Is #Feesmustfall season three on the way? Dennis Delport @Dennisdelport

F

ees Must Fall was yet again a hot topic when students of the University of Cape Town (UCT) gathered for a mass meeting led by Fees Must Fall activist, Athabile Nonxuba. This comes after the university’s Student Representative Council (SRC) reportedly sent students an e-mail that informed them that UCT will remove students who have yet to settle debts from residences. A Fees Must Fall activist who attended the meeting, told TimesLIVE the university was acting unfairly towards these students. “It’s about all the issues that UCT are avoiding. They are delaying and don’t want to solve problems. There have been unsuccessful negotiations and meetings. We’ve had enough‚” she said.

Athabile Nonxuba busy adressing students at UCT.

Elijah Moholola, UCT spokesman, confirmed to TimesLIVE that the protest motives were centered mainly on continuous negotiations regarding the conditions in which insourced workers are employed. “The UCT executive has worked tirelessly over the past year to address issues and to ensure the smooth insourcing of previously outsourced workers at UCT‚”

Moholola said: “The executive is still in negotiations with unions and workers on some issues and will honour this ongoing commitment to resolve any issues that may arise.” Moholola added that 23 students were on a “grace period”, following financial exclusion‚ saying the fees had been outstanding for 15 months. He was unable to comment on the extent to which classes would be disrupted‚ nor could he

suggest what measures UCT would put in place to manage the protest. Nonxuba called for the university to shut down, and a protest was planned for the morning of 5 September. This was however cancelled as UWC obtained an interdict from the Labour Court in Cape Town, according to TimesLIVE. According to Perdeby, on 6 September, the South African Police

Service (SAPS) were stationed at the Prospect street entrance outside University of Pretoria’s (UP) Hatfield campus where a protest was planned by the EFF Student Command UP (EFFSC- UP). The planned protest was in response to the disciplinary hearings of four students who allegedly held a UP staff member hostage in the Merensky Library on 26 May. On 5 September, the EFFSC-UP posted on Facebook saying, “We will never forget those in need. Those who stood for nothing, but better conditions for the marginalised and forgotten in the institution. Tomorrow we have a date with the enemy…” In the post, they called for “solidarity against racism and institutionalized tyranny”. The post was made under the hashtag #FearFokol. Tensions we’re also high at the Cape Town University for Technology (CPUT) this week as students clashed with armed police.

Humiliation seen as the root of trauma by Opperman Lewis Colette Combrink @CombrinkColette

In her book, Apartheid: Britain’s bastard child, psychologist Hélène Opperman Lewis looks at the vital role that humiliation of the Afrikaner by the British played in creating apartheid. It took Opperman Lewis fifteen years to write this book. She states that the book is “an attempt to understand (not justify) from a psychohistorical perspective why Afrikaners created

apartheid in 1948”.

Therefore Opperman Lewis decrees that shamed people shame other people. To feel ashamed has the ability to alienate people. Shame is a kind of threat on the core of the self and one’s identity. “Humiliation is the most powerful and often longerlasting form of shame.” Cycles of violence (revenge) follows the trauma of humiliation in groups. Revenge is a futile attempt to restore lost honour in larger groups. Going into in depth neuroscience, Opperman Lewis touches the unquestionable permanent change that trauma makes to the brain. Opperman Lewis quoted psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk, who noted, “after trauma, the world is experienced with a different nervous system”. Revenge,

leading to new violence – an attempt to restore esteem and lost honour – in the process creates new cycles of violence. “These psychic wounds of humiliation are collectively passed on to future generations in inter– or transgenerational trauma, to avenge their forebears’ humiliation and pain,” she said. On the cycle of revenge Opperman Lewis said that the current black South Africans are already in full enactment against the humiliation bestowed on them during British colonialism and apartheid. “We see the full enactment of the younger generations particularly in the student upheavals and the EFF.” “The current political instability and exploitation of opportunities by the political elite – causing a

worsening socio–economic situation, leading to the devastating high youth unemployment against a history of deprivation, and desperate families who had high hopes now forsaken by most – makes everything worse.” Touching on the future of South Africa, she said that we need to start learning how to deal with what happened by understanding how it all happened. It is her hope that Apartheid: Britain’s bastard child will contribute in this sense, because “we owe it to the children and future generations to understand, or they will be stuck in same shame and guilt”. She ends by stating that psychohistory at least tries to bring us closer to explaining and understanding the psychological “why”. “Why large groups instinctively

and unconsciously commit atrocities of one or another kind, keeping the wheel of human misery turning.” Price: R300 to R350

write the next one. According to the exam section, a lot of students only come the week before the clash, or even the day that they should be writing. This causes a lot of trouble for everyone involved. The exam takes place over a period of a mere 18 days, a little time for a lot of modules, that guarantees that there will be clashes between

modules, another reason why it is extremely important to check your timetable and figure out your clashes beforehand. Unfortunately, if you write two papers on one day, but they do not clash, your choices are limited. You are going to have to write both, or sacrifice one and write it the second opportunity.

Steps to follow when your exam papers clash Megan Olivier @Meganolivier9

Exam slots clashing is a reality. This is a problem few students experience, but there are steps

that need to be taken when students find themselves in this situation.

The first step is to consult Tyrone Kozyn in F4’s exam section. He can be contacted by going there directly, by emailing him at 28218213@nwu.ac.za or by calling him – 018 299 1526. There you will have to explain your situation and fill out a paper with your details, as well the specifics of

your clashing papers. Students will have to write the papers in a special venue in F13, separate from the venue where the rest of the students write those specific papers. If both of your papers are, for example, from 09:00 to 12:00, you will write one from 09:00 to 12:00, have an hour break in which you may not leave the room, and then

they receive information from the mental health practitioner that a person is likely to inflict serious harm to themselves or others. However, “it is not common practice to involve the SAPS in psychological processes if a clear threat does not exist,” Wapad’s source said. According to InGryp, if students experience a psychological emergency, they have the option to conduct a telephonic conversation with a psychologist. If they prefer a physical meeting, the student has two options. The first option is that the person can see a psychologist at the InGryp offices (building E14) opposite the North–

West University Potchefstroom campus (NWU–Puk) healthcare centre. The other option for students is that the psychologist can meet them anywhere on campus. “The aim is to provide the patient with psychological aids in order to challenge the crisis and causes of the crisis, in spite of the challenges,” said the source. “If the situation includes a medical aspect, a member of the NWU emergency personnel will accompany a psychologist to the scene.” NWU–Puk emergency services contact details can be found on the back of student cards.

InGryp: Is your confidentiality ensured? JJ Denton @dentojj

Recent fears have risen in relation to a student’s identity when they call InGryp with a drug related emergency. Word on campus has it that InGryp immediately notifies the South African Police Services (SAPS) when a student contacts them with drug related emergencies. It is also said that this issue has prevented students from seeking help

because of their fears that the police will be notified. When contacted by Wapad regarding this matter, a staff member of InGryp, who chooses to stay anonymous, said that “the provision of psychological services through InGryp are handled with the highest degree of confidentiality. All facets of the process as well as information acquired during this process are included in this confidentiality.” InGryp emphasised that if a student prefers to stay anonymous then it is fully within their rights to do so. The source said that there are however implications to staying anonymous,

as they cannot react to an emergency if they do not know the location of the emergency.

It is not common practice to involve the SAPS in psychological processes. The South African Mental Health Care Act 17 of 2002 (chapter 40), states that the SAPS can only intervene if

Kafeteria.”

FOTO: COLETTE COMBRINK

“I can’t believe it! I know people like memes but I never thought it would go to this extent. My parents would probably not allow me to study memes. I’m sure there is a meme about the degree in memes. But if someone wants to study memes, I say go for it!”

Lutho Hopa, first year in BEng Mechanical “Hulle moet dit na Suid-Afrika bring!

Simone Snyman, derdejaar BCom Bedryfsielkunde

Elaine De Greef, derdejaar BCom Bedryfsielkunde

Oratile Mutebele, Public Management and Governance

“Purple is a weird colour for a university, the maroon is better because it is more wearable in terms of it being unisex.”

Ganya Mbochane, Industrial Psychology and Neighbour Relations “The purple is not suitable with just any colour and the campus student council (CSC) will not be taken seriously, so will our university then be taken seriously?”

CT Mostert, vierdejaar LLB

Jannes Kruger, tweedejaar BCom Regte

Lindiwe Twala, third year Behavioural Sciences

Lesedi Mbochane, Behavioural Sciences

“It’s quite strange because it is the introduction of a whole new world. Our university has always been maroon so if it was up to me it wouldn’t be going anywhere.”

“I feel the three colours show the diversity of our three campuses and the change in colour disturbs each campus’ identity.”

Bennie Truter, eerstejaar BA Kommunikasie

Isago Ketsane, BA Development and Management

“The colour purple has a bad connotation that will now be associated to our university and campus. It also doesn’t look good.”

“I feel the three colours show the diversity of our three campuses and the change in colour disturbs each campus’ identity.”

Mīrror is a group/community for secularists. According to Merriam–Webster, secularism is the indifference to or rejection or exclusion of religion and religious considerations. Mīrror is a space to communicate and share non–dogmatic ideas with like–minded people. Devon du Toit, a second year Physics and Math student, and Kobus le Roux, a second year Computer Science and Physics student, started this group after inevitably discussing religion at a braai. They started this group because they want people to be more comfortable talking about atheism and abolish the stigma surrounding it. Science is also a

much–loved topic. Du Toit and le Roux were tired of going through the process of losing their religion alone. Du Toit describes it as a “lonely revolution for one”. Mīrror is a place for people going through something similar, or who have already been through this. It is a place for sharing your experiences. The group started earlier this year and tries to get together twice a month. It has grown exponentially and at peak there are 40 members. Diversity is encouraged and there are students from every faculty as well. Du Toit and Le Roux can be contacted on mirror.puk@gmail. com and encourage people to “embrace their doubt”.

Hurrican Irma trumps Harvey JJ Denton @dentojj

Less than a week after hurricane Harvey battered the United States of America’s (USA) state of Texas causing 71 confirmed deaths, and millions of dollars in damages before it’s dissipation on 2 September, an even more powerful hurricane was on its way. The hurricane Irma roared through the Caribbean as part of its projected patch toward the state of Florida in the USA. It is the strongest Atlantic Ocean hurricane in recorded history, with wind speeds reaching 295 km/h. St Martin, one of the first islands to be hit by the category 5 hurricane, was “95% destroyed” by the powerful storm. “It’s an enormous catastrophe. I’m

in shock,” said local official Daniel Gibbs in a radio interview. Another island to the southeast of St Martin is Barbuda, they suffered “absolute devastation, Barbuda is now literally rubble,” said prime minister Gaston Browne. The World Surf League said a 16 year old professional surfer died while attempting to ride a monster wave on the same island. 35 000 people from the Caribbean are expected to be affected by the hurricane while at least 30 people have been confirmed dead. These hurricanes can cause severe flooding, tear off roofing, shatter windows and uproot trees turning, them into deadly projectiles. The hurricane preparations have caused a state of chaos in the USA. Residents in Miami, Florida went into a buying frenzy to prepare for

the hurricane. Water bottles and cat food quickly sold out, with reports of people fighting over the last remaining water bottles in retail stores. Many people evacuated the state while others were stocking up on emergency items and stacking sandbags at their properties in an attempt to outlast the storm. Shell announced that many of its gas stations had run out of gas (fuel) as people were evacuating the state. By the time Irma reached Miami, it was already downgraded to a category 4 storm. In Florida, only three deaths have been reported which were due to car accidents caused by the extreme weather conditions. Up to 6.3 million people were asked to evacuate Florida while millions were now without power in the state. Source: AFP

Vaselinetjie omskep in rolprent Chané Jonker @Chanejonk

Dit handel oor haar persoonlike ervaring as ’n sorgwerker by ’n kinderhuis in die Wes–Kaap.

fires. Their main focus is acts of kindness. Jonathan Wayne, the business manager of Liefde Wen says they have a social entrepreneurial focus

and want to help people to do amazing things. “We are branding with a cause, and if you buy our merchandise, you are helping somebody; so if you see someone wearing the brand, you know that someone has been helped”, said Wayne. Liefde Wen wants to make a difference whenever and wherever. Wayne says that while he has the bigger picture in mind, it is important to focus on the smaller things and do what you can. “It’s all about giving. No, it’s about serving, and not just serving humans,

animals are just as important,” he said. An interesting fact is that not every product of Liefde Wen is made in a factory. Bosch’s mother makes a lot of the items, like pillowcases and the bags for the glasses. Together with Leandie du Randt Bosch, Bosch’s wife, she has an online clothing store called SkoonMa. The Muffinz: ‘well–intentioned soul music’ Marita Herselman @MaritaHerselman

T

he Award-winning and frequently SAMA (South African Music Awards)nominated group, The Muffinz will be soothing nomads at OppiKoppi for the third year with their soulful voices. They are proudest of their Silver Standard Bank Ovation Award and the ImpACT Award for Music and Singing, both received in 2012. “Both these are ‘art’ and not ‘commercial’ awards, which means both peers and fans approve and see the greater vision,” said the band. However, their star shines brighter than the awards, said the Muffinz who are currently working on content for their third studio album. They said mostly high energy material should be expected at their OppiKoppi show this year. They have also been rehearsing some of Ray Phiri’s material, the jazz veteran who passed away in July this year due to lung cancer. For them, their greatest achievement is “the ability to be

able to bring back a culture of acoustic music amongst our peers, music outside of jazz or gospel – conscious enough, ‘dancy’ enough, well–intentioned soul music.” The Muffinz have performed at

several international venues like Norway, Mozambique, Swaziland and Algeria – the next leap for them is to triumph in the European festival market. “Having worked with European

partners in Norway and Italy, we have seen possible markets there, in strange and beautiful places filled with lovers of music.” Together the (now) four of them, Simphiwe Kulla (lead electric guitar,

vocals), Mthabisi Sibanda (acoustic guitar, vocals), Gregory Mabusela (drums, vocals), Sifiso Buthelezi (lead electric and vocals) are the mix to a well-risen muffin. Their first OppiKoppi in 2012, Sweet Thing, was “a beautiful experience”. They said it was aptly titled – “a nostalgia as associated with the initial moment of ecstacy when doing something for the first time.” For them, the best part about this music festival is to discover new favourite artists in other genres but they are especially looking forward to seeing Snakeships, Beatenberg, Albert Frost and The Brother Moves on.

Their advice for first-timers 1. Prepare for dust. 2. Be comfortable and warm in the evening. 3. Plan out what acts you would like to see. 4. Stay hydrated. 5. Find yourself around a fire, always interesting characters. The Muffinz when Karabo Moeketsi, second from the right, was still their bassist.

Indie–spice, happy vibrations, dust and a vet jol with Jerry and the Bandits their hearts that have a mind of their own. Chaos erupts. “Lie about how the stars don’t fall” – you can make up stories and lies but at the end of the day it was your heart’s choice and you will accept its fate.

Marita Herselman @MaritaHerselman

It tastes like soft caramel toffee, it feels like worn-in leather and smells like good coffee first thing in the morning. This is how the lively trio, Jerard Quaintmere, Kirstin Walters and Jason Chadinha of Jerry and The Bandits describe their sound. They are currently working towards recording their first full–length album. Last year they played at OppiKoppi 22: For the lovely young taken to THE UNSEA! on the Skellum Stage and at this year’s Oppi we’ll be dancing to their happy vibrations at the James Phillips Stage. Wapad talked to them via e-mail about their indie-spice, the recording of “Hearts Run Wild” which is yet to be released, lessons learned, and OppiKoppi–nostalgia. I hear you’ve coined the tagline “indie with a bit of spice”. If you were

spices, who would be what and why? Jerry – oregano because he loves pizza; Kirstin – coriander because she’s unique, yet still very familiar; Jason – thyme because he’s always on time ;). And all together they make the perfect spice to almost anything! You’ve been in studio recording your new song “Hearts Run Wild”. Elaborate on the song.

Super excited about this one! The song has two meanings to it: our “hearts run wild” because they have a tendency to do their own thing and the second meaning is that the way we run our hearts is reckless. People will always try and bring you down and those people are metaphors for the ‘wolves’ in the song. The song starts with a warning that the ‘wolves’ are coming, but no one is listening because they’re all following

What are the things you want people to think of when they hear the name “Jerry and the Bandits”? We want people to think of feelgood music, music that makes them feel something real and meaningful. Our latest EP, Fiction In Folktale, has a photo of our three pairs of shoes on it, we want people to walk with us in our shoes and to create their own meaning through our songs. What is the biggest lesson about the music industry you have learned in your time as a band? To be patient and to never ever EVER give up (even in the beginning stages when you’re literally playing to just four people in the audience, all four being your family members who drove with you to the show), the hard work

eventually starts paying off and all the crappy times become so worth it. What is the most memorable OppiKoppi you have attended and why? Definitely last year, we had the most amazing crowd that made us play even harder. We had a big campsite with some of our best friends and Kirstin decorated it with lanterns, banners and fairy lights. Jerry went around Oppi with a bottle of cheap Tequila and handed out sips to anyone he walked past. There was a guy snoring so loudly in the campsite next to us that it felt like he was in our tent. The dust cough and dust tan post–Oppi definitely makes it even more memorable. Aaah good times! Catch them at the place of “great music”, “dust”, “drunk people” and a “vet jol”, four things they associate with OppiKoppi, next to you in the crowd while the likes of Bongeziwe Mabandla, Nomadic Orchestra, Medicine Boy and Josh Kempen perform.

Oorleef jou OppiKoppi-Oktober Linzetta Calitz @LinzettaC

Ten minste soortvan. Jou kaartjie my vriend – onthou jou kaartjie. Kies jou klere volgens jou algemene gewoontes.

Probeer semi–skoon wees – wet wipes is jou maatjie. Vat ’n flits!

Verkieslik meer as 500ml.

Nuwe maatjies – jou bure is jou vriende. Water water water – vriende, jy gaan water mis. Of dit nou jou dors les, jou toelaat om jou tande te borsel, of selfs jou hande af te spoel, dié vloeistof is amper nodiger as ’n drankie. Kos a.k.a snacks – van tuna tot chips tot buns, vertou my, jy gaan jou middernag snacks waardeer.

Selfone – dink mooi voor jy jou nuwe Huawei saamvat. Oppi is ongelukkig nie ’n misdaadvryesone nie. Vreemdelinge doen snaakse dinge. Maak seker jy vind jou vreemdelinge se dinge snaaks. Laastens, as iemand “Oppi” skree, skree “Koppi” terug – dit mag dalk op ’n stadium te veel vir jou raak, but don’t leave a brother or sister hanging.

‘Treading the fine line between calm and chaos’ with Medicine Boy Marita Herselman @MaritaHerselman

Lucy Kruger and André Leo will be festival hopping between OppiKoppi and Rocking The Daisies and bands this year. The duo from Medicine Boy, who are also band members in Lucy & The Lost Boys, will have to leave Northam Thursday after their 20:00 set to play at Daisies Friday afternoon.

In 2016 both groups gigged in Northam. This year however, Medicine Boy is amped to play during the evening as they played “on a smaller stage just before sunset” the previous year. The violinist Hezron Chetty will accompany them to Oppi again this year. They have recently been spending a lot of time in studio. “We have finished tracking about 85% of the new album. (We) still need to do a few extras here and there but the heart of it is in place.” With this album they have crammed in a lot more work in a

shorter period of time than with their previous full-length album, Kinda Like Electricity (KLE). “It got pretty intense towards the end (of recording KLE) so with this one we decided to book two weeks in the studio & get it all done. We did a lot more preparation & preproduction this time around so the flow in studio was great.” They describe their musical journey as “organic” – “every album is a document of where we were at that point”. Although they do not constrain their albums with certain themes and sounds, they have excluded some songs from the new

album when they felt they touched on it with KLE. Medicine Boy elaborated on how their sound has changed and developed. “There’s an almost naïve quality to More Knives, with its simple drum loops & drones that we really love. KLE has an introverted quality about it. It is a very personal album and deals with a lot of things (we) think people can relate to.” They have had two European tours and are currently working on relocating there “for a few years”. And how does the South African audience compare to the one overseas? “Over there the first band

does not have to wait until 22:00 to play.” Medicine Boy says they “wanted to have some fun with this whole genre thing” and “love treading that fine line between calm and chaos”, so they called their mysterious and haunting sound “dream noise”. These jugglers of calm and chaos associate OppiKoppi with dust, borat costumes, Willy Mason’s set a few years back and impressive sound. “Don’t panic,” is their advice for first-time festival-goers of OppiKoppi.

Groeipyne of bloot pyne?

He is also an alumni of the North-West University School for Communication Studies. We have all had some sketchy distant relative who shared some post about how Facebook is going to steal all your information if you don’t immediately share/like/comment/ broadcast this message. This specific case study might only be a nuisance, but it is indicative of a larger issue in society: the dissemination of fake information online. A poll conducted in December and reported on by The Washington Post showed that 52% of Republicans believed that Trump won the popular vote during the 2016 US election (he lost by nearly three million votes). Another credible recent poll indicated that 67% of Trump backers said unemployment increased under President Barack Obama (despite it decreasing from 7.8 percent to 4.6 percent). During the campaign, another poll found that a third of Trump supporters believed Hillary Clinton has ties with the devil. Recently in South Africa, the country fell victim to fake news and propaganda spread by Bell Pottinger, which was commissioned by the Gupta-owned business, Oakbay Investments. We live in what has been labelled the “post-truth era,” where even the most unbelievable fallacies and lies find a receptive audience. But it’s important, perhaps more than ever, to remember that truth is not an abstract and unknowable concept. There is such a thing as objective reality. Separating fact from fiction can be done. It’s one of the core functions of journalism. In recent years, this has given way to what some observers have called “a new kind of journalism,” commonly known as fact-checking. Of course, there is nothing new about checking information to make sure it is correct. Journalists have done it for decades with their own work. Neither is it new for journalists to truth-test the pronouncements of politicians. But never has there been so much concerted effort brought to this endeavor. In the US established nonpartisan groups including FactCheck. org, PolitiFact, and the Washington Post’s Fact Checker are dedicated to fact-checking public claims and statements by politicians and lobby groups. It is a trend that has spread globally, with Africa Check performing a similar service in South Africa. The value of credible fact-checking outlets, even if they are not infallible, is greatly magnified by the advent of fake news. When a sizable share of

the population believes things that are demonstrably untrue, that presents an existential crisis in any democracy. It is time for an intervention, conducted by citizens armed with truthful information and schooled in how to make discerning judgments about the news they consume, before they pass it on. Getting the public to stop believing untrue things, especially in the hyperdishonest era of Donald Trump and Jacob Zuma, is going to take more than a handful of news operations devoted to fact-checking. Many experimental studies have shown that people prove surprisingly resistant to new information that cuts against their political views and may cling even more tightly to false beliefs after reading a correction.

It is therefore important to see factchecking for what it is: a flashlight, not a magic wand. Fact-checkers are journalistic reformers whose unifying mission has not been to clean up politics–seen as obviously futile and possibly inappropriate–but rather to change journalism. Politicians and other people with their own interests to advance are never going to become paragons of honesty. But journalists can hold them accountable for the falsehoods they concoct, and empower the public with the truth. What is the role of media if not to press for some semblance of reality amid the smoke and mirrors? After that, it’s up to the people in this democracy to decide whether or not truth matters.

Team SA laat paaltjies kantel in Sri Lanka

Patria vier hul sewende koshuisrugby titel.

Koshuis-eerstes: Patria wen 7de titel Kristien Kruger @Kris10Kruger

C

Daarna was
