A SPECIAL DELIVERY Army dad watches son’s birth by video fter Lorna Illerbrunn found out she was pregnant, her husband Garrett got news he was being deployed to Afghanistan. It was no surprise for this veteran Army family. This was his fourth deployment, and Lorna has been deployed three times. In fact, the couple met while on duty in Afghanistan. So Lorna packed up their home in Colorado and moved to New Hampshire to be close to family while Garrett was away. For the final months of her pregnancy, she settled in and started working for the New Hampshire National Guard and Catholic Medical Center.

Welcoming more than 1,100 babies each year, WentworthDouglass Hospital’s Women & Children’s Center is the most popular choice on the Seacoast for moms-to-be.
Parenthood begins here When you are expecting a new baby, there are so many choices to make – What should we name him? What color should I paint the nursery? Which car seat is the safest? Among these is the important question: Who should deliver my baby? For first-timers, and even seasoned parents, the experience of having a baby is wonderful, but all the choices and planning can also be a lot of work. We understand that. Welcoming more than 1,100 babies each year, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Women & Children’s Center is the most popular choice on the Seacoast with moms-to-be. Our goal is to help each woman and family feel prepared, comfortable and confident as they embark on this amazing journey.

I AM PREPARED One of the first choices an expecting mom has to make is who will deliver her baby. You and your baby will be in good hands with our experienced and caring OB/GYNs and certified nurse midwives from four respected practices – Wentworth Health Partners OB/GYN & Infertility, Dover Women’s Health, Garrison Women’s Health and Goodwin Community Health. At our Celebrating Pregnancy events, parents can meet members of the team, tour the center, ask questions and prepare for their new bundles of joy. These events also offer information about our childbirth education classes and affiliated local doulas.
“I had a textbook pregnancy. Since there were no issues, they didn’t do an ultrasound after 20 weeks,” she says. Lorna worked right up to her due date and took a long walk the day before her son was born. Four days after her due date, her water broke and she headed to the Women & Children’s Center at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. “My brother drove me and my mom and dad came, and my friend Carrie showed up, and we had Garrett on Facetime. I was having normal contractions and then they decided to do an ultrasound,” Lorna recalls. “I could tell something was unusual, and then the nurse said, 'your baby is breech.' You could have heard a pin drop in the room.” Lorna’s midwife Lisa Jaramillo-Husted, CNM, and Dr. Julie Bleyenberg from Dover Women’s Health, explained that turning the baby was not a good option since her water was already broken. They recommended a C-section. “I hadn’t thought I was going to need a C-section, so I hadn’t focused any of my energy even learning about it, but they made it as easy as they could, explaining everything as it happened,” Lorna says. Carrie accompanied Lorna to the Women & Children’s Center’s dedicated on-site OR, where she was able to keep Garrett on Facetime so he could watch his son’s birth. Tucker Bradley arrived at 2:17 p.m. on April 19, less than five hours after Lorna arrived at the hospital.
789 Central Avenue Dover, NH 03820
I AM COMFORTABLE When it comes time to deliver your baby – we are ready. Our warm, inviting, private rooms offer mom and family all the comforts of home. There’s even an on-site playroom for siblings.

WHY I RUN
"Your support helps families like mine" By Sally Fletcher y the time we knew my dad had prostate cancer, it had already spread to his bones. He was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer. We were worried, but my dad was always so strong and positive. He did everything he could to stay with us – including two-and-a-half years of treatment and care in both Dover and Boston.
More than 1,400 people participated in the 2015 Seacoast Cancer 5K, raising $152,000 in support of cancer care and services at the Seacoast Cancer Center.
When Dad came in for radiation treatments at the Seacoast Cancer Center, he would bring along his 92-year-old mother. It was a social outing for her and a chance for them to spend time together. It sounds funny when I think about it now, but they really enjoyed their time at Wentworth-Douglass. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. I just don’t think you can get that kind of compassionate care anywhere else. As Dad’s health began to spiral downwards, the unimaginable happened — my mom was diagnosed with Stage 3a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Last June, my dad lost his battle with cancer shortly after meeting his first grandchild; and the same week my mom had her first chemotherapy treatment. The month was a blur. I registered for the Seacoast Cancer 5K just after we lost my dad and began fundraising for the event. It was nice to feel so much support from people’s generosity. What really made it special was being at the event! My mom and I stood at the finish line after my run, watching everyone until the end. All the people passing over the finish line had their own story to tell, all inspiring in their own special way. It was so nice to be there and relate to people dealing with the same thing I was.
Sally Fletcher, pictured with WentworthDouglass CEO Greg Walker, ran the 2015 Seacoast Cancer 5K in memory of her father and was the Top Individual Fundraiser.
This year, I’m proud to say that I’ve joined the Seacoast Cancer 5K Planning Committee, and I’ve already started a team in memory of my dad. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and co-workers for the outpouring of support! I’m happy that I can support the Seacoast Cancer Center, and I hope that you will join me on September 25! You can walk, run, volunteer or even fundraise as a virtual participant. With your support, we can keep helping families like mine.

Trauma and acute care surgery is one of several existing clinical affiliations between Wentworth-Douglass Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. Others include: medical oncology, cancer genetics, gynecologic oncology, stroke and thoracic surgery. As a member of the Mass General family, we will continue developing comprehensive care in more specialties. Peter Hedberg, MD, a Mass General physician and WDH’s medical director for Trauma and Acute Care Surgery; Coleen Pelletier, RN, Clinical Practice Leader, WDH Emergency Department; and Lukas Kolm, MD, WDH’s chair of Emergency Medicine.
Wentworth-Douglass to join the Massachusetts General Hospital family
T
he Boards of Wentworth-Douglass Health System and Massachusetts General Hospital have signed a letter of intent for Wentworth-Douglass Hospital to become a member of the Mass General family and part of the Partners HealthCare System.
Under the terms of the proposed acquisition, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital will remain an independently licensed, not-for-profit, charitable health care organization, and maintain its own board of trustees, medical staff, community connections, and fundraising activities. The proposed acquisition is subject to due diligence, the negotiation of definitive transaction documents, and review by state and federal regulatory agencies, which could take several months. This is an exciting proposal for Wentworth-Douglass and our entire community – one that will enhance the quality care available for patients and their families right here on the Seacoast. This agreement is the first formal step in the process to make Mass General the parent organization of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
WORLD-RENOWNED CARE Wentworth-Douglass’s existing clinical affiliation with Mass General has brought new sophisticated levels of care with world-class clinicians and expertise to this community. Joining the Mass General family is a natural progression of this close relationship and will make WentworthDouglass a leading destination for health care right here in the Seacoast with additional specialty services to treat conditions not traditionally available at community hospitals.
LEADING-EDGE PROTOCOLS Wentworth-Douglass will provide care with evidence-based best practices created by the nation’s leading hospital. In conjunction with our existing network of skilled primary care and specialty providers, new skills and technology will mean cutting-edge care is available, right here in the Seacoast.
Wentworth-Douglass to open health care facility at Pease International Tradeport Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is excited to announce plans to open services at the Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth in the fall of 2016. Many key strategic objectives for the advancement of our Health System were met over the last year. We added several new services to help improve access to care and providers, including the opening of Wentworth Health Partners Prompt Care, a walk-in center for patients of our primary care offices and the addition of Great Bay Mental Health to our mix of specialty providers. We welcomed over a dozen physicians and surgeons to our medical staff with expertise in many areas, including vascular surgery, cardiology, pulmonary medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, otolaryngology, medical oncology, emergency medicine and more. Also, in an effort to meet best practice protocols for patient-centered care, we were the first in the area to achieve Joint Commission Accreditation with Primary Care Medical Home Certification for our primary care practices. Patients remain at the core of what we do.

Peg's Legacy: A Transformative Gift n avid gardener, diligent volunteer and loving caregiver to her golden retrievers, Peg Kayser received care at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital’s Seacoast Cancer Center for four years. During her treatment, Peg would often be accompanied by her family members, who were impressed by the outstanding care that Peg received. “Dr. Civiello was a light at the end of the tunnel. The whole Seacoast Cancer Center was so compassionate,” says her family. Little did anyone at Wentworth-Douglass know – Peg had been inspired by the exceptional care she received here. As her health declined, she made arrangements to have 10 charities receive a portion of her estate, including the Seacoast Cancer Center. A year after Peg died, an unexpected gift arrived at the Seacoast Cancer Center. This generous gift will launch “LIFE (Lifestyle Interventions for Everyone)," a research-based healthy lifestyle course created by the Seacoast Cancer Center. This unique course will empower Cancer Center patients and their loved ones to improve their health with a focus on diet, exercise, environmental factors, psychosocial and spiritual elements. The Wentworth-Douglass Foundation would have loved the opportunity to thank Peg in person for her generous gift. As an estate donor, Peg is the newest member to the 1906 Heritage Society, the group of forward-thinking donors who have elected to include Wentworth-Douglass in their will or estate plan. To learn more about how you leave a legacy, please feel welcome to contact the Foundation at 603.740.2687.

New Hampshire Charitable Foundation supports substance abuse prevention initiative he New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, with a grant funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, recently invested $71,000 to collaborate with the Wentworth-Douglass Foundation in response to the substance misuse crisis in our communities. Dr. Margaret Joy Garcia and Dr. Maria Rodriguez of Wentworth Health Partners Lee Family Practice have implemented the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Program, a proven strategy to reduce substance misuse and expand access to treatment and support for teens and young adults ages 12-22. The grant supports training for clinical staff, data gathering to contribute to larger research initiatives and support for the project, which is part of a state-wide initiative.
Dr. Maria Rodriguez has helped to implement the SBIRT Program at Lee Family Practice.

Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is committed to being part of the solution. In addition to partnering with the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, other collaborations include working with our school systems, police and fire departments, and other likeminded healthcare and community organizations on strategies to address the crisis. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has acquired Great Bay Mental Health to improve access to licensed drug and alcohol counseling services. Wentworth Health Partners has added mental health providers to all of its primary care practices with locations in Strafford, Rockingham and York Counties. For expectant mothers struggling with substance misuse, the hospital’s social work team provides support before and during their stay, and the Women & Children’s Center clinical staff have specialized training and resources to care for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) newborns. The generosity of donors and volunteers plays an important role in providing vital resources to support these efforts.

Dr. Patricia Adams Legacy of Caring
fixture in the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital pediatrics department, Patricia C. Adams, MD, embodied the values of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Being a doctor was not a job she clocked in and clocked out of, it was her way of life. When Dr. Adams was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, it was a terrible shock. She and her husband Bob weren’t ready for her to clock out of her role at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. Bob, affectionately known by many as “Charlie," worked with Pat's friends and colleagues to establish the Patricia C. Adams, MD Endowment Fund for Children’s Care. This fund continues Pat’s legacy of going above and beyond in caring for pediatric patients. Already the fund has provided therapeutic programs for pediatric patients and will continue to make an impact for these young patients. In the summer of 2015, after the passing of Dr. Adams, the Wentworth-Douglass Foundation received a transformative gift to the Patricia C. Adams, MD Endowment Fund as part of Dr. Adams’ bequest. As one of the largest gifts Wentworth-Douglass has ever received, this gift will help to ensure that the compassionate care she provided to our youngest patients continues with the next generation. If not for Pat and Bob’s vision, this incredible legacy would not exist.
“I’m proud to be able to increase my personal gift by engaging corporate support throughout the Seacoast community. It’s inspiring to see how much support our hospital receives from the business community.” - Barbara Miller, Assistant Vice President, Treasury Services, Eastern Bank
For her 10th birthday, Savannah Collinsworth wanted to do something in memory of her grandfather, Louis George, who passed away from cancer the previous year. So, instead of presents, she asked for money that she could donate to help other people with cancer. Through her thoughtfulness and generosity, she was able to give $540.44 to the Seacoast Cancer Center and bring smiles to the faces of many of our patients and their families. (Savannah is pictured with her mother Tracey and staff from the Seacoast Cancer Center and Wentworth-Douglass Foundation.)

essage from President (from page 5)
We continue to receive accolades for providing award-winning care and making patients better every day – most notably, the 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ from Healthgrades - making Wentworth-Douglass Hospital one of the top five percent of hospitals nationwide for our clinical performance. We were also noted as one of the nation’s 2015 “Most Wired” Hospitals and Health Systems by Hospitals & Health Networks; and received recognition for achieving Get With The Guidelines®Stroke Gold Achievement Award from the American Stroke Association and the Heart Failure Gold Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. We ended the year with a very strong operating margin, creating opportunity to invest in new technology, advance strategic initiatives and continue to grow services. We are also in a favorable position to move forward with discussions to join the Massachusetts General Hospital family. The combination of our two organizations will mean that Seacoast area residents and visitors will have greater access to the highest-quality clinical care in the region and the most qualified and capable physician network supported by the most sophisticated technology and advanced health records systems – all delivered locally through Wentworth-Douglass, while being supported by the resources of Mass General. Assuming satisfactory completion of final due diligence and regulatory reviews, we expect the proposed acquisition to take effect by the end of 2016 or soon thereafter. As more information is available on this exciting opportunity, we will keep you updated. Thank you for choosing Wentworth-Douglass for your health care needs. Sincerely, Gregory Walker, FACHE, President, Wentworth-Douglass Health System

“I wasn’t prepared for when they put your baby on your chest and you just instantly fall in love,” she says. “I wasn’t prepared for how profound that was going to be for me. I was crying and kissing him.” Now three months old, Tucker has lots of dark hair, big eyes and looks just like his father. Lorna is so grateful for her experience at the Women’s & Children’s Center and all the support she received from staff during her surprise birth experience. “Who knows, if I had had a normal vaginal delivery, if it was a long labor, if the Internet was not great, Garrett might not have seen the birth,” she says. “There was a reason Tucker was lined up like he was. There was a reason I had a C-section. Garrett got to see the whole thing. We went through it together.” To learn more about the Women & Children's Center, visit seacoastbabies.com or call (603) 609-6964.

A very brief history of Wentworth-Douglass Hospital By Noreen Biehl or 110 years the hospital at the top of Garrison Hill has been open all day, all night. Walls went up, came down, and went up again, but as Board of Trustees Chairman Francis Robinson once said, “The heart of a hospital is not a building. The heart of a hospital is the hearts and hands of those who work in it and for it… as they carry on their comforting work.” Its story began on a warm summer day, August 30, 1906, when local citizens gathered for the Wentworth Hospital dedication event. Subtle breezes ruffled the canopies shading the porches of the men’s and women’s pavilions, separated by a stately, two-story administration building. At 2:30 p.m. keynote speaker Col. Daniel Hall strode up to the dais to praise Arioch Wentworth for his gift of $100,000 to the City of Dover to build a hospital named Wentworth. His 5,000 word tribute extolled the multiple virtues of this fine institution noting, “the sciences of medicine and surgery, and public charity, are all in the making and still in the gristle, and he who lives 50 years, as some of you will, will see this institution a much larger one than we launch or contemplate today.” From its beginning, the 30-bed cottage hospital became a “refuge for the sick and afflicted” regardless “of race, creed, or purse.” Its first superintendent, Grace P. Haskell, RN, and her small class of nursing students cared for patients with limited medicines and technology, documenting patient information in paper records. Charges ranged from $1.50 to $3.50 per day. Four general practice physicians and four general surgeons comprised the independent medical staff. The early decades were dominated by efforts to thwart epidemics of measles and influenza, ration food during WWI and the Great Depression, and provide care to people regardless of their ability to pay. Few patients were covered by medical insurance until after WWII, when companies offered insurance as an employment incentive. Generous donations from the Rollins family, Douglass families, and the Dunaway Foundation added space for new services. The name changed three times from Wentworth Hospital, to Wentworth City of Dover Hospital (1954) to WentworthDouglass Hospital (1961). Its highly regarded nursing school opened in 1906, closing in 1952 when professional nursing education moved to colleges and universities. As the fifties, sixties and seventies rolled in so did the specialists…pediatricians, obstetricians, anesthesiologists, oncologists, pathologists and many more. All physicians covered emergency, regardless of speciality, until emergency physicians took over 24/7 in the late seventies. Legislation in the early eighties separated the hospital from the city, allowing the hospital to serve a wider community of towns and cities, and enter into relationships with other health care institutions. During the nineties and early 21st century, programmatic expertise soared in cancer care, women and children’s health, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health, minimally invasive surgery, as well as, stroke, pain, and wound care. Recent donors supported the purchase of high-tech equipment, camps for kids with diabetes and cardiac disease, a community dental center and Care-Van services. The hospital became the Seacoast’s leading medical center, a system of care that today includes over 2,500 employees, a 400 member medical staff, primary care and specialty practices, the Wentworth-Douglass Foundation, The Works Family Health & Fitness Center and affiliations with academic medical centers including Massachusetts General Hospital. Wentworth-Douglass Hospital is, indeed, a much larger institution as Col. Hall predicted, yet its heart is still in the hands of those who care.

Every woman wishes for a healthy baby, but how she chooses to give birth is a personal and unique decision. Only you know what birth plan is right for you. Our philosophy is to partner with you to help you achieve the labor you envision. We have many options to support you through this process. From the moment he or she is born, your baby is placed skin-to-skin on your chest. As a Baby Friendly® hospital, our caring nurses and board certified lactation consultants are available to support you in breastfeeding, if you so choose. More than 80 percent of our mothers begin breastfeeding, a rate that is well above the national standards.
