Why?

Contemporary practice is increasingly demanding that our graduates are skilled in rigorous design research. In particular, there is a demand for critical knowledge of digital design principles and methods of enquiry.

The WSA traditionally used the studio as a comprehensive setting to conduct design research. However, given the pressures of the studio, there is a lack of time to conduct formal design research activities. The result is ad-hoc and largely depends on the student’s own initiative to explore and research methods, intellectual areas of interest, and design responses.

What?

A new third/fourth thread of teaching titled Design Principles and Methods. Added to Studio, Architectural Technology, History and Theory.

Focus on Design Research principles and methods in light of contemporary practice.

Allied with the Practice Research Group.

How?

New area leader

A treble module that spans Years 1, 2, and 3. Total 30 credits carved out of Studio.

Year 1: Fundamentals;Year 2: Digital Enquiry;Year 3: Design Research Manifesto.

Integrate with Design Studio and other modules, but maintain separate identity, assessment, and resources.

DPM 3 DESIGN RESEARCH MANIFESTO AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this module is to reflect on the basics of architectural conceptualisation in an intuitive graphic manner. It explores the use of analogical tools in the analysis of the built environment. The module introduces the essential principles and techniques that for communicating ideas. Module content includes fieldwork, site mapping, model making, forms of rapid representation and projection, translating architectural ideas into visual representations.

The aim of this module is to establish the connections between design creativity and computational principles and methods in architectural design. This module introduces students to the use of digital tools for design enquiry. It extends the concepts and techniques of design investigations to include digital principles and methods for representation, form-finding, parametric design, modelling, simulation, rationalisation, and fabrication.

The aim of this module is to gain a critical position within the various design methods adopted by students in previous years. Thus, the module is a platform where students can consolidate their architectural skills by exploring previously unforeseen links between their own design intentions and wider issues in fields such as politics, ethics, philosophy, economy, science, systems and the artistic act. The outcome of the module is a design research manifesto.

The content is coupled to the studio of the 1st Year Autumn Semester. Therefore the focus is on basic and rapid representational techniques applied at the scale of ‘dwelling’ or ‘house’.

The content is coupled to the studio of the 2nd Year Autumn Semester. Therefore the focus is on the analysis of context and the design of appropriate architectural responses using rigorous digital techniques.

The content is coupled to the studio of the 3rd Year Autumn Semester. Therefore the focus is on processes and critical evaluation resulting in an integrated design research manifesto.

• Learn and develop principles of conceptualisation, abstraction, and composition. • Introduce Essential design principles and representational methods. • Develop an understanding of how the worlds of ideas and representation are interlinked and help to define successful architectural design. • Establish an analytical and sensorial approach towards design through studying exemplary dwellings and representing them using different analogical techniques. • Understand basic techniques of two dimensional graphic representation and respective translation into three dimensional constructs.

DPM 2 DIGITAL ENQUIRY LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Critically evaluate the role of digital tools and their effect on the proposed design response. • Select and use appropriate digital techniques for representation, 3D modelling, material assignment, lighting, animation, analysis, and fabrication. • Creatively integrate digital tools and techniques in the design process.

DPM 3 DESIGN RESEARCH MANIFESTO LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Understand the concept of processes in regards to design and its methods. • Apply concepts (analogy), methods (references) and processes (production) in context to critically evaluate architectural proposals. • Select and use appropriate digital techniques for representation, 3D modelling, material assignment, lighting, animation, analysis, and fabrication. Made by hand vs made by digital means shall be just one viewpoint of the investigation. • Investigate design and design related processes in a disciplined and rational manner.
