Hurricane Ike Revisited

Gilchrist, Tx September 15, 2008

with Kindness One Random Act of Kindness at a Time

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been two years since Hurricane Ike roared up Galveston Bay but there are still a lot of reminders lying around. It was the third costliest hurricane ever to make landfall in the United States. It was the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season. It was a Cape Verde-type hurricane, as it started as a tropical disturbance near Africa at the end of August. On Sept. 1, 2008, it became a tropical storm west of the Cape Verde islands. By the early morning hours of Sept. 4,

Ike was a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. ] That made it the most intense Atlantic storm of 2008. Ike passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands as Category 4, with winds 135 mph on September 7. Moving west along Cuba, it made 2 landfalls as a Category 4 hurricane on September 7 and a Category 1 hurricane on Sept. 9. Ike made its final landfall near Galveston, Texas as a strong Category 2 hurricane, with Category 5 equivalent storm surge, on Sept. 13, 2008, at 2:10 a.m. CDT. Hurricane-force winds extended 120 miles from the center.

“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy.” -- Winston Churchill

Ike was blamed for at least 195 deaths. Of these, 74 were in Haiti, which was already trying to recover from the impact of three storms earlier that year: Fay, Gustav, and Hanna. In the United States, 112 people were killed, and 23 are still missing. Due to its immense size, Ike caused devastation from the Louisiana coastline all the way to the Kenedy County, Texas region near Corpus Christi, Texas. In addition, Ike caused flooding and significant damage along the Mississippi coastline and the Florida Panhandle. Damages from Ike in U.S. coastal and inland areas are estimated at $29.6 billion, with additional damage of $7.3 billion in Cuba (the costliest storm ever CONTINUED, PG. 6

A couple of years ago, a friend and colleague of mine, Dale Ware and I attempted to start a “kindness initiative” as a commercial endeavor. The idea was to coach certain business institutions to lead the way in promoting Random Acts of Kindness among their employees and customers, making a name for themselves while improving the quality of life in surrounding communities. The economy was already beginning to tank and though several companies liked the idea, they did not have funds for such a promotion. We did send out ideas and reminders for a while and the recipients thanked us for helping create a positive attitude in an otherwise negative environment. If anything, the environment is even more negative now. While we are not suffering like other areas of the country, business has definitely slowed, sales are down, belts are being tightened and people are frustrated and worried, so let’s make a sincere and ongoing effort to encourage kindness in our daily dealings with others. By definition, “A Random Act of Kindness is a purportedly selfless act performed by a person or persons wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual or in some cases even an animal. There will generally be no reason other than to make people smile or be happier. Either spontaneous or planned in advance, random acts of kindness are encouraged by various communities and should be by everyone.” “Pay It Forward” is the idea of doing a good deed for someone and instead of them paying you back, they Pay It Forward or do good deeds for three other people. These, in turn, would do good deeds for three more each. Theoretically these acts are spread exponentially throughout the world. It’s like a multi-level marketing distribution system CONTINUED, BOTTOM PG. 5

Outfinal of respect Yorkers’ sensitivities, he proposed setting aside state land in downtown Manhattan away from Ground Zero for the Islamic center if they agreed to relocate. They refused. Reconciliation and healing are all a sham, and the mosque will only serve to remind the public that the atrocities of 9/11 were not perpetrated by Eskimos.” SIGN & DATE HERE The location of the mosque is really only significant in understanding the world that the people who killed us desire. It’s not that the people building the mosque or the place is a problem. It’s that the Taliban and Al Qaeda would see it as a trophy. THEY would see it as the place Allah gave to them during a great victory. THEY would see it as a place that they wanted to worship (the worst of the worst terrorists would want to worship there as much or more than Al Aqsa). So let’s not get sucked into the concept that this is a bridge to peace. It’s obviously just the opposite and the people supporting its construction have aleady proven to be antiAmerican through their own statements on national television, essentially blaming the attack on the policies of the United States. Tell them to build it elsewhere. We don’t need this particular type bridge to understanding and we don’t believe that’s what it is about either. If they truly care about our feelings, they’ll move it. If not, they’ll continue to fight for it at that location and reveal their real motivation.

How to Manage Bookmarks With Internet Explorer The ability to store your favorite Web sites on an Internet browser is called bookmarking. When you bookmark a Web site, you are adding its URL to a list of favorites that you can refer to again and again any time you want to visit them. With Internet Explorer, there is no limit to the number of bookmarks you can make. Knowing how to manage your bookmarks comes in handy when you start to accumulate a lot of them.

Keep Your Bookmarks in Order 1. Engage Internet Explorer on your computer. Go to the ‘Favorites’ heading at the top of the browser window. 2. Click on ‘Add to Favorites.’ This will bookmark the Web page you are currently on. You can do this with any Web page you visit that you wish to save. 3. Organize your bookmarks. Go to the ‘Favorites’ heading again and click on ‘Organize Favorites.’ This will give you the opportunity to create categories for your bookmarks.

Most buying decisions are emotional, rather than logical. Emotions are often influenced by the sub-conscious mind which best responds to repetition. Repetition is an important part of advertising. Why? Because, it is through repetition that you establish your credibility, establish brand familiarity, become the first thought when a need for your type of product or service arises, etc. You have to give the advertising a chance to work.

WHY ADVERTISE? Shoppers don’t have the store loyalty they once did. You must advertise to keep pace with your competition. TO REACH NEW CUSTOMERS. Your market changes constantly. New families in the area mean new customers to reach. People earn more money, which means changes in lifestyles and buying habits. YOUR AUDIENCE IS A MOVING TARGET WHEN SHOULD YOU ADVERTISE? Always! Good times and bad you’re trying to sell your products and services no matter what is happening to the economy. Hard times are not the times to quit advertising. Advertising should be the last item cut from your budget.

Well, it’s “Talk Like a Pirate” time again and once again it will be held at Katie’s Bar in Bacliff. It’s been going on about 8 years now. We started it at the Buccanneer Bar naturally but when it got blowed down, we moved to Katies. So put on your best pirate costume and best pirate voice (male and female) and come participate. It starts about 1PM on Saturday, Sept 18th. -------------------------You may or may not have noticed that we try to use the month of the issue as a theme to some extent, especially in our cover date logo and in our libations. They may not be exact but there is a relationship.. Last month, August, we used the Dog Days cartoon by the issue number and the Leo astrological symbol. So this month when you check out the Libations for September, see if you can make the connection. Some are obvious. Some may be a stretch. September is Honey Month, also Apple Month, Piano Month and “Be Kind to Editors and Writers” Month..... Really! ******************* We’re going to try to be kinder in our day to day lives and encourage you to do the same. See the RAK article on page one. A good deed a day will make you feel better about yourself and the world around you.

Robert Ringer’s 20 Life-Guiding Principles Long before the phenomenon of conservative talk radio made its appearance, and many years before it was popular to do so, Robert Ringer championed the cause of freedom and free enterprise in a calm and rational manner that captured the hearts and minds of millions of liberty-loving people nationwide. After a string of three consecutive #1 bestsellers in the late seventies (two of which have been listed by The New York Times among the 15 best-selling motivational books of all time), he became a prominent voice for liberty throughout America. His friend and close ally, former Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon, summed up Robert Ringer’s impact on America when he passionately stated: “[You are] a courageous, dedicated and brilliant American patriot who supports and, more importantly, fights to preserve the fundamental principles and ideas that built our beautiful country. My deep gratitude for all your support and assistance, and everything you are doing to preserve my children’s freedom.” As a staunch defender of freedom and the free-enterprise system, Ringer firmly believes that a person’s political philosophy is inextricably intertwined with his business and personal success — that the same understanding of human nature and how the world works is necessary for success in every area of life. KINDNESS for kindness and good deeds. Acts of kindness are actually selfish acts in that the pleasure of performing them will give you untold satisfaction. Additionally, it will probably help your business, make you a more popular person and possibly even help you find or keep a mate. The qualities of kindness and consideration rank high when someone is evaluating you as a potential vendor, employee, friend or life companion. Interestingly, Dale and I discovered that performing acts

of kindness is also an effective means of changing your own attitude because you experience an instant transformation in how you feel about your current state of mind which in turn influences how you act and react to other stimuli. In other words, since you’ll be feeling better about yourself, you’ll probably also be feeling better about what’s happening around you. In 1982, a California peace activist Ann Herbert scribbled on a placemat in a restaurant “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.”

The words left an impression on a fellow diner, who later told the phrase to others. The words inspired much thought and conversation, including the movie “Pay it Forward” in 2000. “How do we change the world? One single act of random kindness at a time.” - Morgan Freeman in the movie ‘Evan Almighty’

Ike was the third costliest Atlantic hurricane of all time, behind Hurricane Andrew of 1992 and Hurricane Katrina of 2005. The hurricane also resulted in the largest evacuation of Texans in that state’s history. It also became the largest searchand-rescue operation in U.S. history.

Ike made U.S. landfall at Galveston, Texas, on Sept. 13 at 2:10am CDT, as a high Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 mph. The 2:00 am NHC advisory cited tropical storm and hurricane force winds extending 275 miles and 120 miles, respectively, from the center. Around 3:00 a.m. , it passed over San Leon, Texas and made its final landfall near Baytown, Texas around 4:00 a.m. On Sept. 10, U.S. President George W. Bush made an emergency declaration for Texas in advance of Hurricane Ike, making more federal help available for preparations and evacuations. State rural water associations activated mutual aid networks to prepare for the landfall of Hurricane Hanna and Hurricane Ike while still providing assistance to areas affected by Hurricane Gustav. The Texas Rural Water Association held meetings with state agencies on Tuesday, September 9, to plan for landfall along the Texas gulf coast. On Sept. 11, forecasting models began to show Ike making landfall just south of Galveston. City Manager Steven LeBlanc late Wednesday issued a mandatory evacuation order for the low lying west end of Galveston Island.] Later, the mandatory evacuation order was extended to the entire island of Galveston, as well as low-lying areas around Houston, Texas. Residents evacuating ahead of Ike were received by emergency workers in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The fleeing residents were provided a place of refuge, medical treatment, and provisions until Ike had passed. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and submerged New Orleans, the DFW area became a

place for New Orleans residents to recover from the storm’s destructive forces. The DFW area was still providing relief to evacuees from Gustav earlier in the 2008 hurricane season when it began preparations for evacuating residents of coastal Texas prior to Ike’s arrival. Also on Sept. 11, at 8:19 p.m., the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, TX issued a strongly worded bulletin, regarding storm surge along the shoreline of Galveston Bay. The bulletin advised that residents living in single-family homes in some parts of coastal Texas may face “certain death” if they did not heed orders to evacuate. As many as 40 percent of Galveston’s citizens may have not paid attention to the warnings. It was feared to be much the same in Port Arthur, and it was predicted that low-lying areas between Morgan City, Louisiana and Baffin Bay, Texas, particularly those areas east of Ike’s projected eye landfall would experience the greatest damage from storm surges of up to 20 feet. Waves at sea were expected to be higher, up to 70 feet according to computer simulations.

The price of gas increased in the expectation of damage to some of the numerous oil refineries along the South Texas coast, or at least delays in production from the oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. On the morning of September 13, 2008, the eye of Hurricane Ike approached the upper Texas coast, making landfall at 2:10 a.m. CDT over the east end of Galveston Island, with a high storm surge, and travelled north up Galveston Bay, along the east side of Houston (see storm-path image). People in low-lying areas who had not heeded evacuation orders, in single-family one- or two-story homes, were warned by the weather service that they may “face certain death” from the overnight storm surge, a statement that turned out to be true for some unable to evacuate. In regional Texas towns, electrical power began failing on September 12 before 8 p.m., leaving millions without power To Page 12

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, one of 12 children of Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer, and Avie Lee Parton (née Owens). Dolly grew up on a run-down farm in Locust Ridge, TN. At 12, she was appearing on Knoxville TV and, at 13, she was already recording on a small label and appearing at the Grand Ole Opry. After graduating from high school in Sevier County, Tennessee, in 1964, she moved to Nashville to launch her career as a country singer. She fell in love with Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving business; they got married on May 30, 1966 (and they are still together). The next year, Dolly’s singing caught the attention of Porter Wagoner. He hired Dolly to appear on his program, “The Porter Wagoner Show” (1960). Dolly stayed with the show for 7 years, their duets became famous, and she appeared with his group at the Grand Ole Opry; she also toured and sold records. By the time her hit “Joshua” reached #1 in 1970, her fame had overshadowed Porter’s, and she struck out on her own, though still recording duets with him. She left him for good to become a solo artist in 1974. Dolly gained immense popularity as a singer/songwriter. Dolly won numerous Country Music Association awards (1968, 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976). This petite (5’0”) beauty was a natural for television and, by the mid1970s, Dolly was appearing frequently on TV specials and talk shows. Dolly then got her own show, aptly titled “Dolly” (1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first Grammy award: Best Female Country Vocal Performance, for her song “Here You Come Again”. Dolly’s movie debut was in Nine to Five (1980), where she got an Oscar nomination for writing the title tune, and also Grammy awards 2 and 3, Best Country Song, and Best Female Country Vocal Performance for _”Nine to Five”. Dolly got more fame for appearing in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), and in Rhinestone (1984) with the song “Tennessee Homesick Blues”. She is the head of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media empire, and, in 1986, she founded Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, celebrating her Smokey Mountain upbringing. She appeared as herself in the “Dolly” (1987) TV series. In 1988, she won another Grammy award: Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals, for “Trio”. Dolly was in the acclaimed picture Steel Magnolias (1989) with Julia Roberts, and went on to appear in 15 movies and TV-movies for the 1990s, and of course garnered more Country Music Association awards. In 2000, Dolly received her 5th Grammy award: Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. She also released a Bluegrass Album. Dolly is known for beautiful songs such as “Coat of Many Colors” and “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”. Dolly said in an interview, “My music is what took me everywhere I’ve been and everywhere I will go. It’s my greatest love. I can’t abandon it. I’ll always keep making records”.

Galveston Island’s Lost Oaks Tree Sculpture

September 13, 2008 Hurricane Ike visited Galveston Island with devastating results for the people and infrastructure. 40,000 trees were killed leaving the landscape bare. In an unusual and creative action, Galveston Island Conservancy member Donna Leibbert found chain saw scuptures from the dead trees in the historic district. What was a terrivle eyesore and reminder aof the horrors of Hurricane Ike now is a charming visual sight to the eyes! If you are visiting Galveston soon, you must tour the city to see these beautiful workds of art. These are some of the more than 20 tree scultures scattered throughout the island. They are depicted in a Power Point presentation created by Jack Cross of Texas City. The sculptors were James Phillips (Clear Lake); Doyle Lewis (Richmond, IN); and Earl Jones (Texas City). The entire presentation can be viewed at this website: http://www.guidrynews.com/ spotlightStory.aspx?id=21

The funds raised will be used to help create a limited edition copy of the sculpture, “Most Precious Offering.” Statement of Purpose for Most Precious Offering The sculpture was created by Texas artist, Saundra Whiddon to honor the courage and sacrifice of all parents who from infancy, held and nurtured the soldier and now, for the sake of others, must let him go. In the final goodbye, the parents exhibit purpose and unspeakable selflessness. The infant is portrayed as vulnerable and yet secure in the hands of his parents. He is swaddled in the American Flag. The hand of his father lifts him up with great determination and purpose; using his strength to hold the head of the infant securely for the entire journey. The mother’s hand, by contrast, forms a nurturing pose as she reluctantly and slowly lifts her child toward the heavens. The infant is simultaneously emitting a cry of victory and of separation with which the artist hopes to show the ambivalence even the bravest soldier feels when called to war. He clutches the American Flag against his chest with one hand. With the other hand, he raises his flag toward the Creator showing the courage that soldiers exhibit when they dare to reach higher than others!

All I ask is a chance to prove that money can’t make me happy.

The sculpture has won First Place in the Daughters of the Revolution Heritage Contest National competition and was displayed in Constitution Hall; it has been placed at the footbridge from Purdue University to Lafayette, Indiana’s Rhiele Plaza next to the 9-11 sculpture. It has also been placed in the historical Armstrong Cemetery which is the oldest cemetery west of the Mississippi. This limited edition sculpture is known as “Bryan’s Place” and honors fallen soldier, Marine Cpl. Bryan Scott Wilson. “Most Precious Offering” has served as a point of healing for veterans and the families of fallen soldiers; Gold Star mother, Brenda Wilson said, “I had given up wanting to be here and asked God to just take me home, but in His infinite wisdom, he sent me an angel, artist, Saundra Whiddon. Thank you Saundra for giving me something to focus on and for all the road trips to choose granite, the meetings at the corporate office (better known as Starbuch’s at Payless Grocery) and most of all for giving me a reason to live again.” Parents of fallen soldiers and soldiers from all wars, particularly Vietnam vets who were never properly honored, have found this piece of art to be a place of restoration and healing. Since 9-11 our armed forces have served with unwavering loyalty to the cause of keeping our homeland safe! We salute their service and the service of all soldiers past and present. The artist hopes to help ensure we will “Never Forget” that “Freedom is Never Free”, the cost is the lives of our best and bravest. Contact person for donations for auction and/or cash donations to assist in the production of this sculpture is Deborah Haver - 463-2181.

PIRATE BEHAVIOR

One must remember that pirates are thieves, not the romantic scoundrels we’ve come to lionize through history and film. Though the more recognized pirate bands such as Jean Lafitte’s, existed under a Code of Conduct, this was a law unto themselves, much like that covering Mafia behavior. This Code served to govern their behavior on land and sea between raids. It did not govern their behavior during piratical acts, in fact, the more vicious and outrageous they acted, the more effective their raids were. Even Blackbeard’s lighting of his beard was to inspire fear in his victims and encourage surrender with a minimum of bloodshed or opposition to the pirates. One of the best known sets of pirate articles was set down by the famous Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts in 1720. I. Every man has a vote in affairs of moment; has equal title to the fresh provisions, or strong liquors, at any time seized, and may use them at pleasure, unless a scarcity (not an uncommon thing among them) makes it necessary, for the good of all, to vote a retrenchment. II. Every man to be called fairly in turn, by list, on board of prizes because, (over and above their proper share) they were on these occasions allowed a shift of clothes: but if they defrauded the company to the value of a dollar in plate, jewels, or money, marooning was their punishment. If the robbery was only betwixt one another, they contented themselves with slitting the ears and nose of him that was guilty, and set him on shore, not in an uninhabited place, but somewhere, where he was sure to encounter hardships. III. No person to game at cards or dice for money. IV. The lights and candles to be put out at eight o’clock at night: if any of the crew, after that hour still remained inclined for drinking, they were to do it on the open deck. V. To keep their piece, pistols, and cutlass clean and fit for service. VI. No boy or woman to be allowed amongst them. If any man were to be found seducing any of the latter sex, and carried her to sea, disguised, he was to suffer death; (so that when any fell into their hands, as it chanced in the Onslow, they put a sentinel immediately over her to prevent ill consequences from so dangerous an instrument of division and quarrel; but then here lies the roguery; they contend who shall be sentinel, which happens generally to one of the greatest bullies, who, to secure the lady’s virtue, will let none lie with her but himself.) VII. To desert the ship or their quarters in battle, was punished with death or marooning. VIII. No striking one another on board, but every man’s quarrels to be ended on shore, at sword and pistol. (The quarter-master of the ship, when the parties will not come to any reconciliation, accompanies them on shore with what assistance he thinks proper, and turns the disputant back to back, at so many paces distance; at the word of command, they turn and fire immediately, (or else the piece is knocked out of their hands). If both miss, they come to their cutlasses, and then he is declared the victor who draws the first blood.) IX. No man to talk of breaking up their way of living, till each had shared one thousand pounds. If in order to this, any man should lose a limb, or become a cripple in their service, he was to have eight hundred dollars, out of the public stock, and for lesser hurts, proportionately. X. The captain and quartermaster to receive two shares of a prize: the master, boatswain, and gunner, one share and a half, and other officers one and quarter. XI. The musicians to have rest on the Sabbath Day, but the other six days and nights, none without special favour.

In Galveston, by 4 p.m. on September 12, the rising storm surge began overtopping the 17ft Galveston Seawall, which faces the Gulf of Mexico; waves had been crashing along the seawall earlier, from 9 a.m. Although Seawall Boulevard is elevated above the shoreline, many areas of town slope down behind the seawall to the lower elevation of Galveston Island. Even though there were advance evacuation plans, Mary Jo Naschke, spokesperson for the city of Galveston, estimated that (as of Friday morning) a quarter of the city’s residents paid no attention to calls for them to evacuate, despite predictions that most of Galveston Island would suffer heavy flooding storm tide. By 6 p.m. Friday night, estimates varied as to how many of the 58,000 residents remained, but the figures of remaining residents were in the thousands. Widespread flooding included downtown Galveston: six ft deep inside the Galveston County Courthouse, and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston was flooded. Tourist attractions on the island suffered various degrees of damage. The Lone Star Flight Museum suffered massive damage, as the storm surge washed through the airport and hangars with about 8 feet of water, and the recently completed Schlitterbahn Water Park was still closed in November 2008;however, Moody Gardens was built with storms in mind and was able to withstand the worst of the storm. In preparation of Hurricane Ike, Texas A&M University at Galveston closed on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at 5 p.m. and evacuation was ordered. Ike made U.S. landfall at Galveston, Texas, on September 13 at 2:10am. It was the third most destructive hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. The campus was not severely damaged; however,

the infrastructure of Galveston Island as a whole was. As a result of Galveston Island not being able to support the close to 1800 students the enormous challenge of relocating all students, administration, and staff began. On Wednesday, September 24, 2008 fall classes resumed in College Station. TAMUG resumed operations in Galveston in the spring of 2009. In Houston, windows also broke in downtown buildings, such as the 75-story JP Morgan Chase Tower, and Reliant Stadium was damaged. Also as a result of the high wind and eye wall that passed directly through the city, power outages were a major problem, as some residents were without electricity for over a month after landfall. Some parts of Houston were not expected to have power until November 1. Luckily, since the storm system moved rapidly and did not linger over Houston, flooding wasn’t a major problem for most of the city, as it normally is as a result of the geography. Due to the damage to the stadium, the Houston Texans’ game with the Baltimore Ravens, originally scheduled for September 14, was pushed back to November 9. Hurricane Ike affected the Houston Astros’ late dash for Major League Baseball’s playoffs, postponing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday’s games against the Chicago Cubs. Windows were broken throughout the JPMorgan Chase Tower.

On Bolivar Peninsula, Texas dozens of people were rescued as flood waters exceeded 12 feet above sea level in advance of the hurricane. The peninsula bore the brunt of Ike’s right-front quadrant, historically the worst part of a hurricane, and experienced catastrophic damage with the worst being between Rollover Pass and Gilchrist, Texas - west of High Island. Media estimates of lost homes exceeded 80% and could top 95%. A large number of people who did not evacuate in advance of the storm remain unaccounted for. The Southeast Texas communities of Bridge City on Sabine Lake and large areas of nearby Orange were inundated by the storm surge. Bridge City mayor Kirk Roccaforte estimated that only

It’s Time to Shape Up The Dreaded Exercise Page from the www.cheapnez diet.com

T

he secret to losing weight is to eat less and move more. This section is about the ‘moving more’ aspect.

Exercise comes in many sizes, shapes and degrees of intensity. The most important thing about exercise is to do whatever you decide to do on a regular basis. This program comes from the Cheap N EZ Weight Loss System so let’s keep it cheap and easy. We’ll also point you to some good websites which go into more detail on different exercise programs. According to the Mayo Clinic, a good fitness program should consist of four components: (1) stretching, (2) aerobics, (3) resistance and (4) core stability. Stretching should be the first component of your agenda, no matter what else you do. Stretching can start while you’re still in bed. Just stretch out your arms and legs. It feels good and helps you wake up too. A little slow toe touching and body twisting with your arms out to each side will get you going. http://www. thestretchinghandbook.com/ Aerobics is the one that gets your heart beating faster and your breathing heavy, not to be confused with seeing an attractive member of the opposite sex. About the easiest aerobic exercise is walking, so to start with we suggest a simple daily walk. It needs to be done regularly. That’s what daily means. You’ll benefit more from a casual daily walk than a monthly 15 mile run. Walking requires no expensive equipment though you do need some comfortable shoes but not necessarily expensive ones. Good brandname athletic shoes are available at discount stores for as little as $20. Jared Fogle, the Subway sandwich spokesman lost about 235 lbs with walking as his only exercise. http://www.aerobic.org/ Walking gets your blood pumping, burns calories, and moves oxygen throughout your system which increases your metabolism. So for starters, try walking about 20-30 minutes a day. If you have a choice an early exercise program is best. It wakes you up, your body will be burning calories all day and you’re less likely to skip it later in the day. If your weather is extremely hot or cold, try a small trampoline ($20) or a stepper (cinder block or board) that you can use indoors. Treadmills, Steppers or Nordic Traks are also all good though a little more expensive. However, a lot of used ones are available. Bicycling is also good exercise and fun if you have a safe place to ride. A stationery bike is fine if for some reason you can’t walk. You can also read or watch TV while biking or treadmilling. Swimming is a great overall exercise but obviously requires a pool or body of water. Resistance or muscle training is next. You can use body weight such as pushups and chinups and squats or purchase a few dumbbells or bands. Heavy weight is not necessary and you don’t want to strain your joints or pull a muscle. Calisthenics, Yoga and Pilates mostly use only body weight for resistance. Weight training increases bone density, builds and tones muscle, burns fat and calories, improves posture, boosts self-esteem, releases antiaging hormones, and prevents injuries. http://www.medicinenet.com/weight_lifting/article.htm Core exercise is a relatively new term. The core consists of the trunk area from waist to chest, front, sides, and back—all the way around. While some core exercises emphasize certain areas of the core more than others, ultimately the core muscles work together in unison as “nature’s girdle” to support your spinal column. A lot of people prefer doing core exercises on a fitness ball (about $20) but they can be done on the floor also, using a couch or chair to put your feet on. http://exercise.about.com/cs/abs/l/ bl_core.htm Whatever you do, start easy and increase very gradually but do it daily or at least regularly, like every other day at a minimum. So cut back on your portion sizes, stay away from the snacks, pay a little attention to your food choices, slowly start “moving more” and you’ll lose some weight and feel better. Guaranteed!

Madge figured if her upper arm was gonna flap, she might as well make patriotic use of it.

HURRICANE IKE about 14 (later updated to around two dozen) homes in the city were unaffected by the surge. Waterfront areas of Clear Lake were flooded, with floating debris battering homes and blocking some streets. Debris from the Kemah Boardwalk and pink boards from Maribelle’s were found all over the area.

NASA’s Johnson Space Center suffered minor roof damage to Mission Control and minor cosmetic damage to some of its other buildings. NASA’s operations at Ellington Field also sustained roof and awning damage, and one hangar was severely damaged. University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), the primary hospital in Galveston county, was dealt significant damage due to Hurricane Ike. Wide scale flooding caused failures to all facilities systems and allowed mold to invade all the buildings. All students at the UTMB medical center were transferred to other Texas medical schools immediately after the storm while determinations were made about the future of the hospital and medical school. November 12, 2008 saw thirty percent of the employees terminated in a reduction in force. As of March 2009 only 1200 employees were currently employed and being paid. Another 1200 employees are on unpaid administrative leave. All emergency facilities were moved to the Houston medical center. It wasn’t until August 1, 2009 that UTMB’s emergency room was reopened.

As a historical comparison, on September 8, 1900 the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 landed along a path similar to Ike’s, bringing with it a storm surge that inundated most of Galveston Island, which was Texas’ largest city and a major U.S. port. As a result, much of the city was destroyed, and at least 6,000 people were killed in a few hours. Engineers subsequently increased the average elevation of the island by 4 ft and constructed a 17-foot seawall to block incoming waves.

Shrimp

The Fruit of the Sea by Peggy Trowbridge Filippone Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. Thatthat’s about it.~ Bubba Blue from Forrest Gump Shrimp is not only very nutritious, it is the most popular shellfish in the United States. Luckily, it is available year-round. It is a popular ingredient in appetizers, salads, chowders, and, of course, as a main dish. The word shrimp comes from the Middle English shrimpe, meaning “pygmy” or a reference to the crustacean itself. In the 7th century, shrimp and other seafood composed the majority of the Chinese diet, and still does today. In 1280, Marco Polo commented on the abundance of seafood in Chinese marketplaces, including shrimp. Harvesting of shrimp dates back to the 17th century, where Louisiana bayou residents used seines up to 2,000 feet in circumference to scoop up the delicacy. Mechanized shrimping did not come about until after 1917. Today, the US harvests over 650 million pounds a year, more than any other country. And still this is not enough to fill the need, in spite of shrimp-farming. The US imports yet another 200 million pounds a year. Shrimp come in a variety of sizes and types. Although there are more than 300 varieties of shrimp, the most popular types are the brown, pink, and white shrimp from the Atlantic ocean. These common names refer to the general color of the shrimp before cooking. Tiger shrimp is also popular. It is so named for its dark stripes. In it’s raw state, it is not pink, but a bluish-white. When these shrimp are cooked, the color turns in color from pink to bright orange-red due to a chemical change brought on by heat. Once cooked, you may have a hard time distinguishing them from other varieties of shrimp. Rock shrimp is also now becoming popular. They have a very rock-hard shell, hence the name. The flavor and texture is likened to spiny lobster. Headless rock shrimp do look much like a miniature lobster, although the largest commerciallyavailable variety is under 2 inches in length. Shrimp are normally graded by

size and count, meaning the average number of shrimp to make a pound weight. The higher the number, the smaller the shrimp. In some areas, jumbo shrimp are referred to as prawns, but the prawn is actually a completely different species in the lobster family. Determining how much to buy will depend on the size, but generally count on 1/3 to 1/2 pound (shelled) per person. As a rule, the colder the water, the smaller and more succulent the shrimp. Shrimp Count Sizes Shrimp per pound: • 10 shrimp or less = Colossal • 11 to 15 = Jumbo • 16 to 20 = Extra-large • 21 to 30 = Large • 31 to 35 = Medium • 36 to 45 = Small • about 100 = Miniature Shrimp is highly perishable. Select firm shrimp with a mild scent. If there is any hint of the aroma of ammonia, it is a sign the shrimp is way past its prime. Some may have spots, an indication of poor handling. Commerciallysold shrimp is defrosted, in which case the flesh will appear opaque. Truly fresh shrimp will have almost translucent flesh. Do not confuse the term “fresh” with never-frozen. Truth be told, you probably will be unable to find never-frozen shrimp fresh from the ocean these days unless you have a shrimper friend or net it yourself. This is not necessarily a bad thing. Nowadays, shrimp is harvested, cleaned, and flash frozen on the boats before they ever reach the shore. This makes for a fresher product, until it reaches the market. Once it reaches the market, you are at the mercy of the handlers. If it goes right into the freezer, all is well. If you are buying from the seafood counter, there is no telling how long that shrimp has been defrosted, although icing it does help. You are better off buying frozen shrimp and defrosting it yourself in the refrigerator. It does not take long to defrost. Cooked shrimp can be stored in a sealed bag no more than 3 days in the coldest part of your refrigerator. Both cooked and raw shrimp may be frozen, but freezing raw preserves a better flavor. Raw shrimp can be frozen with shell or without, but should have the heads removed. Raw frozen shrimp will last 6 months in the freezer while frozen cooked shrimp should be consumed within 2 months. Commerciallyfrozen raw shrimp will last longer

in the freezer without deterioration, since they are flash-frozen fresh with little handling. Frozen cooked and uncooked shrimp should ideally be thawed in the refrigerator in advance of need. They can be added frozen to casseroles and baked dishes. If you need to quickly thaw, you may put the shrimp under cold water, not warm. Warm water will begin the cooking process. Shrimp is also available canned. Canned baby shrimp are a nice addition as a salad garnish, but should be rinsed thoroughly before using and may require a bit of picking over depending on the grade.

Shrimp Cooking Tips It is important not to overcook shrimp or it will become dry and rubbery. Cook only until the flesh is opaque. When using a boiling method, the shrimp will turn pink, rise to the top and float when done. Some recipes will cook the shrimp within the recipe itself. Others will require you cook the shrimp ahead, usually via a simple boiling method and perhaps with a spice mixture or crab boil mix. • You can make a wonderful broth by boiling the shells from shrimp with spices, onion, garlic, and perhaps some celery and carrot. Cool and sift through cheesecloth when the desired strength is achieved, and freeze it for later use in soups or chowders. • Try using beer for your cooking liquid to give shrimp a wonderful, slightly sweet flavor. • If your shrimp begins to smell a bit off, but are still young from the market, they are probably still okay to eat. You can remove the smell by rubbing the shrimp with baking soda, let them stand in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the soda. Do not use this method if the shrimp has a strong ammonia odor, which is an indication that it is time to toss them. • It is easier to peel and devein raw shrimp rather than cooked shrimp. • Shrimp cooked in the shell has more flavor than shrimp peeled before cooking. • Expect the weight of raw shrimp to reduce by half when cooked. Two pounds raw shrimp will yield 1 pound cooked, peeled shrimp.

AFT-TER THOUGHTS by Capt. B.G. Willie

In this dog eat dog world, it’s nice to still see examples of true love. A little old couple walked slowly into a fast-food restaurant one cold winter evening. They looked out of place amidst the young families and young couples eating there that night. Some of the customers looked admiringly at them, and you could tell what the admirers were thinking: “Look, there is a couple who has been through so much together, probably for 60 years or more!” The little old man walked right up to the cash register, placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal. The couple took a table near the back wall and started taking food off of the tray. There was one veggie burger, one order of French fries and one drink. The little old man unwrapped the plain veggie burger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. Then he carefully counted out the French fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife. He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As the man began to eat his few bites of veggie burger the crowd began to get restless.

Again you could tell what they were thinking. “That poor old couple. All they can afford is one meal for the two of them.” As the man began to eat his French fries one young man stood and came over to the old couples’ table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat. The old man replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything. Then the crowd noticed that the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She just sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink. Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat. This time the lady explained that no, they were used to sharing everything together. As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin the young man could stand it no longer. Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food. After being politely refused again he finally asked a question of the little old lady. “Ma’am, why aren’t you eating? You said that you share everything. What is it that you are waiting for?” After a long pause, she answered... “The teeth.”
