A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

s I start my eighth and last year as President of this great institution, I remain as excited, energetic, and determined as I was when I first arrived. It gives me great pleasure to report yet another successful year for Webb on many levels. Student quality remains high around here, as does student success. For the first time in my seven years at Webb, we had no failures from the spring semester and thus no associated remediation. Indeed, the students energize this place with their enthusiasm and dedication to their work and to student life: just pay a visit during the week and you can’t help but feel it. There’s an excitement in the air—and to attend senior thesis presentations or junior design presentations is to see firsthand the quality and creativity in the thinking and communication skills being developed here at Webb. Even the buzz at lunch—laughing, talking, kidding around—is loud and cheerful. A few things have changed. During the last fiscal year, and the first couple of months of this one, we have had to replace eight faculty and staff members, which is quite a large amount of turnover for Webb. We finalized a replacement for Andrew Berko on August 27th; all the new hires are excited about joining our team, and we’re confident that they are excellent additions to the team here at Webb. We experienced two sad losses as well: Bill Blanton ’71 and Keith Dixon P’11. Bill was a very active and productive trustee and a good friend; Keith was an involved and productive parent and friend who was very generous with his time, restarting the Parents Association which has added significant value to our program. Both men were generous contributors, as well, and we all miss them very much. Our Southampton exchange program continues with great success. We had four Southampton students on board last semester, and they were an excellent group, adding diversity of thought and inspiring a fuller understanding of the world around us. They also added four big smiles to the Alumni Association ranks. This year’s Student Organization Leadership promises to be an excellent group eager to learn, act, and make improvements. Rick Paradis, our still-new Director of Development, is moving along assertively and developing a foundation for a prolonged period of major gift activity. Rick Neilson is in his second year as Dean; he is enjoying himself in the classroom and is full of great ideas, energy, and a wonderful sense of humor. The Board is moving along as they develop plans to finish work on a new strategic plan, and its Search Committee is well along in finding a new President. It will be a good year. Thank you all again for your support of Webb and its students.

A DNA All Our Own…

person can find a sense of the model for higher education in America by perusing the internet. One college offers hundreds of different majors. Another boasts twenty Nobel laureates on its faculty. Still another highlights the massive research dollars it gleans from government sources. Some colleges tout their nationally ranked football teams, while others their annual participation in March Madness. And Webb? Webb doesn’t meet any of these “standards” for higher education. At Webb we do things differently. We have always done things differently. No apologies here. What do we offer our students? • A highly capable faculty dedicated to the teaching of undergraduates and to spending extensive time outside of the classroom mentoring their students. • 100% full tuition scholarships—a legacy nearly 125 years strong, unmatched by any other college of engineering in America. • A top-rated engineering education focused on naval architecture and marine engineering. We have concentrated on what we know best and have done it well for almost 125 years. • A work program integrated into the academic program, introducing our students to the breadth of the marine industries while providing steadily increasing responsibilities over four years. • A degree for four years and a choice of jobs or graduate programs. • An undergraduate degree unencumbered by massive debt. They can take a great paying job in the petrochemical industry, or they can chase their dreams designing yachts or offshore wind farms. It’s up to them and they are not dictated by the need to pay back loans. • An atmosphere of mutual respect. A culture that cultivates a desire to give back, helping to insure that William Webb’s legacy will endure for future generations.

At Webb, you will not find 200 students crammed into a single classroom, nor will you find a TA teaching classes. We have 11 full-time faculty and five adjunct professors, each one with a commitment to teaching. We have a different formula and it works for us. Can we be better? Sure. It’s no time for complacency. We remain committed to further reducing the endowment draw rate. We must keep pace with the changing technologies in the maritime and offshore industries. We can do more to foster creativity and curiosity and hone leadership skills in our students. New technologies such as online learning need to be applied where appropriate. These are our challenges. The board, faculty and administration are aware of the need to embrace change, as well as the importance of retaining focus on the core values that have made Webb so unique and special. I would like to conclude my remarks by thanking two constituencies that make Webb Institute possible. First, I would like to thank all of you—the alumni and friends of Webb that give so willingly and generously. We could not maintain our standards of excellence without your support. Secondly, I would like to extend a special thanks to the many non-alumni who serve on Webb’s Board of Trustees. For alumni, serving on the Board is a natural extension of our time at Webb. A chance to give a little something back. But I am in awe of the time and financial resources offered to Webb by those who did not directly benefit from a Webb education. The names of these folks are listed on the preceding page. Should you meet some of our non-alumni trustees, please take time to thank them for all they do for Webb. W E B B I E S C E L E B R AT E REUNION WITH GENEROSITY This past June, the Class of 1962 celebrated their 50th anniversary, and they have designated a portion of their gift to make a restroom wheechair accessible in Stevenson Taylor Hall. The 35th Reunion Class of 1977 designated their class gift to purchase new bleachers for the athletic field; and in honor of their 30th anniversary, the Class of 1982 has designated their gift to waterfront improvements. One very special Reunion gift was made by Norm Wallin PG’62 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his graduation from the Graduate School at Webb Institute. Norm and his wife Kitty have provided funds to establish The Webb Cultural Enrichment Endowment Fund, which will enable Webb students to avail themselves of the culture that New York City has to offer. he Webb Alumni Fund (WAF) posted another record year in 2011–12, with annual fund contributions totaling $1,177,555—a 4% increase over the previous year. The average personal gift increased to $1,337 (up 3%), the average total gift (including matching) increased to $1,578 (up 7.6%), and the median gift increased to $550 (up 10%). This year 311 alumni (42% of alumni donors) were members of the William H. Webb (WHW) Society, having contributed at least $1,000. Leading the way to the record level of WAF contributions in 2011–12 were Norm Wallin PG’62 and his wife Kitty, with a $50,000 endowment to provide student access to the arts in Manhattan, and the Class of ’62 with an unrestricted gift of $72,000 over-and-above their regular annual contribution to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation from Webb. Now that’s a 50th anniversary gift! Not included in the “annual fund” numbers above are a special gift of $1 million from Al Zeien ’52 and his wife Joyce to endow a full-tuition scholarship for a Webb student in perpetuity, and the proceeds of “planned gifts” made by three Webb alums now deceased. Webb realized $630,000 in “planned gifts” from the estates of Allen Hoyt ’36, Michael Costagliola ’42, and Edward Ganly ’36. As members of the Webb Heritage Society, they had the foresight to provide for Webb in their estate planning. Total gifts from alumni, living and deceased, in 2011–12 were $2,809,238. Although overall participation slipped to 70%, there were 16 classes that achieved 100% participation: ’40, ’44B, ’45, ’49, ’54, ’61, ’67, ’69, ’70, ’72, ’06, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’11 and ’12. Participation by the seven most recent graduating classes (’06– ’12) was a remarkable 97.1%. Clearly, Webb Institute remains vibrant and relevant as its recent graduates show their respect and affection through their financial support. The second Class Agent Forum (CLAG 2) was held at Webb on October 15, 2011, with 55 alums representing 45 classes from 1950 to 2011. The purpose of the forum was to continue the process of addressing Webb’s financial situation and what alums can and should be doing to help secure Webb’s financial sustainability. The key takeaways from CLAG 2 were then brought directly to alumni through a series of regional meetings held across the country over the next three months. The results of the 2011–12 WAF campaign indicate that the message has been heard loud and clear, and that the alumni are up to the challenge. The success of the Webb Alumni Fund depends on the Board of Trustees’ Development Committee for their leadership and guidance, our outstanding team of Class Agents for their dedication and support, and the Development Office staff for their enthusiasm and hard work. Providing the bright, eager, and deserving students of today and future generations the extraordinary educational opportunity that we all enjoyed is what this hard work is all about. Sincere thanks to the 746 Webb grads, postgraduates and honorary alums identified in the pages of this Annual Report, who make this possible by perpetuating the legacy of William H. Webb.

2011-2012 ALUMNI GIVING BY CL ASS YEAR

Alumni Giving Webb’s Class Agent structure plays a significant role in raising funds for the Webb Alumni Fund, a key component of the Webb Annual Fund. These dedicated alumni devote a large amount of time to connecting, communicating and soliciting funds from former classmates. Webb’s consistently strong alumni participation in the WAF is a direct result of “Class Agent” structure. Their amazing efforts include coordinating fundraising solicitations that generate a substantial amount of funds to Webb’s Annual Fund. The class agents’ efforts are reflected strongly in Webb’s Annual class giving totals and participation rates, and more often than not surpass anticipated goals. We cannot thank them enough for all their hard work and dedication. Their involvement increases Webb’s Alumni giving and ensures the success of our Annual Fund Campaign year after year.

WHY WEBB? W

hen U.S. News and World Report named Webb Institute “America’s Most Loved School” based on its high percentage of alumni giving to the Annual Fund, few Webb insiders were surprised. The camaraderie that exists among most classes is extremely strong, and the shared experience of four years spent in such unique environs forges friendships and professional relationships that last a lifetime. At Homecoming the spirit is palpable, particularly among reunion classes, which gather to celebrate various milestone anniversaries. There is another group of individuals, who are not graduates of Webb’s undergraduate program, but who also demonstrate their dedication to Webb in a variety of ways. When asked, “Why, when so many nonprofit agencies are competing for your philanthropic contributions, do you choose Webb?” Here are some of their answers:

J E A N N E H I L M A R - H A R D Y , a spry, energetic woman of 91 living in Seneca, South Carolina, has the distinction of having been married to and widowed by two Webb alums. Her first husband was Harold O. Hilmar ’40 (pictured, top right). When Hal passed, Jeanne attended school to learn massage therapy at the age of 65. Her second husband, Howard M. Hardy ’38 (pictured, bottom right), passed away in 2009, and was the last living member of his class. She had actually known Howard first, but she was only 18 when he proposed marriage in Brookline, MA, and she declined. He married someone else, but they connected much later in life through his sister, with whom Jeanne had remained friends. Mr. Hardy was an engineer with Cooper-Bessemer of Mt. Vernon, OH, and retired in 1977. Mrs. Hilmar-Hardy has continued to donate to Webb Institute in memory of both of her late husbands. W H Y W E B B ? “Both my husbands received a wonderful education that enabled them to have successful, gratifying careers; that would not have been possible without the vision and generosity of William H. Webb.” She remembers, with great fondness, attending dances at Webb Institute in the 1930s. H O M E R N . “ N O R M ” WA L L I N P G ’ 6 2 , received his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955. He was sent to graduate school at Webb by the Navy. One of five Lieutenant Commanders, Norm was the only bachelor among the group. After resigning from the Navy in 1969, he was offered a reserve commission as a Commander, which he accepted. Following his naval career, Norm was fleet engineer and manager of maintenance and repair for Keystone Shipping Company from 1976–97, manager of ship repair sales for Sun Shipbuilding from 1974–76,

and engineering manager of Harbor Boat Building from 197074. Norm says that the Webb connection was extremely helpful to him in providing post-Navy employment opportunities. He and his wife, Kitty, of San Francisco, have been active members of Webb’s alumni family and generous donors as well. Members of the “Founding” Cumulative Giving Club, the Wallins have been the benefactors of many improvements to the Webb Campus. In 1998 they donated two Laser Class sailboats, and in 2001 they contributed an electronic keyboard. These items are still in use by Webb Students. They sponsored the restoration of the Steinway piano, and the fountain in the Cuneo Courtyard, as well as the China Cabin, one of William H. Webb’s ships. The jewel in the crown of their giving history is the creation of a cultural enrichment endowment to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Norm’s graduation from Webb. W H Y W E B B ? Because as the only single guy in his group, he met, courted and married Kitty, a native Long Islander, and for the three years that he attended Webb’s graduate school, they enjoyed all that New York City had to offer! So current and future Webb students will benefit from Norm and Kitty’s romantic nostalgia.

S U S A N A N D T O M B U R N S P ’ 0 8 have been involved parents since their daughter Lindsey entered Webb. While she was a junior, they generously donated the patio furniture on the rear deck, providing much-needed outdoor accommodations for students to dine and socialize while enjoying the breathtaking view of Long Island Sound. Even though Lindsey is married and living in the U.K., Susan and Tom have continued to support Webb in creative and

constructive ways: Tom’s corporation, Argonauta Marine & Subsea LLC, has sponsored student attendance at the OTC Conference in Houston. In addition, the Burns family has opened their home to OTC attendees and winter work students in the Houston area. (Lindsey herself crossed the pond to join the WooFS for their performance during the salute to Jill and Roger Compton in 2011.) W H Y W E B B ? Tom says his reasons are self-serving. As a consultant to the oil industry and a marine engineer for most of his career, he recognizes the need for exceptional engineers and feels that Webb is a standout in consistently producing them. In addition, he acknowledges that Lindsey and her parents are the beneficiaries of William H. Webb’s largesse. The Burns family is a testament that parental (and alumni) involvement need not cease when a student graduates. D R . I VA N N . K I R S C H N E R ’ 8 1 X is not a Webb graduate, but he’s a member of the Webb Alumni Association— honored that the Alumni Association by-laws allow him to participate as a member of the Class of ‘81X. He has kept in touch with his classmates, other Webb graduates and non-graduating alumni, and remains engaged with Webb Institute on a variety of levels. There are currently seventeen “X” members of the Alumni Association. One of Ivan’s goals is to represent the Alumni Association and bring more nongraduating Webb alumni in. “I trust that there are many non-participating alumni in my situation,” he says, “who believe strongly in the mission of Webb Institute and who would be willing to cast their support for the organization, even though they did not earn the Webb degree.” Ivan represented the Class of ’81 last fall at the Class Agent Leadership Retreat as an invited alternate to his class agent, Erica Hansen. Of the experience, he said: “I was most impressed by the level of dedication of the Webb Alumni Association leadership, and the willingness of the administration to welcome such a forum to brainstorm on ways to advance the mission of William H. Webb in the 21st Century. Also, I think the continued on following page

evolution of student life to include cultural arts with the WooFS singing group, the theater group, the expanded athletic program, and new and broader electives results in an atmosphere that is much less cloistered than the Webb of my day, and would probably have been a better fit for me.” After leaving Webb, Ivan attended the University of Michigan, where he earned his B.S.E. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He worked in the offshore industry for two years, returned to Michigan and received two M.S.E. degrees (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering plus Aerospace Engineering) and his Ph.D. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After graduate school he worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center for more than eight years, performing fundamental research in supercavitation that earned him the ASNE Solberg Award for Research in 1997 and a NAVSEA Engineer of the Year Award in 1998. He has recently co-authored a book on cavitation. The former technical director of strategic programs for Alion Science and Technology (previously Anteon), he joined Applied Physical Sciences Corporation (APS; a corporation founded and headed by a Webb alum, Charles Corrado, profiled below) as principal scientist in 2010. “Working with Webbies is among the best part of my job,” says Ivan. “There are a lot of them around me, so I’m lucky that I enjoy it.” W H Y W E B B ? Ivan noted “how consistently well-prepared Webb graduates are.” Webb has been generating fine engineers from the beginning. Ship technology is pretty complicated, and requires a broad understanding of physics and mathematics. More than pretty much all other graduates, Webbies also know how to stay on task until the job is done. This training makes Webb grads valuable wherever they go—Webb delivers an excellent product!” C H A R L E S C O R R A D O , P H . D . ’ 8 3 is included here as the CEO of an organization that supports Webb through corporate contributions and also employs a number of Webb graduates. Dr. Chick Corrado came to Webb Institute in the fall of 1979, choosing Webb for two reasons, yacht design and free tuition. He had been given a great referral by a family friend, and he was very impressed by Webb Institute’s excellent reputation.

After graduating from Webb in 1983, Chick went on to MIT, receiving his Master’s in ocean engineering in 1986 and doctorate in acoustics in 1993. Chick is a Life Member of the Webb Alumni Association and has been involved in advancing Webb personally and professionally. Chick feels his greatest accomplishment since leaving Webb was founding his company, Applied Physical Sciences Corporation in 2002 in Groton, Connecticut. Chick has been married to Sandy, an artist and great mom to their two daughters, Abby and Casey, for 27 years. Abby is 20 and currently enrolled at Wheaton College in Massachusetts; Casey is 18 and entered Tufts University as a freshman in the fall of 2012. Chick’s favorite professor during his time at Webb was Rick Neilson, who acted as a mentor to Chick throughout his years at Webb. He is very happy to see that Professor Neilson is back at Webb as Dean of Faculty. A committed and generous donor, Chick shows his loyalty to Webb in many ways. He currently has five Webbies working for him, and for the past few years, Applied Physical Sciences Corporation has hired one or two Webb graduates every year. All have gone on to pursue graduate degrees at various universities. He said he’s found that there is no technical project that a recent Webb graduate cannot make important contributions to—and their work ethic is always exceptional. Beyond hiring them for jobs, Applied Physical Sciences helped Webb students by recently giving software to Naval Architecture Professor Rick Royce to provide and advise for thesis work. W H Y W E B B ? When asked what his fondest memory at Webb was, Chick mentions his work experience program during sophomore year. The trip he took working as an engine cadet to Australia and New Zealand was a remarkable, enjoyable and unique experience, something he feels he would not have experienced at any other college or university.

The resounding theme is that Webb is much loved and respected, not only by alumni, but by the maritime industry and members of other constituencies as well.

Webb’s Proud Parents: WPA Survey Results

he Webb Parents Association (WPA) was re-formed during the 2008–09 academic year. During the 2011–12 academic year the WPA formed a Comprehensive Strategic Planning Committee to propose future initiatives for the Association. The committee’s first task was to develop and produce a survey for the Webb parents, the findings of which were presented at the Webb Strategic Planning Seminar held this past May.

A brief summary of the survey found: • Parents believe their child is being well prepared for life after Webb, both in terms of technical competency and from a whole-life perspective. • More than 64% of parents say that Webb has exceeded their expectations. • An overwhelming majority (90% +) view the Winter Work Experience as the top aspect of attending Webb, followed closely by the excellence of Webb’s faculty and the student work ethic. • Securing additional financial resources weighed in as the top priority for Webb from a parent’s perspective; adding new partnerships with other schools was also an important consideration. • Parents felt Webb should do more to improve its brand and outreach through additional press contact and attendance at college fairs. • The majority of parents felt that their children were very happy with their progress at Webb.

Parents Making a Difference at Webb

all 2011 began the second year of the Webb Parent Annual Fund Committee with ten families volunteering for this committee and working to personally invite all parents to support Webb through the Annual Fund. Their efforts were successful: With 76% of parents participating, Webb parents contributed $94,758 to the 2011–12 Annual Fund. This figure reflects a 27% increase in dollars contributed and an increase of 7% in the participation rate from the 2010–11 fiscal year. As parents we feel it our privilege and obligation to support these efforts, and we anticipate continued success. The results of the 2011–12 efforts speak for themselves. As we improve understanding of the value of unrestricted gifts to Webb's Annual Fund and raise awareness about how critical these gifts are to the financial health and well-being of our college, we will see even greater contributions in the future.

Legacy Giving at Webb A number of Webb Alumni have taken action to help sustain William H. Webb’s vision by including Webb Institute in their estate planning. Members of Webb’s Heritage Society know the value of their planned gifts will help sustain Webb well beyond their lifetime. Planned giving has become an important dynamic within institutional giving in today’s economic times. It allows individuals to make large gifts that cost little or nothing today. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for educational institutions and other family members/heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate. Ultimately, a planned gift is any gift made in a person’s lifetime or at death as part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate planning. Whether a contributor uses cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance, a retirement plan, etc., the benefits of funding a planned gift can make this type of charitable giving a great incentive to both you as a donor and Webb as an institution. During fiscal year 2011–2012, Webb benefitted substantially from the generosity of alumni who included Webb in their long-term financial planning. They are Willard V. Markey ’35, Allen N. would like to begin my first Annual Report to the entire Webb community by saying how excited I am to be here, and how excited I am for the future of Webb Institute. As I have said to many of you in face-to-face conversations, I will do whatever it takes to ensure that the proper foundation is set for a successful major fundraising initiative in the future. As this report shows, it has been an extremely exciting year at Webb Institute on Long Island Sound in Glen Cove, NY. We continue to enjoy very impressive participation in our Annual Fund, especially the Webb Alumni Fund and Parent Annual Fund. Planned Giving also played a significant role this past fiscal year, and the implementation of a strategic Major Gifts program will lay the groundwork for Webb to continue its tradition of excellence. Efforts to further engage corporations and foundations will play an increasing role in the years to come. In October of 2011, following on the heels of CLAG 2, steps were taken to bring a very special Webb message to all alumni: “We need your financial support.” Webbies answered the call on several levels. Participation remains very high, and the Annual Fund’s total dollars raised was quite impressive. The Parent Annual Fund, too, continues to show encouraging gains, both in total dollars raised and participation. Alumni continue to make Webb a target of their philanthropy through gift planning. As documented throughout this report, Webb realized significant revenue from a number of estates, which shows that in the most traditional sense of fundraising Webbies are responding. Please note that we are updating the “Supporting Webb” pages on our website to include a fully interactive section on Planned Giving. As always, feel free to contact me with any questions. Webb also receives support from various corporations and foundations, and we will continue our efforts to attract additional support in these areas. Institutional leadership is investing its efforts in both areas with the goal of furthering our relationships with the organizations that gain the most from a Webb education. In closing, I would like to reiterate that our move to a major gifts focused fundraising program has the unanimous support of Webb’s Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, alumni and close friends. I believe this very initiative, when fully implemented, will allow Webb Institute to realize its full fundraising potential and preserve its “full tuition scholarship” model while becoming financially sustainable in perpetuity. The challenge is great… and it is a challenge we will meet.

his year’s overview is written from the perspective of fundraising progress and our overall financial status. The Annual Report is replete with vital and stimulating reading so I will do my best to be brief Joseph J. Cuneo ’57 and to the point. Just as 2011 was a challenging year so was 2012. Every year since 2008 has been challenging for any investment portfolio, especially one that is so essential and depended upon to provide a major portion of financial support for operations. Financial results for Webb and our peer schools show that FY2012 was indeed a challenging year. Investment returns varied widely and our overall gain of .64% before withdrawals was in line with peer college and university endowment returns. This of course does not include gains some institutions experienced from major fundraising campaigns. The net result was that the corpus declined in value due to our continuing need to withdraw funds to support Webb’s operating costs. The diversity of our investments was carefully monitored throughout the fiscal year, and a number of adjustments were made to preserve capital during the very turbulent and trying last months of calendar 2011. Given that our endowment is not composed solely of stocks, but rather a diversity of assets including some fixed income investments, the S&P 500 is not truly an index that we can always expect to beat. In 2012 the Board’s Finance Committee adopted a very conservative method of calculating our draw rate by considering unanticipated and unrestricted planned gifts as additions to the portfolio rather than as current Annual Fund gifts. This has the net effect of making our draw rate appear higher than it would be if we counted those funds as current contributions from alumni. Using this approach our draw rate from the endowment was 7.07%: slightly in excess of the budgeted 6.9% and well in excess of our longer term goal of 4.75%. If we treated planned gifts as current contributions—as do many other schools—our draw rate for fiscal 2012 would be 5.8%, bringing Webb closer to achieving a long term sustainable position while maintaining our

full tuition scholarship policy. This clearly illustrates the importance of planned gifts to Webb as one leg of the stool to return Webb to long term financial sustainability. The second leg of the stool is our Annual Fund and all of its components. The third leg of the stool is major gifts from within and beyond our immediate Webb family. All three are vital, now and in the years to come. While Webb is in no hurry to receive planned gifts and wishes all of us long and fulfilling lives, realization and 2013 expectations for planned gifts are strong, primarily based upon the passing of just one alumnus, Al Hoyt. We are fortunate in having added our new Director of Development, Rick Paradis, who has shown every indication of being an adept furniture maker, capable of making the stool larger and stronger in all respects. Annual giving has had its high points and its areas of concern. There is no more vital and relatively

predictable leg of the stool. Alumni giving, though increased, failed to reach the goal we set. But we came close: If all of those who participated in 2011 stayed the course in 2012 we would have made and passed the goal, easily. To those too many who give in an otherthan-regular annual manner let me add my personal plea to the repeated encouragements of John Malone and others. Your regular annual support, large or small, is vital to Webb. Percentage of alumni giving will be more important than ever as we work to strengthen that third leg of our stool. The success of other components of our annual giving has been gratifying, even stellar in the case of the Parents Fund. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the percentage of parents giving soon surpass that of our alumni. Our thanks a thousand-fold to Alison and Hal Granger. Another scholarship gift of $100,000 from ABS added to make 2012 overall a very successful fundraising year.

Given the protracted challenging financial environment, Webb continues to operate with an austerity budget philosophy—though a cursory look at the numbers might lead one to think otherwise. Over the past two years our reported annual operating expenditures grew from slightly less than $5.9 million in fiscal 2010 to almost $7.7 million in fiscal 2012. Just as in fiscal 2011, the numbers alone tell only one part of the story. A major enhancement of the Model Basin and a new flow channel materially improving the facilities and experimental capabilities of both, were entirely funded by a government grant discussed in last year’s report. The costs of these and other funded initiatives total $891,537 in fiscal 2012. Other capital expenses were $798,401, largely covering the very effective replacement of Webb’s waterfront bulkhead. These improvements, complemented

by our Distance Learning Center, are vital to the continued enrichment of the Webb learning experience. Adjusting recurring operating costs to reflect these non-recurring charges would bring the 2012 total operating expenses to within a very few percent of the 2010 number. We have been operating on an austere basis but we are making major progress nonetheless! Our focus is and always has been on maintaining the strongest faculty and facilities to provide what is arguably the nation’s broadest and best engineering education. We have successfully managed the replacement of our irreplaceable Dean and several retiring faculty members with strong and equally irreplaceable new faces, all accomplished while broadening the expertise of our teaching skills and experience. Notwithstanding our austerity budget, we are examining new initiatives to expand Webb’s capabilities—some of which can

only be achieved with major philanthropic support. That support will be sought from all existing constituencies but also from new friends of Webb. We have engaged the services of a leading capital campaign consultant to assist us in identifying and cultivating relationships with the broader philanthropic community. Based upon this work a new phrase has been increasingly evident. Not only is Webb “America’s Toughest” and “Most Loved” school, it is also “America’s Best Kept Secret” in higher education. Each one of you can help to change that in your day-to-day activities and by letting us know of any connections you may have with people or foundations who might be interested in Webb’s mission. Support for Webb comes in many forms, and it is vital for us to continue to fulfill our mission and to perpetuate the ideals and goals of our founder, William H. Webb.

ebb Institute’s ability to sustain its existence is directly related to its ability to attract funds for endowments and scholarships—funds that support our students, faculty and staff. Unlike typical college and university revenue models, Webb offers “full tuition” scholarships to every student, making endowment and scholarship proceeds extremely important to funding the institution. From the start Webb Institute has relied upon its endowment, through funds provided by William H. Webb and later through the generosity of alumni, family and friends. Endowments are the very core of every non-profit’s long-term financial health, allowing the institution to exist in perpetuity; at Webb these funds are the very lifeblood that has helped sustain us since the beginning. The concept is as relevant today as it was in 1889, when William H. Webb established the original endowment. Webb is supported by a variety of endowments, including endowed professorships, scholarships and other endowed funds designated for various purposes. Scholarships—need or merit-based, available to freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors, or targeted for specific purposes—help Webb attract and retain the best and brightest young minds. Securing these types of gifts takes time and energy, but obviously, it is well worth the effort: Webb is a magical place supported by extraordinary donors.

Spirit of Generosity Zeien Expands Benefactor Role lfred M. Zeien ’52, one of Webb Institute’s most notable alumni, has once again recognized a need at Webb and responded in an incredibly thoughtful and generous way. Mr. Zeien’s first major gift was $1 million in 1999, to create the highly successful Zeien Lecture Series, which exposes Webb students to a wide variety of global issues and augments the highly specialized curriculum.

In the end, the Zeiens donated another million dollars to endow a scholarship that would offset the tuition for one Webb student in perpetuity.”

During a visit with President and Mrs. Olsen at the Zeien home, Mr. and Mrs. Zeien, always sensitive to the changing needs of Webb Institute, asked for a candid answer about how they could help Webb once again. In the end, the Zeien’s donated another million dollars to endow a scholarship that would offset the tuition for one Webb student in perpetuity. The first such student: Eric Harris ’14. Eric was selected to carry the title Zeien Scholar, an honor that publically recognizes both the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Zeien and the stellar academic and leadership performance Eric has shown. Upon Eric’s graduation, the honor will be bestowed upon another sophomore. Al Zeien has a stellar academic and leadership record of his own. Following his graduation from Webb Institute in 1952, he earned an M.B.A. at Harvard Business School, and Webb awarded him a Sc.D. in 1997. Mr. Zeien is retired Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the Gillette Company, which he joined in 1968. Prior to joining Gillette, he held a number of operational, sales and financial posts in the marine industry, including involvement with the early work on nuclear submarines, and ultimately served as the operating head of the General Dynamics Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. He has been on the boards of a wide variety of major corporations, hospitals, and oceanographic agencies. Here at Webb, however, Mr. Zeien will be remembered not just for his success and business aptitude but for the generosity that will help the best and brightest to succeed as he did.

HOW TO BUILD A SHIP IN ROCKVILLE CENTRE SOUND BITE

Students in South Side High School’s Engineering Club visited Webb Institute to prepare for the “Anything That Floats Race” on June 3 at Beekman Beach in Oyster Bay. With their teacher Todd Russo, the students toured the Institute, an elite engineering college specializing in naval architecture and marine engineering, founded by prominent shipbuilder William H. Webb. South Side students met with the Institute’s dean, Rick Neilson, and Webb students Samantha Griswold, Chris Licato, Eric Harris and Nolan Conway, who assisted them in organizing their ideas. The South Side students divided into groups to present their ideas as they discussed the Archimedes

Principle and vessel dimensions, along with other calculations. They will begin the process of searching for recyclable materials and designing and building their boat or flotation device. Last year South Side competed and placed third in the competition, which pits them against other Long Island schools and individuals who are up for the challenge. To win, they must navigate the course as quickly as possible and be as creative and colorful as possible. This year they will compete in the senior division, and hope to take first place. There are a number of students at Webb Institute who were involved in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics in high school. Their interest has continued and several have volunteered at FIRST Robotics competitions around Long Island. Nolan Conway ’15 led a one-day workshop at Webb in October to provide guidance to interested Long Island FIRST Robotics teams on how to organize, develop and execute a successful entry. The workshop included several Webb students with FIRST Robotics experience. This rewarding event was attended by more than 80 high school students who are now very excited about Webb Institute.

Webb Every Year (WebbEY) Program The implementation of the Webb Every Year (WebbEY) Program was instituted during our 2006–2007 Annual Fund Campaign. Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Webb’s success. Initially, this program recognized alumni consecutive years of giving and now includes family and friends. Winter Work Term A very unique part of the “Webb experience” is the Winter Work program, which takes place for every student during the months of January and February. During these two months all of our students work at a variety of organizations in positions focused on the marine industry. Webbies gain invaluable “hands on” work experiences all over the world from this very special program. These positions include freshmen working in shipyards, sophomores working on ships at sea, juniors and seniors working in engineering and design firms. Not only do our students love this program, but the travel opportunity that comes along with many of these positions is very exciting. While many of the positions are across the United States, more and more of them are happening overseas in a variety of countries such as England, Denmark, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. Webb is sincerely grateful to those companies and many of our dedicated alumni who made these work experiences possible during our 2012 Winter Work Term.
