Great

Dr. ravi yariD

Managing BaD Days:

We all have bad days. Days that have excessive pressure, days that kick you when you are down, days that never seem to end. In these financially stressed times, bad days seem to be more common. Some may feel that most days are bad days. Most of these bad days are associated with stress of some kind. The stress commonly is money but the stress may also be in the form of obligation or hopelessness. No matter the form, the root is the same, stress. When this rooted stress overwhelms, we have our bad day. Once we have determined that our day is bad, everything in that day seems to do nothing but add to the stressors. This effect tends to lead to persistent frustration and personal suffering. The interruption of the bad day cycle is a simple process. We generally just wait for the day to be over and after a night’s rest we start again. Instead of awaiting for nightfall, simply reset yourself. Instead of struggling through whatever seems to not be working, instead of pushing through a different path only to come up to another dead end, instead of allowing the anger and frustration of the day’s events to continue to snowball into an avalanche, reset your day. Stop what you are doing and take time for yourself. Laugh.

Pray. Meditate. Take a walk. Do something creative. Find joy in simple things. Be thankful for everything you have and release the grip of everything else. When you are able to stop the selfsustaining cycle negative emotion associated with the days “bad” events, the stressors dissipate. We can breathe again. We are able to survive the day in a more positive way. We stop finding the negative things our negative mindset is limiting us to experience in our day. Of course, this is not perfect for everyone, but no matter the particular situation, it is always possible to take a few minutes and reset. It is all done in the mind. It takes practice. Do not assume perfection the first time you try to eliminate stress in a moment, just as you do not assume you could play Beethoven the first time sitting at a piano. Anyone is able to play Beethoven, it just takes practice. Anyone is able to remove the bad days stress in a moment, it just takes practice. In fact, we can manage all stress everyday by practicing. Be aware of the stress building and practice interrupting its build up cycle within you. A life free from the crippling effect of bad days and managing your stress just takes practice. I practice this and I hope you will practice this with me.

Wearable

Fall Trends

Fashion Styles seen on the world’s most watched runways do not find their way into the wardrobes of those who operate outside the fashion industry. Some of the more artistic or unusual fashions displayed by top designers could be too extravagant for the average night on the town. But borrowing elements of runway creations can help anyone look like a budding fashionista. A special occasion may call for a look right off the runway, and such a look should be enough to put a fashionable foot forward. 11

Animal Magnetism:

Animal prints are a perennial favorite, and it’s no different this fall. Leopard print can be seen on everything from coats to skirts. If all-over leopard is too bold for you, look to accessories to add that spot of pattern. A bold leopard print scarf or funky leopard print boots can add a hint of whimsy to a relatively conservative ensemble. In addition to animal prints, some designers are now incorporating animal motifs into their collections.

Comfortable Outerwear:

While coats are supposed to keep you warm when a cold wind bites, they also are supposed to be cozy and fashionable. The newest trends in outerwear borrow inspiration from bathrobes. These trench, wraparound style coats with wide belts come in an array of colors and materials but not terry cloth. Save that for the spa.

12

Groovy Baby:

What goes around comes around, and the same can be said for influences from the decade of mod. Many designers have pulled inspiration from the fashions of the 1960s for this season’s looks. From miniskirts to knee-high boots to playful prints, it may be hard to tell whether you’re going out for a night on the town or auditioning for the “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”

Mountain Chalet:

Orange You Glad:

This season, pull out your chunky sweaters, fleecelined boots and Fair Isle prints. If you look like you can be an extra for a liveaction version of the film “Frozen,” then you should fit in well with fall fashion trends. Comfortable, oversized pieces are on point and enable anyone to look like they’re right out of a ski resort catalog. Grab a mug of hot cocoa or a goblet of wine, and you’ll fit right in.

Orange is not just for jack-o-lanterns come the fall. Orange also is a hot color for the season’s fashions. Although a bold choice, orange comes in different variations that work for just about every skin tone. Experiment with pumpkin to peachy to find the right shade for you. And like animal prints, a little may go a long way to making your outfit pop.

Make a Statement:

You no longer have to rely on bumper stickers or quirky T-shirts to give others a clue into your personality. Many designers are offering handbags with printed sentiments that make it easy for anyone to make a statement.

Art NAIL

This Trend has

NAILED IT!

T

he meaning of the manicure has been transformed in the last few years. Until recently, painted nails were a symbol of classic, grown-up elegance. Traditional shades with timeless names – pillarbox red, or ballet-slipper pink – dominated the market. But the boom in nail art and the trend for eyebrowraising colours – like steel grey, neon tangerine and moss green – have turned the rules upside down. Nails have never been so high profile in fashion and in popular culture and a new generation of young women are using nail polish to express their individuality, their fashion savvy, creativity and even their humour. From the runway to main street, nail art has emerged as a democratic form of self-expression in which anyone can participate. Spurred in part by the recession, it’s a relatively cheap temporary way to feel stylish and make a statement. Plus, it doesn’t require a mirror to bear witness to its awesomeness. Nail art – the painstaking business of painting and gluing designs and tiny jewels onto nails often lengthened with extensions to create a larger canvas – has its roots in small local salons, but has rapidly become big business and a favorite of female celebrities from the worlds of music, sport and fashion. Fresh from the manicurist, many Instagram their new looks around the world. It’s no longer just about bold solid colors or eye-catching metallics. The trend has moved on to intricate floral patterns and cartoon characters, glittery mosaics, 3-D motifs emblazoned with lace, gems, charms, foils, even magnets. The shapes of nails are even changing, from traditional round and square to diagonal and borderline-threatening almonds and pointy stilettos. Nail art has been around for as long as any of us can remember, but in the U.S., it started picking up and really becoming a noteworthy trend in the last five or so years. It started in fashion, rock and hip hop stars, consumer editorial, then in the last few years we’ve seen people like working women, who prior would only embrace a nude pink, start embracing bolder nail colors and nail art styles. If you are ready to give it a try we have several local businesses that make it their business to stay on top of what is “trending” today. We urge you to visit your favorite salon today.

nine months

takes on a whole new perspective

By Stephanie Gordon Simply Hers Magazine

I was overcome with love and joy. Her cries were music to my ears. The memory of her father’s smiles and tears will stay with me forever. Holding her in my arms for the first time was the best gift of all. Three months ago I gave birth to my daughter, Eloise Davinia Gordon. I have never felt so complete and purposeful in my life. It was a warm, sunny May afternoon. I had a follow up doctor’s appointment at the University of Michigan’s Women’s hospital in Ann Arbor. I was over due, but E (one of Eloise’s many nicknames) was healthy and content. I was impatiently awaiting her arrival, but refused induction, so we played the waiting game. I went about my day, grabbed some groceries, and drove home. Once home, I felt the need to shower. I got dressed and started preparing dinner. My husband, Matt, had worked that day and was at the gym when I suddenly felt contractions. This was it! I was excited, sad that these were the final moments of just me and my baby girl, nervous, and slightly bummed I was going into labor after a busy day with no rest. I called Matt and interrupted his gym time. “It’s time to go,” I told him. He was home in minutes. The drive to U of M was a blur to me. Matt and I talked about how this would be our last car ride together - just him and I, and we’d soon be bringing home our baby girl. We held hands, smiled, dreamed about what Eloise, got through the contractions, and relished that hour drive.

18

We checked into triage and was asked to walk the hospital to progress. How could something so easy, like walking, seem so hard? Luckily, it was evening, so not many people saw me moping around. But at that point, there’s no modesty. There was a beautiful outdoor courtyard where I walked, squatted, sat, and laid down. I remember staring up at the stars, holding Matt’s hand, wondering if I’m made to do this. I

thought back to all the advice other moms had given me. None of their advice seemed to help, except for one thing, “you can do this”. And I did! At approximately 10 PM on Tuesday, May 20, I was officially admitted to the hospital. The room was peaceful and quaint. There was a big tub, and views of Ann Arbor’s landscape for miles. Even though I was surrounded by peace and encouragement from my husband, my body was feeling differently. Minute by minute turned to hour after hour. I was being challenged, and this was harder than any CrossFit work out I had ever done. The pain that took over my body was like none other. After a long 27 hours, on Wednesday, May 21, at 9:30 PM, I started pushing. I heard Matt say, “She has hair!”, and after a few, short pushes (thank you CrossFit!), Eloise was born and in my arms at 9:49 PM. She was a perfect 7 pounds 10 ounces and 19 inches long. Her new skin on my warm skin was heavenly. I’d go through the process 100 times again for her. It’s amazing how fast nine months goes by. The labor and delivery process didn’t go exactly how I wanted, but I had my best friend by my side, the greatest nurse, Judy, and some of the brightest doctors around. Matt and I are forever grateful for a perfect experience. Our lives changed for the absolute better that day. You know how parents say having a child is like a love that’s indescribable? Well, it is. To see her smile, listen to her conversations, to be covered in her spit up, to smell her sweet skin, to watch her splash in the bath, to see her in her daddy’s arms, and to look in her sparkling eyes - there’s nothing better, and she is my greatest accomplishment. In the next issue I will tell you how I lost my baby weight - the healthy, natural way!

Muscle up - live fit.

Why I became a trainer

By James Campbell Simply Hers Magazine

I’ve always loved working out, of that there’s never been a doubt. About 10-15 years ago I thought about how awesome it would be to own a gym! But I’ll be honest, it was for no other reason other than to give myself more opportunities to do what I love to do and that’s to workout. Less than 5 years ago I decided that I was going to move on the idea, the dream, of becoming a vital heartbeat of the fitness industry. So, I enrolled in an Associates program and began the journey to personal training. I was a father of 5 children so my route to my dream was a little different than others, not to mention that I was also in my early 30’s and the idea of starting something completely new was a bit scary. I decided that if I was going to do this that the time was right and another wasted minute would’ve become a lifelong regret. I also wanted to prove to my kids that it’s never outside the realm of possibility to follow a dream. So, after a year of classroom chats, essays and all the other “college” stuff I finished my Associates and, shortly after, passed my certification exam for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). This is where a lot of things changed for me. Where I started off in a career that opened up those opportunities for me as a fitness enthusiast, now shifted in the form of reward. I always wanted to help people, always enjoyed seeing others smile larger than myself. However, what happened when I started training others was nothing short of amazing in my eyes! I watched, first hand, as my clients accomplished things that before were unimaginable! The look in someone’s eyes when they reach a goal

20

they so desperately want to achieve, seeing the tears begin to form in their eyes because they are so HAPPY, EXCITED!! It’s so genuine that there is no other reward that measures as high. When I began this path as a trainer I knew that I would never be financially “rich”, but I also had no idea the riches I was going to find myself enjoying! With every individual client I’ve worked with, I’ve watched them grow. Not only in fitness, but as an individual. I’ve seen a young man’s confidence go from “shy guy” to a young man that stands tall and is demanding to be noticed as an athlete. I’ve seen a late middle aged woman that found strength training to be, for lack of a better word, dumb and a waste of time. Within eight months, she feels that she’s found the fountain of youth and can’t believe how she’d ever lived life without it before! I’ve watched young women come to a class I offered and went through the motions to being the one person the rest of the class wants to be like! As I said, the rewards of this career I’ve chosen has nothing short of astonished me! I truly LOVE what I do EVERY DAMN DAY!! I feel like every person that comes through my door has no idea how incredible of a transformation they’re getting ready to embark on! The best part…they’re entrusting me with giving them the guidance to achieve. This is what I was meant to do! This is a life worth living! THIS IS WHY I BECAME A PERSONAL TRAINER!

START YOUR PATH

TO BETTER HEALTH WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE. Laying the foundation

Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .

PHASE 1 - RELIEF CARE

Many people go to a chiropractor because they are in pain. In this first phase of care, the main goal is to reduce your symptoms. Sometimes this will require daily visits, or two to three visits per week for a time. Most people are under the assumption that if they don’t feel any pain that there is nothing wrong with them - that they are healthy. Unfortunately, pain is a very poor indicator of health. In fact, pain and other symptoms frequently only appear after a disease or other condition has become advanced. For example, consider a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first develops or only after it has become serious? How about heart disease? Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear. When you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains.

PHASE 2 - CORRECTIVE CARE

Most chiropractors regard the elimination of symptoms as the easiest part of a persons care. If all that the chiropractor does is to reduce the pain and stop there, the chances of the condition recurring are much greater. In order to prevent a rapid recurrence of symptoms, it is necessary to continue receiving care even though your symptoms are gone. During the correction / restorative phase of your care, you will not have to receive adjustments as often as you did during the first phase of care and, depending on your particular circumstances, you may begin doing exercises and stretches either at the center or at home to help accelerate your healing. Do not be discouraged if you have mild flare-ups in your symptoms on occasion. This is normal. Flare-ups are bound to occur during this phase because your body has not fully healed. Depending on the severity of your injury or condition and how long you have been suffering from it, this phase of your care may last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

PHASE 3 - WELLNESS CARE

Once your body has fully healed, routine chiropractic care can help ensure that your physical problems do not return, and keep your body in optimal condition. Just like continuing an exercise program and eating well in order to sustain the benefits of exercise and proper diet, it is necessary to continue chiropractic care to ensure the health of your musculoskeletal system. When you make routine chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle, you avoid many of the aches and pains that so many people suffer through, your joints will last longer and you will be able to engage in more of the activities you love.

Know the Signs and Symptoms of Anemia

By Dr. Jon Herbener Simply Hers Magazine

Dr. Jon Herbener Board Certified Pediatrician Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrician Practicing in Hillsdale for 37 years Chief of Pediatricians at Hillsdale Community Health Center

If you have any topic ideas that you would like Dr. Herbener to discuss please email them to us at marlanea@simplyhers.net

24

A common topic in our office is anemia. Anemia is a condition in which blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the brain and other organs providing energy and giving skin a healthy color. They are also essential to a child’s growth and development. The most common cause of anemia in infants is a lack of iron – thus “iron deficiency anemia.” Iron is necessary for the creation of hemoglobin, the substance that enables red blood cells to deliver oxygen to various parts of the body. In full-term infants, iron deficiency usually results from a lack of iron in the baby’s diet. Babies who drink cow’s milk too early, for instance, miss out on iron because cow’s milk is a poor source of iron. Iron deficiency can also occur as a result of premature birth or excessive blood loss. Most full-term babies are born with a supply of iron that lasts about 4 months. After that, the supply diminishes and needs to be supplemented with other sources of iron, such as food, infant formula or an iron supplement. Signs and symptoms of anemia aren’t always easy to recognize. Often, babies are diagnosed with anemia as a result of a blood test done for a separate reason. In general, though, a baby with iron deficiency anemia may appear pale, tire easily, be persistently irritable and have a poor appetite.

If untreated, iron deficiency in children can cause delays in normal growth and development. Some studies show a long-term association between iron deficiency anemia in infancy and later deficits in intellectual capacity. Don’t try to treat your child on your own. Always talk to your Pediatrician before giving your baby any type of vitamins or iron supplements. In our office we routinely check for anemia at age 9 months, again at 4 years and every 3 years thereafter. If your baby has iron deficiency anemia her physician will likely recommend iron supplements, usually in a liquid form for infants. They are usually administered for about 7-9 weeks until your baby’s hemoglobin is at a healthy level. Iron medication can change your baby’s stool to a dark color so don’t be concerned if this happens. Once the iron level is back to normal it is important to be sure that she continues to get enough dietary iron through food or supplements. It is possible to overdose on iron supplements – too much iron is poisonous – so be sure to give any supplements to your child exactly as your Pediatrician recommends. Next month I will discuss the ways you can be sure your child has an adequate iron supply and how you can help prevent iron deficiency.

Make State Street Market your next stop for lunch. By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine

Looking to spice up your lunch? How about trying “The M-99,” “The Moscow” or the “The Osseo.” You won’t need to crisscross the county to find them, but you will need to hop in your car and head over to the State Street Market in Hillsdale. New owner Vivian Frudakis bought the market in December and has been making it her own ever since. A Hillsdale resident for almost 20 years, Frudakis moved to Saline in 2008 to open her catering business, but decided to move back to Hillsdale last August because she missed the “small town atmosphere” of Hillsdale. “I missed the small town feel and the friendships we have here,” she says. After looking at a few locations, Frudakis saw the market was for sale and decided it was the right fit for her. It was her love of food that started Frudakis in the catering business back in 2007 and she is happy she can share that now with the people of Hillsdale. “I want people to feel like they are getting a gift,” she says of her meals. “It sounds corny, but I want to look like it was made with love. That’s important.” With so many of her menu items made from scratch, it is easy to see the love and care she puts into her food. Frudakis makes her own tuna and chicken salads, bread, desserts and uses only the finest deli meats and freshest veggies and ingredients. All of her sandwiches and salads are made in house and to order. She says she takes great care in preparing each meal. For instance she says each of her sandwiches is carefully displayed in a clear container on a checkerboard print paper and comes with a fresh pickle, strawberry and a mint.

26 26

“I want it to be fresh and I want it to be delicious,” she says, adding that along with much of her menu being homemade, it is also made with as many natural ingredients as possible. “Everyone is treated respectfully and kindly when they come in to the store,” she says. “To me that is just as important as the quality of my food.” Frudakis, who runs the store with her daughter Christina, has recently added some outdoor seating to the market and this is just one of many additions she has brought to the store. This fall will also see a new dessert case all made in house including Vivian’s specialty - carrot cake. She’ll also have a case of freshly prepared ready-to-go wraps, salads and sandwiches. The market has a full selection of craft beers along with specialty sodas. Both of which can be purchased individually or in a mix and match six pack. She is currently featuring Osseo area honey and wine and Frudakis says she is looking for more local vendors to highlight. While the sandwiches and catering is a passion for Frudakis she still has kept the corner market feel, stocking the store with canned items, drinks, chips and other convenience store items. She also sells bait and when available will set out bread to feed the ducks. State Street Market is located at 146 State Street in Hillsdale. Menu and catering options are available at www.statestmarket.com or by phone 517-437-2527. The market is open Monday to Wednesday 9:30a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m.

Gray Matters

Back to school blues? When you are a stay-at-home mom (or whatever PC term is being used these days) there really is no such thing as summer vacation. All the days just seem to melt together.

By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine

So when my oldest started school a few years ago I began to see what is was like to have a few hours of one less kid in the house. Last year I got to see that magic times two when my son started preschool. And this year, well, this year all three of my adorable, sweet, very loud children will be attending school. *Insert squealing noise here* The little one will only be gone a few hours each morning, but still it is a couple hours all to myself. I might even be able to have a coherent thought, or finish a cup of coffee while it’s still hot. But let’s not get greedy, Sarah. I envision trips to the grocery store where I don’t have to tell a child to put something down or come back here (at least not without getting some strange looks). I might actually get my hair cut – something I have only gotten around to doing once since we moved here a year ago (that one I’ll take the heat on, but still it will be nice). I even might get to write an entire article for this publication start to finish without being interrupted a dozen times. So while many parents may dread the start of the school year and their kids going back to school – I must admit I won’t. I love my kids I

28

really do, but after four months of the yelling and fighting and complaining and whining I won’t shed too many tears when they skip off to their classrooms. Luckily there has been plenty of smiling and hugs and laughter as well. Plus I am happy to say they are all completely ready to go. My soon-to-be second grader has been asking when school was going to start since the end of July. My son is excited to be going the “big kid” school for pre-K and my youngest was so excited to start preschool that it was her main motivation to become potty trained. (Thank you Ms. Jen! We are now diaper free for the first time in seven and a half years!) I know I should be sad and I will admit that there is a small part of me that is. No more babies at home. No more snuggling on the couch in our pajamas on a Tuesday or spontaneous stops at the bakery for a donut on a Thursday. I know I will miss the tiny little hand grabbing mine as we walk across the parking lot. But I know I am lucky that I DID get all that time with them and while I may hold back a tear as my older kids climb on that big yellow school bus and my youngest hangs her new backpack on her hook for the very first time, I realize they are growing up and this is just the next step in our lives. That brings me to another realization – Mama needs a job!

Simply Hilar ious A husband came home to find his wife throwing away the bottle of shampoo. Although he was certain he would regret the answer he just had to ask why. She quickly explained the reason behind her decision.

I don’t know WHY I didn’t figure this out sooner! I use shampoo in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body, and printed very clearly on the shampoo label this warning; “FOR EXTRA BODY AND VOLUME.” No wonder I have been gaining weight!

with dishwashing soap. It’s label reads, “DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE.”

Problem solved! The husband simply looked at her, quietly picked up his paper and went into the living room. No warning label needed to tell him not to go there.

Well! I got rid of that shampoo and I am going to start showering

Legal Documents:

Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones

By Timothy E. Dixon Simply Hers Magazine

When contemplating life and death matters, some common questions arise such as: Who will raise my children if I die while they are minors? What control do I have over the beneficiaries of an inheritance? Who will handle my finances if I become unable to handle them myself? Who will make medical decisions for me if I become unable? How can I control what happens to me if I am being kept alive by artificial machinery? The legal documents available to address these and similar inquiries consist of Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, Durable Powers of Attorney, Durable Powers of Attorney for Medical Care, and Living Wills. Some of these documents are known by other names, such as Patient Advocate, Living Trust, etc., but they still accomplish the same goals. A will takes affect when you die and it names a person or entity to administrate your estate, named a personal representative in Michigan. The personal representative is responsible to collect your assets, pay your debts, and distribute your estate according to your directions. A will may also address your burial wishes and name a guardian for your minor children. A will is probated and becomes a public record. Trusts are legal devices that involve transferring ownership of property to the trust’s trustee. The trustee then administers the trust property for its beneficiaries, which may include managing your investments and assets, paying your debts, distributing assets upon your death and/or distributing them over many years after your death. A trust can be designed to keep a special needs child from losing government assistance, to

30

spread an inheritance over many years, and to protect a child’s inheritance from the child’s creditors. As a rule, trusts do not require court involvement and so typically remain private. Powers of Attorney, Durable Powers of Attorney and Durable Powers of Attorney for Medical Care all name an individual to act as your agent. This means you provide the named individual with authority to legally act on your behalf for financial matters and/ or medical matters. The agent’s authority in financial matters can be extensive or limited based on the authority you provide your agent in the document. The agent’s authority in medical matters can only arise when you are deemed incapable of handling matters yourself, and once you regain your wits their authority stops. To enable any agent to have the legal authority to act during your incapacity, however, the document must be durable. This means it must have the required wording to remain effective upon disability. Regardless, the authority these documents provide end upon your death. A living will describes the medical care you want to receive if you have a terminal illness and are being kept alive by artificial means. It provides your family with guidance and direction as to your desires and may provide comfort to them if decisions are made to disconnect life sustaining equipment. Know, however, that if you fail to plan for incapacity and death, Michigan will make these decisions for you through its court system.

My Journey

UNEXPECTED INSPIRATION

By Ashley Price Simply Hers Magazine

“If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right to your purpose”. – Bishop T.D. Jakes.

This year has been a very stressful one. Between completing my final project for my Master’s degree program and graduating from that, moving… again, trying to start a business and failing with all the plans I’ve tried so far, and working two jobs with uncertain futures; the bar was for sale most of the year and just got bought out by new owners and my boss at the other job just got fired. Not to mention, I’ve still got so many goals planned to finish through the rest of this year. So needless to say, I was ready for a vacation. So we packed our bags and decided to go camping in Custer State Park, which is nestled in the heart of the Black Hills of South Dakota. After a six hour drive we arrived at our destination; a crystal blue lake surrounded by beautiful rolling hills. We set up camp at Center Lake campground and spent the next four days camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, cave dwelling, zip lining and exploring the attractions around the area, including Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument. We rounded out our vacation at a Willie Nelson concert in Deadwood, South Dakota. Mt. Rushmore was neat to see and it’s been on my North Dakota bucket list since I’ve moved here but the real impressive and amazingly unexpected thing I witnessed was Crazy Horse. It is a massive undertaking that has been going on since the 1940’s, they say the entire carving of Mt. Rushmore will fit inside of Crazy Horse’s head! But the real amazing thing about Crazy Horse is the back story. Going to college at Central Michigan University and learning about the Chippewa tribe and other indigenous people as part of our program plan, I already had a peaked curiosity and interest in first nation’s issues and a special place in my heart for the original settlers of this land.

According to the informational video, sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski was a young Polish immigrant who had a rough upbringing in and out of foster homes and one day he just decided he wanted to be a sculptor. Korczak was completely self-taught, working his craft on wood, marble and

everything in between, sixteen years later he was assisting Gutzon Borglum in carving Mt. Rushmore At which time Chief Standing Bear approached Korczak about creating a monument to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians. Over the past sixty years, Korczak and his family have dedicated their lives to erecting this monument and paying tribute to the first people of this nation. This project is and always has been 100% completely privately funded. Today, along with the monument, they have a visitor and information center that is The Indian Museum of Native American, they have created the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, and the Indian University of North America and they also still plan to build a medical training center for Native Americans. Crazy Horse is much more than just a sculpture. This to me is the epitome of the American Dream. Korczak had a vision and a dream, and he made it happen. In the end, he dedicated his craft and his life to a cause he felt overwhelmingly worthy and something that he needed to do: not for money but to tell a story with stone and honor the Native American people like no one else could. That experience just blew me away. We went there first and Mt. Rushmore second and to be frank, Mt. Rushmore left a lot to be desired. I’m glad I saw it, but I wasn’t nearly as impressed as I was about thirty minutes prior. Another thing that blew me away was watching Willie Nelson perform. This is a man in his 80’s who has been chasing his passion and living his dream of music practically his entire life. It truly is inspiring. This vacation was the shot in the arm I needed. I feel renewed and ready to follow my passion and to figure out my purpose in this crazy life. I hope you can too!

The basics of boosting metabolism Men and women looking to shed a few pounds and keep those pounds off often look for ways to boost their metabolisms. Some may not know just what metabolism means, and though it is a complicated combination of processes, metabolism is perhaps best explained as the sum of those processes, each of which is instituted to convert food into energy. So it’s no surprise that so many people, especially men and women whose metabolisms have begun to slow down, want to boost their metabolism and turn that food into energy more quickly. Though metabolism is a collection of complicated processes, boosting metabolism can be rather easy. The following are a handful of ways to do so, which can help men and women reach their fitness goals. * Eat the right foods and eat more often. Many adults have been turned on to the concept of grazing, an approach to diet wherein adherents eat small portions of food every two to three hours instead of the more traditional three square meals per day. But grazing is only effective when men and women eat the right foods. Each small meal should still have nutritional value just as if it were a large meal. When eating smaller meals, include healthy sources of protein and fiber. Vegetables tend to be especially beneficial because they are high in fiber, a nondigestible carbohydrate that is hard for the body to break down. As the body works hard to break down fiber, it’s burning energy and boosting its metabolism along the way. Fish is another potentially beneficial food for those looking to boost their metabolisms, as studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils increase the levels of fat-burning enzymes in the body while decreasing the body’s level of fat-storage enzymes. Eating more often benefits the body because doing so stimulates metabolism, reassuring the body that food will be coming on a regular basis. When meals are skipped or there are long intervals between meals, the body reacts as if it might run out of food and begins to store fat.

34

* Add some lean muscle. Lean muscle can boost metabolism, so a workout dominated by cardiovascular exercise won’t have as positive an impact on metabolism as one that includes a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. When muscles are worked hard, the body needs to work hard to recover and rebuild those muscles, burning more calories and boosting metabolism as a result. * Don’t believe everything you read or hear. Suggestions abound as to ways to significantly improve metabolism. Unfortunately, many of these suggestions boost metabolism but not enough to help people lose weight, which is the ultimate goal of many people looking to boost their metabolisms. For example, green tea has its proponents who feel it can have a significant impact on metabolism thanks to EGCG, a compound found in the tea that has been proven to elevate metabolism. However, the impact of EGCG on boosting metabolism is negligible, and therefore won’t make much of an impact on a person’s weight. The same can be said about capsaicin, an active component found in chili peppers that some feel boosts metabolism enough to promote weight loss. Though capsaicin can boost metabolism slightly, studies have shown that influence is not significant enough to affect a person’s weight. * Don’t get too comfortable. Modern technology may be a reason why waist sizes are getting bigger. Heating and cooling systems may be must-have items, but when the body is too comfortable, it burns less energy to stay warm in the winter or comfortably cool in the summer. A study from the National Institute of Health Clinical Center found that people who slept in a room kept at 66 F burned 7 percent more calories than those who slept in a room at 75 F. Sleeping in a cooler room may just be the easiest way for men and women to boost their metabolisms. Boosting metabolism and shedding extra pounds is a goal for many men and women. But while metabolism is a complex set of processes, the various ways to effectively boost that metabolism can be quite simple.

ORGANIZING YOUR CHILD’S CLOSET- AS EASY AS ABC!

S.O.S. Sort, Organize, and Simplify Your Life!

By Peggie Bildner Simply Hers Magazine

As summer winds down, many households are trying to get into back-to-school mode. So I thought it might be time to look at some organizing ideas for kids’ closets. School day mornings will go a lot smoother if you take some time to get their closets in order. If possible, involve your child(ren). It’s always a good idea to periodically do size-checks on the items taking up closet space and it may encourage their cooperation if they have been able to offer input on what they want to wear and understand the organizing system. Here are 10 tips to get you started:

6. Create a “home” for shoes. Rather than a shoe rack or hanging bag (that will probably never be used), it may be easiest to designate a dishpan or plastic tote on the closet floor. 7. For younger children, install a hanging accessory bag with at least seven shelves. Label each shelf with a day of the week and place an outfit, complete with underwear and socks, on each shelf. Get in the habit of filling the shelves at the start of each new week or as you take care of clean laundry.

8. Make sure the closet has good lighting. If 1. First, take everything out of the closet and there isn’t a light or electrical to install one, sort. Leave only the in-season and current sized purchase a battery operated one and make sure clothing. the child can reach it. This will avoid “losing” items to a dark corner. 2. Use the highest shelf to store out-of-season clothes or hand-me-downs from an older 9. Add hooks at the child’s level for nightwear, sibling. Store in labeled containers by season book bags, hats, etc. They are much more likely (fall/winter, spring/summer) or by size (3T, for to use a convenient hook than to put something example). on a hanger. 3. Place a cardboard box in a convenient spot 10. If the closet must hold toys and books too, for items they no longer wear. As the child add baskets or wheeled carts with bins that you outgrows items, they can immediately be put in can label for designated items. the donation box. As with all organizing projects, it’s important 4. Pair up matching outfits and store them on to take a few minutes on a regular basis to keep one hanger. This will really streamline morning things sorted, organized and simplified- the dressing and (hopefully) avoid last minute S.O.S. key to a successful school year! arguments. 5. Place a dirty clothes hamper in or beside the closet. Kids are more likely to use a hamper/ clothes basket when it is close to where they change clothes.

HAIL to OSCAR A little boy’s courageous journey back to health By Sarah Gray, Simply Hers Magazine

Alicia and Jeremy Curtis are huge University of Michigan fans. Their favorite team’s fight song has added meaning today after what they have been through with their own “conquering hero” – their two-year-old son Oscar. “He has done exceedingly well,” Alicia says with pride as she gazes lovingly at her baby boy. This active little toddler is night and day different from the little boy she snuggled in a hospital bed just ten months ago. Since he was born in 2012 Oscar may have spent as much time in the hospital as he did at his home. As she sits cross-legged on the couch with “Thomas the Tank Engine” playing in the background, Alicia recalls that even before Oscar was born she knew something was wrong. “I have always had tough pregnancies,” the Jackson resident said of being

pregnant with her oldest son Brady, now five, and middle son Oliver, who recently turned four. The feeling didn’t go away after Oscar was born March 5, 2012. Born with a heart murmur, Oscar was able to go home days after being born, but Alicia couldn’t shake the feeling that something was not right with her new baby. Those feelings were confirmed when she took Oscar along to Brady’s three year well child visit. “Our pediatrician thought his color looked off,” Alicia recalls. “Oscar was a greenish yellow color, but he wasn’t jaundice.” After his blood work and bilirubin levels came back with worrisome results, the family went straight to Grand Rapids for more tests. It was there they learned that Oscar had Biliary Atresia – a rare liver disorder that affects only about 200 children per year. This disorder meant that he was born without any bile ducts or gallbladder. The only real treatment for Oscar now was a liver transplant.

39

So at a mere seven months old Oscar has to undergo the first of many operations. This operation helped to open up his liver and “buy him some time,” Alicia says. The first surgery was successful, but Oscar was having trouble gaining weight, as children with liver disease have a faster metabolism than other children. Oscar now has to be fed through a tube. His liver however, is not Oscar’s only organ in trouble. In addition to Biliary Atresia, Oscar was also born with two ventral septal defects which are holes in the wall that separates the right and left ventricles of the heart. This required him to have open heart surgery in December 2012 – at just nine-months-old. Like the superhero that he is Oscar came through the surgery well. He started gaining weight. He is happy and full of smiles. But he is also very tired and sleeps most of the time. In time however, his liver begins to distend and it becomes clear that he needs a liver transplant soon. Now the family is spending much of their time, and also all their holidays, at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. Alicia and Jeremy began taking educational classes through the hospital to help them learn more about the transplant process and what to expect. In September 2013 Oscar is admitted in the hospital for complications. He stays for three weeks. After being home for only a week, he returns with more complications for a week and half. He comes home just once more before he is readmitted and stays for the next three and half months. “He was losing a lot of blood,” Alicia explains, adding that her son underwent regular blood transfusions. Family and friends lend a hand During this time she and Jeremy would take turns staying at the hospital with Oscar while the other was at home with their older sons. Alicia took a leave of absence from her teaching job at Michigan Center Schools and Jeremy, a nurse practitioner, was only working part-time. Alicia says she is so grateful to all of her family and friends to helped to take care of her boys and the family dogs while Oscar was in the hospital. Fundraisers were also held to help offset costs and Alicia recalls opening her mail and finding checks for her family. “It’s very humbling,” she says of the monetary gifts her family has received. Although the family does have health insurance, Alicia notes there are many other costs outside of the hospital that needed to be paid. “Without the help of so many people, we would be bankrupt,” she says.

40

With so many people hearing about and helping her son, Alicia and Jeremy decided to start the Facebook page “Hail to Oscar” where they could update friends and family on his health and share pictures of both his good days and his bad ones.

By the end of November, Oscar’s health is a daily struggle. Fevers, blood loss, blood clots and a myriad of other problems plague him almost constantly. As his health continues to decline, Oscar is moved farther and farther up the transplant list. Late one night in early January, Alicia was at home with her older sons when she got a call from Jeremy that the transplant was on. Alicia raced to the hospital, but hours later she and Jeremy were told the liver was not the right fit and the transplant was off. Thankfully, Oscar did not have to wait much longer. On January 28, 2014 at 8:30 p.m. Oscar underwent an eight hour surgery to replace his liver. After just two hours of recovery, he had to go right back in for another five hour surgery because a major artery was not clotting. More difficulty stopping the bleeding resulted in another three hour surgery. “The day is a blur,” Alicia recalls admitting that she does not remember all of it. She does remember standing next to his son’s crib in pediatric intensive care and her legs shaking because she was so tired. Post transplant, Oscar stayed on a ventilator for three days. He was sedated throughout that time but he sensed that his Mommy was near. “Whenever his blood pressure would go up I would walk over to his crib and rub his legs and it would immediately go down,” she says with a smile. Those three days she spent in her son’s room were mainly in a rocking chair next to his crib, comforting her son the best way she could. Thankfully after the surgery Oscar began improving by leaps and bounds. Typical recovery time in the hospital post transplant is four weeks. Oscar was able to go home after just two and a half. This Easter was a particularly joyful one for the Curtis family as it was the first holiday the family was able to spend together at home. “He is a completely different kid,” Alicia says of Oscar. “If he keeps along this path he will be great.”

Amanda’s gift While the story of Oscar appears to have a happy ending it is actually more bittersweet. While Oscar was given a wonderful gift, it did come at the loss of another. The Curtis family learned that Oscar’s new liver was that of a little girl named Amanda Lynn, born just 17 days after Oscar, who had just passed away. (See A little girl’s gift of life) Several months after the transplant Alicia and Jeremy wrote a letter to Amanda’s parents Emma and Brian Allen, who live in Saginaw. The transplant was coordinated through Gift of Life Michigan and due to the sensitive and private nature of the process both parties had to agree before contact could be made. After communicating through letters and texts, the two families decided to meet at the end of July.

“How do you say thank you for something like that?” Alicia says with tears in her eyes. She says Oscar and the Allens hit it off right away and they even gave him one of Amanda’s stuffed animals – a stuffed moose – which Oscar sleeps with. “The heartache we have for Amanda and her family will never go away,” Alicia says calling Amanda Oscar’s “angel.” Alicia has also gotten a tattoo in remembrance of Amanda. The Curtis and Allen families plan to keep in touch but will take some time before they see each other again. “We all need some time to heal,” she says.

Getting back to ‘normal’

Brayden played hockey. At 18 months old Amanda decided she wanted to be potty trained and was nearly trained all day and all night. Five days before she died she started sleeping in her “big girl” bed. On January 23, 2014 however, Amanda went into cardiac arrest while at her babysitter’s house. Medical staff was able to bring her back but she had no brain activity. Doctors told Emma and her husband Brian she had suffered a traumatic brain injury. As of now they still don’t know how this occurred. The day before Amanda’s death a representative from the Gift of Life spoke with the Allen’s about donation.

Oscar is doing well, continuing to improve and the family is trying to get back to normal – which is a lot different than most people’s normal. “I don’t know how to go from worrying to not worrying,” Alicia says. “I still don’t sleep that much.” These past two years have been difficult for Alicia and Jeremy but they also have been tough on Brady and Oliver, too. “They have had to grow up a lot. It has taken a toll on them.”

“My husband and I kind of just looked at each other and knew that it was the right thing to do,” Emma said. “It was actually an easy decision for us, we didn’t really think about it too much.”

Oscar regularly sees a physical therapist and a speech therapist. His extended hospital stays have delayed his mobility and Alicia said he has only been walking a few months. In addition, he has brittle bones and has broken his femur twice. His speech is also delayed due to constantly have tubes down his throat.

Emma, an Emergency Medical Technician and Brian, who works for the Saginaw Spirit hockey team, said that hearing from the Curtis’ was very emotional. Emma says the first time she read the letter (and each time since) she cried half way through it. She says they learned a lot about Oscar through the Hail to Oscar Facebook page and both she and her husband like that they are able to see how he is doing.

Alicia and Jeremy also have to be concerned about him getting sick. All of his health issues have resulted in him having no immune system, so a cold or flu bug could land him in the hospital for a week or more. Plus medication to treat simple illnesses can conflict with the daily medication he takes for his transplant. It’s no wonder there are bottles of hand sanitizer outside of every room and air purifiers throughout the house. “He will always have some issues,” she says, adding that he will always be on medication, and will need to exercise regularly and eat right so as to not put any added stress on his liver. Alicia and her family are so grateful to everyone who have done so much for them; they are doing all they can to give to pay it forward. In addition to becoming organ donors themselves, Alicia has also become a Gift of Life volunteer. She encourages everyone to educate themselves on organ donation. “There are so many people who pass away every day because they don’t have the organ they need.” The family has also organized donations to the Ronald McDonald House in Ann Arbor. “We are happy right now,” she says with a grin. “The happiest we’ve been in a long time.”

A little girl’s gift of life Amanda Lynn Allen was born on March 22, 2012. “She was full of energy,” says her mom Emma, “always happy, always smiling. She liked to wear her dresses and have her bows in her hair but she could still get down and dirty while playing. She was a tough little cookie.” Amanda loved hanging out at the hockey rinks where her father worked and her older brother

In addition to donating her liver to Oscar, Amanda also donated both of her kidneys to a 76-yearold woman from Michigan and her heart to an 18-month-old boy from Tennessee.

“We get all choked up on some occasions when they put these awesome pictures up, like a balloon release in Amanda’s memory on the 100 day post transplant” Emma says. “On six months post transplant they took a picture of Oscar in front of a cake that said ‘Thank You Amanda Lynn,’ and I lost it! It is so comforting to know that Amanda will forever live on in that household as well as in that little boy.” Emma says meeting Oscar was very emotional for her. “It was very rewarding to see how well Oscar is doing and it is all because of Amanda.” She was also touched when she learned Alicia had gotten a tattoo in memory of her daughter. “I have also gotten several tattoos in Amanda’s honor,” Emma said. She says she has also gotten an Oscar the Grouch tattoo in honor of Oscar. “Alicia got me a bracelet with Oscar’s initials on it that I wear each and every day, and she has one with Amanda’s initials. It really is like our two families have kind of become one,” Emma said. “It truly is amazing how they have opened up themselves for us.” The Allen family is in the process of starting a scholarship fund in Amanda’s memory that will be awarded each year to a living organ donor, an organ donor recipient or the sibling of a donor who has passed away. They are also planning a fundraiser/ organ donation awareness night at a Saginaw Spirit game and want Alicia, Jeremy, Oscar and the rest of the family come up and be recognized. There will also be a Red Cross blood drive that night.

All Dolled Up By Sarah Gray Simply Hers Magazine

Dolls of all shapes and sizes can get dressed to the nines with the help of The Child Within doll clothing and accessory shop in the Camden area. “I see little girls growing up too quickly,” says owner Ruth Anne Bonnau of her mission for the business. “They are missing out on childhood. I thought if they had attractive clothes the girls would want to play with dolls longer.” Bonnau, who taught elementary school at CamdenFrontier for 31 years, began making doll clothes for her own daughters when they were young. She learned to sew when she was little from her grandmother and continued to hone her skill through 4-H and home economics in high school. “It’s something you can always use,” she says of sewing. Although she mostly made Barbie clothes when her girls were young she began making clothes for larger dolls more than 20 years ago when her daughter introduced her to the American Girl doll company. She noted that then – before the company was bought out by Mattel – people could buy the doll clothes patterns directly from The Pleasant Company, named after its founder Rosemary Pleasant. She started making clothes for the dolls and selling them at area craft shows before opening the shop behind her house more than 10 years ago. Along with clothes for American Girl dolls, she also makes clothes for Cabbage Patch dolls, Build-A-Bear stuffed animals, Barbie dolls and dolls eight, 10 and 14 inches tall. She also carries accessories including bags and hats made by friends, shoes, tea sets, coats and other small

furniture. Sewing machines for younger girls, who are just getting started in sewing, are for sale at her shop as well as a variety of dolls – although she does not sell American Girl dolls. She encourages girls coming to her shop to bring their dolls so they can try on the clothes to make sure look and fit just right. In addition to her shop, Bonnau also sells her wears at craft shows in the tri-state area and Texas, where she and her husband spend their winters. One event she looks forward to attending is Doll-a-Rama at Tibbits Theater in downtown Coldwater. Here girls are encouraged to bring their dolls (and dress alike) to attend a “high tea,” crafts, activities and a fashion show. Adjacent to her shop is Bonnau’s workshop where she has stacks of materials and clothing to make her doll clothes. She also has spools and spools of ribbons, laces and many drawers of buttons to trim out her pieces. While she says she always starts with a pattern, she will often mix and match them to create different looks. “I’d say I evolved,” she says of her sewing skills over the years. Bonnau’s shop, located at 13600 Mead Rd., is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless she is on the road. Her upcoming events include November 8 at the Fairview Missionary Church in Angola IN, November 8 at Doll-a-Rama at the Tibbits Theater in Coldwater, November 15 at Santa’s Bag in Marshall, November 22 at the Sand Creek craft show, November 29 at the Mattawan craft show and December 6 at St. Mary’s craft show in Bronson. For more information about upcoming shows or items she carries Bonnau can be reached at 517-398-5262.

Are You a Baby Boomer? Don’t Let Retirement Plans If you’re a baby boomer, you’re at the point in life where, if you haven’t actually entered retirement, you’re at least approaching the outskirts. But if you’re like many of your fellow boomers, you may be experiencing more than a little trepidation over your financial prospects as a retiree. That’s why it’s so important for you to determine what steps to take to help improve your chances of enjoying a comfortable retirement.

Just how worried are baby boomers about their future? Consider these numbers: Seventy-two percent of non-retired boomers think they will probably be forced to delay retirement, and 50% have little confidence that they will ever be able to retire, r financial advisors the Hillsdale County according to a in recent AARP survey. Other surveys show a similarly bleak outlook ones among office near you, boom call 1-800-ED-JONES. the baby generation.

Go Bust.

• You may be able to delay taking Social Security. You can start taking Social Security as early as age 62, but your benefits will be permanently reduced unless you wait until your Full Retirement Age (FRA), which will likely be 66 or 67. Your payments can increase if you delay taking your benefits beyond your Full Retirement Age, up to age 70. • You may be able to delay tapping into your retirement vehicles. The longer you wait until you begin withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k), the more time you are giving these accounts to potentially grow. (Once you turn 70 ½, you will need to generally start taking withdrawals from a traditional IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, but you don’t face this requirement with a Roth 401(k) account.)

Fortunately, when it comes to building resources for retirement, you have options. Of course, if you’re in one of the younger age Patillo cohorts of the baby boom generation, your dvogel Matthew possibilities are greater — you .may still have time to take measures such as boosting 6 W Carleton your 401(k) and IRA contributions, reducing your debts and positioning your portfolio 49242 Hillsdale, MI 49242 to provide you with a reasonable amount of growth potential. 1 517-437-1301

As an alternative to delaying your retirement — or possibly as an additional step you can take along with a delay — you may be able to adjust your investment mix to provide you with the combination of growth and income that can help carry you through your retirement years. You can also be strategic about which investments you start taking withdrawals from, possibly allowing your portfolio to grow more than you had envisioned.

But even if you are pretty close to retirement, or at least close to the point where you initially expected to retire, you can act to better your outcome. Have you ever said yes to something you really had no intention of even thinking about doing? You were hoping to avoid the situation altogether and then out of nowhere you’re blindsided … by your very own husband! It happened to me recently and I hope it’s going to very quickly put my husband right over the edge.

By Willie Smith Simply Hers Magazine

I walked in the door one day just as our voice mail kicked in so I heard Emma’s voice clearly say she’d like me to present a devotional at her annual cookout. What? Me? She wanted me to get up in front of people and talk? She has the wrong girl. My first thought was that ain’t never gonna happen. My second thought confirmed the first when I heard my brain repeating, Ain’t. Never. Gonna. Happen. All I had to do was avoid Emma for a few days so she would ask someone else. Smart, huh? Well it would have been had I mentioned it to my husband. Unfortunately for me I didn’t so when Emma called back later he told her he was sure I’d be delighted to help her out and he’d have me call as soon as I got home. Well dang! Now what was I going to do? Thanks to my husband I couldn’t avoid Emma now. I had to call her back, but before she even opened her mouth I planned to tell her I would absolutely, positively in no way, shape or form talk to a bunch of people. Nope; no way; not gonna do it. I kept repeating those words to myself as Emma’s phone rang. Let me tell you about Emma so you can understand my dilemma. She is truly one of the nicest, sweetest people I know. She’s a tiny little thing and always has a big smile on her face. I swear there is not one mean bone in her body, but no matter how sweet she is, I was still going to turn her down flat. No, Emma, really, I can’t, I won’t. No! No!! No!!! Guess what? As soon as she answered the phone with that small, sweet voice I heard myself say yes, of course I’ll help you Emma. Yep, whatever you need.

48 46

What!? I heard myself say those words, and I was still shocked. Where did they come from? Whose voice was that? It sure sounded like me, but it couldn’t have been. I

would NEVER say yes to something like that. That’s not the kind of girl I am. I just don’t do those kinds of things. I can talk up a storm on paper, but to get up in front of people and have them stare at me waiting for me to say something intelligent? No! I wanted to tell Emma, Wait!! I meant to say no. I’m sorry, I just can’t do it, but do you think I could get those words out of my mouth? Nope, I couldn’t utter a sound, not one word. I knew it would be the same thing if I tried to talk to that group of people. I would just stand there, stare at them with my mouth open and nothing would come out. Emma apparently didn’t realize I had stopped talking because she thanked me for helping her out, said she’d see me at 6:30 and hung up. I stood there staring at the phone with my mouth open saying nothing when my husband walked in the door and asked me what was wrong. I was so mad at him! Why in the world did he tell Emma I would call her back? Why did he answer the phone in the first place? He knows I can’t talk to people. He should have told Emma no, Willie will not call you back! She does not talk to people, but did he do that? No. He should have known better. What is wrong with that man? Well, I did end up talking that night. Actually I just read from a piece of paper and never once looked up. I was so nervous I thought for sure I would puke, but I didn’t. Lucky for my husband ‘cause he was gonna clean it up if I had. The only thing that got me through that night was the thought of all the things he had promised me to make up for his mistake. Shopping trip #1 – Caller ID. If Emma’s name ever comes up again, there will be no answering the telephone! Once my husband gets the credit card bills from shopping trips 2, 3 and 4, I doubt he’ll ever answer the phone again for any reason anyhow. I must say as mad as I was at him for causing me this problem, I think it might almost worth it. I’m gonna enjoy watching him go right over the edge.

pet taLEs From Kacie’s Korner By Kacie Keeshond Simply Hers Magazine ‘Mom’ likes to joke that I am a celebridog because sometimes people we’ve never met will call me by name. Once when I was at a car dealership with my ‘Dad’ a man said, “Is this Kacie from the magazine?” I also have a queen-like sitting position when I ride in the van; ‘Mom’ says she half expects me to lift my paw and do a pageant wave! I do lead a pretty pampered life but nothing like real celebrity dogs. I’ve heard that some even go on trips flying first class and have their own personal chefs. Here’s a few more fun facts we found about famous people and their pets, that you might find interesting ~ • Britney Spears once bought her Chihuahua, Bit Bit, a steak in a restaurant for $180. • When Jennifer Aniston’s dog, Norman died she had his name tattooed on her right foot.

• Oprah has 5 dogs; Martha Stewart has 6. But Paris Hilton tops them both with 17! • Paris Hilton’s dogs have their own villa, complete with a spiral staircase, furniture, chandelier and balcony. • Usher paid $12,000 for a Goldendoodle puppy at a charity auction. • Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds had her Maltipoo, Penny, and his rescue mutt, Baxter, in their wedding. • Jessica Simpson carries her dog, Daisy, in a Louis Vuitton bag. • Even President Obama shares the White House with a Portugese Water Dog named Bo. • Oprah has a 30 million dollar trust fund set up for her dogs.

• Hillary Duff’s puppy, Lola, appeared on “The View” and was featured on the cover of “Hollywood Dog Magazine”, decked out in diamonds. • Mariah Carey’s Jack Russell terrier, Jack, rides around town in a chauffeur driven Mercedes. Most of us will never know this kind of extravagant lifestyle and to tell the doggone truth, we dogs actually think it’s pretty silly! All we really want is love, a soft place to lay down, an occasional ear scratch, some exercise and treats…..LOTS and LOTS of treats!! So I’ll end with one more fact that warms my puppy-tummy ~ •I n 2013, Rachael Ray donated $500,000 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and four tons of her food brand, Nutrish, to Sandy-victim animals.

My DFF (Dog Friend Furever): Bear My buddy, Bear, is a one year old, 120 pound German Shepherd. Bear used to come to my house to play with me but he’s gotten so big, it’s hard to fit him in his ‘Dad’s’ truck cab! He was a Birthday present that just keeps on giving! Bear was welcomed into his ‘family’ by three cats, Lily, Cici and Bubba. They were very leery of the big, clumsy guy that upset their cat kingdom but over this past year they have become the best of friends. Bear and Cici play all the time and can even be found curling up for a nap together! Bear’s favorite thing to do is chase and retrieve a ball and his ‘Dad’ says he wears out long before Bear does. When he has to wait for play time he will sit at his ‘Dad’s’ desk and stare at him while he works. This can go on for several hours if necessary! Living in the country with lots of room to run and explore, Bear is one happy dog.

When do online “chats” become online cheating?

Have you ever found yourself spilling your guts to someone online instead of your significant other? At times life gets hard, the kids are demanding, the job is demanding and yes, even the love of your life is demanding. When you don’t think you can stand one more demand you bury yourself in a virtual world where no one makes demands on you. Except perhaps that cousin who keeps posting the cutest cat image that says if you don’t forward in 10 seconds something terrible might happen. One evening, you find yourself spilling everything to an old flame who “friended” you. One conversation leading to another until you find yourself looking forward to logging in and seeing what he has to say. Instead of complaining about not having a clean shirt for work, he praised you for something you thought would go unnoticed. He complimented your pictures and made you feel good about yourself. As time passed you realized you enjoy talking to your old flame more than your spouse. It is time for a reality check. Your on-line connection has become a crush. According to the experts you are not alone, not by a long shot. Nearly 50% of relationship breakups implicate social media as one of the primary causes. What starts as a friendly email becomes a bit too personal but because there is no physical contact we allow ourselves to rationalize it and it can escalate fast. Compared to the demanding day to day relationship you are in, contact with him is nothing but pleasure. The excitement of his text, IM or private message can make it into something that feels almost like an addiction.

50

There is a term for this flirting that sheds light on what it truly is “Cyber cheating”. If you are cyber cheating you need to understand that you are probably addicted to a fantasy romance that seems better than the relationship you have in real life. But, people don’t tell the truth when they are cyber cheating and the guy who seems like Mr. Fabulous is not so fabulous in person. It is important to know an online flirtation can bring a relationship to its knees and lead to a breakup of something that otherwise was working. It can tear apart families just as completely as meeting someone for an afternoon trist. Let’s face it, if you and your partner are dealing with a tough issue, instead of pushing through it and communicating, cyber cheating can allow one of the parties to give up and rely on empty words from someone who doesn’t have to deal with the reality of a true relationship. One way to avoid this all together is to have an “open password” relationship. All accounts should be accessible to the other and there should be no “secret” accounts. If you find yourself writing a message that you wouldn’t want your partner to read you shouldn’t send it. Couples do not go from being head over heels in love to divorce court overnight. It happens gradually, over time, and if you find yourself sharing something with someone who isn’t your partner you need to acknowledge that you are taking a step down the road toward separation. You should stop relying on your online “friend” and start talking to your partner again. Today’s world revolves around electronic media. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that flirting online is any more acceptable than flirting with someone at the grocery store. Cyber cheating is simply that... cheating.

Book and Author Reviews

To borrow a line from the Beatles, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Last month, my fellow reader, Diane, gave me some books to read which she thought I might enjoy. I confess that they were not books I ordinarily would have chosen. Cautiously, I gave them a try. It was a pretty good experience.

By Nancy Ryan Simply Hers Magazine

These books took me out of my comfort zone. I like lighter reads, ending with a feel-good high (and not a lot of tension on the way to that feel-good high). As an example, in one of the books entitled The ThirteenthTale, the heroine and her father own a rare book store. Although she loves old biographies, her dad is committed to contemporary literature. As she comments on her father’s literary preferences, “He has described in precise, measured words the beautiful desolation he feels at the close of novels where the message is that there is no end to human suffering, only endurance. “ Beautiful desolation? That would not be something I want in my reading world! This, however, is not a tale of beautiful desolation. It is a very descriptive novel, full of mystery and history. It put me in mind of the Bronte sisters’ novels Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, with lots of dark corners, mysterious noises, madness, and finally redemption. Writer Joshilya Jackson writes of spousal abuse in Backstreet Saints. Ro Grande is married to handsome, successful, but abusive Thom. When Ro was six, her mother fled her similarly abusive husband. She believed Ro loved her father more then her, and left her behind. She did not realize “daddy dearest” would transfer that abuse to their daughter. Mother and daughter rediscover each other and begin to patch up their relationship as Ro runs from husband Thom’s abuse. As he searches for her, the tale takes a nasty turn. That is far as I will go in this review, so you can’t call me a “spoiler”!

52

Me Before You, written by Jojo Moyes, is a thoughtprovoking look at assisted suicide. Louisa Clark is hired as a companion for wealthy, handsome adventurer Will Traynor, now a paraplegic after a freak accident. Unbeknownst to her, Will has

informed his family he will take his own life in six months. In hiring her, the family hope Louisa’s upbeat nature will help him find a reason to live and discover life can still be fulfilling. She contacts paraplegics online and finds support groups and activities they can still meaningfully participate in. As she tries to instill optimism in him, they fall in love. Again, I will not be a “spoiler” and tell you the ending. Either way you feel about assisted suicide, it will make you think a little deeper about it… Karleen, my golfing buddy, recommended The Race, by Richard North Patterson. For all of you readers of political thrillers, this is one to get your hands on. It is 2004, and the Republican party is looking for a presidential nominee. War hero Corey Grace is one of the contenders, and this story takes us behind the scenes of a ruthless run for the highest office. Lots of intrigue and a controversial romance, too! Lastly, my pen pal from Gettysburg, Pat, told me to pick up The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. This is her memoir, and on a par with The Orphan Train. In other words, excellent! It is a true story about a “deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant family.” The father is a brilliant and charismatic person who teaches the children physics, geology, astrology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when drunk (frequently), he is dishonest and destructive. Their mother is a free-spirited selfish woman, not cut out for childrearing. They are a homeless family. This is a truly remarkable read, and I urge you to pick it up. The author and her siblings are resilient children who, despite their upbringing (or lack thereof), become successful. The author is a contributor on MSNBC, and won the American Library Association Alex Award! And so, as indicated in the beginning of this article, sometimes it is a good thing to get out of your comfort zone and read other type of novels you might not normally choose. I have discovered a few new authors who I will bring home with me on my next trip to the library. See you there!

Aging with attitude

Advice for aging athletes

Retired professional athletes often speak about the difficult moment when they knew it was time to retire from professional competition. The transition can be easy for some but far more difficult for others. But aging amateur athletes know you need not be a professional to realize there comes a time when your body is telling you it’s time to ease up. Athletes are used to pushing themselves and stretching their limits, but some limits are best not pushed. Such is the case with the limits posed by aging. While athletes don’t have to completely fold up shop and hang up their cleats, tennis shoes or other athletic equipment as they approach senior citizen status, there are steps aging athletes can take to ensure they aren’t pushing their bodies too far as they grow older. Recognize your new recovery time. Veteran athletes tend to have a sixth sense about their bodies, knowing how long they need to recover from common ailments like ankle sprains, knee pain, back pain and shin splints. Despite the body’s remarkable ability for recovery, it’s not immune to aging, and that recovery time will increase as the body ages. Returning too quickly from an injury can only make things worse for aging athletes, so don’t push yourself. Take more time to warm up. As the body ages, its response time to exercise increases. This means the body needs more time to prepare itself for cardiovascular and strength training exercises. Increase your warmup time as you age, gradually increasing the intensity of your warmup exercises until your body feels ready for more strenuous exercise. 56

Focus on flexibility. The more flexible you are, the more capable the body is of absorbing shock, including the shock that results from repetitive activities. But as the body ages, it becomes less flexible, which makes it less capable of successfully handling the repetitive movements common to exercise. Aging athletes should focus on their flexibility, stretching their muscles before and after a workout. In addition, activities such as yoga can work wonders on improving flexibility for young and aging athletes alike. Don’t stop strength training. Some aging athletes mistakenly feel they should stop strength training as they get older. No longer concerned about building muscle, aging athletes might feel as if they have nothing to gain by lifting weights and continuing to perform other muscle strengthening exercises. But the body gradually loses muscle mass as it ages, and that loss puts the joints under greater stress when aging athletes perform other exercises. That stress can put people at greater risk for arthritis, tendinitis and ligament sprains. While you no longer need to max out on the bench press or challenge yourself on the biceps curl, it is important to continue to make strength training a part of your fitness regimen as you age. Aging athletes need not associate aging with ceasing their athletic pursuits. But recognizing your limitations and the changes your body is going through is an important element of staying healthy as you approach older adulthood

life is the berries -

The 48 Hour Challenge!

By Laura Loveberry Inspirational Speaker and Author

Can you go 48 hours and talk nice the entire time? This is my challenge to myself and to all readers of Simply Hers. Now, not only are you encouraged to speak kind, but also keep your tone, volume, facial expressions and body language thoughtful as well. No eye rolls. No sighs. No mean glares. Experts say words are only 7% of the way we communicate, and 93% of communication is the nonverbal cues we use to express ourselves. As an interpreter for deaf friends, I understand the difference in a word’s meaning can be totally changed by my facial expression. So can we communicate with respect and kindness for 48 hours straight? I don’t know about you, but I may need a “start over” moment or two when attempting this goal. We can just say, “start again” when trying to go 48 hours straight without being rude, offensive, or negative in tone. This could be a life-altering experiment for us, especially in marriage. Some couples are patient and understanding and speak respectfully to each other most of the time. Rarely do you ever hear a snide remark. We enjoy their company. Other couples constantly rail on each other. Comments can be cutting, snippy, and bad mannered with underlying digs. Some bicker 50 to 70 years of their life together. Is that a tragedy or what? Well, how about we heed some Godly advice found in the NIV Bible in Ephesians 4:29, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Keeping this Godly inspired advice has the potential to improve our marriage and relationships drastically. And don’t forget, we can always call, “start over” when we fail before the 48 hours is up.

60

My husband Mark and I want to be a couple who is bonding and affirming to each other all day long. On occasion I perhaps have come off bossy in my wording and tone. When you are an art teacher like me in a classroom with 35 students painting all at once, it is easy to develop

a firm or harsh tone at clean up time lest everything turns to ciaos. Because of larger classroom sizes, I need to make a conscious effort to word and speak with kindness and gentleness while herding my classroom as we put away the mess. The same goes for my sometimes-tooassertive-sounding requests I make with my husband. Time is limited and we are often in a rush to accomplish all expected of us, so we need to choose to give our mind a brief moment to think through the best possible way to word our words. Along with this, we can make sure our body language does not put others off as well. So here is the plan: we are challenged to go 48 hours with only kind speaking comments and communication. After we make it 48 hours, then we will go another 48, and another 48, and on and on we go with our respectful and kind talking. Before we know it, we will have developed a positive mindset manner and an effective speaking habit with potential to last our lifetime. This will improve our quality of life, and make our Jesus light shine. From the heart overflows the mouth. To keep our new goal, remember the lyrics of the old song, “They’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love. Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.” You got this. Don’t be a scareD-cat. (Oops! Evidently I used ill mannered and slightly condescending wordage there.) “Start Again.” Let me rephrase this as, “Please do not fear. You have the courage of a lion to try your best for 48 hours of speaking kind.” This two-day challenge includes behind the wheel in heavy traffic, when typing on Facebook, when resolving differences of opinions, when discussing curfew with an eye-rolling teenager, when the coupon lady is loaded up in front of you while the cashier is slow and you are in a hurry. Yea…this is not going to be easy. You may need quite a few start over’s. Let us know on Facebook how you are doing. If you choose to accept, the official challenge is, “Can you go 48 hours and speak nice the entire time?”

I am for the child whose name no one can remember.

It’s a profitable question that we all need to resolve. Is God your Father? Do you have the assurance of His love? If you are either questioning His love for you or have never even known the love of God: Please join me in a 4-week Bible Study for Women. The study is free and easy to understand! Won’t you come join us? I look forward to hearing from you!

I am for the child who has attended eight schools in four years. Because she’s in foster care. Because her birth mother, debilitated by mental illness, neglected her. That is the child I am for. And because I am, she will be half as likely to languish in foster care, and that much more likely to find a safe, permanent home. I am a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.

Everything you need to know about

Vestibular & balance rehab Stephanie Ray, PT, DPT FACILITY MANAgER HILLSDALE

Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers’ Vestibular & Balance Rehabilitation Program involves a comprehensive evaluation and individualized treatment approach for patients suffering from dizziness and imbalance. This type of rehabilitation focuses on problems originating from the vestibule of the inner ear. The vestibule, along with vision and sensation, are the three systems used to maintain balance. When problems occur in one or more of these systems, it can result in dizziness or imbalance.

What is vertigo?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by brief episodes of lightheadedness, nausea, imbalance, instability or dizziness, typically provoked by a quick change in head position with respect to gravity.

What can cause positional vertigo?

There are many causes of vertigo. Head trauma, a sinus infection, neck pain, and degenerative changes due to aging are all potential causes. It is also very common to experience these symptoms without warning.

In my experience, most of my patients have noticed symptoms when they first get out of bed, roll from side to side in bed, look up in the shower and/or bend forward to pick an object off the floor.

My doctor said there are rocks in my ears? Are they supposed to be there?

Yes! These rocks are called otoconia. Briefly, they let us know our direction of acceleration – think, for example, of riding in a car (forward/ backward) or riding an elevator (up/down). If these “rocks” find their way to the inner ear canals, you will likely experience vertigo with head movements or changes in body position.

How old is the average person who gets vertigo?

The average patient that I treat is approximately 60 years old, but I most commonly treat women ranging from 40-80 years. However, I have even treated patients as young as high school age.

What can I expect for my evaluation?

Your therapist will perform a comprehensive evaluation, including, but not limited to: an extensive history of the onset of your symptoms, identification of risk factors, balance and coordination testing, a fall risk assessment, gait and stance evaluation, eye-head coordination testing, positional assessment and review of medical and medication history.

We’d love to work with you in achieving an active lifestyle!

What will treatment likely include?

Treatment may include canalith repositioning maneuvers, habituation exercises, balance and gait training, gaze stability exercises, suggestions for environmental and home modifications and/or manual therapy to cervical spine and paravertebral musculature. It is possible that a repositioning maneuver can resolve all symptoms in only ONE visit!

What is the success rate of Physical Therapy treatment?

Clinical experience shows that vestibular rehabilitation has a success rate as high as 90 percent.

It sounds like what I’m experiencing is vertigo, what’s my next step?

In order to receive physical therapy, state law and your insurance company require a prescription from a physician. Like a prescription for a medication, you choose which pharmacy fills it. Physical Therapy works the same way. Your prescription allows you to choose and attend the provider with which you’re most comfortable and familiar. So if there are any physical therapy needs for you or your family, be sure to consider Accelerated as your first choice.

How do I schedule an appointment?

Please have your prescription and insurance card available when you call. We verify insurance benefits and provide an estimate of coverage for every patient. If you do not have a written prescription, your physician’s office can fax over one or call any of our offices.

Take a Pure Michigan Fall Color Tour Falls is a special time in Michigan as the contrast between the vibrant colors of changing trees plays off green evergreens and sparkling blue waters. With Michigan’s abundant forestland, nearly every region of the state offers a colorful display of trees this time of year. Whether you’re driving down the highway, hiking along one of Michigan’s numerous trails, or kayaking streams and river, the opportunities to take part in a Michigan color tour are boundless. With its endless forests, the western Upper Peninsula has some of the most stunning displays of fall colors in the state. Falls color tours can include stops at Bond, Agate, and Manido Falls waterfalls, Presque Isle and Ontonagon Rivers and the Historic Old Victoria Village. Hike through Porcupine Mountain State Park and be sure to experience Lake of the Clouds for a remarkable view. Plan routes along MI-45, Route 64, M-519 and M-2. If you have extra time, be sure to check out the Brockway Mountain Drive off of MI-26 for one of Michigan’s top fall color drives. Michigan’s largest chain of rivers and lakes rests at the Inland Waterway at the tip of the Lower Peninsula between Little Traverse Bay and the Hammond Bay. Along these banks are miles of brilliantly colored forests for hiking, biking, driving, or even kayaking. Mustsee sites include the Tunnel of Trees Scenic Heritage Route, Pigeon River State Park, Black Mountain pathway, Ocqueoc Falls and the Presque Isle Lighthouses on the coast of Lake Huron. Elk Viewing at Thunder Bay River State Forest is a fall favorite. Plan routes along M-119, Route 68, C-58, M-211, Black Mountain Road and MI-23

The M-22 region is home to two of Michigan’s most popular destinations – Traverse City and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, including Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive Multiple vineyards are tucked along way and the sparkling waters of the area offer a stunning contrast to fiery fall hues. Plan routes along M-22, M-115 and Benzie Highway. Many people think beach towns when they think of the Lake Michigan coastline, but the region is also a mecca for fall color. Hike or bike through the Grand Haven State Park or Yankee Springs State Recreation Area, observe art with the fall colors as a backdrop at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and pick your own apples at Gull Meadows Farms. Coopersville offers a family-fun antique train ride through the colorful woods, and Bells and Founders breweries and Fenn Valley Vineyards offer the perfect place for refreshments. Plan routes along M-179, M-611, M-89 and the scenic Blue Star Highway. Southeast Michigan is a fusion of happening cities and rural towns. Experience the changing colors on foot at Kensington Metropolitan Park or Waterloo State Recreation area, view exotic plants and flowers at the University of Michigan botanical garden and Nichols Arboretum, or travel through the woods on the Southern Michigan Railroad in Tecumseh. The Irish Hills area offers an eight mile collection of popular scenic routes, and Huron River Drive delivers abundant views. Plan routes along MI-12, M-36, M-52, and Wolf Lake Road. Trend Treasures is for your

It can be hard to keep up with the latest changes in decorating styles for the home. But the latest trend might actually make it easy for you to have a stylish house, especially if you’ve kept some family treasures around. Mixing traditional and contemporary decor within a home can give your spaces a warm, yet up-to-date, feel. Keeping those traditional accents, furniture pieces or even wallpaper in your home and blending them with contemporary elements that have clean lines or bright colors can create a relaxed and attention-grabbing look. You can incorporate this style in any room of the home, and it allows you to display that mirror your grandma had in her bathroom, or to bring new life and energy to the aged marble countertops in your kitchen. 62

Try these tips to help get the most out the old, while bringing a new look to your home:

*Accent with white – One great way to give a room a contemporary balance is to accent with white. The trim, molding, doors and even decorative linens you use can bring new energy to a furniture item or heirloom piece you’ve had in your family for years. Blending the soft wood tones of older furniture or dark wood floors with cool and fresh white accents will make the room vibrant. If it’s your kitchen that’s sporting the contemporary white color, add Danze faucets in stainless steel finishes that showcase a more traditional décor to balance the overall feel. *

garage. No more! Haul out that old wagon and make it into a decorative holder for your collection of container gardens. A fresh coat of paint will spruce up your wagon, adding a classic, rustic element to your patio.

Incorporate a couple focal pieces – If the shell of your room has a contemporary look, adding a few traditional elements and conversation pieces into the room can create a stunning look. An antique lamp, an old trunk that becomes a side table or a church pew in an entryway can all be attention-getting additions. On the flipside, if your home features traditional wooden floors that have aged beautifully, let the floor take center stage with simple, modern decorations. *Add little touches – An old six-paned window with cracked and worn wood can become a frame for family photos. Wood from an old barn can be used for a coffee table or fireplace mantel. Mix up the chairs around your dining room table by blending both modern and contemporary styles. These little changes in a room’s decor might not be immediately obvious, but as visitors look around the room, they’ll notice the special touches you’ve made by mixing two distinctive styles. *

Mixing old and new is a decorating trend in today’s home decor, and there are benefits galore to exploring its flavor. You’ll have a beautiful home today, with flexibility to alter it in the years to come. If, in five years, you decide going contemporary is the path for you, simply switch out that bronze faucet with chrome or replace the antique accent pieces in the living room. Regardless of the way you mix traditional and contemporary elements, you can be assured that it won’t overwhelm your guests. Instead, they’ll enjoy experiencing your creativity and the breath of fresh air you brought to your home

Use Charming Accents

Almost everyone had a wagon they grew up with. But as we grew older, wagons became clutter in the shed or 67

Home offices in tight spaces

A

home office is a necessity for many adults these days. While some people have entire rooms available to house a home office, others have to make do with less space, and that can mean fitting an office into a tight space. The first step in establishing a small home office is figuring out the space you have and any limitations that may accompany it. For example, maybe you have an unused corner in the living room but don’t want to have wires and equipment out in the open. An 68

armoire-type desk that can be closed when not in use is a viable option in such a situation. Perhaps there is an unused closet in a bedroom. A wall-mounted desk surface, such as a piece of custom-cut countertop material, complete with foldaway mouse and keyboard tray can easily turn the space into a compact nook. Maybe there is an entryway with a small table that would be large enough for a laptop. A stool or ottoman that can be tucked under it can serve as a desk chair and extra seating for company

Beef and Butternut Squash Stew 3 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 2 pounds stew beef, cut into 2-inch cubes 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup Marsala wine 1 pound butternut squash, cut into 2-inch cubes 1/4 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes 3 to 4 cups beef broth 2 tablespoons fresh chopped flat-leaf parsley Crusty bread, for serving

In a large soup pot heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, rosemary, and thyme and saute until the onions are tender, about 2 minutes. Toss the beef cubes in salt and pepper and flour. Turn up the heat to med-high and add the beef to the pot. Cook until the beef is browned and golden around the edges, about 5 minutes. Add the Marsala wine. Using a wooden spoon, gently stir up all the brown bits off the bottom of the pan. Add the butternut squash and sun-dried tomatoes and stir to combine.

Recipe found at foodnetwork.com

Add enough beef broth to just cover the beef and squash. Bring the stew to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Season the stew with additional salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley. Serve with crusty bread alongside.

Poison Toffee Apples for Halloween Ingredients: 2 cups granulated sugar ¾ cups water ½ cup liquid glucose/light corn syrup few drops black gel food colouring 6 Granny Smith apples (or 12 small apples) Directions: 1. Grease a piece of baking paper and place on a tray/baking sheet. 2. Insert bamboo skewers in all the apples and set aside. 3. In a medium pot, combine the sugar, water, glucose/corn syrup and food colouring and stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture feels smooth when you rub it between your fingers. 4. Allow the caramel to boil until it reaches the hard crack stage (150°c/310°F).
