Simpson Furniture First place: Furniture, floor covering History has been good to Simpson Furniture, the 67-year-old eastern Iowa retailer, who has again captured FIRST PLACE in the 2013 Best of the Best voting for furniture and floor covering places to buy! Just like every other year the voting has taken place for The Courier’s coveted Best of the Best winner, Simpson Furniture-Flooring-Design and Mattresses took the honors for 2013. President and 30-year Simpson veteran, Dale Emmert expressed deep gratitude to the customers and clients of this locally-owned company for their continued support of Simpson. “We never take for granted the voting in this event, and we work daily with our staff to ensure our friends who shop with us are happy and satisfied every time!” These past 12 to 24 months have been exciting for Simpson Furniture as they sold their downtown building and made a huge move to a new location just one mile south of where the store had been since 1946. The moving sale held in June of last year was topped off with a grand opening last fall in the brand new showroom at 2300 Main St., still in Cedar Falls. Board of director vice-president and showroom designer Deb Emmert thinks back to all the work it took to make the huge move and has no regrets. Deb said in a recent interview,”Our staff is top notch, and the way everyone dug in and worked extra to help with the move and then continue to work on improving the showroom reminds me that we also have the “Best of the Best” employees.” Simpson Furniture is really four stores in one. A 30 percent larger showroom for furniture and accessories is complimented by their Simpson Design Studio under the direction of Kathy Flack, ASID designer. The 25 percent larger floor covering gallery is managed by Kelly Ellingson, and long-time partner Tom Cagley oversees a mattress department almost 20 percent larger than before. In addition to the new and exciting things in Cedar Falls, Simpson continues to see growth in their operation in the Iowa City-Coralville corridor where a beautiful 30,000-square-foot offering employs more than a dozen more

staff and with award winning service as well. The newer Coarlville store is an “A-List” performer, a voting of KCRGTV viewers in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City markets. Coralville vice-president Zach Epley headed up the move south in January of 2010 and reports that sales and exposure are helping add to the Simpson legacy. “We started out in the winter of 2010 and in less than four full years we are making a name for ourselves in a market that we hope to expand into even more. Our sales have almost doubled since the end of 2010, and our

traffic is up every month over last year,” Epley said. Simpson is not only a great place to decorate your home with stylish and affordable furniture and accessories, they are also known in the metro area as one company that becomes deeply involved in the community. Simpson Furniture has been a sponsor and supporter of the Gallagher-Bluedorn P A C at the University of Northern since the Arts Center opened over 14 years ago. They also support Panther athletics and student organizations. With gifts and donations to area schools, hospitals and events you see the Simpson logo in many venues. “We also support the Magical Mix Kids, Waterloo Black Hawks and Bucks, Festival of Trees, College Hill Arts, Sturgis Falls and Community Main Street, plus many more activities and events

in our surrounding customer base. Our Coralville store is just as active and folks south of here are becoming to know of the big way we become a part of their communities.” Company Vice President Chris O’ Brien remarks. She closed with a comment often heard when speaking of the “Simpson Way”...”We don’t look at our job as selling furniture. instead we look at it as finding a solution to your home decor needs. We do so with a smile and friendly help, backed by fast, helpful delivery and finally standing behind what we sell so you know when you buy from us, you’ll never regret it!” Dale Emmert echoed those same thoughts, “I guess that’s why we are so happy every year when chosen the First Place winner of the “Best of the Best” voting...it shows that our customers and shoppers believe in us, and we believe in the Cedar Valley!”

Dan Berregaard has been in the real estate business for 14 years. “Prior to real estate, I was in retail sales and management. I realized that the two things I enjoyed most were working directly with the client/customer and helping them, but also working with other sales agents to help them learn and grow in their abilities to help their own customers/clients,” Dan said. “Making the transition to being a real estate agent and broker gave me a great opportunity to practice both of the things I loved the most. My work hours are split between working with my own real estate clients, helping them purchase and sell residential real estate, and helping to lead our team of 60 licensed Realtors at Oakridge. “For me, it’s a great balance of those things that give me the most satisfaction,” he said. “I really enjoy what I do. I feel well-placed in my profession. When you love what you do, it comes across to your

KIMBALL & BEECHER FAMILY DENTISTRY WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE CEDAR VALLEY FOR THEIR SUPPORT IN MAKING US BEST OF THE BEST 2013!

“I love being a part of this hard working, caring, friendly, and amazing team of doctors, hygienists, assistants, and front desk staff! Our office strives to continue learning about new technology and techniques to provide the best and most efficient care to our patients. Our doctors are patient, gentle, genuine and honest, and that is why I enjoy working here!” — Brittany, Manager, Cedar Falls office, 3 years of service “I love my job because I know a lot of people hate having restorative work done and I like being the person that makes your visit quick, easy, and maybe not as bad as you imagined it would be. Over the last 5 years I had the pleasure of working with some of the most funny, caring, supportive and talented ladies in the Cedar Valley. It doesn’t get any better than the team you find in our office. We are a family!” — Amber, EFDA, Waterloo office, 5 years service “Many people do not enjoy visiting the dentist believe it or not! When I make that experience more tolerable or even enjoyable for my patients and help them understand the value in preventative care or necessary treatment, it is very gratifying.” — Carolyn, RDH, Waterloo office, 1 year of service “I love being able to build relationships with my patients, getting to know them personally, and helping them improve their oral health. When I see a patient struggling with an oral condition and I can help them to overcome it and maintain health, it gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment!” — Amanda, RDH at Cedar Falls office, 4 years of service “The reason I love myy jo job is myy interaction with the ppatients. Getting ng to know them over the yyears of workingg here and helping them to have a good experience at our office. One patient sticks out in particular to me. She had hated her teeth her whole life. She had bonding done to them multiple times over the years trying to make them better. She came to us for a consult on veneers. We did the wax up and showed her what we could make them look like. She decided that was the treatment she wanted to do to achieve the smile that she wanted. The day we put her veneers on was an awesome day!! The smile on her face was priceless!! How can you not like your job when you realize how happy you just made someone!!” — Elizabeth, EFDA, Waterloo office, 3 years of service “Our patients are very important to us! We strive to provide the best care for our patients!” s!” — Michelle, EFDA, Waterloo office, 3 years of service “I love being a part of the Kimball and Beecher Dental team because I get to see patients that have been coming to the office for years. Truly they are like family to me. I get excited for their joys in life and I have empathy for their tribulations in life. I love to make everyone’s day a little bit brighter with a smile!” — Sandy, Front Desk Specialist, Waterloo office, 24 years of service “For the past 20 years, I have enjoyed greeting the patients at the front desk. I’ve gotten to know them personally, as friends. I enjoy learning about their families. Kimball & Beecher Dental have given me the opportunity, to carry on with a job that I so enjoy.” — Jane, Front Desk Specialist, Cedar Falls office, 20 years of service “I have been with Kimball and Beecher for 10 yyears and the one ppart I absolutely ly love about my jjob is all the employees ploy work well as a team and it’s a ggreat atmosphere ph to work in. We all have fun from day to day and I feel like my coworkers are a second family to me. Helping our patients have been always rewarding and feels great to give that service back to the community”! — April, Manager, Waterloo office, 10 years of service “I love what I do because of the patients! p The best feelingg is when I have a patient p that comes back to the office and tells me how wonderful their last visit was because I went the extra mile. Whether it’s due to the treatment they received or if it’s simply because I explain everything in detail so they understood. I also find it rewarding when I can influence the outcome of a child visit. Kids show up very nervous not knowing what to expect and when it’s all said and done they leave the office jumping and skipping! Positive patient feedback and knowing I made someone’s visit a little better is what keeps me happy!” — Mindy, EFDA, Manager, Waterloo office, 5 years of service “Being a part of such a dynamic team at Kimball and Beecher Family Dentistry, gives me a sense of pride, satisfaction, and great achievement. To recognize that there are so many people who dread going to their dental appointments, fear the cost of dentistry, and who are dissatisfied with their smile made me choose this profession. I am exceedingly grateful when I personally can help someone in any of those aspects. Not only do my employers share the same philosophies and beliefs as I do when it comes to treating patients with respect and like family, but they treat their staff the same way. The associate dentists and auxiliary staff in both offices are some of the best that I have ever worked with in my 16 years of dentistry. They are truly my second family and I love going to work every day because they make it fun and not “work”. I am very honored to be a part of the Kimball and Beecher Family. Thank you Drs. Kimball and Beecher!” — Joy, RDH, Clinic Administrator, 9 years of service

Currently, we have gone green by changing to a PPG waterborne paint system. This is much healthier for our employees as well as the environment. Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, which has more than 2,700 associates, invests in the communities we serve and is committed to living out the healing ministry by providing exceptional and compassionate health care service that promotes the dignity and well-being of the people we serve. In this age of remarkable technology, it’s the people who remain Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s most valuable asset. Thank you Cedar Valley for recognizing these outstanding people in 2013! Four individuals received Best of the Best awards for their exceptional care with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. Dr. Richard Bremner received First Place Best of the Best Podiatrist for his care at Covenant Arrowhead Clinic.

“What ‘Best of the Best’ means to me is that I have wonderful support; from the receptionists, facilities and administration to my two nurses that have been with me for many years. I believe this is a team approach, and we try and treat patients the way we would want to be treated.” Chris Nieman at the Covenant Clinic Kimball location, received Honorable Mention for Medical Staff Member. “There is nothing more honorable than being able to care for others when they are sick, worried, healing or just needing a check-up. I have been blessed to help care for so many wonderful people. I am grateful to work with Dr. Riggs and the rest of my Covenant Clinic Kimball family and to be a part of a beautiful mission of caring for others.” Dr. Brian Burnett received Best of the Best Honorable Mention for his dedication to providing exceptional healthcare. The family practitioner at Covenant Clinic said pediatrics and sports medicine are two areas he enjoys.“Having patients trust and depend on my medical advice has been humbling and motivating over time,” Burnett said. Angie Schreiber, Physician Assistant, received Best of the Best Honorable Mention for Family Doctor and Medical Staff Member for her quality patient care at Covenant Arrowhead Clinic. Receiving a Best of the Best Honorable Mention for Home Health Agency this year is Covenant Home Health. To Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, providing exceptional care also means going beyond hospital and clinic walls to reach out to those at risk. That’s exactly what the Covenant Home Health staff is focused on. A team of RNs, LPNs, home care aides, therapists and homemak-

ers make more than 45,000 home visits each year, providing much-needed health care services in the comfort of the patients’ home. “Satisfied staff equals happy patients and our team treats each other and patients like family, providing top-quality home care in a supportive and caring environment,” said Cheryl Neill, Patient Care Director Home Health/Home Medical. “I went into nursing because there were so many options, even in the ’80s. Nursing was expanding into more home care and occupational health. Home health was my favorite clinical experience as a student nurse. Home health care continues to bring joy and satisfaction 29 years later.”

Covenant Medical Center

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s Covenant Medical Center traces its origins to 1912 when Franciscan Sisters founded St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo. Seventy-four years later, in 1986, the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters consolidated St. Francis Hospital with neighboring Schoitz Medical Center to form Covenant Medical Center.

Sartori Memorial Hospital

The Hospital – the first in Cedar Falls – became known as Sartori Memorial Hospital. Sartori Memorial was owned by the city of Cedar Falls until 1996 when it was sold to the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters. Today, Sartori Memorial is a 100-bed, full-service community hospital providing acute, subacute and outpatient care to the people living in and near Cedar Falls.

Mercy Hospital

Mercy Hospital was founded in 1926 in the railroad town of Oelwein by The Sisters of Mercy. In 1982, The Sisters of

Mercy transferred sponsorship of the hospital to the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters. Mercy Hospital is a 25-bed, critical access hospital that provides acute, skilled and outpatient care to the community and surrounding area of Oelwein.

Barmuda, a locally owned food and beverage company, continues to earn its reputation as one of the Best of the Best in the Cedar Valley with 28 awards in the 2013 voting. Barmuda’s founder, Darin Beck, has been in the food and beverage industry for over 31 years, and formed the Barmuda Corporation in 1986. We are proud to bring different cuisines from around the world to the Cedar Valley and we are thankful for the support we receive from this great community which enables us to continue doing what we love. Here is a rundown of our locations and services:

Soho Sushi Bar & Deli/ The Stuffed Olive

Opened July 11, 2005 (8 years old) 119 Main St., Cedar Falls 266-9995 www.barmuda.com Owner: Darin Beck Manager: Lindsey Grinnell, five years with Barmuda Hours: 6:30 a.m. Monday-Friday; 7 a.m. Saturday-Sunday Soho features a breakfast menu, New York-style deli sandwiches and salads, California style sushi and European influenced tapas (small plates), along with a robust wine list and a world class martini menu featuring more than 100 martini creations. There’s something for everyone on Soho’s menu! Soho is most likely the Cedar Valley’s most unique restaurant with a very large menu that satisfies even the most discriminating guests. Soho is consistently one of the area’s favorite lunch and dinner destinations. Soho features a large deli and sushi menu and its sister store (The Stuffed

Olive) next door features tapas and martinis. Both menus are available throughout both Soho and the Stuffed Olive making for a very large and well rounded overall menu. Our guests love the variety and food quality. Soho also features many healthy options and is an officially designated Blue Zone restaurant. Soho consitently wins in multiple categories in the annual Best of the Best locally, and has won a number of culinary competitions over the past eight years. Many of our chefs have gone on to do big things and have won awards while working with us.

Ferrari’s Ristorante

Opened November 7, 2005 (8 years old) 1521 Technology Pkwy., Cedar Falls 277-1385 www.barmuda.com Owner: Darin Beck Manager: Abby Lathan, eight years with Barmuda Hours: 11 a.m. Monday-Friday; 4 p.m. Saturday Ferrari’s is a full service restaurant featuring chef prepared meals served up in a beautiful dining room complete with black linen on the tables. Ferrari’s is indeed an upscale restaurant yet its fairly casual dining experience boasts one of the Cedar Valley’s finest menus. Ferrari’s features fine steaks and seafood as well as traditional Italian dishes. Ferrari’s has very few true competitors when comparing food quality and atmosphere. It is truly a beautiful and very comfortable restaurant. Our guests tend to stay longer than most other restaurants encourage. That’s probably due to our extensive wine list and awardwinning food.

Ferrari’s is an upscale culinary delight. It’s not overly sophisticated, but you’ll find the Cedar Valley’s finest meals served at Ferrari’s. Although there are Italian offerings on the menu, Ferrari’s has many things you wouldn’t find in a traditional Italian restaurant on the menu. Children are welcome, but most people don’t bring them along. Ferrari’s is designed for everything from date night to business lunches. You simply won’t find a better lunch at a better price anywhere or a more romantic place to have dinner. Ferrari’s consistently places for best restaurant to have a business lunch and always ranks in the top three for places to dine on special occasions. Ferrari’s has also won the wine spectators award for many years running and has won multiple culinary competitions over the past eight years.

Page 31

Bourbon Street is upscale yet very casual at the same time. You won’t find table cloths in our dining room, but you will find the area’s best steaks and seafood. The massive oak tree in the middle of the dining room makes for an interesting atmosphere, but it’s the food you’ll come back for again and again. Bourbon Street offers the finest steaks and seafood in the area, along with an award-winning wine list. Bourbon Street consistently wins or places for best locally owned restaurant, steaks and more. Bourbon Street is a chef-driven, New Orleans-inspired concept that does indeed feature some excellent Cajun and Creole menu items. The overall menu, however, is decidedly more eclectic than that. Bourbon Street does boast having boldly flavored dishes, but that does not mean everything is spicy. It’s a common mistake many peoBeck’s Sports Brewery ple make. Field of Yoga Honorable Mention: Fitness Center A message from Mary McInnis Meyer, Owner/Change-Maker: Nobody knows what a yoga studio can do for them until they (a) get in there, and (b) keep going there for months to allow it to work wonders on them that they’re not capable of seeing at first. Who’s crazy enough to start a business like that? A change-maker. Yeah. That’s what I’ve been calling myself lately. I say it when I’m fightin’ the good fight, also known as the path of most resistance. I say it when I look around at all the change-makers we serve, who support what we do. I say it and my heart beats faster. Try it. I work in a place where small changes are exponentially celebrated. “You meditated today? Awesome! Hey, everyone, Mary meditated — let’s go buy Mary a beer!” The yoga system for change says you have to take the time to see the small changes or you’ll be living a life that’s all about what sucks. What you don’t have yet. We’re changing that. Contrary to what our amazing brains tell us, we can’t think ourselves into changing the way we think. What works is getting our whole physiology on board. I don’t mean exercise; yoga isn’t the only way to get that. I mean doing the kind of wise work with our bodies and

breath that effects change deep down where most of our problems start — our central nervous system. Those skinny, old, half-naked yogis were masterful at this. We should listen to them. (Just don’t dress like them.) The cool thing is those yogis wrote stuff down, and passed stuff down, to create a compendium that amounts to what I call the Science of Changemaking. And that’s what we do here. We don’t make stuff up. We go to a system that was actually developed to move us from a lonely worldview to one we’re a big part of. Doing what we’re here to do, part of something bigger. It follows a path kind of like this: 1. Remove anything holding you back physically. 2. Heal the stressy crap in your body. 3. Build good energy. 4. Perceive how awesome you are. 5. Be how awesome you are. I am so grateful to be on this path to awesome with all you change-makers.

Hilton Garden Inn Honorable Mention: Hotel/Motel After opening the Hampton Inn in Waterloo over seven years ago, the success of the Hampton Inn created the need to open another property in Cedar Falls. We decided to choose another Hilton franchise and chose the Hilton Garden Inn for several reasons. One, we felt that Cedar Falls and Waterloo needed a new fullservice hotel to 7213 Nordic Drive, serve the needs Cedar Falls of the commu (319) 266-6611 nity. With over www.hiltongar6,000 square deninncedarfalls.com feet of banquet space, The Garden Grille & Bar, which seats over 60 people, as well as the two outdoor fire pit patios that seat over 75 people, created an option that few other properties could offer. Our excellent dining and overnight accommodations are what makes our full-service Hilton stand out among the rest. The Garden Grille & Bar, located inside the Hilton Garden Inn, provides wonderful fresh, farm-to-table menus created by our award-winning chef, Matt Hoecker. We also change our menus seasonally to provide the freshest that our local farms and dairies have to offer. It’s been a perfect place for “foodies” to meet. It’s also a great spot for after-work get-togethers at our bar to watch sports on our big-screen televisions or just chill out after a long day. Very simply, it’s our guests and our employees, most of which have been with us since opening our hotel last fall, that make the Hilton Garden Inn successful. If not for the awesome service of our well-trained staff, our guests would not have voted us to win these many awards after being open only one year! We are here to service our guests, whether it’s for the business or family traveler overnighting, or the gettogether place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We are proudest of this Best of the Best award! However, in just 10 months, we have also received the Cedar Valley’s Tourism Bureaus Hotel of the Year for 2013 and the prestigious Hilton “Spirit” Award, which is only given out to 10 Hilton Garden Inns in the nation

for outstanding customer service. Also, our chef’s won the People’s Choice Blue Ribbon at the Beers to You and Gourmet Too event in May. All of these awards are given because the public voted on them. So we say thank you to all of our guests and employees who have made it all possible. We are proud to say that our new Hilton Garden Inn hotel is the first Hilton Project Grow hotel in the Midwest. The Project Grow encompasses many different parts of the hotel, such as offering healthier menu items with fresh organic products, as well as growing our own herbs that our chef uses nightly in our menus. Also, Project Grow is a new Hilton design that offers an eco-friendly building and experience when you stay with us. We are proud to have the only nonchemical salt water pools in the eastern Iowa area, as well as a bicycle library that allows our guests to check out a bike for a ride on our local trail system. Having the trail system in our own backyard has been a great promotion to our guests who love to go for a hike, bike or run during their stay with us. We also are still planning on creating a walking area on our property where a small pond is located. A bridge over the pond will show off local plants and wild flowers that grow naturally in the Midwest. We will also be creating this in order to allow our wedding guests to have outdoor ceremonies right on the property with a gazebo and walking paths through the fields.

EVERYDAY BEGINS WITH AMIGOS Amigos wants to thank all our customers, they are what keeps us going, Amigos has built great relationships in the community and this means so much to us personally and to our business. Thanks to everyone who voted for Amigos in the best of the best competition! We specialize in bringing our recipes directly from Jalisco and Michoacan, which are two of the 31 states in Mexico, to serve authentic Mexican cuisine. Amigos Mexican Restaurant is owned by 33 year old Oscar Valdivia and is a family business. Oscar Valdivia, an American Citizen, is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico. Oscar began working in the restaurant business 13 years ago. In the beginning of the year 2000, Oscar moved from La Piedad, Mexico to Chicago, Illinois where his Father (now deceased) lived and worked as an architect. Oscar was 20 at the time. He studied Industrial Engineering for two years at the Universidad Tecnologico de La Piedad before making the decision to move to the United States. Upon arrival to the United States, Oscar worked with his Father, making blue prints for house plans, for six months. Next, Oscar was invited to Rochester, MN and began working at a restaurant called Las Margaritas. He started out as dishwasher for 15 days and for the following 6 months he cleaned tables and took chips and salsa to the tables. He knew almost no English but believed in hard work and persistence. This was the beginning of his path as an entrepreneur. In 2001 he moved to Iowa City and worked at El Ranchero as a waiter for one year. In 2002 he moved to Waukee, IA and worked as a manger at Los Tres Amigos. In 2003 he co-owned La Finca in Mason City. In 2004 he moved to Independence, IA and co-owned El Dorado. In 2005 he moved to Waterloo and opened his own restaurant as sole proprietor, called Amigos. In 2008 he relocated Amigos from Waterloo to Cedar Falls, and has been in Cedar Falls at 5809 University Avenue College Square ever since then. In December of 2012 Oscar married Francesca and in May 2013 their beautiful daughter Gabriela Araceli was born. Amigos Mexican Restaurant serves authentic Mexican cuisine. Everything is made fresh in house. Amigos opens every day at 11:00am. The hours are Monday through Thursday 11:00am to 10:00pm, Friday & Saturday 11:00am - 10:30pm, Sundays 11:00am - 9:00pm. Rydell Chevrolet First Place: Auto Service, Auto Body Repair, Oil Change Service, Transmission and Brake Service Honorable Mention: Automotive Salesperson, Mike Potter, Auto Dealership and Car Wash At Rydell Chevrolet in Waterloo, our guests are always No. 1. An unconditional dedication to service is what has set Rydell at the forefront of sales volume and market effectiveness in the Cedar Valley and eastern Iowa. This year, Rydell Chevrolet won first place for Auto Service, Oil Change Service, Auto Body Repair , Brake Service and Transmission Service. In addition, the dealership won honorable mention for Auto Dealerships and Mike Potter also earned honorable in the Cedar Valley for Automotive Salesperson. “We couldn’t do what we do effectively if it weren’t for our 135 employees and the thousands of customers in the Cedar Valley who make Rydell Chevrolet their destination for sales, service, auto body repair and parts,” said Matt Halbur, general manager. After 29 years in business, Rydell Chevrolet has made many improvements in the way they sell and service vehicles. In 2004, Rydell made a significant investment in the infrastructure of the Waterloo dealership by adding a new service drive, quick lube and car wash. In 2012, Rydell stepped up and remodeled again utilizing the Essential Brand Elements that GM has laid in place for the next generation of Chevrolet Dealerships. This makes Rydell the only Chevy dealer in the Cedar Valley who has completed this to date. “We want our guests to be comfortable in every aspect of ownership from sales to service, and our facility needs to represent that,” Halbur said. The Rydell Quick Lube offers a noappointment 13-minute oil change from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. “We typically service between 65 to 100 vehicles per day in our Quick Lube” Halbur said. “Our guests love the convenience and peace of mind knowing that we are taking complete care of their vehicle.” Rydell’s vast inventories of parts and accessories make it easy to have the part in stock and get your vehicle fixed right the first time.

“Bottom Line Pricing” is a hallmark at Rydell Chevrolet. All vehicles are priced up front with the best price, right on the windshield. Studies done by J.D. Power and Associates and other research groups have determined that most people dread the automobile-buying experience and find the negotiating process distasteful. The stress and time involved with purchasing a vehicle coupled with the uncertainty of knowing if you got the best deal makes lots of folks uncomfortable. Rydell has changed all that.

“We believe that buying a vehicle should be fun and stress-free,” said Jeff Smock, general sales manager. “Guests are treated in a friendly, professional and courteous manner.” Doing business this way represents a cultural change within the organization and industry. “It is an ethical and easy way of doing business,” Smock said, “and it serves our guests.” The price that you pay for a vehicle has nothing to do with a person’s negotiating skills — — that’s not the way Rydell does business. “No pushy salespeople, no high pressure, no negotiating and no game playing. We put our very best price on all of our vehicles upfront everyday, which makes buying a vehicle at Rydell quick and enjoyable,” Halbur said. “When you leave Rydell, you don’t have to wonder if you got the best deal. You know you did.” Rydell’s Mike Potter also received honorable mention as Automotive Salesperson. “Mike is truly a special salesperson,” Smock said. “His customers just

love him. Mike’s genuine concern for them and their needs is what keeps his customers coming back. Rydell is very proud of him.” Mike has been selling Chevrolets in the Cedar Valley for 24 years and has found a great home at Rydell Chevrolet. Along with selling vehicles, Mike enjoys being involved in many hobbies and organizations throughout the Cedar Valley. Rydell Chevrolet also has a fantastic pre-owned vehicle program. Bottom Line piece of mind, which includes the famous five-day like-it or return-it, 30-day exchange, and a 3-month/3,000 mile warranty on all pre-owned vehicles. If a guest is not happy with the preowned vehicle they purchased, just return it to Rydell within five days in the same condition for a 100 percent refund. They also can exchange the vehicle up to 30 days after the purchase. You can’t make a mistake and buy the wrong preowned vehicle atRydell. “We know loyalty is not given, but earned. That’s why we do what we do, we want customers for life,” Halbur said.

Lost Island Waterpark First Place: Family entertainment I Local/State Day Trip, State/Midwest Weekend Trip Honorable Mention: First place to go on a first date The Lost Island Waterpark opened in 2000 with Adventure Golf and GoKarts. The waterpark opened in 2001 and has been growing ever since. Lost Island continues to research the leisure industry, adding amenities to keep Lost Island a first-class park, retaining the title of the largest waterpark in Iowa. The past year, personal cabanas were added as an amenity for guests. These have become very popular with many weekends having waiting lists. The cabanas feature WiFi, a personal refrigerator, large locker, lounge chairs and ceiling fans. An upper deck bar area has been added with shade sails and large lounge-type chairs and tables and has hosted tattoo contests, wedding showers, board meetings and other events throughout the summer. A handicap lift was recently added in the Blue Iguana interactive area to assist individuals with special needs into the pool. Lost Island is proud to have hosted such groups as Aspire, Goodwill and Vinton School for the Blind. The Flying Gecko, a zip line new this year, is 65 feet tall and stretches 660 feet long from tower to tower. Riders begin at Lost Island’s golf and go kart track, zip over to the water park and then return back. Zip liners travel a combined distance of over 1,300 feet at 20 mph. The zip line is open to all riders at least ten years of age and between 70 and 250 pounds. Most recently the synergy of opening the KOA campground across the road has added another dimension to the Lost Island Waterpark destination. Boasting 150+ campsites and nine deluxe cabins, along with a bike trail, fishing, swimming, paddle boats, a dog park, disc golf and more, there’s always something to do. The lifeguard staff has received honors from Jeff Ellis & Associates for performance. Safety is a very important aspect of the park. Lifeguards must be trained in waterpark safety in addition to being certified in all normal lifeguarding skills, and are required to attend in-service sessions throughout the summer. If you are a regular at Lost Island you will witness situations staged to test the lifeguards’ reaction time. Clear inner tubes are used

in the wave pool so staff can quickly spot someone having trouble. Many of the food service and front gate staff are also trained in first aid and CPR. Tied in with the safety initiative is a focus on families and providing activities for all ages. Kid-friendly food and toddler areas along with the extreme rides create a mix for families to enjoy. There is no charge for parking or tube rental at Lost Island. This is unique as in most water parks you are dragging your rented tube throughout the park all day so you can get your deposit back at the end of the day.

Western Home Communities At Western Home Communities, success is about relationships. “Life is all about relationships, so if we don’t have solid relationships with all the folks that are involved, including family members and employees, it just doesn’t work,” said Kris Hansen, CEO at Western Home. “We certainly try to lead.” 420 E. 11th St., But one has Cedar Falls. to lead in “the (319) 277-2141 right way,” Han www.westernsen said. “So, you homecommunities. hold yourselves to org pretty high standards.” Western Home Communities focuses on a full continuum of care for adults 55+, which includes independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and home health services through the recently-created atHome with Western Home. Two operating philosophies that guide Western Home are “people first” and “empathy,” Hansen said. Western Home Communities is one of

just two Iowa retirement communities listed in the Leading Age/Ziegler 100, a list of the largest non-profit senior living communities in the country. Western Home Communities ranks as the second-largest retirement community in Iowa, with more than 820 residents in its various Cedar Falls residential buildings. Included in that number are more than 600 on the campus off South Main Street and

another 216 at its downtown location. In August, Western Home Communities received approval for a new plat that will open up 11 new building lots on 8.5 acres to the east of the existing development in southern Cedar Falls. When it’s completed, it will include seven new duplex retirement villas, like those booming on the south campus. Part of that expansion is recreating the

traditional institutional nursing home. New nursing cottages for people having memory issues and dementia will be built in 2014. Linda Bowman, spokeswoman for Western Home Communities, said the new cottages provide the same quality round-the-clock skilled nursing care, but will look and function like a family home (see architectural design above). Each dementia cottage will house 16 people, and each will have their own private bedroom and bathroom. Bowman said these freestanding units will be the first of their kind in Iowa. Western Home Communities plans to eventually build enough cottages for all of its longterm care residents. “It really creates a different way we’re going to take care of our residents,” Hansen said. The cottages will be built in 2014. A wellness and community center will be started by late next year as well. Another retirement community is also on the drawing board because there is so much demand for villas and independent living. Hansen said the homes and apartments sell as fast as they can build them. “Well more than 100 people are on our waiting list. We’ve got a real demand,” he said.

We view your trust as a responsibility to keep moving forward and keep earning your respect. By this time next year, we’ll be well on our way to creating an entirely new kind of nursing home: cottages that look and function like a family home, giving residents the dignity they deserve and the daily spontaneity they desire.
