Welcome... Depending on what time of the month you've picked up this copy of the Wanstead Village Directory, the spirit of Christmas may or may not still be bestowing you with a festive feel-good factor. Perhaps you have recently spent time with family you seldom see; perhaps you presented a friend with a well-received and thoughtful gift; or perhaps you extended an act of kindness to a stranger. Perhaps any or all of these left you with a feeling of contentment to see in 2014. As the New Year turns into just another year, however, the warm Christmas glow is all too easily replaced by a cold, harsh January. But after the merriment is over and the decorations have been hastily packed away, the goodwill does not have to end as well – not all angels have finished their work by the 12th day of Christmas. Those atop of the trees and on the mantelpieces may now be beginning their 11-month break, but the 'real' angels who walk among us, the community heroes, can be seen offering good will to all men all year (see pages 52-53). It is right that we celebrate the distinguished and illustrious of our society. As a catch-all term for a person reverenced, heroes can range from the helpful neighbour to the selfless soldier. They can be honoured through recognition of their actions and through the telling of their stories. In some sense, spending time deciding how to honour such figures, past and present, is as much a tribute to them as the final product, whatever that may be (see pages 12-13). As we enter 2014, a year in which the centenary of World War I will be commemorated, we can all resolve to ensure we identify and appreciate our own heroes – and perhaps strive to become one ourselves.

Survey analyses over 60 years of snowfall in Wanstead A snow-covered Christchurch Green

Š Geoff Wilkinson

Weather enthusiast Scott Whitehead has analysed snowfall in the local area over the past six decades to help predict what can be expected this winter. "Snow is a very rare commodity in lowland Great Britain – even rarer in the Home Counties, and in our part of east London. The snow survey of Wanstead is my updated version of the Met Office's snow survey of Great Britain, last published in 1992, to find out just how much of the white stuff has fallen

locally since then and in the decades before. The data starts with the classic winter of 1946 to 1947, when

Festive food delivery

Wanstead ladies' cricket

Wanstead High School students visited the Allan Burgess Centre last month to deliver festive food to the service users. The pupils made mince pies, sausage rolls and chocolate yule logs at school, with support from the food technology teachers, before heading to the Age UK centre to present the treats and have a chat with the local residents. It was the school's third visit to the centre in 2013, having taken cakes and biscuits at Easter and then having taken part in an 'old school days' celebration in October.

The Wanstead Cricket Club ladies' team reached the final of the Essex Indoor League last month following a successful run in the group stages, which saw them win seven out of their eight matches. In the final they came up against Colchester and East Essex Cricket Club, who they had already beaten once. A below-par batting performance saw Wanstead bowled out for 61, with an over left in their innings. Colchester chased this down to become the champions, leaving Wanstead runners-up. Queen Victoria at Epping Forest, 1882

Local photographer Geoff Wilkinson has announced new dates for his popular photography workshops, including a photography walk through London's parks on 12 January. "You might be familiar with these parks during the summer, but in winter they

take on a different look – there will be lots of photo opportunities," said Geoff, who is based at the Eightyfour gallery on Nightingale Lane. Basic photography and portraiture workshops are also planned for 19 and 26 January respectively. Call 020 8530 1244

An exhibition documenting the link between Epping Forest and Queen Victoria opens at Wanstead Park's Temple this month. On 6 May 1882, Queen Victoria visited High Beach and dedicated Epping Forest to 'the use and enjoyment of my people for all

Football-themed school play performed to sell-out crowds

Discover the truth behind the legend of Dick Turpin

The flamboyant highwayman of myth

Pupils from Forest School in Snaresbrook performed Peter Terson's footballthemed play Zigger Zagger last month to a sell-out crowd across three nights. A cast of over 50 students acted out the 1960s play, which tells the story of a group of football hooligans

and their pursuits. Humayon Pramanik, the school's head of communications, said: "This was the biggest play, in terms of cast members, that the school has ever done. The numbers on stage made it more spectacular – there was always something going on."

Local historian Georgina Green will be offering an insight into the life and times of Dick Turpin at this month's East of London Family History Society meeting. There are many local stories about the flamboyant highwayman – who was born in 1705 in Hempstead, Essex –

including one that suggests his father was buried in Wanstead. The presentation, which will take place on 22 January from 7pm at Wanstead Library, will explore the facts surrounding these stories, most of which are wrongly based on old legends. Call 020 8508 2403

Swimming pool update

Kenneth More Theatre

It has been confirmed that a 12-metre swimming pool will be installed temporarily in the grounds of Wanstead Leisure Centre this month. The pool – which is being provided by Total Swimming and the Amateur Swimming Association as part of the Mayor of London's Make a Splash programme – will be open for 12 weeks. For the majority of its time here it will be used as a teaching pool to help reduce the list of residents waiting to learn to swim. For the remainder of the time, the pool will be open for public sessions.

The Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford, which plays host to productions ranging from pantomimes and musicals by local groups to touring performances by international acts, is looking for voluntary board members to join its team. Applicants will need to show a commitment to the arts, understand charity and company law and demonstrate sound judgement and business skills. Applications must be received by Friday 31 January, with interviews taking place in February. Call 020 8708 2315

Music teacher award

Campaigners proved right

A music teacher from Forest School has been nominated for best digital resource in the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence. Mr Stephen Wiles, who is also head of e-Learning at the Snaresbrook school, created a music theory website containing free video lessons to aid his classes. "I am particularly happy that videos which were intended only for Forest pupils are now being received by a much wider community," said Mr Wiles, who will discover if he has won next month. Snaresbrook Primary School – which resisted the threat of academisation after being placed in special measures in June 2013 – has been ranked the fifth best school in the borough following the recently published KS2 2013 results. "The arguments against academisation were that Snaresbrook could and would pull itself up, that we are an excellent community school that had a temporary dip. This has been proven. We look forward to Snaresbrook Primary going from strength to strength," said parent Deborah Watson.

After a year of fundraising activities, members of Wanstead High School's student council presented cheques to representatives of three different charities last month. A total of £3,200 was raised during the last academic year through events such

as non-uniform days, a Macarena world record attempt, a Harlem Shake and a rooftop concert, along with collections at Friday prayers and other functions. This was then shared among Great Ormond Street Hospital, Orphans in Need and The Lord's Taverners.

Remembering

WWI

Š Geoff Wilkinson

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War. A range of local commemorative events are being planned by the council and members of the public are urged to come forward with their own suggestions for tributes to this milestone in world history. Ahead of a public meeting on the subject organised by the East London Humanists, Paul Kaufman explains his group's thoughts on how the centenary should be remembered

A

nyone contemplating the local impact of World War One might want to pause and reflect for a few moments at the war memorial on Wanstead High Street. It was designed by the renowned sculptor Abbott Trent, an Associate of the Royal Academy, who was born in Forest Gate. The names inscribed on the memorial include 192 "men of Wanstead" who fought and were killed in WWI "at the call of King and country." That represents roughly one death to every 15 households, based on the reports of the medical officer of the former Wanstead Urban District Council, which gives a population at the time of 16,000. A whole generation of young men was lost. In all, about one million UK citizens died, including many civilians killed by disease. Every continent was affected by the war. Some put the worldwide toll as high as 15 million. The government has set aside ÂŁ50 million for commemorations this year and Redbridge Council has begun planning events to mark the centenary. Our group, the East London Humanists, has urged the council to ensure that the plans involve everyone, including both the religious and the non-religious. Humanists are not all pacifists. However, our view that this is the only life we have does mean that we place particular value on the life of everyone in the here and now. The United Kingdom Armed Forces Humanist Association is one of the largest belief groups in the Forces. One of its patrons, broadcaster Dan Snow, leads the campaign for humanists to be allowed to participate in the Armistice Day ceremony. Our group's view is that there is little positive to actually celebrate about WWI and that any form of glorification should be avoided. Many will now have difficulty thinking of any possible justification for the huge slaughter perpetrated on all sides. However, a set of events that still carries an important positive message today were the truces of Christmas 1914, when opposing soldiers greeted each other in no man's land, exchanged gifts and even played football together. Perhaps they appreciated that they had more in common with each other than they did with the politicians who sent them to fight. We should also remember that some brave voices did resist the tide and spoke out against the war at the time. One such voice was that of famous Woodford resident and suffragist Sylvia Pankhurst. She was a signatory to the open

Christmas letter sent in 1914 to the women of Germany. The words of the letter still ring true today: "The brunt of modern war falls upon non-combatants, and the conscience of the world cannot bear the sight. Is it not our mission to preserve life? Do not humanity and common sense alike prompt us to join hands with the women of neutral countries, and urge our rulers to stay further bloodshed?" Perhaps Sylvia Pankhurst is deserving of a 'Mandela' moment, an official acknowledgement that a one-time 'enemy of the state' was, in fact, the voice of reason and progress. Our group has made various suggestions to commemorate the centenary. These include poetry readings and displays of works around the borough by the great WWI poets. We have also suggested sprucing up the Sylvia Pankhurst memorial in Woodford. There are already plans by the council to remember those awarded the Victoria Cross, but our group thinks that the 306 soldiers who were shot by firing squad for alleged cowardice should also be commemorated. Many were only young boys suffering from shell-shock. They were finally pardoned by the government in 2006 and are now represented by the poignant Shot at Dawn statue at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. We believe that a local ceremony would be a fitting way to remember that war causes mental as well as physical scars, something that was not so widely understood 100 years ago. We should also remember the victims of more recent conflicts. It is not entirely coincidental that some of the most troubled states, such as Syria and Iraq, were artificially created by Western powers when the Middle East was carved up at the end of WWI. We should ensure that any commemoration involves all of our different communities, including the many who have come here to seek refuge from war. Our suggestion is a modern re-enactment of the Christmas truces, including a symbolic exchange of gifts between communities to celebrate our common humanity and desire for peace. The East London Humanists will be holding a public meeting on 13 January from 7.30pm at Wanstead Library, allowing people to share their views on WWI and how it might be commemorated. Cinema without distraction As the Wanstead and Woodford WEA Centenary Film Club begin another year of monthly screenings, Patsy Whiteside explains why watching a film at home can never match the magic of the cinema

I

have stopped saying how amazed (not to say dazed and confused) I am by the accelerating advance of technology. Stopped saying it because it puts me firmly in a category that I would rather avoid – old fogey – but not stopped thinking it. Advances in technology have affected every aspect of communication, and of course the cinema, arguably the first mass medium, is no exception. A Hollywood blockbuster, a year in the making and costing billions of dollars, can be purchased at the supermarket as a DVD and on your television screen within weeks of release, and the time lag between cinema and DVD release is becoming ever shorter. When you watch the film from the comfort of your armchair, you can pause it to answer the telephone, go to the kitchen for a drink, or even keep the second half for the next day. And the cost of the DVD is about the same as two cinema tickets. So why go to the cinema at all? There are two answers. The first is the shared experience. In the late 1960s, I went with my then boyfriend to a midnight matinée at the Empire, Leicester Square (actually it started at 11pm, but the alliteration was too good to pass up). The film was Gone With The Wind, which was, by then, more than a decade older than us, but was probably the first to deserve the title of 'blockbuster'. I had never seen it. Do you remember the scene early in the film where Scarlett O'Hara (played by Vivien Leigh) is standing at the top of the grand colonial staircase at the Tara plantation and Rhett Butler is standing at the bottom looking up? As the camera focused on Rhett, there was an audible intake of breath from every woman in the audience. From that moment I ceased to wonder why Clark Gable, with his sticky-out ears and less-than-perfect teeth, was such hot property in Hollywood. If I had watched the film for the first time in my living room, I would have missed that magical mass reaction.

The second answer is the spell. A good film will cast a spell over the audience, put them on a magic carpet and take them on an exhilarating journey to an unknown destination. If you stop the film to make a cup of tea, you break the spell and the magic cannot be recaptured. Before the advent of the WEA Centenary Film Club, I had all but given up going to the cinema. I did not enjoy wading through two feet of popcorn to get to my seat, listening to other people commenting loudly on the film, or worse, having conversations on their mobiles, or having my nostrils filled with the odour of burgers and chips. Thank goodness the film club came along. Once a month I can share the experience with like-minded people and allow myself to be spellbound for an hour or two. The WEA film club meets at 12.30pm on the first Monday of each month (excluding August) at the Odeon in South Woodford. The next film to be shown will be Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine on 6 January. Annual membership is £1 or £1.50 for couples (the cinema's usual charges also apply). For more information, email weafilmclub@gmail.com

Paul Wershof, consultant and former senior partner at local solicitors Wiseman Lee, explains the problems associated with legal expenses insurance, which is often included by default on car and home policies

I

f you have home or car insurance it is likely that you also have legal expenses insurance (LEI). This is because insurance providers typically include it as a default option – you have to specify that you don't want LEI rather than opting to accept it. On the face of it, there is no obvious reason not to agree to buying LEI cover – the cost is very modest, usually somewhere between £20 and £30, and it provides cover for up to £100,000. Under a good scheme, you should have access to a lawyer, who will establish whether you have a legal claim or not. Insurance cover will remove most (if not all) of the financial risk of pursuing rights and also has a deterrent effect – people know that you have it, they know you are able to defend yourself and so are less likely to pursue you through the courts. So what's not to like? Well, quite a lot actually. The policies are often very limited in what they will cover and insurers will only accept a claim that, in their sole view, has a good prospect of success. Also, the insurance companies only want you to instruct one of their panel solicitors (with whom they may have a profit-sharing agreement) and this can throw up potentially damaging conflicts of interest. For example, as John Antell, a barrister specialising in insurance cases, puts it: "Panel firms like to keep insurance companies happy, so there is a tendency for them to end up giving a pessimistic assessment of the chances of success. It is not necessarily the case that there is any deliberate intention of giving an inaccurate assessment, but a relatively junior solicitor, in an environment where the worst thing is considered to be over estimation of chances of success, will naturally err on the side of underestimation." Furthermore, it is often a term of such policies that an insured person is required to accept an offer of settlement that the insurance company considers reasonable. So, if you have a claim worth £5,000, for example, you may well be required to accept an offer of £3,000. Your panel solicitor, who should be fighting your corner, may well recommend acceptance for the simple

reason that they are being paid a fixed fee by the insurance company and it is in the solicitor's interest for you to accept. They won't be paid any more for trying to get you more money. Assume for a moment that you opted out of LEI when you renewed your car insurance this year. You then have an accident in which you are injured and the value of your claim is around £5,000. The fact is, assuming a reasonable prospect of success, any local solicitor would be able to advise you of the true value and prospects for your claim, without the potential conflicts of interest faced by an insurer's panel solicitor. Also, a recent ruling of the European Court of Justice may make it easier for those with LEI to instruct the solicitor of their choice when making a claim. As ever, if you are unsure of your rights or you are unhappy with the conduct of your insurance company, or their panel solicitors, speak to your local independent solicitor. Long live murder As the Wanstead Players prepare to take to the stage of Ilford's Kenneth More Theatre for a production of murder mystery The Hollow, director Peter Wilson explains why local theatres deserve our support to survive

J

ust another amateur drama group putting on yet another murder mystery play, you might be thinking. But you would be wrong. As the play's director, I have to say that this production is highly significant for several important reasons. Yes, it is a murder mystery; but it was written by the acknowledged queen of crime, Agatha Christie, and as such has a well-structured plot with a host of suspects, all with their own stories and perhaps with their own reasons for wishing the victim dead. Add to this a helter skelter of twists and turns before the final dénouement is reached and you have the best type of murder mystery. It is also significant for the Wanstead Players as this play forms part of our 90th anniversary year of productions. We have certainly come a long way from performing in a church hall in Wanstead – with the stage lit by headlights temporarily taken off of the cars of those members of the group fortunate enough to own a car – to the well-appointed and extremely comfortable Kenneth More Theatre. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of Kenneth More's birth, and we are lucky to be kicking off the theatre's celebration year with such an interesting and exciting play. As everyone is aware, we face tough times financially, and nowhere is this truer than in the field of the arts and culture. However, this does not mean that Redbridge has to become a cultural desert. There are hundreds of gifted amateur entertainers, singers, dancers and actors in this borough, and the quality of work we produce is extremely varied and of the highest standard. Much of this work is showcased at the Kenneth More Theatre, which deserves better support than it is currently receiving. I do not believe there are not many locations in Greater London that can boast such a purpose-built centre for

music and drama, and it saddens me to hear local people ask: "Is there a theatre in Ilford?" especially when the answer is an emphatic "Yes!" It does exist and it is currently alive and well, but can only remain that way if it receives your support. Don't let this be another of those instances where we only appreciate something after we have lost it. So, if you have been interested enough to read this article, might I ask you to go one step further and come along to the Kenneth More Theatre to see our production of The Hollow and have a go at trying to work out which of the 10 or so suspects actually done it? Unfortunately, there are no prizes for guessing correctly, but I think we can promise you a challenging and enjoyable evening of theatre. Performances of The Hollow will take place on 30 and 31 January at 7.30pm and on 1 February at 3pm and 7.30pm at the Kenneth More Theatre, Oakfield Road, Ilford, IG1 1BT. Wanstead Park 1699–1750 The ovvners of

In the 13th of a series of monthly articles looking at former owners of Wanstead Park, Richard Arnopp tells how Sir Richard Child created the park's landscape as we know it, almost ruining himself in the process

L

ast month, we looked at Richard Child's long struggle to obtain the ennoblement that he desired in order to crown his family's advancement in wealth and status. His rather equivocal success – an Irish viscountcy and earldom – was a phenomenon that became more common as the 18th century progressed. The British House of Lords was becoming concerned about its exclusivity being diluted and so the Crown became more cautious, increasingly using Irish peerages as consolation prizes for those unsuitable or unready for their British equivalents. This second-class status was understandably resented by the Irish, as was the fact that many of their new peers (including Child) had no connection with Ireland. However, the net result was that the growth in Irish titles was four times that of the British peerage between 1719 and 1799.

Richard Child's transformation of Wanstead Park should probably be seen as part of his campaign to demonstrate his fitness to "support" a peerage: the redesigned gardens were to be of a scale and grandeur appropriate to a great nobleman. To this end, in the first few years of his ownership, Child commissioned George London – the most celebrated landscape gardener of his day – to redesign the park in what was said to be the last major project of his life (London died in 1714). A set of engravings by Jan Kip depict London's scheme. Dating from before 1715 and giving imaginary oblique aerial views to the north, west and east, the engravings show many features, which are either still traceable or were confirmed by contemporary accounts. However, Kip undoubtedly flattered the park, and there are possible indications that he may

Jan Kip's view of Wanstead, circa 1715

have been influenced by the self-aggrandising tendencies of Richard Child. For one thing, he showed the site as essentially level, which it certainly is not. Also, he exaggerates the extent of the quincunx pattern of avenues in the direction of Leytonstone, in order to make the landscape surrounding the house look much more extensive than it really was. An anonymous poem in praise of the gardens at Wanstead, Flora Triumphans, published in 1712, may have been commissioned by Child with a similar objective to the engravings. However, even if some details of the garden layout Kip depicted were idealised, exaggerated or even invented, there can be no doubt that George London's extraordinary vision for Wanstead Park as an "English Versailles" was broadly implemented. Indeed, the formal framework of London's design continues to influence the park to this day. In 1715, Child also commissioned the replacement of Wanstead House with a monumental new building in the neo-Palladian style. Designed by Colen Campbell, and later much admired and copied, it was begun around 1715, roofed by 1720 and completed by 1722. William Kent was responsible for decoration of the state rooms. At the same time as the new house was being constructed, the gardens were again radically reordered in line with changing fashions, and perhaps to reflect Child's move toward the newly ascendant Whigs following the accession of George I (architects and landscape gardeners being, at that time, associated with political factions). Some elements of the less elaborately formal post-1715 scheme, with its focus on a vast new lake system surrounding the house on three sides, appear to bear the hallmarks of Charles Bridgeman and William Kent (a

more significant garden designer than he was a painter), even if documentary evidence of their involvement is lacking. Also, there are intriguing parallels between the layouts of Wanstead Park and Kensington Gardens, where Bridgeman, along with Henry Wise, was undoubtedly responsible for the design. Kent was involved at Kensington too – he decorated the state rooms at the palace, and may also have had some influence on the gardens. At Wanstead, a significant role was undoubtedly played by Adam Holt, whose services were retained by Child, and who was a notable nurseryman and landscape gardener in his own right. Wanstead Park's lake system as it now exists was probably largely Holt's creation, though he may have been acting with, or under the direction of, others. Extraordinarily ambitious, Richard Child's schemes for Wanstead were never to be fully realised. A plan by the celebrated cartographer Jean Rocque, dated 1735, discloses the intention to add wings to Wanstead House and extend the gardens far into Snaresbrook to the north. Nathaniel Salmon refers to this as something that was intended, but had not yet been completed in The History and Antiquities of Essex of about 1740. However, the granting of leases in the 1740s in areas of Wanstead village that would have been affected suggests a scaling down of the project by then, and in 1748 the visiting Swedish-Finnish scientist Pehr Kalm stated unequivocally that: "My Lord Tilney had laid out so much on all this that he has barely as much left that he can in some sort support his state, or maintain what he has here erected. This was evident both with the house and garden, which had not been fully completed, because the owner's resources did not allow him to incur further expense". The Serpentine Lakes to the south of Wanstead House, incomplete in 1735, were finished off to a more modest plan by 1745, which they still largely retain. A few years later, in 1750, Earl Tylney of Castlemaine, as he now was, died while travelling in France. Next month, we will look at the life of John, 2nd Earl Tylney of Castlemaine: a man whose unorthodox private passions resulted in two decades of exile in Italy. New year, old yoga Yoga has been around for thousands of years. If an exercise form has been keeping minds and bodies fit and healthy for that long, it must have something, says local instructor Tony Cranston

I

n the history of exercise, yoga came first, some 6,000 years ago. In China it became known as Qigong. It was then brought to Sweden in the early 1800s by Per Lin, who renamed it keep fit. This took off around the world, but was changed in the 1930s by the Nazis, when many of the ideas Per Lin espoused, such as slow breathing and meditation, were immediately dropped. Later, it was renamed again in the late 1960s as aerobics. This came about at just the right time for Britain, which, because of increasing rates of heart disease, had become known as the 'sick man of the west'. I want you to forget the image of chanting, wrapping your legs around your neck or standing on your head; yoga is nothing like that at all. The stretches, movements and postures are suitable for all levels of fitness, with everyone encouraged to only do what is comfortable for them. Yoga concerns itself with the whole person, not just certain parts of the body, and so it works in all areas, including physical strength, stamina, energy, core muscles, posture, breathing, joints and the mind. Yoga, therefore, is perhaps the best long-lasting solution to our stressful lifestyles – it is brain training and fitness rolled into one. Those who have tried it often say that it gives them a brighter outlook on life and an increased sense of well-being.

I have been teaching all styles of yoga for over 36 years, across the UK, Holland, USA and China – and at Wanstead House for over 10 years. I began with one Thursday night class that became so popular, it grew too big and has now spilled into a second evening session on Sundays. Of course, every teacher has their own speciality. Mine is relaxation, and I have never failed to teach a person how to relax on their first session. I hope that in 2014 you will try yoga for yourself and create a new you in the New Year.

United we eat Founder of Organic Ilford Toni Dipple is using her passion for farming to improve the local environment and community. She hopes residents across Redbridge will be united in making chemical-free food the norm

I

was born and raised in Ilford by my wonderful family, where food and nature were key features of my childhood. My mum and nan took delight in buying veg from the once-vibrant Romford Market, and cooking up hearty meals from proper ingredients. My dad kept chickens, rabbits and all sorts in our little back garden off Ilford Lane, and taught my brothers and me the value of nature and to be compassionate, but not sentimental. He'd even take me to Essex farming auctions – a bit odd, thinking about it, but I loved it. I grew up and moved away. Two years ago I found myself back living in Ilford. I wandered around, reacquainting myself with my hometown – I hated what I saw: betting shops, money lenders, 'dirty' chicken shops and litter everywhere. But what could I do? Then, I kept thinking of Arthur Ashe's wise words: "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." It was the catalyst to understanding that, if you want a place to change, stay and change it. So, I stopped complaining, followed my passion for farming, found the Growing Communities' Starter Farm – a four-acre organic growing site in Dagenham (yes, Dagenham) – and volunteered. At the farm, I regained a sense of purpose and realised I could make a tangible difference by creating a business rooted in practical and positive local solutions to global problems. So, with guidance from Growing Communities' Startup Programme, I founded Organic Ilford CIC, a veg box scheme with a difference. As a social enterprise, Organic Ilford places people and the planet before profit. We pay local small-scale farmers a fair price for their produce, enabling them to stay in business, pay our staff a living wage and reinvest in projects that benefit the local environment, community and economy. We're community-led, which means we give a monkey's about people, especially their health.

Fresh, local, seasonal chemical-free food is tastier and more nutritious, but is hard to come by in Redbridge. Organic food has become niche, accounting for only 4% of food grown in the UK, yet all food up until 100 years ago was organic. It's what food was. Food unites us and we're determined to make chemical-free food the norm, not a lifestyle choice. The Organic Ilford box scheme is the first step. By keeping our overheads low through minimal and reusable packaging and offering community collection points rather than home delivery, which has the added benefit of supporting local businesses, we can pass those savings on to you. There's lots we want to do. Top of our list is finding land to grow produce for our box scheme and teaching the residents and workers of Redbridge and the surrounding boroughs how to grow food in a sustainable and enjoyable way. If you know of anywhere, get in touch. Every penny spent on the right kind of food is a vote for a more resilient, fairer and localised food system. hirty-five years? It seems like only yesterday. I had a terrible day yesterday." "The drive was so tight that if my car had another coat of paint it'd have scratched the sides." "You should have told me you went to the Vatican, because I have the Pope's phone number. It's a great one: VAT 69". If you are into off-colour jokes over coffee at Nice Croissant, then Colin Bird is your man. One of the shop's other regulars told me: "Sometimes, his jokes annoy the hell out of you, but he has an absolute heart of gold." Colin talks to absolutely everyone, sharing his quirky, clichéd, tacky jokes whether they like it or not. At times, it seems he lives at Nice Croissant – Colin is one of the stalwarts of a group that seemed to accrete there gradually, comprised of individuals from disparate parts of Wanstead. We'd just roll up to share coffee and a chat outside (because some of the group were smokers) in the fresh heat of late spring under beautifully-scented lime tree blossoms, sheltering from summer showers beneath the awning, watching passers-by and the awesome autumn colours in Christchurch Green, or taking care to dress warmly enough to sit outside and enjoy the group's company in winter. I call us the coffee mafia, for no other reason than the words sound good. I was off to the Maldives at the end of 2004 and looking forward to it so much that the coffee mafia had as little choice in being subjected to my plans as they did to Colin's jokes. Off I went to have fun and got 'tsunami'd' with everyone else. I don't know how many houses he visited before finding my parents' place, but my parents (who had never met him) tell me he turned up to ask if I was alright, just after the tsunami had hit. On discovering that I was, this man, who I had only met casually in a coffee shop, insisted on driving all the way to the airport to collect me and take me home. It's typical of Colin, he goes out of his way to help people and then turns it into a joke. This first Angels in Wanstead article was delivered late because, when I asked if we could meet for coffee so that I could write about one or two of his less off-colour jokes, he had no time as he was driving an elderly couple to the station: "Look at them, she's 82 and he's a

spring chicken at 76. They shouldn't have to get the tube, so I'm taking them to Kings Cross." Colin makes time to help anyone. Last year, when it was snowing and treacherous outside, he telephoned some of the oldest Nice Croissant regulars daily to find out how they were. "He knew they'd be missing out on a highlight of their day, so he called them all regularly, collected them from home and brought them here to the café and back again," explained another regular. Colin talks of their pin-sharp sense of humour and what lovely people they are, and when challenged, responds with: "They're friends, it's what you do for friends." If only more people did.

Carole has published an Angels in Wanstead calendar – available from Wanstead High Street shops – to raise funds for the charity Cyclists Fighting Cancer. A 2015 version is also being planned and Carole would like to hear from anyone with suggestions for stories and models – email opkikkertje@gmail.com or leave a message for Carole at The Larder, 39 High Street, Wanstead.

Family learning The Redbridge Institute offers a range of courses designed for adults to learn with their children. Art Attack! is one such course beginning next month at Wanstead House. Ruth Coston reports

W

anstead House Community Centre will be hosting Redbridge Institute's fun family learning Art Attack! course next month. The course is designed for adults to learn with children, such that both can develop and further their art skills in a fun and interesting way. Redbridge Institute's family learning courses are a great way for families to learn together, spend time together and develop a mutual interest, which you can then continue with your child long after the course has finished. The Art Attack! course – which begins on Wednesday 26 February – will unleash you and your child's hidden creative streaks using different ways of making art through drawing. Using photos, real-life objects, charcoal and pastels, you'll learn how to draw everything from a favourite animal to a beautiful sunset. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles or other family members aged 18 years and over can enrol with up to two children as young as five years. We just ask that you take responsibility for your child and their learning in class by getting involved and participating in all activities and challenges set by the tutor, so that you can continue to foster your child's interest and learning at home and to share their new talent with family and friends. Sessions will be delivered in a fun, interactive and enjoyable way, with clear and simple explanations and practical demonstrations. You and your child will also benefit from plenty of individual support and guidance from a highlyqualified and engaging tutor, who is also an established artist. The tutor will also help you see the progress you are making over the five-week course. Why not give it a go? Places always fill up quickly, so enrol in person at Wanstead House or phone our customer service advisors sooner rather than later to secure a place for you and your child.

Family Learning is a fantastic way to open up new doors to possibilities – people can grow to be more confident and motivated through learning at any age. Redbridge Institute delivers learning right in the heart of our local communities in Redbridge. Every year over 6,000 learners successfully complete courses, either at the well-equipped centres in Gants Hill and Ilford or one of the many local centres provided by community partners, such as Wanstead House. Redbridge Institute's Art Attack! course begins on 26 February and runs every Wednesday until 26 March, from 4pm to 5.30pm, at Wanstead House, 21 The Green, Wanstead, E11 2NT. Enrolment costs £10 for one adult and up to two children. For more information, call 020 8550 2398 or visit www.redbridge-iae.ac.uk

What do you want from your dentist? At Woodford House we’ll ALWAYS listen to you, so

YOU CHOOSE! ‘T

HERE IS MORE than one approach to most dental care issues, so patients should always feel they’re making their own decisions,’ says Dr Amjad Malik, Principal Practitioner at Woodford House Dental Practice. ‘It’s up to us to explain their options simply but carefully so they can make a guided choice as to what’s best for them’. Whether you want regular checkups and basic treatment to keep a healthy set of teeth, intensive remedial work or high-end cosmetic treatments, Woodford House has the answer. Their services divide effectively into three ranges: Essentials – for routine maintenance and preventative care; Dentistry for Life – permanent solutions for a more comfortable mouth – and life; and Just for You – a range of cosmetic treatments to boost your confidence and make you better looking. ‘People often feel shy about asking if their looks might be improved,’ continues Dr Malik. ‘They may want a more attractive smile, a younger-looking face or simply a change in something that’s always made them feel self-conscious such as a discoloured or awkwardly-positioned tooth. If we feel nature could be improved on as is often the case, we will outline exactly what can be done. The solution may be simpler than they were expecting – and perhaps less expensive, too.’ Regardless of your own needs, you’ll enjoy a warm welcome at Woodford House. As well as offering the highest level of care, they use only best-quality products, Britishbought where possible – and the services of top dental laboratories. ‘Our patients are assured a better-looking, longer lasting and superior result – which, in every case, must be right for them personally.’

Flower power Having opened their shop Lillies of Wanstead 15 years ago this month, sisters Barbara Neofitou and Kay Stavrou reflect on why they love their work, their customers and their high street

W

e opened the doors to Lillies of Wanstead on 19 January 1999 and have grown from strength to strength ever since. Choosing Wanstead as the location for our shop was easy as we grew up and went to school here (Wanstead Church School, Snaresbrook Primary School and Wanstead High School). Our business stemmed (excuse the pun) out of a desire to follow in our grandmother's footsteps, who was very green fingered and very passionate about flowers. Our childhood memories of picking flowers from her garden and arranging them into glass jars obviously stirred enough passion for us to both choose floristry as a career path. From weddings to funerals, our day-to-day work requires dealing with both the happiest and saddest moments of people's lives, so building a relationship with our customers is important to us, and these customer relations have often turned into ongoing friendships. We pride ourselves in offering a bespoke service and, over the years, have arranged flowers for some interesting events. We have worked with event companies, wedding planners, TV companies and photographers and, of course, the local residents of Wanstead whom we see and speak to everyday. Wanstead and the High Street itself has certainly changed over the years, but still has that allimportant village feel to it, which is something we are proud to be a part of. We find that people travel from far and wide to visit Wanstead – it has become a very trendy area and more and more younger couples, with their families, are moving into areas near the High Street. We feel the community in Wanstead is very friendly and family oriented and we find they like to support their local independent shops. It is exactly this attitude that enables us to continue to do the work we love. We also believe that

shopping locally is a way of life that many more people would enjoy – and benefit from – if they gave themselves the chance to experience the advantages of calling upon a local specialist. In celebrating our crystal anniversary, we would like to thank all those who have supported us through the years, and equally extend a warm welcome to any new residents – you have picked a wonderful and unique pocket of London to call home and we hope you will be as happy here as we have been and will continue to be for many more years to come. Lillies of Wanstead is located at 2 Gwynne House, High Street, Wanstead (near the junction of Sylvan Road and Wanstead High Street). Visit www.lilliesofwanstead.co.uk or call 020 8518 8893

Watercolour ways Ahead of a watercolour demonstration at Wanstead House this month, artist Jim Merriott presents a selection of his work and discusses his childhood memories of Wanstead Park

I

was born in the East End of London in 1941 and from an early age I was hugely inspired by my uncle, Jack Merriott (1901 to 1968), one of the truly great watercolourists, indeed great artist from the middle of the last century. Part of his legacy was to record the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II from Westminster Abbey and, with other top artists of the day, he was commissioned to produce landscapes of Britain for the various railway companies and later British Rail. Today, I remain immensely inspired by his work. My career in the London Fire Brigade was cut short with the onset of arthritis in 1971, which directed me to dedicate myself to my art at a time when my disabilities became severe. I have been demonstrating watercolour painting to clubs and groups for many years. In 2005, and up to the present day, I was invited to complete a regular monthly village feature of watercolours for the prestigious Essex Life and Hertfordshire Life magazines. 2005 also saw the production of my DVD of painting techniques My Way with Watercolour and so I regard it a great privilege to be asked to write this article and, later in the month, to demonstrate at the Essex Art Club. I have produced many thousands of cards and calendars depicting the beauty of Essex and further afield. More recently, a lifetime ambition was fulfilled with the publication of my autobiography Watercolours, the Pain and the Passion, with many colour plates of my watercolours over 167 pages. My prolific output of work numbers in excess of 20,000 over 40 years, and I can look back over a fabulous life painting and sketching throughout many countries in Europe. Coming to Wanstead is like returning home for me, to a place where, as a child, I travelled on my sisters hand-me-down bicycle to spend many days fishing at Wanstead Park's Ornamental Waters and at Hollow Ponds in Whipps Cross. My fondest memories, however, are those of my

younger brother Steve and I searching for newts in Wanstead Park's Heronry Pond. I ponder the thought of how many of today's children will escape their computer games to experience the thrill of newting. It encourages me enormously, however, to know from my school visits that so many infants fall under the spell of painting with watercolour. Many will become accomplished artists and the torch will be passed on to new generations. With my great love of art history, I recall the words of the modern American artist Edward Hopper (1882 to 1967): "If it could be said in words there would be no need to paint." Jim will be giving a practical watercolour demonstration for the Essex Art Club on 26 January, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, at Wanstead House, 21 The Green, Wanstead, E11 2NT (non-members: £5; members: £3.50). Understanding cancer In the fourth of a series of articles looking at different types of cancers, Wanstead resident Dr Frank Chinegwundoh MBE explains the symptoms and risks of lung cancer

L

ung cancer is a common cancer, with more than 41,000 people developing the disease in the UK every year. It affects more men than women, but the rate in women has been increasing over the past 10 years, whereas the rate in men is decreasing. Lung cancer is very much associated with cigarette smoking, but other risk factors include: exposure to radon gas (naturally occurring and radioactive); air pollution; genetics; lowered immunity; and diet. Symptoms include: a continuing cough; increasing breathlessness; coughing up blood; a hoarse voice; loss of appetite; and excessive tiredness. The two main types of lung cancer are called small cell and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). They behave differently and thus are treated differently. Small cell cancers grow and spread quickly and chemotherapy is usually required. Of the subdivisions of NSCLC, the commonest is called squamous cell carcinoma, which is usually found near the centre of the lung in one of the main airways, called bronchi. If caught early, these cancers are amenable to surgery. In testing for lung cancer, the GP or specialist will arrange a chest X-ray. Where this indicates a problem, a CT scan may be needed to further define the area of concern in the lung. This is followed by a bronchoscopy, where a tube is passed down the airway, under local anaesthesia, and a biopsy of the abnormal-looking area is taken for the pathologist to analyse. The stage of a cancer tells you how big it is and how far it has spread, which in turn helps to determine the treatment. The previously mentioned tests may give sufficient information or further scans may be required. TNM staging is a common way of expressing the extent of the disease. It takes the following factors into account: the size and position of the tumour (T); whether cancer cells have spread into the lymph nodes (N); and whether the tumour has spread anywhere else in the body – secondary cancer or metastases (M). The doctor gives each factor

Cross section of a bronchus Windpipe (trachea)

Capillary

Bronchiole and alveoli

a number. So, a very small cancer which hasn't spread is T1 N0 M0. A cancer that is larger and has spread into the lymph nodes and to another part of the body is T3, N1, M1. The outlook after treatment depends on the initial staging (a T1 N0 M0 cancer will do much better than a T3N1M1). Treatment is individualised to the patient. It may need surgery (to remove all or part of a lung), radiotherapy to the lung or chemotherapy, or a combination of treatments. Other less common treatments include cryotherapy, diathermy and photodynamic therapy. There are several trials to develop more effective treatments and patients should be given the opportunity to take part. To give some statistics, 58% to 73% of early, small, non-small cell lung cancer patients would live for at least five years after treatment. As with most cancers, if caught early, cure is possible. Having said that, unfortunately, many with lung cancer present late, when the disease has spread, making cure unlikely. Dr Chinegwundoh is a member of the UK Lung Cancer Coalition and a consultant urological surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust. For more information, visit www.uklcc.org.uk

Reaching out Ahead of an outreach presentation at the Wanstead and Woodford U3A, Richard Speller of the Redbridge Samaritans offers some insight into a charity that provides support to anyone in emotional distress

I

n 1953, a Church of England clergyman, the Reverend Chad Varah, with one telephone in the crypt of his church, started the very first telephone helpline. That helpline has now become an organisation with over 200 branches in the UK and Eire and almost 20,000 volunteers. To understand what exactly the Samaritans stand for, nothing sums it up better than the mission statement of the movement. The Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those that may lead to suicide. The mainstay of the Samaritans is this roundthe-clock telephone – and now email and text – support. Callers to the branch are also always welcome. A key ethos of the Samaritans is that the service is completely confidential and nonjudgemental. All of us at some time experience emotional distress and many people welcome the opportunity to talk to someone they do not know, in complete confidence, who will not judge or try to tell them what to do. Callers can range in age from six to 100, from all social, ethnic and religious groupings. They may be abuse victims, have financial, physical or mental health problems, eating disorders or be self-harmers. Many people who call are lonely and suffer extreme isolation. Not all of them have suicidal thoughts, but, nevertheless, are distressed and need support. An extremely important part of the Samaritans work is its outreach programme, which includes talks and the delivery of emotional health workshops to businesses, schools and colleges. An excellent example of outreach work is our partnership with Network Rail. It may have been noticed that, on a number of railway platforms, there are posters advising of our service. The painting of zigzag yellow warning lines is another result of this partnership. The effect of railway suicides on train drivers and other railway staff

and passengers, as well as the families of the victims, is usually horrendous. Designed to reduce the incidence of railway suicides, the programme appears to be having a positive effect. The Redbridge Samaritans are also heavily involved in patrolling Ilford station and providing support at Stratford as well. I have been invited to deliver a talk to Wanstead and Woodford U3A this month. This, together with talks to other adult organisations, is yet another part of the outreach programme. It should be said that the opportunity to find and recruit volunteers will not be missed. Most people have it in them to become a volunteer. It is a remarkable way to use transferable life skills and see life through a different lens, while providing help and support to vulnerable people. Richard will be discussing the history of the Samaritans on 7 January, 10am at the monthly general meeting of the Wanstead and Woodford U3A (members only), which takes place at the Memorial Hall, High Road, South Woodford, E18 2PA. For membership enquiries, call 020 8505 5018 The Redbridge Samaritans are located at 8 Mildmay Road, Ilford, IG1 1DT. Call 020 8553 9900 or 08457 90 90 90
