Police promise

Cop shop upgrade becoming state election issue The state opposition has pledged to rebuild the Drouin Police Station if it wins November's election, but the government says Victoria Police hasn't asked for it. By William Kulich @WillPJK

Shadow police minister Edward O'Donohue joined Narracan Liberal MP Gary Blackwood outside the station yesterday to make the $6 million promise. "The Drouin Police Station, built in 1970, has long since passed its use buy date," Mr O'Donohue told media. "It's time to give the hard-working local police a contemporary, modern police station, and that's exactly what we'll do. "This police station will be built with a capacity to extend its hours, and if needs be go to 24 hours a day in the future." Asked by the Baw Baw Citizen if he had discussed the funding with police, Mr O'Donohue said "absolutely." "Through Gary, local police have been consulted over a significant period of time, and I've had

discussions with force command [and] with the Police Association," he said. "You just have to look at the building to realise it's past its use-by date, needs to be replaced, and a Matthew Guy government will do exactly that." Labor is yet to field a candidate for Narracan - Mr Blackwood joked that he was "feeling quite lonely at the moment" without an opponent but a spokesperson for Eastern Victoria Labor MP Harriet Shing said police were yet to approach the Andrews government about the Drouin station. "Victoria Police are best placed to determine their infrastructure priorities," the spokesperson told the Baw Baw Citizen. "Victoria Police hasn’t approached [the] government for funding for Drouin Police Station. "Warragul Police Station has recently been upgraded, which services the Drouin community." Mr Blackwood did however suggest there is demand for an upgrade among local force Continue reading on Page 2

members. "I meet regularly with the inspector here in this region and the former inspector outlined to me that Drouin was in need of upgrade," Mr Blackwood said. "This station was built in 1970, it was built to accommodate six serving officers when Drouin had a population of around 3,000. Now in 2018 we have a population of 18,000 and growing very quickly, and still a station which can only really house, safely and securely, six members of our police force. "We need to do something about that." Asked if there really was a need for an upgraded Drouin station given the size of the Warragul base, Mr Blackwood suggested "there certainly is." "Warragul is also growing in number, its population is now about 20,000; it needs more resources as well," Mr Blackwood said. "It's about 10 minutes in travel time from Drouin, but just the sheer weight of numbers here in Drouin in terms of population indicate that we need a 24/7 police station here, and we need a new station that reflects the demands of modern day policing." Local builder Wayne Farnham was invited to the Liberals' media event to discuss crime on building sites in Baw Baw.

"You can nearly guarantee every weekend on a building site something will go missing, and at the end of the day it doesn't just affect the builders, but it affects people too. "People just moving into their homes may have all their white goods stolen, all their floor coverings stolen, they're excited about moving in and then bang, all their stuff's gone. "The theft off building sites is becoming epidemic in this area." Baw Baw police last month issued a warning to local builders that building sites are popular theft targets. "There’s a building boom in the area, these thefts are going to be more and more common and a potential soft target," a police spokesperson said at the time. "Boom areas across the board get spikes in offences. "We’ve been having discussions with builders about target hardening – engraving, tracking, and so on." The Baw Baw Citizen asked Mr Farnham if increased crime rates on building sites were just something that comes with building booms. "Maybe, but it shouldn't have to be," Mr Farnham said. "At the end of the day, if we can reduce the theft from building sites, it's going to cost the consumer less to build. "We have to do increased security, cameras on building

sites, and for what? At the end of the day it's going to cost you

guys more to build homes if we can't get it under control."

Asbestos discovery and vandalism lead to early end for Civic Park house The discovery of asbestos and vandalism have prompted the Baw Baw Shire to demolish a house and shed next to Warragul's Civic Park earlier than planned. Baw Baw purchased the house at 61 Albert Street in 2010 because of its important location next to the park and West Gippsland Arts Centre. Removal of the house was built into 2017's Warragul Civic Park Master Plan as a priority project, but recent damage to the site has pushed that priority even higher. "A recent inspection identified asbestos in the window seal putty resulting in the removal of all windows," a council spokesperson said in a media release yesterday. "To minimise risk to the community in the interim, temporary fencing was erected to secure the site. "Continued reports of unlawful entry, vandalism and other hazardous activities have resulted in the removal project being brought forward as a priority in the interest of community safety." Graffiti inside the house is easily spotted from outside the site. "A building permit has been issued for the demolition, with works scheduled to take place in the first week of October, weather

permitting," the spokesperson continued. "Upon removal, the site will be scraped and levelled with temporary fencing to remain in place to keep the area restricted. The site will be rehabilitated in accordance with the Warragul Civic Park Master Plan. "No formal rehabilitation works are scheduled given the project has been brought forward in the interest of community safety."

What's in store for the site? The master plan states the site will eventually become an entry plaza for the West Gippsland Arts Centre which "engages with the market area and proposed forecourt to WGAC." "With the proposed removal or the car park and house on Albert Street, this frontage provides the opportunity to create an entrance plaza to Albert Street that engages with the market area and

proposed forecourt to WGAC. "This could include paved areas, seating and garden beds. Terraced seating/mounded grass could also... allow for level changes in this area and provide seating for the market and other events." It would be a significant change for the Arts Centre. Presently the building's connection to Albert Street is via a car park, disconnecting it from the rest of Warragul's CBD.

3 Second Waterford servo permit Explained • A new planning permit presently on display at the site of a proposed petrol station in Warragul's Waterford Rise estate was lodged before the council rejected the project. Councillors last month rejected a planning permit application for the proposed service station at 1 Sandstock Drive after locals raised concerns about safety, neighbourhood character, noise, odour, the impact on wildlife, and more. Applicants for the development are now challenging the council's decision in VCAT, a tribunal which has the power to overturn the council's decision. So what is the new permit about? Where the original application was for the construction of buildings, the new application is for the subdivision of the subject land into two lots. This might seem like a response to the council's decision, but it was part of the development plan from the start. Lodged on 26 June this year, several months before the rejection, the subdivision application clearly shows the proposed service centre development occupying one of the two lots. It is not clear what the other lot would be used for, although on diagrams supplied to the council much of it is covered by a drainage easement.

Stolen car used in school burglary, set alight

Stay in the know with the Baw Baw Citizen's free email updates!

A ute stolen from the Drouin Speedway last week was used in a burglary at a Warragul school on Saturday before being found burnt-out in Drouin on Sunday. The Toyota HiLux ute went missing from

the speedway (which, confusingly, is located in Jindivick) between Wednesday of last week and last Saturday. While unregistered, the vehicle was fitted with registration plates RQK 375 and was worth around $2,000.

A police spokesperson said the ute was used in a burglary at Marist Sion College Warragul at around 11pm on Saturday night. Around $7,000 of tools were stolen from a school maintenance shed, while roughly $2,500 of tools were stolen from a

construction site at the school. Tools stolen from the shed included cordless drills, grinders, two chainsaws, and a socket set. The construction site lost a demolition saw worth around $1,500 on its own

as well as a laser level. Police say the car was found burnt in Bellbird Park Drouin at around 8am Sunday morning. Police have asked that any information about the incidents be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Free Children's Week expo returns to Warragul next month

A fundraiser for the Cancer Council will be held at Drouin Home Timber & Hardware early next month. Staff member Will Burrell has committed to shaving his head at the event to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Other fundraising activities will include tradie dress-ups for kids, a live demonstration from chainsaw sculptor Paul Stafford with a silent auction for the end work, carnival-style guessing games, a sausage sizzle, face painting, and more. The event will kick off at 11am on 6 October, and will run until 1.30pm.

A retired W Class tram will soon call Thorpdale Primary School home. The school was chosen as one of four successful applicants for a tram as part of a state government restoration program. Ninety-six retired trams were allocated for community projects, and 1,500 applications were received from across the country and overseas. Thorpdale Primary will turn their tram into a classroom.

Almost $2,000 of tools were stolen from a ute parked in the driveway of a School Road, Trafalgar home earlier this month. Overnight on the night of Sunday 16, unknown offenders forced the locks of two toolboxes mounted to the Mitsubishi Triton ute. A police spokesperson said the offenders removed various tools, mostly related to plumbing. Police ask that anyone with information about the incident contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Two vehicles were damaged while parked in the Drouin McDonalds car park on Sunday. Police say an unknown person smashed the window of a grey Holden Captiva wagon. An unknown person also damaged the passenger side door of a blue Nissan Pulsar by hitting it with a rock, causing around $1,000 damage. Police have asked that anyone with information about the incidents contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Baw Baw Shire is preparing for its annual Children's Week Expo. The free-entry expo will run from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Tuesday 23 October at Council’s Family and Children’s Services building at 144 Normanby Street in Warragul. "Council staff will be on hand from kindergarten, family day care, and maternal and child health teams to answer any questions about their service areas," Baw Baw mayor Joe Gauci said in a media release. "Parents will have access to information about immunisation sessions,

key ages and stages to maternal and child health visits. "There will also be loads of child-friendly activities on the day including face painting, craft activities, story time with West Gippsland Libraries, community gardening and outdoor games. More information about the event can be found on the Baw Baw Shire Council's website, or call the council's Family and Children’s Services Team on 5624 2540.

A strong first half effort from Drouin's Under 16 Girls side wasn't enough to hold back Phillip Island at Saturday's Grand Final. At half time the sides were 2-2, but two goals in the second half saw the Breakers pull ahead for a 4-2 victory. "Phillip Island is always the really tough competitor," coach Rebekah Foulds told the Baw Baw Citizen after the game. "We've been at it all season with them, and to keep it two-all for most of the game [was great]. "We were pretty impressed considering a lot of our girls were quite younger, so to go up and put a lot of effort in, to make it to the grand final this year, was really awesome." The scores were almost closer too, with a late-game goal from a Dragons player ruled offside. "It was a close call, it could have gone either way," Rebekah said. "The officials did a really good job today." The would-be goal was made more impressive by the fact it was kicked by a player usually tasked to defence. "Offside is one of the toughest rules in this game that we try to teach the girls. You've got to have a defender between you and the goalkeeper when the ball's played to you," Rebekah said. "It's just to keep all the games fair and stuff so no one's just hanging around the goalkeeper." Rebekah is proud of the achievements of the club's junior teams this year. "All of Drouin's junior teams that compete in finals made it to the finals this year," she said. "We were the only Drouin team to finish second, so we played the week after all the boys, so that was tough. "We had a gutsy win last week, 2-1 in the final minute, and this week to keep it two-all we were pretty happy with ourselves. "We're looking forward to next season as well. "I'm coming back as coach which is good, it's good for the girls to have a female coach with them so they can learn more. "We're looking to hopefully involve the girls more in all the activities next season, and just push for them to play the best they can and hopefully move up in some of the levels."

Early season prep delivers Drouin Under 12s a strong finals victory An early start to the season has ended with a 4-0 victory for Drouin Dragons Under 12 Mixed over rivals Leongatha Knights on Saturday. The victory ended a strong season for the team, but it didn't come easy. "That was awesome, a good feeling," coach Alan Silver told the Baw Baw Citizen after the game. "The boys played really well. It was a pretty tough game, there was pressure on both sides and Leongatha played a fantastic game as well. "We've done really well to get where we got to, and we worked hard for it this season." Drouin also had to work hard for goals in the grand final game, despite how the scores might make it look. "It's a good number to have as a win in soccer for sure," Alan continued. "We had a few lucky breaks and got a couple of goals, and we battled our way in the end. One of our boys kicked the hat-trick, and my other striker kicked one as well. That was awesome." The season started unusually early for the side too, and that might have been key to the team's success. "This year we certainly drilled them pretty hard on the training sessions, on the drills we did," Alan said.

"We actually started the season a month or month and a half earlier than what we'd normally start at. "We just filtered out (sic) all the good players and ended up with a really good side." Captain Tristan Silver was pleased with the challenging game, and put the team's success down to "hard work and defence." "We played well and we won!" he told the Baw Baw Citizen.

"I really enjoyed playing. It was good to play with the team and actually play competitively. "I was just really happy with the team and how they played." Much of the team, including coach Alan, will move on to Drouin's Under 14s next season. "Looking forward to seeing what bunch of kids we get, and hopefully we work well with them and can get another good, strong side out of it," he said.

Drouin Under 14s Mixed faced a strong Phillip Island side in their grand final game on Saturday, scoring one point to the Breakers' five. The result was frustrating for the team, which had sat comfortably at the top of the ladder. "Yeah, it was a tough game," coach Jamie Spencer told the Baw Baw Citizen. "They brought a good game today." It was a fast-paced game, too. "They used the ball a lot better than us," Jamie said. "It's always hard being an

"I said to my boys, while being disappointed, at the same time I'm pretty proud of their year." The team's strong achievements throughout the season are even more impressive when considering how young the side is. "We've got five bottom age players who will be in the 14s again next year."

Drouin Under 16s 'on fire' in final win Drouin Dragons Under 16 Mixed defeated Phillip Island 4-1 to win their 2018 Gippsland Soccer League grand final on Saturday. The result was a typically strong one for the side, which finished the season at the top of the ladder. "Yeah, it's not too bad," captain Enrico Ercoles told the Baw Baw Citizen. "I'm proud of the boys (while playing in the mixed category, the team is entirely male) - we all played good. "Most of the time I give them a hard time about how they play and everything, but I'm proud they all coped with me. "I'm really happy." While Drouin came away with the most points, Phillip Island kicked the most goals; the first three goals for the Dragons were scored by Breakers players. "They were own goals because they were under so much pressure from the boys and the way we were bringing the ball into the box, the only way they could defend was to go the wrong way," Drouin coach Jon Ercoles told the Baw Baw Citizen. "They were basically facing their own goals to defend a ball, and that was part of the plan: to push them into their own box and squeeze them in there. "In the second half we had better control of the game, we started to move the ball around a little bit more freely and had

plenty of time. Our nerves had cooled down a bit so that was good. "Phillip Island came back at us and gave us about 15 minutes of real pressure, which they got a goal through. We limited them to shoot from outside the box .Then they got a penalty... which our goalkeeper saved. "Towards the last 15 minutes, Josh Cavallin came running down the line, the wind was in his

favour, and he went for a shot and put it right in the top corner, which basically sealed the game. "4-1 is a good win, but the way we played I thought we probably would've been a little bit higher than that. "We were just unlucky with a few shots - the nerves had kicked in with some of our more skilled players, I think they put themselves under a lot of pressure to perform today, and

that showed on the ground. "But I find the kids who were here not under pressure to enjoy the day, they were just on fire, they played exactly the way you'd expect them to play."

Sticking together Drouin's Under 16 Mixed side has performed so well this season the club is creating a whole new team to keep the players together. The Dragons are putting together

a new Under 18 Boys team, which will either play in the state league or in Gippsland. "It's a good transition, because our coach trained us up to playing how we're going to play up there, so this year's more just been a warm-up for what's to come," Enrico Ercoles said. The team's coach agrees. "That will give them a little bit better competition to play against, and they'll develop a lot better that way," Jon Ercoles said. "It's always good to play under pressure because you can work out how you function in those conditions and adapt to it. That's what I'm hoping to develop for next year. "From the body language of the kids and the talk and the way they man up, I feel they're a pretty close-knit bunch and I am pretty sure most of them will be back in next year. "We'll still hold onto this team, we'll probably pick up a few new players. We have key players at the moment who have a set position on the ground, and we've got some players who are still developing their position or their skills so we can work out where they're going to be best positioned. "Doing what we're doing now I'm hoping to develop these kids that one two years more and then we'll have kids who are well developed physically and mentally to play that level of game."
