GPNZ media release: New funding welcomed as part of the package of measures to increase immunisation uptake

GPNZ Media Release April 5 2024

• See the attached link to access the latest update on immunisation.

• Te Whatu Ora has confirmed a funding package to help support general practice to pre-call, recall or refer parents and caregivers of newborn babies for their 6-week immunisations.

• The funding package includes a base payment to general practice of $40 for every pēpi upon completion of their 6week immunisation, regardless of where the vaccination was delivered. An additional $40 ($80 in total) will be provided to general practice if pēpi meets the high-priority criteria (Māori, Pacific, Community Services Card, Deprivation Quintile five and rural).

• The funding is available from April 1 2024 to June 30 2025. Further detail on how funding will be distributed to general practice has been provided to Primary Health Organisations and will ensure access to funding can be backdated to 6-week immunisation events from April 1 2024.

• Te Whatu Ora supports a best practice approach, consistent with the RNZCGP Foundation Standard certification for general practices that provides the quality assurance and control processes for the delivery of childhood immunisation recalls and pre-call processes. PHOs will be funded to coordinate this initiative and facilitate best practice pre-call/recall and referral processes in general practice.

• A media statement is available on the Te Whatu Ora website.

• In 2023, the Cardio-Respiratory Special Interest Group of Physiotherapy New Zealand, developed the Long COVID Return to Exercise Flow Chart. This tool aims to guide healthcare providers in offering accurate recommendations for individuals with Long COVID as they resume physical activities. Its primary goal is to guide screening questions and support decision-making in the process of returning to activities or sport. It adopts a cautious approach to ensure return to activities and exercise is safe and does not cause a worsening of symptoms, taking into account post-exertional malaise. There is guidance on when to consider an onward referral to a cardiorespiratory physiotherapist and a detailed table outlining how to progress exercise without exacerbating symptoms.
