CO N S C I O U S PAC K I N G When it comes to packing, BOHO & HOBO’s co-founder Yara Chard gets a rush from being as eco-friendly as possible. From her business trips and beach missions with her kids to her adventure travels, she always packs her bags with sustainability in mind. So What’s In Her Bags? For Business

For Adventure

Running her business involves travel by train, plane, and automobile. Before setting out, Yara goes to her kitchen pantry to grab a zipper bag set. These bags have water-resistant, food-grade liners, making them an excellent option for packing travel snacks, protecting jewelry in her overnight luggage bag, and packing her makeup and toiletries with confidence knowing that they won’t leak into her luggage during transit. Her bamboo cutlery set and stainless steel straw are always a staple in her purse for those meals-on-the-go. She believes in minimizing waste while on the road as much as possible.

When not working or on mom duty, Yara likes to explore the great outdoors by foot and kayak. To minimize the number of items and weight in her backpack, she uses her organic cotton produce bags to keep her gear tightly packed and accessible. In the small bag, all things edible can be found, such as a bento box filled with healthy snacks, a sandwich wrapped in beeswax food wrap, and a cloth napkin. The larger bag holds her rolled up, extra set of dry clothing, a towel, rain gear, and her silicone beach bag carrying all the essentials for day tripping. You will also find her glass infusion bottle slipped into the side compartment of her day pack for easy access.

For The Beach When packing for a day at the beach with her kids, Yara knows that sand, water, and dirt are inevitable, so she packs accordingly with reusable dishwasher safe bags that will stand up to all the elements. Using her silicone bags—that double as freezer storage bags while at home—she packs sunscreen, bug repellent, a mini first-aid kit, reusable organic cotton wet wipes, and hand sanitizer to create the ultimate waterproof beach bag. Oils, liquids, humidity, and condensation won’t be a problem when tossing these bags in with the beach towels, dry clothes, or blankets.

When packing for any excursion, Yara believes in using and repurposing what is already available at home, instead of buying or storing unnecessary travel bags and equipment. Her philosophy is “a little preparedness goes a long way, and it’s my responsibility to reduce my carbon footprint every day no matter where I’m going and how I’m getting there.”

Agents for change, BOHO & HOBO sells high-quality, sustainable living and zero waste products online and wholesale to retailers and zero waste stores. Shop their selection at bohoandhobo.ca. 11

FA L L RESET & REBALANCE

IMAGE: © JAKOB OWENS

For 5000 years, Yogis have dedicated themselves to the study of the Science of Life. Yoga's sister philosophy of well-being, known as Ayurveda, has uncovered many subtle and distinct patterns in nature, as well as in our lives. And Autumn is a special and important phase for us on every level of our health of mind, body and spirit.

WANDER / FALL 19 / LIVE WELL

There are a number of fascinating features and patterns that are unique to the Fall season. A key finding is that Autumn's natural rhythm is dominated by Vata - restlessness and movement. The wisdom of Ayurveda shows us how these traits manifest as an abundance of the energies of Air and Ether elements in all aspects of our lives during this season. In looking at the cycles of nature, we see strong evidence, watching leaves dry up, the wind blowing them off their branches, floating in space, and scattering in all directions. The weather is so unpredictable as the temperature fluctuates and storms come through more frequently at this time of year. By observing the cycles of our yearly calendar, we can clearly see that Fall is a busy time for all of us in our business and family life. Witness farmers hard at work gathering the harvest, see our children and grandchildren begin a new school year, and we ourselves get back to work with the ambitious priorities and initiatives we’ve been dreaming up over a languid summer. When we learn more about our own personal Ayurvedic constitution or dosha, we begin to see what kind of role the Vata element plays in our body and mind. Those of us who identify with stronger Vata patterns might notice how the Fall season can be particularly difficult, as we see very strong evidence of unpredictability and restlessness. Ayurveda also shows us the gifts and challenges of the Vata energy through each season of our life, and our peri-menopause, wander-mag.com

menopause, and andropause time are associated with Vata energy. During this time of our lives, we are experiencing hormonal fluctuations, as well as changes in our domestic patterns, with children leaving home to begin their own lives, with divorce for some, and downsizing for many. And many of us are traveling more during the Fall timeframe, for business, and also for pleasure, to see the spectacular colors on show, and savor the flavors of this beautiful season. As wellness seekers and travelers, we should also be aware that traveling, by definition, is an activity that increases Vata energy in our lives. With that in mind, we can use our practice to do something about this natural phenomenon and bring ourselves back into harmony and balance with the other elements. We can navigate this time by harnessing the energy of the Autumn, to enjoy the excitement of new adventures, and lean on the wisdom of Fall’s rhythms and let nature takes its course through our lives. We look to the way trees gracefully release and surrender the leaves they've created and nurtured over time, acknowledging that the leaves are no longer needed at this stage, knowing this natural process of surrendering is truly healing and restoring. 14

EAT & DRINK FOR STABILITY

It improves our overall sense of wellbeing by circulating lymph and bringing fresh energy to every area of the face and body.

Create an effective strategy to consume 3 liters of water all day, every day. Have soothing herbal teas and room temperature water infused with lemon or cucumber on hand at all times.

Coconut oil pulling is another way to use oil to pacify Vata naturally while detoxing. It also has the powerful effect of quieting not just our physical voice, but the inner voices of the mind as well.

Plan nourishing, warm meals, and try to eat at the same time each day. Settle the mind by eating and drinking mindfully, and with awareness and gratitude.

GROUND DOWN

Modify your physical asana practice to support you through this time of instability and change.

OIL UP

Include earthy poses that connect you to the ground and enable you to cultivate awareness of gravity or Apana, downward flowing energy. Be sure to include restorative practices, so you feel calmer, rested and clear-minded every day.

Give yourself a daily Abhyanga treatment, a mindful and gentle ayurvedic self-massage with warm almond, sesame, or avocado oil. The energy of these heavy oils penetrate not just our skin, but the action of the self-massage slows our thoughts and has a soothing and calming effect on the nervous system.

Moving through the restlessness and uncertainty that Fall brings, challenges us to move inward, to find and develop our inner strength, resilience, and resources. Let the practical tools from Yoga and Ayurveda help you navigate and flow gracefully through all the changes Autumn has in store.

Constructive Rest Rocking

Child's Pose

Add these 3 grounding poses to your daily practice, especially when you travel, and spend extra time in them when you have a really challenging day.

Tranquillity Pose

WANDER / FALL 19 / LIVE WELL

A treatment or day at the spa is an investment in your health and wellbeing, so planning and choosing well is critical. We spoke to Luxury Wellness Spa Consultant Julia Linford (julialinfordspadesign.com), whose expertise in crafting beautiful and profitable natural spas has taken her around the globe. In 2002, Julia opened her own spa specializing in facials and created a natural product line called Jules Skincare. After selling the spa 12 years later, she began the journey of helping boutique hotel owners and retreat centers create incredible spa experiences where people can unwind and reconnect with themselves. Wander: In your opinion, what is the key thing to keep in mind when we are choosing a spa?

What about products? What should we be looking for or asking about?

JL: The number one thing I always look out for is, does the spa have a philosophy, and does their philosophy resonate with you. A spa experience should really be a transformational experience, and something you will never forget. For example, if holistic, natural, and organic products and living are essential to you, ensure their philosophy and treatments reflect these values.

JL: Natural and organic products are a must. And does the spa stand by the brand they represent? Most spas don't even list the products they use, and in my mind, this is a red flag. I want to know what are they going to put on my precious skin - the biggest organ of my body. Pure and natural ingredients give results and condition the skin with food, primarily plant essences and oils, whereas chemicals and synthetic ingredients are harmful and toxic. Again, this all has to connect back with the philosophy and passion of the spa.

I feel that a spa that has an independent owner is more likely to offer holistic services and create a more personal approach; there is a personal passion behind the philosophy. When in doubt, call the spa and speak to the manager ahead of time. This kind of personal interaction can ensure all the difference.

What does a transformational experience look like to you? JL: A quiet space and a holistic approach are going to send you on a journey where you can genuinely connect with yourself and your healing. In this busy world of 'go go go' this is what we humans need and benefit from the most. We must take care of ourselves first so we can perform well in all aspects of our lives.

Anything to watch out for, or be wary of? JL: Whether you're seeking skincare or massage, too much choice on a spa menu is overwhelming. When a spa specializes in specific treatments, often the overall experience will be better. Notice if they offer treatments all over one hour in length. Duration is an important factor that means they have created treatments that are going to deeply relax you. I always say to get the full benefit, choose spa treatments that are 1.5 hours or more.

Julia’s Checklist: Choosing the Right Spa • Philosophy • Spa menu • Treatment duration • Add-ons • Products • Approach

Also, add on value is important. Does the spa offer packages that are unique and offer pampering experiences during the treatment, like adding a scalp massage to a facial or a mini facial to a massage? Finally, if a spa says they are all about wellness and they are offering medical treatments like laser and botox, I feel it is a contradiction. I don't think medi-spas and wellness spas are the same things. 17

T R AV E L F O R G O O D As an association of hotels that are dedicated to developing inspiring and exceptional guest experiences with a strong sustainability element, we are often asked what defines a “sustainable trip.” The main challenge on this is really understanding, acknowledging and being at peace with the fact that your decisions have a limited area of influence on the

environmental (in a broader sense of cultural + social + ecologic) impact.

WANDER / FALL 19 / LIVE WELL

The good news is that there are a handful of simple actions you can take that can make a big change to the local community and ecology balance (and if that’s not traveling sustainability, I don’t know what it is). The beautiful thing about tourism and sustainability is that it is the ultimate “glocalization" industry. It may be the only economic activity that takes you personally to a different place or culture (and not the other way around). This is critical because it allows you, as the traveler, to take an active role to engage the location (compared to, say, coffee - most consumers will never meet the farmer). Bee + Hive approaches sustainability through 3 lenses; I will try to break down how this unique aspect of tourism reflects on each:

SOCIAL-ECONOMIC

Be sure to read beforehand about the local culture, prioritize independent hotels that are naturally integrated with the local community and know the “whos and wheres” of the place, and will be happy to bring new customers to the local village. Allow your presence to be part of the economic motor behind a local community, investigate and choose businesses that are part of the community.

CULTURAL

On top of this, be mindful of the WAY you approach the destination and its people. It’s never too much to ask - and often, local communities will be very happy to explain to you in detail how their customs came to be, how their great-grandmother taught them this recipe, or how a visit from a historic figure created a local holiday. This is the non-economic positive impact of sustainable tourism that is often underappreciated - there is a significant boost of PRIDE that local communities benefit from sharing their history, culture, and customs. This is usually taken from them via large resorts: the ability to have on a 1-to-1 exchange with a tourist, explain to them how their culture is amazing. Also, don’t assume everyone speaks your language and try your best to understand their non-verbal communication.

ECOLOGICAL

The most obvious and promoted (and yes - why I left for last) side of sustainability is in regard to the relationship with nature. Let’s address the elephant in the room: yes, there is a significant footprint from taking flights, but there is no real other option in most cases. Once in the destination, check for all opportunities for bike transfers instead of a taxi or renting a car - good for your wallet, for your health, but also the Environment (unfortunately, not all destinations are ready for this, structure-wise, and also safety-wise). Each location has its challenges, and if you chose correctly, locals will be the ones better equipped to give you the right and effective tips.

All this can be summarized in a couple of very straight forward recommendations: The Earth is for us all, but you are in someone else’s house. Be mindful, respectful, and thankful. Act as if you are visiting your mother. Choose your hotel (independent, integrated to the local community), and trust their knowledge and connections. Locals always know better. Beeplushive.com is the go-to platform to discover the best in sustainable travel experiences, uniting hotels, restaurants, and parks who share their belief in the transformational power of Tourism. 19

GLOW doesn’t promise perfect skin – no book can – but what it does commit to is helping you make the best of what you have in 4 weeks. Ultimately it’s the difference between a good complexion and an amazing one, not to forget, a healthier heart, energized gut and brain too that comes with it! Through the pages, Irish-born author Kate O’Brien empowers you to enjoy a lifelong love affair with eating well and looking great. As beauty guru Sali Hughes says in her book Pretty Honest: “The only thing worse than feeling like crap is looking like crap too.”

Own Your Skin: Kate’s Tips

Keep it simple - cull unnecessary steps and products because if you believe all the marketing talk, your days (and cash) could be spent on products you don't really need. This said, my three nonnegotiable are: cleanse, tone and moisturize, without exception.

wander-mag.com

Cleansing: There is absolutely no point in spending money on beautifully packaged serums and creams unless you are working from a clean slate. Aside from the fact that other products won't penetrate effectively if the skin is not clean, imperfectly cleaned skin is also a fertile breeding ground for bugs (think spots and more). Lack of time is no excuse either as an effective cleansing takes 2-3 minutes and will leave the skin clean, soothed an prepped for overnight repair. Work with your body’s natural rhythms: Research has shown that as our skin synchronizes with the body’s natural circadian rhythms, evening skin healing/repair can start as early as dusk, with the skin moving slowly into repair mode as the sun goes down. It makes sense then to remove the day’s grime and thoroughly cleanse the skin as early as possible in the evening to maximize skin repair through the night. Easy on the acids: Skin acids are omnipresent now in cleansers, toners, serums, masks and peels. Although they do help slough away dead skin cells lending added radiance to the face, they also strip the skin and in many cases destroy the delicate skin barrier. While peels have a place they are not for every day and not for every skin type as overuse leaves the skin thin and fragile. The older I grow, the gentler I am on my skin and in my life at large. I know harsh doesn’t work so I have reduced the amount of acid I 24

WANDER / FALL 19 / EAT WELL

Apply sunscreen daily: Sun is the single biggest cause of skin aging. So, regardless of the season and the weather, use broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) SPF 30 every day.

use, choosing gentle, more nourishing products that are kinder to my skin – and body. Don’t forget your neck: “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth,” the late great Nora Ephron said. Even if your face is glowing radiantly, a lined and sagging neck tells a lot. In my years of trialing skincare products I've concluded that most neck creams are not worth their hefty price tag. What's more, many are thick and show up as irritating red rings around the crease lines. Invest in a quality face oil, serum or cream with active anti-aging ingredients and apply on the neck in an upward motion towards the face using both hands.

Prioritize sleep: The term ‘beauty sleep’ isn’t thrown about for nothing with continued research proving how important adequate restful sleep is for our skin – and our health at large. Own your skin: Switch up your regime with the seasons or when you feel necessary (i.e. with hormonal changes). As the weather changes so does our skin, with heavier products needed during the cooler winter months.

GLOW RECIPIES

Minted Farro and Three-Bean Salad with Goat Cheese Serves 3-4

1 cup roasted farro 3 cups water large handful fresh mint leaves ¾ cup frozen edamame (or broad) beans, defrosted and shelled ¾ cup frozen petit pois, thawed 3 cups baby kale or baby spinach leaves ½ lime, juice only 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ½ avocado, peeled and sliced 5–6 cherry tomatoes, halved ⅓ cup goat cheese, cubed 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds handful chopped walnuts sea salt and black pepper handful fresh coriander, chopped (optional) wander-mag.com

Rinse the farro and place in a medium saucepan with the water, mint leaves and a pinch of salt. Cover and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for 20–25 minutes or until the grain is tender. Drain and place in a large bowl, discarding the mint leaves. Meanwhile, put the edamame and peas in a small pot of boiling water and cook for 2–3 minutes. Drain and plunge into cold water (to retain color and maximize nutrient content). Mix with farro. Add baby kale or spinach leaves. Drizzle lime juice and olive oil over salad and toss to combine. Add the avocado, tomatoes and goat cheese, and sprinkle the pomegranate seeds, chopped walnuts and coriander, if using, on top. WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

As the mom of two daughters, it's important for me to explore new destinations because it's a chance to show my girls they can go anywhere, no travel companion required. From Facetiming at the Eiffel Tower to running along the Mediterranean Sea to hiking the Rockies, I have made a point of leading by example. When you're on your own, there's only one person you need to satisfy, and that's you. Traveling alone is something everyone should do, especially women. There is something about the freedom of exploring a new destination on your own that's not only liberating, but it's also downright energizing.

There is something almost magical exploring during the predawn hours, as residents slowly awaken, and the destination comes to life. Similarly, there's a magical sense of adventure to traveling on your own. Whether you're discovering historical spots, sampling the local cuisine, or tackling a destination race, the feeling of being on your own is nothing short of pure freedom.

Ask any parent about the adventure of navigating decisions and making compromises for others, and the chance to plan a trip alone seems like a joyful occasion for celebrating. This solo adventure was going to be a marathon—or in my case a half marathon.

It's a similar vibe on the racecourse, where there are moments when you feel lifted from the earth. As my feet were bouncing off the roads in Tahiti, there were times when I truly felt at one with the tropical landscape and many moments of peace. Despite the sweat pouring down my face, at just the right moment, a light ocean breeze offered just enough reprieve to keep me going strong.

As a writer, this desire to explore has been a central part of who I am. So when my work life and passion for discovering new destinations collide, as it did the past spring for the Tahiti-Moorea Marathon, I knew I had to be there.

Despite having raced the 21.1 kilometers distance a few weeks before, this was an entirely different race. The Moorea Marathon is about celebrating the island culture and lifestyle. While it is a competitive event, the organizer intends to give runners an authentic experience of French Polynesia from start to finish.

I'm accustomed to taking the road less traveled and charting a path on my own. Even when I'm not racing, running always has me exploring new areas. Navigating a city on an early morning run has become my initial introduction to towns and beaches worldwide. 31

The race route wanders along the ocean with the golden burst of the sunrise coming into view within the first few kilometers. Along the way, traditional tribal music is played by local musicians amid the cheering crowds. By the end of the race, the lush, vibrant green mountain views and the tranquil turquoise ocean gave me clarity.

runner with a little extra energy and an even greater desire to connect with one another.

The post-race party—complete with traditional Polynesian barbequed meats—offered a taste of the sweet and savory blend that is central to this island.

Tahiti's beauty is incomparable. The island's vibe is second to none. From the moment the plane touched down on the tarmac, and I breathed in the scented air, I knew I was somewhere special.

There was no preparing for the rapidly soaring temperatures, even at the early morning start of the Moorea Marathon. This was not the race for a personal best or even to use as a training run. This was an eye-opening race, one for your senses in every possible way, and one where connecting with other runners would get you through to the finish line.

There is an energetic level of excitement in Tahiti, mixed with a warm and relaxed island vibe that keeps everything in balance. Thousands of travelers visit the Tahitian islands each year. Some are looking for adventure, others are looking to recharge, and everyone finds that Tahiti is precisely where they need to be.

Runners, in general, are a friendly bunch with plenty of camaraderie at the start line and throughout the race. On race day, it felt as though Moorea's relaxed atmosphere infused every wander-mag.com

I was grateful for the cheering during those last few kilometers as well, where it can be tough for runners like me who don't reside in tropical climates.

The island of Moorea is a 30-minute boat ride from Tahiti. Local islanders commute daily between the two islands, which have distinct atmospheres—Moorea's is a laidback one, while the intensity of urban energy is palpable in Tahiti. 32

On Moorea, nature is your playground. Biking the coastline and up through soaring mountain trails, around every bend each view is more breathtaking than the last. The combination of the ocean tides, rugged mountains, and lush tropical forests is both calming and energizing. On an e-bike tour, I ask my guide if he feels the same, and he agrees. One of the reasons many recent graduates flock to Tahiti is for the chance to recharge before real life takes over. On my last day in the Tahitian islands, I breathe in the salty air and think about where I've traveled and how different the experience is for me on this trip. I've always enjoyed road trips with friends for the opportunity to reconnect with one another. And there's no doubt the enjoyment I get from planning my next vacation with my daughters. But having the chance to explore a new destination with your eyes wide open leaves you with a different feeling, one that both magical and revitalizing all on its own.

A Traditional Ayahuasca Healing Retreat in Costa Rica

WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

S AC R E D AWA K E N I N G S I was 24 years old, feeling more lost than ever, questioning the meaning of life at every turn and yearning for a purpose.

“Nervous, excited, anxious and every other emotion I have ever felt before,” I told the facilitator, Scott, who was asking about my feelings for my first ceremony. He whispered back, “Let go of all expectations, let the medicine do its work, and enjoy the process.” I nodded, still feeling quite nervous, but prepared. The room was silent, and two candles were the only things separating us from complete darkness. I sat cross-legged in the center of the ceremonial hut, face to face with the healer Silvia. I could feel the warmth and compassion in her smile as she blessed the glass of liquid and leaned closer to hand it to me. As I took the cup, I set my intentions for the night, asked the Mother to be gentle, released all expectations, and drank.

41

wander-mag.com

WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

The liquid had the consistency of motor oil and tasted (as I can only imagine) just as foul. I thanked Maestra Silvia, stood up, and walked back to my mattress that lay at the edge of the room. The only prep left to do was to get comfortable, focus on my breath, and express gratitude for the opportunity. The rest was out of my hands. What came next would be determined by the mystical and infinite power of the plant medicine I traveled so far to experience, ayahuasca. Now, what the heck is ayahuasca, how do you pronounce it, and why would anyone choose to drink something that tastes like a diesel truck smoothie? Without getting incredibly technical, ayahuasca (I-Uh-Was-Kah) is an Amazonian plant medicine tea made from two or more plants – typically the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the chacruna leaf (Psychotria Viridis) – containing the psychoactive chemical dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Indigenous healers in South America have drunk the plant medicine for centuries as a means of spiritual healing, treatment of illness, communication, and much more. More recently, there has been a surge in popularity among Westerners seeking wander-mag.com

ayahuasca as an alternative to Western medicine, using it for psychological healing, personal growth, and expansion of consciousness. This type of work intrigued me. I was 24 years old, feeling more lost than ever, questioning the meaning of life at every turn and yearning for a purpose. I wanted to be more connected with family and less concerned with materialistic possessions or social media. But most of all, I wanted to be happy with who I was. Never having partaken in an ayahuasca ceremony before, I desired a space that emphasized the safety of its participants and honored the use of it through indigenous Amazonian healers and their way of working with the medicine. It was that burning desire for change that ultimately led me across the world to Soltara Healing Center in Costa Rica. I was one of thirteen individuals who had embarked on this adventure of extreme proportions at Soltara Healing Center, an all-inclusive ayahuasca retreat center in the jungles of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula. Soltara offered a safe and loving environment to experience plant medicine in the traditions of the indigenous Shipibo people of Peru. 42

WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

Sitting atop a seaside cliff overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya, the retreat center is surrounded by a luscious rainforest where the sounds of diverse wildlife synchronized to form a natural symphony. The meals were sourced locally, tasting as fresh and delicious as nature intended. The staff was as loving a people I have ever come into contact with and the healer’s songs, also known as icaros, will forever hold a place in my heart. In combination with modalities such as massage, yoga, and breathwork, Soltara created the optimal environment in which to proceed with confidence in the consumption of ayahuasca.

Family, friends, nature, and love replaced money, titles, validation, and superficial interactions at the forefront of my life’s desires. The medicine let me see clear that spending time building meaningful relationships and being receptive to a wide range of new experiences is where my values should lie in order to truly live a fulfilling life. Drinking ayahuasca was a rollercoaster with some unbelievable highs and insidious lows. Facilitator Scott’s advice I now see transcends the ayahuasca experience to life itself: enjoy the process.

My four ceremonies were a combination of the most painful yet enlightening moments of my life. Physically the medicine induced an array of effects ranging from weightlessness and euphoria to a heavy flu-like nausea. These feelings pushed my mind into moments of conflict; bringing every negative thought I had about myself to the surface and forcing me to reframe them. Ayahuasca brought to life every spec along the emotional spectrum with intense magnification. I was able to feel wretched depression, immeasurable love, and everything in between with full force.

Matthew Joseph seeks to inspire that desire for new experiences in his readers. Whether it’s through travel, music, conversation, or a thought-provoking book, Matthew plans on enjoying everything that life has to offer.

My eyes were filled with arrangements of gorgeous geometric patterns and colorful tapestries. Visions of my past were put on display like a projector screen, and religious deities greeted me with arms wide open. The impact the medicine had on my spiritually, however, was the most transformative. I was able to comprehend concepts and feel emotions that were previously unfamiliar. Gratitude for life and the opportunity to experience all that it has to offer became as clear to me as the ground I walk on. 43

HOW AN AY U R V E D I C S PA H O L I D AY HELPED ME FIND INNER PEACE & BALANCE

BY ALICE ALECH

When I was offered the chance to "get my life back on track" I grasped it with both hands.

WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

INNER PEACE & BALANCE The words “you need a holiday on your own" hurt like hell. At first, I thought I hadn't heard right. My loving husband of twenty years had noticed the change in me - no energy, no confidence, no fun to be with. I was aging fast.

What to Do? I could choose to ignore my inner self or search for a positive path to reverse the situation. Seeking to find that mental and physical harmony once again and, more importantly, to save our marriage, I decided a sixday stay at the Jasmin Ayurvedic Spa on the remote tropical island Sri Lanka could be the solution. Medical Consultation My Ayurvedic experience began in a calm, incense-scented room immediately upon arrival - a consultation involving direct, in-depth and searching questions about my lifestyle and medical history, all designed to help the ayurvedic specialist detect what was troubling me. A physical examination followed. Dr. Janith Chathurika examined my tongue, checked my pulse, and weighed me, all part of the assessment process to help her determine my dominant doshas. Doshas in Ayurveda refer to the body's internal energies, vital in Ayurvedic medicine. With this knowledge, the practitioner can prescribe the right treatments and set up an individual eating plan. Dr. Chathurika explained that according to this ancient Indian holistic medicine practice doshas guide the physical and mental processes in the body and mind. Derived from the five elements - space, air, fire, water, and earth - the three doshas in Ayurveda are Vata, Kapha, and Pitta, and all of us humans come with our own individual doshas. We need to keep those doshas healthy because when our dosha energies are out of balance, we become ill. According to my Ayurvedic practitioner, I was feeling sluggish because of the imbalance of my dosha energies. In other words, my Kapha and Pitta energies were out of alignment. I so wanted those energies back in balance; I wanted them restored in a natural, holistic way. I was ready to commit to the planned diet and all the therapies she suggested. It felt like the right choice. 49

I was pleased I chose Sri Lanka for this healing program. India is understandably the first choice when deciding where to go for Ayurvedic medicine; it makes sense, this is where the mind-body experience first started. But there’s something quite exotic about being on a remote island.

and pineal glands. Developed in India, Ayurveda doctors use Shirodhara for a variety of conditions such as eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, graying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis.

Herbal Teas and Vegetarian Food Drinking herbal teas for breakfast instead of strong coffee was a bit challenging at first, but it came with delicious Indian pancakes and local fruit. I became a convert to these caffeine-free Ayurvedic teas and enjoyed them during meals, between meals and throughout the day. Meals were simple and purely vegetarian with unusual but satisfying combinations.

Jasmine Flower Bath Sitting in a warm bathtub filled with jasmine flowers on my last day, I allowed my thoughts to drift. I loved the pampering and nurturing, I loved the vegetarian lifestyle that made me feel so much lighter, I loved the gentle pace of this spa resort.

Daily Massages Massages are relaxing at the best of times, but the heated oil and herb combination was simply magnificent. I melted, tingling from top to toe in pure ecstasy. What I found surprising was the remarkable strength of this tiny therapist as she squeezed and stroked my sore muscles and joints with her strong, skillful hands.

What I loved more than anything though was my new knowledge: understanding the importance of healthy living, eating the right food for my body and more importantly how vital it is to have that mind/body balance. My improved sleep pattern showed that I was beginning to absorb the lessons.

The Shirodhara Oil Massage Even more exotic is the Shirodhara oil massage. Let me explain. I lay on my back with a stream of warm herbal oil dripping gently unto my forehead then trickling down my ears and the sides of my face. Shirodhara is a healing treatment, the most relaxing, soothing experience I have ever experienced. I didn’t have to do anything, just lie there and be transported to a heavenly state while the hot oil poured over me.

I was pleased I chose Sri Lanka for this healing program. India is understandably the first choice when deciding where to go for Ayurvedic medicine; it makes sense, this is where the mind-body experience first started. But there’s something quite exotic about being on a remote island. My only regret was that I had only six days at the spa. I returned to my life and love re-enervated, reenergized, and with a new and positive mindset.

My therapist Priya explained that this head flow treatment stimulates secretions from the endocrine system – the pituitary

Possibly younger? Well, in my mind, yes. And I remain enchanted and motivated by the whole experience.

B R E AT H I N G N E W L I F E I N TO R E T R E AT S The Power Of Yoga, Travel & Adventure For Recovery

BY CARRIE HOFFMAN wander-mag.com

They told me not to travel. When I got sober, my recovery community was full of warnings and admonitions about traveling overseas, living in a foreign country, or stepping “outside the herd” in any way. The hinted-at idea was that doing these things would inevitably lead me to relapse. It didn't. Traveling the world and living in two Asian countries since getting sober has instead been phenomenal. Getting sober was the first step in becoming my best self, but if I had stayed in one place I think the evolution would have stopped there. I had always dreamed of traveling and living in different countries. Fulfilling this dream wasn’t running away; it was coming back to myself. The personal growth I’ve had putting myself in unfamiliar territory and being willing to face new challenges has been immense.

travel with the rest of our recovery community. I had recently fulfilled a longtime dream of doing my yoga teacher training in Sri Lanka, so the stars aligned perfectly to start our social enterprise business. During my training, I learned about the Indian science of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian "Science of Life" which was developed alongside Yoga centuries ago. It's all about finding optimal health and balance in body, mind, and spirit. While there's much to study, a basic understanding of the underlying principles of Ayurveda can greatly enhance our daily lives.

Traveling sober can be intimidating. Many of us in recovery used vacation as a chance to go off the rails into our addictions. And being away from your recovery support system can cause anxiety. We get it. That’s why my husband Zach (who’s also sober) and I founded Bigger Life Adventures. After a transformative year working as digital nomads while traveling through Asia, we realized that we needed to share our passion for healthy, spiritual

“With the demand of more female travelers wanting to 'go it alone,' more suppliers are leaning towards better pricing for solo travel. For instance, G Adventures will try and match up like-minded people together. If you still do not wish to share, then there is a supplement; however, it may not be as high. The rate will depend on the destination and length of stay. AMA Waterways has a wellness program and select cabins set aside for the solo traveler. Just You is based totally on the solo traveler and does not charge a single supplement. You can be alone and still meet people from all over the world and come back home with a new friend list! It all boils down to what you really want to experience and how much is that worth to you and if it means going alone, then go for it! It’s safer than you think. Be sure to source out a trusted and reliable Travel Expert who specializes in Well Being Adventures and knows which suppliers to contact to create an itinerary that will suit your needs.”

P. 'Buffy' Robblee Independent Professional Travel Consultant, The Travel Agent Next Door

“More and more women are traveling solo, and just because you are on your own, it should not mean you have to compromise. While many standard hotels and tour operators impose a single supplement, you can certainly discover properties that put extra value in their single traveler clientele, this is especially true in the wellness travel sector. With the central theme of self-improvement and personal lifestyle transformation, wellness-focused experiences are often best enjoyed solo, which is why many retreats provide options to best suit single traveler needs. It’s always a good idea to complete a consult to determine the right retreat for you in-line with your specific goals and preferences however three options that I can recommend for you right now include: Aro Ha Wellness Retreat in New Zealand (with their Eco Single rooms custom-built for solo guests), BodyHoliday in St Lucia (with no single supplement in their Garden Rooms and a whole month dedicated to solo travelers each September), and Freycinet Experience Walk in Australia, where single guests can enjoy a private room at no additional cost. These venues all welcome both solo male and solo female guests and ensure guest safety and comfort as a priority. These retreats offer an opportunity for you to have your own privacy when you need it and socialize or meet like-minded individuals through group activities and excursions. Your trusted travel advisor can also look out for special deals, discounts or single supplement waivers as well as provide further insight into the retreats and their usual clientele to make sure your retreat is as solo-friendly as possible so lean on them for further guidance.”

“It can be a daunting task to trust and work with someone new, especially for such a special trip. As a Travel Advisor, I get to know you, ask questions about your likes and dislikes, past destinations, and what you want to take away from your travels. The destination is important but what you want to experience is key.

“Most retreat venue accommodations have the capacity for 2 people, thus they base their pricing on people sharing a room, and the single supplement charge is used to cover the lost income from the second person. Other retreat venues have accommodation configurations where individuals may have their own guestroom but share common areas and washrooms.

Think beaches, mountains, lush vegetation and winding roads along the Caribbean Sea … what better way to venture into a solo winter holiday than at BodyHoliday in St Lucia? The hotel offers a dedicated Standard Garden room for solo travelers and the best part is, there is no single supplement. Experience their four pillars of relaxation, restoration, exercise, and good diet. You will feel comfortable joining in on an array of their included daily activities, like meditation, yoga, hiking, and biking, and can indulge in daily, complimentary 50-minute spa sessions.

In managing retreats, we have personally experienced and have had feedback from participants that sharing a room with someone new is an excellent experience. Since most retreats involve some sort of personal development, having someone to talk to at the end of each day is valuable and helps with the integration process. Many people establish lifelong friendships and stay connected long after the retreat. Retreat Leaders will take great care in finding you a suitable roommate if you are open to sharing. It is always good to step out of your comfort zone – give it a try! If that is absolutely not possible, the single supplement is your option.”

Enjoy the moments of solitude and self-reflection that solo travel can bring, but don’t forget to enjoy the new friends you make along the way….believe me when I say the BodyHoliday will check all your boxes.”

"Hello, my fellow solo Wanderluster. I love to inspire, guide and connect other solo women travelers to wellness destinations and retreats around the globe! I have personally traveled solo to many destinations, including Canada, the U.S., Europe, Mexico and Costa Rica, the latter being one of my top recommendations. I have personally explored Costa Rica solo and have assisted hundreds of travelers around the country as well. You will find lots of Americans and Canadian snowbirds and expats residing in Costa Rica. I find Costa Rica to be very safe and easy to navigate with just a little guidance. The Costa Ricans are so friendly, and visitors quickly adapt to the "Pura Vida" lifestyle which embraces a simple yet fulfilling approach. Each resort or retreat space is unique and has many offerings perfect for solo travelers, depending upon what you would like to gain and achieve from your getaway.

There are plenty of destinations that cater to solo travelers looking to have their own private accommodation experience and not paying an extra supplement. SQ: Waking up next to my husband to the sunlight pouring in a cracked window and gentle breeze grazing a curtain. We have a fresh pot of Columbian Coffee ready in a nearby room, and the aroma exudes right in our direction. As we open the door to the outside, the turquoise waters and ocean breeze awaken our senses while the warmth of the morning’s sun kisses our skin. Meditation, coffee, yoga, a beach stroll and a few hours spent creating in some form of writing, photography, filming or painting would top off a perfect Sunday morning.

One that tops the cake: I was invited on a press trip to cover a luxury private island resort in Fiji. Given an extended invite, my husband came along as well. I had never been to a destination so remote before in my life, hopping three planes, a seaplane, and a full 48 hours later, landing in our final destination of Turtle Island. Everything on the island was sustainably sourced, from the food to the electricity to the vibrant energy the staff and local community hosted. The people of the island had little to nothing (compared to American standards), yet, were some of the happiest and most caring individuals I had ever met.

The afternoons would be spent with friends or family over a collectively prepared meal, featuring plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and Italian coffee. Beach volleyball, handstands or playing in the ocean waves to follow.

Now, what made this trip interesting (to add to the beauty), was the trip back home. After missing our first flight out of Fiji International Airport, getting lost en route to a hotel to stay over, dozing off in the lobby of a resort on the mainland of Fiji while waiting for an email confirmation, to later find out there was no reservation ever made. Back in the van, to the airport, my husband and I slept in and out for the next four hours while waiting for the layover for our next flight.

In the evening, enjoying a post-dinner walk with my husband on the beach watching the sunset, talking and sharing what the week’s adventures and life goals lie ahead. Tea, shared jokes and laughs until we both have tears streaming from our cheeks, as I fall asleep in his arms reading or watching a movie. By the way, is it Sunday yet?

WANDER / FALL 19 / TRAVEL WELL

Rescheduled, we took off to land in SFO. There, we had another delay in our flight, missing the previous one due to the delay that was originally scheduled for us. A quick google search and we realized it was cheaper and more efficient to purchase an Admirals membership for the year then haul to a nearby hotel and pay to use the facilities. A member of the “club” I became. I kept in mind the entire time the community and staff of the island in Fiji, that how much you have, or how perfect your flights go, has nothing to do with your happiness level. YOU have control of how happy you are, and the perceptive you possess. After one of the best showers and refuels later, we were on our next flight out of SFO and heading home to our final destination in MIA. While there was nothing extraordinary about our mix up in times, delays and mishaps, this was one of those “transformational travel” stories that reiterated life flows when we can be resourceful and go with the flow, taking in life’s lessons as they present themselves. Travel is one of the best teachers for such lessons.

We’re having a potluck dinner. What do you bring? Papayas from Costa Rica. Avocados and nopales from Mexico. Mangoes from Jamaica. Dates from the Middle East. Crisp apples from New England. Ripe raspberries from Spain. Fresh fish from Portugal. Vine-ripened tomatoes from Italy. Anything and everything fresh from their native lands.

Go-to comfort at the end of the day? A warm hug and sweet kiss from my husband. Before bed, a cup of tea and some Amazon Prime or whatever book grabs me at the moment.

Best wellness or travel tip? #ownyourweird — don’t be afraid to be the weirdo stretching on a plane, at the gate, or when you land. It’s OK to bring your own food and say “No thanks” to the cookies or aluminum-wrapped meal in-flight. And, never feel uneasy about passing on your coworkers’ after-work drinks to workout instead.

What excites you about your company/influence? Wellness and Travel are two of the largest growing markets out there at the moment. Each day, well-being activities that were once saved for “vacation” or only found in select regions of the world are now being incorporated and accepted as lifestyle habits. Just think. not too long ago, not many had yoga mats in their homes in the United States, we had never heard of Spirulina and detox meant you were drinking diet soda. So much has shifted and changed, and we have access to more information on the Internet than ever before. As a content creator, travel wellness agent, on-camera talent and motivational speaker in the wellness travel category, it excites me to be a leader in sharing and educating others in an on-demand market. There are content creators in wellness, and then there’s those in travel — I haven’t seen many taking on the category to overlap the two, both of which are my expertise.

What do you want your legacy to be? To inspire as many individuals as possible to understand that: You have the power to choose any life you desire to live. You may be dealt with a poor hand, but where you are today doesn’t have to determine your destiny. Living free is that power of choice, and the inner warrior is the inner fighter, and lover, to guide you there.

Right now, I’m flying from Miami to New York City with carry-on only. In my backpack (way better for your spine than a singlestrap bag, by the way), I have a camera and filming equipment, my laptop, hand cream and lip balm, noise-canceling headphones, a few nutrition bars, and a portable charger.

Purchase Living Cancer Free: A Warrior’s Fall and Rise Through Food, Addiction + Cancer at saraquiriconi.com/book.

My rolling carry-on has packing cubes of clothes, travel-sized toiletries, a reusable cup, sleep buds and eye mask, one pair of alternative shoes and a bathing suit. Mainly, it has snacks, fruits, nuts, protein powder, and dates. I pack snacks wherever I go, and will never be left at the mercy of an airport to feed me.

The amount of content available online today is astounding. In this cluttered landscape, our approach is pretty simple. Instead of yelling louder, tell a different story. Stories that resonate, that evoke emotion, that drive action. We specialize in creating these stories, and distributing them to the right people, at the right time.
