WCU Department of Theatre & Dance 2021-2022 Season Pride and Prejudice

Fall Dance Concert

The Triangle Factory Fire Project

from the novel by Jane Austin, adapted by Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan Directed by Associate Professor Leonard Kelly

Directed by Associate Professor Gretchen Studlien-Webb

by Christopher Piehler in collaboration with Scott Alan Evans Directed by Associate Professor John Bellomo

Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre, Performing Arts Center October 22 & 23, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. October 24, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. Thus, famously begins Jane Austin’s masterpiece, Pride and Prejudice. Now all the wit and romance of this classic 1813 novel come to life in this refreshingly fast-paced and engaging stage adaptation. Jane, Elizabeth, and Lydia Bennet are likely-looking girls in a period when a woman’s one possible career is matrimony. Finding a husband may not be Elizabeth Bennet’s most pressing concern, but with four sisters and an overzealous matchmaking mother, it’s difficult to escape the subject. When the strong-willed Elizabeth meets the attractive but enigmatic Mr. Darcy, is it possible for them to look beyond his pride and her prejudice, and to make the best match of all? 14

Madeleine Wing Adler Theatre, Performing Arts Center November 12 & 13, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. November 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

University Dance Company’s annual Fall Dance Concert focuses on work by current WCU dance faculty and professional guest artists with selected student work.

MainStage Theatre, E. O. Bull Center for the Arts November 19 & 20, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. November 20 & 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.

Saturday, March 25, 1911. 4:45 p.m. flames sweep through the Triangle Factory. Panic-stricken workers run in all directions. Some make it to the fire escape, only to have it collapse beneath their weight. Others run to the exit door but find it locked. Dozens leap from the windows to their deaths, shocking the crowd of onlookers gathered below. And some through bravery or sheer luck make it out alive. By using real words spoken by real people, from Ukrainian seamstresses to millionaire Fifth Avenue socialites, The Triangle Factory Fire paints a heartbreakingly clear picture of a disastrous day in American history and explores the human toll such a tragedy takes on us all.

Student Written One Acts

J. Peter Adler Studio Theatre, E. O. Bull Center for the Arts

King Leontes tears his family apart with his jealousy, but grief unlocks his heart. Will the King find the child he abandoned before it is too late? Will the bear catch its prey? Will statues come to life? Come see The Winter’s Tale, in one of Philadelphia’s premiere director’s contemporary retelling of the Shakespeare’s classics.

The Student Written One Acts is an evening of short plays penned by the Theatre 313 Playwriting Class. Come see plays reflecting issues and themes that are resonate to college students from West Chester University. We are pleased again to have our talented students serve as directors, designers, technicians, stage managers, and of course, actors, to present this performance of original student work.

April 21, 22, 23 & 24, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. April 23 & 24, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ most popular folktales, Into the Woods imagines what would happen if famous fairytale characters were thrown together in increasingly dramatic and humorous ways. Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Little Red Riding Hood, a Baker and his Wife set out into the forest on their quests to find “happily ever after.” Along the way they meet Rapunzel, a Wicked Witch, a lascivious Wolf, vengeful Giants, a couple of charming Princes, and their own destinies. This beloved musical parable about the loss of innocence, the joys and sorrows of adulthood, and the price paid for getting the things you really want, is sure to challenge and delight you!

University Dance Company’s annual spring dance concert focuses various dance styles and creative student choreography as well as current WCU dance faculty and guest artists’ work.
