Distance Learning at WCCC Distance learning courses offer convenience and flexibility to learners. At WCCC, you can choose from several instructional delivery modes that reduce travel time and cost by allowing you to learn at convenient times and places. Distance learning is an educational experience in which you and your instructor are separated by physical distance and teaching/learning is achieved through delivery modes such as online courses and interactive videoconference courses.
Online Courses
Accessing Online Courses
Online courses offer the opportunity to take courses using your home computer or a computer located at another site such as a public library or the WCCC computer labs. You do all of your coursework online: read assignments, take part in discussions, submit work, and interact with instructors and classmates via the Internet. Although online courses are not self-paced, you can complete your course work at times convenient to you. Online courses are not suited for everyone, however. You should be able to devote at least six hours of study, reading and work time per week for each threecredit online class in which you are enrolled. Students who work well on their own; are familiar with the Internet; have good reading comprehension skills; and possess basic typing skills are best prepared to succeed in online courses. Find out if online courses are right for you. Go to http://wccc.edu/blackboard and click on Getting Started and Basic Skills and Requirements. Getting Started contains a Blackboard tour and a quiz on online learning. If you have questions after this, call 1-800-262-2103, ext. 5921 or send e-mail to blackboardsupport@wccc.edu
Blackboard may be accessed by going to the MyWCCC Portal. To access Blackboard, go to http://my.wccc.edu, log in to the portal with your username and password, and click on the Blackboard course link to the right. Contact the IT Help Desk at 1-800-262-2103, ext. 5921 for more information.
COMPUTER REQUIREMENTS FOR ONLINE COURSES Basic computer skills are required in order to be successful in online classes. Students should have the following minimal skills: 1) save and send files via an email attachment; 2) navigate to sites on the Internet; 3) create documents with Microsoft Word software; and 4) download documents to specific folders on your computer. Students who lack these basic skills may find online courses very difficult. Since much of the communication with classmates and instructors will be written, students should be prepared to spend a lot of time reading, composing and typing. AOL Internet service is not compatible with Blackboard. We recommend using another Internet Service Provider to access WCCC online courses. If you use Netscape or Internet Explorer as your browser while connected to the Internet via AOL, you still may be “timed out” of your connection to the Internet unexpectedly, such as during a test. In addition, you may not be able to utilize all of the Blackboard tools properly which could cause problems in completing your course requirements. Some “low cost” ISPs encounter similar problems.
Live Interactive Videoconference Courses Interactive videoconferencing enables students at the WCCC centers - Bushy Run, Fayette County, Greene County, Indiana County, Laurel, Mon Valley and New Kensington - to enroll in courses that may not usually be available at the centers. Using Blackboard Collaborate, a Webconferencing platform, students at two or more sites can participate in the same class session at the same time. Courses which are delivered in this mode are designated by VID next to the course title. For more information about distance learning at WCCC, go to http://wccc.edu/blackboard, or contact Kathleen Keefe, director of Learning Resources, at 1-00-262-2103, ext. 4101, or keefek@wccc.edu.

TOUCHSTONE Center for Crafts & WCCC Summer Classes Open to artists of all levels
Classes meet Monday-Friday at Touchstone Center for Crafts 1049 Wharton Furnace Road, Farmington Credits will be awarded by WCCC. June 3-7 • (ART 185-TS, Clay I- Handbuilding Ceramics, 3 credits) Wheel-Thrown Pottery (Beginner-Intermediate) Joe Sendek
Immerse your mind, heart and spirit into the ancient and expressive world of clay! This week will allow you a chance to focus, explore and expand your artistic and creative self. Especially helpful to those with basic throwing skills, this class is designed to encourage the development of new skills and techniques with the goal of being able to fire work in electric, gas and Raku kilns. Bring your tools, ideas and creative energies for a week that will lift you to the next level of working with clay.
June 10-14 • (ART 143-TS, Printmaking, 3 credits)
A Conversation about the Earth by Way of Poetry, Printmaking & Paper (All Levels) Kathy Mendus Dlugos & Marie Pavlicek-Wehrli “For a time, I rest in the grace of the world, and am free” writes poet Wendell Berry. Mindful of the larger studio (the woods) that surrounds us, we’ll bring the natural world into printmaking projects, incorporating elements from Touchstone’s woods while we simultaneously consider various contemporary poets whose subject is the earth. We’ll use these ideas, as well as our surroundings, to jumpstart a sequence of prints (monotypes, rubbings, etc.) and then assemble these prints into a handmade book. The work of our hands, as well as our reading and discussions, will serve to deepen our awareness for the grace of the world, its riches and, increasingly, its fragility. Experimentation with found and recycled materials is encouraged; good craft will be equally stressed.
June 24-28• (ART 188-TS, Textiles, 3 credits)
Transforming the 2D Fabric Surface into 3D Sculpture Leisa Rich This is an exciting, exploratory, textile surface design class suitable for everyone... with a brand-new twist! We will experiment with a versatile material called Fosshape that just came out on the art/craft market, in addition to using traditional cottons and other fabrics, as the base for a variety of monoprinting methods that will inject rich color into the surfaces. Several manipulative techniques that will be demonstrated in the workshop, such as stamping, stenciling, and hand painting, will be added to heighten color, dimension, and contrast. We will use the Fosshape cloth, a steamer provided by the studio, and an inexpensive heat embossing gun that students will bring, to turn the Fosshape into a gorgeous, three-dimensional vessel. Basic hand embroidery stitches will further transform the flat to dimensional and the smooth to textural. Each student will leave with a fantastic length of cloth perfect for inspired projects to be completed at home, as well as a finished, scuptural vessel!

General Information Admission
Credit for Prior Learning
WCCC has an open door admissions policy. High school graduates or those who hold a GED high school equivalency are granted admission to the college. In addition, individuals age 18 or older who have not earned a high school diploma or a GED are admitted to the college if they can demonstrate their potential to benefit from the college experience. After successfully completing 30 college-level credits at WCCC, they may be eligible for GED certification. It is important to note that admission to the college does not guarantee admission to those programs which have special entrance requirements or enrollment in certain courses which have prerequisites. All new students must complete the Application for Admission and pay a $15 nonrefundable processing fee. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at 724-925-4077, Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. or Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Credit for prior learning may be granted by any of the following methods: transfer of credit, recommendation of secondary schools, Advanced Placement Test, Credit by Examination, Assessment of Experiential Learning, and College Level Examination Program® (CLEP). Military veterans should submit military assessments to the Admissions Office for evaluation. For more information, contact the Admissions Office at 724-925-4077.
PLACEMENT TESTING The placement test assesses a student’s skill levels in reading, composition, mathematics and computer skills. All students are required to take the placement test or validate satisfactory completion of prerequisites before registering for mathematics courses, English courses, Microcomputer Concepts, some Office Technology courses and courses with a prerequisite of RDG 080 - Intermediate Reading. Students are encouraged to prepare for the placement test by reviewing these areas. Links to preparatory materials are available at wccc.edu; click on Admissions and Aid. EXEMPTIONS • Students who have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university upon receipt of college transcripts • Transfer students upon receipt of college transcripts that validate satisfactory completion of prerequisites in English, mathematics and computers Note: Programs such as Nursing and other Allied Health Programs require placement testing for all students. Students may schedule the placement test as soon as the Admissions Office has received a completed Application for Admission. The test is given at the Youngwood campus most weekdays and at the college’s education centers on a limited basis. Call 724925-6893 to schedule the placement test at the Youngwood campus. To schedule a test at an education center, call the center. Students who require accommodations due to a disability should call 724-925-4189 to discuss specific needs. Students who complete an exam with a minimum score can earn from 3 to 14 semester hours, depending on the exam. The cost for CLEP testing is $92 per exam. This includes a $15 fee payable to WCCC and a $77 fee payable directly to the College Board (provider of CLEP). CLEP test are scheduled by appointment only. Tuition Reduction for Older Adults If you are a Pennsylvania resident age 60 or older, you are eligible for a 50 percent reduction in tuition when you enroll in credit classes. Financial Aid WCCC participates in a number of financial aid programs to assist students in paying for their education. These programs include grants, loans and college work-study programs. Eligibility for these programs is based on financial need, which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These applications are available from high school counselors, public libraries and the WCCC Financial Aid Office. The application is also available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The Direct Loan Program is a low-interest loan program that permits students to borrow funds to help pay for college costs. There are limits to the amount that students can borrow based upon their eligibility and federal guidelines. An example would be that a first-year dependent student can borrow $3,500 for the academic year. Applications are available online at www.studentloans.gov. If you have attended another college and will transfer your credits back to that school after a summer session, your financial aid must be processed by that school for the summer term. For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office at 724-925-4063 or go online at wccc.edu and click on Admissions & Aid.
Scholarships WCCC offers a number of scholarships that provide financial aid assistance you won't have to pay back. Some scholarships are based on financial need, academic history, community involvement, a specific program of study or other criteria. For more information on scholarships, contact Cheri Kramer at 724-925-4215 or go to wccc.edu and click on Admissions & Aid.
