to 2016!
One World Week is now in its third decade! As well as being one of the UK’s largest student-run festivals, it is also arguably one of the most inclusive. Reflecting the diversity of cultures and opportunities on campus, it aims to give students the opportunity to showcase their efforts while encouraging them to reflect on issues that affect our One World. One World Week is comprised of the Fashion Show, the Fashion Show After-Party, Warwick’s Got Talent, Forums and Sports. Over the course of six days, campus will come alive through a series of debates and discussions, performances, sporting tournaments and events, as well as cultural exhibitions and workshops. We invite everyone to explore what One World Week has to offer through this booklet. We look forward to welcoming you to One World Week 2016 from Saturday 23rd January to Friday 29th January 2016! The Fashion Show is a celebration of international culture at Warwick and one of the most anticipated and successful events of One World Week. It encompasses the diversity of culture at Warwick through clothing and performance as well as the choreographed main models. It is a chance for students to express their creativity through a visually-enticing show, and for cultural and performance societies to come together and showcase their traditions and talent alongside one another. It is enjoyed by students, sponsors and University staff alike.
Identity Crisis explores people’s journey in society. It will be an out-
standing, breathtaking event which stimulates the personal development of all students and strives to inspire them to accept who they are and appreciate the world’s mosaic of cultures. The audience will bear witness to a beautiful journey of colour, emotion and style. The show will consist of four acts: Power, Fame, Money and Love. Each act will symbolize a person’s transformation in the struggle to find their purpose in life. Various cultural societies will be featured in the show: approximately 10 societies are in each act according to what their outfit/concept will represent.

The Fashion Show After-Party Join the Models, Societies & Clubs and celebrate in style. The annual after-party is a guaranteed sell-out, taking place in the VIP area of Neon. With over 400 people in attendance every year, it’s the staple event of the New Year. What better way to kick off 2016?

Warwick’s Got Talent was inspired by Britain’s Got Talent, but with a twist. This competition promises to bring the hype of a talent show to campus and provides Warwick students with the opportunity to showcase their talents. In addition to prizes for Overall Winner, Runner-Up and Most Unusual Talent, we will also be collaborating with the Music Centre to offer a special prize for the Best Traditional or Folksong Performance. Audiences, get ready to be swept off your feet by the finalists!
Forums Throughout One World Week 2016, Forum will host three events, each one exploring a different global issue. By presenting a panel of high profile speakers, Forum seeks to provide a range of perspectives on pressing matters. The selected themes are ones which are currently of international interest. The opportunity to pose questions to the panel encourages attendees to critically assess their opinions and, as a result, make more informed decisions.
Demystifying the Orient Date: Tuesday 26th January 2016 Time: 5 pm – 7 pm Venue: IMC.002 Amongst nowadays’ most challenging geopolitical areas is indisputably the Middle East. The region has been shaken by an incredible amount of crises, and is still today in great turmoil, leaving political instability to often be seen as a defining characteristic of the Middle East. Indeed, the list of internal and external conflicts raging in the region is impressive: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been the dominating dispute and a real puzzle for diplomats, both from the East and the West; while the more recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars have created additional tension in the region. Being the most current crisis taking place in the region, this involves so many actors, threats and challenges that it is fast-becoming the most urgent affair in international relations. Some experts are describing the civil war going on in Syria, along with the rise of the Islamic State, as a potential precursor to World War III. While the media commonly focuses on the repercussions on the Western world, this talk will address an important question: what is the impact of this instability on the development of the Middle East?
A Generation of Vanished People Date: Wednesday 27th January 2016 Time: 4 pm – 6 pm Venue: Woods-Scawen “Everyday, two Aylans”- this headline by a French newspaper makes a statement that is revolting beyond words: on average, per day, two children coming to seek safety in Europe with their family drown and are washed up on the Greek or Turkish shores. Early September 2015, the whole world was shocked by the photo of the young Aylan Kurdi, and a wave of empathy was felt among social media and the press. Yet hundreds of refugees today still meet the same fate as Aylan, in complete indifference and ignorance. While Hungary and other governments in Europe are hostile to the idea of welcoming refugees, some, such as Germany and Austria, took a step forward to make their lives a little more bearable by offering them shelter, political asylum and jobs: giving them the opportunity to start their lives over. This talk will try to understand the global refugee crisis better and find out what are the potential implications that come with such a vast population being displaced.
Supranational Unions as a Stepping Stone Date: Thursday 28th January 2016 Time: 5 pm – 7 pm Venue: Woods-Scawen As the world is becoming increasingly interconnected today, the number of supranational unions seems to be rising at a similar rate. While the most representative example is often considered to be the European Union, which has not only achieved economic trade and intergovernmental cooperation but also created a real political entity with international political elections, many other unions have followed the same path. Regional cooperation and peace, economic exchanges and social progress have been promoted as well, through organizations such as the ASEAN in South East Asia. However, the legitimacy of these unions are often questioned and contested, and their future seems fragile: in the European Union, the Greek debt crisis has created tensions between major members, while the United Kingdom’s exit is open to debate. This talk will address issues of legitimacy and whether a future of integration and prosperity is possible for supranational unions.

Rock-up sessions: These sessions are available for anyone to turn up and play. There are maximum numbers in each session so it is best for people to book online to guarantee their space! They will be casual friendly sessions for any level. Tournaments: These sessions will be run as mini tournaments, it is essential that teams book in advance - the team captain of each team needs to register online, while all players will register on the day. Team captains will be contacted via email confirming their details. Slightly more serious.
