THE JEWISH QUEEN LEAR

Georgetown University’s Davis Performing Arts Center

If it’s not one thing, it’s your mother! Written in 1898, Gordin’s story of power and pride revolves around Mirele Efros, a wealthy widow and clever business woman who wants to find a good wife for her son. When her children turn against her, Mirele experiences a fall of Shakespearean proportions. Wildly successful in its time, Gordin’s masterpiece of Yiddish theater shines in a scintillating new translation. Produced in partnership with the Georgetown University Theater and Performance Studies Program. Featuring Tonya Beckman, Valerie Leonard, Karl Kippola, Alana D. Sharp, Sue Jin Song, and Frank X. 6

PART 1

The Foundry

The Anacostia River, one of the most polluted rivers in the US for decades, has long been the dividing line of income inequality in DC. In the past few years, the city has invested heavily in cleaning up the river and bringing development to its shores. In fact, the banks of the Anacostia are currently DC’s fastest-growing area. But as housing prices increase, those who live along the banks of the river and have suffered its environmental effects are being pushed out, just as the river is finally getting clean. Co-presented with Avodah, Tzedek DC, Operating Understanding DC, the Capital Jewish Museum, and Jews United for Justice.
