Options Information 2023-2024 Information for Students and Parents/Carers

We have put this booklet together to give you further information that you will find helpful prior to joining Warlingham Sixth Form College in September.

When you get your GCSE results, it is important that you check that they meet the general entry requirements outlined below.

General Entry Requirements

1. You will need to get five or more 9-4 grades at GCSE.

2. You will also need to meet the subject-specific grade requirements. (See the table on pages 3 and 4)

3. If you do not have Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics and/or GCSE English, you must study the subject(s) in the Sixth Form.

Recommended Routes

As you know, our range of courses is large, and includes both A Level and Level 3 Vocational Courses. All students have a free choice of courses with no pre-set blocking in operation.

If you have grades 9-7 in most of your subjects, it is appropriate for you to take three A Levels (including one or two facilitating subjects). In addition, we recommend you consider taking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

If you have five or six GCSEs at grades 9-4 you should consider taking three A Levels or two A Levels and one Vocational Level 3 course.

If you have mainly grade 4s in your GCSEs you should consider taking two or more Level 3 vocational courses.

Course-Specific Entry Requirements

When you get your GCSE results, it is also important that you check that your results meet the minimum grade requirements outlined on pages 3-4 for each subject that you have applied to take.

If you do not meet the minimum grade requirements and you feel very strongly that you would still like to take that course, we are able to consider this on a case-by-case basis. There will be an opportunity to discuss this on the enrolment day. Alternatively, you might like to choose a different course, provided you meet the requirements of that course. Please refer to the blocks on the next page, to see how the replacement course might fit with your other course choices. If there is anything you do not understand, or if you would like some guidance, please contact us by emailing Info@WarlinghamSixthForm.co.uk.

Enrichment Options

All students can select one of our enrichment courses, which include the CSLA, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). Please see pages 5-6 for full details of the enrichment courses we are offering for the 2023-2024 Academic Year.

Please have a think about your preferred enrichment options. The option offer will not be finalised before enrolment and so it is possible that we may be able to offer additional choices.

We are looking forward to welcoming you into Warlingham Sixth Form College in September.

3. GCSE Maths / Functional Maths and GCSE English have not yet been timetabled. All students without a minimum grade 4 in GCSE Maths and/or GCSE English have to attend these lessons, and therefore will not be able to choose another option in whichever block these subjects are timetabled into.

4. All students in Year 12 commit to two lessons per fortnight of one of the ‘enrichment’ options. These options will be finalised over the next few weeks and students will be informed of the options at enrolment. Further details of these enrichment courses are highlighted later in this booklet.

5. It is our intention to run all of the courses offered on the blocking chart in September on the basis that the numbers taking the course remain sufficiently high. If a decision is made not to run a course, students and parents will be informed immediately and alternative choices will be offered.

ENRICHMENT OPTIONS

All students in Year 12 commit to one lesson per week of one of the ‘enrichment’ options. We offer these options to help ensure that our college students are well-rounded and well-prepared for their applications post-18. The options currently available for 2023-2024 are listed below; it is possible that we may be able to offer additional choices. We will be able to give more information on additional enrichment activities when you enrol.

Community Sports Leadership Award

This is a nationally recognised coaching qualification that enables successful learners to lead groups of people in sport/activity, under indirect supervision.

This is a course designed for students over the age of 16 years to gain experience in leading and coaching students in a variety of sports and activities. We have the opportunity to regularly visit local primary schools on a Wednesday afternoon.

Cooking for College

Students cook a range of different products that allow them to explore different cooking skills and techniques.

Later on in the term there is opportunity for students to direct the recipe choices. (Students will need to supply their own ingredients.)

There is also an opportunity to take an online Hygiene Test.

Core Sport

Core Sport is an opportunity for students to continue with a healthy, active lifestyle. Students can switch off from the everyday exam pressures and enjoy participating in physical activity with their peers.

Students will collaborate and decide which activities they want to participate in. An example of previous years’ options are Fitness Suite, Football, Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, Trampolining and Swimming. This option also provides an excellent chance to play sporting fixtures against other Sixth Forms / Colleges.

Was Brexit a good idea? Should Euthanasia be legalised? Has social media damaged our society? If you find yourself having opinions on moral, social and political questions such as these or simply enjoy putting your points across in an argument then Debating Enrichment would be a perfect choice for you.

Over the year, we will spend time considering how to structure a debate before choosing a range of topics to debate and discuss.

ENRICHMENT OPTIONS

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Gold award is a personalised programme of development that covers five areas; volunteering, physical, skills, expedition and residential. It is open to everyone regardless of whether they have had any previous involvement in the D of E programme.

You will be supported and guided on the programme during enrichment time, but you will also need to undertake activities in addition. The beauty of the programme is that it is fully customized towards you. Many activities can count towards D of E, such as helping out other year groups in school, sports coaching, helping at Scouts, etc. You will also get to experience an expedition in the Lake District.

This award could make you stand out from the crowd.

Enterprise

Students will set up and run a Social Enterprise – a “not-for-profit” organisation that operates to benefit society. Essentially, students will work together to operate a business that raises money for chosen charities. Last year’s enterprise students chose Cancer Research as their chosen charity.

The Enterprise option encourages students to work in teams, solve problems, manage their time, manage budgets and do something under their own control. It is ideal for signing off Applied Skills in the Graduation booklet and for putting something different and meaningful in university and job applications.

Students will be taught all aspects of Business Management and will be expected to put their knowledge into practice as an “employee” of their Social Enterprise.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

This is a highly sought-after AS-equivalent qualification. It is especially suitable for potential Oxbridge Candidates, medics, scientists, historians, and lawyers.

The Extended Project provides students with the opportunity to develop and extend one or more of their subjects or investigate a personal interest or activity outside their main programme of study. The project is based on a topic chosen by the student who will be required to plan, research and carry out the project as well as deliver a presentation to a non-specialist audience.

The EPQ provides a range of benefits for any students undertaking the qualification and is looked upon favourably by university admissions tutors as well as employers.
