We’re on a journey to discover better ways of approaching children’s health. It begins with our culture of inclusion, where diversity of thought reflects the world we live in and supports our ability to positively impact communities. A new age of health has dawned—one without limits, beyond the expected, which we believe will lead to the healthiest generations of children.

Family Matters

Families — just like gender, sex and identity — fall on a spectrum. There is no this or that when it comes to the types of families we see. Families come in all shapes, sizes and colors. Some family households have two parents and are full of siblings, and some might be just a mom and her baby. Others might be homes filled with grandparents, aunts and uncles, while others might be a couple with several fur babies. No one family makeup is better than another, all families are valid and perfect as long as those families are filled with love and acceptance.

That is why Watermark started this annual guide four years ago, to highlight and showcase all the different types of families that make up the beautiful, blended society we live in. So we thank you for picking up our fourth installment of the Rainbow Family Guide.

In these pages, you will find stories from and information for all kinds of families — born into, chosen and otherwise. You will also find some fun activities and vital resources that you will be able to use all year long, so be sure to hang onto this handy, dandy guide.

First, we look at a traditional summer camp experience with an inclusive twist as we chat with folks from CampOUT, a nonprofit LGBTQ+-focused summer camp that brings typical camp experiences like canoeing, archery, camp games, swimming, sports, arts & crafts, bonfires and more to the kids.

Next, we spotlight a summer camp for your fashion forward kids, grades K-8, as we check in with Form 2 Fashion co-founder Jaison Radcliff. Along with its summer camps, F2F also offers an arts education program for kids in any grade who are looking to turn their passions into a thriving career in the fashion industry.

You will also find a couple of pages filled with activities in this guide where you can play a few games and learn a few fun facts about some LGBTQ+ celebrities, queer identities and more.

Then, we speak with members from PFLAG chapters throughout Central Florida and Tampa Bay about the organization’s history and what benefits they have to offer.

Finally, we have included a variety of other local, statewide and nationwide resources to help you with all your LGBTQ+ youth, family and individual needs whether you are a parent in the community or have a queer youth in your care.

We hope you enjoy our latest Rainbow Family Guide.

Authentic Adventures

CampOUT offers inclusive fun in the sun

CampOUT welcomed over 120 LGBTQ+ and ally youth for their inaugural event in 2022, delivering on the nonprofit’s promise to be “more than your average summer camp.”

Scheduled as a week-long experience for youth 10-17, it offered everything one might expect — arts and crafts, archery, canoeing, games, swimming and more — but with an inclusive twist. It was designed to help campers “do the most courageous thing possible by being and loving their authentic self.”

“Utilizing workshops, adventures, experiences, peer connections and positive role models we can create an environment our youth can thrive,” CampOUT explains. “Where they can take the knowledge learned from camp to build their confidence and have the bravery to express themselves and be true to their brightest colors.”

CampOUT Founder Rachel Sobiech, a licensed clinical social worker who serves as main director, says creating a safe space for youth was important to her. It was conceptualized with her partner Grizzly Mann, who utilized their experience working at an LGBTQ+ summer camp elsewhere in the U.S. “We got together and created the camp,” she recalls. “It has typical summer camp aspects and then more, so we have workshops that are affirming and provide resources; stuff youth don’t get at regular summer camps.”

“CampOUT was a wild dream we would have on the couch in late night convos, but with dreams come a lot of hard work and passion to get it going,” Mann adds. They’re particularly proud of having created and cultivated the camp here in Florida.

Sobiech says her major takeaway from CampOUT’s first year was how fun the experience was — and also, of course, how meaningful.

“It was really powerful watching the campers be their authentic selves and seeing them have a support system that some didn't even know was out there,” she says. “Some didn’t even know that there were other kids just like them. It felt amazing.”

In addition to Sobiech and Mann, LGBTQ+ youth are guided by staff members. Camp Counselor and Lifeguard Lindsey Spero was among the first to participate.

“CampOUT provides an experience for youth unlike any other that is pivotal to their healthy development as queer people,” they explain. “As a transgender young adult and staff member,

I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of a queer community-focused experience and how many lives were changed because of our visibility.

“Trauma-informed care and queer adults who were able to demonstrate the health and happiness of life gave our campers the knowledge that they too could be successful, thriving queer people,” Spero continues. “Campers were also given tools, resources and supplies that they didn’t previously have to further assist their growth as queer youth … we’re noticing a direct benefit in the health of our campers and staff.”

CampOUT is scheduled to return for its second summer camp July 16-23 in Ocala. The max capacity will be 120 youth and 54 staffers, or roughly one guardian for every three participants.

“It feels great to be in our second year, but it's also very overwhelming because of the political environment,” Sobiech says. Florida has passed a growing number of antiLGBTQ+ laws and policies in recent years.

“Safety is our number one concern right now,” she says. “For our kids and our staff. But to be able to provide this opportunity in a heated political environment is powerful

on its own. We’re able to give space to kids who aren't feeling the love and acceptance that they should be receiving in the state of Florida. I'm thankful that we have the opportunity to give this to them.”

Each attendee’s $1,000 fee — some of which are paid by scholarships the camp offers funded by local fundraisers — is all encompassing. It covers their board, meals, supplies and other required items. If enough funds are raised, the all-volunteer staff members may also be compensated.

“It’s really cool to see people come in knowing that they potentially won’t get paid,” Sobiech says. “Everyone wants to do it out of the goodness of their heart versus a paycheck.”

To protect participants, the location of the camp will exclusively be given to registered guardians and staff members, and only as the event nears. All counselors are required to attend training as well as pass background and fingerprint checks within 60 days, and medical staff must be certified in medication administration and Basic Life Support.

CampOUT also maintains a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination, all participant bags are checked and each cabin is chaperoned by a staff member. They’re arranged by age group rather a camper’s assigned sex at birth.

“That way everyone feels affirmed in their gender and however they identify,” Sobiech explains. The campground’s 10 cabins are arranged into six age brackets utilizing the colors of the traditional Pride flag: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.

“Our youngest group is red, the 10-11 year olds, and then our oldest is 16-17 year olds who are purple,” Sobiech notes. “Ideally if they come back each year, they’ll be the next color of the rainbow.”

Looking toward the future is exactly what CampOUT’s organizers are doing. They’ll once again welcome youth from throughout the state and outside of it, something they hope to continue growing with multi-week camps and multiple sessions throughout the summer.

“I would also like to be able to securely pay our staff members because they're doing so much for those kids,” Sobiech says of the organizaion's goals. “It's very important to me. I’d also like us to have our own facility.”

In the interim, CampOUT will continue to welcome LGBTQ+ and ally youth to Florida the only way they know how — with open arms.

Fashion Forward

Form 2 Fashion offers youth a look into the world of fashion

Jaison Radcliff has been into fashion for as long as he can remember, saying “I had a fashionable grandmother who would really put it on. She looked stunning all the time; everything was an occasion. She would always say you don’t need a special occasion to dress well.”

Radcliff, who is a fashion illustrator, author and educator, met his partner Andrew Browne during a Faces Modeling Troupe fashion show and they discovered they both had a passion for bringing an education in fashion to the youth — and so was born Form 2 Fashion.

F2F is an art education program designed to take kids interested in the fashion industry and give them the skills and abilities to turn it into a thriving career. Radcliff says the primary reason for starting F2F was about creating access.

“I think the fashion industry is one of the hardest industries to break into and to be successful in because it is so over saturated,” he says. “There are a lot of designers losing that foundation so Form 2 Fashion is creating access early.”

How early? Well, programs offered through F2F start in kindergarten and go up through senior year in high school. F2F also offers a summer camp.

F2F Summer Camp is a one-week program open to new students as well as students enrolled in other F2F courses in grades K-8 and will focus on the creative and entrepreneurial process towards fashion design. The summer program will introduce students to basic design and sewing skills, and enhance their current skills set to learn new techniques in design and construction. Each summer camp is designed around a theme, and this year’s theme is about commerce and marketplace in the industry. So once the students create their design, the parents will come in with fictious money and credit cards and “purchase” the student’s work.

“They’ll still be designing but a portion of the summer camp will be learning how to take what they design to market,” Radcliff says. “I don’t believe in being a ‘starving

artist.’ We all need to eat and in order to do that we need to learn how to implement strategies, policies and procedures to be successful, and that’s what Form 2 Fashion aims to do.”

The summer camps run for one week at Lake Mary Preparatory School June 5-9 and again June 12-16 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The cost of the camp is $350 a week and includes all supplies and workbooks.

F2F’s other course offerings take place during the standard school year and include Fashion Design, both beginners and intermediate, Fashion Illustration and more.

“The main courses are all about fundamentals, techniques and creating a foundation that students can build on,” Radcliff says.

The beginners Fashion Design course introduces students to fashion as a business while giving them an education on things like fabric choices, natural fibers and what fabrics are used for a specific project. Then it builds on that in intermediate, looking at how to take their design to commerce, what is wholesale compared to retail, pricing structure, the lifecycle of a T-shirt, etc.

The Illustration Session is one of Radcliff’s favorites, being a fashion illustrator himself, but also one that he thinks is the most important.

“Everything now is digital and AI, but anatomy and things being anatomically correct are still important,” he says. “I think fashion illustration is such a huge

part of fashion design, especially when you are learning it from start to finish.”

Another important service offered by F2F is a free portfolio review for design students in the 11th and 12th grade. The session shows the students how to build and submit a portfolio for college submissions.

F2F is taking a holistic approach to a career in fashion.

“It is full actualization,” Radcliff says, “which goes back to the name — Form 2 Fashion. It is teaching you how to actually form a fashion business from concept to design to construction and then to commerce.”

Standing Together

Families always have a home at PFLAG Deborah

PFLAG was born 50 years ago from a mother's love of her LGBTQ+ son. Marching alongside him, she carried a sign in a Pride parade that read “Parents of Gays: Unite in Support for Our Children.”

After she was approached by other participants who said they wished their parents supported them like she supported her son, Jeanne Manford and her family created PFLAG, originally Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. It has grown into the largest LGBTQ+-affirming organization of its kind in the U.S.

Today it works to educate, support and advocate for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them. It has more than 325,000 supporters and hundreds of chapters, many in Florida. That includes PFLAG Riverview, Safety Harbor and Greater Orlando.

Faith Moeller started the Riverview chapter in 2020. She was on an Evangelical church staff when her child came out to her. She stepped down and began to read books about holding on to your faith and loving your child.

Moeller and her then-14-year-old child discovered PFLAG Tampa in the process, which has served the region for more than a decade. After a year of other Christian community members asking her for advice when their children came out, she started a book club, then the PFLAG chapter, as Riverview had no LGBTQ+-affirming churches.

“It's been wonderful to have this group because we have LGBTQ+ folks of all ages and different ends of the spectrum,” Moeller explains. “Grandparents, parents, allies and partners from other LGBTQ+ organizations come to our monthly support meetings and hear each other's stories.”

“We have a parent crying because their kid came out, and then we have another parent in the circle that is marching in the next Pride parade,” she continues. “I just think it's beautiful that we listen to one another and grow."

PFLAG Riverview partners with LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+-affirming therapists to provide mental health resources for its members, in part because of the political climate in Florida. The state has enacted a growing number of anti-LGBTQ+ laws and policies in recent years.

"As these bills go into effect, especially living in Florida, the need will be greater for support. The laws are so hurtful,” she says, noting it makes PFLAG's work even more important.

"PFLAG's mission is to offer support and education and for us to learn to advocate for ourselves,” Moeller advises. “Attend a meeting and share about PFLAG, so when you do hear a parent talk about a child who's come out and struggling, you can say, 'Check out PFLAG Riverview; everyone is accepted there.'"

PFLAG Safety Harbor opened in Feb. 2023. President and Founder Wendy Vernon's youngest child came out to her at 11. "We were accepting, but I looked for support and couldn't find any nearby," she remembers. "I decided that if there was nothing here, I needed to do it.

“I got my dream team board together,” she continues. “I knew it was something I was driven and meant to do. We hit the ground running, hoping to reach more people. We are here and ready."

Like Riverview, PFLAG Safety Harbor offers meetings and social events. Vernon says the latter “are two-fold — to have fun together and provide a community, and indirectly to provide support.” She hopes the chapter’s efforts encourage other allies to step up.

"Ally is an action word. It's not a title that you just take,” she says. “It's something that you do. Speak out. Allies can correct people and

educate them when they speak in a hateful or offensive manner toward our LGBTQ+ community. Allies can show up and join our meetings and our socials. There's power in numbers."

Donations are welcome at all PFLAGs, including Safety Harbor. It helps reach more people and fund opportunities to provide other services.

"We are here to keep everyone moving forward in these times, provide community and support, and build relationships with community partners to find more safe spaces," Vernon explains. PFLAG Safety Harbor does that by interacting with as many individuals and organizations as possible, even those in opposition to their efforts.

“Even if they disagree, they still need to hear it,” Vernon notes. “PFLAG's motto is we lead with love. We use these moments to teach, support and advocate."

PFLAG Greater Orlando has done that since 1992. President Jerry Collins and Board Members at Large, Tom and Ann Grimes, are three of eight volunteers at its helm.

As in all PFLAGs, members help one another in confidential peer-to-peer support groups. They share their stories and experiences, something Collins understands firsthand.

After being outed to his parents at 19, he was sent to a counselor who told him nothing was wrong with him. That therapist introduced him to PFLAG.

"In my first PFLAG meeting, I was very nervous. Thankfully they saved me towards

the end,” he remembers. “My voice was quivering. I told my story. Almost everyone hugged me … that was the first time I experienced or even expected that other parents accepted their kids."

Ann Grimes says that Collins’ story is sadly not unique. Many people lose family members when they or their child comes out. PFLAG helps them find acceptance.

"When first coming to a meeting, people are usually in distress," Collins notes. "The person always feels alone because they have not yet talked to friends or family, or if they're lucky, they had friends, family or a counselor bring them to us. When they are in our meeting for the first time, we try to let them listen and hold their story until the end.

"What usually happens is they finally feel like they are no longer alone,” he continues. “They hear some of the same stories they are experiencing, opening the door for them to be welcomed and feel supported."

“Our meetings are open to anybody in the LGBTQ+ community, allies and family members,” Ann Grimes adds. “They're open to anybody who would like to attend and get information, discuss issues they are having or just looking for some help in this [environment] where everything seems to fall against the LGBTQ+ community.”

She says that about 70% of families who attend involve a trans family member who’s coming out, some of whom previously came out as lesbian, gay or bisexual. They call it a “second coming-out process.”

“It is a major railroad for those families. They don't know what to do,” she says. “They are scared, especially with the climate right now. Older members or parents who

are comfortable with their kids are coming to us because they don't know what to do with all the hate. It's new ground for us.”

PFLAG Greater Orlando has partnered with organizations like Equality Florida for that reason. Collins says the organizations are “a big circle of friends and family.”

“We made great strides in the state with gay marriage, gender-affirming care, then suddenly we're back in the 50s again,” Tom Grimes says. “We're relying on Equality Florida to do the legal fight and we'll continue our advocacy and education that we have available here in the Central Florida area."

The three say that other PFLAG chapters and the flagship nonprofit provide seminars and information to help them stay informed, allowing them to help others. They agree that allies can help by volunteering and speaking to school board members, principals and senators.

"We are always looking for volunteers, members and corporate sponsors,” Tom Grimes notes. “If you want to help our organization as an ally, even if you don't have anyone LGBTQ+ people close to you or in your family, everyone can help us. If you want to help our cause and spread the word, you can be part of our family."

“Family isn't always blood; it's who you surround yourself with,” Ann Grimes adds. “You always have a home at PFLAG."
