ohor Bahru MP and BCSG patron Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad recently officiated the Breast Cancer Support Group of Johor Bahru (BCSG-JB) Road show for breast cancer awareness at Plaza Pelangi.

Also present was City Councillor Datuk Yahya bin Jaafar and Mr. Ishraqi Shah from PNB Commercial who sponsored the venue as their CSR bid to the awareness drive.

A BCSG-JB spokesperson said, “We organise breast cancer awareness road shows regularly with the main objective of raising awareness on the

importance of early detection of the disease”.

Statistics indicate that there is a marked increase of breast cancer cases in the country where one in fifteen women have been infected with cancer as compared to one in twenty some years ago. >>Continued on page 6

launches probably the 1st and only Car Park & Wash for LUPUS Charity Drive in conjunction of World Lupus Day on May 10, 2013

W

orld Lupus Day was first observed in 2004, and a number of special events were held to highlight its importance. This year, lupus organisations hope even more governments will sign and endorse the Proclamation.

For the first time since the event’s first inception in 2004, Columbia Asia Hospital – Nusajaya launched its own ‘1st Car Park & Wash for LUPUS Charity Drive’ at its car park from May 6th to May 10th. This was another continuing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) effort of the hospital.

A total of 500 cars from their patients as well as the public took part in this charity drive. The participants, who contributed/ donated between RM10 to RM15, got to enjoy a car wash at the premises car park. The role of Columbia Asia Hospital -Nusajaya is to garner participation within the Iskandar Malaysia region and to help raise funds through better awareness for the association.

Participants comprising of patients as well as members of public took part in the charity drive by contributing RM10 to RM15 to get their car washed. that strikes mostly young women of childbearing age. The campaign’s primary objectives were to: • Focus on the need for heightened public awareness.

• Improved patient healthcare services.

• Increased research into the cause of and a cure for lupus.

• Enhanced physician diagnosis and treatment of lupus.

• Better epidemiological data on lupus globally.

So far the impact has been positive and we hope there will be more programmes or workshops pertaining to Iskandar Malaysia.

How do you think is the best way to get youths involved in culture and heritage programmes?

Most of the youths like to be involved in outdoor and indoor activities and I guess leaflets should be given to schools or colleges to enable us to be aware of a programme and encourage participation.

How can agencies work with youths to help them appreciate and participate in heritage and culture preservation?

Agencies should work with educational institutes to increase the involvement of youths in such types of programmes and I feel that through this involvement, we would automatically appreciate what we have.

What are some suggestions you have to make JB city centre livelier?

Have more heritage buildings and perhaps a small fee could be charged to maintain the place.

If your friends are visiting JB, where would you bring them?

I would love to take them to LEGOLAND Malaysia and other sightseeing locations around the Iskandar Malaysia region.

I think there could be more popular places to boost tourism and for locals to go to.

Do you think there are enough avenues for youths to express themselves in Iskandar Malaysia?

I don’t think there is enough and I hope this perspective would change in the near future.

As a youth, what do you look forward to with regards to JB Transformation programme?

As said earlier, I hope there would be more popular places for us to go to. However, I would like to add that it would be nice if the transportation system improves and there should be more greenery in core city areas.

Capricious Kepri...

The Tourism office of Kepulauan Riau Province of the Republic of Indonesia with their primary organizer PT. Anugerah Indonesia Tour & Travel held a showcase at New York Hotel Johor Bahru to proliferate more tourists from this region to visit Kepulauan Riau.

The one day event was also held in Singapore. The primary objective was to increase the awareness of foreign tourism business operators and travel agents to the new brand of Wonderful Kepri (Kepri is the abbreviation for Riau Archipelago Province of Indonesia) as a new emerging international tourist destination.

“We are here to promote the beauty of Kepri and with the modest turnout, we will be looking into making this excursion an annual event,” said Mr. Petrus M. Sitohang, Chairman of PT. Anugerah Tour & Travel.

The event was hosted by Indonesian pop star singer and actress Dewi Sandra.

Riau Islands Province is the fastest growing province of Indonesia by population, consisting of the principal group of the Riau Archipelago, together with other island groups to the south, east and northeast.

The island of Batam, which lies within the central core group of islands, contains a majority of the province’s population. Other highly populated islands within the Riau Archipelago include Bintan and Karimun while boasting other islands such as Anambas islands, Tambelan islands, Badas islands, Lingga islands, Natuna islands and Tanjung Pinang to name a few.

“The road show organised by the Kepri Tourism board is very encouraging and it is an eye- opener of opportunities to tour operators as they can look at the Riau Archipelago as a new destination to sell to their customers,” said Malaysian Tourist Guides’ Council President Mr. Jimmy Leong.

Community: Thistle Johor Bahru and Columbia Asia Hospital join hands to celebrate mother’s day

I

t was a day to honour mothers with the gift of wellness as Thistle Hotel Johor Bahru invited more than one hundred and fifty mothers to participate in a wellness event in conjunction with Mother’s Day celebration on Saturday, 11th May. Jointly organised by the hotel and Columbia Asia Hospital, the event was attended by mothers from various organizations, corporate and government sectors and also members from the Breast Cancer Support Group Johor Bahru.

Thistle Johor Bahru was the first hotel in Johor to organise such a meaningful and beneficial event for mothers as it saw the importance of motherhood, maternal bonding and influence of mothers in modern day society.

The programme started off with simple screening tests. Mothers had the opportunity to test their Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index, Glucose and Cholesterol.

Breast Self-Examination was also conducted by the Breast Cancer Support Group Johor Bahru.

Mothers had fun as they sat down to try Dermalogica’s new concept skin bar

and learnt about nutrition from Abbott Laboratories Malaysia.

The first speaker was Dr. Rohana Ahmad, Consultant General Breast and Endocrine Surgeon of Columbia Asia Hospital, gave a vibrant talk on ‘Early Detection, Saving Lives.’

It was then followed by a delicious surprise when a beautifully decorated Mother’s Day cake baked by the hotel’s pastry chef Jefri Omar was rolled in for the mothers to enjoy. Joining them on this joyous cakecutting ceremony was Edward Kollmer, General Manager of Thistle Johor Bahru and Rahani Yaacob, General Manager of Columbia Asia Hospital.

Edward Kollmer and Rahani Yaacob presented the pink ribbon to Doris Boo, President of the Breast Cancer Support Group Johor Bahru. Proceeds collected from the donation box on this day were contributed to the Breast Cancer Support Group Johor Bahru.

Mothers were overjoyed with the appearance of the hotel’s chef Kamal Damiri who gave an energizing demonstration on how to make Salmon Salad with Orange

Vinaigrette. The air in the function room was filled with exciting vibes as each mother received a chef ’s hat from the hotel signed by the Executive Chef, Imran Hamid.

Mothers gathered around to watch Chef Jefri Omar demonstrate his homemade yogurt with fruits.

Columbia Asia Hospital Dr. Rajesh Mahendran, Consultant Obstetrics & Gynecology presented an interesting talk on ‘Break Free’ and Dr. Rohaini Jonit inspired the mothers with her topic ‘Women’s Worth.’

The event was further enhanced by a mouth-watering spread of local delights for tea-break prepared by the Thistle Chefs.

Mothers visited various stalls to enjoy the chicken rice, kacang pol, fritters and an assortment of desserts.

Wellness celebration ended with a sweet ‘thank you’ as each mother received a signature Thistle cupcake.

The wellness celebration was all about educating mothers on self-care practices, increase awareness of available health services and resources in the country and also to have positive health behaviour changes in their daily lives.

Thistle Johor Bahru plans to organize more health talks and seminars as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts to help the community in which the hotel staff live and work.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccinations which protects against cervical cancer were also available at the event. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted disease, and can pass on from one individual to another through direct skin-toskin contact during sexual activity, between hands

and genitalia, blood and sometimes from mother to child during birth. The virus infects the genital areas of both males and females and can also affect the mouth and throat. HPV vaccination is recommended to girls aged 12 onwards, up till they’re 26 years of age.

Known as the “City of Knowledge”, the township offers 4 universities, a junior college, an art school, an international school, a Japanese school and 18 primary, secondary and religious schools. All the primary and secondary schools have been in operation for a number of years and the higher education institutions that have commenced operation include Universiti Kuala Lumpur, Masterskill University College of Health Sciences and MARA Junior Science College.

The others under construction include Universiti Teknologi MARA campus, HELP University College, Malaysia Art School and Excelsior International School, all of which are expected to be fully operational by 2013. By then, the student and faculty personnel population is projected to reach up to 50,000 and the total township population will be 150,000. This population will drive demand for housing and commercial development in the township and create employment opportunities for the residents of Iskandar Malaysia.

The other integrated township in Iskandar Malaysia is Seri Austin, a suburban residential hot spot for those who desire comfort of space and green lungs within the Tebrau area in Zone D of Iskandar Malaysia. In February 2012, UMLand launched two blocks of luxurious and exclusive boutique serviced residences known as Somerset Puteri Harbour at the waterfront of the Puteri Harbour marina in Zone B, Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia. These waterfront apartments will be managed by the Ascott Group, a renowned world-class serviced residences operator. In the pipeline are two commercial developments in Zone A and Zone B of Iskandar Malaysia: Suasana, a retail/commercial and serviced apartments in Johor Bahru CBD and another commercial/office tower development in Puteri Harbour, Nusajaya.

In addition to the above projects within Iskandar Malaysia, the Group has also in recent years increased its land bank in the region, namely a piece of 629-acre land in Pulai Jaya within Zone E, a piece of 8.89-acre land within Seri Alam, Zone D and a piece of 332.68-acre land in Plentong, Zone D. All 3 pieces of land planned for future development will ensure the Group’s sustainability in the industry and provide

future growth for the Group. The Group’s strong presence in Iskandar Malaysia will certainly be a major contributing factor towards the rapid development and success of the Iskandar Malaysia development. n eclectic mix of poets, architects, spa owners, green entrepreneurs and regular folk making a potluck of influencers came together for a Garden Party hosted by Chris Parry, founder of Johor Green.

“The goal of the party is to raise awareness and make gardening an aspirational lifestyle,” said Chris. The focal point of the party was the garden tour where guests were given a brief educational tour by Chris. Among the plants which raised curiosity was the Indian Boarage PLectranthus Amboinicus (a good cooking herb and used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for sore throats), the Kaffir lime leaves and Citronella leaves which can be used as natural pest repellants.

Sail Malaysia Passage

to the East

Tourism: Sail Malaysia Passage to the East Yacht Rally 2013 was officially kicked off from Danga Bay with eight yachts carrying 20 people.

ith participants from the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa, the expedition will cover an estimated 2,000 nautical miles with 14 stops along the way.

“Not many people sail to Borneo.

We want to promote East Malaysia, which has the richest biodiversity in the world,” said Sazli Kamal Basha, the Managing Director S.M. Discovery Sdn Bhd. The rally will see the participants heading towards Pulau Sibu in Johor; Teluk Tekek of Pulau Tioman in Pahang; Sungai Chukai, Pulau Kapas and Kuala Terengganu in Terengganu; Santubong and Miri in Sarawak; and Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Sandakan and Tawau in Sabah.

“Many of the participants stay on for one to three years after the event.

They use Malaysia as a hub for travel,” said Sazli Kamal. Along the way, the sailors will participate in local cultural activities. They will stay in each stop from a few days to a few weeks.

One of the participants said that among the problems faced during the

expedition were the unreliable wind patterns and access to petrol to fuel up the boats.

The tentative calendar indicates that the rally is set reach Derawan, Indonesia, on the 2nd of September.

“Our role in Sail Malaysia is to introduce and welcome you to the many exotic destinations in our country, coordinate the events and festivities for your enjoyment with a touch of our own Malaysian hospitality,” said Sazli Kamal.

The passage to the East begins during the Southwest Monsoon. The prevailing wind flow is generally southwesterly and light below 15 knots. The best time for passage to the East is from mid May to early September while from November to March, the Northeast Monsoon brings steady easterly of northeasterly winds. The Passage to Langkawi rally is organised during this season to assist yachts in settling down in Malaysia along the Straits of Melaka.

Sazli Kamal added that, “traditional navigation route for yachts was to sail down the Malacca Straits before heading west towards the Andaman Sea.”

or most of us, May Day morning equates to an extra day of slugging on bed. However, residents of Taman Molek Zone 3 beg to differ and organised a walkathon for themselves within their compound instead.

Enthusiastic residents congregated at their basketball court and readied themselves for the walkathon from as early as 8am. Everybody chipped in their effort to get everything in place before warming up en masse. After their muscles were all geared up and ready to go, the 3km walkathon was flagged off by invited

Tell us who Tony is!

When I look at my collection of books, I have unknowingly amassed about thousand books over the years on food and cooking, photography and travel, and etc... Looking at what I read for leisure, I can say that food, travel and photography are in my DNA. It may sound weird to others but I think I am born to be a food blogger!

What made you start Johor Kaki food blog?

Over 30 years, I have been eating and enjoying food in Johor but most of us do not know where the best eats are. When I searched online, information is scanty and scattered. This prompted me to start looking for the best food here and blogging about it. I also decided to record as many of the retiring good hawkers’ stories before they fade away. Hence Johor Kaki’s mission is to “Put Every Good Johor Hawker on the World Wide Web” with a sense of purpose and urgency!

What types of food do you review and blog about?

I blog about any good food, be it traditional street hawkers to the newest, swankiest restaurants, and as long as they are in Johor. The older traditional hawkers are retiring and on the other hand, young entrepreneurs are starting new restaurants. I like to blog about both, the fading and the emerging. I also observed that the Johor food scene is becoming more international and are thriving and I love blogging about this trend.

You had recently won the Best Malaysia International Fabulous Food 1Malaysia Bloggers Award 2013. Tell us how you felt upon winning.

Of course, I am very happy because this award can help raise the profile of Johor’s cuisine. In my humble opinion, Johor food deserves to be recognised the same way as the other states. First and foremost, I have to thank

the Johor hawkers, because without them, there would be no content, no Johor Kaki blog. During the voting, I am touched by the overwhelming support from literally thousands of friends and well wishers - that includes The Iskandarian, thank you!

Do you travel to Johor on a daily basis to try out the different cuisines?

Yes! I have to eat every day, just like everyone (laughs).

So I plan and do my best to try the different eateries daily and when I come across something that I enjoy and believe others will too, I share it in my blog.

With many food bloggers around, what sets you apart from the rest?

I often invite other bloggers to be my guest blogger on Johor Kaki blog as I believe readers will appreciate the diversity. We are all bonded by a common love for food. Besides being a food blogger, I also see myself as a community builder using social media to bring together lovers of Johor food. For example, our Johor Sedap Facebook group has over 6000 active members. This is the largest Halal food group that I am aware of and our members are constantly engaged in lively discussions about their favourite Halal food in Johor.

How do you manage to stay fit despite all the eating?!

Actually, it might surprise you to hear that food blogging is a very physical activity. It involves a lot of walking under the sun, and darting from cover to cover when it rains. My favourite method of food hunting is to park my car and walk the five foot ways in search of undiscovered good food. It helps burn a lot of calories! Besides, I brisk walk for about 45 minutes almost every day. When I am at home, I try my best to eat simple meals and sometimes I just have oats or cereal for lunch or dinner as I got to conserve the calories and cholesterol for the next food tasting!

Recipe “Ayam Masak Lemak Cili Api” – (Chicken in Spicy Creamy Sauce)

Recipe: Ingredients: 500 g chicken thighs - cut into pieces 1 fresh turmeric leaf (optional) 500 - 600 ml skimmed milk / low fat milk / coconut milk 2-3 dried tamarind slices Salt to taste Spice Blend: 2 sticks of lemongrass, white part only 2-3 cm ginger 4-5 shallots 2-3 garlic cloves 1 cm fresh turmeric or 2 tsp turmeric powder Handful of bird’s eye chilies, add more or less if you wish Blend the entire spice mix until it’s a fine paste.

The WANTED Announces their FIRST SINGLE OF 2013; ‘Walks Like Rihanna’

O

ne of the biggest pop acts in the world, The Wanted, has announced details of their first single of 2013 - ‘Walks Like Rihanna’ is to be released in the UK on June 23rd. The new track was co-written and produced by the legendary Dr Luke who has previously worked with the likes of Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Pink and Britney Spears.

‘Walks Like Rihanna’ is a pure pop summer anthem, on the song Tom Parker said, “We are really excited about this single. We feel it’s a little different from the usual Wanted sound, we’ve stripped it back to pure pop, and it’s just a feel good, fun track. Fun is a good word to describe the video too. Let’s just say it’s got a lot of character.”

The video for ‘Walks Like Rihanna’ takes a tongue in cheek look at what being in a boy band is all about, in the undeniable style of The Wanted. It was shot in LA and was released on 8th May.

The single includes vocals from Nathan Sykes who underwent specialist surgery to correct a hemorrhaging vocal cord in Los Angeles in mid April. The surgery went as planned however, it is still uncertain when Nathan will be re-joining the band.

2013 has been an exceptionally busy year already for The Wanted. It began with them scooping The People’s Choice Award for Favorite Breakout Artist, beating off competition from Fun, Gotye, Carly Rae Jepson and One Direction.

The band has been filming a TV show in the US for E! titled, ‘The Wanted Life’, the show will air in the US on June 2nd with UK and international transmission dates to be confirmed shortly. They have also been in the studio working on their forthcoming album which will be released globally later this year.

The Wanted will also be performing shows and completing major promotion across the globe this year.

he stable economy has spurned prominent change to our cityscape with tall office towers, residential buildings and mega shopping centres springing up all over Johor Bahru.

On a macro scale, designs of some buildings, whether crafted by local or international designers push contemporary limits to international standings. In regards to individual homes, some stunning architectures can also be observed but often limited to new developments.

However, in reality many older dwellings still dominate our urbanscape with a lack of consistency and integration therefore as soon as you have driven out of city centre you quickly notice the stark contrast.

In order to synchronise all environments, a micro scale approach has to be adopted beginning with individual real estate, be it your home or your shoplot. Sadly, not everyone is concerned with exterior outlook and their perception on design is very much limited to what they have been exposed to.

People are often reluctant to move beyond their comfort zone and make changes.

Ethics of Invoicing, it shouldn’t be that hard

t has been established by Treitel that a contract is an agreement giving rise to obligations which are enforced or recognised by the law. Having made an agreement, the parties are encouraged to honour their obligations. In layman’s terms, if you go to a shop to purchase something you like, you pay for it and in return you get a receipt and the deal is sealed. Both parties are satisfied as each side had honoured their obligations.

However, in reality, small medium enterprises (SMEs) faces lot of challenges – financially when clients do not honour their obligations of agreement.

Healthy cash flow is the life blood of any business.

Cash flow has been named as one of the single most important factors in avoiding business failure. The results from recent research by BACS (founded in 1968) have highlighted that small to medium business in particular are struggling to get payments both from their clients and customers, and suppliers and B2B partners.

Research has shown that small companies in the UK are now finding they have to wait an average of 38

days before they are paid!

Larger companies are the main culprits and causing the greatest problems to SME’s as it was found that rather than adhering to set contracts and agreed payment terms, they tend to have a lackadaisical attitude and choose when they want to pay up. Sounds familiar?

It states that, on average one in ten small businesses are waiting for some £50,000 in payments (and almost half confessed that this amount, would be enough to put them out of business)! The situation is no better in Malaysia where SMEs are facing similar problem of late payments from clients, especially from the bigger corporations.

Solutions Put it in writing. Make it clear what has been agreed and document the terms.

SMEs usually do not look forward in souring business relationships over late payments as it would not be advantageous to them for future dealings. If you know your client well, go

The 3 day Career, Entrepreneurship and Skills Carnival (Kepak),was organised in collaboration with the Johor Economic Planning Unit, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Department of Skills Development (JPK), Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and Jobs Malaysia Centre.

Over 60 high profile corporations participated in the event.

Besides focusing on job vacancy opportunities, the event also promoted skill development as an alternative income.

“Kepak is about giving exposure to both employers and future employees.

This is the effort of the state government in ensuring a higher standard of living is achieved by all Johoreans,” said Johor Economic Planning Unit’s (UPEN) Director Elias Hasran.

ACCUMULATING WEALTH? ¬ When to sell your stocks?

inally, the Malaysian share market has started to perform the way it wanted - going up without much restriction.

This is especially true when one of the major uncertainties (General Election) is gone. While the average trading volume became much higher with more than two billion shares per day, many counters’ share prices have soared tremendously too.

A friend asks, “While everyone is afraid of missing the boat and keep buying shares now, when would be a good time to sell our shares?” Clearly, selling shares is no simpler than buying shares. Consider the followings before selling your shares: 1) You’ve reached your Profit Target As discussed earlier, before one buys a counter, it’s important to have an exit plan. Say, if you want to make 30% through an investment and if you’ve met your profit target, sell it! Things become simpler if you have a profit target in mind.

2) You want to protect from losses This is similar to the above except the share price goes the opposite way.

Therefore, you have to act to protect your losses. For example, if you bought into Company B at RM1, and after a few days it’s share price drops to RM0.91, which is about 10% loss, this prompts you to consider selling your shares. While every one’s risk appetite is different, as a rule of thumb, you wouldn’t want to lose more than 8-10% of your investment.

3) The reason you bought the counter has changed Do you have reason(s) when buying a counter or business? I’m sure you do.

Whatever the reason, be the company you bought is a monopoly business, high profit margin, good earning visibility or has a good management, and once those reasons are no longer valid, it’s time to consider selling the business. For instance, the company you own used to be the only

one in the market (monopoly), but due to other opponents that have emerged lately, the company no longer posses its unique competitiveness.

4) The market price has reached its fair value / overprice There are a few ways investors measure the value of a business, such as Price to Earning (PE) ratio, Book Value, Intrinsic value and so on.

Regardless of the methodology you

used, if the share price has reached its deemed fair value, it’s time to consider selling the share.

Conclusion In a nutshell, making decision to sell a stock is a combination of art & science. While there may be other market reasons to sell other than the above, always consider the consequences before selling. Remember, once a “sell call” is triggered, it’s irreversible!

Prosper Thy Neighbours (part2)

n the current drive towards total productivity factor and strategic dependence on foreign labour, Singapore-based businesses are able to leverage Iskandar Malaysia as their immediate economic extension.

I have been fortunate to meet the business leaders involved and I can say that their plans are truly world-class.

For our younger student investors in their early twenties and thirties, we advocate their participation in social investments. Not only should they master the technicalities of investing in a cross border region, they must also take an active role in cultural and social engagement as borders are getting very transparent.

Tuck in @ Chang Man for some delicious favourites!

I

came here at the invitation of the owner Adrian Ooi as they opened for business recently. There was already a steady stream of customers at the restaurant on a Monday morning. I guess this is partly because Chang Man serves Dim sum, chicken rice, char siew rice and Hor fun which are familiar staples that are usually in demand, and more importantly, the food here is good.

We tasted some of the Dim sum, chicken/ char siew rice and Hor fun and it was obvious that a lot of effort had been put in, to create good food for customers. Their seafood soup dumpling is also a lovely treat here as it was delicious and there was a small piece of shark’s fin in it.

Coming to their Dim sums, their crab roe siew mai is simply superb. Made with chopped pork and fresh shrimps topped with crab roe, it has an excellent mouth feel and flavour. This is a Must Try! Chang Man’s shrimp dumpling soup Hor fun is also another must try as the soup is made with bone stock and was tasty and has an umami flavour! That dash of secret yellowish sauce on top was savoury and seemed to be made with salted egg. Overall, their shrimp

dumplings are made well, fresh, succulent yet bouncy and crunchy with nice “prawnysweet” flavour.

I also loved trying their fried carrot cake. It is made with lots of radish, so it is tastier and softer than the ordinary version made mostly with flour. The restaurant also serves chicken rice set at RM6.00. The steamed chicken is made with ordinary farm chicken, yet it has a tender texture and flavour of a good kampung chicken. The rice that came with the chicken and char siew was very lightly coated with fragrant chicken oil.

The grains were separate and (very) slightly nutty. The accompanying fresh chilli was mildly spicy and tangy. As for their char siew, they were a really good blend of caramelised outer layer, juicy fat and tender lean meat.

Buz Walker-Teach: Capturing Johor Bahru’s Cultural Heritage on Ink

A

merican artist and graphic design lecturer at Raffles University Iskandar (RUI), Buz Walker-Teach is highly passionate about capturing Johor Bahru’s cultural heritage.

He actively seeks out historical sites and buildings that may be threatened by urban redevelopment, and races against time to create a visual record by capturing images of these sites on ink before they vanish.

Buz is a talented visual artist, illustrator, graphic designer and design entrepreneur.

He operated a successful commercial graphic design and art studio in California, USA, for twenty-one years before his search for new adventures led him to Asia. Buz re-located to Asia in 1995. Since then, he has been teaching and sharing his passion for art in Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

Buz is credited with establishing the Sacramento Illustrator’s Guild (California, USA), where he also served as President for three years. He is a published artist and his works have been exhibited in numerous gallery group shows in Singapore. He is wellknown among the painting, drawing and sketching groups in Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

Buz’s unique background allows him to balance being both a practicing artist as well as an art educator. With his vast experience in graphic design, art-related fields, advertising and marketing, Buz hopes to meet and exceed

the creative and learning needs of his students at RUI. The Iskandarian talked to Buz about his passion and experiences as an American artist in Asia.

What is Graphic Design?

There are many different definitions of Graphic Design. In essence, it is the practice or profession of designing print or electronic forms of visual information for use in an advertisement, publication, or on a website.

It is a way for human beings to visually communicate information and messages, through a combination of words and images/ pictures.

What are the different drawing techniques and media?

Drawing is usually thought of in terms of pencil, pen and ink media. However, sketching outside can be done through a variety of media - watercolours, markers, or pastel. In this day and age, I have even witnessed artists sketching digitally on their i-Pads. When I first started keeping sketchbooks, I mostly drew with pencils but now I prefer working with permanent ink pens, then adding watercolour pencils to create a colour wash to enhance the degree of realism and permanence.

Why draw when you can just take a picture?

When I draw an object, a person or a place, it involves an exercise in observation. I have to study it closely and thus I become acquainted with it. I may see intricate details and nuances that do not show up on photographs. I believe such scrutiny and highlighting make my sketches much more unique and interesting.

When I look back at my sketch books of the past sixteen years, I still have profound memories about the subject itself, as well as the situation, the surrounding ambience and the emotions I felt as I did the drawing. In addition to the drawing process being highly experiential, it is also very therapeutic.

As an American artist in Asia, I have been very privileged to draw at the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia, Raffles Hotel in Singapore, heritage shophouses in Penang and Johor Bahru, Mount Fuji in Japan. I have also sketched Filipinos donning traditional dress in the Philippines. These are priceless moments that I will cherish forever.

What are the subjects or themes that inspire your drawings?

I enjoy drawing buildings, landscapes and figurative subjects. A good example of some of these can be found in my favourite sketching areas located around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and Jalan Dhoby in Johor Bahru, where historical buildings still stand and traditional trades continue to flourish.

Lately, I have been attracted to old buildings and objects where the details of chipped paint, rust, mould, and broken parts create interesting patterns of “accidental design”. These “designs” provide a highly unique character to the subjects.

What are some of the challenges or interesting situations that you have encountered during your drawing sessions?

As an outdoor sketcher in Asia, one always has to deal with the heat, humidity and rain.

In addition, one is also susceptible to attacks by mosquitoes and other insects. Nevertheless, it all becomes “part of the experience”. I have also encountered many interesting people who stopped to watch, chat and even take pictures of me drawing! They are surprised to find a foreigner sketching on the streets of Asia.

Once I was caught off-guard by a sudden tropical rainstorm while sketching at an ancient and isolated temple site in Indonesia.

I quickly took cover inside the temple and it dawned on me that I was the only person there.

Time seemed to stand still as I stood in that large shadowy stone hall that had been so wellpreserved for over 400 years. It was a timeless, surreal and slightly unnerving experience that I will never forget.

Quick Reads No merger and acquisition for Lafarge

L

afarge Malayan Cement Bhd, the country’s largest cement producer, with a market share of 40%, has no plans for any merger and acquisition (M&A) at the moment, as it wants to concentrate on organic growth, said its President and CEO Bradley Mulroney.

“No (plans for M&A). We are quite happy with our market positioning, our market presence and market size,” he said.

“Clearly, you can see the impact of price volatility in our results in terms of the profitability of our business.

(But) we believe our results will remain satisfactory (moving forward)”.

In the first quarter ended March 31, 2013, Lafarge’s net profit dropped 16.2% to RM54.3 million from RM64.8 million a year earlier due to lower domestic cement prices.

Mulroney said even though the cement price war is showing signs of stabilising, “it is wrong to say that the price is totally stable.”

Mulroney hopes that cement prices will return to normal as continued volatility affects customer service levels as well.

While keeping its eye on expanding its capacity, he said, Lafarge remains positive on the domestic market on strong demand due to the ongoing infrastructure projects implemented under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

“If there is a new entrant in the market, people (cement players) are going to react in different ways. Our view is that that reaction is not very constructive to the market. When you have volatility, it makes the ordering pattern volatile as well,” he said.

RM700 million projects in Johor Bahru Gromutual deputy managing director Chew Kwee Hiok said the company plans to further tap opportunities in the rapidly growing Iskandar Malaysia region.

The Johor-based property developer has earmarked RM700 million worth of development projects for launch in the next few years in Johor Bahru.

The group has ongoing development projects in Johor and Malacca with a gross development value (GDV) of RM200 million. The group has so far completed RM600 million worth of residential and commercial properties in the two states since its incorporation in 2003.

I&P Hopes to increase revenue

roperty developer I & P Group Sdn Bhd hopes to increase revenue by 36% to RM1.5bil from RM1.1bil recorded in 2012.

With the planned launch of properties with a combined gross development value (GDV) of RM2.89bil this year, of which RM2.07bil will be slated for the second half in anticipation of robust demand.

“We will be offering a variety of properties to the market, both residential and commercial, in different sizes to cater to different market segments,” said I&P Group Managing Director Datuk Jamaludin Osman.

I&P Group has a land bank of almost 2023.43 ha concentrated in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru with a potential GDV of RM25bil. This land bank is expected to keep the company busy over a span of 15 to 20 years. It has a portfolio of

13 townships spread across the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru.

In Johor, they launched only one project in Taman Rinting with a GDV of RM33.36mil during the first half of the year comprising twostorey shop-offices with built-up areas ranging from 5,157 sq ft to 8,615 sq ft. These will be priced from RM1mil to RM2.1mil. The rest of its launches in Johor are expected to be in the second half.

The group is proposing to have urban commercial centres in townships like Bandar Kinrara, Bandar Baru Seri Petaling, Alam Damai, Temasya Glemarie and Alam Sutera in the Klang Valley and Taman Pelangi in Johor Bahru.

“Going forward we are looking at different ways of planning for our townships. We need to plan with the future (in mind) because land is becoming scarce,” Jamaludin said.

Boustead to spread their wings

oustead Properties Bhd, the property arm of Boustead Holdings Bhd, is looking at expanding its land bank within Klang Valley and Johor, either through acquisition or conversion of oil palm land.

“In Johor, the group is contemplating adding to its land bank particularly in Kulai and Telok Sengat, in the district of Kota Tinggi, by converting oil palm land,” said Datuk Ghazali Mohd Ali, Director of Property Division.

“While this will not be in the immediate future, several possibilities for the Kulai land are for a mixed-development project that would include housing and a college.”

Several property launches will take place in Taman Mutiara Rini this year. “We launch, on average, 600 to 700 units a year.

Sales has been good, prices are not breaching RM500.000 which is good. We are about to launch

1,800 units of affordable housing in Johor,” he said.

Launches for the year include 748 units of semidetached affordable homes with 1,200 sq ft built-up (30 ft x 50 ft) that will be priced at RM220,000 each. According to him, the land is allocated for terrace houses, but the houses will be amalgamated and sold as semidetached.

Another 307 units of low to midcost double-storey terrace houses with built-up of 850 sq ft (15ft x 50 ft) will be sold for RM80,000. The township will also include two popular hypermarket stores.

“The good news is Tesco has obtained approvals and so has Mydin to open within the township,” he added. The township also has an Urban Forest & Recreational Centre and an international-standard cricket pitch called the Mutiara Rini Oval.
