Salvation Army of Clev. Co. kicks off Annual Red Kettle Campaign $100,000 GOAL The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign is back in Cleveland County, ushering in the festive spirit of Christmas. The Red Kettle Campaign is The Salvation Army’s primary fundraising initiative, providing life-changing programs and services throughout the year, including food assistance programs, shelter for people experiencing homelessness, emergency financial assistance, youth programs, and emergency disaster services. On Monday, November 13 at 10:00a.m. at the Hobby Lobby Store, 1728 East Dixon Blvd., Shelby, Santa showed up to be the first bell ringer for the season. Joining Santa was Sergeants Joseph and Patty Rodgers and

Chris Mabry, Salvation Army; Shelby City Mayor Stan Anthony; Cleveland County Commissioner Ronnie Whetstine; and Rodney Henderson, Hobby Lobby Store Manager. “Hobby Lobby and the Salvation Army partner all across the United States to support the Red Kettle Campaign. We are glad to be one of the sights that people may donate to the campaign,” said Rodney Henderson, Hobby Lobby Store Manager. The Salvation Army of Cleveland County stands as a beacon of hope in the community, providing social services for people experiencing unexpected financial hardship. The Salvation Army relies on the money raised through the Red Kettle campaign to provide Christmas to local families

The first Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign was Santa, (aka Mike Ledford, a community volunteer) who has rung the bell for the Red Kettle Campaign for over ten years.

Kicking off the Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign at the Hobby Lobby store, Shelby are L-R: Ronnie Whetstine, Cleveland County Commissioner; Rodney Henderson, Hobby Lobby Store Manager; Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony; Salvation Army Board Chair Chris Mabry, Santa, Will Rodgers, coordinator, Volunteer Bell Ringers; and Sergeants Patty and Joseph Rodgers, Salvation Army. and safeguard the well-being of people in need through year-round programming and social services. “The Salvation Army has an unwavering commitment to helping people in need, and the Red Kettle campaign is a critical source of funding that helps us meet that commitment,” said Sgt. Joseph Rodgers of The Salvation Army of Cleveland County. “The funds the community gives to the Red Kettle ensures families will not have to make agonizing choices between basic needs like housing, food, and medical care.” About the 2023 Campaign: The 2023 Red Kettle local campaign goal is $100,000. Over 300 families and 600 children will have a Christmas. The Red Kettle Campaign ends December 23, and kettles are in eight locations around town, with one in Boiling Springs, and one in Kings Mountain. History of Red Kettle Campaign in Cleveland County: The community has come together each year since 1965 to support the Red Kettle Campaign by having volunteers from a variety of organizations ring the bell at locations across the county. For many families it has become a tradition to volunteer a day to ring the bell for the Salvation Army. Many people remember when the Red Kettle was in front of First National Bank on Lafayette Street and customers would stop and donate on their way into our out of the bank. Now the Red Kettles are located at Hobby Lobby, Walmart, Big Lots, and several Ingles stores.

Abigal Elmore, daughter of Ashley Elmore, contributes to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign at the Hobby Lobby on East Dixon Blvd., Shelby. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteering as a bell ringer is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community while spreading the season’s joy. To See SALVATION ARMY, Page 19 Like Us On

By Gary Miller A few years ago, I bought a really nice and comfortable lock-on stand along with an expensive ladder climbing system to go along with it. I had been hunting the Midwest for years before that and was always fighting comfort because I stayed in the stand for hours. I figured if I was going to sit for hours, I need to be able to sit as comfortably as GARY MILLER possible. I made the right call. During that time, or maybe even before that, I begin to have the same ideas about those things that I spend the most time in at home. I thought, while there are plenty of places to go inexpensive and generic, the places I spend the most time ought to be as comfortable as possible. And if there is ever a reason to spend more money on any item, it ought to be for the places and things where I spend the most time. My list is fairly small because there’s only so much time in each day. So, here ya go. I spend about 6 hours each day in bed. I want a good bed that allows me to wake up without aches and pains. My family and I sit in our living room and watch TV, or just talk. After a day of work, I want a couch and recliner that feels like I’m home. A lawnmower. Yes, a lawnmower. I calculated that I mow my grass 8 months out the year. I don’t need something that breaks down in a few months or even a few years. My office chair is a must. I spend hours in it each day; probably more than I do anywhere else besides my bed. My truck. I travel a lot. I’m 6’2” tall. I don’t like cars. I like the seat in my truck to feel like my recliner (Thank you, Toyota, for getting that done.) Frosted Flakes. Never, I mean NEVER think that any generic flakey cereal is going to taste like the real thing. And last of all. Eternity. I’m going to spend a long time there. Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths articles for 21 years. He has also written five books which include compilations of his articles and a father/son devotional. He also speaks at wild-game dinners and men’s events for churches and associations. gary@outdoortruths.org

Consider these 13 gratifying Thanksgiving facts Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family and friends and reflect on one’s blessings. In 2022, Canadian Thanksgiving takes place on October 10, while Americans celebrate on November 24. In anticipation of these holidays, here are some interesting facts about the Thanksgiving celebration. 1. American Thanksgiving is largely modeled on a 17th century harvest feast shared by the English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe. 2. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. It is based on European harvest festivals. 3. The National Turkey Federation says around 45 million turkeys will be eaten on Thanksgiving, which equates to about 720 million pounds of turkey being consumed (with the average turkey size being 16 pounds). 4. The Butterball hotline answers roughly 100,000 calls every year on its tur-

key question hotline. 5. In 1953, the Swanson company overestimated the number of frozen turkeys it would sell for the holiday season by 26 tons. Rather than waste the meat, Swanson sliced it up, repackaged it and created the first frozen TV dinners. 6. Thanksgiving in America may be older than many recognize. While Thanksgiving is largely tied to the 17th century settlers, the National Parks Service says in 1565 Spanish settlers in St. Augustine (now Florida) celebrated by having a meal to which they invited the native Seloy tribe. The Spanish served pork stew, sea biscuits, red wine, and garbanzo beans. Some say the Seloy contributed turkey, venison and maize.

7. Thanksgiving didn’t become a civic holiday until Abraham Lincoln made it one after the Civil War tragedy. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday on October 20, 1864. 8. The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as “pilgrims.” They used the word “separatists” as they were separating themselves from a larger belief system. 9. In addition to Canada and the United States, Grenada, Liberia, the Philippines, Saint Lucia, and the Netherlands celebrate their own versions of Thanksgiving. 10. Each year, the American president “pardons” a turkey from slaughter on Thanksgiving. This tradition dates back to when Abraham Lincoln’s son was upset that his family’s turkey that was

going to be killed for Thanksgiving dinner. 11. According to the U.S. Calorie Control Council (CCC), an average American may consume 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving Day. 12. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an annual tradition. People line the parade route in New York City or tune in to watch the parade on television. It originated in 1924 and the famed balloons were added in 1927. 13. Apple pie is the pie of choice for Thanksgiving, even though pumpkin pie is prevalent this time of year. Thanksgiving is a popular holiday in Canada and the U.S. Many traditions have been borne of the holiday, and it is a favorite time of year for many people.

Intelligent.com Ranks Cleveland Community College Among Best Prominent higher education resource guide announces top accolades for 2024

Two apprentices, in the HVAC-R program at Cleveland Community College Maddox Brown, left and Ben Ledbetter, right participated in Apprenticeship NC’s annual North Carolina State Fair competition. They both finished in the top 10!

Local Apprentices Earn Top Honors in Statewide Competition Two apprentices in the Apprenticeship Cleveland program at Cleveland Community College showed off their skills at the North Carolina State Fair in October. Maddox Brown and Ben Ledbetter competed in the HVAC-R competition hosted by the North Carolina Community College System and Apprenticeship NC. Brown, an apprentice with Shelby Heating and Air, finished third in the competition. Ledbetter, an apprentice with Miller & Condrey HVAC/Refrigeration, finished sixth. “The state fair was a great chance for me to show my skills and show off how good our college’s program is,” said Brown. “I enjoyed getting to show off the success of the apprenticeship program at Cleveland Community College. The state fair is something that I think every apprentice at Cleveland should want to go and compete in.” Ledbetter thanked his employer and CCC for the apprenticeship opportunity. “The state fair competition was a good chance to demonstrate what I have learned in class as well as in the field,” he said. “I thought it was a very worthwhile experience and I was grateful and honored to represent my company and school in the competition.” Brown and Ledbetter had to go through 13 stations in the competition. Each station tested different skills that they would use on the job, such as talking to customers, brazing and flaring skills (joining copper tubing by brazing and flare fittings) and troubleshooting skills. They also had to take a written knowledge test on

basic and advanced refrigeration. “I am proud of Ben and Maddox for representing Cleveland Community College and their employers to a high standard that shows our students’ willingness to learn on the job and in the classroom,” said Russ Hamilton, air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration instructor. This was CCC’s first year participating in the competition. Leaders of Apprenticeship Cleveland said the competition showcases the effectiveness of programs like Apprenticeship Cleveland and the skills students acquire. Apprenticeship opportunities play a pivotal role in shaping the future of learners, allowing them to pursue their educational goals and embark on promising career paths. “It was an excellent opportunity for our local apprentices to show off trade knowledge and skills while representing themselves and their community at the state level,” said Josh Harrison, operations manager of Shelby Heating and Air. According to the North Carolina Community College System’s website, this annual event featured more than 100 apprentices competing for cash and prizes in a variety of skilled trades over five days. In addition to the HVAC-R competition, apprentices competed in electrical, carpentry, plumbing and masonry events. In their inaugural season, the Yetis women’s volleyball team had a 21-win season, finished third in the conference, and made it to the final 4 of the Region 10 championship.

Volleyball Team Makes History On August 17, 2023, the Yetis made history— again. The women’s volleyball team stepped onto the court at Wake Tech Community College to play its first-ever game. Head Coach Jamie Wilson had coached winning teams at Crest High School for 17 years, but this would be her first season as a college coach. She wondered if she would be good enough for the college level, plus she had to learn the art of recruiting, one concern a high school coach doesn’t have. “Recruiting for the first season was hard,” she said. “Lots of players didn’t want to take a chance on a first-year program. The eight girls who chose to come are very special.” That group of special players set lofty goals at the beginning of the season. They didn’t want to just be the College’s first team; they wanted to be the first winning team in Yetis volleyball history. With that goal in mind, the players and Wilson went to work. “They gave 100% every day,” said Wilson. The team won that very first game against Wake Tech, went on to have a 21-12 overall winning season and finished third in the conference’s regular season with an 8-3 record. In postseason play, the team made it to the

semifinals of the Region 10 conference where they lost to the reigning national champion Richard Bland College. The loss was tough, but the team and its coach were already successful. The players did what they set out Jamie Wilson, Region 10 to do. They will go Coach of the Year. down in Yetis history as the first winning volleyball team, and the coach who wasn’t sure she was good enough was named Region 10 Coach of the Year. “I was shocked and honored,” said Wilson. “There are some great coaches in Region 10, so to be chosen by them makes it very special, especially because it was my first year coaching college.” Wilson went on to say that she would not have gotten the award without her team. “We started as strangers from different places with different personalities, and we became a family. Avoid driving under the influence Celebrations frequently involve entertaining guests or heading out for nights on the town to enjoy the company of others. Often food and beverages are part of the fun, and that includes alcoholic beverages, which may flow a little more readily during festive occasions. Niznik Behavioral Health says crash fatality rates involving alcohol increase by about five times during holidays. Roughly 131 people die in crashes involving alcohol each holiday, compared to 25 deaths during non-holidays, according to data compiled for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System between 2013 and 2017. The numbers continue to grow. According to MoneyGeek, driving under the influence-related fatalities were 23 percent higher in 2021 than 2016. Among the holidays with the highest rates of DUI, Independence Day and other summer holidays top the list, but impaired driving also is prevalent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. It’s perfectly alright to have fun in social situations. However, that fun should involve responsible behavior, particularly when consuming alcohol. Here’s how to enjoy celebrations

while also playing it safe. • Take driving off the table. When planning social occasions, remove the need to drive entirely. Ensure the party location is within walking distance for guests, or at a convenient spot accessible by public transportation. Hosts can encourage guests to utilize taxis or rideshare services so everyone can leave their cars at home. • Take the emphasis off of alcohol. Plan events that do not necessarily need to be drinking-heavy. Experiential events, such as escape rooms, crafting sessions, culinary demonstrations, and others can shift the focus away from drinking. • Serve alcohol early. If alcoholic beverages will be served, have a cut-off time when these drinks no longer will be served. This way guests will have a chance to recover and sober up before leaving. • Provide drink vouchers. Limit how much guests drink by setting a quota. Work with an establishment so that each party-goer only gets a set number of drink tokens or tickets. When they’re used up, then they no longer will

be served. • Make food a priority. Shift the focus from drinks to food. Those who have filled up on plenty of snacks or a big meal may be less likely to over-indulge. • Change your venue. A gathering at a bar may set the tone that drinking will be prioritized. Look for party venues where drinking may not be allowed, such as church or school party rooms, or not as accessible, such as a BYOB restaurant. • Always have a sober chaperone. At each event, one or more people should make the pledge to stay sober so they can ensure the safety of guests. This may mean driving them home themselves or arranging for transportation. Festivities may include alcohol, but hosts and party planners should take steps to reduce the likelihood that guests will drive while under the influence.

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

Divine Dining (3rd Part of “Leftovers” Series) Imagine inviting the Creator of the universe to a dinner party that you are hosting. He is going to be the guest of honor. Your preparations for that important day would be extensive. You would want him to DANYALE PATTERSON have a 5-star experience and serve him the highest quality food possible. Not only would he get topnotch service, but you would ensure that he is served first. Why would you go to so much trouble? I believe the realization of how good, loving, merciful, and faithful our Heavenly Father has been to us, propels us to love and serve him with all our might. Psalm 116:1 (AMP) says, “I love the LORD because He hears [and continues to hear] My voice and my supplications (my pleas, my cries, my specific needs).” Dishonor Vs. Honor God has always required His people to

give Him their best. In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to bring their best animals for sacrifice and to offer their first fruits to the Lord. God rebukes the Israelites for offering blemished and sick animals as sacrifices. He tells them that they are dishonoring Him by treating Him with such disrespect. (Malachi 1:3) In the New Testament, Jesus memorializes a woman who came with an alabaster box of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head. She washed his feet with her tears and her hair. (Luke 7:36-50) Wow, what a powerful demonstration of honor to God. Giving our best is a way to worship and glorify God. When we give Him our best, we show that we value Him above all else, and we demonstrate our love and gratitude for all that He has done for us. PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Father, as my Creator and Savior, you deserve my all-out devotion and commitment. I praise your holy name. Forgive me for serving you when it was convenient, complaining when it was inconvenient, and giving you the scraps of my efforts, attention, or service. You deserve the best I have to offer of myself, every single day

including my time, talents, and treasure. Help me when I am weak. Thank you for being patient with me. I love you. In Jesus’ name, I pray - Amen.” Connecting to God If you have not surrendered your life to the God who created you, loves you, and has a purpose for your life, today is a good day to be introduced to the God of love, peace, and joy. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him (Jesus Christ) should not perish but have eternal life.” Ask God to forgive you of your sins, and tell him that you believe and receive Jesus to be the Lord of your life. Ask him to fill you with the Holy Spirit and lead you to a Bible-believing church. Read your Bible and pray every day. (I’ll be praying for you.) Danyale Patterson would love to connect with you!
