Students Volunteer in and Around Boston During Annual Day of Service First-year students took part in their inaugural Emmanuel volunteer experience during the College’s 15th Annual Day of Service on September 7th. Nearly 430 students participated in the tradition, volunteering their time to Greater Boston area nonprofit organizations throughout the day for a total of 1,724 hours of service. Students spent time among 10 different service sites, which included the Franklin Park Zoo, the Greater Boston Food Bank, Community Servings, Cradles to Crayons, Muddy River Clean-Up, Marian Manor, St. Ambrose Family Shelter, St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Roxbury, Mission Grammar School, and the newly added site of ReVision Urban Farm, a small garden in Boston that provides fresh, affordable, locally grown produce to families in the city

“Serving the community is an important part of Emmanuel’s culture and tradition,” said Associate Director of Community Service and Service Learning Deirdre BradleyTurner. “Inviting new students to take part in a service event during Welcome Week is a wonderful way to welcome students to Emmanuel. It is an opportunity for new students to get involved, meet other students and see and serve one of Boston’s many neighborhoods.” ReVision Urban Farm was a new service site for the Annual Day of Service this year.

with limited incomes and transportation access. The Annual Day of Service introduced new students to some of the volunteer opportunities available to them at

Emmanuel and throughout Boston. The day also allowed for new students to get to know one another and bond with their new classmates through service.

In addition to the Day of Service, the College also held the annual Volunteer Fair on September 15th. The fair featured various organizations throughout the Greater Boston area. Students made connections with representatives from each organization and chose volunteer opportunities that proved the best fit for them.

Art Therapy Students, Faculty, Alum Volunteer at MFA Event for Military Families Emmanuel College Special Instructor of Art Emily Parsons, students Brittany Jordan ’11, Christine Aufiero ’11, Michaela Alexander ’11, and alumna Jennifer Walsh ’08 volunteered at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s (MFA) special event “Artist for a Day” on August 28th in an effort to reach out to families of U.S. armed forces service members. The event was in conjunction with the MFA’s Artful Adventures Program, which provides opportunities for children ages three and older to connect with art and culture through engagement with the museum’s collections, combining gallery exploration with an art-making activity. As part of the art activity, the Emmanuel volunteers guided children through the creative process, using the art lesson as a means of teaching participants how to communicate ideas and emotions through art. Children were provided sketchbooks to take

“Making art is relaxing and enjoyable, which in itself is therapeutic,” said Parsons, who herself has loved ones in the service. “This was a fun, low-key day for these families. Always having that feeling of uncertainty hanging over their heads makes it even more important for these families to have an outlet for expression and have an opportunity to enjoy some time together.”

Emmanuel News NOVEMBER 2010

Emmanuel News is printed on recycled paper.

Although Anna Mary Bigelow Thompson was unable to attend her 75th class reunion in 2007, she was happy to visit the campus a year prior during registration week, and was so impressed with the expansion of the campus and the friendly students. Anna continues to enjoy the many cultural activities in Pittsburgh, Pa., attending concerts and gallery openings. She fondly remembers the wonderful years at Emmanuel College.

2010-2011 Marks College’s Largest Undergraduate Enrollment in History This fall, Emmanuel welcomed the largest undergraduate enrollment in its 91-year history. Enrollment has more than tripled from 528 undergraduates in 2000 to 1,750 now currently enrolled for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Since the College became a coeducational four-year college in the fall of 2001, applications have risen dramatically as have our academic standards, making Emmanuel a school of first choice for an increasing number of high school graduates.

Emmanuel Squad Performs Well at Boston Area Model UN Conference Emmanuel College’s Model UN team had a great showing at the Boston Area Model UN (BarMUN) Conference during the weekend of September 30th-October 3rd, hosted by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. Three students won awards at the conclusion of the weekend-long conference; Jason Young ’12, Adam Campbell ’13 and Alec Simonette ’14. Along with winning Honorable Delegate for New France, Simonette also won the Lufthansa raffle, which includes a free trip to anywhere in Europe. The BarMUN Conference is a collegiate conference hosted each October by Boston University’s International Affairs Association. It

is a multi-disciplined, fast paced, and interactive simulation involving over 200 collegiate delegates and 100 staff members. “[It] is a great starting event for the members of the club, especially new members because of the smaller committee sizes, which allow more participation and hands-on experience in resolutions,” said Young. Additional Emmanuel participants included: Andrew Moyseowicz ’11, Micha Maalouf ’11, Nora Cashell ’14, Angela Anthony ’14, Andrew Young ’13, Jack Davidson ’14, Tim O’Sullivan ’14, Cesar Zayas ’14 and Chris Fitzpatrick ’13.

We have been pleased to hear from some of our classmates, both near and far. Therese Senecal Bernique (Saintes, France) continues to visit her favorite Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela. Martina Gugger Bursik (Faribault, Minn) has welcomed her seventh great-grandchild!

The class lost a dear and treasured friend when Father Joseph McGlone died unexpectedly last fall. Father said Mass several times for ’35 at 33 Hancock St. He was one of us!

With help from the College, I finally was able to reach Agnes Hanrahan Sweeney through her daughter, Anne Sweeney. I was thrilled to have Agnes call me. We had a long conversation recalling classmates and professors of our college days. Agnes was another of our Boston schoolteachers and is now living in Boston.

We offer our condolences to the family of Barbara McNamara, who passed away on March 26th, 2009; M. Rita Fougere Manocchio, who went to God on October 2, 2008, and had moved permanently to Tempe, Ariz., in 1994; and Helen McEttrick Cogan, who died on November 23, 2008. May they rest in God’s love.

The late Martha Doherty Mooney’s daughter, Martha “Markey” Mooney Waltien ’70 and her husband Al Waltien, came for the long reunion weekend from Long Island, N.Y., and picked me up to go to Sister Janet’s gala on Thursday night. And it was indeed a gala...in a glass house on campus!

I am finally finishing my book about World War II and seeking a publisher. It has taken too long! Too many distractions, like...going aboard the USS Constitution when she got underway on August 27th. Present were over 100 Navy chief selectees, chosen throughout the country to complete their qualifying on Old Ironsides. I watched them climb the masts to the top...and come down...including women! And listened to them sing “Anchors Aweigh” as I have never heard it sung before. It was spectacular! Being there was certainly a great privilege for this alumna of ’35.

Our class numerals led the procession into the Saturday evening liturgy on Alumni Weekend. I was sad to walk alone but glad to have 1935 represented. While waiting for the line to form, I visited with the late Mary O’Brien Donahue’s daughter, Jane Donahue Eberwein ’65, and her husband Bob. They come to every reunion from Birmingham, Mich., where the Doctors Eberwein are professors at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.

I had wonderful telephone conversations with classmates Dorothea Hoar at Eventide in Quincy, Mass., and with Sister Elisabeth McNamara at Holy Child Convent in Rye, N.Y.

Mary Leonard Murray and her daughter worked with members of the library staff to find a copy of the book “Logic and Epistemology” by Father Cotter. The library lent her the original copy she used when she was a student at the College, which she returned with a lovely note thanking the staff: “It (the book) has been revised several times since Fr. Cotter first wrote it, but it is still full of wisdom…your staff has been extremely helpful and courteous in making this available for me.”

Barbara A. Raftery 151 Wolcott Road Chestnut Hill, MA 02467-3132 Congratulations to Charlotte Smith, who received the highly respected Cheverus Award from Cardinal O’Malley at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on November 22, 2009. The award, with its medal that bears the image of Bishop Cheverus, was established in 2008. Charlotte was one of 133 recipients who received the medal on the feast of Christ the King. The Pilot described the recipients as “those who quietly and humbly build Christ’s kingdom in this world” (11/27/09 issue). Charlotte has been a Eucharistic Minister for many years, and currently makes 10 plus communion calls weekly to private homes, and monthly to three nursing homes. She has been active in her parish as a member of the Legion of Mary, as a supporter of its monthly drawing, and as a money counter. Charlotte has also participated in pro-life efforts. Most notably, she has been in charge of the sale of carnations at her parish on Mothers’ Day weekend for 23 years. This event benefits Framingham Birthright. In addition to her Church-related commitments, Charlotte helps ensure that the Council on Aging newsletters

Sister Mary E. Ward, FMM (formerly Sister Mary of St. Edmund of Canterbury) is currently in the Cherry Hill Nursing Home in North Providence, R.I. She continues her ministry there by arranging prayer services for the other residents. If you would like to send a card to Sister Mary, please address it to her at 399 Fruit Hill Avenue, North Providence, RI 02911-2842. The Sisters will ensure that she receives the mail. Sister Mary had a long teaching career, including assignments in Liberia and Ghana in West Africa as well as the United States. It is with sadness that we report the death of our classmate: Noreen Kane McCarthy. We wish to extend our sincere condolences to her family. We also wish to extend our sympathies to classmates who recently lost their husbands: Eleanor Kilduff Howard (husband, John); Carol McInnis White (husband, Brendan); and Marian Connor (husband, Bill Schreiber). We were so sorry to learn that Charles Kraus Jr., the eldest son of Agatha Sicari Kraus and her husband Chuck, died unexpectedly in October 2009, leaving his wife and two daughters. My sincere thanks to Kay Fennessy McGill for her frequent help with these class notes. Kay is enjoying some exciting travel experiences and would like to hear from anyone interested in joining her. Please write! We look forward to hearing your news!!!

Although Kathy Fairbanks has not pursued any recent travel, she keeps herself very busy. Kathy continues as the volunteer librarian at the Archeological Society. Kathy is still involved in the soon-to-be-completed translation (from French) of the works of Charles de Foucauld. Marie Deignan Dempsey is expecting her 14th grandchild, joining nine girls and four boys. This happy group spends much of their summer visiting Marie at the Cape. Marie reports that “along with Bob’s two children and two grandchildren, there are lots of festive occasions.” Marie, who never seems to lose her get-up-and-go, continues to travel, especially to the Bahamas as well as playing golf frequently. Marie is currently involved in a very intense bridge course. Our ’55 lunch group continues and we hope to see as many of our classmates as possible joining us. If you would like to receive future notifications please contact Ann Kelley Ryan. The 55th Anniversary Reunion was enjoyed tremendously by the enthusiastic (if modest) number attending. Rosemary Donohue Reiss and her husband Paul and Marguerite Donlon Boucher and her husband John traveled from New York and New Jersey, respectively, to attend. All attending were in awe of the vibrant Emmanuel campus. Elizabeth “Betty” Marley passed away on December 30, 2009.

If nearly all of our 16,000 alumni donated, Emmanuel could fund a student’s financial aid package, student life experience, and residence accommodations for all four years. Giving to the Annual Fund is also a vote of pride and confidence, and publications such as U.S. News and World Reports often analyze alumni giving rates when calculating rankings – rankings that can increase the value of your degree.

By day, Barbara Curtin Graceffa creates web pages for UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. After hours, she uses her design talents in other ways -- she owns and operates a part-time interior decorating business, “Secretary of the Interior.” Her latest client is the Boston Marathon. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA), the folks who put on the Boston Marathon, has commissioned Barbara to make two commemorative quilts celebrating their sister marathon in Ohme, Japan. In 1966, when Japanese-U.S. relations were

still strained following WWII, an Englishspeaking Japanese reporter reached out to the organizers of the Boston Marathon offering to sponsor two U.S. athletes to travel to Japan to run in the Ohme race. Not only did the BAA accept their offer but they also agreed to sponsor two Japanese marathoners in Boston. Forty-four years later, the reciprocal relationship continues; a delegation of Japanese reporters and officials from the Ohme race were in Boston again in April 2010 to cheer on their runners in the Boston Marathon and a representative from each group was given a quilt designed and sewed by Barbara. The quilts incorporate sport shorts, T-shirts, silk marathon ties and embroidered patches from both races as well as Japanese fabrics from table linens, handkerchiefs, and batiks previously gifted to members of the board of directors of the Boston Athletic Association. Each patchwork wall-hanging is approximately 36x72 inches in size. Barbara has won blue ribbons for her quilts in the past and is honored to be associated with this international gift of goodwill. The quilts were presented to the Japanese during a private ceremony during marathon weekend in April. It is expected that at least one of the quilts will hang in the City Hall in Ohme.

Iraq. While serving in Iraq, he was honored for his service with a Bronze Star medal, one of the highest military awards that a U.S. military soldier can receive. This award is based on individual actions during a soldier’s tour. “I don’t care about the awards. I just care about saving lives,” said CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

Sister Janet Eisner, SND informed the audience about the history of convocations, which serve to remind colleges of their missions at the start of the academic year. She said that Emmanuel has stayed true to its mission “to educate students in a dynamic learning community rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and shaped by strong ethical values and a Catholic intellectual tradition,” since the earliest years of the College. Sister Janet continued by recognizing the Emmanuel students, class by class. She encouraged members of the senior class to continue making Boston their extended classroom, juniors to continue experiencing the real world through internships, study abroad and community service, the sophomore class representatives to remain focused as they declare their allegiance to a particular area of study, and the freshmen to begin to make an imprint on Emmanuel. “When you first came to Emmanuel

“Growing up, I always wanted to be an officer and a gentleman,” said Kyere about joining the U.S. Army. “I have cousins that are in the military and I asked them about their experiences. After I talked to them and thought about it more, I knew that joining the military was something that I wanted to do.”

in 2007 you planned to make Boston your extended classroom,” Sister Janet said to the senior class. “You still have your senior year to fulfill those plans. Have you been to the Museum of Fine Arts lately? The Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum? The Boston Symphony? This year may you appreciate even more the Emmanuel education with a program that builds both character and career.” Murphy began her remarks by reminiscing of the days when she was “just a little girl with big ideas” in her college years. Those big ideas were what led her on the road to her career as a filmmaker. Murphy explained that prior to becoming a filmmaker she worked as a journalist and was often upset by how much information she was forced to leave out of each story. She began her own production company where she could make documentaries to tell the stories of people around the world. “Almost every unnerving thing that could possibly happen to you when

traveling has happened to me, but taking the rough road has truly been a small price to pay to get to meet the people I met along the way,” Murphy said of her travels while shooting documentaries. “People who want to make life easier for others who have drawn the ‘proverbial short straw’ in life.” Murphy explained that success in life and following your dreams is all about taking small steps toward what we believe. She referenced the summer reading selection, Three Cups of Tea, acknowledging one man’s ability to make a huge difference. “Never underestimate how much you continue to not know,” she said. “While we all still have so much to learn, we also have so much to do. If you want to make a difference today, you already have the power to do that.” Murphy told the story of the two women featured in her documentary “Beyond Belief.” She explained that

the hardships of being a widow in Afghanistan are unimaginably worse than that of being a widow in the United States, which is why the two women who lost their husbands in the attacks on September 11th created a foundation to help. The foundation gives Afghan widows the basic tools needed to achieve a measure of independence and care for themselves and their children. She closed her remarks by reminding students to take advantage of the opportunity they have at their fingertips to get a great college education. Murphy emphasized that the education the students have and will continue to receive at Emmanuel is something that other people in the world only dream of, especially those Afghan widows fighting for an education for their own children. “Despite their differences,” Murphy said of the Afghan widows, “we all have the same basis for our big ideas; security, health, happiness and education.”
