She had started working with Ericka Williams as her production assistant, & as her social media manager for Boss Lady Chronicles Radio Show on NjWebRadio in 2015. Then branched off into television where she was coproducer of the show Circles by Ericka Williams. Soneil Lindsay appointed her as assistant manager of the radio station (NjWebRadio), where she took charge of production for 7 different shows. ROBIN SHAW

www.jerseyturntupent.com

obin George Baxter Shaw aka Robin Shaw is 26 years old and hails from a village called Bressingham in South Norfolk (the East part of the UK). After attending local primary school, he began secondary school and followed his interests in Drama and English Literature. It was at this time that his love for performing started with a talent show he entered in 2009 as a solo street dancer. Street dancing became something he pursued more of as well as his interest in music. He is self-taught and has competed at several talent shows across East Anglia in the UK. He has been fortunate to appear as an extra in a scene of a movie called ‘Street Dance 3D’ which included dance acts Diversity and George Sampson. In 2014, he entered as a contestant on the TV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ as a street dancer. While he only got through to the producer’s stages, the feeling of competing on stage especially, to hip/hop music gave him more confidence and an appreciation for the rhythm in music. 46

After connecting with an agency, he was contacted by ‘Regent Street Artists’ who were then called ‘Downtown Artists’. This afforded him the opportunity to audition for a singing/ recording contract of two songs. Over the years, he had developed a passion for writing stories, poems, lyrics etc., so the opportunity to record/write his own songs was something he fully embraced. The audition was in March 2016 and was held in the same studio as where the icon David Bowie recorded in his early parts of his career. A month later, he began his work there and his potential to make a mark in the industry was birthed. The studio became his home

away from home. Soon thereafter, he was introduced and connected with his current producer Chris Hall. Instantly there was a musical chemistry and an understanding from the very first recording session. His interest in singing and writing grew. His lyric books got bigger as he would write down every day rhymes from all types of life situations ranging from family, relationships to the jobs he’d worked. His first two songs were called ‘Time Is Your Own’ released in June 2017, and ‘Hair Clip’, released in August 2017. ‘Time

Is Your Own’ is a reflection and observation of the importance of time and embracing the life we live. The title was inspired by an unassuming customer who came into the shop where he worked. ‘Hair Clip’ was based on a romantic experience. Both have an Indie/Pop sound. The importance of lyric content and imagery is always at the heart of his music. In July 2017, the company offered him the opportunity to continue to work and make more music with Chris. Their third record entitled ‘Routine of Love’, was released in May 2018. This song has a mix of a classical/hip-hop feel and focuses on an elderly couple of whom he briefly 47

years ago. The song also addresses the sensitive context of Dementia and has a 1950s feel to the story. From the moment ‘Time Is Your Own’ was released, Robin has been fortunate to have had songs played on a variety of radio and TV platforms. He’s also had a variety of press, TV and radio interviews both locally and across Europe. His confidence has grown in radio and TV interviews and he has developed a musical reputation in his area. He has also been very fortunate to be featured in a magazine called ‘Cover Revista’ all the way in Mexico in August this year. With a professional illustrator as a personal friend, together they collaborate on the artwork design for all his labels. Robin’s fourth song is nearly finished and in the production stages which will be released in 2019 and is entitled ‘P45’. The term derives from a form you get to show proof of employment. This song has more of a hip-hop feel, which is a genre that he desires to explore more. To this day, he is proud of

48

being self-taught and successful in this industry. It serves as further proof that determination and hard work can get you on the path you want to be. Robin’s songs can be found on many platforms including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer and Soundcloud. He attributes and is grateful for his success from his family including his Mum, Dad, brother and close friends for their continued support and backing in every step he’s taken on his journey from dancing to recording his own songs. Look out for some awesome things coming from Durell & his movement pushing independent music forward! From all of the networking and traveling you have done to get to this point in your career, what is the number one advice you would provide to someone following your footsteps? The number one piece of advice I would provide to someone following in my footsteps is really simple and that is learn the importance of investing in people. The entertainment industry is really a people industry and the fact is people have to genuinely like you in order for them to want to help you in any way. Being from New York and now currently residing in Florida, where do you feel is home for you the most? The place where I feel at home the most is Florida. I have been in 54

Orlando Florida for 25 years, which is more than half my life. Most of my family still currently resides in New York but I myself don’t really know the city because I left there as a 7 year old boy in ‘93. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way though looking back at it. Where do you imagine Double N Management & Marketing Group to be in 5 years? When I look ahead in the future for my company Double N Management & Marketing Group, I think about the fact that I’ve designed my company to not be reliant upon the success of artists that

I manage but more about educating indie creatives. I think that’s what’s the most important thing for the indie music community is learning the business behind music. In 5 years my brand will be more known for writing books and speaking I believe just as much or even more rather than how many artists my company is managing. What keeps you going when you feel like giving up? What keeps me going when I feel like giving up is the fact that what I’m doing is truly about passion. Passion and purpose in my opinion

is what I would imagine has kept most people and entrepreneurs going when things get difficult. I recently saw an interview with music/ business mogul Dame WE ARE JERSEY MAGAZINE| Issue 27

When I work with clients I’m usually providing a service that isn’t really required for me to be involved with them on a day-today basis. If I decide to work with an artist on a within the role of management then I refer to them as my artist. As my artist I’m involved within the day-to-day career in helping them to build and succeed in accomplishing their goals. At the moment I’m currently only working with one artist right now so it’s been pretty easy to balance my professional career and personal life. term? I realized that this is what I wanted to do long term because at the core of what this industry is predicated on is people and relationships. I know without the shadow of a doubt that this is what I’m a master at doing. When I get to help artists pursue their lifelong dream it genuinely means so much to me. As I mentioned earlier in this interview it’s truly about me pursuing my passion. I truly believe when your passion and your why are both side by side and connected, no matter what obstacles lay ahead you will always find a way to push through. I always tell people that when you are walking within your purpose things will always work out. Where can all of our readers follow your journey? Your readers can follow my journey on social media.
