The mission of the Ypsilanti Food Co-op, which was incorporated in 1975, is to provide high-quality food and goods, and produce ecologically and sustainably while practicing cooperative economics. The Food Co-op has served the community well over the years, and during the pandemic, rapid, somewhat unexpected growth occurred increasing sales. With the help of the MI-Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant, the Co-op continues to grow and be a vital pillar in the community. “Ron Stevens has helped me to turn volunteers into staff, enhance communication with our board, develop budgets, assist with an expansion project, walk us through the process of borrowing money and help us manage our recent growth plans,” shares Corinne Sikorski, general manager of the Co-op. During their recent expansion into a new café, bakery, and prepared food counter, MI-SBDC’s Stevens helped with understanding the costs of adding a different operation to the portfolio, budgeting and securing funding.

B2B Sales: A Strategic Approach

I want students to walk away from my classes with real-world strategies they can implement on the job. I want them to see sales as chess, not roulette—it’s not a game of chance but one of anticipation. — Dale J. Kaminski

SALES MANAGEMENT Dale J. Kaminski specializes in sales management, a field in which he has more than 11 years of experience. Kaminski works as a wholesaler for Nuevo Living, a furniture and lighting company, where he oversees operations of the Midwest U.S. region. In this role, he trains new account executives and collaborates with company owners on product development, protocol and strategy. Kaminski began teaching sales at WCC in 2023 because of his passion for community college and teaching. “I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from some of the brightest minds in the furniture industry. One insight I’ve picked up is that “sales are like a river,” he said. “What you see today will already be downstream tomorrow. I want to share with students how to stay competitive in an ever-changing field and how to approach new challenges strategically.” Currently working towards his MBA, he has earned an associate degree from Grand Rapids Community College and worked as a sales representative for Art Van Furniture. He progressively took on more ambitious roles within the company, and later at Klingman’s Furniture, Nuevo Living, and also as a consultant for his own LLC. His extensive experience motivated him to pass it on to others as a college instructor.
