Welcome... There is one simple question you can ask someone that will reveal a great deal about the place where they live: "Are you proud of your town?" Most responses will probably be a shrug of indifference (which is probably as good as a 'no'), or an enthusiastic 'yes', followed by one or more reasons as to why. This form of localised patriotism bares similarities to pride on a national level, but the former would seem to be harder for a given locality to achieve. By default, most people would support their national sporting team, for example, but on a local level – and in the football world at least – loyalties can stretch across county boundaries. So when we find proud residents, it's a sure sign there will be more among their neighbours and a strong indication there is something good happening at the core of that community. It comes as little surprise to me that the level of civic pride among Wanstead's population is high – dare I say at a level on par with the England team in the Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham.

Puzzles and competitions

Every year at the Wanstead Festival I hear – and overhear – comments, anecdotes and compliments that reveal sincere gratification for all that Wanstead has to offer. Of course, the festival comes midway through the annual art trail and at the end of a week of Wanstead Fringe activities, so community pride is very much at the forefront of people's minds. But while September may be a busy month for Wanstead's social scene, it is perhaps better described as the top tier of the cake that is Wanstead's year-round community calendar. And with so much to offer, and with so many committed to adding new layers, this is one instance where you can indeed have your cake and eat it.

Every month

But don't take my word for it. I leave you with a quote from one of the art trail's many love letters to Wanstead (see pages 16-17): "I was born in Wanstead Hospital 61 years ago and love living here. It has everything… I will never leave Wanstead!" Lee Marquis, Editor

Yarn bombing during last month's art trail

Wanstead's sixth art trail took place last month, displaying work by more than 150 artists at about 70 venues. Visual creations this year included puppet making, furniture and lighting design, sculpture, pottery, mosaic and textile art. The trail organiser,

Art Group Wanstead, also encouraged local residents to create work themselves – in their front gardens for the HomeFront competition or on the High Street with yarn bombing, which was popular with knitting groups, individuals and children alike.

Wanstead Fringe and Festival: Free samba drumming community comes together workshops in Aldersbrook

Last month's series of communityorganised Wanstead Fringe activities and the Wanstead Festival – run by Vision Redbridge Culture and Leisure – have been hailed a success by residents, councillors and local businesses. "There's something for everyone at the

Wanstead Festival, whether you like music, sport or even… a dog show. But I think one of the main reasons that it continues to be popular is because it helps bring the local community together and instil civic pride," said Councillor Dev Sharma.

The Wanstead United Reformed Church will be hosting a concert of West Gallery music in aid of church funds next month. In the late 1980s, West Gallery music – the sacred music performed in parish churches from 1700 to around 1850 – experienced a revival and is now sung by

several 'quires' (choirs). The London Gallery Quire, which formed in February 1997, will perform their lively repertoire at the Nightingale Lane church on 7 November from 7.30pm. Tickets will be available at the church from 26 October (adults: £7.50; concessions £5).

Loved-up Community artist Sam Cowan reflects on last month's 'Love-up' Wanstead interactive mapping project

A

s you may have read in last month's issue, the aim of the 'Love-up' project was to see how much our positive actions and interactions with each other could change the map of Wanstead during the 16 days of the art trail. The map in question was a giant hand-painted mural on the walls of the pop-up shop depicting the area. The positive actions we were inviting people to do were to plant seeds, pick up litter, be nice to strangers and write love letters (letters of appreciation and gratitude) to favourite local heros, businesses and landmarks. The way the actions were marked on the map was for each person who had 'loved-up' Wanstead to create a round badge with their own wording or illustration in the middle to depict what had been done. Each badge was attached to the map in the spot that the 'love-up' action had occurred. In this way, we were mapping positive change as they happened. I will never know the stories behind all the badges, nor will I know how the people who received a love letter felt or how the people who benefitted from an act of kindness from a stranger reacted. This was a project whose ripple effects cannot be quantified. My heart was warmed many times when I read love letters that were left behind in the shop (these tended to be letters for Wanstead in general, rather than letters aimed at a recipient). I was very touched by the badge tacked onto the map which read: 'hugged the Big Issue seller because she looked sad'. Although the art trail may be over, please carry on 'loving-up' Wanstead by continuing to support the Big Issue seller, offering hugs and compassion to those who may need it (regardless of whether you have met them before or not) and writing love letters to the people and places in Wanstead that make a difference to your life. It is the cumulative effects of the little things that we do that make Wanstead a lovely place. For more information on last month's art trail, visit artgroupwanstead.com

Pb h io ot o graphy g r a p h y In the seventh of a series of articles by members of the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society, Chun Wah Ng explains the similarities between sports and street photography

M

© Chun Wah Ng

y journey into photography started when I bought my first film camera in Hong Kong. I bought a Minolta X-300 in 1987 and it took me a while to learn how to use it. It was a basic camera; it didn't have autofocus, LCD screen, motor drive, built-in flash or a memory card. All you had to do was load it with a 35mm film and start taking your 36 shots. You then had to develop your film before you could look at your pictures. These days, I use a Canon 70D to take most of my photographs. I've been taking a lot of sports photography this year. In August, I was the official photographer for the London Inline Speed Skating marathon, held in the Olympic Park in Stratford. To be a good sports photographer, you need to know the sport. Once the race starts, the pressure is on you to take all the required shots. You don't get a second chance in a race. I'm an amateur photographer and a member of the London Skater Speed Team – if you want to be involved in sports photography, it's best to be a member of a sports club or have contacts with them. I have also had the privilege of taking some shots of the London Lions basketball team in the Copper Box arena. The atmosphere was great and it was a challenge to take good action shots. When I'm not shooting action, I love to take my camera and walk the streets of London. Street photography is like sports photography in the sense that you don't know what will happen next. You have to be ready to take a shot when the moment happens. I joined the Woodford and Wanstead Photographic Society to improve on the creative aspect of my photography. There are a lot of talented people in the club and they are very willing to help new members. Since joining the society, I've started printing my own photographs and entering competitions. Hopefully one day, I may even win one… I can dream.

Weathering the Blitz In the second of a series of articles marking the 75th anniversary of the start of the Blitz, local weather enthusiast Scott Whitehead offers a meteorological-based review of events in October and November 1940

A

Many who weren't appointed as wardens learnt, through local authority training, to deal with incendiary bombs – airborne missiles dropped by the Luftwaffe that could easily pierce slate roofs and set fires below. Stirrup pumps could be bought and, through a family effort, fires could be extinguished or controlled until the arrival of the fire brigade. The intensity of the night raids that brought so much destruction in September continued throughout October. The neighbouring borough of Woodford bore the brunt of the bombing but Wanstead, being so close to anti-aircraft guns sited on Wanstead Flats, continued to be hit. On 11 October, six high-explosive bombs fell on Wanstead Park, one damaging the Temple. Two days later, high-explosive bombs fell on land close to the City of London Cemetery on Aldersbrook Road, leaving six craters. On 14 October, three people were killed when another bomb landed in Woodlands Avenue on the Aldersbrook estate, while incendiaries caused many small fires in properties on Elmcroft Avenue. By the end of October, the attacks started to be scaled back. Bad weather at the start of November coincided with a six-day pause in bombing incidents. It was a very cyclonic month that probably hampered German air operations. Indeed, on 3 November, 40.8mm of rain was recorded at Greenwich – a daily record for November that remains to this day. Another six-day pause in the bombing happened after 16 November. When the Luftwaffe returned on Saturday 23 November, it was Wanstead that bore the brunt. At 4.12pm, as light was fading on a dull, dreary afternoon, high-explosive bombs

s Wanstead, Woodford and the rest of suburban London got over the initial shock of the start of the Blitz on 7 September 1940, people acted to keep life going as normally as possible.

Warden training on Wanstead Flats

caused fires at, and partly demolished, numbers 78 and 89 New Wanstead. A minute later, another bomb ruptured water and gas mains in Spratt Hall Road. At 4.30pm, a further high-explosive bomb fell in the High Street, killing four people. The raid ended at 5.16pm as a bomb fell in Fitzgerald Road, though this time there were no injuries. By now the weather was beginning to quieten down, though weeks of deep depressions with associated gales and heavy rain had taken their toll and many residents reported problems of Anderson bomb shelters being constantly flooded, but it was probably the design as much as the weather that was to blame. Some 171.6mm of rain was collected by month end in Greenwich – a record for this region that also remains to this day. As pressure built in the last few days of November, the first frosts of winter arrived, but the bombs returned. High-explosive devices fell in Woodford New Road and Bunces Lane on the 30 November, fracturing a water main. The author's inspiration for this article comes from the book It Happened Here by Stanley Tiquet, which is available for loan and purchase from libraries in Redbridge. lovely cricket As part of Black History Month celebrations, Colin Babb will be discussing the social impact of cricket on British Caribbean communities at a free event at Wanstead Library

I

This triumph was witnessed by the Trinidadian calypsonians Lord Kitchener and Lord Beginner, who also both arrived in Britain on the Windrush. While celebrating victory, Lord Kitchener was inspired to compose Victory Test Match, which began with the memorable first line: "Cricket, lovely cricket". For some Caribbean migrants who settled in Britain from the 1950s onwards, the performances of the West Indies cricket team symbolised progress and togetherness. West Indian victories against the England cricket team, especially on English soil, provided West Indians in Britain from across the region, and from a variety of social and ethnic backgrounds, with a common focus and a collective source of pride. My earliest cricket memories are located in one year, 1973. As a nine-year-old schoolboy of Caribbean descent living in England, I can still recall John Arlott's observant and humorous cricket commentary, and his gift for elegant, descriptive language delivered in a distinctive Hampshire burr. John Arlott commentated on the Sunday John Player League 40-overs competition between English county teams, which was transmitted live on BBC television. The first colour television to arrive in our family home in England was purchased to coincide with the 1973 West Indies tour. Therefore, we were able to invite our West Indian relatives and friends, Caribbean and British-born, to join us and view live coverage of the match. The common cause was to support West Indian cricket.

Photo used by kind permission from Alan Gilmour at twotriplefive

n 1948, a landmark event symbolised the beginning of large-scale post-war migration from the Caribbean to Britain. When the Empire Windrush ship sailed from Jamaica on 24 May, there were 492 passengers and six stowaways on board. Two years after the arrival of the Windrush and the emergence of a small Caribbean presence in Britain, the West Indies cricket team beat England for the first time on English soil at Lord's. The West Indies celebrate a wicket during their ICC Champions Trophy match against Pakistan at The Oval, June 2013

My book, They Gave the Crowd Plenty Fun, reflects on events that influenced the development of the social impact of cricket on British Caribbean communities from the arrival of the Windrush onwards. The book also thoughtfully explores factors that have challenged cricket's position as a social force for the current descendants of the Windrush generation. Contributors to They Gave the Crowd Plenty Fun include former West Indies cricketers Jimmy Adams, Basil Butcher, Lance Gibbs and Deryck Murray; former England cricketers Ebony Rainford-Brent, Gladstone Small and Alex Tudor; Harold 'Dickie' Bird, the former international cricket umpire and President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club; and Tony Cozier, the West Indian cricket journalist, author and broadcaster. During the event at Wanstead Library, I will talk about the book and reflect on my life as a second-generation West Indian boy in 1970s and 1980s Britain. There will also be 'plenty fun' with mystery prizes, quizzes, video clips and music. Colin will be discussing his book They Gave the Crowd Plenty Fun at Wanstead Library on 20 October from 7pm to 9pm. The event is free to attend but booking is required. Call 020 8708 7400

West Indies Cricket: An Evening with Colin Babb 7pm to 9pm

Colin Babb is author of They Gave The Crowd Plenty Fun: West Indian Cricket and its Relationship with the British-Resident Caribbean Diaspora They Gave The Crowd Plenty Fun is a lucid study of the impact of West Indian cricket on those of Caribbean birth and descent in Britain. It traces the history of the relationship between cricket and the Caribbean diaspora from the start of Caribbean mass immigration to Britain in the 1950s. Colin, with traces of humour, also reflects on his life as a second generation West Indian boy in 1970s/80s Britain.

History on tap Geologist and author Michael Howgate will be presenting the history of London's water supply at a Wanstead and Woodford U3A event next month. Here he offers an overview, from Roman baths to bottled water

P

rior to the Roman invasion, the local Britons who lived in the area we now know as London would have quenched their thirst by using the many springs feeding into the Rivers Fleet and Walbrook. The River Thames, with its muddy shores and saline water, was probably avoided, except where chalk springs bubbled up near the shoreline. With the coming of the Romans in 43 AD and the founding of Londinium on the site of the present City of London, all that changed. The Romans brought with them civilisation and that meant clean water for drinking and that great Roman institution, the public bath. A wooden aqueduct may have brought water from springs on the heights of Islington, but remains have also been found of Roman wells. We know that some of these wells were in use during Saxon and Norman times, but the next big innovation was in the early Middle Ages, when the first conduit was constructed to bring water from the Tyburn stream into free conduit heads in the City in a three-mile-long lead pipe or lead-lined trough. You could go there at certain times of the day to get water for drinking, washing, cooking or dressing your meat. As the population expanded, more and more conduits were needed, many to serve the numerous religious houses that sprang up around the City and others funded by City worthies. Lamb's Conduit and White's Conduit are examples. As the population expanded even more in the Elizabethan period, the need for fresh water became a pressing problem. The Hampstead Ponds were constructed as reservoirs and waterwheels were allowed to be built to provide the citizens of London with the diluted sewage that was Thames water. Then, in the time of James the First, an idea which had been gestating for some time was brought to fruition and the 'New River' – a forty-mile-long aqueduct – was constructed to bring fresh spring water from Amwell near Ware in Hertfordshire to the City of London. The water was fed from the

The New Gauge House where water leaves the River Lea at the start of the New River

reservoirs at Sadler's Wells to various locations. For a price, you could have a 'quill' inserted into the elm-wood pipe and be allowed to draw off water for a few hours a day. Such was the demand on the New River Company that the meagre supply from the spring was soon augmented by water taken from the River Lea. However, wells were still much used by the poorer sort and public wells were almost on every street corner. Unfortunately, so were the mass of cesspits and network of sewage pipes. Disease was prevalent, but when deadly cholera epidemics exploded in the overcrowded area of Soho, the local doctor, Dr Snow, was able to establish the link between the epidemic and the contaminated local water supply. That was the end of the City corner hand pumps, though they survived in rural areas until the mid-20th century. It is from this date that we see the beginning of our modern water supply, with its amalgamation of the water companies, water boards, filter beds, chlorination and the appearance of bottled water in supermarket aisles. Michael will be discussing the history of London's water supply on 3 November from 10am at the monthly general meeting of the Wanstead and Woodford U3A (members only), which takes place at the Memorial Hall, South Woodford, E18 2PA. 50 shades of orange Can't afford to visit New England for the 'fall' but want to enjoy autumnal colours? Well, we certainly live in the right part of the country, says Tim Harris in the eighth of a series of articles on local biodiversity

T

here are great opportunities to see the turning leaves pretty much anywhere in Epping Forest. But being slightly partisan, I would recommend Wanstead Park on a sunny day in October for the perfect opportunity to photograph, paint or simply gaze at 50 shades of orange. Colour shades are enhanced by the variety of deciduous trees growing in the park, each changing colour at a slightly different time. There are oaks, hornbeams, horse and sweet chestnuts, limes, poplars and birches, to name but a few. All of these undergo dramatic change as the year advances, and it's all down to photosynthesis – the way plants use the chemical chlorophyll to turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar for growth. Chlorophyll is what gives plants their green colour. However, during winter there isn't enough light for photosynthesis, so the trees rest, living off the food they have stored during the summer. As they shut down their food-making factories, the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellows and oranges. Small amounts of these colours have been in the leaves all along but we just can't see them in summer because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll. Brown tones are produced by waste materials left in the leaves, and the reds visible in some leaves are created by trapped glucose. It is the combination of these that make the beautiful autumn colours we enjoy each year. One of my favourite autumn vistas can be enjoyed by sitting outside the tea hut in Wanstead Park on a sunny afternoon. Then, the south-facing splendour of Chalet Wood's horse chestnuts and oaks is dressed in a whole colour chart of yellows, oranges and browns, with a bit of green thrown in as a reminder of summer. If you like to combine exercise with autumnal colour, there are plenty of places for a stroll or cycle. The first is the northern section of Evelyn's Avenue, the avenue of limes that runs through Bush Wood behind Belgrave Road and is backed to the west by an assortment of oaks,

hornbeams and sweet chestnuts. Alternatively, from the Warren Road entrance to the park, it is the shortest of walks to the top of The Glade, a broad swathe of grass descending to the Ornamental Water. The Glade is bounded by the somewhat unruly margins of Warren Wood on one side and Chalet Wood on the other. Although the top of The Glade is not much more than 10 metres above the Ornamental Water, the slope adds some indefinable character that is sufficient to enhance the view of the turning leaves. If you walk along the path running around the lake you have the added bonus of seeing the colours reflected in the still water – perfect for photography – although it may not be so impressive this year because of low water levels. For the cyclist, the view of the southern fringe of Wanstead Park from the Roding Valley Way, as it passes through the 'Exchange Lands' (the site of the former sewage works) close to the west bank of the river, is especially colourful. Here you are looking at some of the tallest trees in the park. So don't miss out this year. Check the forecast, take a look at a map and plan a walking route to take it all in – or look out for one of the guided walks organised by the Friends of Wanstead Parklands or the Wren Group. In the 20th of a series of articles profiling Wanstead's local community heroes, photojournalist Carole Edrich introduces us to Christine Anson

"Y

ou're going to hate me," were the words I was greeted by when I went into the British Heart Foundation shop to interview Christine Anson for this column. The shop was short-staffed so she couldn't leave for a chat over a snack at lunchtime. I wasn't letting her go that easily (she was off for a well-deserved rest in Spain the next day), so I interviewed her in the shop instead. Looking back, I don't think she ate lunch at all. Christine, who originally came from what she describes as "an actual village with fields and sheep and cows, quite similar to our home in the Costa Blanca where a guy still feeds his goats with the bits and pieces he finds", came to London with her partner, who was called back from Spain to troubleshoot some problems in the Olympic Park. She started working in Wanstead's British Heart Foundation shop for something to do. "My Dad has had a heart attack and a stent, and I had volunteered in other places before the British Heart Foundation. My friend and I used to run the tuck shop at the Women's Institute," she explains before laughing and continuing "tuck shop… doesn't that date us!" Before that, Christine did the waste coordinating, the tannoy and the registrations

I did horse riding, sailing, abseiling, clay pigeon shooting and rifle shooting. Then I had a car crash, which damaged muscles, ligaments and tendons in my back. 'Keep Calm, Save Water and Drink Champagne' is particularly appropriate, because a while ago, she discovered she was dairy and wheat intolerant. On diagnosis, the doctor said she shouldn't drink alcohol, but would probably be alright drinking Champagne.

Like many of the British Heart Foundation staff, Christine is CPR trained. So far she hasn't had to use it. She had been volunteering at the Wanstead shop when a management position in Holloway Road became available. She was given it within an hour of the interview. Then when the Wanstead manager went to set up the Loughton shop, Christine transferred to Wanstead. That the recruiters were right – and that the shop is supported by our great community – is borne out by the fact that our local shop ranks somewhere in the top five of all shops in the UK in terms of the money it brings in for the charity.

It would be nice to imagine Christine on holiday back in Spain, sipping Champagne with her old Spanish friends, but I doubt it will happen like that. Over the past few years, some of the British in Spain have started charity shops, having taken the idea from Britain. Her neighbours have already asked her to give pointers as to how to display goods and, as she puts it 'titivate' the shops up. I think she'll be in there helping – old habits die hard, especially when you derive so much satisfaction from what you're clearly good at.

Rumour has it that when she challenged an aggressive thief, several energetic passers-by showed Wanstead's great community spirit by pursuing the thief and holding her until the police arrived. That she likes Wanstead and values our community is apparent whenever she speaks: "Every Christmas, we put up hundreds of baubles. One attached to every

Top of the pops Donna Mizzi reports on the success of last month's art trail pop-up shop, which fast became a focal point for the two-week event and played host to numerous workshops

W

anstead's very first pop-up shop space was warmly welcomed by residents, visitors and fellow shopkeepers last month. Believed to be the first independent pop-up in the borough, the High Street premises opened for two weeks to promote and complement the sixth art trail organised by Art Group Wanstead. Hastily assembled in vacant premises donated by businessman James Long, the Art Trail Centre acted as an information hub and community art centre, to accommodate workshops and a wide range of activities – some to highlight the trail's theme, We Are the Environment. Mural artist Sam Cowan produced a large wall map for individuals to plot good deeds in Wanstead. Her second project, love letters to Wanstead, gave residents a chance to compliment individuals, such as park keepers, valued shopkeepers and the editor of this magazine. Sessions at the pop-up included pottery and soapstone carving; art demonstrations and lessons, including a session for beginners; talks that ranged from philosophy to street art; a film and discussion on climate change; a drop-in poetry evening; and a space for promoting the community allotment site and public gardening projects. Local art-oriented community groups used the space to promote Snaresbrook Arts Project for adults with learning difficulties and Leading Our Lives for children with communication difficulties. Some of the most crowded sessions at the pop-up involved children's activities using recycled materials. Magical trees were created with collage, and plastic bottles were sliced and coloured to resemble stained glass. Repeatedly, people dropped by to say how the centre was providing something lively and completely different from anything else on the High Street. Frequently, shoppers used the hub as a way of giving feedback on the trail and yarn bombing. Then, for the volunteers involved,

one man's comments pulled all the elements together. During one of the evening art lessons, a local man looked in and said: "All the artwork in the shops, on the street and now this pop-up‌ it makes me proud to live in Wanstead." For more information on last month's art trail, visit artgroupwanstead.com

more Help

to Buy

Debra Rose, a partner in the property department at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, takes a look at Help to Buy ISAs, which launch in December and are designed to help first-time buyers save

T

here has been much comment in the news recently about the inability of young people to get on the housing ladder. A report by housing charity Shelter earlier this year found only 43 potentially suitable homes in London currently available that would be 'affordable' for the typical young family buying their first property. Affordability was calculated using an estimate of the average earnings of families in the area and the amount they could borrow based on that income. In a further blow to young peoples' prospects, accountancy firm PwC recently predicted that more than half of the under-40s would be renting homes from private landlords in the UK in 10 years' time. In response, the government have announced an expansion to their Help to Buy scheme with the introduction of the Help to Buy ISA. Designed to help first time buyers save for their deposit, the ISA gives people the opportunity to access up to £3,000 of government funds towards their first home. The scheme is due to start in December 2015 and most of the major banks and building societies have signed up to the scheme. The government will contribute £50 for every £200 saved. You can make an initial £1,000 deposit when you open the account, in addition to making monthly savings. You can save no more than £200 per month, although there is no minimum monthly deposit. Once savers are ready to purchase their first home, they withdraw their savings and receive their government bonus equating to 25% of the total balance. This bonus is capped at £3,000, so there will be no bonus awarded on any savings of more than £12,000. The bonus is paid in the form of a voucher, which will be sent directly to your mortgage lender. The bonus can only be used towards a first home in the UK with a purchase value up to £450,000 in London and up to £250,000 in the rest of the UK. The Help to Buy ISA can be used to save towards both new builds and already occupied houses.

The accounts are per person rather than per home, so couples or friends buying together can each receive a bonus. Thus, a couple each saving £200 per month to a total of £12,000 each will each receive a £3,000 bonus – a total deposit of £30,000. Accounts will be available to first time buyers aged 16 and over, and new accounts will be available to the public for four years after they launch in December – but there is no limit on how long you can continue to save once you've opened an account. Help to Buy ISAs will be available through banks and buildings societies, which will each set their own interest rates as they do with regular cash ISAs. This means savers will earn interest on their savings, as well as getting their bonus. Savers will not be restricted to using the government's Help to Buy mortgages, but can apply for any residential mortgage deal they like. It remains to be seen whether the introduction of the Help to Buy ISA will have any significant effect, but it will undoubtedly help a few young people to buy their own homes. For more information on buying property, call Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000

D

ebs: Victoria sponge – hmmmm! That was my first taste of cake, at home in Leytonstone. I'd hover at Mum's elbow to get the chance to lick the mixing bowl clean! Mum was a phenomenal cake maker, and there was always a cake on the table. We had lots of cousins, so there were many family gatherings – with cake, of course. We moved to Woodford when I was eight years old, by virtue of Mum being a 'Housemother to the Deaf', so there would be 15 of us children in the house during the week, all having fun round an enormous dinner table. That ended when my sister and I reached our teens, and there were 13 teenage boys staying with us! I left school at 18 to work at the Woodford Moathouse Hotel. I learned from a young age that I wanted to provide others with a quality of service I would expect to be given. Bar, cloakroom and reception work followed, always with a smile. Tracy: My dad's Seychellois. He joined the British Army and came to the UK, where he met my mum, who's from Northern Ireland, then he was posted to West Germany, where I was born. Then, my early school years were in Devon, and next door was a lovely woman who taught us kids all sorts of craft skills, including some basic baking. She gave me my first cookbook, Cakes, Bakes and Pastries, and I still have another cookbook she gave me, which was printed in the 1950s, and from there came the recipe for my favourite cake to this day – banana and walnut. I have to confess, I now have a huge collection of cookbooks. We moved to London and I loved my group of friends, always playing outdoors. At school, home economics was my favourite subject, but I had no ambition to cook for a living. Instead, I was determined to become a secretary, which I did, then a PA, mostly in the NHS. Debs and Tracy: About 20 years ago we met as neighbours, and had lots of similar interests. We got involved in the community in Church End and set up the annual picnic on Mill Plain. A knitting group was next, which now meets here. That was the catalyst for Time for Tea. We'd been discussing the potential for this joint venture for ages, so we started making cakes and testing them on the knitting group. After

overcoming cake disasters and honing our skills, we researched the market thoroughly – trying tea and cakes in dozens of cafes. With trepidation, we left our jobs. Our husbands transformed these premises and we stood behind the counter on opening day, holding our breath. High quality Taylors' loose leaf teas are offered, as well as a variety of herbal teas and fresh ground coffee. All our cakes are made here with some assistance from Mum and Dad and we're breathing easier now as we have a regular, friendly clientele, who appreciate a chat and time to relax over a book. We like to offer people time for tea.

Crime and punishment PCSO Alan Winston of the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team summarises a range of 'smaller' crimes, some of which can have big consequences

A

l Capone is the best example to emphasise the point that all laws, no matter what you deem acceptable, could and do affect those around you. Capone, an American gangster who committed countless evil crimes, was eventually convicted of and jailed for tax evasion, proving that big criminals also commit 'small' crimes. Cycling: An adult cycling on the footpath is an offence, as is not having lights on a bike when it is dark. This is both for your safety and the safety of pedestrians and it can carry a £50 fine. So please dismount on the High Street and use Redbridge's great cycling network. Littering: Most of us know that crisp packets, chewing gum and cigarette butts are all litter, and that fly-tipping is not acceptable. However, it appears that a few people believe it is acceptable to leave sex debris by the side of the road. Fun for you, but not for the residents who have to walk past it in the morning. With more residents installing personal CCTV, you could be getting a letter through you door. Bag it, bin it and book a room! Seat belts: Not wearing a seat belt carries a fine of £100, but could cost you so much more. Not wearing a seat belt in the back of the vehicle could kill you and those in the front. If a child is not wearing a seat belt, police will look to take the matter to court, which could carry a fine of up to £500 – still cheap compared to a child's life. A child cannot sit on an adult's lap – one belt, one person! Mobile phones and driving: Despite Bluetooth and other hands-free kits on the market, many drivers still hold their phones whilst driving or don't pull over to talk or text. Using a handheld phone whilst driving carries three points and a £100 fine, assuming that you don't commit any other crimes while driving without due care and attention. If you call somebody and you think that they are driving, do the right thing and hang up.

Al Capone's FBI criminal record in 1932

Speeding: Speed limits are exactly that, they are limits not targets. If the roads are empty, then think about pedestrians. A small change in speed could mean the difference between life and death. Anti-social behaviour: Spitting, swearing and other forms of anti-social behaviour could result in you being arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 for causing harassment, alarm and distress to others. This includes threatening words and behaviour. Drugs: Cannabis is a Class B drug and gets treated like any other drug in that category. A drugs conviction can put you on the 'no fly' list for America, Australia, Canada and many other countries. If caught drug- or drink-driving you will be arrested, and will face a minimum of a 12-month driving ban, a criminal record and a hefty fine. You could also face up to six months in prison. That is assuming that no other offences have been committed as well. Consideration and respect for others and yourself can make the world a happier place. The Wanstead and Snaresbrook Neighbourhood Policing Team run a contact point at Wanstead House every Wednesday and Thursday between 7pm and 8pm, and on Saturdays between 2pm and 3pm. Kids take over

Redbridge Central Library will become the place to be this month with a weekend of activities at the Fabula Festival. Arts Officer Sam Goodey outlines what's in store for kids and invites Wanstead residents to join in

F

abula Festival is a weekend celebration of libraries and the arts brought to you by Vision's Culture and Libraries Service, taking place at Redbridge Central Library in Ilford on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October. There's something for everyone, children and their families, teenagers and adults throughout the whole weekend, but I would like to tell you about Kids Take Over. Kids take over the Children's Library on the ground floor of Redbridge Central Library with live theatre, storytelling, arts and craft and a party to celebrate. Throughout the two days, we have free drop-in sessions for all ages, including monsters and witches mask-making mayhem, bonkers balloons – where you can get kitted out with jet packs or fairy wings – a story time trail treasure hunt that takes you on a journey to the four corners of the library and, of course, we have face painting fun, where you can transform into a pretty butterfly, a roaring tiger or the fantastic Spiderman. On Saturday 24 October at 12 noon and 3pm, we have a very special children's theatre production of Up in the Attic. Join three children on an unforgettable bedtime adventure: a journey through the attic at the top of an old house. As they discover the delights and secrets hidden inside, they're taken on a rollercoaster ride of story, song and surprise. Suitable for three- to sixyear-olds, the production lasts 45 minutes and all tickets, including adults, are £3. Also on Saturday, we have two of our most popular workshops for children aged five and over: make Anansi puppets with Anansi story tales from 11am to 12 noon and bricks and tricks spooky special from 2pm to 3pm. Places for these will go quick, so be sure to book in advance at Central Library for only £1.75 per child. Bright and early on Sunday 25 October, we have something especially for the under-5s at 11am and again at 1pm: Where Caterpillars Go. Follow an inquisitive caterpillar into a beautiful and

Where Caterpillars Go, a show for children under five

tactile garden where together we'll explore life, growth, wonder and loss through live music and playful movement in this fun and visually striking show. The production lasts 45 minutes and all tickets, including adults, are £3. To finish off the fun-filled weekend, we have the monsters' ball celebration from 3pm to 5pm for four- to eight-year-olds, so come and join us for a spook-tacular party to celebrate a monstrous weekend. This fang-tastic kids party will be a real scream! Packed with party games, such as monster statues, Winnie the Witch says, Casper's candy hunt and many more. With disco dancing to Ghostbusters, Thriller and, of course, the Monster Mash! No monsters' ball would be complete without a juicy witch's brew and ghoulish cookies to snack on. This event is free and can be booked at Central Library on a firstcome, first-served basis. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.redbridge.gov.uk/fabulafestival
