THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY CANADIAN HORSESHOEING CHAMPIONSHIPS is a valuable resource in educating and developing competitive Canadian talent for International Blacksmith events. Competitors and public alike share the opportunity to gain knowledge and participate in a unique experience. The competition will once again conduct all classes using traditional coke fires. In addition, the organizing committee of the CHC tries to incorporate an educational feature into their event which addresses issues of concern to the horse-owning public as well as the horseshoer. This year's competition will be held in the Big Top at Stampede Park.

JUDGE: TRAVIS KOONS Travis Koons CJF, is a second generation farrier from Hemet, California. He and his wife Nicole Koons are the proud new parents of Cadence Koons, a beautiful and happy one year old girl. Travis started his horseshoeing business in 1994 after apprenticing with his father Keith Koons for several years. Travis has spent his entire life around horses, as a rider, a trainer, and a farrier, this has given him a very well rounded understanding and fondness of the horse. He has enjoyed a very diversified career and has been fortunate to shoe many different disciplines and breeds, currently Travis is shoeing mostly Dressage horses. Travis has been on the American Farriers Team twice (2006, 2007), and the WCB Horseshoeing Team four times (2008, 2009, 2010, 2012). He was the WCB National Champion in 2008, 2009 and again in 2011, and he won the Vector North American Challenge Cup in 2011. As a clinician he is devoted to sharing his ideas, knowledge and experiences with all who aspire to shoe horses well.


STRIKER OPTION *To facilitate better quality work and promotion of teamwork, strikers will be optional for use in Classes A and B. Strikers are only allowed to work the fire, brush shoes and use the sledgehammer to assist the competitors.

TEAM TRACKING *The CHC will select the recipients of the four member World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition entries by tracking the accumulated scores of the four people that YOU identify as your team throughout the contest. This will encourage teamwork and support continuity, providing the best opportunity for success.

Intermediate Division: In an attempt to make the contest more accessible to entry level competitors, the CHC will provide 10 minutes extra per class for those identified in this division. Our goal is to encourage and enable junior participants to not only complete the classes, but become competitive as well. Bar Shoe Chain Challenge: The CHC would like to invite everyone to send us a barshoe to add to the Worlds Largest Barshoe Chain. Started down east some 20 years ago, it has grown to over 40 feet in length, representing horseshoers from across Canada. Every year at the start of the Canadian Horseshoeing Championships, we will add the collected shoes to the chain, symbolically joining our industry in the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie. Participate as an individual or as an association, singular efforts or collectively, but feel free to join in on the truly unique opportunity. Davenport Challenge: Expanding on a concept that was the progenitor of the AFJ/WCBC mail-in shoe contest, the CHC is incorporating the Davenport Challenge into the contest for 2012. Anyone can participate in this contest without having to travel. The shoe to be forged is WCBC ARAB toe weight of 12” of 3/8” x 3/4” flat (305mm of 10mm x 20mm). Six nail holes plain stamped for Mustad concave 5 nail, 130mm wide. All specimens will be judged according to the WCBC standards with half the entry monies going to a jackpot prize with the other half of the entry monies going to a scholarship fund. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CLASS A - Stampede Warm-up (light draft)

CLASS C – Keg Shoe Classic

Time Limit: 75 minutes for the open class.

Time Limit: 65 minutes for the open class. 75 minutes for the intermediate class.

85 minutes for the intermediate class.

*Strikers optional 1) Shoe one front foot with 13mm x 25mm flat barstock – plain stamped for appropriate nail. Toe clip to be hammer drawn. Shoe to be a cob style with outside bevel to follow the hoof wall. Shoe to have a definite inside and outside branch profile. 2) Hind Roadster specimen from 290mm of 13mm x 25mm flat, 130mm wide, no minimum toe thickness. Six nail holes. Shoe to be plain stamped for E6 nail. Toe clip to hammer drawn.

*Blind judging system protocol will apply in this class. All parts will be judged during class time. Open Class: 1) Shoe a front foot with keg shoe of your choice. 2) Shoe a hind foot with a hand made concave, quarter clipped. Use concave barstock of your choice.

CLASS B - Light draft hind

CLASS D - Bar Shoe Eagle Eye

Time Limit: 70 minutes for the open class. 80 minutes for the intermediate class.

*Strikers optional 1) Shoe one hind foot with appropriate flat stock– ¾ fullered with toe clip. Hammer drawn. 2) Judges' choice shoe to be forged and completed during class time.

Intermediate Class: 1) Shoe a front and a hind foot with keg shoes provided.

Time Limit: 20 minutes for the open class. 30 minutes for the intermediate class.

1) Contestants to forge ¾ fullered bar shoe to specimen provided. 2) Contestants will have 15 seconds to examine and measure the foot. Appropriate bar stock to be used. Punched for appropriate nail.
