NOW PAVILION THE WASHINGTON PAVILION OF ARTS AND SCIENCE

BY MICHELE WELLMAN

Welcome back to Now!Pavilion. Now that the temperature has risen, the opportunity for outdoor activities increases exponentially. Summer holds many of my fondest childhood memories. Starting at age 9, I attended a summer camp in Maine for two months each year. Camp Somerset kept me busy, and I was able to avoid potential “brain drain” effects summer may have on kids. Families traveling across the region, Members with their guests and kids attending our annual summer camp offerings all have the opportunity to learn while having fun at the Washington Pavilion. From art to science, and everything in between, there is surely something for everyone. Kids of all sizes and even adults are enjoying Hands-On Harley-Davidson, our traveling exhibition in the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Hands-On HarleyDavidson, brilliantly exemplifies this idea of learning while having fun. The exhibition includes a hands-on dealership with two kid-sized Road King®-inspired motorcycles with interchangeable parts and road gear. Perhaps the best features are the interactive monitors mounted in front of the motorcycles. They allow riders to see themselves while riding the bike and also have a first-person experience through scenic Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills. In addition to the dealership, Hands-On Harley-Davidson also includes an engineering lab. Concepts relating to physics, speed and motion can be explored by launching golf balls on winding, wavy tracks. As their eyes light up and the smiles take over their faces, these kids are learning and not even realizing that education is taking place. The Pavilion is all about making everything so cool that kids want to learn more. It’s endearing to watch how curiosity and ingenuity come to life within the Pavilion’s walls.

Hands-On Harley-Davidson is in the Kirby Science Discovery Center until September, 21, 2014, and I highly recommend that you come and experience it. We hope to see you soon—there’s so much to learn before school starts!

Pavilion. The Washington Pavilion is the region’s premier cultural, educational and entertainment facility. Its mission is to educate, entertain, inspire, and enrich the community by making arts and science part of our lives. The Visual Arts Center brings visual arts to children and adults through exhibitions, education, collections, and special events. In the past year exhibits shown in the VAC have included Animal Instinct, Human Behavior, Avant Garden, Toulouse-Lautrec and Studio 301. Events like these offer art and culture to our community. Kaia Mogen, the coordinator of the Sidewalk Arts Festival, enthusiastically assures shoppers and art admirers that this is an event you can feel proud to support. “The funds raised go directly to support programming, exhibitions, and education in the Visual Arts Center,” she says. Besides raising funds for the

Visual Arts Center the Sidewalk Arts Festival provides an outlet for a hardworking community of people trying to do the things they love. “It promotes creativity and encourages people to get out there and take risks” Mogen said. Vendors travel from near and far to participate in the market-like art festival. With a vast array of artwork including blown glass, fiber art and garments, furniture, and jewelry, everyone is sure to find something they love. Returning to Sidewalk Arts Festival are Anthony and Darcy Millette, owners of Millette Art. Festival attendees can expect, “a range of functional work with craftsmanship including wood fired pottery and paintings with handmade frames,” Anthony says. The duo have presented at the festival for several years. Anthony has found that “It’s a really fun time! It can be exhausting, but it’s a lot of fun.” In addition to appreciating and purchasing the artwork and products of over 240 vendors whose work represents 18 media of work, visitors can make a day of the festival by participating in the Face it Together Sioux Falls March Into the Light at 6:30 a.m., grabbing a bite to eat, enjoying the many live performers, and participating in fun activities for the kids! Children can join the fun in the Children’s Studio and participate in face painting, and many other interactive activities. Created in Milwaukee by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in partnership with the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Hands-On Harley-Davidson focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Standards-based learning opportunities for preschool and school-age children and hands-on fun for everyone make it a great family experience. “Hands-On Harley-Davidson provides a fun and family-friendly environment for children to learn about motorcycles. Motorcycles are part of the rich culture of South Dakota, and it’s been a great opportunity to witness people’s enthusiasm as

we’ve prepared for this exhibition. This exhibition incorporates the love of motorcycles with education to create a one-of-a-kind experience,” said Erica Lacey, Director of the Kirby Science Discovery Center. Hands-On Harley-Davidson was made possible by a grant from The Harley-Davidson Foundation and invites children to explore a pretend motorcycle dealership while learning about the people, places and processes that make a community work. The exhibit features a replicated retail setting with two kid-sized motorcycles inspired by a HarleyDavidson Road King®.

In addition to the dealership, the exhibit includes a big engineering lab experience with tracks, loops and jumps that mimic your favorite skate park, winding road, rollercoaster ride or half-pipe. Three unique launchers, motion-tracking software and room to build your own freestyle track makes the drop of a golf ball a different experience every time. In a pickle herself, needing to hide 400 cases of gin, Billie snatches Jimmy’s wallet to find the address of his summer home when she finds out that Jimmy and Eileen will be out of town for the weekend, she and her gang sneak into Jimmy’s beach house basement and hide the cases of alcohol, illegal during the prohibition era. To Billie and the gang’s surprise, Jimmy, Eileen and the wedding party return home early. In an attempt to not get caught, Billie and her buddies dress up and act as house servants. But things don’t go as planned when, on the night before his wedding, the playboy meets Billie Bendix, a bubbly and feisty bootlegger who melts his heart. Jimmy has been married three, or maybe four times, before, and is getting ready to marry self-obsessed Eileen Evergreen, a professional modern dancer. Drunkenly, Jimmy admits to Billie that he must marry someone respectable or his mother will disinherit him, so he’s marrying someone he doesn’t truly love. Billie could care

Gallery Highlights from the Washington Pavilion’s 32 NOW!PAVILION

Kim Fink: Word of Mouth June 6 - Sept 26 Gallery D

Kim William Fink is interested in how we define ourselves by how we develop our cultural memories or place ourselves within cultural groups. In a generation of symbology and imagery, Fink is untangling the confusion and re-establishing what the memories mean to him, individuals and groups.

Jenny Braig east RIVER west June 6 - Sept 26 Gallery F

east RIVER west includes new paintings by Jenny Braig. From a distance Braig’s paintings look like a realistic representational landscape, but up close the textured surface overrides the implied perspective. There are a lot of contrasts and juxtapositions in the form of her work that make her paintings fresh and visually interactive. Bright and joyful colors inspire the viewers, contrasting textures focus attention on the surface of the paintings, and the South Dakota landscapes remind people of places they have been.

Leadership and Honoring June 13 - October12 Closing Reception October 10 Gallery B

The headdress exhibit entitled Leadership and Honoring is on loan from the Heritage Center at Pine Ridge. Eagle feathers were earned on the battlefield by brave deeds witnessed by a warrior society and displayed on their headdresses with quillwork, beadwork and horsehair. War leaders were the only men who were allowed to wear a headdress either into battle or for ceremonial purposes. The exhibit will include 10 full-size headdresses, two contemporary headdresses by Dwayne Wilcox and the famous top hat of Chief American Horse when he traveled to Washington, D.C. to negotiate peace in the late 1880’s.

ARLO GUTHRIE ALICE’S RESTAURANT: 50TH ANNIVERSARY

April 27, 2015

This legendary folk singer-songwriter returns to the Mary W Sommervold Hall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his iconic song, “Alice’s Restaurant.” When a young Arlo, son of renowned folk legend Woody Guthrie, was arrested for littering on Thanksgiving Day back in 1965, he couldn’t know that it would launch his career, turning him into a counterculture hero. It ultimately helped spark an entire generation to embrace social activism. Guthrie charmed audiences with his witty stories, amusing anecdotes, and folk favorites at his last appearance here with the South Dakota Symphony, and this concert promises even more with a brand new program.
