These woodland gardens produce some of the most spectacular displays of wildflowers in the Mid-Atlantic region. Fifty-five species of rare natives are located on Mt. Cuba Center’s natural lands. Seven of those so rare they are only seen in five or fewer sites in the state. Twenty-one others are only found on six to twenty sites in Delaware. Mt. Cuba began in 1935 as the private estate and garden of Mr. and Mrs. Lamont du Pont Copeland. Now the stately brick family home, on the National Register of Historic Places, houses Mt Cuba Center, an acclaimed horticultural institution specializing in Piedmont native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. This is the woodland garden of plant lover’s dreams. Weeds and invasive plants are banished, deer kept outside, everything interesting labeled. Seldom seen wildflowers crowd the path edges. Understory trees, like dogwood, delicately accent the golden green light bathing the vistas. Kathy Jentz, Editor, Washington Gardener Magazine and Cheval Force Opp, of Cheval’s 2nd Act accompany the tour for personalized attention. The tour will begin with a 20-minute video followed by a guided tour of the gardens. The garden tour is a two-hour stroll through hillside woodland gardens, occasionally on uneven ground and unpaved paths. The total distance walked is about one-half mile. Good walking shoes needed for uneven natural paths and hilly terrain. The gardens are not wheelchair accessible. Strollers are not permitted.
