T
he Holiday is Over: I know what you’re thinking; the water is still warm, the barbeques are still smouldering, the last thing you need is 5mm of neoprene and a rubber balaclava, but you’re wrong – the holiday is over. We may be reaping the rewards of those long warm days of summer, which heated the sea an extra degree or so. And though the air temperature may be starting to drop and the nights drawing in quickly, a summer suit is still more than adequate for warming our cockles through a two hour session. But all of that is about to change. You have been warned. It is an unarguable truth, known by fish wives
across our land, that a blazingly glorious British summer must be punished by one of the harshest, coldest winters. It will happen soon, out of the blue, we will have a few surprise days of plummeting temperatures and maybe even a light frost. You won’t think much of it, because chances are there won’t be waves on those days. But then the next time there is, and you paddle out in your 3mm, the inside of your head will start to feel like it is swelling and about to shut down on that fourth duck-dive. You will shiver as you wait for waves. Your hands will go a fashionable shade of purple. You will take extreme measures. You will wee in your wetsuit. And the next day you will make a promise to
yourself to buy a new winter wetsuit – one of those new ones that promises to be as flexible as your summer suit, but with more warmth than any 5mm you’ve ever owned. You will head down to your local surf shop, still wearing your boardies, sunnies and flip flops despite the fact that it is October and everyone thinks you’re mental. And stood there, dripping wet and cold from the autumnal showers, you will pull out your credit card and tell the shop assistant you want the best winter wetsuit money can buy... in a medium... only to be told that they sold out weeks ago. You will feel stupid. You’re not stupid. Plan ahead. The holiday is over – it’s time to go back to work.
