McArthurGlen East Midlands is on hand with five key tips on how to get party ready in a matter of minutes. 1. Pack a pair of heels in your handbag. Stilettos are the quickest way to glam up any outfit, making you party ready in seconds. To tap into this season’s trend, pick up an embellished pair- whether it is a cluster of gems at the toe or a statement sequinned heel. 2. A little black dress is a versatile and flattering piece that will be in fashion forever; team with black opaque tights and an oversized knit for work, and a statement necklace and metallic clutch for the evening. 3. A simple, chic top and bold skirt is a great evening look, and the top can transition from office to party. You won’t need many accessories in addition to this statement skirt, just add killer heels and you’ll be ready in a flash. 4. A berry coloured sheer blouse can be easily dressed up or down and is a key piece for autumn winter. Team with cigarette line trousers and satchel for day, and a leather pencil skirt or shorts for an on trend evening look. 5. Statement jewellery takes your look from boardroom to bar. Whether it’s a show stopping necklace, dramatic cuff or cluster of rings, bold accessories are the perfect way to be glamorous on the go in under 60 seconds.

SPECIAL FEATURE:

Flappers & Gentlemen: Blake Edwards Speaks Easy to SIXTYNINE DEGREES

Blake has always been different. Whether it’s his edgy take on a retro 30s look, or his rather unique career path, Blake has never been one to follow the crowd. So striking out on his own with his first hair salon comes as no surprise. Flappers & Gentlemen launches in St Martin’s Square in December 2013, and promises to be a sideways look at the high street hair salon concept. Blake says “I’ve always loved the classic qualities of personal service, high quality cuts with individual styling. Many of today’s salons seem so clinical and like a conveyor belt of customers, we’re slowing it down and bringing it back to the Old School.” Flappers & Gentlemen is no theme salon, (don’t expect people dancing the Charleston by the shampoo stations) but it will serve whisky and have 1920s cocktails actually called the Flapper and the Gentleman created by the Urban Alchemist mixologist.

“We are not a 20s salon where people will walk out with pin curls and finger waves, but I love the era, like the Old School gentleman” says Blake, “I love how men used to look prim and proper. It’s fashionable at the moment, with The Great Gatsby, but I was doing it before. We have been planning the name of the shop for a while and the décor does have a 20s feel.” But it’s not just the feel and decor that will be different about Flappers & Gentlemen. Blake explains “It’s all about training and development. Our focus is on educating our staff and building a real team – it’s something that can be lacking in salons these days. Turnover is high and people can be treated poorly. We want to create an environment in which people are supported and nurtured, enabling them to thrive.” Flappers & Gentlemen has signed up to Leicester Cares, an organisation that places disadvantaged and potentially troubled youngsters with local

companies to gain valuable work experience and social skills. Blake believes this is important work. “We want to give something back to the community that raised us and the industry that trained us, and this seemed a suitable way. We know it won’t work all the time and that we have to go through the pain of managing and educating someone full time in a busy salon, but we are prepared for that and committed to the process.” In addition, the salon is holding a special event for charity. To celebrate the launch of the salon, the 7th December will see the Flappers & Gentlemen team donate their time between 9am and 5pm, styling hair for free for members of the public. “We then hope that people will donate the price of a cut & finish to the charity. The Children’s Society works with youngsters who are growing up in poverty or danger – it’s a cause that’s close to our hearts.” Blake says. Flappers & Gentlemen will also be the only salon in Leicester to be designated a Diamond Salon by hair brand Unite. Blake explains “We are one of only a handful of salons outside of London to be a stockist for Unite –it’s a great exclusive deal for us. Their commitment to us shows their confidence in the quality of the styling in the salon – something that is very important to me personally.” The salon will launch to the public at its St Martin’s Square location on 10th December. KEEP THE CHRISTMAS BULGE AT BAY…

12

Nathan D’Rozario, gym manager at theclubandspa in Birmingham, regularly sees people work hard in the lead up to December in order to look and feel great in their LBDs and DJs, only to pile the pounds straight back on by over-indulging during the festive period. Trimming down those Christmas calories can help to keep the festive flab away and is actually surprisingly easy.

“Keeping fit is all about staying consistent. This not only applies to what you are eating, but also to your exercise routine. Giving up for just a few weeks will only make it harder to get back into the swing of things come the New Year. You could always book in for some personal training sessions to help you maintain your motivation and reach your goals” Nathan is no slave driver though, and is keen to point out that it’s still possible to enjoy the Christmas period without going over the top. “I spoke to Rob Pritchett, head chef at Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse, Bar & Grill, to find out if there were any easy ways

to reduce Christmas calorie intake without upsetting your taste buds and was amazed to discover that if you braise rather than roast your Christmas turkey, and if you swap your goose fat roasted potatoes for grilled sweet potatoes, you could save 297 calories and a massive 10.2g of fat – perfect for keeping those calories under control without compromising on taste.” For those who enjoy their Christmas tipple, Rodizio Rico in The Cube have created a festive cocktail that is both refreshing and healthy. Perfect for Christmas parties, the Watermelon Gin Fizz contains only 153 calories and is a great substitute for the sugar-filled mulled wines and creamy cocktails that pop up at Christmas.

FRIGHTENING FACT!

The average person gobbles 7,000 calories on Christmas Day. The recommended daily consumption is no more than 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men!

So whilst there is no reason to feel guilty about enjoying yourself during the festive season, it’s worth remembering that, on average, people gain between 1 and 5 lbs (2kg) over the Christmas period – definitely an unwanted Christmas gift! Try following some of the tips above to help to banish the blubber this winter and keep you looking great all year round!

When he burst into mainstream consciousness with ‘Pass Out’ in 2009, Tinie Tempah already had so many clothes he had to keep some at his aunt’s house. Four years on and the 24 year old rapper from South East London has become one of the most important performers of this generation, laying strong foundations not only in music with his record label Disturbing London, but also in fashion with his own clothing line and work with the British Fashion Council. This winter sees the release of his widely anticipated second album Demonstration, so it was the perfect time for Matt Blackwell to catch up with him and talk about all things Tinie.

23

Your debut album, Disc-Overy came out in 2010 and since then the Tinie Tempah phenomenon has absolutely blown up. What do you think it is about your music that has struck such a chord with people all around the world? I think there’s definitely a feel good element that people connect with which is always good. You get a great indication of what people love about your music when you do festivals because there’s always a big line up and people aren’t always necessarily there to see you. When the feel good songs come on, that’s when I really see people come alive. Also the randomness of it, it’s very British and there’s a lot of wit in there, my music is just a lot of fun really. Can you pick a standout moment of your career so far? Has there been one moment that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up?

to Pharrell and Zane Lowe, yet the album still sounds like one cohesive piece of work. What do you think pulls it all together? I think there’s a certain mood to it. There are loads of different producers on there which hopefully gives it different vibes and there are different genres which come in and out of each song, but I definitely agree that it feels like one body of work and I’m sure that’s because a good 80% of the album has the same low, mellow kind of mood. The order of tracks is important too. It’s something that people don’t always consider, but I think the track ordering makes it flow nicely. How do retain whilst of the

you approach an album in order to your own integrity as a Grime artist also satisfying the commercial needs music industry?

There’s a lot to be honest, but the one I still can’t get over is the closing ceremony of the Olympics; being called for that was such a big deal for me, it was amazing. The wealth of other artists and personalities that were around, from Fatboy Slim to the Spice Girls, it was crazy! I’ll never forget all the preparation and how much they didn’t want anyone to mess anything up.

Good question! That’s basically 50% of everything Demonstration is about and the album is hopefully me ‘demonstrating’ that. I just make sure that there’s some sort of Grime, urban or underground influence in everything I do; whether it’s down to a particular sound or tempo, a certain lyric or the way I say something, or by switching up the beat and making it a little bit unorthodox – which is a lot of what Grime is – I always try to make sure there’s an element of it in there.

With Disc-Overy spawning two number one singles along with BRIT and MOBO award wins, how hard was it to write a follow up?

Are there any artists out there who you think have got the balance a little bit wrong?

I feel like the success just motivated me more, because before the first album came out very few people knew who I was at all, Disc-Overy opened me up and gave me an advantage that I didn’t have before. I wanted to use that as an opportunity to get the right things out and hopefully make even more people feel like that again, if not better. Demonstration didn’t really feel like a difficult thing, I wanted to make sure I took my time with it; got it sounding how I wanted it to sound and got the producers that I wanted on there and that’s what took a while, but it was a great learning curve.

If I’m being entirely honest with you I think it’s a very difficult thing to get right and I think that’s why we haven’t seen many artists who have come from that genre able to release albums that do well on a mainstream and international level. That’s not to say they’ve got it wrong, I just don’t think there are a lot of people who are necessarily thinking like that. I think you’ll start to see a lot more sprout up when artists can get a little bit more of that balance.

You mentioned producers and there’s an eclectic mix on Demonstration, from Diplo

Always! I remember I was in the studio in New York about a year ago and this

guy had posters and post-it notes everywhere, all with these different sayings on. One that really stuck with me was “Evolve or be extinct.” I think people like it when you keep fresh and they can hear something different in you that they didn’t necessarily hear the first time round, it’s something I’m always very conscious of. Sometimes there are things that are slightly unconventional that you don’t think will make it on the radio, but the main thing is that you’re daring enough to try and just go for it. I once heard you perform a cover of a Stevie Wonder song, where do you take more influence from, the past or the present? At this moment in time there are a lot of people longing for that ‘back in the day’ kind of sound, but I’m an artist of this generation. One thing I like about new music is the fusion of sounds that you’re able to hear in one song, the electronic element, the collaborative element; these are all quite new. I embrace the modern day because in 10 or 20 years time I want people to look back and have great things to say. You’ve collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry, has there been one person who’s blown you away? Yeah, she’s more new, but Laura Mvula. I heard her album and thought it was perfect, like flawless. Usually I find that when you can listen to an album from start to finish without even realising, that’s when you’ve heard something great and I definitely felt like that with her record. I think she’s world class and I actively went out to get her on Demonstration, she’s got a very bright future ahead of her. Disc-Overy was very much about aspirations and growing up, are you where you want to be in life now? Have your aspirations changed or are you still waiting to visit Scunthorpe? [Laughs] My main aspiration! It’s funny, the further up the ladder you go, there’s always more that you want to achieve. There are so many great things I was able to achieve off the back of the first album but the second time around was about taking it to another place. There haven’t been many British rappers who have been able to fly the flag internationally, so that’s definitely one of my biggest aspirations. I know there are still objectives to reach and as longs as I continue to give 100% I believe I’ll continue to move forward. You’ve achieved so much and you’re still only 24, which is the same age www.69-degrees.co.uk

as me, I can’t even imagine what I’d do with that much money, so what’s the most extravagant thing you’ve treated yourself to so far? [Laughs] That’s funny! Probably watches. They’re extravagant but they hold their value, so I like to think they’re quite a smart buy. One time I was in the airport and I saw this really nice Audemars Piguet [watch], I was feeling very spontaneous and just thought ‘I’m going to do it’! It was very extravagant and very random. What’s next for Tinie Tempah? What do you want to achieve that you’ve not already managed to do? A Grammy is one the biggest things. I want to make sure that I’m as successful as I am here in as many parts of the world as possible. I want to have the impact that I was able to have in the UK and that’s what keeps driving me. I want to be cemented and consolidated as part of modern day popular culture. That’s really the next goal, just to make myself as big a brand as I possibly can. Tinie Tempah will be at Wolverhampton Civic Hall 25 - 26 March 2014 and Capital FM Arena Nottingham 2 April 2014. Demonstration is out now.

“There are still objectives to reach and as longs as I give 100%, I believe I’ll continue to move forward”

SHINE ON When it comes to party makeup there is one simple rule all belles of the ball need to follow... pile on the glam! From the perfect pout to a beautiful barnet, go with the adage that more really is more. Of course, red lips will always be the sexiest option for the festive party season, but for a more sulty look take your inspiration from the A/W14 catwalk and go for barely there shades of palest pink and peach. You can then add an injection of colour with gorgeously dark metallic eye shades teamed with inky liners for maximum impact.

Outshine the competition at the Christmas Party this year. LISA PIDDINGTON from Harvey Nichols offers advice on how to create a wow!

Remember though, heavily made-up eyes work best with pale lips, and a statement red pucker needs paler eye shades to pop ... you’re not auditioning for the role of pantomime dame, after all. 4.

Match your nails to your lipsticks to show off perfectly manicured talons. There are some amazing shades available, from super pale nudes to dark berry colours experiment to find your favourite. Finally, when it comes to your crowning glory there are two styles that rule this season - sleeked back chic or cascading waves. To achieve either, you need to start with a hard-working treatment to nourish and beautify your locks. SPECIAL FEATURE:

EXPERIENCE THE ELITE WITH EMMA BROWN! 39

S

o much more than a stylist, more like a force of nature, salon owner Emma Brown has it all – a list of awards and accolades as long as your arm, a celebrity clientele and now her own brand new salon in Leicester’s trendy Queen’s Road district. She even has a cute French Bulldog called Pierre who is a resident of the salon on Clarendon Park Road.

Emma realised her dream of opening her own business this October, and marked the official opening with a VIP Launch Party that featured celebs including Kieron Richardson from Hollyoaks. Emma has been styling for Kieron since his first visit to Leicester for Pride last year, “After that I had more compliments about my hair that I had ever had, including my boyfriend who said it was ‘the best hair cut I’d ever had’, so I’ve tried to stick with Emma ever since!” said Kieron at the launch. And you know you’re doing something right when a national television star says so. So what’s her secret? Emma thinks it’s about creating and maintaining a look that’s tailored to meet the needs of each client. “It’s about having a long term relationship with a client’s hair. From consultancy to home care, you have to create a look that is sustainable for a client – one that grows out perfectly and that they can make look fantastic at home.” Emma and her stylist Tom pride themselves on combining creativity and quality. Emma says “We keep up with the latest styles and techniques so our clients don’t have to. But that doesn’t mean you have to go for something funky or on-trend, but whatever your style it needs to retain its shape and look.”

And Emma certainly has the skills to create something special for each and every client. Trained at top salon Mantini’s before moving to a management position at Barrie Stephen Hair, Emma has been working in the industry since she was 15. These days she boasts a Masters in Colour from Schwarzkopf (the brand’s highest award for colourists) and has styled celebs for photoshoots with Hello! Magazine and been a backstage stylist for FHM amongst others. It’s a pretty impressive list for a girl from Leicester. “I feel like I’ve come home to my roots with this salon.” said Emma as she grew up in the neighbourhood in which she now runs her own salon. “I really wanted to invest in my old community and make a difference to the area.” And Emma’s stunning salon is certainly a welcome addition to the area, with stylish pink lighting and a chaise longue for waiting clients. The salon is also one of only two in the county to stock products from Australian brand Kevin Murphy, creator of the ‘Color Bug’ hair chalk, this year’s must-have hair product. “I love Kevin Murphy products as they are all designed to fix a problem or address a need. The success of the Color Bug has been amazing – the colour is really vibrant and then comes out with one wash. Fabulous for festivals and nights out.”

POST-PARTY PICK-ME-UP John Paul McGuirk, from Harvey Nichols, offers advice on skin rescue remedies to get you through the party season and beyond.

The run-up to Christmas and New Year is one long list of parties – indulgence and then some. And while festive excess may be good for the soul it certainly does nothing for your winter grooming routine. With all those late night parties and one too many Jägerbombs, it’s no surprise that the stresses and strains of December and beyond begin to show.

So if you’re suffering from Rudolph’s red nose and dry skin it’s time to get your complexion some affection. And here’s how.

1: Elemis Pro-Collagen Advanced Eye Serum, £39: Perk up your peepers with this super-light formula that packs heavy-weight results. Helps smooth and firm, targeting fine lines and wrinkles, for a more youthful appearance. 2: Crème de la Mer The Radiant Infusion, £90: A very welcome wake up call for the skin, with its combination of powerful ingredients it is designed to stimulate the skin and minimise pores, leaving it clear and brighter. 3: Eve Lom Rescue Mask, £35: A festive essential that offers a deep cleanse without drying, it gently decongests pores and absorbs excess oil which helps to calm redness and irritation.

4: Bliss Daily Detox Facial Toner, £20.50: Super refreshing, mega-moisturising primer filled to the brim with anti-oxidants that work to purify and protect the skin from everyday aggressors. John Paul McGuirk – Private Shopper at Harvey Nichols Birmingham.

It’s Up To You, New Year, New York! January can be a bleak month with little to look forward to. With the weather howling a gale outside the temptation to batten down the hatches and hibernate until spring can be overwhelming. So why not escape the post-festive funk and plan a trip to New York? Low season rates means there are a multitude of deals to be had on flights and hotels, so why not make New York your New Year resolution asks Kevin Urquhart.

A

nd what better way to make use of the low season pricing than to treat yourself to the ‘turn left’ Business First experience on United Airlines. A combination of flat bed seats, 61-strong personal film selection, a chef-prepared, three course meal and unlimited champers, it’s safe to say we arrived in the Big Apple in style.

that the eagle-eyed will have seen on the screens of Sex & The City. Remember the episode where the foursome attended the opening night of ‘Raw’, the sushi restaurant? That’s actually in Brooklyn and is called Sea. No visit to Brooklyn is complete without stopping by as the Thai food was easily the best we’ve ever tasted. And they do some incredible cocktails, too. Fab-ulous!

Whether a New York newbie or a seasoned traveller, the sheer scale of New York remains breathtaking. But let’s get our facts right first. When we say New York, what we really mean is Manhattan for New York comprises several distinct districts: Queens, Brooklyn, New Jersey and, of course, Manhattan. All of which have their very own personality and flavour.

www.seathainyc.com

Most New York virgins stay within the grid of Manhattan, you could spend a lifetime here and never truly master the city, but for frequent visitors or native New Yorkers, a quick ferry ride across the East River to Brooklyn is a feast for the senses. The ferry crossing takes around 40 minutes (or the more athletic can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge). Work out your arrival point on the facing banks of Brooklyn as there are four – the fourth in the shadows of the Bridge itself. If you want to immerse yourself in supercool street culture, not unlike the Shoreditch area of London, go for the second stop. The ferry gives you a unique opportunity to see Manhattan from the water, unobstructed and the views of the Lower East Side are to die for, with the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings towering above the city. Dominating the skyline as you make your way along the river, Ground Zero emerges, defiant and uncompromising. It’s a seriously good photo opportunity. Brooklyn by contrast is smaller, less high rise than NYC but chic to the max. Trendy boutiques and artist studios rub shoulders with avant garde eateries www.69-degrees.co.uk

That said, the Manhattan grid, which covers almost the entirety of Manhattan is more than enough to sate your Big Apple appetite.

THE RULES TO EXPLORING NYC Getting the most out of your New York vacation will be as much about pre-planning as it is about getting your bearings when you’re there. First rule, get a map. Most hotels have these, or look out for one of the many NYC&Co Tourism offices, which are a wealth of information. Get yourself one of their City Passes, as this not only acts as a pre-paid admission to many of the top attractions (also saving you money), but also fast-tracks you in the queues too, making it a great investment on both counts. www.citypass.com Second rule is know your North from your South and your East from West, or you’re going to struggle. Manhattan runs east to west in Avenues, south to north in Streets and once you’ve cracked it, you’ll start to feel like a pro. A good rule of thumb is that if you can see the Ground Zero Building, you’re facing South or

Downtown. Conversely, the Empire State is North, or Uptown. The grid does stop at 8th Street though. Below this, you’re in China Town, Little Italy, Nolita and SoHo with its more traditional street names. It’s down here that you’ll find the National September 11 Memorial (aka Ground Zero) and Century 21 Talking of which, the third rule is to have a plan. Prebooking is essential for some attractions, so don’t leave it until you’re there or you may face disappointment.

NATIONAL SEPTEMBER 11 MEMORIAL

You cannot visit New York without a visit to the Ground Zero site. I visited the site a few years back and it had retained an indelible sadness and stillness, but that’s gone. The site is now a beacon of hope, rebirth and defiance. The new World Trade Center, although unfinished, is already the city’s highest building thrusting into the sky once more. www.911memorial.org

If you want a 360-degree view of Manhattan and don’t suffer from vertigo, this is your mecca. The vista is breathtaking, quite literally. Open until Midnight, our tip is to go late at night as the queues are almost non-existent and the twinkly lights of the city are just magical. www.esbnyc.com

THE BOATHOUSE IN CENTRAL PARK

The recently refurbished Hotel Beacon is a fantastic base from which to explore the city. On Broadway at 75th Street, the Hotel Beacon is located in the wealthy Upper West Side, close to Central Park and the Dakota (where John Lennon was shot). We loved many things about the hotel, especially the luxe-suites. The self-catering, two bedroom suite is $550 per night during low season (Jan and Feb), so can work out exceptionally cost-effective if you don’t mind sharing the apartment-style room. www.beaconhotel.com

Literally a hop, skip and a jump from the Ground Zero site, this is an absolute must for any doyenne of fashion, as it’s designer clobber central, but at heavily discounted prices. Don’t think this is a TKMaxx-esque rummage experience, though: think Selfridges on a Shoestring. www.c21stores.com

It was almost a mistake booking our dinner reservation for the first night. Jet-lagged (despite flying Business Class with United), we could not do this incredible restaurant justice. Sure, the service was borderline laissez-faire, but the food was second to none. www.thecentralparkboathouse.com

As if you need an excuse to don your finest, this cruise around Manhattan begins from Pier 81 aboard World Yacht’s Duchess and is, quite simply, unmissable. Setting sail at dusk, this three-hour voyage literally takes you in a circle around Manhattan island affording you views even money can’t buy. To see the city as it shifts and changes from dusk to dark is both humbling and beautiful, whatever the season. A tasty three course dinner is served throughout the trip, as part of your ticket price. www.worldyacht.com www.69-degrees.co.uk

48 CLUBBING COMES BACK TO LEICESTER Leicester’s club scene has taken a battering over the past few years with demanding local clubbers choosing their grooves from fresher clubs further afield. All of that however is about to change, there’s a buzz in a city which is welcoming the reopening of two iconic venues, the return of some major league club nights and the creation of some all new classics. SIXTYNINE degrees talks to Dale Walton from new venue VENOM about bringing sexy back to midlands clubbing and how he’s planning to bring a bit of Mediterranean swagger to the city’s nightlife.

How did Venom come about? Leicester hasn’t really got an actual lounge club style nightclub and although it’s been tried by other venues the atmosphere has never been quite right. There’s a huge demand in the city from the new breed of style-focused young professionals who want to experience a top quality night that’s pushing a few boundaries and keeping things stylish. We are trying to focus on something like you would get in Marbella with all of the basics covered; a really good dance floor, lighting, sound system and of course some amazing music. Why did you choose the old Quebec as the venue for Venom? It’s a great space that will be evolving over the next few months. We’ve completely stripped out the ground floor; it’s unrecognisable and we have some big plans for the first floor followed by the addition of a penthouse studio and roof terrace. The lighting rig that we have in the centre of the dance-floor is sick. It’s the kind of thing you’d see in Ibiza and there is nowhere in Leicester that has that visual. The sound is going to be major as well, the whole package just works so well. So where have you come from then? I’m a Leicester boy through and through. I helped out with low level PR back in the day for nights like ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ and ‘Safe House’ before I went across to Gibraltar. The music over there was absolutely dire so I thought I needed to make a www.69-degrees.co.uk

stand and bought some DJ’s over that I know from Leicester, which luckily was a hit. From then on I’ve put on my own nights all over Europe including Ibiza, Marbella and Stockholm. I wanted to bring all that knowledge back to the city, to my home. So what have you got in store for us? There’ a big demand for something new and fresh in Leicester, a lot of people are partying outside of the city and we want to bring them back. We’re going to be bringing some of that Marbella glamour and party spirit into Leicester with our new night Marbella Swag which will feature top Marbella DJs. So if you do go out partying at the likes of Tibu and Ocean club you’ll get to see their resident DJs in Leicester. We are also reinstating the legendary STUDIO SIXTYNINE parties in partnership with yourselves, bringing back all the glamour and the love from the Weavers days which we are really looking forward to. Expect to see some old and some new faces for what is sure to be an absolutely epic night on the 1st February 2014. We’re also thinking outside the box: our premier Saturday night is Boutique, a mash up of different music like deep house, house music, old school hip hop, pop and r&b. One thing you will find though is the very best DJ talent from in and around Leicester; for example Steve O’Donnell is our resident and we have Fitz here launching a truly

alternative and avant-garde Friday night with an indie edge. We’re working with some really premium brands such as Grey Goose and Moet as we have an amazing VIP table space all around the main dance-floor so you are not missing out on the action. It’s all about bringing back the swagger to Leicester and making people feel part of the whole club experience. Venom Nightclub is at 94-96 Belgrave Gate, Leicester, LE1 3GR Images by Steve Smith

REBEL BINGO IS BACK!

50

The nightlife phenomenon that is Rebel Bingo was back at Nottingham’s Rock City at the end of November and is certainly riding high, with way over 10,000 tickets sold internationally in 2013. For the uninitiated, Rebel Bingo is part game, part stage show, part club night and revolutionises the sleepy preserve of the over 60s, giving it a kaleidoscopic makeover. From humble beginnings in a tiny church hall basement, the spectacle spread to the clubs of Shoreditch, before taking on festivals including Secret Garden Party, Glastonbury and Bestival, spawning worldwide events in North America, Spain, Brazil and Portugal! Definitely not one to be missed when it’s next in town! To keep up to date with Rebel Bingo dates in 2014 go to www.rebelbingo.com

Birmingham became the fashion capital for one evening in October when fashionistas and media converged at the Penthouse at the Loft Lounge to celebrate the Midlands’ fashion scene at a glitzy awards ceremony hosted by the glamorous ITV Presenter, Lucy Kite. The Midlands Fashion Awards, which was supported by SIXTYNINE DEGREES, is now in their fifth year, act as a platform for independent, emerging and young designers from across the region to showcase their collections and 2013 did not disappoint, with a spread worthy of London Fashion Week.

MIDLANDS FASHION AWARDS WINNERS ANNOUNCED www.69-degrees.co.uk

The buzz of excitement for this highly anticipated event transformed a dreary day into a glamorous evening of high fashion, as over 250 guests mingled before the show, enjoying the shopping from local independent retailers before taking their places for the main fashion event. The atmosphere was electric as the judges spoke in hushed voices before handing the results to Lucy who announced them to huge cheers. Over 100 people gathered on Clarendon Park Road, canapé and champagne glass in hand, to watch Hollyoaks’ star Kieron Richardson officially open the city’s newest salon, Emma Brown Hair. The VIP party marked the opening of Emma’s first salon and the employment of her new stylist, Tom Osbourne. Kieron, who is a good friend of Emma’s, was only too happy to open the salon for her and gave her high praise, admitting Emma is “genuinely one of the top stylists around.” Born and raised in Clarendon Park, Emma is an award winning stylist, who also holds a Masters in Colour from Schwarzkopf; she learned her trade in the city at Barrie Stephen Hair and Mantini’s before returning to her roots to go it alone. PEACOCKING!

35 year old chef Phil Sharpe has had 20 years in the restaurant industry, with a career that has taken him all over the world before he fell in love with Leicester, helping city centre venue Maiyango achieve an AA Rosette and cooking for The Queen, Prince Philip and The Duchess of Cambridge during their visit to the city last year. Phil has now decided the time is right to go it alone and recently opened The White Peacock in a charming Grade 2 listed building on the historic New Walk in the heart of the city. Serving up contemporary international flavours, the launch was celebrated with sneakypeek tasters of the menu and, of course, copious amounts of Champagne and cocktails! We may just have found a new favourite restaurant! The White Peacock is @ 14 – 16 King Street, Leicester, LE1 6RJ. Tel: 0116 254 7663. www.the-white-peacock.co.uk

The Orange Tree pub, on Nottingham’s Shakespeare Street, marked its tenth anniversary and celebrated with its annual winter music festival, Orangefest. The summer sun and festival frolics may be a distant memory now, but the good folk at The Orange Tree managed to coax in a record number of customers by offering 2003 prices on a range of selected drinks during the event, plus vintage stalls, retro games, food and homemade gifts. Nine of the city’s most highly regarded up and coming acts played over two stages and the celebrations ran from 3pm right through to the early hours of the next day, making 2013’s Orangefest one of the best yet! Hed Kandi has bought both uplifiting house anthems and moodier deep house sounds to us on this compilation. Mixed by three residents, Stu Ojelay, Lucy Stone and Dan Van, The Mix is divided into bar, club and afterparty sounds. Featuring tracks and remixes from MK, Storm Queen, Josh Butler, Friend Within, Dusky, Freemasons, Noir, and many more. It’s the perfect party soundtrack to your night out. MW

DJ Sabo, owner and curator of the Sol Selectas label, has a knack for finding artists who can deliver a style of house that touches on elements of so many other musical styles while still retaining a core identity. This self titled EP sweeps through vibe laden latin sounds in ‘El Nomada’ into dub laden, tripped out house vibes at 108bm for the second track, Kingman Fire’. The final track, Hyptonize, is a disco tinged, mid tempo groover with sparse vocals and a solid baseline. Definitely the most dance floor track on the EP. DISGRACELAND

Collected is a complete and comprehensive set of impressive tracks from the Food Music label head honcho and Rinse FM radio host. Shadow Child sprang to life just 16 months ago, but already he’s become the go-to guy for the hottest dance-floor ammunition.. Featured on this compilation are remixes for a cross section of the most diverse artists at the moment including Hot Natured, Lianne La Havas, London Grammar, Sub Focus, Kill Frenzy, Yousef, Justin Martin, Drumsound and Bassline Smith and Hot Since 82. Finally, something from the left field of the Midlands. Yep, Birmingham’s Generation Bass drops another fascinating EP on us poor unsuspecting lot. Bellybelle, based out of Portland, Oregon has created an EP that I struggle to define in terms of genre. Yes it’s bass music, but it’s also Detroit techno. It’s got elements of minimal electronica infused with swirling elements of a futuristic cityscape. DISGRACELAND

Pacha, returns with Pacha Original House Anthems featuring 60 massive tunes across three discs, taking in the golden years of House music. House is the hottest sound right now and Pacha Original House Anthems provides the perfect retrospective, serving up a collection of the most iconic and well-loved anthems. Artists include Roger Sanchez, Wamdue Project, Olive, Cosmos, The Fog, Nightcrawlers, Crystal Waters, Kim English, Todd Terry, Alison Limerick and many more. MW

One year after Kris Menace’s collaborative album ‘Features’, the incredible maestro of all things electronica returns with quite possibly his most stunning body of work yet.. The sheer emotion ploughed into Kris’ beautifully crafted futuristic synth-scapes is omnipresent. Joining the dots between melancholy and joy to tranquility and agitation, every track oozes with passion. The Entirety Of Matter comprises of 12 instrumental tracks, each one with its very own futuristic gif animation. MW

With remixes from the uber talented Andrew Sinclair and Druthers and Drips, this is a really worthwhile EP to own. DISGRACELAND

After 10 years of co-writing, renowned US singer / songwriter Duane Harden steps into the spotlight to unveil his solo album, #NB4U (Naked Before You). #NB4U is a 12 track album, encapsulating the very essence of Duane Harden; unforgettable lyrics and contagious melodies. With collaborations from over twenty hugely talented artists and producers such as Pussycat Dolls’ Jessica Sutta, Ne-Yo’s protégée, Adrienne Bailon, David Guetta, Chris Willis, Bob Sinclar and Louie Vega to name a few. Yes, another sub genre prefixed by ‘Future’…. I know we see a lot of these as time goes by, but in this case I think the prefix is valid and it has been my musical muse for the last few weeks. The name, coined by Whistla in early 2009, refers to a style of garage that has all the edges taken off it. It really is a mixture of the more ethereal elements of drum and bass, with UK garage influenced percussion and elements of trap. It’s not club music, in the sense that it doesn’t bang, but it does combine such incredible emotion with small intense beats that I can’t help love this sound wherever I am and whatever I am doing. There is a wealth of it out there for free. If you like your Soundcloud, then check out www.soundcloud.com/futuregarage/ and let your ears explore. DISGRACELAND

Lady Gaga ARTPOP

57

“A celebration and a poetic musical journey” – Lady Gaga’s fourth album has been heralded by Mother Monster as the jewel in the crown of her artistic vision, but sadly it fails to be a royal event. Rather than demonstrating Gaga’s evolution as an artist, ARTPOP, reduces her to a caricature of her own creation as she haphazardly re-treads the same well-worn themes of sex, fashion and drugs to a schizophrenic soundtrack. It’s not all blood on the dancefloor, however, as some individual tracks have enough muscle to stand-alone – ‘Sexx Dreams’ is hedonistic techno and ‘Do What You Want’ featuring R Kelly is pop with a visceral pulse - but the tracks meshed together as one piece are more like a food fight than the slice of the perfect pop Gaga usually effortlessly serves. The record’s ultimate weakness is Gaga herself, as her fixation with her own celebrity casts an uncomfortable shadow. The scream of “Don’t you know my arse is famous!” on ‘Venus’ makes it clear ARTPOP is a world away from the universal call of ‘Just Dance’, which made Gaga everyone’s favourite pop star. MW

Brendan Benson – You Were Right

Blood Orange – Cupid Deluxe

Brendan Benson has been at it for a while, composing as well as producing for other artists. Recorded in Nashville, Benson’s sixth album You Were Right is well crafted pop - nicely arranged with smooth vocals. With all his experience in songwriting comes a level of class that cannot be dismissed. The only problem is ‘classy’ can border on boring and you’re left searching for some edge. There are moments of instrumental bliss, but overall this is better left playing in the background. KO

Kurt Vile - “It’s A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)” Kurt Vile and The Violators are back with an insightful escape to test your level of consciousness. The seven track vinyl digital EP, “It’s A Big World Out There (And I Am Scared)” is full of lengthy instrumentals and drifting rhyme. Following the release of Walking On A Pretty Daze in April, the tracks have been carefully selected and reworked. With one brand new track, ‘Feel My Pain’, it’s the perfect pace from start to finish - a pretty rendition with a healthy sprinkling of grime. KO

An entrepreneur of the RnB Dev Hynes - aka Blood Orange - is probably best known for his work behind the scene with artists such as Solange and Sky Ferreira. His sophomore album, Cupid Deluxe, showcases Hynes’ totally original talent to the max as he creates delicious sultry hooks that subconsciously transfix you upon first listening. The whole album is a journey through his crazy, genius soulful mind. Listen and then press repeat. SP

Little Mix – Salute Little Mix are back with an infectious RnB influenced second album, Salute, to get you standing to attention. The bubblegum pop of their debut is out and some serious Destiny’s Child ‘Survivor’ style anthems are marched in. If they weren’t your new favourite girl band they certainly will be now as lead single ‘Move’ and opener ‘Salute’ showcase their fierce female harmonies and new mature attitude. Go Girl Power! SP

HAIM. Big Love “The 16 year old me is freaking out the entire time and screaming!” Este, one third of Haim, is talking to Marie Wood from Munich where her band is currently on tour supporting Phoenix. It’s also where she’s trying in vain to conceal her excitement and adoration for her French tour buddies. “I’m totally fangirling on the inside and totally trying to be cool and not creepy on the outside” she says laughing. It’s exactly this type of unbridled enthusiasm - from their energetic live shows, playful banter and the unapologetic pop of their debut Days Are Gone – that’s made Haim everyone’s favourite new band. Exploding onto the scene at the beginning of the year when they won the coveted BBC Sound Of 2013 Este and her sisters, Daniele and Alana, appeared to be another overnight success, but Haim has actually been a lifetime in the making for the trio. Barely out of the nappies, the sisters started out playing in a band called Rockingham with their musician parents and in their teens, Este and Danielle flirted briefly with bubblegum pop in the cringe-worthy Valli Girls. When the bubble burst Este went on to study Ethnomusicology at university, whilst Danielle toured as a live musician in Julian Casablanca’s band. In 2006 the sisters regrouped to form Haim and started playing shows to just a handful of people around LA before finally getting their big break last year at SXSW - if Haim are an overnight success, it’s been a long night. It’s this journey that makes the sisters embrace every minute of their success. “We’re too busy having fun www.69-degrees.co.uk

to be grumpy.” Este says. “Being on tour we’re so energized just being out and being able to play.” And, playing live is something Haim have been doing non-stop - from supporting Florence And The Machine, playing the iTunes festival and headlining their own UK tour– it’s where people first fall in love with them as they throw every inch of themselves into each performance. “When we’re onstage it’s the only time when we’re truly able to let go” Este reveals. “We’re not thinking about being pretty or sounding clean…we’re thinking about having fun and letting the music come through us.” Unlike their contemporaries - who stand statically cool staring out vacantly into the crowd - Haim break all the rules by actively engaging with their fans, “I don’t think there needs to be a fourth wall when you’re performing” Este says. “I’ve never enjoyed shows where I feel like I’m an outsider”. And, that interaction doesn’t just end with the music as the band, especially Este, have become renowned for their brash onstage banter. “I welcome the heckle!” she exclaims proudly. “You know you have to be prepared – if you can’t stand the heat, you get out of the kitchen”. It’s something that saw the band on the end of a Twitter backlash when Este got chatty with the Prime Minister on The Andrew Marr show. “We finished the song and I was just like, ‘that one’s for you bud!’ I had no idea it would be such a big deal!” she explains. “For me, I was just having fun. I called him ‘DC’ and it was obvious I was trying to have fun with it, that’s like calling Barrack Obama ‘BO’, I mean come on!” After hitting every major festival this summer including four sets at Glastonbury (“It was really magical for us …I will never forget that”), the band finally took time out in September to drop their debut album, Days Are Gone, a record that takes the energy of their live shows and channels it into big beat RnB, sleek 80s hooks and heavenly harmonies to create timeless pop. It’s a sound that Este attributes to those times growing-up back in California. “We got most of our inspiration from Los Angeles radio”, she explains. “It’s very specific as

when you’re an Angelino you spend 85% of your time in a car so the radio better be good”. The record met a rapturous reception and has seen them being compared to Peter Gabriel, Prince and Haim’s personal favourite, Fleetwood Mac. It’s something Este’s still trying to get her head round. “Obviously, we’re big fans of them but to say that we sound like them is a lot.” Their debut may still be wet behind the ears, but the band is already thinking about their next album. “We’re always writing and we’re always staying creative and trying things out in soundcheck…our iPhones are our friends”, Este says. “I want to put out a record when we’re ready, but obviously as soon as we can.”

We’re too busy having fun to be grumpy

2014 sees Haim doing what they do best and continuing their worldwide tour. With such a busy schedule, are they at risk of burnout? “The thing is, even when we’re working we make the most of it and we have a lot of fun” Este reassures. “It’s not like we’re in dire need of a break. I think, if anything, we want to keep touring and keep going”, before adding most importantly, “because this is really fun for us.” Haim is at HMV Institute, Birmingham on 5 December and Rock City, Nottingham on 4 March 2014. www.haimtheband.com

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET

Forget Russians, posh Brits or middle eastern terrorists. The newest movie bad guys on the block wear expensive Armani suits, work in shiny high-rise offices and spend every waking minute working out how best to f**k you out of your money. The Wolf Of Wall Street is the depressingly true story of Jordan Belfort, a slimy US stockbroker who spent just shy of two years in jail after being found guilty of mass fraud, making obscene amounts of money by defrauding investors and spending the cash on drugs, booze and debauchery. So how to make a story centred around a vile, self-obsessed human being who only wants to make more and more money appeal to an audience? Simple. First, you enlist Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter to adapt Belfort’s memoir, then you get legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese to direct it, and then you get Leonardo DiCaprio to play Belfort. Then you surround Leo with a mouth-watering cast that includes Jonah Hill as his bucktoothed partner in crime and a newly reinvigorated Matthew McConaughey as Belfort’s slightly daffy mentor. The running time is set to be close to three hours, but if the pedigree of the talent involved is anything to go by, that should be a bonus rather than any kind of negative. Expect Belfort’s rise to be a crazy, darkly comic ride of scantily clad marching bands, besuited chimpanzees and midgets used as lawn darts, followed swiftly by a rapid descent as the FBI zero in on his criminal activities. Prepare to be enthralled, appalled and everything in between.

Anchorman 2

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom

Grudge Match

A sequel to Anchorman would have been unthinkable upon the film’s initial release when it bombed quicker than Pearl Harbour. Yet the strange nature of cultdom mean that it has since become a bona fide, eminently quotable hit, meaning Ron Burgundy and his super newsteam return this Christmas with another explosion of scattershot silliness and surreal setpieces. Special cameos are set to include Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, Sacha Baron Cohen and…er, Kanye West.

Idris Elba trumps a number of bigger name actors to bag the tricky role of Nelson Mandela in this long-gestating biopic, based on the former South African president’s memoirs. There’s a hell of a lot to cram in, whether it be Mandela joining the ANC, his imprisonment or his later political career. Early reviews suggest though that director Justin Chadwick and writer William Nicholson have done a sterling job. Doesn’t hurt having Elba either.

Although US stand-up Chris Tucker has now semiretired, we have the highly irritating likes of Kevin Hart to take his screechy, annoying place. And boy, does he screech his way through the trailer for this illadvised comedy featuring Sly Stallone and Robert De Niro as archaic boxers who come out of retirement for the inevitable One Last Bout. Expect lots of ‘hilarious’ references to Rocky and Raging Bull that will die before they’ve even left the actors’ lips.

Inside Llewyn Davis

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit

Robocop

All is right with the world, because the Coen brothers are back with yet another perfectly pitched slice of cinematic heaven. There aren’t too many of the usual Coen performers in this one (barring John Goodman), the lion’s share of the film instead going to relative unknown Oscar Isaac, who gives a career-making performance as a down-on-hisluck folk singer songwriter in 1960s New York. It’s amusingly deadpan, it’s subtly moving…it’s basically brilliant.

Currently looking to rival Bond for the amount of different actors who’ve played him, Tom Clancy creation Jack Ryan reaches his fourth incarnation with Shadow Recruit, generic pretty boy Chris Pine is now tasked with saving the world after taking the mantle from Ben Affleck, who is busy prepping his broody face for Batman vs. Superman. Bad guy duties are filled by Kenneth Branagh (also directing) as an evil Russian, and it’s the first Jack Ryan feature not to be adapted from an actual Clancy novel.

Yep, now they’ve remade Robocop. Anybody want to bet all the social satire of Paul Verhoeven’s original has been ironed out in favour of 12A-friendly fight scenes? Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman dons the metal suit (now black, instantly irking the diehard fans), while Michael Keaton hams it up as the head of evil conglomerate OmniCorp. At least 4 people have tackled the screenplay (that doesn’t include uncredited writers), which isn’t exactly promising.

Ghost The Musical 17 December – 5 January @ New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham

13 December @ Quad, Derby Producer/DJ Staycj Pepper curates a night dedicated to live electronic and will be bringing KADE to Derby this December. The duo creates improvised electronic beatscapes using only a laptop and bass guitar to lay down solid grooves with subtle elements of introspection. The music is organic, dark and twisted and their live shows are unique in that no song is ever performed twice, instead they feed off the energy in the room and the vibe of the evening.

Sarah Millican: Home Bird 14 - 15 December @ Nottingham Royal Concert Hall

After spending time on the West End and Broadway, the musical adaptation of the 90s Oscar winning classic began its national tour this year. The film captured the hearts and romantic imagination of a generation (whilst simultaneously managing to make a potter’s wheel sexy), and the stage adaptation has experienced phenomenal success since its creation in 2011. After being attacked and killed, Sam is stuck between this world and the next, forced to warn his lover, Molly, of the danger she is in through a phoney psychic.

The British Comedy Award’s Queen of Comedy Sarah Millican is determined to put down some roots and now even has a cat. She’s decided to give up the party scene (Ann Summers), ease off on the drinking (fizzy pop) and settle down (take her bra off). Home Bird is the Geordie lass’ third national tour, and Millican will be teaching audiences exactly what they need to take on a dirty weekend, the easiest way to blend in at posh restaurants and how to make pensioners to swear. Join her at Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall this December for some hilarious domestic bliss!

The former students, many of whom are now globally renowned artists and designers, will illustrate the impact of the school on the visual arts and creative industries nationally and internationally. Some, including artist Jon Burgerman are producing new artworks for the exhibition while others, such as Simon Starling and Paul Kaye, will be taking part in talks and discussions offering insights into their work. The School of Art & Design started life as the Nottingham Government School of Design in 1843 and was one of several institutions set up by the Government to improve the design skills of industrial workers.

Some of the many artists taking part in the exhibition include: *Hazel and Keith Albarn (Intermediate Art 1961,) Visual artists and former art teachers (also parents of musician Damon Albarn) *Jon Burgerman (BA Hons Fine Art, 2001), Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Jon’s creations include colourful and uncategorisable doodles, squiggles and funny little animals that grace everything from I-Phones to Nike trainers.

The show will feature canvasses by one of the school’s earliest local students, Dame Laura Knight, who gained a place in 1890 at just 13. After studying painting she went on to become the first woman in England to be elected to the Royal Academy.

LAST WORD Hot from winning Independent Designer of the year at this year’s prestigious Midlands Fashion Awards, we talk to Derby based designer Fazane Malik about making the leap of faith and launching her own label before her 30th birthday.

I studied in Nottingham, a BTEC in Fashion Clothing at Clarendon College before going on to do a degree in Fashion at Derby University. The course included a year in industry so I was lucky enough to go off and work with two top designers in Australia for a year. One of Sydney’s most prominent contemporary fashion designers Akira Isogawa and another one in Melbourne called Gwendolynne who specialises in high end couture dresses.

Uni I wanted to go and set up my brand straight away, but I realised I needed to get experience and meet everyone in the industry. I got so many good contacts from my old job so it was definitely worth staying those eight years. I started my brand about two years ago whilst still working and after a year I thought I need to go for this now, so gave up the day job last Christmas and have been running this business on my own for a year now.

After graduating I was really lucky and got a job straight away and went and worked for a big clothing manufacturer in Market Harborough for eight years. We used to make all the collections for Paul Smith, Jaeger, Monsoon and M&S, so a lot of high end high street. My job took in the whole process from start to finish, working with the designers to make sure they got the right product, I’d do all the specs, instruct the factory how to make them all and negotiate prices. I was the face of the account and would see it all the way through which was amazing experience for when I started my own business; I already had a great insight into production, price and costing.

I really admire Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood; they didn’t have any formal training they’re just really good at what they do and are naturally talented. I don’t think people realise how hard they worked, Vivienne Westwood was working on her label for 10 years before it got successful. They’re an inspiration to me, I know it’s going to take a long time but I’m ready for that.

I always wanted to work for myself; when I left www.69-degrees.co.uk

I love having my studio here in the Midlands, I’ve been and done the whole London thing but it’s more cost effective for me to have a studio here and the capital is so close by train I can easily nip down for meetings. We’ve got some truly talented people here in the Midlands and

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great photographers and stylists; I was so proud to have my work recognised amongst them at the Midlands Fashion Awards. It was like a well done to myself for working so hard. That’s the best thing that’s happened to me this year! Moving forward the main focus is to get more wholesale accounts. The brand is available through boutiques but it can be quite hard to get an established store to take on a new brand. My products sell a lot better in stores than online because people can see and feel the quality and realise how well made it is and how good the cut is. I focus on a lot of detail, some of it on the inside and you just can’t see that online. I aim to create pieces that will last season after season and can be worn with lots of different outfits in different ways. We’re aimed at really busy women who don’t always have to time to do a lot of styling; a bit like myself to be honest!
