Simpson Furniture First Place: Carpet/Floor Covering, Furniture Honorable Mention: Home Accessories, Home Decor Like Yogi Berra said, ”It’s like deja vu all over again.” The continued support from the Cedar Valley has again placed locallyowned, and flagship of downtown Cedar Falls, Simpson Furniture Companies in first place as Best of the Best in furniture and carpet/floor covering — with the added bonus of receiving honorable mention in home accessories and home decor. “We’re delighted and honored,” said president and CEO Dale Emmert. “Ever since The Courier started this voting, we have been the Best of the Best. It is an award our staff takes seriously and feels as good about as we, the owners, do.” Preparing to celebrate 65 years in business, the Simpson Companies have big plans for 2011. After opening their fourth company in January 2010 in Coralville, they continue to grow and serve almost all of Eastern Iowa. While Emmert won’t say just yet what is on the burner for 2011, he did hint that the next moves will make Simpson the company to shop when it comes to furniture, flooring, mattresses and high-end design. Even with a stagnant economy, Simpson has grown. Over the last two years, Simpson added a new higher-end design studio to its downtown location that is home to the Flack Interior Design Associates division of the company. Director of Design Kathy Flack, ASID, has been in the metro area for more than 30 years. ”When we joined forces with the area’s premier furniture and flooring operation in 2009, we knew it was a great fit,” Flack said. “We continue to offer the unique looks we are known for with that personal touch. With the strength Simpson adds, we really can do it all for the client who needs design and space-planning help. It’s been a great partnership.” Flack and her staff recently won two gold and one silver awards from the central states region of the American Society of Interior Design. Flack is the only designer from Iowa to win such coveted awards. Flack is a past officer of the local ASID chapter as well as the regional, larger ASID membership. David Olson, the company’s chairman

of the board, has been with the store since the days when the Simpson showroom was a few buildings that grew to become the downtown’s largest retailer, both in size and sales. “I started back in the ’60s, and even then, the Simpson attitude was never to stand still,” Olson said. “We have always prided ourselves in staying ahead of the times and with such great people — like our former president David Sandvold — we fought to stay No. 1.” Sandvold and Olson led the company through the worst fire the downtown had ever seen in 1983 to come out on the other side with the current 35,000-square-foot tri-level showroom. Most in the Cedar Valley know Simpson for its leadership in furniture and mattresses. Winning Best of the Best in carpet/flooring gives great credibility to the huge growth Simpson has undertaken in the flooring category of its business. Led by company vice-president Terry Glasgow, the newly redesigned flooring center shows Simpson is committed to offering almost anything you need in carpet, wood, laminate, tile, vinyl — even green-friendly cork floors. “There isn’t a category in the flooring area that we can’t help our friends and clients find what they need,” Glasgow said. “I like to add that we back it all up with a staff of outstanding professional installers, many with more than 30 years experience.” A huge area of growth in sales for Simpson has been home decor and accessories. Many customers watch the many home and design shows that are available on TV today and know something small like an area rug or lamp can change the entire room. Simpson has added inventory and increased focus on home accessories and area rugs over the last few years and has been acknowledged by the Cedar Valley by the continued votes for Best of the Best. Deb Emmert does the buying for three of the company’s showrooms and takes pride in knowing that each store has completely different looks in home decor.

“We go to many markets each year just to stay on the cutting edge in accessories,” Deb Emmert said. “The colors, styles, shapes and sizes change so much more than they did just 10 to 15 years ago. We pride ourselves in always showing current looks. Our shoppers can see very affordable and adorable looks at our Rooms 4 Less showroom as well as find a total home makeover when they shop at Simpson Furniture in downtown Cedar Falls or our new beautiful showroom, Simpson FurnitureCoralville, on the ‘strip’ in Coralville.” Emmert is assisted in setting the showrooms and designing the new additions to each floor by designer and visual merchandiser Nette Schreen. Schreen is just one of many Simpson staffers who have been with the company for years. “This is a great place to work and, many times, it’s not even work. … It’s fun and rewarding,” Schreen said. “I come in and see so many smiling faces at the store, whether it’s Rick Koch, Marla Channer and Wayne Risvold who have been here 30 years or Jill Fauver who

brightens up our office in her just first year, I just love working with Simpson Furniture.” So a downtown anchor who has endured for 65 years wins again as the Cedar Valley’s Best of the Best. Never a company to rest on its laurels, Dale Emmert starts another day working to keep our loyal customers loyal, inviting our new shoppers to try out our “Simpson Way” and thank their 50- plus employees for making us who we are. “We just could not do it without our hardworking likeable staff,” Emmert said. “I love coming to work, I love our staff and I love our customers and clients. When you think about it, I don’t really have a job, I have a place that feels like home. “Thanks to the Cedar Valley and metro area for helping us stay the Best of the Best,” Emmert said with a wink and a smile.

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare First Place: Pediatrician — Dr. Brian Sims, Physical Therapist — Beth Koch Honorable Mention: Fitness Center — Covenant Fitness Center, Podiatrist — Dr. Richard Bremner, Family Doctor — Dr. Brian Burnett, Home Health Agency — Covenant Home Health, Pediatrician — Dr. Jodi Van Sickle & Dr. Victoria Runez There is a reason physicians and associates at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare have been honored as Best of the Best year after year. It’s because they are not just doing a job, they are on a mission. And true to the mission statement, providing exceptional, compassionate health care is what this year’s honorees do for each person they encounter, every day. “We are grateful to the Cedar Valley for recognizing these outstanding physicians and medical professionals in 2010,” said Vicki Parsons, vice president of human resources for Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. “These honorees truly demonstrate our values of respect, integrity, development, excellence and stewardship and make a positive impact on every person whose life they touch. Your confidence in them is a tribute to their expertise and caring spirits.” As part of Covenant Clinic, family physician Brian Brunett, MD, and pediatricians Brian Sims, DO, Jodi Van Sickle, MD and Victoria Runez, MD, podiatrist Richard Bremner, DPM, along with physical therapist Beth Koch have made a difference for thousands of patients. When it comes to the health and well-being of your family, you want to find the right health care provider. The Covenant Clinic network of more than 100 primary care and specialty physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners all share the common goal of providing exceptional quality health care to families like yours throughout Northeast Iowa. “It’s always an honor to be voted as one of the Best of the Best pediatricians in the Cedar Valley,” said Runez. “Success of the practice is a team effort in communication between a doctor, nurse and patient to keep our patient healthy and well. I am really happy that my patients trust me for their medical care.” “Being selected as one of this year’s Best

I am committed to each family for the long haul.” To Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, providing exceptional care also means going beyond hospital and clinic walls to reach out to those at risk. That’s exactly what the Covenant Home Health staff is focused on. A team of RNs, LPNs, home care aides, therapists and homemakers make more than 45,000 home visits each year, providing much needed health care services in the comfort of the patient’s home. “My recent experience with Covenant Home Health care nurses calls out for thanks, praise and appreciation,” Ed Stachovic said. “They guided me through a difficult recovery period with patience and compassion.” “We are truly honored to be among the Best of the Best again this year,” said Cheryl Neill, director for Covenant Home Health. “Our care giving staff goes above and beyond for patients, caring for the mind, body and spirit of each person they see.” The caring and experienced staff of Wheaton Wellness Services strives to promote healthy lifestyles for the entire family and to help you find the time to exercise. Fitness Center memberships include use of both Sartori and Kimball Ridge facilities where you can find a wide variety of fitness classes, circuit weights, cardio-

vascular equipment and personal training. Medically-based fitness programs are designed for individuals recuperating from a stroke or related diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, heart disease and cancer. “We are thankful to our dedicated wellness members, friends and families for honoring us as Best of the Best Fitness Center,” said Sheri Purdy, manager, Wheaton Wellness Services. “We enjoy helping you learn and practice healthy lifestyle habits and look forward to seeing all of you at the Wellness Center regularly.” In addition to having Best of the Best honorees year after year, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare is dedicated to giving back to the communities we serve in other ways. Even with the effects of the economic recession happening in and around all of our communities, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-Iowa’s community benefits have increased by nearly 3 percent. In our 2009 fiscal year, our community benefits totaled over $20.3 million, and more than 191,000 people in our community were served by our community benefit programs. Our health system installed the area’s only 64-slice CT scanner, we opened an Electrophysiology Lab, invested in digital mammography and recruited 17 physicians to Northeastern Iowa. These are just a few examples of our commitment to you. In this age of remarkable technology, it’s people who remain Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s most valuable asset. Thank you, Cedar Valley, for recognizing these outstanding people in 2010.

First Place: Sunday Brunch, Waitress — Amber Keppler Honorable Mention: Wine Selection Russell R. Wasendorf Sr., owner of myVerona Ristorante Italiano, has created and owned fine dining establishments for more than a decade. Fresh, high-quality food and an appreciation for a top chef with flair are passions for Wasendorf, who has traveled extensively throughout Italy, Europe and the world. He seeks to offer friends, neighbors and many employees and associates visiting the Cedar Valley from all over the world seasonal, novel dishes that epitomize the extraordinary textures and flavors found in Verona-style cuisine. The special wood-grilled meats and fishes, artisan cheeses, exquisite touches of garlic, prosciutto, balsamic vinaigrette, truffles and simple, fresh-ingredient, woodfired pizzas are offered with delectable, fine wines in a wide price range. It is his pleasure to offer these unique, savory recipes and tastes to those who visit myVerona — adults and children alike. The flavors of Verona, Italy, are brought to Iowa in an inventive menu that utilizes very fresh ingredients. Occasionally, myVerona’s chef and manager will find limited quantities of superior ingredients at their peak; daily specials are representative of these exceptional buys. These ingredients are crafted into novel dishes that purposefully highlight the ingredient’s extraordinary qualities. The restaurant is open for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch and also features several private dining and entertaining spaces for special events. MyVerona serves to delight and entice those who love good, fresh, pure foods. The wines and such delectable menu items are not found elsewhere in the metropolitan area, the state … or even the region. “Food tastes best when it is at its peak of freshness and when it is prepared to bring out and enhance that superior quality,” Wasendorf said. “When the flavor of premium ingredients is blended into a fantastic recipe, then we have hit our mark, whether the menu item is a special for only one evening or has a long-term stay on the list of appetizers and entrees. “When you have a staff that understands what the food is all about, understands the nature of artful beverage pairings and recognizes the customer’s need for a quality dining experience both in terms of their meal and their environment — representing value and appeal — you have succeeded in the most important touch of all: customer satisfaction. The award-winning wine list? That is pure pleasure.” MyVerona received a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2010. Rydell Chevrolet First Place: Auto Salesperson — Mike Potter, Oil Change Service Honorable Mention: Auto Service “Bottom Line Pricing” is a hallmark at Rydell Chevrolet. Prices are marked right on the windshields. No pushy sales people, no high pressure, no negotiating and no game playing. It’s an ethical and easy way of doing business, and it serves our customer. The price you pay for a car has nothing to do with a customer’s negotiating skills or who they are — that’s not the way Rydell does business. Studies done by J.D. Powers and Associates and other research groups have determined most people dread the automobile buying experience. The stress and the time involved with purchasing a vehicle makes lots of folks uncomfortable. Rydell has changed all that. They believe buying a vehicle should be fun

and stress free. Customers are treated in a friendly, professional and courteous manner. Rydell’s Mike Potter also was recognized for Best of the Best Auto Salesperson “Mike is truly a special salesperson,” said Jeff Smock, general sales manager. “His customers just love him. Mike’s genuine concern for them and their needs is what keeps his customers coming back. Rydell is very proud of him.” Like any business, Rydell wants to sell vehicles, but “Bottom Line Pricing” is not a gimmick or advertising campaign. It represents a cultural change within the organization and industry. For customers interested in quality preowned vehicles, Rydell also has a “5 Day Like It or Return It” 100 percent money back policy on all pre-owned vehicles. Silver Eagle First Place: Motorcycle Silver Eagle Harley-Davidson/Buell has been recognized by The Courier’s Best of the Best since its inception. The main store is at the corner of U.S. Highways 63 and 20 with a second location at Crossroads Center, conveniently located on the lower level next to Scheels. The Crossroads Center store sells everything but bikes and its merchandise is quite different from the main store. Owners Anthony and Vince Lumetta believe in two things: customer service and community. “Our focus at Silver Eagle HarleyDavidson is first and foremost our customers. When we focus on our customers, they come back time and time again, delighted in quality Harley-Davidson products and, more importantly, delighted in Silver Eagle,” Anthony Lumetta said.

“Part of our mission statement at Silver Eagle Harley-Davidson reads ‘How we achieve our vision of superior customer service will be through our committed team members, extraordinary people doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. … We will, as a team, steadfastly refuse to make any change that does not offer a benefit to our customers.’ This customer service concept rings true from the Motorclothes, Sales and Parts Department to our award-winning Service Department with the area’s only Harley-Davidson factory-trained technicians. We also feature Harley-Davidson authorized Express Lane Service. ‘Roll in and out in less than an hour.’” Anthony and Vince also believe that giving back to the community aids in the sense of pride that always accompanies Harley-Davidson riders and employees. of local charities, and they also sponsor countless activities in the Cedar Valley throughout the year. A brand new event added in 2010 was a group ride throughout the Cedar Valley named the 9-11 Remembrance Ride. This event, complete with a memorial service by the VFW and AMVETS, recognized those who lost

their lives Sept. 11, 2001. The event also involved the local police and sheriff who led the ride, and the Waverly firefighters who hosted a visit at their facility. “We believe in the Cedar Valley. And we believe in supporting our community by buying local and giving back to those in need. We make a big difference in our community by supporting local groups such as the Armed Forces, MDA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the NE Iowa Food Bank and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to name a few,” Anthony said. “We would like to thank our great staff for their dedication and commitment, and also our great customers for voting us Best of the Best again in 2010. U.S. Cellular First Place: Cell Phone Dealer U.S. Cellular continues to strengthen its reputation as the area’s best wireless provider by bringing innovative solutions to customers that elevate the customer experience and create a human relationship. “For us, it’s not just about delivering an array of cutting-edge phones that our customers want and deserve,” said Don Cochran, U.S. Cellular’s director of sales for Iowa. “We also have their backs with industry-first, customer-focused programs, such as Battery Swap and Overage Protection. We love making our customers’ lives easier.” How does U.S. Cellular do that? Through the Battery Swap program, customers can visit any U.S. Cellular store and change their battery for a fully charged one for free. With Overage Protection, customers can receive a text message when 75 percent of minutes or texts during a billing cycle are reached and another at 100 percent. U.S. Cellular customers have come to expect a reliable nationwide 3G network (the company has more than 750 cell towers in Iowa) and customer service (one of the wireless carrier’s five nationwide customer care centers is in Marion). Now, U.S. Cellular has a wave of exciting devices that have joined its smart phone lineup. U.S. Cellular offers two Android-powered phones, with three more planned for this year. The Samsung Acclaim has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a 3.2inch touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera and Wi-Fi. The HTC Desire features a slim, stylish design and vibrant 3.7-inch touchscreen that shows streaming video and graphics in vivid detail. The Samsung Galaxy S will launch this month, followed by the LG Tahoma and LG Thunder later this year. All U.S. Cellular phones that run on Android give customers access to popular Google applications and are pre-loaded with U.S. Cellular applications, such as My Contacts Backup, City ID, Tone Room Deluxe and Your Navigator Deluxe. Customers can tap into the Android market, a rapidly-growing catalog of more than 80,000 applications — most of which are free — to transform their phone into a lifestyle device.

U.S. Cellular has a wide range of monthly plans, including those with unlimited nationwide calling, unlimited free incoming calls and options to prepay. “Most plans have unlimited free incoming calls, which accounts for nearly half the time customers spend on their phones,” said Chad Hansen, an area sales manager for U.S. Cellular in eastern Iowa. U.S. Cellular has provided wireless service throughout Iowa for more than 20 years. There are almost 180 locations and nearly 1,500 associates across Iowa. Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular serves 6.2

million customers across the country. U.S. Cellular believes in the power of the community and has made a commitment to invest more than $4.5 million in teachers and schools during 2009 and 2010. U.S. Cellular also is proud to serve as the official wireless provider for the University of Northern Iowa Panthers. “I would like to offer a very special thank you to everyone in the Cedar Valley who voted U.S. Cellular the Best of the Best again this year,” Cochran said. “Our associates work hard to ensure our customers receive superior customer service and a reliable nationwide 3G network.”

She belongs to both Iowa AEYC and Illinois Action for Children, giving us a better look at child development in the Midwest. “I was part of an early childhood education delegation to China, teaching and learning innovative ideas for educating our youngest citizens. I think quality 0-5 education and care can make a significant, positive change that produces lifetime learners that find themselves stepping out of the box and raising the education bar,” Dehl said. CUCCC specializes in child development and preschool. This year, of the 120 CUCCC children entering kindergarten, 85 percent scored typical or

above on their kindergarten readiness assessment. “We have specialized teachers in all of our rooms creating an education base that begins at 6 weeks, working on skills like coordination, recognition, sequencing and self-expression through well-constructed lesson plans and play. We are firm believers in collaboration, working with Waterloo Schools to develop a voluntary pre-K program that fits the family and child as a whole. CUCCC serves on many community committees both in Cedar Falls and Waterloo, speaking for the youngest of Iowa’s learners,” Dehl said. “The secret to our success goes to our families and staff who support our belief that even infants should be given an opportunity to learn and grow in safe, healthy surroundings. By developing a yearly strategic plan with the help

of parents, staff and the board, we can focus on the type of development and environment that is best for our children and their families.” CUCCC also believes in giving back to the community through time, talent and service, teaching children responsibility by example. Honorable Mention: Hamburger, Locally Owned Restaurant, Place to Shoot Pool, Sports Bar

In a service-based business, education is key. Owners Brad and Dana Smith of Mr. Carpet Cleaning Co. believe this is one of the major reasons for their continued success and being voted at the top of the carpet cleaning category. Since 2004, Mr. Carpet has earned the top spot as the area’s premier carpet cleaning company every year but one, when it received honorable mention. Brad says that there are many factors that contribute to their continued success, but a few things stand out. “Service is by far the most important factor, and the rock that we stand on. However, one of the most important and yet most missed aspects of a service-based business is educating your target audience.” Smith believes when a prospective client is more educated about the product or service they are looking for, they are more likely to make an informed, intelligent decision. This is the driving factor behind

the Smiths establishing a free, recorded message that is available 24 hours a day for anyone to listen to. This message gives the listener common misconceptions about carpet cleaning and questions you should ask a company before inviting them into your home. The Smiths believe another area where many misconceptions are developed is in the area of flooding and water damage, which is another major aspect of their business. In response to that, they also developed a free, recorded message that covers many aspects of water damage, from the first steps to take upon a water loss, to what kind of questions to ask a professional. Top 7 Reasons Why You Should Have Your Carpet and Upholstery Cleaned Along With Your Tile and Grout Cleaned and Sealed This Fall 7. Dry Time. Fall air is typically drier air. Dry air accepts moisture more quickly. Faster moisture absorption means faster drying carpets. Your home’s heating system also can help to speed up the process. 6. Availability. Yes, even the best companies tend to have times when their not so crazy. This means less waiting time for “The Most Thorough Carpet and Tile Cleaning Ever!” As most of you already know, spring tends to be more difficult to reserve the time you want to get cleaning done. Scheduling gets tight, so cleaning in the fall gets you faster service and more flexible appointment times. 5. Indoor air quality. Lots of people are under the impression that carpets and upholstery somehow stay cleaner longer if cleaned during the spring. The truth is that the summer dust, teamed with germs and bacteria, blows into your home along with pollens and pollutants through open windows and doors. While you are out enjoying the nice weather your house is getting all polluted inside! Your carpet acts like a filter and collects all of that pollution. You won’t get to enjoy a healthy home and carpets in the winter because it is contaminated by fall when you close up your windows and start to spend more time indoors, breathing all that recycled gunk. Fall cleaning insures that your indoor environment will be healthiest when you need it to be the most. 4. Not-so-sweaty technicians. The amount of sweat beads on the guys’ foreheads happens to be in direct proportion to the air temperature. Imagine that! You get a great carpet cleaning performed by great smelling technicians!! 3. Cleaner carpet lasts longer. This is the time of year also when your carpet tends to take the most beating because of a family’s increased inside time. Soil trapped in carpet acts like a knife to cut and fray carpet when stepped on, causing it to wear out faster. 2. Clean up for the holidays! The last thing that you want on your guests’ minds when they leave is how soiled your carpets and/or grout lines were. Keep the rumors from spreading before they start! 1. My Company Was Voted Best of the Best Again For 2010! Yes, it’s true. My company has been voted #1 in the Cedar Valley for the last 6 out of 7 years. “This means when we’re done, you know it’s as clean as it can be. Sonic Drive-In First Place: Drive-Up Service The Cedar Valley community has spoken, and this year’s Best Drive-up Service award goes to Sonic, America’s Drive-In, who edged out McDonald’s and Wendy’s for this recognition. “We are thrilled to be recognized as a Best of the Best award recipient,” said David Nordstrom, the local franchisee of Sonic DriveIns. “We continually strive to improve our operations to provide quality products and great service to our customers. This award validates that our efforts have been noticed and appreciated by our most important asset—our customers. The Sonic Drive-In experience is unique. Customers park in their very own drive-in stall and push a red button on the menu board to place orders from their car. Each order is then delivered by a smiling, skating carhop to customers who are in their cars or sitting on the patio. In addition, customers can order menu items from the award-winning drive-thru window. It’s the attention to customer ser-

vice that sets Sonic apart from other quick service restaurants.” Carhop delivery isn’t the only thing that sets Sonic apart from its competitors. Sonic offers unique menu items that can be ordered any time of day. If you want a breakfast burrito as an afternoon snack, or a SuperSonic Double Cheeseburger for breakfast, Sonic will make your food to-order any time of day. Select menu items include hot juicy Sonic Burgers, Footlong Coneys (hot dogs with chili and cheese), fresh handmade onion rings, tater tots, Cheddar Bites and a variety of frozen favorites treats made with real ice cream. Sonic is best-known for its unique drink flavor combinations — more than 168,000 of them — and prides itself as Your Ultimate Drink Stop. Sonic’s signature Cherry Limeades are served with slow-melting ice that helps drinks stay cool while maintaining flavor. Every day from 2 to 4 p.m., customers can enjoy half-price fountain drinks during

Happy Hour. “The Happy Hour program has been so successful that we have recently introduced another discount drink program called Morning Drink Stop,” said Dave Fry, COO for the Sonic franchisee. “We are selling large drinks for just 99 cents till 11 a.m. everyday. We understand that our customers appreciate the value, quality products, and great service. We have it all.” When asked about the keys to their success Lynn Hennings, director of operations, said: “It is our drive-in management staff and their crew. They understand our company values and work hard to deliver a great experience to each and every customer that comes to visit our restaurant. We believe work hard pays off, but we love to have fun while we do it! Where else do you get paid to skate?” Contrary to what you might believe, the Sonic Drive-In is open every day, all year round.

★ 42 E. Tower Park Drive, corner of Kimball Avenue and San Marnan Drive, Waterloo. ★ (319) 232-1434.

“Yes, we are trying to make everyone aware that we are open every day of the year. Because of our drive-in format, some people assume that we close during the winter. That is simply not the case,” said Fry. “We are not just a place for great real ice cream treats, we have so much to offer our customers, regardless of the weather. Our drive-thru window service is just as popular as the drive-in carhop delivery.” Sonic also has a Facebook page. It is listed as “Sonic Drive-Ins of Eastern Iowa.” Customers are invited to become a fan and get fun and exciting information about their favorite local Sonic. Congratulations to the team at Sonic Drive-Ins for being voted and recognized as a “Best of the Best” business partner in the Cedar Valley.

She taught me to love food, to love cooking and to love making people happy with my creations. I’ve never worked in a restaurant or bakery, but something drew me to entertaining large groups during college, which evolved into catering, which evolved into opening Scratch from my home. “Almost immediately it was clear I was outgrowing my space, and I started to put my dream in motion. the Cedar Valley for five years in a row,” Krejchi said. A recent addition to Dalton’s Cedar Falls Industrial Park location has been a fireplace showroom. This showroom is complete with 12 working models. “Homeowners are looking at new and different ways to change the look and feel of their existing homes. … Plus, they are becoming more energy efficient with a gas burning fireplace. A new fireplace can warm up a cold, drafty room in an instant,” Krejchi said. As attitudes around the world become greener, consumers are looking for cleaner, more efficient, cost-effective ways to satisfy their household energy needs. Dalton Plumbing Heating and Cooling is proud to be one of the first in the area to offer green solutions for concerned citizens. One product they offer is the Hybrid

Heat Dual Fuel System. This system is designed to deliver maximum comfort and efficiency with an Infinity 96 gas furnace and Infinity 19 heat pump delivering heated air temperatures that are warmer than most traditional heat pumps — so the air feels warmer to the touch from your vents. Another product getting lots of attention these days is Geothermal Heat. “Geothermal energy not only costs less to operate, but also helps preserve natural resources and lessens our dependency on fossil fuels,” Krejchi said. Dalton also is pleased to announce they now offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly way to heat water — solar water heating. Western Home Communities First Place: Assisted Living, Nursing Care When newly-hired employees attend orientation before they begin working at Western Home Communities, CEO Kris Hansen makes sure they understand their importance. It doesn’t matter if they have “director” in their title or if they’re a teenager on the wait staff; everyone, he says, is there to make a difference for the residents. So when an honor like Best of the Best is bestowed, Hansen is quick to extend the credit. “This is all about our employees,” he explains. “They make us who we are.” That culture extends throughout Western Home Communities, impacting the daily lives of more than 750 residents. What began as a small nursing home 98 years ago, now encompasses active lifestyle living villas and townhomes, five retirement communities for independent living, two assisted living centers, specialized memory care, skilled nursing care and SureCare Services in-home companion care. “Everyone is mission-oriented and focused on our residents,” explains Sue Weber, director of nursing for the Elizabeth E. Martin Health Center, located on the main campus near downtown Cedar Falls. “We go above and beyond to accommodate their needs.” Visitors often recognize that something is different at Western Home Communities. Barb Larsen first noticed it during the 1990s, when her mother was a resident. As her mother progressed through the continuum, Larsen was impressed by the care her mother received and relieved that she never had to worry. The experience with her mother made such an impression on Larsen that she applied for and accepted the job of resident coordinator in 2002, then four years later helped open Windhaven Assisted Living on the South Main Street Campus. Now, as the front desk receptionist there, Larsen helps create a warm, welcoming culture by greeting anyone who walks in the front door. You can often find her bantering with residents, asking about their day and answering their questions.

“The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable,” according to Larsen. “My perception is our residents tend to settle in fairly easily. You do get very close to them, and they become your second family.” Residents also are a bright spot for assisted living Charge Nurse Peg Orvis, LPN, who wanted to work in long-term care after a high school co-op experience. She finally went back to school at age 40 to pursue her dream of a nursing career. “I couldn’t ask for anything better. It’s just awesome here,” says Orvis. “From aides to the front desk staff to my bosses, everyone cares about the residents and each other.” Employees credit the leadership team for creating that environment from the top down. Bosses set the tone and lead by example, often pitching in to do whatever is needed. “That’s our mission statement in action,” Hansen says. “Doing what it takes to create fulfilling lifestyles for seniors, their families and our employees.” Far from being cliché, Orvis says the family feel throughout Western Home Communities is the real deal. “When they say they care, they really do.” Resident Assistant Laci Tambornino found out how much the WHC community cared when Hurricane Gustav disrupted her plans to get married in Jamaica in 2008. She needed a new, impromptu wedding location and thought of the lake in front of Windhaven Assisted Living. So Laci called her co-workers, who hastily arranged all the details from flowers to music to a minister. Windhaven residents dressed up for the ceremony and watched Laci descend the Windhaven stairs with tears in their eyes. “They’re all very genuine and they actually care about you,” Tambornino explains. “The residents watched me get married, then get pregnant and have a baby. They love my son like he’s their own grandchild. It’s nice to come to work and know you’re cared for.” One of those residents is 91-year-old Bob Reese, who has experienced and appreciates the continuum of care offered by Western Home Communities. He and his late

wife first moved to Windgrace, one of the retirement communities on the South Main Street Campus. He moved to Windhaven three years ago at the urging of his physician, who recommended assisted living to address some health issues. “I love it here! They’re all so friendly,” enthuses resident Bob Reese. “I like the fact they care about people.” Reese still maintains an active lifestyle, joking that he likes to cause all kinds of trouble. He volunteers however he can, often accompanying others to their doctor visits and appointments. “If I can help people, I’m happy,” he says.

History of community involvement Western Home Communities has historically enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with the greater Cedar Valley community. Residents serve in a variety of community volunteer roles, and many volunteers from the community donate their time to benefit WHC in various capacities. CEO Hansen points to Friends of Western Home Communities as the volunteer organization that has contributed much to the quality of life for residents. The Friends host an annual breakfast that serves more than 600 people and is the group’s major fundraising effort for the year. Funds raised provide extras that residents will enjoy; in recent ears, Friends purchased Wii’s for all buildings. This year’s Friends project was designing, constructing and painting barn quilts for two barns on south campus.

New assisted living options this fall Western Home Communities has continually grown and changed to meet the needs of residents. That process continues today. Just last month a new addition opened at Windhaven Assisted Living, including 35 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Throughout this year, renovations have been under way at Stanard Family Assisted Living. When all the work is finished by late December, 14 more spacious residences will have been created from an existing 28.

“Times change and residents have different needs,” explains Judy Staff, director of resident relations at SFAL and a 35-year employee of Western Home Communities. “We’re always looking at new ways to better serve seniors, and these renovations allow us to do that.” Located on the original main campus at 11th and Grove streets, life at Stanard Family Assisted Living is gracious and carefree. The historic neighborhood offers easy access to downtown amenities and the trail system. Monthly fees include all utilities (except telephone) and cable TV. Three delicious meals, prepared on-site, are served each day in the comfortable and beautifully decorated dining room. A registered dietitian is available for consultation on special diets. Residents of SFAL enjoy weekly cleaning and laundry service, plus maintenance of their living quarters, the common areas, buildings and grounds. Free laundry facilities are available for residents who want to do their own laundry. Music therapy, pet therapy, wellness programs and activities are offered, along with scheduled transportation for appointments, shopping and activities. A beautiful on-site chapel serves as a focal point for many services throughout the week. Two chaplains offer their services to all residents as requested. Both assisted living options at Western Home Communities offer privacy and independence with the added security of nursing care available 24/7 on site, not just on call. Medication management is included and assisted living residents choose the level of additional daily nursing care needed. Seniors have more time to enjoy life since there is no burden of home maintenance, housekeeping, laundry or meal preparation. “The Cedar Valley is fortunate to have many strong long-term care providers,” reflects Hansen. “So it’s really an honor to know that the community has confidence in what we do. It also inspires us to keep getting better on behalf of our residents, those who are here now and those who will be in the future.”
