Biblioteek opgraderings: Ferdi’s sluit tydelik deure Dennis Delport @Dennisdelport

S

10 Things not to be nostalgic about Linzetta Calitz @LinzettaC

I

t was the best of times it was the worst of times… some times you just shouldn’t get nostalgic about. You see, nostalgia works best when something actually happened. Wishing something happened doesn’t count. This might even be the last 10 things typed from these hands. I don’t know about you, but to the sound of Natasha Beddingfield’s Unwritten, this is legit nostalgia from my side. But anyway… Remember that time we ALL voted in the SRC election? Oh wait… But guys, seriously though. Why don’t people vote? Technical difficulties? Apathetic tendencies? Even if you give it a “no vote” just give it a vote. You can do this. These people are supposed to represent you. Also, my bad. It’s mos the SCC (Student Campus Council) now. Nothing major. A committee by any other

1

abbreviation would perform the same seemingly invisible tasks. May the council be ever in our favour. I’ll bet my electricity money the institutional personnel are feeling pretty nostalgic about the term “campus”. You haven’t heard? Pretty soon we might be known as the Potchefstroom “site

of delivery” and not campus. You know, transformation and unity and such. And oh. my. gosh. Do you remember that week in August when everyone had the flu? Like, wasn’t that the best. time. ever?! Never, in my life, have I gone through so many SS napkins

in one week. Hahaha. Good times. *pleads with the angel of flu-death* Alright, 9 August also deserves some legit nostalgia. Things have happened, are happening and still need to happen for women. If your knowledge level isn’t where it’s supposed to be, Google is your friend. Luckily Google doesn’t judge your questions, I hope… Ah, and that time you friended a cutie on Facebook and you had no mutual friends. So it didn’t turn out too bad, but I’d rather not reminisce about my excellent stalker skills in public. New friendships are a thing to be embraced – with both arms. All the mistakes you’ve made in Mystics (or anywhere for that matter)? Nothing you should be spending too much time on. Wait, who am I kidding? If you can’t be nostalgic about mistakes, what and who even are you? We all have them. Feel free to share your story with a new friend. And how could we forget that time we all had a nice, stimulating, ground breaking,

open discussion about something real controversial. You guys remember? No one even lost their temper. And no racial slurs! Golly, what a day. We should do it again sometime. Wait, wait, wait. I’ve got it! That time we all supported the intercampus sport day! Boy was THAT one to remember. All three campuses together, chillin’, making new friends. Can’t wait for the next one. Might even have a few Netflix dates lined up, you never know. So plagiarism… Apparently it doesn’t just happen to undergrads. In case you haven’t heard, some top level academics probably gave AGLA a skip – don’t lie, you’ve been there. You see, Harvard Referencing really isn’t a walk on the Bult. We’ve got qualified people to prove it.

Passie belangriker as geld as dit by studies kom Denise Robertson @Denisemybru

Dié feit is deur Marelize van der Merwe, ’n sielkundige by Studentevoorligtingsdienste, bevestig.

Voorhuis Ham revised JJ Denton @dentojj The freshness of ingredients at the Voorhuis has been called into question by a student who was served ham that was allegedly green around the edges. Rhee-Ann Maaries, a first year law student at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus (NWU-Puk), approached Wapad in June regarding an incident she had at the Voorhuis dining hall. Maaries was unhappy with her order when she noted a “green colour” around the edges of the ham on a sandwich she ordered. “I bought breakfast two days in a row and had to throw away my food on both occasions due to the bad taste.” Maaries said she knew for a fact that ham was not supposed to look like that. She intends to stop buying breakfast at the Voorhuis in the future to avoid

disappointment. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) who is the public health agency of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) notes the following on their website, “Change in colour alone does not mean a product is spoiled. Colour changes are normal for fresh product. If in addition to the colour change the meat has an off odour, is sticky or slimy it should not be used.” Opinions were asked of Potchefstroom locals ranging from students to butchers regarding the photo in question. The consensus was that when you buy food you expect the best possible freshness for your money but that the discolouration of ham is not rare and it can still be consumed. Ester Botha, head of department: catering services, said they consider any complaints regarding the quality of food in a serious manner, but denies that the ham in question was past its expiration date. “The ham is simply more heated on the

edges than it is in the central area”. The Voorhuis follows a First In First Out (FIFO) policy. They also get temperature readings from the storage rooms twice a day for record purposes. All in an attempt to ensure the freshness of their food. According to Botha “the quality of stock gets evaluated on a daily basis and products that do not get used within a 24 hour period is then frozen. Once a product does not satisfy our high-quality standards it immediately gets thrown away.” Students can make use of the complaints box in the various dining halls or report a problem directly to management. Botha emphasised that they encourage students to immediately report any complaints to the management of the dining halls to ensure a consistent high-quality service. Action is taken immediately after a complaint has been received.

SABPP comes to Potchefstroom campus Linzetta Calitz @LinzettaC

The South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) launched its very first student chapter at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus (NWU-Puk). SABPP COO, Xolani Mawande, spoke about the nature and role of the board during an information session held in March. He also highlighted its numerous benefits for students.

The SABPP provides students with the chance to network with Human Resources (HR) students from other universities and also with the growing number of HR professionals. These networking opportunities give students the necessary insight they need to plan and set goals for their future. According to Jaco Barnard, a member of the communication and marketing part of the SABPP at the NWU-Puk, the evening of 29 May was an exciting one for everyone. The NWU-Puk’s first ever student committee was elected to represent the university, and to

further the interests of the students. “The SABPP plays an important role in ensuring that tertiary students are fully prepared for a working environment in the HR field,” said Barnard. Since January 2015, the SABPP has actively begun creating awareness and launching student chapters at universities and colleges around South Africa. Each of the newly registered SABPP students received their member certificates, handed to them by SABPP CEO, Marius Meyer, and prof Lené Jorgensen from the School of Human Resource Management.

Puk Forum discusses de/colonisation Dennis Delport @Dennisdelport

P

uk Forum recently held a conference where de/ colonisation was discussed. The discussion inevitably had a few controversial moments. Speakers who attended the 2 August event included prof Nico Koopman, Vice-Rector for Social Impact, Transformation and Staff at the University of Stellenbosch, prof Hein Willemse, Academic, literary critic, activist and author connected to the University of Pretoria, dr Attie van Niekerk, expert in the field of Theology and Missiology and prof André Duvenhage, expert in the field of political sciences, both from the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus. In short these experts had the following to say: According to Koopman the idea of a new all African university is a good strategy and the idea excites him. “We can win so much with this concept. This is a university that will function in glocality. In other words context where the global and the

local are interwoven. There is more interaction.” He said by saying we want to be an African university doesn’t mean we want to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. “Secondly we want to say that we want to face the challenges of our continent as an African university.” Willemse said colonialism is usually seen as an African problem and that is a problem in itself. He also said “collegiality deals with the notion of centre and margin”. He summarised decolonisation with the following question: “Does decolonization mean that we need to return to the notion of a precolonial state? Because that fosters all sorts of ideas of authenticity.” Van Niekerk discussed colonialism and mortality while Duvenhage said the theme has a wide field. He said it is also politically sensitive as we saw with the whole Helen Zille dilemma. In his presentation he looked at the kinds of politics, imperialism and colonialism and also placed it in the South African context. After the discussion, there was an intense debate about the subject. A member of the crowd asked why there were only men on the panel and “more

specifically two white men”. Another member of the crowd reiterated and pointed out that the number of women (or lack thereof) on the panel “was shocking”. Someone also said the university must overcome its fear of holding open discussions. Another member of the crowd said the disaster waiting is listening to “youngsters like this”

talking about politics and colonisation. The woman who mentioned the lack of women raised her hand during the previously mentioned speaker’s turn, was ignored, and resorted to speaking anyway. He said she should keep quiet because he respected her while she was speaking. He also said this was the problem in our country – the lack of respect for the elderly.

The lack of women on the panel was discussed further and a women mentioned that she felt staff were being oppressed on campus. Prof Fika Janse van Rensburg discussed this and suggested they sit around a table and discuss the issue, because he doesn’t like his staff feeling this way.

Eleven academics at the NorthWest University (NWU) are under investigation for plagiarising the work of other academics and organizations in their research articles. A whistle blower close to the student body reported the matter to the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It is believed that most of the academics involved work in the faculty of natural- and agricultural sciences and that some of them hold professorships and doctorates. The most senior academic accused in the scandal occupies a senior management position at the Mafikeng campus. It has previously been reported by various news outlets that these academics make out part of both the Mafikeng and Potchefstroom campuses, but Louis Jacobs, director: corporate communication and stakeholder relations of the NWU, said otherwise. According to Jacobs “all eleven are connected to the Mafikeng campus”. Jacobs said the matter is being investigated. “The university takes plagiarism very seriously and therefore the investigation will take some time.” He said the necessary disciplinary steps will be taken against those involved after a conclusion has been made

in the investigation. The DHET grants a fee of R 120 000 to universities for each research article published in journals or books. An example of the allegedly plagiarised work is from an employers’ handbook on managing HIV/Aids in the workplace published in 2003 by the Thailand Business Coalition, Employers’ Confederation of Thailand and the International Labour Office. The handbook states the following: “Providing workplace care and support helps to ensure that employees with HIV/Aids remain healthy and productive at work.” “In addition, care and support programs can boost workforce morale by showing that the company is truly concerned about the health and wellbeing of its employees.” The study under investigation (coauthored by a senior NWU academic and published in 2013) dealt with “challenges HIV/Aids poses on the nursing workforce in rural health settings in Vhembe district, Limpopo province, South Africa”. A quote present in the study, without being credited to the 2003 handbook, reads as follows: “Providing workplace care and support helps to ensure that employees with HIV/Aids remain healthy and productive at work. Care and support programs can boost workplace morale by showing that the organization is truly concerned about the health and well-being of its employees.”

A brief history of Women’s day: stronger together Marné Coetzee @marnhey_

In the 23 years since the very first National Women’s Day was celebrated, South African women have achieved more than what was once considered possible. This day, celebrated annually on 9 August, does not only empower women but also draws attention to issues women still face today. National Women’s Day commemorates the 1956 march where more than 20 000 black women marched to the Union Buildings to petition against pass laws. The march proved its importance since it was one of the first uproars

from women in South Africa who refused to be silenced.

Each year brings the country a step closer to equality between men and

women. Here is a brief list of what South African women have achieved in the last decades: • Black women stood up against apartheid laws. • Marriage laws, which gave men power over their wives, have been lifted. • Equality in the workplace as well as equal wages are being enforced. • More education for women and girls. • Women-owned companies and properties have increased. • Representation of women in parliament has increased from 2.7 % before 1994 to 48 % presently. • Laws against domestic violence, especially against women, have been enforced.

@CombrinkColette

The time of year has arrived to vote for your Student Campus Council (SCC) for 2017/18. This is the opportunity for you, as student, to choose who you want to represent yourself for approximately the next twelve months. An important decision solely in your hands. In 2015 only 33.68 % of students on the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus (NWU-Puk) voted for the SRC (Student Representative Council). In 2016, however, this number rose to

Fame ontdek wêrelde in Potch Chané Jonker @Chanejonk

F

Vervolgens is NWU-Puk studente, personeellede én alumni by die finale produksie betrokke.

Vervolgens is NWU-Puk studente, personeellede én alumni by die finale produksie betrokke.

Dunkirk – not just another war film

T

his is not just another war movie, as it brings the other side of war into perspective. The film Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan, was released in South African theatres on 28 July. There occurs no blood splatter, only men and their fight for survival holding on to every bit of hope they have left.

Overwhelming sounds of bombs and aeroplanes make you feel as if you are part of the war. You will be pleasantly knocked out of your seat with the greatness of this film. Dunkirk is based on a true story where 4 00 000 allied soldiers are trapped on Dunkirk and surrounded by the German Nazis.

PHOTO: SCREEN RANT

Evacuation is needed, and fast too. Germany can bomb them all at any minute. No large boats can reach the beach for it is too shallow for them to enter, thus operation Dynamo starts. The film is captured into three parts of war. Air (Tom Hardy), land (Fionn Whithead, Harry Styles) and

sea (Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance). The movie does not have a lot of dialect but the truth and rawness of war is clear when looking at the amazing scenes. Nolan explained in an interview with Fox 5 DC “I wanted it to be as intense as possible, and therefore as lean, stripped down and short

as possible”. Overwhelming sounds of bombs and aeroplanes make you feel as if you are part of the war, trying to escape with the rest of the soldiers, therefore experiencing the feelings of fear and tremble. War has been stereotyped for so long as a gruesome situation with guns, blood and anger, that we forget that there is real men with

families involved. This movie will open your eyes about what war really is about and how there are major losses faced with when in war. Dunkirk definitely broke the stereotype above and I will recommend this movie to all.

Feel-good morning songs Heinz Schoeman-Struwig @inHeinzsight

07:30 classes should be illegal but unfortunately aren’t (although campus should consider a petition…). The ultimate eclectic playlist is thus on offer – featuring new and old sounds but overall has upbeat synths and plummet-drops. Hopefully you’ll be hair brush (or toothbrush) in-hand jamming in front of the mirror in no time. ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ by Sigrid Starting slow (because it’s your third snooze) Sigrid sounds calm and determined. By the time your kettle is cooking, the chorus is blaring and Sigrid’s raspy notes are welcoming you to the morning bliss because nothing will kill your vibe today. ‘New Rules’ by Dua Lipa Dua Lipa is slowly but surely taking over the pop scene, so she should be a welcome addition to your morning. You’ll be creating rules for your current or future partner whilst shaking your hips for the water to get warm (with or without flashbacks from last night in Bourbans). ‘Wearing Nothing’ by Dagny You’re getting out of the shower, so singing “When I’m with you I feel like wearing nothing at all” is totally relevant. Fin. ‘Dynamite’ by Nause A piano-beat that’ll spin in your head for the rest of your day – lyrics to inspire you to take on the world and a drop that might make you drop with a “boom, boom, boom” trying to fit into your skinny jeans. ‘Kamikaze’ by MØ A hook that’ll never leave your brain “Take me to the party /

Kami-Kamikaze” will stick with you through first period. Check out the screenshots above for more jams for the ultimate day.

Spring into fashion Bianca Stevens @bee_the_bibi

S

pring is on its way and this means it is a new season of trends. But do not be alarmed – change is there but not a lot of it. Simplicity is key and one bold accessory including your makeup look can make you look stylish and confident. No one has the time for a full face of makeup every day. So keep it simple, a bold red lip and minimal eye makeup paired with your natural hair texture will do the trick. Pro tip: a little bit of salty water can take your hair game to a whole new level. Our prayers have been answered and flower crowns are still a thing in 2017. But that’s not all, Rodart took lace bows onto the runway and it works. Time to get your DIY on and make your own stylish accessories. Embracing your own style is what is all about, no arguing there but a few essentials making the runway this springs is mom jeans, midi skirts and button-down shirts with funky

Self-care 101: spoil yourself Megan Olivier @Meganolivier9

Feeling a bit blue? Sometimes it’s important to take care of yourself, even if you have 50 tests and assignments looming ahead of you. Here are a few quick and easy tips to take care of yourself and feel better: • Meditation is a great way to look after yourself and keep stress at bay. There are a few free apps that can help you, like The Mindfulness App, Headspace and buddhify. • Four words: watch cute animal videos. Cats, dogs, llamas, goats, anything. It’s guaranteed to make you feel better. • Exercise helps clear your mind and makes your body feel great. And if you’re the kind of person who hates physical activity, you

can always try yoga, it’s more relaxing and less taxing. • Some people feel better if they do some work, so getting in front of your computer and working on assignments or planning your week could make you feel better and stress less.

• Washing your hair, or actually just taking a shower, makes you feel like a new person. Get some nice scented shower gel or hair treatment and wash away your worries. • Speak to someone who cares about you, be it your parents, grandmother, best friend or neighbour. Spending

time with loved ones is good for you and may help you work through your problems. • Face it, we all have our guiltypleasure reality shows we love to hate. So stream some Jersey Shore, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, House Hunters or even Say Yes To The Dress. • Go offline for a while. Leave those irritating groups and fake Instagram posts behind and just breathe. • Host a dance party for one, featuring your hairbrush. Or toothbrush. Invite the jammiest of pop songs and sing your heart out. • Get enough sleep. It’s difficult to concentrate if you’re daydreaming about taking a nap, so get your 8 hours of sleep and get to work feeling refreshed.

Alternatiewe Vrydagaandplanne – Indiese kookkuns Linzetta Calitz @LinzettaC

10 Augustus 2017

gesellig saam geniet is.

Find your style: whether you’re stealing looks from a Markhams mannequin, Pinterest, or something cool you saw in Lovers’ Lane – do something that makes you feel good and suits your needs. If you’re on a tight budget there’s no shame in getting shirts at Mr Price. If you want to invest in something like a jacket wait for a sale at Woolworths perhaps. Other things to keep in mind is interchangeability. Neutrals are in fashion and you can never have enough white T-shirts. For affordability find something that can go with what you have. Try collect a couple of staple pants, short and long depending on your preference and the season. Try to over time collect a black jean, blue jean, stone chino, black formal pants and the rest is up to you. Something often seen on campus are chinos or jeans with an elastic at the bottom making it suitable to wear open shoes with long pants. If not, roll up the bottom of your pants once or twice – this is really in fashion at the moment. Know your fashion rules. Although these are debatable – it can generally be agreed that wearing PT-broekies and a Parka is a no-no. But that’s eventually up to you. Also try to color coordinate, i.e. don’t wear green and red together (unless you want to embody Christmas – then go for it). Snap your look with a Wapad in and tag us on Instagram – we might feature you as a campus #FashionInspiration.

Redaksioneel

E

n so kom my pad met Wapad tot ʼn einde – as redakteur wel. Dis moeilik om te dink die ding waarvoor ek die hardste in my universiteit loopbaan gewerk het, het ek beklee, en net so is dit verby. Ek sal dit opsom as ’n jaar se slaaplose aande. Ek was nie die beste redakteur wanneer dit kom by taal of skryf nie.

Sy is my rots. My

Wapad

Ek was redakteur, bemarking, finansies, uitlegredakteur, ens. Linzetta was nuusredakteur, adjunkredakteur, sportredakteur, redakteur-redakteur. Dankie, dankie, dankie.

Waar is my pad nou? Linzetta Calitz @LinzettaC

The time has come To say fair’s fair To pay the rent To pay our share

S

Ek los ’n stuk van my hier. ’n Moerse stuk.

Springbok-vrouesewesspan kom wys hul staal in Potchefstroom Kristien Kruger @Kris10Kruger

Beloved coach Badenhorst speaking to her team during a game.

NWU netball greets Badenhorst Dennis Delport @Dennisdelport

T

he North-West University Potchefstoom campus’s (NWU-Puk) netball coach, Dorette Badenhorst, will no longer be committed to the university as she decided to take her career in a new and exciting direction. Badenhorst has been the head netball coach since 2012 with an

era of unprecedented success for the university. She will now be joining Egalite Promotions as one of their directors. There she will be hosting courses and clinics in collaboration with Sun City. “It has been a wonderful ride and an unbelievable experience,” said Badenhorst. She will remain her players’ biggest fan and wishes them well for the future. “They must give their utmost best and keep doing

what they do best.” Badenhorst said she and the NWU could not agree on a new contract for her to stay on as head coach of the women’s netball team. She didn’t want to commit to the same terms as her previous contract. Heléne Botha, manager of women’s sport at the NWU said she has known Badenhorst for many years. “I have always held her in the highest regard. She is an unbelievable coach, an exceptional

netball strategist and an amazing human being. In the six years that she was our head coach we won the Varsity Netball tournament back-to-back and we have always finished amongst the top three in the annual USSA tournament, including winning it in 2017. We are sad that she is leaving, but we are also excited and happy with her for what her future holds.” During her tenure, the NWU produced numerous national

netball players including Protea stars Nadia Uys, Elsunet du Plessis, Renske Scholtz, Sigi Burger and Kifiloe Tsotetsi. “Dorette took the NWU’s netball club to unprecedented heights and we saw her grow with the club. We worked hard to obtain her services and it paid more dividends than we could ever have hoped for,” said Botha. “We knew she could do it and we want to say thank you very much.”

Underdogs at the top of the log with yet another win Dennis Delport @Dennisdelport

This year’s varsity football underdogs, the North-West University Mafikeng campus (NWU), clinched yet another crucial win against the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) to reach the top of the log. Just seven minutes into the

match, the NWU drew first blood with striker Mogomotsi Molefe finding the back of the net with a scorching right sweep. The ever present Cameron Chweu doubled their lead in the last three minutes before halftime. The Clever Boys, as the Wits team is more commonly known, got an early glimmer of hope when the referee awarded them a penalty. The team’s Luke Pereira converted it

successfully and adjusted the score to 2 – 1 in the NWU’s favour. The NWU’s Wendelle Martin was next in line to make Wits’ keeper collect the ball in his net when he scored a volley. Next in the scoring line was team captain, Sandile Mbatha, who made his presence felt by rounding the keeper to score the NWU’s fourth goal of the match. “As a team we are playing the kind of football that our fans want us to

play,” said Molefe. “These are the people that have believed in us when at times it seemed bleak. I am just glad they came out in their numbers to see us honour them.” Molefe also deservedly won the man of the match award. The Samsung best shot went to Wendelle Martin. Clinching their maiden victory in an away game against University of Fort Hare, and their second win against Wits, has propelled them to

the top of the fixture log. The NWU have placed themselves in the ideal position to become one of the tournament’s formidable teams in this season’s Varsity Football tournament. The NWU’s next match will be on the evening of 10 August against the University of Pretoria (Tuks) at the Mafikeng stadium.

Tafeltennis – Patria en Lavaria gekroon as koshuisligawenners Kristien Kruger @Kris10Kruger
